With the first concert weekend of June upon us, here's the first of this weekend's concert previews! We'll segment them by each side of the border due to the amount this weekend, but before we get too far, just a reminder that former Half Past frontman Luke LeBlanc's funeral will take place tonight at The O’Sullivan Funeral Home at 7:00 PM, with visitation beginning at 5:00 PM, so if you were friends of Luke's and want to pay your respects, keep that in mind. Now, here's what you need to know, starting with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!
Local hard rock solo musician Tym Morrison's ongoing weekly concert arrangement at The Harp Bar & Grill will continue into the month of June, including shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, but not before he makes his debut at a venue we don't hear about too much! Apologies for the short notice, all of these shows were only announced a few days ago on Facebook. For the first time since his Chicago Cookshop gig in February, Tym will step outside of The Harp's confines TONIGHT when he makes his public debut at Gliss Steak & Seafood, which is the restaurant and occasional concert venue located in the Quality Inn at 180 Bay Street (you may also remember that Tym played at least one private gig at the old Gliss location on Great Northern Road.) Interesting change of pace, but hopefully Tym's Gliss gig goes well TONIGHT, and keep it mind if you'll be downtown!
For fans and regulars of his Harp concerts, he's confirmed new shows there for TOMORROW & SATURDAY, so we'll add other June dates to our calendar too, including June 12th, 19th & 20th, and 26th & 27th, with the 13th absent due to The Harp's likely broadcast of UFC 188 that night. While none have an announced cover, TONIGHT'S Gliss show has an early 6:00 PM start time and no announced age limit (though keep the restaurant setting in mind), while the Harp shows all have 10:00 PM start times and 19+ age limits. For more details, click here & here, don't miss Tym's entertaining covers during his busy month, and here's Tym and the late Luke LeBlanc!
Next up, local party/classic hard rock trio Stiffler's Mom will return to The Rockstar Bar TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via it's official Facebook event page on Tuesday. After a month or so away from the stage, this will be Stiffler's Mom's first publically announced date since their Rednecks stop on May 9th, and it'll be nice to see Greg, Mike, and Jon back in familiar territory for a fun night of hard hitting covers! Note that this is a one-night-only gig due to what The Rockstar Bar's marquee announced as a Thin Ice concert on Saturday, but note that the venue and band haven't confirmed this online. In any event, TOMORROW'S Stiffler's Mom show has no announced cover charge (but bring cash just in case), a 10:30 PM start time, and a 19+ age limit. For more details, visit the above links, and here's Stiffler's Mom live last year!
Moving to previously announced concerts, the fourth installment of J.D. Pearce & Tidal Records' Gonqshow concert series goes down TOMORROW NIGHT, as two debuting bands and one recently returned band will join forces at The Algonquin Pub! The announced headliners are Id Iota, the new local punk/alternative(?) quartet featuring alumni of Free Beer and The Dirty Few, but will their live sound (including an all-original set) bear more resemblances to Free Beer, the short lived Habitat Shuffle, or be something entirely different? Find out tomorrow! Joining them are local hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven in just their fourth ever concert, second since their new lineup debuted last month, and their first at The Algonquin Pub. Nice to see the Sense of Truth successors playing more regularly, and hopefully they leave another positive impression tomorrow night!
The openers will be new local rock trio Caroline Divine, who now have an official Facebook page, so what should you know on them? We'll give them greater detail in an upcoming post, but the Frasiers successors are described as "hair/glam metal infused power pop", which is definitely intriguing, so welcome them to the stage tomorrow as well! This 19+ show has a $5 cover and 10:00 PM start time, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and don't miss the new and reunited artists TOMORROW as they make strong early impressions! For a preview, here's Skeyes of Seven live in their return set last month!
Finally for today, the aforementioned Id Iota and Caroline Divine will be among the performers at SATURDAY NIGHT'S second annual Lopstock concert event at LopLops Lounge! Yes, Lopstock II is back for another go round of last year's well received "bohemian conclave", albeit now credited as being promoted by Gnaeus' Brendan Garlick rather than Ears & Eyes Online. The original Lopstock was a hit, and they're going even bigger this year, complete with out of town bands for the first time, Crank Sound Distribution on hand, as well as 5 returning bands and many of the same artists in new bands, so who all is playing? Local alternative hard rock trio The Pixo Control will headline at midnight, with folk/garage quintet Honest Job at 11:00 PM, and Burlington folk rock project Kirby playing at 10:00 PM. Note that the nighttime bands are oddly segmented from the first six bands courtesy of a 3 hour break from 7:00-10:00 PM. No word on why it's scheduled like this, but it'll be interesting to see if the break gets a positive response and occurs again!
Guelph blues/garage rock band The Galacticats cap the daytime portion at 6:00 PM, with post-punk quartet Gnaeus at 5:00 PM, acoustic trio K.I.C.K. at 4:00 PM, Caroline Divine at 3:00 PM, indie solo act Aldous at 2:00 PM, and Id Iota opening the day at 1:00 PM. Tickets are $15 for all day or $10 for either the daytime or nighttime section, but note that only the daytime bands will be available to all ages (the last 3 bands are 19+). Nice diverse lineup featuring some alternative bands for SMS readers and
many LopLops regulars, with talent as far as the eye can see, so don't miss Lopstock II THIS SATURDAY, and here's The Pixo Control at last year's Lopstock!
That's all for now, but stay tuned for Sault Michigan and potential late notice concert previews tomorrow, plus more news! Thanks everyone!
