Warning, this post may be a bit punk-leaning, but anything I talk about here is definitely metal enough for SMS discussion! And luckily, this'll be a good post, as I have a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!! Stay tuned after for some cool updates!
Sault Ontario natives Detroit are returning for their first local show since 2008! According to a post by bassist Mark Rand on The 705 Scene Forums, Detroit will be playing at Coch's Corner on December 29th! This will serve as a CD release party for their upcoming album, which will be titled "Brace For Impact" (Expect a review of that in 2010!) Also joining Detroit for this show are local punk/metal band Destroilet, in what I believe to be their first ever live performance! Local punk band Talk Shit round out the lineup. You may remember them from the Upheaval of an Exorcist show in February, among other concerts! Even though it's at Coch's Corner, there will be a cover charge, but it's only $5. And yes, it's 19+.
Should be a good show, pencil me in as an attendee! I've still never seen Detroit live, but I plan for that to change! Three members of Lion Ride playing punk-influenced hardcore? Sounds like fun to me! You guys should consider making it to this show as well, after all, it's been almost a year since they last played locally (coincidentally, Talk Shit were on that lineup too!) Also been wanting to catch Destroilet live too, great to see them playing! Get more details on this show at this location! As I hear more about this concert, you'll find it here!
Next up, I realized last night that there was some metal-related items from an area radio station that I'm surprised I never mentioned on the SMS before. Overdue? Yes, but by no means not worth talking about! Now I'm sure many of you listen to Classic Rock: The Bear, the Rudyard-based station which you can find at 97.9 FM. Well, metalheads, are you listening to it between 7:00 PM and midnight during the week? Cause that's when "Nights With Alice Cooper" is on! Yes, the shock rock legend (and headliner of at least four Sault-area concerts) hosts his very own radio show Monday-Saturday at 7:00 PM, and it really is a good listen! Lots of great music (by Alice and other artists), plus some cool segments, like trivia, movie reviews, requests, and more! His jokes sometimes fall flat, but he knows his stuff, and it's definitely an entertaining program! So check out Alice Cooper on The Bear when you get a chance! (Got nothing to listen to Sunday though? Eddie Trunk on Rock 101, same time. That'll fill the void!)
While we're on the subject of The Bear, here's a tidbit that might pique your local interest. You know who the DJ is between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM? None other than Bad Side guitarist Jason Mapes! Ok, now I have to listen to The Bear more often for that fact alone! He even started The Bear's official Facebook page! Interesting also to note that both he and Bad Side frontwoman Melissa Krahnke are area radio DJs (Melissa's a morning DJ on 99.5 Yes FM!) So there's some local metal tidbits to throw out there! The Bear airs more metal than you'd think, give it a listen!
And finally, here's something very interesting that should appeal to punk and metal fans alike! Guess which band was in town on Tuesday night? THE MISFITS! They were coming through here from Southern Ontario on their current Canadian tour, and according to The 705 Scene Forums, they had supper at Joey Calzones and were shopping in the mall! Now how about that? Frightlight/Fitswitch frontman J.D. Pearce got to meet them too, and got singer/bassist Jerry Only's sweater, plus their new CD, an autographed poster, and an all access pass for the show in Thunder Bay! I also heard that Sense of Truth bassist Curtis Beauchamp got to meet them too and got some Misfits swag! Now that's just awesome, but it sucks that they didn't play here, cause that would be epic in itself! It's like when Lamb of God stopped through here all over again!
That's all for now, more news to come very soon! Thanks everyone!
if all goes as planned you can check out The Misfits and FRIGHTLIGHT live next summer! cheers
