Insurrection/Beguiler Concert Video Showcase!!

Before we begin, I wanted to briefly thank everyone for the condolences and messages over the passing of my good friend and ex-girlfriend Victoria Childs last week. We actually met at punk concerts at The Oddfellows Hall in 2005 (she sure had stories to tell from those), and while life took us down different paths in 2008, we reconnected in the early 2020s, and eventually dated from last fall until this summer. Victoria didn't live an easy life, but she was a kind, funny, and generous person who was always supportive of the local music scene and concerts, let alone my work on the SMS, and I loved & will miss her very much. Enjoy live music, nature, and an iced capp in her memory, and please take care of your mental health. R.I.P. Tori, you were loved!

Today's post takes us to videos from the metal concert at Soo Blaster toplined by two touring metal bands on July 30th, as shot by prolific local concert filmer Christopher Paci for his YouTube channel! These were only uploaded there last month, so we were both late to get these covered, but I'd rather look at them late than not at all! Based on the upload order, it looks like everything was really flipped around aside from local crossover thrash quartet Hails opening the show, so let's start there, as he filmed one video from their set. In it, he filmed Brent, the Mutos, and Keegan playing most of "The Lost Cosmonaut", the opening song from their new self-titled album (to be reviewed here next month). I'll hold comment on the song itself given that, but it's a ripping performance for the early crowd, and while it is unfortunate that Chris missed the first 30 seconds, Ha!ls fans will want to check out this speedy performance below! Stay tuned for more from them!

From here, the show's lineup order really seemed to shift, as announced headliners Insurrection were performing in the next two uploaded videos. The Gatineau, Quebec death metal quartet were filmed twice for Chris' channel, where you can see them playing "The Gathering", and as embedded below, two songs, namely "System Failure" & "Failures Of The Flesh". Nice and brutal sound with clear and enunciated death growling (my favourite kind), Insurrection got the mosh pit opened up well here, and Stéphane Jomphe had good command of the crowd on or off the stage, so give Chris' videos from their set a watch above and below!

The penultimate band slot on July 30th ended up going to late additions Begulier, the Toronto deathcore quartet who were finally making their local debut over a year after the cancellation of Crucifest in Leeburn. They were filmed at Soo Blaster playing their songs "Plague Ridden Rats" and, as embedded below, a longer song that I had trouble identifying. Deathcore fans will take to the down and grimy but ferocious display on these videos, which fans definitely got a strong kick out of, and it was great to see Beguiler finally playing in the Soo area, so check these out above & below as well!

Finally, the closing band ended up being local death/thrash metal trio Pillory in their first announced gig with former Crimson Crusade frontman Devon Lucier on bass in over a decade. Chris actually filmed three videos from their set, and two are of original songs, namely "Specimen Of Egotism" and "The Passing". In cases like this, I'd usually share an original here first, but in this case, I wanted to highlight the other video, which sees Pillory covering Black Sabbath's "Into The Void" as a tribute to the late great Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away eight days previously. Robert doesn't sing here, but it's a solid cover that Sabbath and Ozzy fans will get a kick out of! The two originals show modern day Pillory at their brutal best, with Bret's technical drumming on point, and while there wasn't much public media from Devon's 2014 stint with Pillory to compare, he fits well here! Check out these videos above and below, and look for more from Pillory soon!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site soon! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? September 2024 Update

It's now time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! After a slight delay for our first monthly feature post of the fall of 2025, it's now live, and we're again taking a look at the current release whereabouts and latest public updates from local metal, hard rock, and punk bands who have signalled the beginning of recording sessions for new albums. No new additions or removals this month, but two entries have updates, as noted with their titles in italics. So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bone Yard 225's debut album

Rumoured Songs: "F.A.F.O.", "Gypsy Spell", "Fuck!"

Background: After months of teasers that they were planning to record original music (as previewed in their live concerts prior), local southern hard rock cover trio Bone Yard 225 began releasing their own songs on major streaming services in July 2024, a whopping fifteen years after the pre-225 band debuted as a country cover quartet. Their first three singles (all recorded at their home studio) were posted online by January, though it took until May 2025 for the band to confirm on their Facebook page that they were indeed working on a proper album. It's not immediately clear if their existing three singles will be included, but it's not a given, as Jonesy Land fans saw with "Zoom-Out". As of August 11th, it was reportedly "album tracking time", while this video from three days later purports to show bandmates Alex D'Ettore and Warren Reville recording backing vocals (which may or may not be for a cover of Mike Posner's "I Took A Pill In Ibiza".)

Current Release Status: In that Facebook post from May 30th, your local 225 said that "the album is coming along nicely", and they hoped to release it "by the end of 2025". Assuming no delay, that's a six month window, and while singer/drummer Greg Simpson did release an EP with his old band Stiffler's Mom, it's hard to compare the release methods and schedule given that "The Demo" came out in 2004.  It is neat to see that Greg, Alex, and Warren are going all in on a studio album, and stay tuned for updates as they roll in!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bullet Train's upcoming EPs

Rumoured Songs: "Atmosphere", "Illusions", "Profit", "Wayside"

Background: The current hard rock band from former Sense of Truth/Skeyes of Seven frontman Cory Murchsion and ex-Fort Creek bandmates Robin "Bones" Lee and Anthony Fabiano, Bullet Train have existed solely as a studio band so far, releasing four original songs recorded at their own home studio to their YouTube channel in 2024, all very much influenced by their take on current events. After a quiet summer due to "life's trials", Bullet Train resurfaced on their Facebook page last September to reveal that they were working on two demo EPs, with the first one entering post-production as of the 9th, though it's not clear if their 2024 singles will be on them.

Current Release Status: No idea yet, especially as this band has no prior track record for releasing albums, though all three band members have experience writing and recording studio material to varying degrees. Bullet Train claimed on September 9th that a release date for EP #1 would be announced "in the upcoming weeks", a timeline not realized as of this writing. It'll be interesting to see how fast things come along for Bullet Train, so keep tabs on their Facebook page for further updates!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chase James Wigmore - The Chaotic Rite

Rumoured Songs: "The Cities Alive & It's Angry"

Background: Ever the prolific artist & songwriter, local folk punk/extreme metal musician Chase Wigmore has been working on an extensive rock opera for years (once claimed to be a 33 part work), originally named "A Story About A Kid Named Todd". Worked on in between his other unrelated solo albums, released for sale or otherwise, Chase posted a lengthy elaboration of the rock opera in 2022, now titled "The Chaotic Rite", outlining its concept, recording plans, and long-term release timeline. Clips of songs have surfaced on his Facebook page, as have full songs not explicitly tied to the album, as well as the final artwork. In more recent promotion, Chase has hinted that "The Chaotic Rite" might be his final solo album as part of aims to focus on his personal life more than his prolific original material. Regardless, the final product has been pared down to 25-30 minutes.

Current Release Status: Chase elaborated on Facebook last summer that the album was 95% done earlier that year when the files "got trapped on my desktop's hard drive", and he had been unable to procure a backup of the material or recover the files as of that post. In any event, three of the full songs uploaded to Facebook in the previous year were clarified as not being planned for "The Chaotic Rite", but they could surface on a separate EP. Fingers crossed that Chase is able to save this album and put it out when able, especially given the years that he's put into the making of it!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Convergence - In Bloom

Rumoured Songs: "Gemini", "In Bloom", "Breaking News", "It Ate The F&$%ing Moon", "Kraken Mara", "You Are Not Flesh"

Background: Just over a month after releasing their sophomore EP "Dead And Dreaming", local progressive metal band Convergence announced in February 2024 that EP #3 would be named "Gemini", with its cover artwork being released at the same time. Teaser clips of most songs from the EP were posted on their Facebook page and their YouTube channel throughout much of 2024, but most prior media was wiped as they retooled as a full band, now including singer Stephen Gagnon-Ruscio and drummer David Peredun. Convergence have been working in studio recently with producer Dustin Goodall at Unsalted Audio, documenting the sessions in Facebook "Reels", and while they did get cagey about the endgame for the studio sessions, they have confirmed in concert that the EP (now named "In Bloom") is still in progress. Live versions of early instrumentals (now with vocals) have also been played in their early sets.

Current Release Status: No clue, and given the complexity of their music yet their independent studio trappings so far, that could bode a quick or lengthy timeline for "In Bloom" to come out, depending on what angle you take. Since their modern studio cycle commenced in 2023, things have been relatively steady for Brendan and Jake as a recording act, and here's hoping that Convergence keep that up for their third offering!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fort Creek's debut album

Rumoured Songs: "One For The Road", "Sweet Rosie"

Background: Background: Local southern/hard rock band Fort Creek have sporadically teased plans to record an EP since February 2020, but they wouldn't release any samples until almost two years later when they shared (now-deleted) clips of their original song "Hammer Down" on their Facebook page. The guys would play it regularly at concerts from 2022-2023, with studio sessions taking place in early-mid 2023 as well. After the departure of bassist Robin "Bones" Lee and drummer Anthony Fabiano (both now of Bullet Train) in the fall of 2023, Fort Creek opted to abandon material recorded with them "as a show of good faith", and have been working on new material and rebuilding their studio over the past two years. Now featuring Phil Greco on drums, their first single (the acoustic "One For The Road") was posted online in January, with the band confirming plans to now record a 10 song album at Jettison Studios prior to returning to live concerts. Their new single "Sweet Rosie" was said to be coming next, and they teased being back in studio to record that very song as of August 31st.

Current Release Status: Prior release timelines for their debut EP reflected their early 2020s lineup's material, and Justin, Shane, Bill, and Phil have largely kept things somewhat close to the vest prior to putting out "One For The Road". There are a lot of unknowns, especially given the 5+ years of production time and their decision to basically start over in 2023, and that this is a band that was primarily known for their work on the weekend cover circuit before their rhythm section left. It will be interesting to see how things develop, so stay tuned for updates!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Handsome Sandwich's first EP

Rumoured Songs: "Without You", "Partyfuel", "Change A Bit", "No Idea", "All Done Now"

Background: Before even releasing their full-length debut album "Deconstructed" in May 2023, local alternative/hard rock band Handsome Sandwich revealed that not all of their existing originals would be on that album, with plans to instead release them and some brand new songs on a forthcoming EP. In September of that year, they began recording this EP (which will reportedly have seven songs) at the Algoma Conservatory of Music, with bass & drum tracks completed that month, and then-guitarist Mitch Sirie was finishing his parts as of that December, with vocals still to go. At least five of the seven songs have had their names revealed in concert setlists. After only contributing to the packaging on "Deconstructed", bassist Rafael Medina will perform on this EP, and a "Reel" of him recording an unidentified song in studio was posted to the band's Facebook page. It's not clear if ex-rhythm guitarist Brandon Ruch will be in some fashion or not, but BookcluB saxophonist Josh Norling may appear again, as he guested with them to play "Partyfuel" at August 2024's Northern Vibe Festival. The studio version of "All Done Now" was sampled in this Vintage Games & Junque livestream with drummer Johnny Belanger in April, while "Collage" was cited as a possible album name at their Soo Blaster concert in May.

Current Release Status: To be determined, and while they're not recording this EP at the same place as "Deconstructed", note that the sessions for that album at Unsalted Audio wrapped up four months before the album release. An article about the band from The Sault Star in June 2024 noted that the seven new songs "will likely be released as singles", but whether this points to a change of release plans or is just an acknowledgement that they have seven individual singles to put out, I don't know. It will be interesting to see how things progress in the coming months!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pillory's first full length album

Rumoured Songs: "End Of Small Sanctuary", "Specimen Of Egotism", "Sculptor Of Cadavers", "The Angst Of Existence", "The Passing", "Abhorred Apprehension", "The Curse Of Eternal Sickness", "A Drop Of Shame In An Ocean Of Guilt"

Background: After a five year hiatus dotted with occasional reunion teasers from band members on social media, local death/thrash metal trio Pillory fully reunited last summer, picking up where they left off in their 2015-2019 run. During that time, they fully moved to death metal with harsh/growled vocals, completely abandoning their originals from their 2013 debut EP "Cringe At The Cross" in the process. While established mid-late 2010s songs and new material have been played in concert in the past year, Pillory only confirmed in this Facebook post on band t-shirts from May 19th that they were working on a full-length album, which they intend on "finishing and releasing", implying that sessions have commenced in some form. It's not yet clear if Blair St. John or his replacement Devon Lucier will handle bass.

Current Release Status: Given how little Pillory has publically said about the album on social media, it's anyone's guess, but the technicality and brutality seen on the band's death metal-era material (and increasingly so) bodes well towards wanting this music not to stall out in live performances. Keep tabs on what Robert, Bret, and Devon are up to on Facebook, and hopefully the album is on its way reasonably soon!

I hope you guys liked this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! This series will return on or around October 2nd, while our next monthly feature post will likely be our latest Defunct Local Band Profile, which is currently scheduled to go live on Wednesday. That's all for now, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? August 2025 Update

For our second post today, here's this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post, as we again look at the current release whereabouts of upcoming albums from local metal, hard rock, and/or punk acts who have had confirmed studio sessions towards them! This month's installment has one removed and successfully released album (Spades GT's "United"), but this is largely a holding pattern installment otherwise, with details abridged, re-dated, or left alone aside from one with new content (its title is in italics.) So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!

Insurrection/Beguiler Concert Preview, Clutch Concert Videos, And Superior Whitefish Festival Notes!!

Before we dive into a late notice-riddled array of weekend concert previews, here's a new news post to check out on this Wednesday evening, and it includes videos from a recent major concert, clarification from a recent battle of the bands, and leading off, a mid-week death metal show to preview in Sault Ontario. Let's get things rolling!

We'll start today with a special Wednesday night concert preview, as Gatineau, Quebec death metal band Insurrection and Toronto deathcore quartet Beguiler will make their local concert debuts TONIGHT at Soo Blaster! Insurrection's groove metal-influenced brand of brutality has been a prominent sight among extreme metal in la belle province since 2008, so this stop on their Obsolescence Tour should deliver all of the metal action that you can get on a work night! Meanwhile, this show is over a year in the making for Beguiler in a sense, as they were one of the five touring Ontario metal bands slated to play at Crucifest, the cancelled death metal festival in Leeburn in July of last year. So far, they're the only one of the five to land a new booking in the area, which is great to see, and they should crush it tonight as well! Local support includes death/thrash metal trio Pillory in their first gig since former bassist Devon Lucier returned to the band.

Devon hasn't played with Pillory since 2014, so welcome him back in style tonight! As well, crossover thrash quartet Hails will continue their recent momentum with their own in your face originals tonight as well, so don't miss out on this brutal foursome if you can come out! Promoted by Ha!ls guitarist Mikhal Muto, this all ages concert has a 7:30 PM start time, and tickets ran for $20 in advance through the local openers and at this link, with the door price jumping to $25. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details on this very heavy way to help end July 2025, and here's Insurrection live!

Next up, if you're wondering why I haven't shared any YouTube videos from Maryland stoner/hard rock band Clutch's headlining concert at The Dreammakers Theater at the Kewadin Casino in Sault Michigan yet, it's because I hadn't found any... until now! YouTube user Jamesmclaughing (who also saw Clutch in Flint a few years ago) was on hand on June 19th, capturing two brief videos, both hovering around 42 seconds in length. At least they're horizontal! The first clip (of the end of a song that I couldn't make out) can be seen here, but embedded below is Clutch playing the end of "Big News II" early in their set. Muffled audio on both, but James had a good view of the stage & Neil's intense presence, so watch these above & below!

While we're on the subject, let's address some unanswered questions regarding our belated coverage of the concerts at Saturday's concerts at the Superior Whitefish Festival in Brimley, and our thanks to Molly Escherich's mom Tiffany for helping fill in some blanks via her comment on our Facebook page's post to promote yesterday's post here! After noting technical difficulties on the Music In The Park half (which ultimately cancelled Acoustic Beaches' set), she clarified that performers Whistle & Fish are a duo comprised of local musicians Jason Smith & Ken Murphy, who jam often at the Christopher Columbus Italian-American Society Hall in the Soo. No genre hints, but from what I have gathered, they aren't a hard rock group. Regarding the battle of the bands that day, Tiffany was kind enough to reveal who won the top three spots, and the mystery band Crush actually won the $1,000 top prize, so who were they?

They weren't the girl group covering Chappell Roan, for the record. According to Tiffany, Crush is a new local band featuring Tarnished bandmates Alex Traynor and Josh Fair alongside former bassist Isaac Royer, and the intent appears to be for this to be an original music outlet while saving Tarnished for covers (note that Tarnished have an EP of original songs and put out "Lightswitch" last year, but that was before Chris & Ron joined full-time).  We'll let you know when/if we get clarification on Crush's lineup, sound, and intent, but congratulations on winning the $1K! Tiffany also confirmed that Kaleb Shannon won the $750 second place prize (no small feat for a solo artist, as Molly knew in 2023), while The Nameless claimed the $500 third place prize. Surprisingly, Molly & The Other Guys (who won last year's LSSU Battle) finished in last on Saturday, but Tiffany did partially chalk that up to their late drummer switch.

Molly's brother Cayd filled in when About:Blank's Kade DesArmo had to drop out that same day, and it was the first time Cayd has ever played a live concert with a band, so there were obvious setbacks, and Tiffany did concede that maybe it should have been an acoustic set instead. I don't know if the battle was judged by actual judges or by a fan vote, but clearly something was missing here for Molly & crew given her talents & how she did at the LSSU battles (2023's was fan voted, last year's had judges). Hopefully everyone had a great time regardless, and if the Superior Whitefish Festival has a battle of the bands in 2026, I will not miss covering it here! Apologies again, and thanks again to Tiffany for helping out here!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!

The Ethereal Tomb Concert Preview, A Surprise Upcoming Album Release, Pillory Updates, And More!!

Keeping things moving on the SMS, let's begin a very busy string of concert previews with a special Wednesday night metal show, while also looking at a surprise upcoming album release, a new full concert set video, and more assorted updates, so here's what you should know on this Tuesday morning!

If you want something a little heavier than what Rotaryfest is offering this weekend, you may want to consider hitting up Soo Blaster TOMORROW NIGHT, as three touring metal/hardcore bands will take the stage there for a special Wednesday nighter! The bands in question are Barrie/ doom metal outfit Ethereal Tomb, Brampton hardcore band Mile End, and Chilliwack, B.C. hardcore punk quintet Smuther, Solid mix of abrasive styles here, with Ethereal Tomb's slow and sludgy originals sure to contrast well with the faster intensity of frequently tour mates Mile End, let alone Smuther, so don't miss this touring trifecta tomorrow! Local support will come by way of crossover thrash quartet Hails in their first show since releasing their self-titled album late last month, and while this may seem like the de facto release party, note that they said on their Facebook page that they are working on physical copies for "Ha!ls", though they didn't give a timeline there.

Also, I wanted to briefly apologize for any erroneous mentions in past posts about the relationship of Hails guitarists Mikhal & Carmen Muto, as they are cousins, not brothers. Thank you to the Rotaryfest program for clearing that up! They debut on Stage 2 on Saturday. Despite teasing that online tickets would go on sale, this Mikhal Muto-promoted concert will instead have a $15 cover charge at the door. It is all ages, and doors open at 6:30 PM. Should be a solid night of hard hitting metal and hardcore action, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's Ethereal Tomb live!

Next up, here's a surprise impending album release, as defunct local grunge/alternative trio No Arrow are belatedly putting out their unreleased album "Souls For Sale" on Monday! This was announced last week via Mike Haggith's label MorningStar Records' website, in a press release outlining the 2005-2011 band's run & posthumous plans. As you may recall, No Arrow featured singer/guitarist Dann Pichette (later of SBD) and drummer Joe Falco (ex-Faithless Sin) alongside a handful of different bassists, with Harley Syrette (Quite Frankly/ex-Half Past) and Brad Griffith (ex-Bizotic) handling the low end on the "Souls For Sale" sessions. What's unsaid there is that Dann, Mike, and Brad's paths have crossed multiple times over in recent years via those "independent DIY musician promotion" YouTube programs and their related communities, with Dann (Wayek) and Brad (Gortium85) often submitting solo material to the same outlets that Mike does.

In terms of local grunge bands, No Arrow's heyday never crossed the timeline with Mike's eponymous band Haggith (who formed in 2012), but given Mike's work as an indie label head, he is doubly fitting as someone to help get No Arrow's only album finally on sale as originally intended in the late 2000s! Specifics on the release (price, streaming availability, if it will be largely identical to the free demo copy or not) are to be revealed, but Mike has confirmed that it will go on sale on Monday at this link in both CD and vinyl, which may have blown No Arrow's minds had that been a realistic option back then! Very exciting news for Dann, Joe, bassists, and fans alike, so stay tuned for updates on the album as they roll in!

Also, apologies for the delay in this making the site, but a full set video of local death/thrash metal trio Pillory's set opening for Sentiment Dissolve at Jay's Piston Broke Pub on May 19th was posted to drummer Bret Shuttleworth's YouTube channel two days later! In a minor shock, Bret said in the description that this was the first time that Pillory has ever played at the former Roosevelt Hotel, which sounds hard to believe, but I think he's right! One of their last shows with Blair St. John on bass (more on that in a bit), Pillory were seen here playing "End Of Small Sanctuary""Specimen Of Egotism""Abhorred Apprehension", "Sculptor Of Cadavers""The Passing""A Drop Of Shame In An Ocean Of Guilt",  their cover of Sepultura's "Territory""The Curse Of Eternal Sickness", and "Exhaustive Incarnation". While re-ordered, this is largely identical to what they played at The Pit at Soo Blaster in April.

The only exception is that they replaced "The Angst Of Existence" with their closing song "Exhaustive Incarnation". Things sound sufficiently brutal and technical to my ears, which is what you want from Pillory, though the Soo Blaster video may be preferable for the lighting and angle of the camera, especially given that that cursed support beam on the stage at Jay's is still there, and frequently blocked Blair from view (Bret said that the camera was placed where it was to avoid distracting fans in attendance). The Pillory logo watermark was well placed given where speakers were! Good stuff overall, so check out Pillory's May concert set in full below!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • In a late lineup addition for the first annual WestFest at Anna Marinelli Park on July 26th, local classic rock duo Frankly Speaking have been added to kick off the day's musical entertainment at 1:45 PM, as per the festival's Facebook page on Wednesday. As such, Frank & Frank will be the only act at WestFest that has never played at Rotaryfest Stage 2, though they did play at Stage 1 last year. See above for more on this debuting Jamestown/Steelton-area community festival next Saturday!
  • After going this long without listing their full lineup in text on social media, we can now confirm that local classic/hard rock cover quintet Headrush's lineup is rounded out by Fusion alum Frank Mannarino on rhythm guitar/keyboard and veteran local musician Gino Pulente on drums. Credit to the 2025 Rotaryfest program (as delivered in local mailboxes last week) for finally filling in the blanks for fans who haven't been out to see them live yet. Don't miss Headrush as the closing band on Stage 1 this Saturday!
  • The aforementioned Pillory have reportedly welcomed back Devon Lucier on bass, replacing Blair St. John, as per a quiet update to the intro on their Facebook page. A reason for Blair's departure was not announced, but things are definitely still amicable, as he still plays with Pillory frontman Robert Sartini in the cover rock trio All Over The Map (among other varied projects, so you'll see him around!). Best known as the frontman of 2010-2013 death metal band Crimson Crusade, Devon was a member of Pillory at the end of their original thrash run in 2014, and it will be neat to see how he factors back in with Robert & Bret after 11 years!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for the beginning of our Rotaryfest concert previews next! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? (July 2025 Update)

It's now time for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post, as we again check on the current whereabouts and most recent public updates on upcoming local metal, hard rock, and punk albums! No new additions or removals (though June 2025 had a surprising number of album releases that had no public pre-release hype), though three of this month's entries have updates, as noted with the titles in italics.

After a quiet summer due to "life's trials", Bullet Train resurfaced on their Facebook page on September 1st to reveal that they were working on two demo EPs, with the first one entering post-production as of the 9th, though it's not clear if their 2024 singles will be on them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Convergence - Gemini

Rumoured Songs: "Gemini", "In Bloom", "Breaking News", "It Ate The F&$%ing Moon", "Kraken Mara", "You Are Not Flesh"

Background: Just over a month after releasing their sophomore EP "Dead And Dreaming", local progressive metal band Convergence announced in February 2024 that EP #3 would be named "Gemini", with its cover artwork being released at the same time. Teaser clips of most songs from the EP were posted on their Facebook page and their YouTube channel since May 2024, with guitarist Brendan Christie revealing the names of five songs in a recent Facebook conversation, one named after the band's prior name Kraken Mara, though a new or renamed song named "You Are Not Flesh" was posted an advance single on Bandcamp in September. New drummer David Peredun will make his studio debut here. Convergence have been working in studio recently with producer Dustin Goodall at Unsalted Audio, documenting the sessions in Facebook "Reels", which also now involve singer Stephen Gagnon-Ruscio (who joined the band in the winter), but the newest teasers haven't 100% credited an EP as the end goal. Soo Blaster's Facebook promotion for their most recent concert said that they were "dropping tracks from 'In Bloom'", but the band has not confirmed an album name change on their own social media.

Current Release Status: No clue, and given the complexity of their music yet their independent studio trappings so far, that could bode a quick or lengthy timeline for "Gemini" (or "In Bloom"?) to come out, depending on what angle you take.

The guys would play it regularly at concerts from June 2022-August 2023, and were working in studio throughout 2023, revealing that "it's coming along" in a Facebook post that March, and teasing new recording sessions following earlier "learning experiences" there that May. After the departure of bassist Robin "Bones" Lee and drummer Anthony Fabiano (both now of Bullet Train) in the fall of 2023, Fort Creek opted to abandon material recorded with them "as a show of good faith", and have been working on new material and rebuilding their studio over the past year. Now featuring Phil Greco on drums, their first single (the acoustic "One For The Road") was posted online in January, with the band confirming plans to now record a 10 song album at Jettison Studios prior to returning to live concerts, with their new single "Sweet Rosie" coming next.

Background: Before even releasing their full-length debut album "Deconstructed" in May 2023, local alternative/hard rock quintet Handsome Sandwich revealed that not all of their existing originals would be on that album, with plans to instead release them and some brand new songs on a forthcoming EP. It's not clear if (ex-?) rhythm guitarist Brandon Ruch will be involved on the EP in some fashion or not, but Wyld Stallyns saxophonist Josh Norling may appear again, as he guested with them to play "Partyfuel" at August's Northern Vibe Festival. The studio version of "All Done Now" was sampled in this Vintage Games & Junque livestream with drummer Johnny Belanger in April, while "Collage" was cited as a possible album name at their most recent concert at Soo Blaster in May.

Current Release Status: To be determined, and while they're not recording this EP at the same place as "Deconstructed", note that the sessions for that album at Unsalted Audio wrapped up four months before the album release. An article about the band from The Sault Star in June noted that the seven new songs "will likely be released as singles", but whether this points to a change of release plans or is just an acknowledgement that they have seven individual singles to put out, I don't know.

John or his replacement Devon Lucier will handle bass on the final product.

Current Release Status: Given how little Pillory has publically said about the album on social media, it's anyone's guess, but the technicality and brutality seen on the band's death metal-era material (and increasingly so) bodes well towards wanting this music not to stall out in live performances. Keep tabs on what Robert, Bret, and Blair are up to on Facebook, and hopefully the album is on its way reasonably soon!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spades GT - "United"

Rumoured Songs: "Anthem", "United", "Demons", "Filthy Lie", "Game For Two", "Wrecked", "Strong", "Die On Our Feet"

Background: Long teasing plans to record their next album this year, local/Barrie crossover thrash band Spades GT began recording sessions for their follow-up to 2023's "Sewer City Radio" on February 17th at Room 21 in Toronto with producer Kyle Marchant once again. Their fourth release total dating back to their original all-local run as Jack Spades, this will be Spades GT's first album with new second guitarist Matthew Voros. Teaser videos on their Facebook page included guitarist Daniel Horton tracking bass on at least one of the planned eight songs (the sessions took place after James Roy Daley's departure but a few weeks before Sean MacNab replaced him) and ex-guitarist Jay Sarrazin returning as a guest musician. The final sessions on February 22nd reportedly featured guest appearances and gang vocals, strongly hinted to be via Fast Life frontman Andrew Moorehouse and rapper Julien "Mersinary" Dos Santos, as per the liner notes. The album name was eventually confirmed as "United", with the full cover artwork, track listing, and two advance singles released last month.

Current Release Status: The band plans to release "United" on Saturday, with a release party taking place that night at The Bovine Sex Club in Toronto (no word on local availability of CDs), and given the hype and pre-release schedule that Spades have in store for this album, it should be a big month for J.D., Dan, Tyler, Matt, and Sean as they prep for the launch! Stay tuned to Spades GT's social media for more on the album in the coming weeks!

I hope you guys liked this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! This series will return on or around August 2nd, while this month's Defunct Local Band Profile will likely be our next monthly feature post next week. That's all for now, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!
