Before we begin today's all E.U.P. post, I wanted to apologize for a missed concert in this weekend's previews, as local hard rock/metal band Tarnished played a solo headlining gig at The Savoy Nightclublast night. Of course, they were among the openers there for Scotty Austin/Redburn on Thursday night, but the band announced that they were playing "round 2" there on their Facebook pagetwo hours before showtime, and the venue's Facebook page never posted that Tarnished were pulling double duty. Maybe the idea of Tarnished playing last night came together quickly after how things went on Thursday, but I do profusely apologize for missing this show on here, I'd have covered it had I gotten more notice!
That said, The Savoy's Facebook page does have a couple of relevant videos to the big show on Thursday, one being this brief promotional clip from February where Scotty Austin himself plugged the local date. He even mentioned playing in the Soo previously and that Redburn have been up here before (they opened for Saving Abel here in 2015), and little details like that make a video like this seem less cookie cutter and more personal, so kudos! The other video comes from the show proper, as a Savoy staffer(?) filmed who I believe to be opening local hard rock band The Nameless, specifically the (vocal-devoid) last 20 seconds of their third-to-last song. The video quality isn't great, with the filmer panning around quickly to show the packed house more than the band, not to mention the vertical camera angle, so we never see enough of the band with any clarity. If you told me I was wrong and that this was Tarnished, I wouldn't be shocked!
In any event, I don't know off hand what song this is based on the instrumental snippet on offer (The Nameless were covers-centric upon their debut last year, and if this was Tarnished, it doesn't match any of their or Alex's studio originals). For what little we hear, it sounds good, and the solid audience at this early stage is encouraging, so give it a look below, and we'll let you know if more videos turn up!
The rest of today's post is devoted to the Pop Evil-headlined concert at The Dreammakers Theatre at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino on March 17th, as the ever-prolific Christopher Paci's YouTube channel has us covered with videos of all three bands from last week! As far as I have seen so far, Chris is the only person to upload videos from this show on YouTube, at least publically. Yes, I am aware that he filmed videos at the Leash show in Sault Ontario earlier this month, check back for those next week. As for the Pop Evil concert, Chris uploaded 12 videos from that night, including seven of the Muskegon hard rock mainstays' headlining set, those being "Breathe Again", "Torn To Pieces", "Footsteps", "Skeletons", "Dead Reckoning", "Paranoid (Crash & Burn)", and as embedded below, "Eye Of The Storm". The audio quality on his camera/this sound setup is fairly raw, but Chris had a strong central angle of the stage!
You can tell that Pop Evil are very much on their game here with good energy, and if soundboard audio existed, I can tell that it'd be fairly similar to the studio tracks, so fans of Pop Evil's ample rock radio hits should be right at home with these videos above & below!
Phoenix metalcore band The Word Alive were filmed thrice for Chris' channel, including their original songs "Trapped", "Why Am I Like This", and as embedded below, "Nocturnal Future". The same audio quality harshness aside, The Word Alive are well captured here with a nice melodic flavour on their modern aggression, and the stage lighting for their set is accentuated nicely, so check it out below!
Finally, Seattle metalcore band Avoid got two videos from Chris, namely "Song About James" and, as embedded below, their opening two songs "Gator Fest" and "Cowabunga". Avoid's electronic-tinged attack helped get this show off on the right foot with some explosively energetic songs to boot, and I can see how them opening was the best call, so check out their videos above & below, and stay tuned for Chris' Leash videos next week!

Irish eyes are definitely smiling upon the calendar this year, as with St. Patrick's Day falling on a Friday this year, it means the concert calendar is quite stacked, so be sure to check out your favourite nightclubs' and venues' online pages & schedules to see if bands are playing, let alone if they will have St. Patrick's Day themes. However, the weather gods are not smiling upon the Sault Ste. Marie area, with a winter storm watch currently in effect from late tonight through Saturday morning, with up to 3-8 inches of snow expected, so if you are at all concerned that a band or St. Patrick's Day party will be impaired by the impending storm, keep tabs on their online accounts for further details, as things can easily change.
Due to the amount of scheduled hard rock/punk concerts this weekend, I'll save the Bone Yard, Scarkazm, and Tym Morrison shows for tomorrow morning's post, and maybe anything that falls into our lap beforehand. Now, let's start with three Friday-only shows, including the big one this weekend, as Muskegon, Michigan hard rock mainstays Pop Evil will make their long awaited return to the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino TOMORROW NIGHT when they headline at The Dreammakers Theatre! This will be Pop Evil's seventh local concert, sixth at the Soo Kewadin, first since their outdoor gig with Buckcherry back in August 2019, and their first here with touring bassist Joey Walser in place of Matt DiRito. Of course, Pop Evil have loads of familiar rock radio hits, including "Breathe Again", "Eye Of The Storm", and "Survivor" since their last local date alone, so fans should be in good hands tomorrow!
Support bands include Phoenix metalcore band The Word Alive and Seattle metalcore quintet Avoid, and while both are more aggressive than Pop Evil by rule, their fast rising takes on the subgenre shouldn't be avoided tomorrow night! A presentation of Allstar Promotions, this 8:00 PM & all ages concert is actually a big deal on a wider scale for Pop Evil's sake, as it is both the full kickoff show for this tour, as well as the day that their new album "Skeletons" is released, so get your copy while it is hot off the presses! Tickets run for $29.50 USD (up from $25 at their last Dreammakers Theatre show in 2018), and limited seats in the left and right sections are still available, albeit in the back three rows only. Pop Evil have been very good to Sault Ste. Marie in the past decade+, and with their upbeat, high energy brand of modern hard rock still going high on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts, they should be in fine form with a huge crowd to match tomorrow night! Next up, local blues/hard rock quartet Project 906 will return to The Islander Bar in nearby Hessel TOMORROW NIGHT! Their first trip to The Islander Bar (almost an hour south of the Soo) since Halloween weekend, tomorrow's festivities will definitely be St. Patrick's Day-themed, including a traditional corned beef/boiled cabbage dinner if you are so inclined beforehand, plus multiple Irish-themed drink specials. Project 906 themselves will bring the rock as usual, and they should deliver entertaining hard rock covers and select originals for Mackinac County fans tomorrow!This is a one-nighter due to or resulting in Gary Hatch's show there on Saturday, and be advised that The Islander Bar will actually close for nearly a month starting on Sunday (the venue didn't say why, but renovations seem likely)
Tomorrow's concert has a 8:00 PM start time, no cover charge, and a 21+ age limit. Between this show and Scarkazm in the Soo (more tomorrow), hard rock fans in the eastern U.P. will have some solid options for St. Patrick's Day, so don't miss out, and for a preview of Project 906's Hessel gig tomorrow, here they are live a few months back!
Lastly for this preview post, we'll head north to Sault Ontario, where debuting local skate punk trio Hails and folk punk/extreme metal solo musician Chase Wigmore will join forces for a special concert/art exhibition TOMORROW at The Art Hub at Spring! Named the "Full Circle Rock & Roll Spectacular", this event is being held at the former Big Brothers Association property at 504 Queen Street East, and it is being held as part of the Fishbowl Festival and, within that, Hails frontman Brenton Ellis' own art exhibition named Full Circle, which celebrates "connectivity & continuity". Remember, if you've seen any of Brent's recent concerts or him at events where sale of his artwork occurred, you'll know his painting talents and this should be a good showcase for his visual art endeavours! Hails feature Brent alongside Vanity First's Mikhal Muto & Keeghan McAllister (yes, Vanity First is still active) and shouldn't be far off musically.
As for Chase, this will be a rare pandemic-era live concert set from him, but will this lean more to his recent metal studio work or his past unplugged folk punk live sets? Come out tomorrow to find out! This all ages event has a 7:30 PM start time, and admission is $10 or "pay what you can", and if you are so inclined, tickets are available at this link. Let's dive into this weekend's hard rock concert previews today, and while this is somewhat of a quiet weekend for heavier gigs (possible late notice shows acknowledged), we're leading off with a huge LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for the spring, so here's what you should know!
Muskegon hard rock band Pop Evil will return to The Dreammakers Theatre at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino for their seventh local concert appearance and first post-pandemic on Friday, March 17th! Last seen when they & Buckcherry headlined a special outdoor gig at the local Kewadin branch in August 2019 (and, for shows at The Dreammakers Theatre, in February 2018), it will be great to welcome these modern hard rock mainstays back to the E.U.P., especially as they're still performing quite well on rock radio! Since we last saw them, "Breathe Again", "Survivor", and "Eye of the Storm" have reached #1 or #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts, so look for another high octane set of melodic and hard hitting original favourites in three months! This will also be Pop Evil's first local show since bassist Matt DiRito left the band, with Joey Walser currently handling bass as a touring performer.
Opening bands will include two metalcore quintets, namely Phoenix's The Word Alive and Seattle's Avoid, and with the former's techno-influenced sound and the latter's rawer, more abrasive attack, both should set the tone nicely! Their sister band Peril will wrap up the year in St. Ignace on New Year's weekend, but this is the 2022 last call for Scarkazm in our area. If you want to enjoy Dave, Adam, and Jeff's hard rocking and classic tinged originals & covers, you know where to be tomorrow and/or Saturday! As usual for Scarkazm's Kewadin gigs, expect this weekend's shows to be 9:00 PM affairs with 21+ age limits and no cover charges. Now let's head north to Sault Ontario to round out the weekend concert previews (barring any late notice gigs), starting with local southern hard rock cover trio Bone Yard's return to Jay's Piston Broke Pub for shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! These are the final dates in Bone Yard's six weekend run of steady local gigs, and will mark Greg, Alex, and Warren's first shows at 306 Korah Road since Reggie's West changed names & owners in October, so if you want to see how Bone Yard do in a somewhat new locale, head to the former Rosie this weekend! In fact, these shows will be Bone Yard's last of 2022 before they "go into hiding for a few weeks", if you believe the Facebook event page, so there's extra reason to get out and enjoy their southern fried classic & hard rock covers! Finally, fellow local southern hard rock band Fort Creek will return to Soo Blaster on SATURDAY NIGHT when they headline a special one-night-only holiday concert that they're calling their "Christmas blowout"! Much like their May 7th date at the same Queen Street East venue, this will be a bigger event in scope than just your usual weekend nightclub gig, including a Christmas Cheer element to the proceedings that may make up for Fort Creek not playing at Toystock last month, including food donations accepted at the door for this show's expected merchandise giveaway contest, and Santa Claus himself will reportedly show up too! Beyond that, 705Live Sound Co. will be on hand to make things sound great, and their established hard rock and metal covers, plus burgeoning originals, should be enough of a draw on their own! No opening acts are advertised for this 8:00 PM event, which is for ages 19+ as you'd expect.
Proving the larger scope of this one, "minimal" advance tickets are still available for $10 (higher than in May) at Soo Blaster, Sessions Cannabis at 216 Second Line West, through band members, and in a later confirmation, Stone's Office Supply at 529 Queen Street East. This will be the biggest event yet for Fort Creek's new lineup, so hopefully Bill and his new bandmates leave a great first impression with fans on Saturday! After a one week lull following Rotaryfest, we have an unusually busy concert weekend at the SMS to kick off August, so here's what we have in store. Due to a number of LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (some on SHORT NOTICE) from the same local band, we'll focus only on them to start, while we'll look at Tym Morrison, The Wyld Stallyns, and Pop Evil later today, before looking at Saturday's Inner City Surfers, Highway 63, and Black Crown Initiate concerts tomorrow. Hopefully that covers everything, barring more late notice announcements. Now, here's what you should know to start this weekend!
New Sault Michigan hard rock band Tarnished will continue their "every Thursday" run of acoustic matinee concerts TODAY at Biggby Coffee, but that's not all for Alex and Josh (and Tommy?) this month! Joining their increasingly busy concert schedule, the Banned successors will also play outside of Phat Boutique at 559 Ashmun Street for a second straight week as part of the ongoing Ashmun Alive festival series TONIGHT, while they'll also be playing another acoustic set TOMORROW AFTERNOON as part of this year's Sidewalk Sales! Apologies for the short notice on the latter two gigs, they were only publically confirmed via Facebook event pages linked here and here earlier this week. All three of these two man unplugged gigs are FREE and ALL AGES matinees, so whether you're up for some 10:30 AM indoor jams for tips and coffee today, or you want to head downtown TONIGHT at 6:00 PM or TOMORROW at 12:00 PM, you have ample opportunities to hear Alex & Josh break out some fan favourite covers this weekend!
Note that I don't know where exactly Tarnished will be playing during Sidewalk Sales, but Phat Boutique again would make sense. That all said, Tarnished will also have one non-Biggby/Ashmun show this month in the region, as they will (more or less) take Banned's place at this year's Sugar Island Music Festival on Saturday, August 10th! Advertised without the "acoustic" tag in it's Facebook event page's title (and thusly implying that they'll have electric instruments and drums here), this will be frontman Alex Traynor's ninth straight year at this annual festival, and first not fronting Banned, though Tarnished get a high co-headlining slot at 8:45 PM on Saturday. Other bands this year, again of the festival regular, country/folk, and online page-less variety, will include headliners 3 Zip, 3½
Men, Aberdeen, 2 Cents, All Arms, Joel Choate, The Gentleman George Band, Walkers Rye, Moose River and February Sky, and an Al Gross-hosted open mic block opening at 11:00 AM.
With the exception of Friday openers Steph & Dave and Sunday headliners Jim & Joe Schutz, every band on those days is also playing on Saturday, unlisted "friends" aside, and Tarnished are only advertised for Saturday. As usual, admission for this ALL AGES outdoor festival on Sugar Island is via a $10 souvenir button purchase (kids 12 and under are FREE), which gets you admission for all three days of the festival, with no single day passes available. Buttons are on sale at Ed's Bayview Store, The Hilltop Bar & Grill, or the Westshore Convenience Store in Sugar Island, and at Crooked Music in Sault Ste. Marie, and presumably at the gate, and for more details (including on all of the non-musical festivities), visit the official website! Also for Tarnished's busy concert slate, they just played out of our coverage area today in Curtis, they'll take a road trip to Alex's current(?) Mount Pleasant home base for a show on August 15th, and will also travel to Gould City and Toledo, Ohio for gigs next month, so keep those in mind if you live afar!
Lastly, Alex Traynor's previously advertised solo concert at The Signatures Lounge at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino on September 5th, and Banned's previously announced Kinross Speedpark gig on September 6th have both turned into Tarnished concerts, as per their new Facebook event pages linked here & here, so both are now credited in our Sault Michigan concert listings as such. This seems to confirm that Tarnished have superceded Alex's own solo project in live priority, though hopefully he doesn't completely put his original music on the shelf. I think that covers all of Tarnished's new concert updates, and it's great to see Alex & Josh (and Tommy) staying busy! No word on how long this will last, especially if Alex has any impending Mount Pleasant commitments, but enjoy Tarnished while you can at all of these gigs, including TODAY & TOMORROW! This weekend's concert previews didn't seem like they'd be too eventful, but after a new local band turned up with lots of LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, some on SHORT NOTICE, I'll have to drag this out into two posts. As such, I'll make this an all-Sault Michigan post and keep our Sault Ontario previews (namely Tym Morrison & Soundcheck) for a post either tonight or early tomorrow. Now, here's what you should know for hard rock this weekend in the E.U.P.!
New local classic/hard rock cover band Tarnished will return to Biggby Coffee
in Sault Michigan for a fourth straight week TODAY with another
acoustic matinee show for tips & coffee! Apologies for the short
notice, this "every Thursday" run of shows from ex-Banned frontman Alex Traynor and bandmate Josh Fair is still
new to us. As you may have noticed by the above link, Tarnished do indeed have an official Facebook page and are now in our active band links, so what should you know about them? Updates have only shown up there this week, but they are described as playing "a variety of classic/modern rock", and they are available for full band and acoustic sets. As such, they are only depicted on Facebook in their acoustic two man version, as seen at Biggby Coffee all month long on Thursdays, though when they debuted at the Kinross Speedpark, Project 906's Tommy Korcal was behind the drumkit. Given that Tarnished seem to be going all in with regional gigs, is this a sign that Alex has moved back to the Sault Ste. Marie area from Mount Pleasant full time?
If not, will he be able to juggle Tarnished and commitments there like he did with Banned in their last couple of years? We'll find out soon, one imagines. As for their concerts, they're pulling double duty again tomorrow, as Alex & Josh will be playing another special gig TONIGHT (apologies again for the short notice) as part of this year's third Ashmun Alive! festivals, with them playing outside of Phat Boutique at 559 Ashmun Street, just down the road from The Soo Theater. Expect lots of sales, vendors, and varied entertainment once again, and see above for details on that front! That is of course a FREE & ALL AGES event. As for their "every Thursday" run at Biggby Coffee, it makes sense to treat these like Tym Morrison's ongoing weekly matinee gigs in Sault Ontario, especially if Alex has moved back home long term, so we'll treat these a month at a time until/unless otherwise stated by Tarnished or the venue. As such, look for Alex & Josh there playing at Biggby Coffee for tips and coffee on August 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th also!
Also, Tarnished will take a road trip to Curtis (90 minutes west of Sault Ste. Marie) for a 6:00 PM matinee show next Wednesday, and while this is out of our 1 hour coverage range, it's great to see Tarnished picking up where Banned left off for travelling for certain gigs! TODAY'S and next month's likely Biggby Coffee gigs have very early 10:30 AM start times, and while there are no age limits or cover charges, tips are always encouraged here. Visit the Ashmun Alive! For a preview, we do have two new videos of Tarnished (in their unplugged, drummer-less form) to acknowledge, including this 26 second clip of Alex & Josh covering ZZ Top's "La Grange" at a private camping function in Sherman, which is 20 minutes northwest of Cadillac. This was filmed by attendee Abby Baker and shared on Alex's solo Facebook page, and it sounds good while it lasts!
Embedded below though is an interview and performance with Alex & Josh, which was conducted by Phat Boutique owner Tara Behlingkelgar outside of the store. In the video, the guys talk about how they formed Tarnished & what music they play, before plugging the Biggby Coffee series, and closing with a cover of Incubus' "Drive", then transitioning to Tara discussing news with the store proper. Aside from the implication that Alex & Josh will be seen at more Ashmun Alive! events (that series runs through August), there's nothing new to learn here, but the cover is well done with a strong melody! Finally, let's preview a pair of shows in the Eastern Upper Peninsula that had lots of advance notice, as Traverse City classic metal trio Peril will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! In an unusually quick turnaround for them, this will be Jeff, Adam, and Brooks' second concert weekend at this very Kewadin branch this month, so if you like Peril's old school cover action, and you missed out in St. Ignace three weeks ago, here's your second chance! For what it's worth, this concert calendar for Peril and their sister bands notes that Peril will not be seen anywhere in August, though given their 2/3rds identical lineup to Scarkazm, don't read into that too much. Before we get into today's post, we have an apology for a missed concert, as local funk/hard rock quartet The Elements played a special acoustic set at The Sault Theater Workshopthis past Friday as part of a fundraiser to help get the cast & crew of the live stage play Frozen (featuring frontman Rob Speers' wife Christina in a lead role) to the annual Quonta Drama Festival in Sudbury later this week. Though promoted publically in advance, Rob only confirmed The Elements' involvement in a personal Facebook posting on Wednesday that we regrettably missed. Our apologies, we'd have plugged it had we known, and good luck in Sudbury! Now, we have lots of assorted notes and new videos today, so here's what you should know! Remember how defunct local horror punk/metal band Frightlight released their only CD "It's A...Live!" in October 2010? Well, the whole thing is now on YouTube to stream for free! Bassist Mike Gingras (a.k.a. Eddie Fright) posted it on his YouTube channel in May of last year, and it compiles all 6 songs from the live EP, which was recorded at Coch's Corner that July and produced by Nick Jackson at Spacehouse Studios in England. Featuring their then-quartet lineup of Mike/Eddie alongside current Jack Spades frontman J.D. Pearce (or Johnny Pints), guitarist/current Redundant drummer Rick "Styles" White, and ex-Caveman Morrison drummer Jeff "Shrek Ogre" Richards, the EP features the songs "Fright Night", "Rust Angel" (a re-appropriated Fitswitch song), "She Screams", "Dead Town Anywhere", "They All Float", and "C.H.U.D." Frightlight's only album still holds up for fans of their horror punk hybrid, with crisp production and familiar fan favourites!
Also, Mike added some band logos and post-effects to give the songs some visual pop (though curiously, no photos of the band themselves.) Frightlight had a good 5 year run, so relive that by streaming "It's A...Live!" in full below, and apologies for the delay in getting this on the site!
Next up, prolific local drummer Glen Thomas (Mourning Wood, Flat Stanley, The Peace Vibe) posted two metal cover videos onto his YouTube channel last week! Presumably learning these songs for Mourning Wood concerts (though he didn't specifically confirm that), his new covers are of System of a Down's "Chop Suey" and, as embedded below, Metallica's "My Friend of Misery". Glen noted that both aren't perfect, which does show (especially on the S.O.A.D. cover), but it's nice to see him tackle some heavier songs than we tend to see from his solo performance postings, and he's having fun and tackling these with clear skill, so give them a look above & below!

Local death metal duo Brutally Fatal have released the cover art and track listing for their newest planned demo CD, and second with the current lineup, to their Facebook page last month! It will be called "Blood of the Devil", and will feature 18 songs, but due to potentially offensive artwork and song titles, we won't embed either here (though some song names include "Belly of the Beast", "Offensive Track", and "Luck of the Irish".) Good to hear they're still active, so see above for more info if you want!
We have moved local grindcore duo Das Skalpell Kampf to our inactive band links due to a year's inactivity, not having made a band-related posting on their Facebook page
since March 2nd of last year. The mysterious union of Fonzy and Chachi
Grozny notably appeared on Blood Shed Productons' 11-way split CD from
early last year, but that marked the former Scalpel Fight's only major
public activity. Hopefully they turn up again down the road, their songs
were solid for the genre!
Just as a clarification, we can now confirm the full identity of local modern hard rock quartet Eclipse's bassist, as new Facebook postings confirm that his full name is Fred Dunn. The Speak Easy Battle 3rd place finishers had previously credited him as just Fred or Freddy, though either way, I can't find finite info on any past band work. Prolific local rock/punk bassist James White (Redundant, The Elements, Nikkfitt) is looking for drummers willing to jam with a musical project of his, and to private message him for further details. No word on if this relates to a replacement in one of his active bands, or something new entirely, but message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from March 4th for more info!
We have also moved local post-punk/rockabilly duo Orange to our inactive band links due to a year's inactivity, as they haven't posted a public update since a status on their Facebook page on March 9th of last year. The revived project from Telephone & Address' Chris Shoust had planned to release a split album with his other band The Red & Black last year, but aside from song postings on Soundcloud, the band didn't unveil a lot publically otherwise. Chris is talented, and hopefully he and Matt bring Orange back again in the future!
Would you be interested in seeing an all ages Random Killing concert in the Soo this summer? Frontman/Saultite Andrew Kiteley (Dutch Angus on Facebook) was weighing interest in the idea on this local concert Facebook group on Monday, and while there have been affirmative replies since, weigh in above if you want the Toronto hardcore punk veterans to roll back north for another Hardcore Homecoming this summer!
