LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Soundcheck), Weekend Concert Previews, And New Videos!!

I hope everyone had a good Christmas! The last concert weekend of 2024 is upon us, as is our last batch of weekend concert previews for the year! Of course, New Year's Eve has shows too, which we'll address over the weekend separately. Due to the amount of concerts this weekend, I'm holding our preview of Bone Yard 225's Saturday nighter at Shooters for our next news post, so look for that then, but here's what you should otherwise know in a hard rock sense for this weekend in Sault Ontario!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will play their purported final nightclub gigs as a band TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at Jay's Piston Broke Pub! Apologies for the short notice, the shows were only publically announced via the venue's Facebook page on Monday (these will likely be the last shows that Soundcheck didn't publically advertise on their own Facebook page, as their farewell gig on Tuesday was plugged there). Last seen at Jay's early last month (not counting singer/guitarist Cameron Oliver's acoustic country matinees there since), this will be your last chance to see him, Terry, Jim, and Glen in a traditional nightclub setting before disbanding after their New Year's Eve concert at the YNCU Curling Centre, so don't miss out if you like their hard rocking and classic covers TOMORROW or SATURDAY NIGHT! Note that Soundcheck (or anyone else) are not hosting jam night at Jay's tonight, as the venue closes early at midnight for Boxing Day, so they already said their Thursday farewell.

If you were curious, Jay's is not open late on New Year's Eve (closing at 6:00 PM that evening, source here), nor hosting a band, so you'll have to party elsewhere on Tuesday night. Soundcheck are up TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at 9:30 PM with a 19+ age limit and no announced cover charges. Assuming the breakup holds, it will be unusual to not see Soundcheck on the weekend cover circuit after over 8 years, so don't miss out in the west end TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, and here they are live!

Next up, we'll move to shows that had advance public notice before this week, and we'll start at The Water Tower Pub, where local classic/hard rock cover duo Dodge This will return for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Announced via the venue's December concert calendar but not the band's own Facebook page, this will likely be Dodge This' final show of 2024, and it will be their first announced show anywhere since rocking The Dive last week. Hopefully lots of fans of Jason and Jamie's unplugged covers come to this long-standing central venue tomorrow night for The Water Tower Pub's third-to-last show of 2024! Remember, they host different acts nightly, with country duo The Dustcovers playing there on Saturday and local disco tribute band The Saturday Nights headlining their New Year's Eve party on Tuesday. Tomorrow's concert is at 8:00 PM with a 19+ age limit and no cover charge. Visit the above links for more details, and here's Dodge This live!

Also this weekend, local hard rock quintet HeadFirst will end their 2024 calendar with shows at Reggie's Place TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Two weeks removed from rocking The Esquire Club, these will be HeadFirst's... first shows at Reggie's in just over a month, and their last of the year before reportedly stepping away from the stage to work on new material in early 2025, a Sudbury road trip in three weeks aside. However, the guys have promised to play new unreleased original songs for attendees at Reggie's this weekend, so keep that hook in mind, especially as we don't know when we'll next see HeadFirst on a public concert stage in the Soo! Bone Yard 225 will be playing at Reggie's on New Year's Eve, and our preview of that show is forthcoming this weekend.

As usual for weekend local bands at Reggie's, you can see HeadFirst tomorrow and Saturday night at 9:30 PM with 19+ age limits and no cover charges. Should be a fun time for fans of this talented young five-piece, so don't miss out on HeadFirst's 2024 finale, and here they are live!

Finally, let's head back west to The Esquire Club, where the similarly named local classic/hard rock cover quintet Headrush will end their 2024 calendar TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Fans of this relatively newer 1980s throwback group last saw them (publically) at the same venue in mid-November, and it should be a fine way for the Johns, Wes, and crew to cap off a busy first full year together! You can enjoy Headrush's hard rocking covers tomorrow & Saturday night at 9:30 PM with 19+ age limits and no cover charges, and I have not seen public reference to The Esquire Club's New Year's Eve plans on Tuesday (if any). Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and for a preview, here's some brand new videos of Headrush live at The Esquire Club last month! These were posted by bassist John Amendola to their Facebook group in a batch post alongside photos from the night, so what can you see there?

The two videos include covers of Toto's "Hold The Line" (albeit 11 vertically shot seconds of it), and as embedded below, AC/DC's "Highway To Hell". While that video is horizontal, the filmer uniquely pointed the camera at the audience from stage level for most of it, so you get a unique view that readers who don't frequent the Second Line West nightclub don't see often in videos. What we hear of Headrush sounds good and energetic in both clips, despite neither being of a full song, so check these out above & below in advance of their Esquire Club return this weekend! Also, did you know that the word "Balkan" is Turkish for "mountains"?

That's all for now, but stay tuned for our Bone Yard 225 preview and more on the site soon! Thanks everyone!
