LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Lopstock III) & Darsombra Concert Videos!!

Two topic post on this final day of June, including new videos from a unique outdoor concert from earlier this month, but let's lead off with a big LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next month!

After an eight year hiatus, Lopstock is back for a third installment at LopLops Lounge on Saturday, July 29th! As you may recall, Lopstock was a Woodstock-inspired "bohemian conclave" that took place in June 2014 & 2015 thanks to then-Gnaeus drummer Brendan Garlick in cooperation with Ears & Eyes (at least in year #1). A third installment in 2016 didn't take place in part due to Brendan moving out of town for a spell, but aiming to help LopLops post-pandemic return to prominence led to him suggesting the return of Lopstock in 2023, which will also serve as the launch event for his new promotion agency Sault Noir. You can read more about Lopstock's rebirth and how the original events came together at this SooToday article by Chris Belsito, and Brendan offers some interesting insights as to the original Lopstock plans in 2014! One note is that Lopstock bands are asked to play all-original sets aside from (if desired) one cover song.

Ten bands are scheduled in the eight hour timeframe for Lopstock III, and while none are returnees from the mid-2010s, there are some returning artists in different bands. The advertised headliners are online page-less indie rock trio Pointless (led by Treble Charger's Bill Priddle), with local alt-hard rock quintet Handsome Sandwich co-headlining in what may be their post-relaunch debut at LopLops. Fellow Rotaryfest Stage 2 band The Hollow Heads will also play at Lopstock 3 with their indie rock originals, while rappers Ethan Stoneburgh & Sawbé will rock the mic in a joint set next month, and Christian rapper Bold Noize will also add to the hip-hop credentials with a set of his own. As far as bands go, you can also see rising young metal trio The BAG, new-ish local hard rock quartet Far From Fine (in their second show of the year), and pop rock quartet Jupiter Marvelous.

Talented young folk/pop rock solo musicians Hannah Lindsay and Juliana Regan (no word on if Blair St. John will join her again) are the advertised openers. This 19+ event has a 5:00 PM start time on July 29th, and tickets run for $25 (plus processing fees) at this link, though no word on in-person availability or a price hike at the door. Brendan will serve as MC, and Crank Sound Distribution will be on hand. This should be a great time for fans of current original music, including via three hard rock-leaning acts, and I hope this does well for Brendan, LopLops, and Sault Noir, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details!

We'll close today with some recent concert videos from Christopher Paci's excellent YouTube channel, and while he did film at the Josey Scott's Saliva concert, those will get their own upcoming post given the amount of bands on that bill. Instead, let's head back to the Darsombra-headlined outdoor show on June 21st on what promoters Dryer Fire called the "March Street Stage", so where exactly was that? My assumption that it was at the corner of March and Queen Street East was almost accurate, as the naming was kind of a misnomer. The stage was built in the open patio area beside June & Friends Hair Salon at 485 Queen Street East, so it was close to but not actually held on March Street. Musicians faced the patio seating and the OLG building in the distance, with their backs to Queen Street proper. Chris filmed three videos of the headlining Baltimore, Maryland psychedelic hard rock duo, so what can you see here?

Firstly, I'll have no luck titling the songs on offer given Darsombra's progressive jam approach and theatricality coming ahead of playing the songs as heard on studio albums, but click here and here to see the shorter videos (the longest one, embedded below, runs for over 15 minutes). Their set features a projector screen full of creative visuals, what appears to be a fly mask, and lots of impressive (if drone-friendly) trippy jam rock that won't be for everyone, but you have to admire what Darsombra are doing here, and with zest and energy! Hopefully the turnout was decent, but give things a look for yourself above & below, and stay tuned for more from him!

Lastly, Chris got one video of local folk punk/extreme metal solo musician Chase Wigmore's opening set, and between the daylight, lack of a projector screen backdrop, and Chris' sharper angle of the stage here, you get a better sense of how things were laid out for this unique outdoor concert. Looks like a decent setup that could hopefully be replicated for other shows! In a surprise, Chase actually covered Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" in this video, but he adds his own intense touches and rapid fire guitar flourish along with his distinct vocals, so fans of his folk punk side won't be left out in the lurch! Give Chase's video a watch below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for a new news post of some kind tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

Canada Day Weekend Hard Rock Concert Previews!!

With the Canada Day long weekend upon us (not to mention Engineers Day in Sault Michigan tomorrow), this weekend's non-Poutine Feast hard rock concert calendar isn't as packed as you may expect, partially due to Canada Day proper being on Saturday and not all nightclubs opening that day as a result. There are shows on both sides of the border to take note of, all getting some advance notice too, so let's lead off today in Sault Ontario!

First up for this weekend is local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck's special Moose Lodge concert TOMORROW NIGHT as part of singer/guitarist Terry Eaton's inductee celebration into the Great Northern Opry! As is traditional in the lead-up to the induction ceremony in November, the Northern Ontario Country Music Association puts on special concerts in the preceding months to spotlight the forthcoming Opry members in their hometowns, and Terry (a veteran country musician in addition to his rock work) will be feted as such tomorrow with Soundcheck backing him up! Expect this show to skew heavily towards country as a result, but long-time fans of theirs know not to be surprised when they break out a country cover. This special event has a 19+ age limit, 6:00 PM start time, and $20 advance tickets that can be bought by calling the phone number on the event poster or presumably at the door.

While not (yet) a Hall of Fame induction, being put in the Great Northern Opry is a huge deal for Northern Ontario country musicians, so congratulations to Terry for being honoured this year, and hopefully a solid crowd heads east to The Moose Lodge to enjoy him and Soundcheck tomorrow! Visit the above links for more details, don't miss his Soundcheck bandmate Cameron Oliver's acoustic country gig at Reggie's on Sunday afternoon, and here's the full band live!

Next up, let's head from east to west, as local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard will rock Jay's Piston Broke Pub with traditional concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! As they are doing for all of their Jay's weekends this summer, they are replacing Soundcheck as the Thursday jam night hosts too, but remember that we don't cover jam nights as "concerts" due to their unpredictability by design. The long weekend is a busy one for Greg, Alex, and Warren, with these shows also joined by their Poutine Feast headlining set on Saturday outside of the Old Stone House before they pack their gear and head back to the former Rosie for their Canada Day bash. Perhaps a little far to see fireworks, but if you want a heavy capper to the holiday itself, your best bet is Bone Yard at Jay's! All of this weekend's Jay's shows (tonight's jam night at 8:00 PM included) are 19+ affairs with no cover charges, and the two normal shows begin at 9:30 PM as usual.

Counting jam night, Bone Yard are playing live four times in three days this weekend, so if you are at all a fan of their southern fried classic and hard rock covers, you have plenty of chances to see them ahead! Visit the above links for more details on their "Triple Threat Canada Day Weekend Bash", and here's Bone Yard live at Jay's earlier this year!

Now let's hes south to Sault Michigan, where local hard rock quartet Rhythm & Brews will return to the stage for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rapids Lounge at the local Kewadin Casino branch! Last seen at The Merch in April (a show that they never publicized on their Facebook page), these will be their first shows at The Rapids Lounge this year (again, unless I missed something that they didn't announce beyond personal Facebook accounts). Note that in the post plugging this weekend's shows, they seem to have confirmed a lineup change/reversion, as original bassist Chris Leask is pictured in their Photoshopped (as always) band picture rather than Brett Blackwood. Chris had left Rhythm & Brews shortly before their live debut in July 2021 due to medical issues that would impair his bass playing, and it is good to see him back on stage again almost two years later!

If Brett has indeed left the band, then a reason for his exit wasn't announced, but hopefully nothing bad happened, and don't miss him with classic rock cover band Fake Chow! This union of two members each of Nixxon Dixxon & Highway 63 will rock out at The Rapids Lounge tomorrow and Saturday night at 9:00 PM with 21+ age limits and no cover charges. Visit the above links for more details, and no sign of public videos to preview them with yet! Hopefully even one turns up in time!

We'll close today's previews with local blues/hard rock quartet Project 906's return to Jack's Grub & Pub in nearby Brimley on SATURDAY NIGHT! While Saturday is not a holiday in the US, Jack's is promoting this as being part of the lead-up to their Fourth of July festivities on Tuesday, so keep that angle in mind! Saturday's show is a bit of a rain date for Project 906, who were scheduled to play there in February before an in-band illness called the show off. Five months and a new drummer later, hopefully this rescheduling proves to be a hit for 906 and attendees alike! You can enjoy Billy, Joe, Dustin, and Jason's blend of hard rocking covers on Saturday night at 8:00 PM with no cover charge and a 21+ age limit, and if you can't make it, they'll be in Eckerman next weekend. See above for more details on this show at 9915 West 6 Mile Road on Saturday, and here's Project 906 live!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Bone Yard) & Our Poutine Feast Concert Previews!!

The complete entertainment lineup for this weekend's Poutine Feast was finally unveiled via the Sault Ste. Marie Downtown Association's Facebook page courtesy of this "Reel" on Tuesday, and as a result, we have a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, as local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard will headline day #3 of the festival outside of the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the lineup was only announced on Tuesday, and Bone Yard didn't confirm their involvement until posting on their Facebook page about it yesterday. Perhaps they are truly a late addition, I don't know, but this comes within their previously announced Jay's Piston Broke Pub weekend gigs (previews forthcoming), so they'll be headlining downtown at 6:00 PM before heading west in time for their 9:30 PM gig there.

Hopefully this first of two Canada Day gigs goes well for Greg, Alex, and Warren on SATURDAY NIGHT! That day's other entertainment is not entirely musical, with dancers from the Northern Ontario Latin-Hispanic Association performing at 5:00 PM, not unlike what you may have seen at Multiculturalism Day yesterday. Acoustic cross-genre collective Gimiiwan & The Clouds (misspelled as "Gimmewan" in the lineup "Reel") appear to be the middle act at 3:00 PM, fresh off of their Summer Moon Festival set, while magician Ryan McFarling will wow the audience with tricks at 2:00 PM. Local folk solo musician Brian Tremblay (yes, the Face To Face concert video is coming!) will open on Saturday at 11:00 AM, which is also when the Canada Day program at the Poutine Feast begins. SATURDAY'S festivities are FREE & ALL AGES outside of the Old Stone House at 800 Bay Street until 9:00 PM.

Of course, the poutine and other food/drinks will cost (not to mention wares at the on-site vendor market), and with loads of food trucks that day and every day from Thursday-Sunday offering up many kinds of poutine for your delectation, this should be a fun way to spend your Canada Day! VIP tickets to skip the lines are available for $40 at this link if so desired. Be advised that 9&10 News is calling for a 40% chance of rain showers on SATURDAY with a high temperature of 19°. Visit the above links for more details, and here's Bone Yard live!

The other nights with hard rock bands were already announced by the bands in question, so they're not "new" to us, but the complete lineups are, so who else can you see at this year's Poutine Feast? We already knew that local funk/hard rock cover sextet The Wyld Stallyns would be headlining TOMORROW'S opening night of the festival at 6:00 PM, a nice promotion following being the Thursday curtain jerkers last year, so keep their fun and fan-friendly covers in mind! The middle act tomorrow will not be a band, rather the belly dancing troupe Jewels Of The Oasis, who take the stage at 5:00 PM. In a partial reprise of the Oktoberfest lineup last year, The Stallyns will be joined on tomorrow's bill by traditional German band Nein German Guys, who are the first scheduled entertainment act at 2:00 PM despite the Thursday program beginning at 11:00 PM. Again, attendance tomorrow is FREE & ALL AGES!

9&10 News is calling for mostly cloudy skies with a high of 21° and a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, so definitely keep that in mind. Clearly, the Poutine Feast organizers are easing into things this year (especially given that there are five entertainment acts on SATURDAY), but the Stallyns, the Jewels of the Oasis, and the German Guys should deliver their own distinct brands of entertainment to go along with your poutine tomorrow, and yes, The Wyld Stallyns should have a few heavier cuts! See above for more details, and here's The Wyld Stallyns live!

Friday's bill is the only one without a (known) hard rock band, and will feature new local disco tribute band The Saturday Nights (featuring Wyld Stallyns singer Christina Speers) as the 5:30 PM headliners alongside a mystery act named Aje (A.J.E.?) who I know absolutely nothing about. Their set is at 2:00 PM, implying that they're a musical act given the 3 hour block, but let us know if you can confirm who they are! Classic rock veterans Angry Joe & The Growlers will kick off day #2 at 11:00 PM, which has the same ground rules and timeframes as the day before and after. 9&10 News is calling for similar weather (50% chance of rain/storms), but with a higher peak temperature of 23° Celsius.

Finally for today's all-Poutine Feast preview post, we'll look at the closing day's program on SUNDAY, where the previously announced Handsome Sandwich will continue their upward momentum with a set full of alternative and hard rock originals from their "Deconstructed" album and beyond! I wonder which food truck makes the most handsome sandwich? The band's own promotion erroneously gave a 4:00 PM start time despite the Sunday program ending at 6:00 PM, and the schedule above confirms that they will take the stage at 2:30 PM. The all-musical openers on Sunday include a joint set from recent Northern Echoes openers Juliana Regan & Blair St. John at 1:00 PM and young local pop singer Tianna Legacy at 11:00 AM. Not heavier in style, but there's a lot of talent from both Juliana & Blair and Tianna, so don't bypass them! While things end sooner on Sunday, this is still FREE & ALL AGES (VIP passes aside).

9&10 News is calling for mostly cloudy conditions with the lowest chance of rain during the festival (20%), plus high temperatures of 21°. SMS diehards will likely only hear stuff on our radar during Handsome Sandwich's set, but everyone on Sunday has skills in their instruments and genres, so don't miss out on all of the closing day's musical entertainment! See above for more on all four days of this year's Poutine Feast, and here's Handsome Sandwich live in concert last summer!

That's all for now, but look for Canada Day weekend concert previews that don't involve poutine next! Thanks everyone!

YouTube Channel Profile Series: panzertera's Channel & Orb Hearthstone

It's now time for this month's YouTube Channel Profiles, where we again shine the spotlight on YouTube channels whose content is at least 50% devoted to local metal, hard rock, and/or punk artists and/or concerts, all randomly selected as usual! This month's installment is of two channels, as the first only had three audio uploads, so a second channel that I could source two distinct videos from was added to fill things out. Here's what you should know in this all E.U.P. installment, of which the same musician coincidentally factors in both channels!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

panzertera's Channel (http://youtube.com/panzertera)

Owner: A member of defunct Sault Michigan metal band Great Bodily Harm (exact identity unclear)

Channel Timeline: Launched on October 15th, 2009; Videos uploaded in March & April 2011

Channel Summary: This is the de facto official YouTube channel for the short-lived Great Bodily Harm, who you may remember seeing at a couple of local gigs in early-mid 2011 (including that year's Lemmafest). Their only extant online footprint of note is panzertera's channel, which features audio demos of their songs "You Don't Even Know", "Cuntrol" (sic), and their most popular track, "Jaw Breaker". G.B.H. featured vocalist Kirk Labadie (ex-Hammerspace), guitarist Doug Reed (ex-Half A Man), and future Power Slug bandmates Chris Leask (ex-Highway 63) and Bob Helsten (ex-I.S.O.M.) on bass and drums respectively. It's a shame that extreme metal bands from Sault Michigan never have a long shelf life, as Great Bodily Harm's very Pro-Pain-esque take on groove metal was very much welcomed 12 years ago, and these songs are all entertainingly heavy with some hardcore touches, but follow members' other bands to see what else they've done in the E.U.P. before and since 2011!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orb Hearthstone (http://youtube.com/orb609)

Owner: Prolific local metal musician Bob Helsten, a.k.a. Orb Hearthstone, who you may recognize as a vocalist with bands like Integrated System of Machines, End of Existence, and Mugwort, and as a drummer in bands like Clownsack, Power Slug, and Great Bodily Harm, among others

Channel Timeline: Launched on November 25th, 2006; Videos uploaded from April 2012-December 2019

Channel Summary: A personal use channel, Bob has posted six videos here in the past eleven years, including a gag video of a horse-style laugh, while the other five has his own original solo metal music. In the four latter cases, he uses the songs to soundtrack video game footage that he captured, though not always naming the game (the newest one was Teiravon).

Why You Should Watch: While the channel has nothing from Bob's prior local band work, this will be worth checking out for fans of his metal vocals, as the solo material on offer is reminiscent of I.S.O.M. and End of Existence in style and approach! Odd that he would post most of his new original songs this way though, just as soundtrack fodder for gameplay footage, and not always titled with the song's name (let alone that "Dirty Dingos" was only posted as an excerpt), but gamers may feel differently!

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:

Destination: Credited under his I.S.O.M. stage name, Bob's first upload and only song with no video game ties is "Destination", which reminds me of I.S.O.M.'s more melodic material with him not singing in a harsh/extreme style, but adding grit where needed. The song bounces along in a style not unlike something you'd hear out of Sweden, but the thin production is a drawback compared to his band work. Good stuff for fans of his vocals!

I'm not as Eco as I used to be: The most popular video here that isn't of horse laughing, this song is set to video footage from the PC MMORPG game Entropia Universe, and features guest bass from "Refuge MirrorBlack Denied" (no clue who that is). "I'm Not As Eco As I Used To Be" is more of a straight-forward metal song that has a good lively energy and less of the European influence heard elsewhere. Nice change of pace that shows that Bob (a.k.a. "Opeth of Blackwater") can just rock out without going extreme, and Entropia fans seem to like how he edited the gameplay footage too!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profile! This series will return on or around July 27th for another two profile installment, as the first randomly selected channel only had two videos from two different events, so I added a single band channel to fill things out with. We're staying in Sault Michigan with YouTube user 2010abstract's channel (featuring two videos of the future Tantrym Tyme) before heading back to Ontario to look at ander101's channel (featuring three performance videos from ex-Bring The Fallen guitarist Andrew Chiarello). Look for those then, and for more news and notes on the site toon! Thanks everyone!

Josey Scott's Saliva Concert Fallout & Videos!!

Today's post is devoted to Saturday night's Josey Scott's Saliva concert outside of The Machine Shop, so what should you know on this Monday evening? First off, while official promotion didn't make the exact staging of the show clear, it definitely wasn't at The Yard, nor was it completely outdoors as implied, as it took place under a roof at The Rink at The Train Station (f.k.a. The Rink at The Canal District), which sporadically hosts outdoor concerts when not serving as an ice skating rink. You may recall Outspoken Brewing's Oktoberfest being held here last fall. Luckily, it didn't rain on Saturday night, but the roof would have offered some protection that way, while still letting fans of the summer weather enjoy the warmer temperatures! In terms of videos, the only YouTube user so far to post videos is local DJ Ryan Hall, a.k.a. DJ-RJ, who uploaded eight (technically five) videos of the headlining Memphis, Tennessee hard rock band, though sadly, he did not film any of the openers.

DJ-RJ also filmed at the Summer Moon Fest, but these are his first concert videos to cross our radar. Three of his eight Saliva videos are "Shorts" (a.k.a. YouTube's answer to Facebook "Reels"), and are just vertical re-posts of his regular videos. Not sure the point unless "Shorts" are part of his marketing strategy for uploads there, given that it's mostly home to his own DJ mixes (check out this Treble Charger/Birdbrain mashup he just did!) The actual five videos see Josey and crew cover Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name" and Chad Kroeger's "Hero" (which featured Josey Scott himself), while the Saliva originals filmed were "Superstar", "Broken Sunday", and as embedded below, "Survival of the Sickest". That Rage cover is the last one that I want bands to do (exceedingly overplayed), but Josey Scott's Saliva sound good here, and while Josey did struggle to hit some higher/longer notes, he still sounds the part!

How does he compare to Bobby Amaru (who replaced him in and still fronts the original Saliva)? Bobby has a raspier voice and energy to match, and he does justice to Josey-era songs, but you can tell that Josey was the original voice when you hear him. In terms of the venue setup at The Rink, you'd be hard pressed to tell that this was technically outdoors based on the professional staging, and it looks like there was a decent turnout for this one, no doubt helped by years of Saliva airplay on Rock 101! Give DJ-RJ's videos a watch above and below!

Next up, another video was uploaded from the show by former Shit Liver frontman Josh Penno's video production company Spacebag Productions (who filmed openers Spades GT's still-to-be-released music video), which was posted to the Spacebag Facebook page. Josh says that is his "event coverage" of the show, which he filmed for free as a means of getting his name out there as a professional videographer, and he asked that people like/share the video to "get this to the right people's eyes so I can continue to find work in a creative space". This is only 33 seconds long, features the studio version of Saliva's "Click Click Boom" rather than live concert audio (despite also showing the opening bands), and oddly has no video footage period for the first five seconds, but what Josh shot looks excellent, and I do hope that he posts the raw footage online in some fashion! The bands are shown in chronological order by when their set was.

You don't see a ton of Spades GT's set here, but you can probably tell that only four band members were present at The Rink, as rhythm guitarist Jay Sarrazin did not make the trip north for unannounced reasons (at least not online). Don't read anything negative into that, as Jay has a lot of bands on his plate, and he will be coming to the Northern Vibe Festival in August with his Southern Ontario bands Sierra Pilot & Hellrager (Spades GT themselves are not playing in Ophir this year). Give Josh's well shot and edited (if all too brief) video from the Saliva concert a look below!

Finally, sound at the show was provided by 705Live Sound Co. (not promoters Live705), and Mike Blair from 705Live did film one video for their Facebook page, namely this 36 second clip of them playing "Ladies & Gentlemen" (which I know best as the WrestleMania 23 theme song, the year I went in person!)  Further back by necessity (so much so that you can see daylight at the edge of the video), this sounds strong, which is a testament to the band, 705Live, and Mike's camera! If only this wasn't just 36 seconds long. Give it a watch below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's YouTube Channel Profile next! Thanks everyone!

No Funeral - "No Funeral" Album Review!!

It's now time for our 168th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, as we're taking a look at local/Edmonton noise punk duo No Funeral's self-titled debut album! Released to their Bandcamp page on March 5th, this is the newer project from two former bandmates in the Edmonton noise punk band Flint, including guitarist Connor O'Brien and bassist Jamie Vincent (ex-AlgomA/Bad Back). With No Funeral, Connor sings lead vocals too, while Jamie also handles drumming duties. The album was quickly recorded locally at Unsalted Audio last fall with producer/ex-Id Iota/Free Beer guitarist Dustin Goodall, who also provided backing vocals, additional bass, and "musical saw" on the final product. Mat Laporte, who designed the album artwork, guests on saxophone on the two final tracks. "No Funeral" is on sale on a "name your price" model, so while you can stream/download the album for free, consider buying it to support Connor & Jamie's work!

With 10 tracks running for about 28 minutes, let's begin this review with the opening track, "Smear Campaign"! Running for an album-low 80 seconds, this song is basically an explosive anti-smear campaign track. Musically, this is a chaotic post-hardcore-tinged song that fans of Flint will be right at home with (local fans will identify most with Bad Back despite Jamie not being the frontman here). While the lyrics are mostly shouted spoken word, the intensity and directness is to its benefit, and it gets in & out with precision! Second is "Morning Gong" (a metaphor for the sun), which appears to be a reflection of how your current situation is perceived. A much longer and more substantive track, this is less explosive and has more of a discordant deliberation to it that would be easy to scale down to a 1990s alternative/grunge sound if that's how they wanted to go about it.

Connor again more shouts in an intense spoken word than sings or screams, but it works for the aesthetic here, which slowly builds in aggression without getting too hardcore, and I like how this one was laid out as a composition! Third is "Swing Song", which has Connor dressing down someone for a hinted-at transgression that slowly gets clearer as the song progresses.  Shorter but much wordier, the title "Swing Song" is apt, as the structure has a swing-ish riff to it while still harbouring their noise punk tendencies, especially on the more disarranged choruses. and the more pained bridge at the end, with Connor screaming in increasingly passionate ways. He and Jamie meld their sound together well here, but as a pure composition, it's messier than I like compared to what came before. That is followed by "Bad Country" (not "Bat Country"), which is about increasing malaise with life on a long road trip.

Opening with a pounding distorted riff, this alternates between low monotone spoken word and pained post-punk wailing, both doubling up at points, which is an interesting contrast! The song is fairly chaotic when it gets going, but I like the intensity of the guitar work, and the rhythm section fits well, so this is one of the better tracks despite its short length! The first half of the album ends with "Agent of Failure", which feels like (to me) a depiction of being sent to Hell. A very prominent bass riff from Jamie dictates the pace of this song, which feels the most like something AlgomA may have recorded thanks to it's deliberate doomy progression (though most of their songs greatly exceeded 3:17). The dark atmosphere and pointed vocals are to this song's benefit, but I do prefer my noise punk to be faster and more free-wheeling than this. AlgomA fans will absolutely want to take a listen to this one though!

Song #6 is "Spirit Wife", which seems to be about longing for a relationship, toxic as it may be. This ramps the speed back up and again has the vibe of 1990s alternative/grunge but with the noise rock dial cranked to match. Connor's vocals are a little too layered in the mix compared to preceding tracks, but it gets in and out without overstaying its welcome, and it has a good punk aggression without going overboard! Next is "Gag", which is about how bad memories linger and don't just go away. To me, this reminds me more of old school 1970s-80s punk rock early but the second half is more doomy, so it's a tale of two songs in that respect. Honestly, this feels like less effort was put into it than its contemporaries on the album, as it just coasts along at two different speeds, but if you wanted No Funeral to play something a little less noise-influenced, you may feel different about this!

Eighth is "Kiss", a lyrically simple number about what one wants his lover to do to, for better or worse. The third song here to very much remind me of 1990s grunge rock, it arguably captures that style the most without dipping into their noise punk wheelhouse. No Funeral acquit themselves well here, and while Connor's speak-singing may not be ideal for the whole runtime (not to mention the ultra-abrupt ending), it's one of this album's better pure compositions! The penultimate song is also the longest on offer, namely "Storyteller", where Connor makes a graphic request before it's too late. Mat Laporte makes his first guest appearance on saxophone from the start here, adding some background melody as that feels out of place on the slow quieter verses, yet gets largely drowned out on the heavier choruses. The song would be emptier on the verses without the sax, but they still don't feel natural here.

I found the verses as they were to be too drawn out and slow, and while the choruses correct that, they stay on the same track, so this kinda meandered to me in spite of everything. Not a bad song, just not how I would have approached it. "No Funeral" closes with "...And Into The Jungle", which is the most symbolically cryptic song on offer, so read the lyrics tab on Bandcamp to try and read between the lines. This track is essentially a twisted version of beat poetry, with Connor reciting the lyrics in dark, ominous ways while he, Jamie, and Mat play backing instrumentation and effects to match. I won't tell you that this is the best song on offer (it's barely a song), but I admire it as a composition and I admire the choice to end the album with it, and it's a very interesting way to cap things off while also sticking with their prior stylistic choices more often than not!

So, what are my final thoughts on No Funeral's (allegedly) only album? While inconsistent, it delivers enough noise punk goods to leave a strong first/only impression, while also harbouring enough links to both Flint and Jamie's local band work to please fans of their prior back catalogue! Connor's vocals often reminded me of Henry Rollins in approach, if more experimentally applied, and he and Jamie had obvious chemistry that was resurrected in kind on album highlights like "Bad Country" and "Morning Gong", while "Kiss" effectively showcased how well they could replicate 1990s grunge and alternative sounds. For an album allegedly recorded in a few days, it hardly shows, but it's not a perfect product. From the too laid back "Gag" to the sometimes tedious "Storyteller", and even the messier "Swing Song", it wasn't universally to my tastes, but it mostly hits!

"No Funeral" covers a lot of ground in pursuit of their noise punk ideals, and there's a little something for everyone, even if you missed their Outspoken Brewing show last fall (or aren't familiar with Flint), so give this album a listen above, and I hope you guys liked this month's album review! Our next review will be of Handsome Sandwich's debut album "Deconstructed", so look for that in July at some point, and for more news and notes on The Sault Metal Scene later this week! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Handsome Sandwich & Soundcheck), Spades GT Updates, And More!!

Plans for today's SMS post changed when a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (and missed show needing an apology) fell into my lap this morning, so that leads off today's post along with one more new show and some other recent updates. Here's what you should know!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will rock Jay's Piston Broke Pub TONIGHT after previously playing there last night! I profusely apologize for the short notice and for missing yesterday's show, the band did not publicize them on their Facebook page, while the venue only announced them on theirs yesterday morning. I really must do a better job at checking out venue pages when bands don't get the word out themselves, I apologize again, and hopefully yesterday's show was a hit! Same for jam night at the former Reggie's West on Thursday, but we've never covered those as "concerts" here. If you'd prefer to hear Soundcheck's classic and hard rock covers outdoors, then good news, as they'll reportedly be the musical entertainment at TOMORROW'S returning Cruisin' The Dub car show at the newer A&W at 659 Great Northern Road! Again, apologies for the short notice, official promotion does not mention a band.

Late notice or not, Soundcheck have played at multiple car shows at this A&W, and hopefully they deliver the right soundtrack for all of the classic cars, especially as proceeds go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada! Both TONIGHT'S (and last night's) Jay's shows are/were 9:00 PM events with no cover charge and 19+ age limits, while TOMORROW'S car show gig is a 1:00 PM matinee affair for the entire family with no cover. 9&10 News is calling for mostly cloudy weather at 22° during the car show, which isn't as hot as we have had lately! Visit the above links for more details, apologies again for missing last night's show at Jay's, and here's a brand new video of Soundcheck (with no guests)! Uploaded to drummer Glen Thomas' YouTube channel last week, this was filmed at The Esquire Club the night before their Obsession tribute gig there, where they covered Kenny Chesney's "Young".

A staple of their set since Cameron Oliver joined the band, he is solely on vocals here and is not playing guitar. Unfortunately, the filmer of this video was shooting vertically, leading to a lot of panning between 3/4ths of the band and Terry from where they were standing, but this cover comes through well, at least from what I know of this song! I'm not a big country fan, but it sounds on par with Soundcheck's prior filmed versions for the performance quality. Give it a watch below, and don't miss them at Jay's TONIGHT and at the car show TOMORROW!

Next up, local alternative hard rock quintet Handsome Sandwich will make their Water Tower Pub debut on Saturday, July 8th! Their first true solo gig with no support or external headlining bands of 2023, this event will come fresh off of their appearance at the Poutine Feast one week from tomorrow, so these two gigs will literally bookend July's first full week. Still riding the momentum of their "Deconstructed" album release, look for a long night of originals and covers not unlike what fans would have seen from the Sandwich in early-mid 2022 gigs, albeit before Rafael came on board! This is definitely a one-night-only gig, as The Water Tower Pub historically books separate acts on Fridays and Saturdays, but if you're curious as to who's playing on Friday the 7th, keep tabs on the venue's Facebook page, where announcements are usually made a few days prior. This 19+ show has an 8:00 PM start time and no cover. Visit the above links for more details!

We'll close with updates from Handsome Sandwich members Jesse Cook & Johnny Belanger's old band (Jack) Spades GT, who play their first concert in Sault Ste. Marie since 2019 tonight at The Machine Shop! In terms of their recent daily run of (to me) annoyingly restrictive "Reels", those ran until June 14th, with the last four including three more Indie Night In Canada videos from the same filmer (one focused each on singer J.D. Pearce, guitarist Daniel Horton, and bassist James Roy Daley), closing with this preview "Reel" to hype the "Sewer City Radio" album being on "all streaming platforms" (quite an accomplishment if "all" is true!) Again, "Reels" can't be embedded externally, are only uploaded vertically, and can't be played on background tabs, so click above to see them! In terms of the Indie Night In Canada gig proper, Spades GT's set was highly praised by Jay Broderick of LoudTO in this article.

If this doesn't sell Spades GT on the unitiated, I don't know what will! While they said that Indie Night In Canada on June 5th would be their last Toronto show for "some time", I guess "some time" is code for "thirteen days", as they played at See-Scape there this past Sunday to open for Dogo Suicide. Hopefully that later notice gig went well! Lastly, Daniel hyped their show in Cambridge that night using this "Reel" with lots of mirrored and rotated copies of the same footage. Was the chef's kiss well placed? Click here to see, but hopefully the show was a hit! Stay tuned for more on their July plans soon, don't miss them at The Machine Shop tonight, and look for more on the site soon! Thanks everyone!

Josey Scott's Saliva & Northern Echoes Concert Previews!!

As promised, let's wrap up this weekend's hard rock concert previews by looking at two very different shows coming up at high profile locales, so here's what you should know!

We'll start at The Machine Shop TOMORROW NIGHT, where Josey Scott's Saliva will make their local concert debut in a big outdoor concert! I am unsure if this is where The Yard is/was or not, organizers haven't made the distinction. Josey Scott's Saliva is the new alternate version of the platinum-selling Memphis, Tennessee hard rock band that is led by their original frontman, and who do not share any members with the original version of Saliva that played at Muddfest at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino in 2019. Very much an L.A. Guns-type scenario here, but Josey is the original voice behind all of Saliva's biggest hits like "Click Click Boom", "Always", and "Ladies & Gentlemen", so it will be neat to see him in Sault Ontario tomorrow! Detroit hard rock quintet Sponge (of "Plowed" and "Molly" fame) will make their local debut as the co-headliners, and fans of radio alternative rock should enjoy their set!

Local support will include local/Barrie crossover thrash quintet Spades GT in just their second local gig since they relaunched in Barrie in 2021 and changed their name from Jack Spades. Of course, their post-relaunch gig at last year's Northern Vibe Festival won't have been accessible to all, so their first show in city-limits since late 2019 should be worth noting! This will also be Spades GT's first local gig with new bassist James Roy Daley and since Jay Sarrazin moved to guitar. While a belated release party for their new album "Sewer City Radio" is coming next month in Barrie (more on the site soon), this is basically the de facto release party for local fans, so look for Spades GT's newest material during their set and presumably at the merch table! Local southern hard rock quintet Fort Creek will return from the studio as this concert's opening band, so look for a fun batch of hard rock covers & originals from them!

Louisville, Kentucky post-grunge quartet Tantric were slated to play at tomorrow's concert as well, but they were forced to withdraw from the bill due to frontman Hugo Ferreira being currently unable to enter Canada. They were not replaced, but advance ticket prices were lowered in response. Originally advertised as being at The Rankin Arena before being moved downtown, tomorrow's concert is courtesy of Sault Michigan promoters Superior Entertainment in their post-pandemic return to concert booking, and their first show on this side of the border since hosting Dokken & Firehouse at what's now GFL Memorial Gardens in 2017. Sponsored by Rock 101, this all ages concert is advertised to kick off tomorrow at 6:00 PM, and the contingency plan of moving things indoors for bad weather shouldn't be an issue, with 9&10 News calling for partly cloudy weather in the mid-low 20s Celsius, albeit with a 10-20% chance of rain.

Tickets are on sale for $43.50 at this link, down from the $53.50 price when Tantric was still scheduled, and anyone who bought their tickets at that price point will be refunded $10. You can buy your tickets at the gate or at this link, and there will be food and drinks available on site. I hope this show does well, and given Saliva's track record for big hit radio singles in the early-mid 2000s, they should be very recognizable to many readers, especially as Josey Scott himself is touring with this version! Should be a fun time for fans of live rock music, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's Josey Scott's Saliva live!

Finally for this weekend's known hard rock concert previews, let's jump ahead to SUNDAY NIGHT, where local musicians will join forces for Northern Echoes, the Sault Community Theatre Centre's second all-local musician showcase concert of the month! Answering questions about how these two linked events at the former Kiwanis Theatre with similar branding came together, this SooToday article by Chris Belsito from June 5th reveals that the shows are courtesy of a Re-engaging Audiences Fund for Professional Arts Presentation Organizations from the Ministry of Canadian Heritage towards stimulating live performance arts post-pandemic (source here). Good read that spotlights local artistic talent and the S.C.T.C. as a host venue therein! Unlike Soo Soundcheck two weeks ago, Northern Echoes will highlight covers-centric acts, including local funk/hard rock cover sextet The Wyld Stallyns and online page-less alternative/punk quintet Bookclub, in their fourth shared concert since the latter's debut.

Public promotion largely doesn't note the third act on Sunday, but the SooToday article confirms that Soo's Got Talent finalist Juliana Regan & ex-Id Iota bassist Blair St. John will play a joint set, as they have off and on together since 2021. Tickets for Sunday's all-ages, 6:30 PM concert run for $16 (adults), $12 (students & seniors 60+), or $8 (kids 12 and under), and there are plenty of great seats still available at this link, the Station Mall box office, or at the door. This should be a fun night for fans of eclectic live cover music, with The Stallyns and Bookclub bringing more of the rock edge, so keep a trip to White Pines in mind on Sunday, see above for more details, and here's The Wyld Stallyns live!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site this weekend! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Generations) & The First Half Of This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

(Updated at 11:43 PM) Another busy weekend of concerts is upon us, so we're breaking this weekend's hard rock concert previews into two posts once again! As such, look for Saturday's Josey Scott's Saliva concert and Sunday's Northern Echoes event in tomorrow's post, plus anything that may or may not be announced on late notice. Now, here's what you should know, starting with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations will return to Reggie's Place for shows TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this shows were only announced on the band's Facebook group on Monday. Last seen this past weekend at the former Reggie's West, TOMORROW'S show will be Generations' first at the original downtown Reggie's in just over a month, and will see the return of drummer Tony Santoro after he sat out their most recent concert due to outside commitments. A planned Saturday nighter was called off due to "unforeseen circumstances" (Tex & The Ride will be playing instead), but hopefully Valerie and the Jus' Chillin successors deliver a solid night of hard and classic rock covers as usual TOMORROW! This show is at 9:00 PM with no announced cover charge and a 19+ age limit. See above for more details, and for a preview, here's a new video from their Jay's concerts this past Saturday!

Uploaded by Tony onto their Facebook group on Monday (despite him not being at the gig), this cover of The Tragically Hip's "Blow At High Dough" features bassist Pierre Anthony on lead vocals, and guest drummer Chris Johns is behind the kit here, if largely out of view behind Valerie. Solid rendition of this Hip staple, though the visuals are a little grainy, not helped by the vertical camera angle, if zoomed in well when needed. Check it out below, and look for more from Generations at Reggie's TOMORROW!

Next up, we'll head to Sault Michigan and the E.U.P. for a pair of previously announced Friday nighters, starting with local hard rock quartet Tarnished's return to Snows Bar & Grill in Cedarville TOMORROW NIGHT! The only new Tarnished dates in their June concert calendar announcement from their Facebook page that are taking place within a one hour drive of the Soo, this will be Tarnished's first concert in our coverage range since Memorial Day weekend and their first in Cedarville since last fall. No visible frills or promotions here, just a strong night of hard rock and classic metal covers & originals from Alex, Nathan, Isaac, and Josh, so consider heading down to Snows for all of the action tomorrow! This concert has an 8:00 PM start time, 21+ age limit, and no cover charge. Visit the above links for more details on tomorrow's festivities, and here's Tarnished live!

Inching our way north, let's stop in Sault Ste. Marie for local blues/hard rock quartet Project 906's return to The Merchants Bar TOMORROW NIGHT! Surprisingly, this will be Project 906's first Soo date all year, with their last Merch stop coming back in October, so fans in the city will definitely be overdue to hear their hard rock favourites close to home! This will also be their second live concert with new drummer Jason VanLuven (more on his debut with 906 in a second). The Merch still rarely promotes the musicians that play there on their Facebook page, but hopefully the guys deliver a strong night of fan favourite tunes once again! This show has a 9:00 PM start time, 21+ age limit, and no cover. Visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's our first video of Project 906 with Jason behind the kit, namely their outdoor gig at Well Diggers in Kinross last week, courtesy of their Facebook page!

While a chilly night for June standards, the weather otherwise seemed to hold out for 906's concert this past Friday, with an attendee filming them covering Creed's "What If". I think I've seen videos of this cover three times now, so keep that in mind whether you're a fan of this song/Creed or not, but the band & stage were well framed (horizontally, even), and everyone performs strongly! This includes Jason, but given all of the bands he's been in locally, you had to expect that. Give Project 906's Kinross video a watch below, and don't miss them at The Merch tomorrow!

Finally for today's previews, we'll head back to Sault Ontario, where local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard will return to their normal indoor confines for shows at Shooters Downstairs Lounge TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Fresh off of the Queen Street Cruise (more on that in a second), these will mark Bone Yard's return to the Dennis Street nightclub after a month+ away. Fans of this veteran trio should definitely be interested in this weekend's concerts, but if you can't make it out for their hard rocking classic covers, they will be back for a one-nighter in a couple of weeks! Tomorrow & Saturday's shows have no cover charges, 19+ age limits, and 9:00 PM start times. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and for a preview, here's four videos from their Queen Street Cruise sets this past weekend at The Roberta Bondar Pavilion! One is this brief clip of Alex D'Ettore playing a guitar solo on Saturday...

... as shared from attendee Marcy Catherine's personal Facebook page, but the rest are direct live-streams for the band's Facebook page. They include a Saturday cover of Alice Cooper's "Be My Lover", plus Friday evening covers of The Rolling Stones' "Miss You", and as embedded below, their extended jam of Golden Earring's "Radar Love". Alas, all of these were shot vertically, which really isn't to most of their benefit (look at how much of the videos have an empty floor/stage), but Bone Yard sound strong as you'd expect, and hopefully they retained a good crowd during the Cruise weekend! Give these videos a watch above and below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for the Josey Scott's Saliva and Northern Echoes previews (and more) next! Thanks everyone!
