LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison), New Videos, And Much More!!

Had to rush a post on this Wednesday evening due to a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for TONIGHT, and rounding things out, we have a new music video, a local band's American TV appearance from over a quarter century ago, and some assorted recent updates. Without any further ado, here's what you should know!

Local acoustic hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post for a second straight week TONIGHT! I profusely apologize for the short notice once again, Tym only confirmed this date via its Facebook event page this past Thursday, and unlike last week's Wednesday nighter, it was not created through his proper solo Facebook group, rather his personal account. Yes, two consecutive shows booked on a Wednesday, which is very unusual (the exact middle of the week?!) and not that unusual (Tym has played weekly gigs on Thursdays before) all at once. If this proves to be a regular Gliss-esque arrangement for the summer, I will definitely preemptively add Wednesday shows to our listings, but I'll wait to see if he's playing there on Wednesday the 15th first. For now, be at The Trading Post waaaay down Great Northern Road TONIGHT for all of the outdoor musical action!

Like last week, you can see Tym's diverse and extensive setlist of hard and classic rock favourites TONIGHT at 7:00 PM with no cover charges or age limits, and the weather should hold out just fine! Next up, I left this out of our announcement of their set opening for Elliott Brood next week due to the post already going long, but local indie/punk quintet The Northwest have unveiled one more advance single for their new EP "All In" in advance of its official release on Friday! Uploaded to their YouTube channel this past Friday, this is for their new song "Stay Gold", and like their prior video for "Shoreline", this is treated as more of a lyric video (again made up by Andrew Sowka), but it's not just words on a background. Here, the lyrics accompany various upbeat and summery video clips, like footage of a carnival, cars driving, the beach, and a couple enjoying themselves outdoors, so there's definitely more of a general theme here than a plot, unless you're analyzing the lyrics. I'll hold comment on the song proper pending our eventual review of the whole EP, but give The Northwest's new video a watch for yourself below!

Also, here's an episode of an old Buffalo-area music show named Nickel City Scene that aired on local television there in 1995 & 1996, later being relaunched for a time in the 2000s, but why is this relevant to the SMS? Because inactive local/Toronto indie/punk quartet Treble Charger appeared in the fifth episode from March 1995! Many old episodes of Nickel City Scene have been uploaded to the official YouTube channel as of late, and they do serve as a very intriguing spotlight into the live music environment in Buffalo and neighbouring Southwestern Ontario in the mid-1990s, so definitely keep tabs on the channel if you're at all curious! Then hosted by Jackie Thurn, episode #5's feature on Treble Charger begins 5:58 into the 22 minute episode with a nice promotional spiel about their early momentum and their choice to sign with Sonic Unyon Records (who are profiled at episode's end) over Sony Canada.

Their music video for "10th Grade Love" is played in full next, followed by Jackie noting why they changed their name from nc-17 (the name also given to their debut CD), and how you could buy a copy, either in Canada or by asking Nickel City Scene for assistance on importing to the US. If the appearance was tied in to a Buffalo/Hamilton-area show, she didn't give details on air for it. Solid bit of promotion for Treble Charger here, especially to a largely American audience that won't have known much about them yet, and the whole episode is definitely worth a watch if you're curious about mid-90s alternative and indie rock! Finally, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• After a month+ hiatus from new public activity for personal reasons, local alt-hard rock musician Mike Haggith revealed on his Facebook page on Sunday that he will return to the annual Nickel Days festival in his current Thompson, Manitoba homebase on June 25th, headlining the local matinee block before Canadian rock legends Prism perform later that night. Great to see Mike back at Thompson's Rotaryfest equivalent festival in a few weeks, and stay tuned for more from him!
• New Sault Michigan hard rock band The Nameless have belatedly confirmed their full lineup on their Facebook page, with Joshua & Michael joined by guitarist Nick Fish (who I'm not familiar with) and former Absolute/Highway 63 drummer Justin Lawless. Interestingly, they also credit Justin's wife Anna as a vocalist, and while she did not sing during their Three One Three show in April, she is the woman seen in band pictures uploaded after the fact. Time will tell how the band looks for show #2, but it's great to put 100% put names to faces!
• Sault Ontario/Barrie crossover thrash quartet Spades GT's next announced out of town gig will see them and nine other Southern Ontario bands play at Cornwall Chaos, a free benefit show for the Cornwall Hospice on August 13th. Should be a fun marathon for punk fans, so click here to get more details via the official poster! Spades aside, no one is familiar from prior tour dates in the Soo.
