Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Oddfellow

It's now time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile, our monthly spotlight feature on a local metal, hard rock, or punk band that's no longer active in the local music scene, but still deserves a current look! As usual, this month's band was randomly selected from our inactive band links. Concluding our latest 2-1-3-1-2-1 cycle between the Twin Saults, we have a very notable band from the 2000s E.U.P. music scene, so here's what you should know!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oddfellow

Genre: Hard/Progressive/Indie Rock

Hometown: Cedarville, Michigan

Members:

Jason Haske (Paradise Excuse, Chump Change, S.C.O.W.), vocals/guitar
Seth Haske (S.C.O.W.), vocals/guitar
Phil Kasper, bass
Odin Osogwin (Riot! By Night), drums

Audio/Video: With Oddfellow having been defunct for over a decade, videos are in short supply, with only this low quality drum solo on the band's MySpace page known to exist publically. However, Oddfellow did release one studio album entitled "Go" in 2005, which was posted onto YouTube back in 2010 by fan Morgan Suszek, and which I reviewed on the SMS in 2012. Here's the opening song from the "Go" album, "Tricks"!

Info/Analysis: Related in name only to Sault Ontario's Oddfellows Hall, this Eastern U.P.-based band launched in 2001, and were self-described as "highly charismatic" and as playing "a unique catchy form of rock." At their mid-2000s peak, Oddfellow played shows all over Michigan, including strong runs in battles of the bands in Detroit & Petoskey, and the guys were frequently covered in Sault Michigan & St. Ignace news publications, while receiving plaudits from Northern Michigan rock radio personalities along the way. Oddfellow were last seen following their Traverse City date in March 2008, with members largely living apart at present, but frontman Jason Haske remains a familiar sight in local rock cover bands like Paradise Excuse. From what I've heard of "Go", I enjoyed Oddfellow's varied brand of hard rock on tracks like "Down" & "Operator", and they showed good diversity and chemistry!

Their softer and more minimalistic songs were less effective, and I preferred Jason's deeper vocals to Seth's higher pitched singing, but Oddfellow had a fun sound that often dove into harder-edged territory well, and hopefully we see the guys reunite down the road!

I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! This series will return on or around April 10th when we kick off a new 2-1-3-1-2-1 band cycle by looking at two Sault Ontario bands in our second double profile of 2019, as the first randomly chosen band doesn't have much in the way of public information. As such, we'll be looking at inactive punk supergroup Brad Example & The Role Models and mid-2000s As It Stands predecessors Second Guess, so look for these next month, and stay tuned for more news and notes soon! Thanks everyone!
