I was expecting to post this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles today, but very SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS hit our newsdesk tonight, and leading directly from them, Kewadin Casino have announced their concert schedule (pandemic permitting?) for The Rapids Lounge in Sault Ste. Marie and The Northern Pines Lounge in St. Ignace through March 26th! The band lineup hitting both locations is largely similar to what fans have been seeing at the lounges in 2021, so let's look at the hard rock bands coming back!
Local hard rock quartet Rhythm & Brews will return to The Rapids Lounge in the Soo for shows on Friday, February 4th & Saturday, February 5th, but before then, they will make their St. Ignace debuts at The Northern Pines Lounge TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! I profusely apologize for the short notice, I only caught wind of these shows via personal Facebook posts by band members that went online this morning, and while the band proper has not plugged these shows on their Facebook page, Kewadin's entertainment page was quietly updated to reflect these shows at some point in the past month. Wayback Machine back-ups of the St. Ignace Kewadin's entertainment page indicate that Rhythm & Brews are replacing Sault Ontario classic rockers Touch of Class this weekend, presumably due to border complications for returning to Canada, which has been all over the news lately.Rhythm & Brews were last seen in their debut concert weekend at The Rapids Lounge in July, following their surprise withdrawal from a Rudyard gig last month. Hopefully Brandon, Chris, Brett, and Ron's brand of crowd-friendly hard rock delivers TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT, and I again apologize for these making the site so late! Both this weekend's shows and February's Rapids Lounge return have 9:00 PM start times, 21+ age limits, and no cover, but please honour & respect Kewadin's public health guidelines if you're coming out. See above for more details, and we'll share preview videos of them live when they surface!
Also, we can finally answer an unanswered question from this year's schedule: Who are Frybird? As it turns out, that was a typo on Kewadin's behalf, as their name is actually Fyrbird, as in "Firebird" with a Y. While not local, they are a Manistique-based rock duo who have been active since 2017, though they only started playing Kewadin gigs in the E.U.P. last year. Based on their range of covers on their YouTube channel, Fyrbird would definitely fit our coverage with a sizeable amount of hard rock renditions in their set, classic and modern alike, and I would have covered their shows here last year had the R & Y been switched around in venue advertising! In the first quarter of 2021, Fyrbird are only scheduled for one concert weekend, which will see them return to The Rapids Lounge in Sault Ste. Marie on January 28th & 29th, so keep these dates in mind for some rough and tumble two man rock cover action!
As above, these shows are 21+ events with no announced cover charges and 9:00 PM start times, but please follow and respect any public health and social distancing measures in place at the Soo Kewadin to keep everyone safe, as usual. See above for more information on Fyrbird!
Finally for today, it's only natural that we have shows to cover from Traverse City metal trio (and Peril's sister band) Scarkazm to add to the calendar, as they will return to The Northern Pines Lounge for concerts on Friday, March 4th & Saturday, March 5th! Like Peril in the Soo, we haven't seen Scarkazm's live show in St. Ignace since the pandemic started last spring, though you may have seen this band in the Soo in October, with a return for New Year's Eve at month's end. Adam, Dave, and Jeff's hard hitting brand of covers have proven to be a live favourite north of the Mackinac Bridge over the years, and hopefully their return to St. Ignace will deliver the goods for fans early next year! As with the above dates, expect these to be 9:00 PM affairs with no cover charges and 21+ age limits. Visit the above links for more details, and we'll let you know when more Kewadin Casino hard rock concerts are announced!
That's all for today, but definitely stay tuned for this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles next! Thanks everyone!
