SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Splitshot), Weekend Concert Previews, And Two New Bands!

Hey guys, it's time to get you all caught up on some new stories, including a pair of new band additions to the SMS and this weekend's concert previews, but first, some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!! (Also, check out our latest Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile in the post below this one!)

Thanks to Ernest Beaumont for telling me about these concerts, I wouldn't have heard about them otherwise. Sault Michigan hard rockers Splitshot will be playing a weekend set at The Bird TOMORROW AND SATURDAY NIGHT! Both concerts will start at 10:00 PM, there's no cover charge at either, and you must be 21 to attend either show. Note that these concerts are not listed on the band's official Facebook page, which doesn't appear to have been properly updated since early last month, and I don't know of any other official band pages, but Ernest has always been a reliable source for shows dating back to the Nixxon Dixxon days, so these are a go! If you need concerts to hit this weekend across the river, Splitshot should do the trick! Remember, they're the new local hard rock band featuring Chris Hubbard and Kyle Beaumont from Nixxon Dixxon, and though I've yet to hear anything of theirs, they've gotta have something going for them! Check them out this weekend if you can, and consider this our first previews for this weekend's concerts!

Before we launch into the remaining previews for this weekend, here are the two new bands I came across, and we'll start with a Sault Ontario solo project I only just came across this week! The project is named "The Shaner", and it's the mastermind of a local guitarist named Shane D. (not entirely sure of his last name.) Influenced by southern rock and metal, he's posted 20 instrumental original tracks onto his Reverbnation page, with apparent hopes to compile some of the songs on a full length album. The Shaner doesn't appear to be active at present, with no visible updates since at least the spring of 2010, but I will say that Shane does have talent! He has some heavier tunes with nice aggressive riffs like "Redeux" and "Righteous Own", but diversifies with bluesier fare like "Tin Blues" and even some more funk based material. His production isn't too bad either, and he has an ear for good and catchy riffs! I don't know if Shane's still active locally, but he has promise, so check out The Shaner at the above links!

The other new band is, to the best of my knowledge, a new page for a band we featured here briefly two years ago. In late 2009, you may remember when we featured a local metal project named Metallurgy that sounded promising, but had no real information. Well, their MySpace page was deleted about a month later, but it looks like Metallurgy are back! That, or a band of the same name, but I have a hunch this is the same band. This time around, I can confirm that the mastermind of this project is Sault Ontario guitarist Neno Jovanovic, and he has posted two songs onto his Reverbnation page as well! Both appear to be newer uploads, including an original demo with some nice riffing, and a cover of Motorhead's "Ace Of Spades" where Neno plays guitar along with the original vocal track from the song. He mostly has it down, though it was a bit surprising to hear Lemmy! Metallurgy are definitely active at present, and we'll have to see what pops up from Neno and/or Metallurgy in the next while!

Now, we'll return to the weekend concert previews to close the post, and firstly, we'll head to The Rockstar Bar for some Turner Up! Yes, after a two week absence from the concert stage (Foggy's jam nights notwithstanding), the local classic hard rock quintet will be back at The Rockstar Bar tomorrow night and Saturday night for pair of concerts! Though announced short notice, fans will surely just be happy they're back, as two weeks off is a long time for Turner Up! Both of this weekend's concerts will be at 10:00 PM, with 19+ age limits and no announced cover charge. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! I'd like to remind everyone that, largely thanks to my camera's return to working condition, I will be at The Rockstar Bar on Saturday night to check out Turner Up for our first concert review of 2011! I've yet to see video or hear audio of them with Krista Marshall on vocals, so this will be a good first sample, and I'll have a review, photos, and a video on Sunday, so stay tuned! And check the above links for more details on this weekend's Turner Up shows!

And finally, Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison is back for another solo acoustic concert this weekend in his continuing arrangement at a local concert spot! Note that I didn't say two concerts, as according to the schedule on his official website, his planned show at The Big Cheese in Heyden tomorrow night has been cancelled, as well as his planned shows there on February 11th and 25th. Why? I don't know, though I'll chalk it up to existing commitments at The Big Cheese, but I honestly can't say. With that said, his Foggy's arrangement has no imminent breaks, and he'll absolutely be back at Foggy Notions on Sunday night for loads of acoustic hard rock and metal covers! The show starts at 10:00 PM, you must be 19 to make it in, and there is no announced cover charge. It's great to see Tym out there again rocking out and entertaining his fans, and it helps fill the Caveman Morrison void that we've had for the last few months! If you miss him on Sunday, you have ample opportunities to check him out through February, so check the above links for more details!

For a video preview, here's something I literally just found: A new Tym Morrison acoustic solo original! Entitled "How I'm Wanting You More", he uploaded it onto his official YouTube channel on Sunday, and it's a reserved but emotional and well played acoustic number, and it would fit in nicely at his solo concerts! Check it out below!

That's all for today, but I have more news to share tomorrow, so keep an eye out for that, plus my Turner Up concert review, our next Defunct Local Band Profile on Nite Wulfe, our next poll, and more! Stay tuned!

Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile: The Northern Ontario Black Metal Preservation Society

One year to the day after we started this series, I have decided to post our first profile of this series for 2011 early to mark it's one year anniversary in a fitting fashion! As you know, I've covered an out of town band featuring this musician every three months or so over the past year, and this is his last out of town band that I know of that we have to cover here, unless a posthumous band page or a new project come to light. Today, we now come full circle a year after profiling his work in Will of the Ancients, so here is our first Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile of 2011! And as always, if you have corrections, edits, or additions to help make this as accurate as possible, please tell me! (UPDATED: November 26th, 2013)
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Northern Ontario Black Metal Preservation Society (Cochenour, Ontario)

Lineup: (Saultites in RED; ex-members in italics)

David "Veillko" Gold (vocals, guitar, bass, and drums)
Aaron "Platinus" Palmer
(vocals, guitar, bass, and drums)

Official CBC Music page: http://radio3.cbc.ca/bands/The-Northern-Ontario-Black-Metal-Preservation-Society
Official Twitter page (Veillko): http://www.twitter.com/veillko
Official Twitter page (Platinus): http://www.twitter.com/platinus_nobmps

Local Info: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native David Gold had a very prolific resume of bands from here and abroad before his sudden passing in December 2011, including Sault Ontario's Woods of Ypres, Gates of Winter, and Proposition 86, and for his drumming roles in out of town bands like Necramyth, Will of the Ancients, Thrawsunblat, Mister Bones, and L'anguisette! His talents and prolific band history attracted many fans and followers, and have helped lead to Woods of Ypres' signing with Earache Records in 2010! David is missed to this day, and hopefully his legacy and band work lives on!

Band Bio: The Northern Ontario Black Metal Preservation Society was a two man metal project formed by David Gold and his former Woods of Ypres bandmate Aaron Palmer, under their respective stage names "Veillko" (as David has used before) and "Platinus". David and Aaron were part of the original Woods of Ypres lineup from 2002, and recorded "Against The Seasons: Cold Winter Songs From The Dead Summer Heat" together before Aaron relocated to Thunder Bay in 2003. In October 2008, David and Aaron reconnected musically due to their relative close living conditions at the time (Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa), and set out to record black metal that captured the feelings & environments of Northern Ontario. The band didn't see much activity until the fall of 2010, when they released two original songs with the intent of releasing them on a vinyl single named "Future Northern Prosperity" in early 2011. In this project, both David and Aaron planned to record and write one original black metal song a year, with each musician drumming on the other's track, but this plan did not continue in 2011, and the project is presumed defunct following David's death later that year.

With only two songs to go on, I don't have a lot to draw on for my thoughts on the NOBMPS' sound, but I am impressed with what I've heard! Aaron's song "Rediscovering The Divine" reminds me of a shorter and better produced version of "Against The Season"-era Woods of Ypres, and he shows more than capable black metal singing to add to the clean singing we were already familiar with. It seems like it could be heavier and longer though, and a guitar solo would have been nice to add. The drumming's great as well, David shows it once again! David's song, "Northern October", has more of a "Woods III" style to it, and is my favourite of the two songs. David's black metal singing is harsher than Aaron's, and the song is more aggressive, longer, and a bit more melodic, though it has flaws too. I'd still love to see a guitar solo (though the lack of one reminds me of classic Woods), Aaron's drumming strikes me as more conservative (but still technically sound), and the song can get repetitive at parts. Both Aaron and David crafted some solid black metal here that harkens to their musical pasts while encapsulating the feelings of their surroundings, and it's too bad that the project didn't produce more during their run!

The "Future Northern Prosperity" single is available on iTunes for just $1.98, so support Northern Ontario black metal and pick it up there! A planned physical release (including vinyl pressings) never made it out that I can tell. Both songs are streaming at the above links too, but be supportive and pick it up officially! For a sample, here's David's song from the NOBMPS, "Northern October"!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There we go, this series has begun in high fashion for 2011, and next month, we'll continue with another profile featuring a local musician that was featured in this series a year ago! In February 2010, we profiled The Sexual Vigilantes featuring Brenton Ellis, and next month, we'll profile his newest band, Maximum RNR! Watch out for this between February 13th and 19th, and stay tuned for more news, weekend concert previews, and our next Defunct Local Band Profile very soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Half A Man & Turner Up), Hammerspace News, And Our New Weekly Classic Video!!

Well guys, it's time for some news, and this is a big post, including the latest from a Sault Michigan metal band, our newest weekly classic video, and our top stories, FOUR LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!! Here's what you need to know! (EDIT: 7:10 PM)

Brimley, Michigan hard rockers Half A Man have announced a concert for February 3rd at The Bird! This will be their first live appearance (to my knowledge) since their Halloween house party, and it will also be their first concert with Mikey Bishop filling in for Doug Reed on drums. Mikey's more than qualified to fill in, and you know that he has good chemistry already with Half A Man frontman Erik Rintamaki from their older metal bands, so this should work out well! Local metal band Hammerspace are scheduled to open, and it's been a while since we've heard much from them around here! I'll elaborate more in a second, but they are the announced openers. It will be a 10:00 PM concert, with no announced cover charge and a 21+ age limit. For more details, visit Half A Man's official Facebook page! Nice to see both bands back in action, especially with Mikey filling in and the somewhat sparse amount of shows we've heard about from both bands, so head to The Bird tomorrow night if you're across the river! Stay tuned for updates!

Before we leap into the other new concerts, I wanted to discuss Hammerspace a bit, as we haven't heard much from them recently. I'll take some blame, as the band had been posting updates on a now deactivated Facebook page through the fall, as recently as November 26th. The page can still be checked out using Google's cache of it, and through there, I can verify that Hammerspace welcomed back bassist Tim Padoba in late September. A month later, they announced that Kirk Labadie was their new singer, replacing guitarist John Bergeron, who was the band's singer as well prior to then. I can't recall Kirk from other local bands, but the band have a number of new songs posted on their MySpace page that may feature his singing, but I can't verify that for sure. The songs sound good, especially "Corkscrew", and the singing is an improvement from earlier material. Note that the songs take a while to load for some reason, so be patient if they don't seem to work. However, Erik from Half A Man confirmed to me that Kirk is apparently out of Hammerspace already, which is unexpected, but hey, there must be a good reason! Aside from a so called "bust" of a show at The Merchants Bar in September with Scofflaw, I can't say much else, but Hammerspace are apparently back next month with Half A Man at The Bird! My guess would be that John will be singing again, but if I hear anything else, I'll let you know!

Back to new concerts, as a classic hard rock band returns to the stage after a two week break! That band is Turner Up, who will hit the stage for the first time in 2011 THIS WEEKEND at The Rockstar Bar! This is a short notice weekend of shows, but the event page was only just created yesterday, and I'm sure loyal fans won't mind the wait! Their planned New Years Eve show was called off, and two announced concerts at Docks last weekend were quietly dropped, so if you've missed them this year, now's your chance! They'll be at The Rockstar Bar on Friday AND Saturday, both shows have 19+ age limits, and there is no announced cover charge. For full details, click here! Nice to see Turner Up back out there, and I'd like to add that I'll be out to see them this weekend! My camera charger's FINALLY back from Detroit, and I promised myself that I'd be out to a concert as soon as I could when it got back, and Turner Up will fit nicely! I should be at the Saturday show at The Rockstar Bar, and I hope to see you guys there! Stay tuned for more in our weekend concert previews tomorrow!

(EDIT, 5:07 PM: The previously announced info concerning the next metal night at The Roosevelt Hotel was a bit premature. My original sources for the first confirmed band have removed the links confirming their involvement, so their either jumped the gun or dropped out. We should know details on the lineup tomorrow, so stay tuned! Sorry for the premature announcement, my info was sourceable when I was originally compiling news for this post.)

And finally, here is our second weekly classic video! As was the case last week, I have a video from a non-YouTube site to share and upload for you guys to check out, and like last week's As It Stands video, this one ties in with an upcoming concert! In this case, it's a video of Turner Up from last summer during their short stint with Brent Royer on lead vocals! A former singer for the defunct local band Settle For Silver, Brent was only in the band for about six months last year, in between the Todd Killam and Krista Marshall eras. This is the only live video I've seen of Turner Up with Brent behind the mic, and it's of the band covering Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Wanna Be" at The Rockstar Bar! Good quality, and it shows their talents well, even if it's not the heaviest tune. They have heavier stuff though, you have my word! This video was originally uploaded by Turner Up bassist Jeff Gray onto his Facebook page, and was filmed during a concert last summer by an attendee. The original video can be accessed at http://facebook.com/video/video.php?v=418431376644. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED, I mean no harm with this upload! People should see this video, it deserves the attention! So check out our newest classic video below, and I should have a new video with Krista Marshall on vocals this weekend!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more tomorrow, including weekend concert previews and maybe more! Thanks everyone!

Mike Haggith - "Suspended Animation" CD Review!!

Hey everyone, it's time for our first CD review of 2011, and our fifth new album review in the past six months! This month, we're reviewing the newest album from a recent (yet prolific) addition to the local metal/hard rock scene, that being local solo artist Mike Haggith, and the album in question is his 43rd and latest album, "Suspended Animation"! Recorded locally and at what's now Galactic Records in Windsor, Ontario in late 2010, it was released on January 3rd, 2011 on CD by request and later for online purchase on January 5th. The album features Mike Haggith on all instruments, primarily vocals, guitar, and keyboard. Described as an "upbeat rock album", "Suspended Animation" has underwent some major track listing overhauls since 2010, but is now available to buy for all who are interested! The album is available on CD by contacting rotten_records_2008@hotmail.com, but if you want it via download, just click here or visit Mike's official online store! It costs $4.50 for the full album package, or you can buy individual songs for 99¢. I recommend the full album for the savings you'll receive, but that's up to you!

If you want to sample each individual song, all can be streamed at this location or this YouTube file (which is linked below through each song title), but if you like what you hear, then buy the album! Nine songs clocking in at around 40 minutes of music, so let's begin the review with track one, "Sun Perfume"! (Updated on October 26th, 2012)

"Sun Perfume" starts with an almost synthed sort of opening before Mike's singing unexpectedly starts, and it does capture attention! His singing style is somewhat unique from most local hard rock singers, as it's melodic and clean, yet deeper than you'd expect. It suits the song's tone here, which does match his claims of this being an upbeat rock album. My biggest complaint is there isn't a lot of variety to the song, and it can get repetitive, especially given it's length of under three minutes. The instrumentation seems to repeat for much of the song, though it's all well performed, and it has a sort of abrupt ending. Overall though, it's a harmless and fun opener with creative lyrics and it shows that Mike has an ear for good melodies! Second is "The Institution", which opens with police sirens and honking horns, which sets up the tone of the song well. It's hard for me to pinpoint a singular meaning, but it ranges from allusions to a pandemic and social upheaval and the effects of serotonin, "the happy hormone". The song makes heavy use of samples to illustrate a chaotic environment, and Mike's riffing suits that with a heavier and darker tone than "Sun Perfume" utilized. The vocals (though mixed a bit high) are about the same in range, but the lyrics have more resonance. The music is (on the whole) heavier and grittier, but it seems muffled at points on it's own. Still, this is my favourite of the opening two songs, and it has a sort of "driving" feel to it that makes it stand out along with it's heaviness and mood!

Next is "The Ledge/I Love You Anyways", a title which implies it has two parts. Mike provides no vocals until almost halfway through the track, so I assume "The Ledge" is the instrumental part. The song starts off with a heavy, yet almost ominous instrumental section that eventually includes synth and chime effects in the background. It's hard to describe, but it's effective at setting a mood for the song and it's latter half. When the vocals launch in, Mike uses his melodic singing well amidst repetitive (yet original) instrumentaion, but I think the music could stand to be softer. This is the "I Love You Anyways" part, after all, and the lyrics do seem to fit better with a slower ballad-type of song. It's a solid track though, and it showcases his musical strengths well, while correcting the high vocal mix from the last song. The ending seems to be going for a bit of an orchestral feel as well, which I'm always a fan of in themselves! I like this song, but it seems to float in the void between a soft ballad and a heavy rocker, and I think it'd be best suited to go for one extreme over the other. Good stuff though!

The fourth track is "Hot Summer Sun", which is definitely the slowest and most introspective of the songs so far. The opening is very light and soft, but it suits the lyrics and tone well. Once the singing finally kicks in, I was actually surprised at how well Mike kept a soft melody! His tone and style isn't much different, but he uses his range really well here to suit the material, and it's probably his best vocal work so far! He doesn't let the overall song delve too soft though, as the guitar riffs have a slow heaviness to them in the verses. Aside from my own preference of heavier stuff, my only real complaints are the repetition we sometimes see and the abrupt ending. It's not the heaviest track on "Suspended Animation" by any stretch, but it works for the mood it wants to the set and the the he wants to convey, and it succeeds on that basis, especially vocally!

After that, we have "Trinity", which is seemingly about rescuing a loved one and taking them to a happier place. His lyrics aren't bad at all, make note of that! This song also takes from the softer and heavier aspects of his music, featuring heavier low-toned instrumentation and melodic singing. My biggest complaint is Mike's double tracking of the choruses. I know what he's going for here, but they're too different from each other for it to flow, and it sounds like one of the "Mikes" is off from the other. Everything else is about on par with Mike's strengths, but I thought the inclusion of a ballad-esque acoustic section before the final chorus was a nice twist! Good song overall! Sixth is "As Memories Fade Away", another song with strong emotional lyrics, focusing on the extended feelings the title character has after the death of their loved one. Like with "The Ledge/I Love You Anyways", this song seems like it is too heavy for the subject matter, when a song with this emotion might be better suited to an acoustic ballad. Aside from that, the guitar and synth work is dependably good, and Mike's vocals show the right emotion for the subject matter without getting too up-tempo. The keyboard solo was a nice sight as well, and even if it is heavier, it's at the right pacing and key for you to get the intended feelings. If you're in the right mood for this song, you'll definitely find yourself appreciating it!

The seventh song on "Suspended Animation" is "The Day They Killed Small", which is probably the most low-tempo song so far, with more subdued instrumentation and very low, soft, and determined vocals. Focusing on the title character's apparent feelings and repressed love, the song is another that is surprisingly downbeat and emotional compared to the apparent upbeat material we were expecting. With that said, this song probably best matches the lyrical content of any of the past few songs, and it suits the song well, including a nice use of the keyboard and some added effects. It's not the most varied song on the album, or the most energetic, and it does end abruptly like some earlier songs, but it's a solid song that accomplishes what it set out to do! Eighth is a live recording of his song "Nightmare On Reed Street", which returns to the more high-tempo heavier sound that we saw on "The Institution". The song has a heavier driving riff and nice melodic singing, and the horror-movie influenced lyrics show real promise! It's a great song in and of itself, but I have two complaints: It's too short, and it shouldn't have been live. The song ends abruptly and it never felt like it expanded on the cool subject matter as much as it could have, with only three minutes to work with. The live recording feels authentic, but it's not as clear as it could have been, especially vocally. Still, this is a standout song that's worth checking out!

The album's final advertised song is "1980", a lengthy track that draws from 1980s influences with atmospheric instrumentation and high use of synthesizers. I can detect the sound he's going for, and it mostly works, especially since he's not copying any specific bands or cliched genres! Mike's singing mostly fits the song, although his falsetto parts before the actual lyrics begin seem forced and a bit off. This isn't especially heavy, dark, or high-tempo, employing a softer deliberate style that works well enough, even if it's not too heavy, and ends abruptly again. Good song, but it kinda ends the album in a too light fashion than we'd previously seen...or does it? A secret unlisted song named "The Move" is included about 13 seconds after "1980", which is probably the slowest of the songs on "Suspended Animation", and fairly dark in tone. The song gets pretty repetitive but it's deliberate pacing does give the song an ominous feeling, and Mike shows proper emotion with his vocals! As an album closer, "The Move" is better to cap things off, but it doesn't show off a wide range of instrumentation compared to some earlier songs, and like so many earlier tracks, it ends way too abruptly. It's an effective song though, and a nice surprise!

So how would I rate my first experience at a full Mike Haggith solo album? Well, I give him credit for his very prolific output, and he performs to his vocal and musical strengths on this album! His singing doesn't change much from song to song, but his unique tone and melodic style work on each track! He is very skilled at multiple instruments as well, and can play some very solid hard rock riffs and bass lines, along with some nice keyboard and synthesized sounds that you don't hear much locally! Plus, he's very good at writing lyrics, and has many songs that tell good stories, which is nice! I admittedly haven't heard as wide of a range of Mike's solo material as I'd have liked, but "Suspended Animation" is very promising! However, there are things that could stand to be fixed a bit. I'd like to see Mike show more variety on individual songs, as many did get repetitious after a while, and too many songs ended abruptly without a real closing section. The double tracked vocals weren't as clean as they could have been when they were used, and many songs had buried instruments (particularly the drums) compared to singing that was sometimes too high in the mix. And also, the album was described as "upbeat" when many songs seemed to be more introspective, dark, and emotional compared to my thoughts going into listening to the full album.

With that said, "Suspended Animation" is still an entertaining album full of solid hard rock tracks, that range from heavier rockers like "The Institution" and "Nightmare on Reed Street" to slower material like "Trinity" and "As Memories Fade Away", and I did enjoy listening to this album! A couple of songs would benefit from being in the right mindset beforehand, but if you go into it expecting some solid solo work from a talented local musician, you shouldn't be too disappointed! I personally recommend "The Institution", but there's some good quality stuff here that we'll surely see more like in the future, and I definitely plan on looking at more of Mike Haggith's solo work this year!

So there is this month's review, kicking off what should be an exciting 2011! But what will we review next month? Well, here's what I'm planning to do. If a new album from a local metal or hard rock band comes out by mid-February, we'll review that. If more than one comes out, I'll probably review the more prominent of the released albums. Note that if Sykotyk Rampage release either of their new albums in the next month, they won't be reviewed as it will still be too soon from my "Bella Disgusta" review, and the same goes for other artists who we've reviewed albums of in the last 6 months, just to ensure a spread out schedule and no artist bias. If no new albums come out, we'll review Bad Side's third and final album, "...Bad Things Come In Threes"! We're a bit off schedule for Sault Michigan reviews as it is, so the next month that comes up with no new albums will absolutely be reserved for Bad Side's last album, so keep that in mind! So whether we review Bad Side III or something new, our next review will be between February 12th and 18th, so stay tuned! That's all for today, but stay tuned for a new post featuring some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Maximum RNR) And More Assorted News!!

Hey everyone, news has been slow over the past weekend, so I'm cobbling together my leftover cache of news for today, and hopefully I'll have more news and notes to share after TOMORROW'S Mike Haggith CD review! For now though, we'll start off today's news post with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!

Since his departure from Lion Ride early last year, I'm sure many of you have heard what local musician Brenton Ellis (a.k.a. Diamond Brent Panther) has been up to musically. Brent, under his old Lion Ride stage name, joined the Toronto hardcore punk band Maximum RNR last summer as their new singer, and after a tour run in Europe and a bunch of Southern Ontario gigs, Brent's finally coming home with Maximum RNR next month! I think this is Brent's first local concert since Detroit's last local show to date in December 2009, and at parts, Detroit and Maximum RNR have a similar sort of feel to them, so if you want a nice mix of punk, hardcore, and metal, this would be a good show to hit! It will take place on February 19th at Foggy Notions, and Maximum RNR will be joined by two more local bands that skirt the punk & metal boundaries! One is local horror punk quartet Frightlight, and the other is old school hardcore rockers Destroilet, in both of their first shows of 2011! They'll be right at home with this concert in terms of sound, and all three bands have a ton of momentum, so be sure to consider going! I'll be there, pending my camera charger's return, of course! This show will have a $3 cover and a 10:00 PM start time, and you must be 19 to enter. For full details on this concert, visit the official Facebook event page! Sounds like an awesome show, I'll keep you posted with updates as they come in!

Next up, Glen Thomas over at The Barking Eye has raised an interesting question in his newest posting there. What if there was a website for local musicians to sell their music? He's apparently been contemplating the idea for a while now, and when you first think about it, there could be a market for this. He figures that with only The Rad Zone left as a store that sells multiple local musicians' albums, an online store to market, promote, and sell music from local talent would be a logical next step. If he does launch into this, it'd just be for local bands and artists (maybe relocated Saultites too) who want to sell mp3 copies of their material on an independent site. There's a ways to go before he jumped into this 100%, but read what he has to say at this location. What do you guys think? I'd assume it'd be slow to get going unless some big name local bands agreed to sign on, but I think there's a market for a store like this.

The Rad Zone can be far for some people, many bands only sell their albums at their own shows, and certain local artists probably could get more press and attention if they sold their albums on a local focused site, rather than selling material through other major online sites. I do question Glen's feeling that single song downloads would be best, as that defeats the purpose of albums that many bands work hard to write and create, but still, this is an interesting thought. Check the above links for more, and if Glen furthers this idea, I'll let you all know!

Thirdly, here's an unexpected cameo by a local band in a belly dancing video, of all things! Loryen Zeytin, a Brazilian belly dancer, has uploaded a video named "Mesopotamian Metal II" onto her official YouTube channel, which includes a section where she dances to Sault Michigan death metal trio End of Existence's song "Recurring Dreams"! This take place from 1:22 to 2:02 in the video, and it's definitely something I didn't think I'd see! With that said, she is an attractive woman, and though I'm not sure how to accurately critique belly dancing, it looks like she knows what she's doing! The audio seemed very low though, is that just me? The video includes 16 belly dancing scenes set to numerous metal bands, including bands like Blind Guardian, Dream Theater, and Acrassicauda. Good stuff, and this is definitely interesting compared to a lot of local band appearances we see, so check it out below!

And finally, here's five smaller news stories in alphabetical order by band name:
  • I can now confirm Changing Waves' complete lineup! The band includes Benjamin Kallonen on vocals, his old Face First bandmate Devan Lauzon on bass, and both of the Hagerman brothers (from Paraside), Mike and Alex on guitar and drums. Good to know, especially with band information so sparse, but hopefully that will change! Thanks to Devan Lauzon for the information!
  • Half A Man have announced that veteran local drummer Mikey Bishop will be temporarily filling in for Doug Reed on drums for the next little while! Mikey's currently best known for his work in Summon, but local metalheads will remember Mikey and Half A Man frontman Erik Rintamaki as former bandmates in bands like Lower S.E.S. and Bludgeoned! Good stuff, and they have a gig to announce soon apparently, so keep an eye out!
  • New local metal quartet Late & Loud are now on MySpace! The page includes basic band information and an upload of their jam session cover of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper", but nothing glaringly different is there compared to other pages. It says they're playing a show tonight at The Outback too, but I've heard nothing on it, so it could just be an open mic night or something. Click here to check out their new page!
  • SooToday's most recent Friday Hot Shot was from Lion Ride's local concert on December 28th at The Canadian Nightclub! It appears to be a shot of Marco Lion and Cobra Carmander mid-song, and it's a nice preview for what should be a great album from Donna Hopper, whenever it's posted! Click here to check it out!
  • All of Woods of Ypres' past studio albums (Woods I-IV, plus "Independent Nature") are now on sale on iTunes through their new label Earache Records! Except for "Against The Seasons" going for $4.95, the rest go for $8.99 or $9.99. If you want to buy them on iTunes, click here, but note that you must have iTunes already installed on your computer to purchase them through there. For more info, check out this poster!
That's all for today, but stay tuned for our review of Mike Haggith's "Suspended Animation" TOMORROW, and more news to come as well! Thanks everyone!

A Newly Discovered Local Band, Our Next CD Review, And More!!

Hey guys, I know I probably should have had a post of some kind yesterday, but things have been a bit busy lately for me, but I'm back with lots of big news! Today, we have a new local concert video, the identity of our next CD review, and a newly discovered local band, but kicking things off is a new concert addition! Why is that first and not the new band? The stories share a link, you'll see! (EDITED: 4:11 AM)

New local hardcore band Changing Waves are the newest confirmed band for February 19th's all ages concert at The Oddfellows Hall! Presented by Bonology Lights & Sounds (who are now in our Other Local Links section on the left), Changing Waves join fellow local metalcore rockers As It Stands as openers at this show for Right From The Start and Calling Ocala, two high energy pop rock bands from London, Ontario. Nice to see Changing Waves back out there for this concert, although it would still be nice to learn more about them, especially given the lack of an internet page that I've seen. However, I do know a few details about their lineup, though not a whole lot. I can confirm from Jeremy Hannah and Mitch Sirie that Alex Hagerman, drummer from defunct local group Paraside, is in the band, and a wall posting from Nathan Bouliane (this show's promoter) confirmed that Benjamin Kallonen is Changing Waves' frontman, which is good to know! If anyone out there has more details on Changing Waves' lineup, background, or any possible pages, let me know! But for now, remember to hit the show on February 19th for a good dose of local hardcore and exciting pop punk! Click here for more details on this concert, and I will keep you posted!

Going back to Changing Waves for a second, when I heard that Benjamin Kallonen was their frontman, I did some searching online to see if he's been in any other local bands. Well, as it turns out, he was, though not on vocals! Ben was the guitar player in a short lived metal project from early last year called Face First, who were active on their MySpace page for just a single week in February 2010. Only one other member existed in the project, drummer Devan Lauzon, though I can't verify if he has any other connections to Changing Waves. The lack of a mention of Sault Ste. Marie on the page is probably why I never found out about Face First until this year, but the band did have high hopes for the future! Ben and Devan were looking for new members to join them and were hoping to "take over the world". The music on their page has promise, especially "Enjoying The Chaos" and "Closed In Fate", which have nice riffing and a metalcore feel to them, but the first two songs drag at parts. There was a lot of refining to do though, and it'd be nice to hear vocals, but both guys show skill, even Ben on guitar! Check the above links for more on Face First, and they're now in our band links on your left!

Next up, Mike Haggith's new album "Suspended Animation" is now on sale on his online store! All nine tracks are now available to preview and then download, but if you want to preview full songs beforehand, his Reverbnation page does have some free full length tracks. The album is available for just $4.50, which is a good deal! Individual tracks go for 99¢ each, but you will save almost double the total cost if you just buy the full album package by itself. Unlike many of his other albums on his store, ringtone versions aren't available. If you would like to buy a copy of "Suspended Animation" via mp3 download, click here! With that said, I would like to officially announce that our first CD review of 2011 will be of Mike Haggith's new album, "Suspended Animation", and it will be posted online in the next week! I have already purchased the album, so I'm good to go, and I've already given it a few listens. My thoughts? You'll see when I post the review, but do give Mike a chance! He has so much material and enough talent that there's gotta be stuff you can all enjoy! Also note that this will be our fifth review of a new local metal/hard rock album in the past six months (December is the exception), so even though the new album season may be slower than expected, new stuff is crawling in! Stay tuned for my review in the next few days!

Finally, here's the newest live video from local metal trio Sativa Rose! Once again filmed and uploaded by frontman Adam Veale's dad John, this also comes from the New Years Eve show at Foggy Notions. and like with their "Lucretia" video, they're joined by promoter Rich Moreland on guest vocals! This time though, they're covering Metallica's "No Remorse", and Rich supplies his own take on the vocals by death growling them, with beer bottles in hand! The band are great as always, they have a nice handle on this song with no major flubs, but the death growling is a bit off to me. Rich is a really good growler, almost going grindcore at parts, and I could see him singing for a death metal band, but I think this is the wrong song for this style. That's not a negative comment though, just not the best track for this type of vocals. At least I could hear him better than in the "Lucretia" video! Good stuff though, check out the "No Remorse" cover below, and stay tuned for more news from Sativa Rose!

That's all for today, but I have news from Woods of Ypres, End of Existence, Late & Loud, Half A Man, and Lion Ride to share in the next little while, along with our Mike Haggith CD review and our next Saultites In Out Of Town Bands profile next week, so don't go anywhere! Thanks everyone!

Concert Previews For This Weekend!!

Hey everyone, it's time (as usual) for our weekend concert previews! As far as I can determine, we have seven metal or hard rock concerts from Thursday-Sunday, so let's go over everything you should know for your concert going this weekend! And in case anyone asks, I may not be able to hit any shows this weekend, partly because of my camera issues (family commitments too), but my charging adapter is finally being mailed from Detroit today, so it should be back here next week! For now though, here's all you need to know for this weekend's concerts!

First, we'll head to The Roosevelt Hotel for TONIGHT'S next metal night! Three local metal bands will return to The Rosie for a night of mayhem at 9:00 PM tonight, including headliners As It Stands! A little over a week after they headlined Soo Music Mash-Up, the fast rising metalcore quintet will headline another entertaining concert, with their new originals sure to deliver tonight! Joining them are local death metal band Bring The Fallen, also in their first show since Soo Music Mash-Up! With loads of devastating extreme music in store, make sure you don't miss their set tonight either! Opening the show are The Bear Hunters, who've logged in a few high profile and well received sets since their live debut last month, so make sure to be there early for their own brand of death metal originals and covers! Despite the relative short notice of most of these metal shows at The Rosie, Rich Moreland has been booking loads of quality bands for these shows, so don't miss tonight's if you can help it! Tonight's show starts at 9:00 PM, there is no cover charge, and you must be 19 to enter. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! I hope I can make it for this one if possible, but if not, PLEASE go for me and have a moshing good time! Videos would be cool too if anyone has a camera! For a preview, here's As It Stands playing their original "Conception" last month at The Oddfellows Hall!

Next up, we'll take a quick detour to Sault Michigan, as a local hard rock trio make their first stop at The Rapids Lounge at Kewadin Casino of the year! A busy year for Kewadin's bar/concert spot begins tomorrow night and Saturday night when Monkey's Uncle return for a weekend of hard rocking covers and originals! Featuring Henry Switzer of The Mama's Boys on vocals and guitar, Jim Belleau on bass, and Hair Trigger drummer Ron Suchey, Monkey's Uncle always deliver a fun set of hard rock songs in any of their local stops! Though it's hard for me to verify dates of theirs at other venues, they are absolutely at The Rapids Lounge this weekend! Both tomorrow and Saturday's shows should start at around 9:00 PM, you must be 21 to get in on both nights, and there is no cover charge. For more information, click here or the above links! If you need something to do or check out this weekend across the river, Monkey's Uncle should fit the bill nicely! For a preview, here's Monkey's Uncle covering Nickelback's "Figured You Out"!

Back to Sault Ontario, as we'll head to Docks Riverfront Grill for a pair of classic hard rock shows this weekend! Despite earlier claims that Turner Up would be there this weekend, we now know that That's Chester will be rocking Docks tomorrow and Saturday night! These five local music veterans will be sure to deliver a high energy set of your favourite covers this weekend, so make sure not to miss them! There is also no announced cover charge for both shows, you must be 19 to enter, and the show will start at around 11:00 PM each night. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! These should also be good shows, with That's Chester launching into a likely busy 2011 in style at one of their favourite stomping grounds! Check out all of the above links for more information, and for a preview, here's That's Chester covering Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Time" from a 2006 show!

And finally, Tym Morrison's back for two more acoustic solo shows! First, he kicks off his first show in his new weekly arrangement at The Big Cheese, the bar/restauarant in Heyden that he has been a regular sight at in past years! This arrangement will see Tym at The Big Cheese every Friday, with shows scheduled every Friday through at least February, starting tomorrow night! Then, his Foggy Notions arrangement continues on Sunday for another acoustic solo set there! Like with the new Big Cheese deal, he'll be at Foggy Notions every Sunday through February as well, so there is loads of music in store for you fans of Tym's local work! If you want to mellow out with some great acoustic metal and hard rock covers, then make sure to head to Heyden or Foggy's this weekend! Both shows have 19+ age limits, I assume he'll be on at 10:00 PM at both venues, and there's no advertised cover charge for either night. For more details, click here for the event page for tomorrow's show, or here for details on his Sunday concert. For a video preview, here's Tym covering Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" last month at Foggy Notions!

That's all for today, in our eighth post already of 2011! Stay tuned for much more very soon, including our next CD review and more news very soon! Thanks everyone!
