LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The Pixo Control & Ten Kings), A New Album, And Gonqshow Updates!!

Let's touch on some recent big news items on the site today, including updates to an ongoing concert series, a surprise new album release, and LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS! If you're wondering, our River Jacks concert preview is coming in our next post. Now, here's what you need to know!

New Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Ten Kings will play outside of the Kewadin Casino umbrella for the first time next month when they rock The Savoy Bar & Nightclub on Friday, June 5th & Saturday, June 6th! It's great to see this regional supergroup expanding their territory to take some different stages, so whether you haven't seen Ten Kings live yet, or you're familiar with them from their Kewadin gigs, you might want to write these dates down! Just for reference, remember that The Savoy has hosted outdoor gigs under their old Summerfest umbrella in the past, but nothing indicating that is on the band's own Facebook event page. Both shows have 10:00 PM start times, neither has an announced cover charge, and you must be 21 to attend either. For more details, check the above links, and stay tuned for more from Ten Kings!

Next up, Sault Ontario hard rock/alternative trio The Pixo Control will headline a huge fundraising concert on Friday, June 12th at The Rankin Arena! The self-promoted event is intended to raise funds for the band to produce a quality North American tour this summer and full release of their upcoming debut CD, and to that end, the show will feature free pizza, games, prizes, and a cash bar as added incentives to take the drive out to The Rankin Arena for this event. You don't see a whole lot of fundraisers of this scale from local hard rock bands (Garden of Bedlam and Stillbroke had notable ones during their heyday), but if this can put a dent into what it takes to get their CD and tour rolling, then all will work out! Opening will be new local rock band Caroline Divine (featuring ex-Frasiers members) in their second announced concert, but what exactly do they play? Attendees can find out then, or at The Algonquin on June 5th!

Entitled "Pixo Plays For Food" and sponsored by Case's Music & The Rad Zone, tickets are available for $15 at both locations and via Pixo Control members. The event will take place on June 12th at 8:00 PM, though it is sadly a 19+ event. For more details, visit the above links! Adding to a surprisingly busy concert weekend at this Batchewana Street arena (joining The Danger Cats' roller derby sets the next day), hopefully this is a huge success for Michael, Steve, and Keeghan, so stay tuned as more info rolls in!

Also today, here's some info on a surprise album release, as Dafter, Michigan solo hard rock artist SweetKenny (real name Ken Sutton) quietly released his 12th solo album "Fleabag Hotel" on his Bandcamp page a few days ago! Honestly, a new mid-year release was likely given his usual schedule, but not as much was said about this one this time. Officially scheduled to recieve it's physical release on June 15th, the 11 song album is self-described by Ken as "a heavy rock, vocal, instrumental, high energy fun album", and it includes instrumentals and songs with vocals like usual. The album notably includes SweetKenny's Woodbangers Entertainment theme song "A New Dawn" among other new songs, some with amusing titles like "You Can Pet My Cat". Digital copies of "Fleabag Hotel" can be bought now at the above links for $12, but when can you expect a review on the site?

Not until July at the earliest, as we only reviewed last year's "Amazonian" in January, and we're still within our 6 month buffer period to avoid showing a bias or favoritism (Haggith's "Apocalypse" is coming in the next few weeks, and next month's review is to be determined.) Also, "Fleabag Hotel" is definitely next, as January's "Slobber" won't really be a "new" album anymore by the time SweetKenny's next review makes the site. Look for that then, and check out SweetKenny's albums above!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter items from the last while, all relating to upcoming Gongshow events at The Algonquin Pub! Our source for each is recent updates on the Facebook event page, and all are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Local doom metal trio AlgomA have been added as openers for the Wilt-headlined Gonqshow concert on Saturday, September 27th, though one more band is to be announced. I believe this will be AlgomA's debut at The Algonquin Pub, and their brutal sludge metal should be a good compliment, so keep this show in mind for the fall!
  • Toronto thrash trio AxMinister are no longer listed as headliners for the Gonqshow event on July 4th, again via recent event page updates. A reason for their exit hasn't been announced, but hopefully nothing bad happened! The show (also featuring Alberta punk quintet Calling All Captains and local rapper Mikey Thomas) is still on though, and a replacement band is to be announced, but will promoters stay with the varied genre theme? Stay tuned for more!
  • New local metal trio Faceityoureametalband (featuring RedD Monkey, Pillory, and Bear Hunters alumni) have been named as the final local openers for the Gatgas-headlined Gonqshow concert on June 27th! Good to hear that they're definitely not a one-off project, and they'll fit the show well, but we have yet to find an online page for them. We'll keep you posted when we hear more!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for some mid-week concert previews and more tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

Swampstravaganza V Concert Review!!

After a few days' delay due to lengthy video uploads and computer repairs, here's our review of Saturday night's fifth annual Swampstravaganza all ages concert event! Moving to The Canadian Nightclub this year after 4 years at The Oddfellows Hall, the event was well ran, but attendance was very uneven, peaking around the middle of the day's events and having a disappointingly low turnout for early and closing acts. There was a good amount at it's height though! The bar aside, there were no food sales or vendors beyond Haggith CDs, but there were plentiful flyers for the upcoming release party from DJ Seith & Conika (both Swampfest alums, click here for more details.) Now, here's what went down on Saturday!

Like last year, Swampstravaganza V opened with a 2 hour open mic block for any willing particpants to make use of, though sadly, the performer turnout dropped from 5 musicians to 4 this year. Opening the day was local solo singer/guitarist Jake Rydall (not to be confused with The Wild Iris' Jake Rendell), who played three original songs that got a good reception from early attendees! I've never seen him live before, but he has a good voice and songwriting ability, and you can check out more from him at this link! Apologies again for confusing him with James Watterworth originally too, I had a blonde moment. Jake also lent his guitar to the next two performers, with promoter Steve Mozarowski playing some acoustic songs during the open mic for a second straight year, and if you're familiar with Steve's softer original material, you'll have been right at home here! Strong work, but his vocals were sometimes muddled in the mix.

Patrick Evans played third, who you may remember from a brief set during the open mic block at last year's Soo Band Roulette, and he played a handful of acoustic country covers (including Darius Rucker's "Wagon Wheel") that were well done once again, but he was a little stiff on stage, and one could argue this wasn't the right crowd for country songs. The last performer was local pianist/busker Damjan Binda (a.k.a. Spider Fingerz), who also played during the Swampfest IV open mic, and his piano skill and natural ease when chatting between songs were clear as day! He and his keyboard (complete with wooden piano shell) make for good entertainment, and he transitioned that well to a turn on the guitar (former RedD Monkey drummer Kevin Overton's, he added) for a few vocal/guitar songs that were also well recieved! Steve also took a brief turn on Damjan's keyboard to close the night, showing us a side of him we don't see too much of!

Overall, the open mic block gave us four talented local musicians covering a wide array of sounds, from folk and punk to country and alt-classical, but if the open mic returns next year, I'd move it to around the middle of the schedule. I told Steve that if the open mic served as an intermission (i.e. from 8:00-10:00 PM), it would attract people who came later to come on stage, ensure that there's a larger crowd to stick around and see them, and provide an opportunity for a break if some fans need it before the bands return. Just an idea!

First of the 9 bands on Saturday was new local alternative hard rock duo Infinity Grinder in just their second concert appearance, so what else can we say about them after seeing them live? Well, guitarist Brad Griffith and drummer Terrence Gomes split lead vocal duty about 50/50 on their set, comprised of original songs like "A Few Weeks", "You & Me", and "Wherever You Go", with the guys even swapping instrument roles for a handful of songs mid-set. Sonically, Infinity Grinder still remind me more of Brad's past bands than Terrence's, particularly his defunct two man band Sounds From the Green Room, but that's not bad, as they have a solid aggressive sound with creative flourishes, and Brad has a good singing voice! Hopefully we hear much more from Infinity Grinder in the near future!

Second among scheduled bands was another duo, Blood Shed Productions death metal band Brutally Fatal in what may have been the debut for any of the label's acts at The Canadian, but being so early in the show, not a lot of people saw it. While far removed from Infinity Grinder in sound, they did share more in common beyond both being two-man-bands, as guitarist Austin McCrae and drummer Tyler Gibson both shared vocal duties and they too swapped instruments mid-set, giving C.T.W. fans a little something extra, including renditions of songs from that band like "Entrepreneur of Depression", plus Brutally Fatal songs like "Stomp Your Feet". Tyler has the frontman swagger and energy in spades, but Austin still seems too nervous and quiet up front, and at times, the songs did seem a little simple vocally, but it's nice to see Brutally Fatal keeping at it!

Next up was local hard rock/alternative quartet Haggith in the first set since the release of their "XIV" EP (oddly not on sale at the show) and with returning member Caleb Cachagee on guitar in place of Daniel Horton, which the guys made light of at the start by beginning without Caleb, then remembering that there should be a tall long haired guitarist with them. In terms of his guitar ability, he gets the job done so far, especially with knowing many older Haggith songs already, but lead guitar parts with solos tended to be handled by frontman Curtis McKenzie. Their set was a mixture of familiar older songs like "Leon the Janitor" & "Rage Train" with newer cuts like "Hands of Death", with some recently familiar songs absent, but it's yet to be announced if songs Daniel wrote are being de-emphasized. Everyone sounds good, and Jordan Leach is coming into his own and getting more comfortable on bass, so thumbs up so far for the new lineup!

Also, Haggith did release their newest full length CD "Apocalypse II" a day early at the show, but to give it proper emphasis, we will touch on that in an upcoming news post. Stay tuned for that!

Local death metal standouts The Bear Hunters came on next to continue their perfect streak of Swampstravaganza appearances (only Steve has joined them on the lineup each year), so kudos to for keeping this run going! Despite the relatively early set, the guys attracted the day's largest crowd for their brutal originals like "I Fear No God", "Deception", and "Neckbreaker", plus the fan-approved returns of their covers of "Squirrel Buddy" and "Guardians of Asgaard". If you've seen The Bear Hunters' recent quartet sets, they won't have disappointed, with Nik, Mitch, Justin, and Johnny on form musically but things did seem a little rushed, possibly due to Mitch & Johnny's show with Beaumont Avenue shortly afterwards. Strong work as usual from The Bear Hunters though, and here's hoping they're back for Swampfest VI!

The middle band on Saturday was local indie/punk quintet Northwest in their first live appearance since their CBC Searchlight contest run, and they entertained a still solid-sized crowd with their well recieved and well-written originals like "I Got You", "Young & Wild", and a handful of newer songs. Musically, you can't complain with their veteran talent and accessible punk sound, and Wayne Watkins' vocals were on point, but the guys didn't seem quite as energetic as they have at some prior events. (also, it's a little odd seeing Mike Smykacz playing with his back to the crowd so much.) Still, their songs do show why they made it so far in CBC Searchlight, and I'm very curious to hear what Northwest have up their sleeves for the coming months!

The next band was announced as "faceityoureametalband", which is the handle that promoter Steve Mozarowski used for last year's cancelled solo set, so was that what we got on Saturday? Nope, we instead got a full band under this name! Featuring Steve on vocals & guitar alongside Pillory alum Josh Amendola (in a Guy Fawkes mask) on bass, and Bear Hunters alum Mike Vincent on drums, Steve indicated that the band formed only on the prior Sunday, and that this might be a one off performance. Sounding basically like RedD Monkey with bass rather than a cello (or like a heavier Smeltzer), faceityoureametalband played originals like "Landfiller" and "Oubliette" that sounded good and chaotic to go with Steve's prior frontman work, and Josh was a firecracker full of energy! It'd be interesting to see this project continue, and if it does, we'll let you know!

Seventh on the bill were the returning Skeyes of Seven, as the local hard rock band made their first live concert appearance in two years and their first with their current quartet lineup, so how'd they sound after such a long hiatus? Not bad at all, they hardly looked like they had any rust! Playing songs like "I Am", "Under The Rug", and "Fallen Faith", plus a cover of Tool's "Schism", they handled each well, with Cory Murchison's vocal range on full display and the now-bald Ron Baxter solid on all guitar parts, while Alain Fletcher acclimates well on bass in the new lineup, and longtime As It Stands drummer John Mignacca is more than welcomed back behind the kit! Whether you're familiar with members' past work with bands like Sense of Truth or not, Skeyes of Seven's modern hard rock made a solid impression, and look for them back on stage next month, with details to come on the SMS!

Co-headlining was the original crash band, Sykotyk Rampage, in their first concert of the year, and their fun improvised alt-rock was definitely welcomed back to the stage by late attendees! Playing an all original set featuring songs like "Sweet Young Thing", "Old No. 7", "Hay Zeus", and the debuting "Suffering Child" (they titled it, not me!), Sykotyk Rampage kept the fun drinking song vibe going for their set, with Paul Becker's forceful lead vocals back in full swing, guitarists Dirk Becker & Shane Kokis laying down fun and solid riffs, and the now-bald Tony Briglio still channeling Lemmy nicely with his presence and ability! Though George was surprisingly stuck in the corner, it was nice to see Sykotyk Rampage's raucous originals back on stage after too long, and here's hoping they're back before you know it!

After brief confusion on if they were there, VM Radio Battle winners Gnaeus returned to the site of that event as the headliners on Saturday, and despite the low remaining crowd turnout, they jammed out a fun and well recieved set that eschewed formality for just having a good time! Along with established songs of theirs like "Crave", the guys took crowd requests, played some extended jams, and just made the most of the moment. Aaron Alessandri's vocals sounded as good as they ever have though, and he and Brad Irwin handled the guitar (and synth) well throughout their set (plus, I liked Brendan's hat!) That said, I was hoping people would stick around for Gnaeus, whose profile is growing fast, and they deserved a better crowd, but I know they made a solid impression on everyone still there on Saturday!

Overall, Swampstravaganza V was a good time, if long, but every band delivered in their own way, as did the open mic performers, and hopefully we see a similar quality from next year's event! Kudos to Steve for another great show, Dirk for solid sound throughout the day, and every performer for a great time, and here's to Swampfest 6! I did get photos of each band (and open mic performer), so check everything out at this link or at our Facebook page! And apologies for the quality on them, I can't do much about the reflective paint on the road signs on the stage's back wall.

As for videos, we have 10, so here's (in performance order) Jake, Steve, Patrick, and Damjan during the open mic block, Infinity Grinder playing "Modern World", Brutally Fatal playing "Table For One" & "Irregular", Haggith playing "Livin' It On The Run", The Bear Hunters playing their new song "The Dying Den", Northwest playing "Stars Don't Fall", Faceityoureametalband covering Motorhead's "Ace of Spades", Skeyes of Seven playing their newest song "See The Truth", Sykotyk Rampage playing "Warhorn", and Gnaeus playing "Crave" and an untitled instrumental jam, and again, see the above links for the large copies of each video! That is all for today, but stay tuned for more news and weekend concert previews in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

Skynet/Chronobot Concert Preview, Swampstravaganza Lineup Updates, And More!!

In quite possibly our last news post before TOMORROW'S Anvil concert at The Canadian, we have our last of the weekend's metal/hard rock concert previews (barring something on late notice), big lineup updates for an upcoming all ages show, and some new videos related to a (possibly still alive?) hard rock act, so here's what you need to know!

On Sunday night, an interesting lineup of metal and punk bands will hit 180 Projects for that Gore Street venue's first metal show of the new year, including the long awaited local debut of Hamilton progressive metal quartet Skynet as the headliners! Featuring alumni of Straight Reads The Line, you may remember Skynet from briefly being scheduled to headline at The Locals Attack in November 2012, but now they're finally going to devastate the local stage with their groove & djent influenced originals, so you won't wanna miss them! Joining them are Saskatchewan stoner/doom metal quartet Chronobot, who have a space-influenced vibe that will definitely help them stand out among the other bands tomorrow, and of course, doom metal fans should be right at home too! The local openers include local sludge/doom metal trio AlgomA in their first show of the new year, and while they haven't played live in 7 months, they've hardly been idle due to the recording of their "Reclaimed By The Forest" EP, so might we hear some new material from them on Sunday night?

Local punk trio The Northern Tragedy will open this show in their second 180 Projects appearance, and while they're the only non-metal band on the bill, their entertaining originals should gain a solid audience all the same! Promoted by Jamie Vincent & Oh! Right Arm! Promotions in their first collective show of the year, Sunday night's ALL AGES show has a $5 cover charge, and a 7:00 PM start time. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! I like the diverse lineup of bands, and there should be a lot of heavy action going down on Sunday, so don't miss out! I hope I can go, but we'll have to see how busy I am that night. For a preview, here's Skynet's music video for their song "Deception"!

Next up, three more acts have been announced for this year's fourth Sewer Swampstravaganza on May 3rd at The Oddfellows Hall, though considering the combined lineup of one, it's almost four! One is local funk/metal trio The Strange Coyotes, in what will be the second straight Swampstravaganza appearance for bassist James Watterworth, but it remains to be seen how their drummer situation will look by then. For reference sake, their Facebook page has not made any drummer announcements yet, but their predecessor band Project Legion operated solely with temporary fill-ins, and the surviving members play solo often without the need for a drummer. Speaking of which, their former drummer Mike Haggith is also slated to perform this year in what's currently being advertised as a solo set (perhaps his first of this kind since his Outback gigs early in his local residence.) Mike did say on the Facebook event page that it could be expanded to a set by his acid jam band Mike Haggith & The Din, but he did admit that he'd like to showcase his original material live, so we'll have to see what happens in his own second Swampstravaganza!

The other new band is actually credited as a joint set, as remember local/Grand Rapids folk/acoustic trio Ye Olde Mold Pickers from the second Swampstravaganza in 2012? Well, they're reuniting for at least one night on May 3rd in a combined set with their successors, Grand Rapids ragtime/blues trio The Filthy Cur, whose lineup is almost the same (just swap out Rihkee Strap for Mickey MacKenzie.) It remains to be seen if the two bands will merge for a full set, or if each individual band will play short mini-sets, but Ye Olde Mold Pickers had a unique sound that will be interesting to see back on the local stage, if only for a day! If they do play a combined full set, would Ye Olde Filthy Curs be a fitting name? Finally, the advertised solo set from promoter/RedD Monkey frontman Steve Mozarowski under the "faceityoureametalband" handle has been removed from the event page's lineup for unannounced reasons, though Steve did say that his performing involvement was not final.

Disappointing, but kudos to him for bringing the Swampstravaganza back this year! This year's Swampstravaganza lineup now has 7 confirmed acts, and I would assume at least 2 or 3 more are forthcoming, so stay tuned for updates at this link and here at the SMS!

Finally for today, here's some new videos from Brutaly Fatal frontman Austin McCrae! Uploaded to their label Blood Shed Productions' YouTube channel on Wednesday, these join YouTube re-posts of two recent Facebook videos that Austin was featured in, and they're covers of Weezer's "Pork & Beans" and (as embedded below) Marcy Playground's "Sex & Candy"! Now, neither are metal songs, but I mention them here because they are both credited setlist songs of Austin and Tyler Gibson's punk/grunge band Re-Born, which morphed from the original Brutaly Fatal last month before they resurrected that band. I still don't know whether Re-Born are still operating independently or not, but either way, these are samples of what we can/could expect from that project. They do show Austin's development as a musician, and he can carry a tune, but the lack of a guitar here is noticeable, and will be more so live for this style. Check out his Marcy Playground cover below, and stay tuned in case we hear any updates on Re-Born's active status!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news soon, and I'll see you guys at The Canadian for Anvil! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Swampstravaganza & Griphook) And A New Essar Centre Concert Video!!

After a stretch of uncertainty for the weekend's heavier concert schedule, we've received a good amount in the last few days (albeit with minimal notice), and that includes a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for TONIGHT! That leads off today's post, but stay tuned afterwards for another new show announcement (as bands are now confirmed for it) and a new video from a major concert almost 7 years ago! Read on below to get caught up!

Local hard rock cover quartet Griphook will be rocking The Rockstar Bar TONIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band just announced this show yesterday. Last seen at this venue over seven months ago, this will be their first Rockstar Bar appearance with new frontman Joel Syrette, so if you've missed their diverse and often heavy covers earlier this year at The Rosie, be downtown for this one TONIGHT! Note that this is a one-nighter due to the previously announced That's Chester show tomorrow night, and it does take the place of the briefly advertised Late & Loud show that was either incorrect or very premature. Admission should be around $5 tonight, you must be 19 to attend, and there is a 10:30 PM start time in effect. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Despite the short notice, I imagine Griphook's new lineup should entertain in their return to The Algonquin Hotel tonight, so keep it in mind for your weekend concert plans, and for a preview, here's Griphook covering AC/DC in 2012!

Next up, the first bands have been named for this year's fourth annual Sewer Swampstravaganza at The Oddfellows Hall on May 3rd! Yes, the name has reverted back from the previously announced Swampfest, as per the Facebook event page. Possibly most surprising in terms of the lineup is that local/Toronto hardcore punk trio RedD Monkey will not be playing this year, as they're apparently on "an indefinite hiatus", as per frontman/promoter Steve Mozarowski on the event page linked above. He didn't give a public reason for the hiatus through there, but RedD Monkey's Facebook page has not been updated this year, and their scheduled set at the Tim Day show at The Algonquin in December was retracted into a solo acoustic set from Steve, which may have been related. This breaks their streak of playing each year's Swampstravaganza, but Steve is tentatively listed as playing a solo set this year, albeit oddly credited as "faceityoureametalband" with no spaces. Hopefully he does play to keep at least one tie to past installments (especially if The Bear Hunters don't play), but we'll keep you guys posted!

Steve's possible solo set aside, two bands are now confirmed, including local alternative hard rock/blues quartet Sykotyk Rampage in their first announced show of 2014! I believe this will be their first Oddfellows Hall appearance since last year's Swampstravaganza, making them just one of four bands to play the event more than once (joining RedD Monkey, The Bear Hunters, and Winkstinger), and their creative crash music should fit in nicely after a four month break, so don't miss them! Also advertised is Sudbury hard rock trio Aggressive Acoustic (fronted by ex-Sykotyk Rampage bassist Brian Cattapan) in their second local stop and first since the Zombie Walk afterparty in October, and it should be awesome to see Brian back in town with his current band, so check them out above! The search is on to fill out the lineup (presumably to get it to around 10 acts again), and while Steve is looking for younger performers, message the event page above if your band is interested in playing this year's event on May 3rd!

This ALL AGES marathon concert event goes down on May 3rd at 2:00 PM with a $5 entry fee, and schedule details will come out when the lineup is complete. Check the above links for more details! Despite RedD Monkey's hiatus (hopefully it isn't permanent, they're too good!), this concert should be as varied and entertaining as it has been since 2011, so stay tuned for updates as they roll in, and if you or your band wants to play, click here to show your interest!

Finally for today, here's a surprise new video posting from one of the first major metal shows at The Essar Centre, that being Heaven & Hell's headlining concert from March 20th, 2007! Remember, they were the supergroup made up of Black Sabbath's early 1980s/1990s lineup. Courtesy of Wawa author Duane Roy's YouTube channel on Wednesday, he filmed this video at the then-Steelback Centre during the first few songs of their set, starting during their set-opener "After All (The Dead)", before continuing with "The Mob Rules", and closing with "Children of the Sea", so click each link to hear each specific song! Filmed at a far angle on the left of the arena, the video is fairly blurry, and heads do get in the way at times, but it's great to see a new video from this show! On a musical basis, this was my absolute favourite concert to take place at the Essar Centre since it opened (seeing Megadeth live didn't hurt either), and kudos to Duane for uploading this finally, so check it out below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes shortly, including perhaps a movie review or two? Thanks everyone!
