A New Local Band And Many More Random Updates!!

Sorry about the delay in getting this post up, Blogger has been under maintenance for a few hours, so I couldn't post it earlier this afternoon like I was hoping. Today, I have a bunch of random news updates from the last while to share with you guys, and headlining today is a new local band I recently came across! So here's what you need to know!

Thanks to Mike Boychuk to alerting me to this new local metal band, known as Shit Liver! They are a "grimecore" trio from Sault Ontario, and they appear to have been founded as recently as April. You may recognize the members from defunct local punk band O.B.C.D., namely singer/guitarists Matt Baic and Josh Penno and bassist Mike Kyle, who you may recognize as Bring The Fallen's temporary bassist while Nolan Rainville's been away! But if you're expecting these three to be churning out music similar to their O.B.C.D. work, then you're in for a surprise, as Shit Liver are much heavier! They're more akin to grindcore and old school hardcore, with lots of short chaotic songs full of screaming and grunting! Musically, they're on the same instruments from O.B.C.D., though it looks like Matt drums and Mike contributes some singing as well. They have five songs uploaded to their MySpace page, only one of which is longer than 2 minutes, and if you want some moshable grindcore, this should do! Very raw and unpolished, though for this type of music, that's definitely intentional! Also check out their bio on their page, which doesn't mince words about their past and what they want to accomplish with their new crust/grind sound! Click here to check them out, see what you guys think!

Next up, might there be a membership change in local hardcore band Out Of The Mouth Of Babes? Well, see for yourself at their MySpace page, where among the listed band members, it now says "???? (Drums)". If you know your local bands, you'll know that OOTMOB's only drummer since their inception has been John Mignacca, who has played with the majority of the band since the early As It Stands days, including the only live local OOTMOB concert at Algoma Hope4Haiti. Now the fact that his name is removed from their MySpace is telling that something is up with the band, but there have been no official statements made there or on any band page. If it is true that John is no longer with Out Of The Mouth Of Babes, I have to say I'm surprised, I really liked his drumming and he was always a welcome presence behind the kit! As for what's next for the band... I don't know when this was posted, but the band's MySpace page does say that they're hitting the road in the summer of 2010. It's pretty much the summer now, and we haven't heard anything about any 100% confirmed shows yet, maybe there's something in the works? I'll keep you guys posted with any updates I find about Out Of The Mouth Of Babes, be it the drummer situation or anything else!

Thirdly today are tons of excellent new concert photos from SooToday's Donna Hopper! On Wednesday, I alerted you guys to the "Friday Hot Shot" picture of Lion Ride guitarist Marky Lion that was featured on SooToday. Well, the rest of the photos that Donna took at the concert are now all uploaded onto her photography Facebook page! We never did get a review on SooToday, but this will do just fine, 26 photos from the concert, including 9 of Sense of Truth and 17 of Lion Ride, and they're all excellent! WAY better than mine! It'd be cool to see colour versions of them too, but the black and white is good to set the mood! Donna always impresses with her photo work, definitely makes me wish I could afford a better camera sometimes! Check out more of Donna's photos at this location, she has loads of great stuff there from other concerts and more!!

Next, here's some updates from local drummer Glen Thomas' local music news site The Barking Eye! Last Monday and Tuesday, Glen posted two articles in his "Local Drummers Showcase", where he plugged some of his favourite fellow drummers in the Sault area! Part One can be viewed by clicking here, and probably most notable to metalheads is the presence of Sense Of Truth drummer Ryan Haryett, or his online handle "Kev Riain", which Glen credited him under. Glen praised his energy and dynamics behind the kit, and hyped Sense of Truth itself as well! The piece also takes a look at former Gates of Winter drummer Jimmie Chiverelli, though solely for his work in Kalle Mattson, himself (for he is a well known and very prolific local drummer) and many more! The second showcase (check it out here) takes a look at some more talented local drummers, including Mike Oakley from Sneaky Pete, one who used to drum in a Kiss tribute band, and lots more! Glen shares a lot on these drummers, they are well worth reading! Glen has much more coming up on The Barking Eye, including an interview with George Ravilch from Crank Sound Distribution and much more, follow his site for lots more interesting news stories and profiles!

Finally for today is another Blogger-based site you guys should take note of, and it is the official blog for The Kewadin Casino 25th Anniversary Summer Festival! Launched on May 13th, it's basically a news source to alert fans and possible attendees to news concerning the festival! It includes most of the stuff we already know, along with some extra tidbits, including reassurances that Bret Michaels is still on to perform at the festival as scheduled, that there will be 17 mostly local bands performing over the three days (with a full announcement coming in the next few weeks), and profiles on some of the celebrities to be appearing! I'm following this blog on my Blogger account so as soon as an update is posted there about the bands, the festival, or anything else, I'll be sure to let all of you know! You guys can do the same too, click here to follow the Kewadin festival blog to get more details on it!

That's all for today, I will have more on Woods of Ypres, SBD, and more in my next post, so stay tuned for more! And remember, if you have ideas on what we can do for our third anniversary, click here to voice your opinion!

  1. Shit Liver is horrible. That band doesn't deserve a few word blurb at the end of your blog let alone being the first thing we see. Shit Liver sounds like garbage and you know it.

I find a lot of your reviews of bands overly positive, like nobody can go wrong. Being positive is great but when thats all you do and then we get served a piece of 'shit liver' then it starts to feel disingenuous.

  2. Thanks for the comment! I do see your points, and I appreciate the criticism!

I put them first cause they're a new band I discovered, new bands usually get the first spot in a post, regardless of quality. There are people I've talked to that didn't mind Shit Liver. You didn't like them at all, and I completely respect that!

Also, no offense meant here, but I don't run this to not cover certain bands for their sound, metal subgenre, quality, or talent. I don't run this just to cover the absolute best bands musically, this is for all local metal/hard rock bands.

No band is hated by everyone either. Chances are, if I didn't cover Shit Liver, some fans of theirs would complain eventually. It'd be unfair of me to exclude a band simply because some SMS readers or myself alone didn't think they were good, cause chances are, the opinion isn't unanimous.

I'm not trying to be disingenuous at all, I'm trying to present news and bands on level ground. I want to be positive so I don't offend or insult any bands. I do have criticisms on here, but I don't want to anger or offend anybody in or connected to local bands either. So I'll say what I think about them, regardless of how some might perceive it.

Thanks again for the post, I appreciate it!
