LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Upheaval of an Exorcist), Kiss & Woods of Ypres Updates, And A New SMS Poll!

I don't generally like making two posts in a day, but with news like this, how can I let it slide? Remember to check the post immediately below this one for my review of last night's Garden of Bedlam concert! Anyway, I have a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT and more to share tonight (plus a brand new SMS poll), so here's what you need to know!

On Devil's Night, October 30th, Sudbury hardcore band Upheaval of an Exorcist will finally return to Sault Ontario! This will be their first local show (to my knowledge) since they supported Carnifex at their show in March! You'll likely remember U.O.A.E. from numerous local shows in recent years, and it's great to see them back around these parts! As for support bands, hold onto your hats, cause this show's loaded! Fresh off of last night's amazing concert at The Canadian, local metal bands Garden of Bedlam and Bring The Fallen will both play support! Also on the bill: North Bay's own Inflict, in their first local show since supporting Woods of Ypres in August! Finally, local hardcore band Out Of The Mouth Of Babes (featuring the entire instrumental section of As It Stands) will play what I think is their first concert! Very solid lineup, lots of metal of every type to go around! Click on each of their names to check out their original material!

This concert will take place on October 30th at The Oddfellows Hall (don't hear shows from there much anymore, great to see!) Tickets are $10 (well worth the bands, I'd say), and they will be sold at the door! Everything starts at 7:00 PM that night! Now this sounds like a fantastic concert, I haven't seen a multi-band metal show like this at The Oddfellows Hall in many months! Now, any other weekend, I would be psyched for this show and planning it endlessly! But sadly, I'm going to Detroit that weekend...just my luck that a show this awesome is the weekend I'm out of town! Well, I sure hope you guys go to this show, I'll push it like mad on the SMS! It deserves a huge turnout! Confirm your attendance at the official Facebook event page!

Next up, a confirmation for a band that's NOT coming here. You may remember that I had mentioned that Los Angeles hard rock band Buckcherry would be supporting Kiss on the first leg of their North American tour. Well, I've heard from a few people that Rock 101 reported that Buckcherry will NOT be coming here for the Sault show. Haven't heard any reasons why, but if I do, I'll share it with you guys! As for a new opener, no word on Lion Ride's quest to get on the bill, but I did hear from Wishbone drummer Glen Thomas that they were also contacting Essar Center management in the hopes of being added as support. Might not be a good fit genre-wise, but it'd be awesome to see any local band supporting Kiss, so good luck to both bands!!

And now, an update from local black/prog/doom metal legends Woods of Ypres! They have more new merchandise out for sale, or should I say, old merchandise! They have new black hoodies and t-shirts (in sizes S-2XL) with the Woods of Ypres logo on the front and the phrase "I hope it's cold every day where you are." on the back! These are retro shirts from way back in 2002, which is pretty cool! As well, they're also selling official Woods scarves! If you're interested in these items, scarves cost $20, t-shirts are $25, and hoodies are $45! Send your money via PayPal to woodsofypres@hotmail.com, or via snail mail (with return address) to:

David Gold / Retro Woods

Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Get full details on the new Woods of Ypres merchandise at this location! Stay tuned for more Woods news as I hear it! And while we're on the topic of Woods, it's time to end the most recent SMS poll! As you probably remember, the question was "What is your favourite Woods of Ypres song?". Only 9 votes, but I chalk that up more to personal preference of readers than any lack of activity. The winning vote getter (with 3 votes) was "Your Ontario Town Is A Burial Ground", which doesn't suprise me in the slightest! It's a great song, and it's about Sault Ste. Marie! "Shedding The Deadwood" and "Other" tied for 2nd with 2 votes, "The Northern Cold" and "Song of Redemption" tied at 4th with 1 vote each, and the rest of the choices had no votes.

And as one poll's month is up, it's another poll's time to begin! I'm hoping with this month's question, it will get everyone more inclined to vote, as it's a more general topic that applies to any show that goes on here: Where it's held! So I pose this question to you guys: What is your favourite metal concert venue in Sault Ontario? I'm limiting the choices to just places that are both currently open (so no Arcadia Coffeehouse or Foggy Notions), and have held at least one METAL show in the last year (so no LopLops Lounge or Docks or spots like that.) Your choices are:

The Bottoms Up Lounge: Upstairs from Vincenzo's Restaurant on Queen Street East, The Bottoms Up Lounge has played host to numerous shows featuring local metal guitarist Tym Morrison in recent months, though I haven't heard much else metal from there. Looks like a nice venue, is it your favourite?

The Canadian Nightclub: Located at The Knights Inn on Pim Street, The Canadian Nightclub recently re-opened after extensive renovations. Over the past year, The Canadian has played host to bands like Garden of Bedlam, Aftersight, and Who Made Who, among others! I've always liked The Canadian, it's inviting and brings in some great bands, but what do you think?

Coch's Corner: Located at The Days Inn on Bay Street, Coch's Corner is a great venue in my opinion! They have warm food and beer ready, it's comfortable and friendly, and they book lots of great bands on a regular basis! Locals like Lion Ride, Fitswitch, and Sense of Truth have played there in the last year, along with out of town bands like Ministry of Zen, Black Dog, and All Else Fails, among others! Catch 40 Sons there this weekend! Is Coch's Corner your favourite local metal concert venue?

The Essar Center: Though it hasn't played host to a MAJOR show since Jackyl in May of last year, The Essar Center did have Sault Michigan's own Intrepid at the New Year's celebrations, so it counts! The biggest spot for major big name bands in Sault Ontario, The Essar Center will play host to Three Days Grace and Kiss in December, and has previously featured bands like Motley Crue, Heaven and Hell, and Megadeth! What do you think of The Essar Center as a concert spot? Good, bad, meh? Have your say!

The Lock City Grand Theater: One of the nicer looking and setup concert spots, The Lock City Grand Theater on Queen Street East has played host to many bands, local or otherwise, in the past year, including Woods of Ypres, Gates of Winter, Garden of Bedlam, Carnifex, and Upheaval of an Exorcist! Alcohol is available, sound is good, it's a really nicely set up building. But is it your favourite for metal shows?

Madison's Pub: This is the bar on Pine Street in the same plaza as Food Basics. Metal concerts there aren't that frequent, but Sykotyk Rampage did play there earlier this year! It's not a bad little bar, good pizza, but not reliable for lots of metal. Still, what's your say on it?

The Oddfellows Hall: One of the more frequently used concert spots, The Oddfellows Hall on Dennis Street is minimal, but usually puts on a bunch of quality shows! Cattle Decapitation, Today I Caught The Plague, and Blessed By A Broken Heart have all came to The Oddfellows in recent months, among other notable bands! You can next catch Upheaval of an Exorcist and Garden of Bedlam there on October 30th! What do you guys think of The Oddfellows Hall?

The Outback: The bar at Sault College has most recently played host to Sykotyk Rampage this past weekend, and is a nicely set up spot for shows! Metal is sadly lacking there though, most shows aren't of that genre, and shows require you to be signed in by a student, which is a pain. Lots of alcohol here (badly handled lines at bigger shows though), plus good food and lots of nice seating! What say you guys?

The Speakeasy: A great spot for shows, this is the bar located at Algoma University! It's played host to Woods of Ypres and Quite Frankly in the last year, among other bands! There's a nice concert setup, lots of room, beer, and no sign-in rules! Plus, they put on all ages shows sometimes! I love The Speakeasy, I just wish they put on more shows. You like it too?

The Verdi Hall: The only show this hall on Queen Street West has held in the last year was Stillbroke's return show in April, but it is a nice spot! Very fancy, and well suited for nice shows, with lots of open standing room, good sound, and tables galore! What do you guys think?

VOTE TODAY!!! That's all for now, I'll have more news in the next couple days, so stay tuned! Thanks everyone!
