R.I.P. Chuck Ayotte

The Sault Metal Scene sends it's deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Fistmagnet guitarist Chuck Ayotte, as news broke on Facebook yesterday that he had passed away. This sad news follows Chuck's brief battle with pancreatic cancer, which he was diagnosed with in December, as detailed in the family's GoFundMe page. Details on his obituary and services have not been unveiled at press time, but he is survived by three children and one grandchild, among other extended family, and we will have more information when appropriate. Local punk and metal fans will best recognize Chuck from his work with Fistmagnet, one of the most popular local punk bands from the early-mid 1990s, including many memorable concert sets at venues like the Ramada Inn, as well as their cassette tape EP "Piss on the Pieces", among other highlights. Their legacy lives on via contemporary hardcore punk sextet Destroilet's frequent cover of "Evil God Hater", while a Fistmagnet reunion show had been teased off and on since 2014.

Chuck was also a member of other local bands, including some in Vancouver during his time there, but only being a child during his musical heyday, I am admittedly not the right person to reflect on his local music career. I didn't know him personally, but I know he was a devoted father, a kind soul, and a talented musician, and hopefully everyone can reflect on those positive attributes. Hopefully some of his music turns up in a publically viewable format soon, and click here for details on the golf tournament in his name that will be held on May 1st at Crimson Ridge. R.I.P. Chuck!
