LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Unfortunate Sun) & New Videos From Sault Ontario Bands!!

Now fully out of the holidays, we can settle into some more normal news posts again, and today's features new videos from Sault Ontario acts and a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for the E.U.P., so here's what you should know!

Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Unfortunate Sun will return to Huck's Pub & Grill in nearby Rudyard for one night only on Saturday, February 22nd! The show is the only new addition on their most recent concert calendar posting from January 2nd (again featuring the screaming astronaut motif) on their Facebook page, though the poster still includes their show at The Merch last month despite already having occurred. Next month's one-nighter will be Skip, Jody, Tony, and Jason's first stop in Rudyard since headlining a "hunter's widow party" there in November, though no word yet on if this new date will have a theme. If you like varied and crowd friendly hard rock covers, don't miss out on this show if you're in the area or wanna drive to Huck's, but fans will be able to see Unfortunate Sun this month in both Cedarville and the Soo beforehand! Next month's show is a 21+ affair at 8:00 PM with no announced cover. See above for more details!

Next up, let's head north to Sault Ontario for a selection of new videos, and we'll start with a new music video from dormant local death metal band The Bear Hunters' YouTube channel! Now, the song in question was released by guitarist Mitch Sirie's inactive solo project Sir Hell back in February 2023, and began life as a novelty song by his prior solo project April Eyes, but it is now being credited to The Bear Hunters, who memorably played it live on occasion in the early-mid 2010s. That song, of course, is the iconic "Squirrel Buddy", and the 2023 version features Mitch on all instruments aside from drummer Johnny Belanger, plus prolific local saxophonist Josh Norling for two solos. The music video appears to have been filmed as a Sir Hell video at first, complete with a (fake?) vinyl record copy of "Squirrel Buddy" being purchased, and the squirrel costume worn by Mitch in the cover art is worn by the musicians in the video.

The only on-camera tie to The Bear Hunters is their logo at the start, and the video doesn't feature Nik or Justin at all on camera (Johnny's Handsome Sandwich bandmate Rafael Medina plays bass in the video). Directed by former Gnaeus drummer Brendan Garlick, the video stars local folk/indie musician Juliana Regan as the titular squirrel buddy, who is seen working at The Rad Zone and acting like a squirrel, while also getting read the riot act from her boss (Big Finish Band/ex-Gnaeus bassist Matt Fronzi). The heavy death metal parts are basically presented as the squirrel's existential crisis, with dark mood lighting accentuating the musical performances, including Mitch & Johnny doing vocals in blue lighting, while Josh & Rafael join them to play the song proper in red lighting with the squirrel costume on. Fun little video for "Squirrel Buddy" that has some good imagination and lots of brutality from the original song!

What this video means for The Bear Hunters' 2025 activity and future is not yet public, but Mitch had posted on their Facebook page in July to tease that they were planning to release one more album and play one final concert. Given their massive slowdown in activity since 2017, you can't be too shocked that they're looking towards the finish line, but we'll have to see what the guys have in store ahead! Finally, here's some new videos from local classic/hard rock cover quintet Headrush's Facebook group! On November 29th, the band played at Pioneer Construction Inc.'s Christmas party (complete with 705Live Sound Co. at the controls), and while this was a private event, bassist John Amendola did post two videos from it, though sadly, both are under a minute long and were filmed vertically. One has the band (minus singer John Anderson) covering Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" with the rhythm guitarist/keyboardist on lead vocals, while the other has them covering Sweeney Todd's "Roxy Roller" with John Anderson back on stage for it. The covers sound good while they last, and lead guitarist Wes Greco gets some good room to shine, but the length and orientation aren't ideal. Props to the guys for playing on despite that night's major snowstorm! If you want to see something from a public concert, Headrush have you covered too!

For their last shows of 2024, Headrush rocked The Esquire Club over the December 28th weekend, and the Friday nighter was filmed twice for their Facebook group, and in both cases, the videos are over a minute in length and horizontal! John Amendola shared their night-closing cover of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" from attendee Audrey Marshall's personal Facebook page, but embedded below is his own upload, which is a montage of clips of them covering Journey, Steve Earle, Eddie Money, and AC/DC songs (the latter is black and white for some reason, and the Steve Earle cover has John Amendola on lead vocals). I'd rather hear full songs, but what we hear sounds good, so check everything out below!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Buckcherry), Theory Of A Deadman Concert Videos, And Rad Zone Updates!!

Here's a stacked news post for your Friday evening, and it includes early details on a popular local business' new home, lots of video footage from a big recent concert, and leading off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for a name band in a somewhat unexpected venue in the spring! Here's what you should know!

Platinum-selling Anaheim, California hard rock quintet Buckcherry will make their Sault Ontario debut when they headline at Soo Blaster (not Blasters) on Wednesday, May 13th! Best known for hit songs like "Sorry", "Lit Up", and "Crazy Bitch", this will be Buckcherry's (at least) fourth local concert appearance total, following headlining dates at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino in 2011 & 2012, and their outdoor set opening for Pop Evil there in August. Scope-wise, this is a much more intimate concert, but that appears to be by design, given the locales of the other stops on their Eastern Canada tour run that month. I'm not a massive Buckcherry fan, but they've been good to the area in the past decade, and they should have no problem getting a strong crowd to Soo Blaster in three months with their party hard rock hits! At least one opening band is to be announced, and Ottawa promoters The Diamond Mine Agency are looking for musicians interested in the opportunity, so e-mail thediamondmineagency@gmail.com for details.

And yes, I am well aware of the connections to be made to the cancelled Rock The Border Festival in Sault Ontario in June 2017, which would have been headlined by Josh & Stevie's rap rock side project Josh Todd & The Conflict. These are completely different established promoters, and I haven't heard anything worrying from them or their recent tours elsewhere. This 19+ concert has an 8:00 PM start time, and tickets are now on sale at this link for $40 plus service fees, which is comparable to premium seating last year. This should be a huge show for Buckcherry fans to see them up close, so visit the official Facebook event page for continuing details!

Next up, we have lots of videos to get to from the Theory of a Deadman-headlined concert at The Sault Community Theatre Centre on Sunday, courtesy of Christopher Paci's excellent YouTube channel once again! He labelled all of these as taking place at the Kiwanis Theatre (shortening the venue's old sponsored name), but that's no big deal, I still call it the Kiwanis more often than not. Chris shot 10 videos of the British Columbia hard rock/post grunge quartet's set on Sunday, including of their songs "Rx (Medicate)", "Santa Monica", "World Keeps Spinning", "Straight Jacket", "History of Violence", "Nothing Could Come Between Us", "Angel", "Bitch Came Back", "Lowlife", and as embedded below, their set-closer "Bad Girlfriend". It's good for fans that they still play their old hits despite their softer last two albums, but if you like the latter, you're in good hands! Chris was in further away seats than normal for shows he films at, so these videos can be blurry and have over-exposed lighting.

Also, the audio on these tends to be fairly muffled, but they're all very listenable, especially the newer tracks. Old or new sound, I'm not a major fan of Theory (of a Deadman), but fans will enjoy these videos, which cover more than half of their set. Check them out above and below!



While we're on the subject, did you know that this concert had an opening band?! Local advertising never confirmed this, and unless you follow the openers on social media, I can fully understand you guys not knowing! Reminds me of the Ace Frehley's Sault Michigan concert in 2009 in that respect, but I do apologize for letting that slip by! The openers on Sunday and on Theory's ongoing Canadian tour are newer Saskatoon rock trio W3apons, who did play at LopLops last May, a show we didn't cover on here because their available songs then didn't skew towards hard rock. Chris filmed W3apons playing this untitled original (which does have a heavier bite to it), their song "Off The Top Of My Heart", and as embedded below, a surprise cover of Rage Against The Machine's "Bulls on Parade".W3apons have a good sound, sort of an alternative/power pop hybrid that I can see fitting well with modern-day Theory in particular, so give their videos a look above & below as well!



Lastly, I wanted to give some early thoughts on the new Rad Zone location, now that it's been open for the past week! Of course, the local record/video games/skate/etc. store left The Wellington Square Mall last month, preceding their move to the former Foch Cleaners building at 721 Queen Street East. As of my first visit, they hadn't put up proper signage, but the front room currently holds DVDs and VHS tapes, the main second room holds records, CDs, video games, comic books, box sets, and collectibles, and the back third room comprises more records and the relocated Hole In The Wall Bookstore (not sure if that name will be used there still.) So far, everything on the sales floor so far is well laid out, but the new location is a little smaller, and the brick walls of the building may complicate adding new shelves. As of when I was in, cassette tapes and local albums were not on the floor, but I hope they can find efficient space for both, especially the local albums! I spent $30 worth on records and movies, and with a downtown location near more relevant local businesses, I know I'll be in more often!

The new location without mall hours allows The Rad Zone to close later for special events, such as tonight's Vinyl Listening Party hosted by DJ Seith (click here for details), so that's a plus! Of course, congratulations to Monk, Mel, and Evan on getting everything moved and back in business in such quick time, and check out their Facebook page for relevant updates, including recent videos related to the big move, such as this fast-motion preview video of the new store's layout, courtesy of Shaw Spotlight correspondent Christian Lemay. The Soo's Got Talent At Bon Soo, An Inactive Band Note, And Much More!!

Here's a new news post to check out on this Tuesday night, and it includes some assorted shorter notes, a surprising band dissolution, and leading off, here is lots of fallout from a recent young artist showcase!

As you may recall, this year's Bon Soo Winter Carnival kicked off this past Friday at The Machine Shop, with finalists from last year's Soo's Got Talent competition performing before the fireworks, and we have fallout from that to touch on here! Five of last year's seven finalists hit the big stage, and both SooToday's Darren Taylor and SaultOnline's Megan Pounder were on hand to take photos of the performers, so click on each website's link to see their pictures! Darren only posted seven pictures from this concert, including 2 each of The Apocalypse Afterparty and Adrian Sullivan, while Megan uploaded eight pictures, albeit omitting The Dancing Diva. Keep the above notes in mind, but they are all solid! SaultOnline's YouTube channel also posted this 27 minute video featuring the opening song each from all 5 acts, though it curiously calls them "the final five" from The Soo's Got Talent, despite the absence of fourth place finisher Coulson Perri. Maybe that refers to the 5 finalists who were able to perform?

The first act performing here was local rap/metal trio The Apocalypse Afterparty in their 2020 debut, and their first show since their advertised temporary bassist search in December to fill in for the absent Alice Rose. The bassist was unveiled at Bon Soo, and while he does look familiar, I don't have his name off hand. The A.A. are seen here playing their original song about being on an island, and it's a lively rendition that shows why they turned heads last fall! The other performances (in order) include reigning Soo's Got Talent champion (and Uncanny Valley frontman) Adrian Sullivan playing his song "Something To Believe In", runner-up Juliana Regan covering Melody Gardot's "Your Heart Is As Black As Night", Killabeatz delivering a trademark beatbox performance, and 1/3rd of The Dancing Divas (no word on where the other girls are) covering Katy Perry's "California Gurls" with edited lyrics to reflect our northern locale. Note the on-stage branding for The Soo's Got Talent 2020, though formal details on year #3 are to be announced.

Everyone performs well and showed why they deserved their deep runs into this competition last year, though things did seem a little rushed in the back half, and much like in the actual competition, everyone was capped at two songs or less (even the video is structured identically to what aired on ONNtv.) Give everything a look below, and watch for details on T.S.G.T. 3!



Next up, I have a surprising band to delete from our active band links, that being local Tool tribute band Parabol, whose Facebook (and only online) page was quietly taken down at some point in the past month. A reason for the band's apparent demise was not announced, but they had not issued a public statement of consequence or played live since their headlining concert at Soo Blaster in October. Despite that, their year-long run (kickstarted at J.D. Pearce's annual Halloween party in 2018) went above and beyond the life-span and activity level of most locally-originated tribute bands, which saw them headline a number of notable local concerts, as well as perform at the Shelby Kerns benefit show last June. I have no idea what happened to Parabol, but they had an extremely talented lineup who could tackle Tool classics with ease, and they were always welcomed on stage. Best of luck to John, Steve, Al, and Anthony in the future!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last little while, and these are in alphabetical order by artist or company name:

• In their first updates since November, local extreme metal solo project Awokest revealed on their Facebook page today that their new album is "halfway done", while also sharing a cryptic Facebook event page for an apparent Sudbury event in May called "The Secret Rites of Stray Dogs & Raccoon Gods". Is that a concert, or is it to mark an album release of the same name? Will this be a proper paid album, or a free posting a'la the 12 EPs of Christmas? Stay tuned!
• The Music City Sault Ste. Marie organization launched their own Facebook page last fall, as part of their efforts to encourage further musical development and promotion locally. The page has mostly devoted it's activity since to sharing links to news articles on local musicians  and upcoming concerts, but hopefully this is just the next step for their lofty goals! Become a fan above, and Music City SSM is now in our "Other Local Metal Links"!
• Local record/book/skate/etc. store The Rad Zone closed it's doors at The Wellington Square Mall on January 28th, following two months of close-out sales in advance of their move to the former Foch Cleaners at 721 Queen Street East. That said, their Facebook page has revealed that the store will re-open there on Friday, February 14th, so circle that date on your calendars to you can check out the new digs! I know I'm excited to see how things look there!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Black Label Society & Matthew Good), Plus More Updates!!

Before we dive into this weekend's concert previews, here's a stacked local news post for your Wednesday night delectation, and it includes some assorted updates from the last while, and leading off, two big LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for both sides of the border! Here's what you should know!

Los Angeles groove metal quartet Black Label Society will make their local concert debut on Friday, March 13th when they headline at The Dreammakers Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino! Fronted by long-time Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, B.L.S. have forged a loyal following in the past two decades with well received songs like "Stillborn", "Parade of the Dead", "My Dying Time", and many others, and with their hard hitting, leather-clad brand of metal and Zakk's considerable guitar skill in tow, you know they'll melt many faces in the E.U.P., this coming spring! Tampa, Florida death metal legends Obituary will open in their own local debut, and they have 35 years of brutality to unleash here, including cuts from one of the best selling death metal albums of all time, 1992's "The End Complete." It's awesome to see the Tardy brothers and company on a local stage, so don't bypass their set either!

This stop on Black Label Society's North American Crusade Tour will be opened by Portland sludge/death metal quartet Lord Dying, whose own technical approach and aggressive material should provide a welcome appetizer in three months! I am unsure if there is a specific local promoter putting this on, but at press time, it's not credited to Allstar Promotions on social media. Tickets for this all ages, 7:00 PM concert run for a flat $27.50, as this is a standing room only concert without seats. They go on sale this Friday at 10:00 AM at this link, at 1-800-KEWADIN, and at the in-person box office, and visit the official Facebook event page for further details. I have had the privilege of seeing B.L.S. live in Detroit multiple times, and they are a great live band with loads of familiar originals, and with ticket prices like this, I hope this show does well so that more extreme metal hits the American side of the border down the line. Get your tickets on Friday, as this concert should sell quickly!

Next up, here's another big new show announcement for March 2020, and it's very surprising in different ways, as acclaimed Coquitlam, B.C. alternative rock musician and political activist Matthew Good will return to Sault Ontario on Thursday, March 26th at The Sault Community Theatre Center! This will be the former Matthew Good Band frontman's first local stop since his acoustic Speak Easy show here in October 2007, which had a.... mixed reception, to put it mildly. If you want to relive that story from both sides, click here, but I don't want to dredge up the ill feelings or take sides. I just hope that this concert is better received by both Matt and the audience alike! Of course, Matthew has multiple gold records in Canada from his later, more varied solo work like "Weapon" "Born Losers", and his new CD "Moving Walls", but he still plays many M.G.B. songs live, including such heavier classics as "Hello Time Bomb" & "Load Me Up". It'll be cool to see him and a full band again locally, a'la his 2005 show at The Roberta Bondar Pavilion and his prior Band gigs here, which I know went well!

Opening locally is Halifax pop musician Ria Mae, who has been gaining in prominence on the Canadian charts with singles like "Clothes Off" & "Bend", and she should provide an interesting genre contrast in March! Presented by SL Concerts, this all ages concert has a 7:30 PM start time, and tickets run for $44 plus fees and taxes. They also go on sale Friday morning, albeit at 10:45 AM, and can be bought at this link, at (705) 945-7299, and at the Station Mall's Community Theatre Box Office. In spite of the divisive back-and-forth in 2007, I'm glad to see Matthew coming back to the Soo after over 12 years, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by business name:

• The merger of Northland Music and Thomas Walls School of Music into a local branch of the Long & McQuade music store chain will take place as soon as the spring at 647 MacDonald Avenue, the former home of Northshore Sports & Auto and Bazaar & Novelty. For now, both stores remain open with lessons and Long & McQuade stock availability, before they both formally merge into the larger east end location. Sounds like a great location for the expanded operations, so click here to check out SooToday's recent coverage of the merger and "new" store!
• The Rad Zone has found it's new home, as the local used record/video game/book/etc. store will move from The Wellington Square Mall in the new year to the old Foch Cleaners building at 721 Queen Street East, near Coch's Corner, as revealed in this Facebook video. A more central, downtown location without mall rent seems to make sense, and I hope Monk and company find continued success there! For now, The Rad Zone remains open at the mall, with continuing close-out sales throughout the holidays before they move, so click here for details on that front!
• Apologies for the delay in this making the site, but journalist & writer Ernest Skinner left SaultOnline in February for a new gig with Wawa-News.com, and his columns (Rock Talk included) went with him to the new site. Unfortunately, SaultOnline took down all of his old articles under any banner title afterward, but he has continued anew at Wawa-News.com with even more interviews with notable metal and hard rock musicians, plus Soo Greyhounds coverage. LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Candlebox), The Rad Zone Updates, And New Videos!!

Let's get a new news post up on this cold Friday night, and it includes some new videos, big updates from a fan favourite retail establishment with many ties to the local music community, and leading off, a big LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next year! Here's what you should know!

Seattle grunge/alt-rock notables Candlebox will make their local concert debut on Saturday, April 18th, 2020 when they headline at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino! One of the biggest alternative hard rock bands of the 1990s thanks to hit songs like "You", "Simple Lessons", "It's Alright", and of course, the Rock 101 staple "Left Behind", their familiar and hard-edged brand of original music should be more than welcomed to the local stage in the spring, so don't miss out on this one if you can help it! Potential opening acts have not been announced at press time. Tickets for this all ages, 8:00 PM concert go on sale on Friday morning at this link, at 1-800-KEWADIN, and at the in-person box office, and they will start at $30. If you've ever wanted some big name 1990s grunge or alternative bands to roll through, this is definitely a nice change of pace, so visit the official Facebook event page and the above links for more details!

Next up, we have some sad, if not entirely unexpected news from a Sault Ontario retail mainstay, as local record (et al) store The Rad Zone and it's attached Hole In The Wall Bookstore will be leaving The Wellington Square Mall at the end of the month, with plans to move to a new location in 2020. If you follow local news media, you may be aware of announced plans to heavily restructure the Trunk Road complex into a modern strip mall (source here), which left the future of the mall's non-Food Basics tenants in doubt. It's not 100% clear whether The Rad Zone is leaving on their own accord or if they weren't part of the mall owners' future plans there. Paul "Monk" Muncaster has owned The Rad Zone (née Radical Records) for 32 years, including the past 17 at this location, but he does plan to move the store elsewhere next year, location and re-opening date to be announced. For what it's worth, their secondary "Rad Zone 2" location at Vintage Games 'N Junque on Queen Street East seems to be unaffected by these developments.

That said, before the big move, The Rad Zone is having a 2 week closeout sale starting tomorrow and running through Friday, November 29th, with most used items running 50% off, new items 40% off, and VHS tapes for 99¢ each, not counting consignment items. This is disappointing news, but hopefully Monk, Mel, Evan, and crew find a great new location next year, as we need a great record, gaming, skateboarding, collectible, and book store here, and they fill that niche exceedingly well, while also being great supporters of local musicians. We'll close today with new videos, starting with the last upload from Christopher Paci's footage from Muddfest at the aforementioned Dreammakers Theater in Sault Michigan on November 1st, namely his clip of opening Kentucky hard rock quartet Tantric playing their song "Down & Out." It's not as well known as "Breakdown", but it's a catchy enough rocker, and it's well filmed like the rest of Chris' Muddfest videos, so give it a look below, and see much more at his YouTube channel!



Finally, here's a brand new original song from local hard rock/metal solo musician Tym Morrison's YouTube channel yesterday, entitled "Street Preacher"! If you know Tym personally at all, you may be aware that he has embraced Christianity in recent months, and while this song does retain his heavy music background, the lyrics definitely have a (positive) religious bent. That said, I can barely hear his singing in this recording, but the music holds up and has a solid chugging riff, plus a quality solo. Give it a listen below, and don't miss Tym at Gliss tomorrow evening!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Rad Zone Battle of the Bands), New Videos, And More!!

In what may be our last news post of the month, we have some big stuff to touch on today, including some assorted recent updates, new videos from two bands at recent Live705 concert events, and first, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT regarding a major concert event, so here's what you should know!

The first band is official for the Rad Zone Battle of the Bands at The Canadian Nightclub on Saturday, June 3rd, as local alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback will take part in their first ever battle in five weeks' time! No strangers to The Canadian in recent months, A Dire Setback have carved a big profile locally since their debut last fall, but how will they do in this third annual event? As you may surmise from their registration, interested bands can now pick up entry packages for this year's battle at Case's Music & The Rad Zone, as per sponsors Tidal Records on the Facebook event page, so if you want in, head down to either location! Bands must pay a $100 registration fee again to enter, but they will recieve 15 tickets to sell for the event (a'la the past two years), so if you sell 10 tickets, you make the money back, and have 5 more to make a profit! "Limited slots" are available for competitors, but note that no one-night local battle since 2008 has exceeded 10 bands.

While no other bands are 100% confirmed at press time, local rock bassist James White showed interest on the event page towards his bands The Elements and Handsome Sandwich signing up, but nothing is official from them yet. The registration deadline for this year's Rad Zone Battle is Saturday, May 20th (two weeks from showtime), so check the above links for all current details, and stay tuned for continued updates on the lineup, admission, ground rules, prizes, judges, and more!

Next up, here's that other new video from local alternative hard rock trio The Din that we teased yesterday, plus one more update! As you may know, The Din will be rocking out at LopLops Lounge on Saturday, May 20th, and an opening band has finally been confirmed for that show, they being local indie rock trio The Autumn Roots! This was announced on that show's Facebook event page, and it reunites two of the bands from the NLFB Meltdown audition again at the same venue, so hopefully Jeremy, Chase, and Greg (sorry, Carlos) deliver a solid set before The Din rock the stage! As for that video, The Din's full one hour set at Live705's March Mash-Up at The Canadian was posted onto their YouTube channel back on April 18th, and we've delayed this one long enough, so what should you know? This was actually filmed by Shaw TV's Christian Lemay towards their future features from the show, and kudos to him for letting The Din share the full set!

Also today, here's a new video from local hard rock/blues trio Electric Church's headlining set at Live705's Easter Bash earlier this month! Posted to their Facebook page on Sunday, this is of their original "Take Me Away" from their delayed set, and while it was unfortunately filmed at the vertical cell phone camera angle, it captures this fast rising trio in good form, so check it out below, and don't miss them at The Sky's The Limit either!



Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

• Following their largely well received European tour run, local doom metal trio AlgomA are back home, and were scheduled to play at Toronto's Bovine Sex Club on Wednesday (source here). However, the band has opted to cancel the show while guitarist Boyd Rendell recovers from surgery he had while the band was overseas. Out of respect for it's personal nature, I won't elaborate unless the band does, but stay tuned for word on AlgomA's local return show next month, and get well soon, Boyd!
• In a clarification note from our recent coverage of Gianni Gagoots concert videos, we can now confirm that recent guest guitarist & conga player "Ronnie Famiglia" is in fact Jaime Jacques, who has drummed in guitarist Liam Seymour's recent blues/country bands The Barn Board Trio and The Boatload Killers. When a guest performer gets his own Italian parody stage name, you know that's a good sign! Thanks to drummer Frank McCormick and fan Alex Moore for the confirmation!
• Local musician Rob Charlebois is again looking to start a local rock band, and while he's open to most styles, he does not want to play thrash, metal, or "Cookie Monster" (presumably meaning death metal growling.) If you're interested in jamming with him towards a new band project, message Rob at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from Saturday!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Din), The Next Local Battle Of The Bands, And Much More!!

Originally, I planned to double up two posts on the SMS tomorrow, but with a big announcement regarding the Soo's next battle of the bands, I thought it was prime time to get this on the site while the news is still fresh! Also, you will find lots of assorted shorter news items to cap things off, but first, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next month!

Local alternative/hard rock trio The Din will play a headlining concert at LopLops Lounge on Saturday, May 20th! Heading to this popular Queen Street East venue for the first time since their NLFB Meltdown audition set earlier this month, this appears to be just a regular headlining set for Mike, Tammy, and Brandan, so prepare for a full set's worth of high energy alt-rock originals and select covers in a months' time! An opening band is to be announced, and we will let you know when they are confirmed (for reference sake, Mike Mikus is playing at LopLops on Friday the 19th.) The Din's show on May 20th is a 19+ event with a $5 cover charge and a door opening time of 9:00 PM. If you're ready to give in to The Din once again, then keep this show in mind for next month, and visit the official Facebook event page for current details!

Next up, the annual battle of the bands from local concert promoter J.D. Pearce is returning for year #3, but with big changes, so here's what we know so far! After two years as the multi-night VM Radio Battle of the Bands in March, the battle (presented by Tidal Records) has been contracted to a one night event to be held on Saturday, June 3rd, and with Village Media not credited on the Facebook event page, The Rad Zone have stepped in as the battle's new title sponsor. However, the battle will be held at The Canadian Nightclub once again, which is always a great choice! Plans call for a $1,000 cash prize for the winning band (as was the case in 2015), with professional recording time, industry professional feedback, and more on the line. Listed sponsors will include Twin City Sound, photographers RAD.imagery, and Sudbury's CSA International, the promoters behind this June's Rock the Border Music Fest (whose lineup will reportedly be announced tomorrow), among many others. Keep those components in mind come June 3rd!

Details regarding band registrations, individual prizes, audience admission, ticket sales, judges, and more are forthcoming, but for reference, look up the results and recaps from last year's battle for a potential idea of what to expect. A start time of 6:00 PM is in effect, and this will presumably be a 19+ event. Though things have been retooled since last March, the newly titled Rad Zone Battle of the Bands should be a great event with a lot of intrigue, especially given the relative lack of one-night judged battles in the Sault Ontario in recent years, NLFB Meltdown aside! Check the above links for all current details, and stay tuned as updates come in!

Finally for today, here's six assorted shorter news items from the last while and as usual for these short item groupings, these are in alphabetical order by band, company, or series name:

• Memphis hard rock quartet Devour the Day have been added as a second opening band for the Alter Bridge/In Flames concert at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino on May 16th, as per promoters Allstar Promotions' Facebook page on Sunday. This is a bit of a makeup date for Devour the Day, who Allstar had previously advertised to open for Shinedown locally in July 2013, but they were on a separate tour and were replaced in the Soo by fellow Memphis rockers Prosevere. It's great to see Devour the Day finally rock The Dreammaker's Theater, so get more details on this expanded concert above, and tickets are still available!
• As per their Facebook page on Sunday, Sault Ontario punk/metal veterans Jack Spades have enlisted former Winkstinger/Sativa Rose guitarist Anthony Orazietti (a.k.a. Tony AO) for their new lineup, restoring them to a quintet for the first time since Tiffany Stocco's departure last summer. It's great to see Anthony back in a local band, he showed skill in his short runs with recent groups, so hopefully he adds well with Jack Spades starting at the CKY concert! Stay tuned for the identity of their new drummer!
• After an 8 month hiatus from public updates, local indie/punk quintet Northwest resurfaced on Tuesday via some photos shared to their Facebook page taken at Mission Control Studios, one with producer Dustin Jones at the controls while bassist Mike Smykacz is playing. This heavily implies that they're recording new material, but is a second album in the works, or is something else afoot? Stay tuned for updates, but it's great to see Northwest back regardless!
• Wondering where local goregrind duo Rotopsy have been lately? Well, the guys revealed on their Facebook page in December that a new EP release named "A Worthless Collection of Aggressive Sounds" is in the works, with a full length release also planned for later in 2017. The planned cover art is even online, and in a surprise, it is safe for work, showcasing Rotopsy at The Oddfellows Hall with a red colour filter and a surprisingly happy crowd. • SooToday's music webseries Tuned with Donna Hopper returned after a 2 month hiatus with a new episode yesterday, spotlighting the aforementioned NLFB Meltdown audition/battle at LopLops on April Fools Day, in which Donna was a judge! The video is solely about winning performer M.D. Dunn, who talks about his victory, preparation, and songwriting, and while no other bands are featured, Donna did ask Mark about his thoughts on the night's other bands. Entertaining episode, especially for fans of M.D. Dunn, so click here to give it a look, and good luck in Sudbury! I wonder if SooToday filmed the other bands that night?
• In a related note from our coverage of the former VM Radio Battle of the Bands, it appears that VM Radio proper (Village Media's local internet radio network) was quietly shut down in the past 5 months, as per the closure of it's website, and we have removed their rock station VM Rocks from our links. A reason for it's ultimate demise wasn't given, but VM Radio hadn't been actively promoted for reasons other than battle sponsorship in many months. With the lack of Canadian-produced FM radio in this market, VM Radio seemed to fill a void upon launching in late 2014, but hopefully the concept resurfaces in some form down the road!

Bear Hunters & Banned Concert Previews, Plus The Local Iron Maiden Comic Book Launch!!

Let's finish off this weekend's concert previews today with two Saturday nighters on each side of the border for you guys to take note of, with the former being extended given what all is going on with it, but we also have a preview of a special event going down tomorrow that, while not a concert, has a unique and very clear metal tie, so here's what you should know!

Prolific local metal/punk drummer Johnny Belanger's highly anticipated birthday concert will go down TOMORROW NIGHT at The Oddfellows Hall, with a stacked lineup of local metal and hard rock bands joining forces for the occasion! At least seven bands will take the stage for "Johnny B's #Litfam Birthday Sheezy" tomorrow, which comes in advance of Johnny's 27th birthday next week, and while 100% final timeslots are not confirmed, the official poster lists most of the scheduled bands, including Johnny's death metal band The Bear Hunters (in their first public concert appearance of the year) and his punk/metal quintet Jack Spades, plus reunited extreme metal quartet Winkstinger, modern hard rockers Eclipse, Johnny's hard/pop rock quartet Heavy Head, and new death metal quintet Kaepora Gaebora (who were confirmed on the Facebook event page earlier this month, but were added after the poster was made.) Notably, the latter three bands will be making their Oddfellows Hall debuts tomorrow, so come early to see them!

Now, Johnny noted two weeks ago on the event page that "a band" will be making a "special guest appearance", and while their identity hasn't been leaked, recent postings there strongly indicate that Bear Hunters rhythm guitarist Josh Stephney is coming up from Brampton for the birthday "sheezy." Might we see the full quintet Bear Hunters lineup for the first time since 2014? Does Josh factor into the guest band in some form, perhaps via a one-off band reunion? I don't know for certain, but be at The Oddfellows Hall TOMORROW to find out! Though the poster lists a 7:00 PM start time for bands, the event page credits 6:00 PM as the start for this show, which will have $5 admission, be ALL AGES, and will also have a barbecue on site for the birthday festivities (though what form and price isn't established that I've seen.) This is shaping up to be a fun concert for local metal and punk fans, with many familiar faces to be seen, and with a guest band that fans will apparently not want to miss, so don't miss out tomorrow night, and here's The Bear Hunters' full lineup live a few years back!

Lastly for this weekend (barring a super-late notice concert announcement), classic/hard rock trio Banned will return to their hometown of Kinross, Michigan for a headlining show TOMORROW NIGHT at The Orioles Club inside of the Kinross Township Hall! The Traynors and Wayne will play their only public show of the weekend tomorrow at 4916 West Curtis Avenue in their first date at this venue since November, and while I can't confirm if there's a special event tied to this concert, it appears to be similar in scope to their debut there. In any event, an early 7:00 PM start time is in effect, and there are no announced age limits or cover charges. Banned's talented and often heavy sets should get a good reception at The Orioles Club tomorrow, so keep Banned's hometown show in mind for your plans, and here's Banned live!

Finally today, remember how Saulite and artist Darren Emond recently signed on to provide the artwork for an upcoming Iron Maiden comic book? Well, the comic book is complete and ready for release, and it will see it's local launch TOMORROW at The Rad Zone! As per their Facebook page, Darren will be on hand at the Wellington Square Mall store tomorrow, with copies on sale for $5, while personal Facebook postings indicate that for $10, he will autograph your copy and also draw a sketch of Iron Maiden's mascot Eddie the Head for you, so keep both options in mind! Proceeds will help get Darren to next month's Niagara Falls Comic-Con to promote his new graphic novel "Giiwedanon" with local author Darin Corbiere. Some of Darren's other works will be on display as well, and he will be at The Rad Zone from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM. A handful of preview shots for the comic are floating around online, with this link confirming that the storyline is a partial biography of Eddie, while also outlining the birth of the Iron Maiden herself.

As a comic book fan who recently enjoyed some Free Comic Book Day events in the Detroit area, I definitely plan on being at The Rad Zone tomorrow to get a copy of the Iron Maiden comic book, and it must be a thrill for Darren to see this released, let alone after working with a legendary metal band! A review would indeed follow on the site too after I get my copy, so keep an eye out for that, and don't miss Darren's comic book launch tomorrow! VM Radio Launch & Availability Information, Plus The New Tuned Episode!!

Today's post is very much focused on recent postings and launches from one major local company, but all of it is of note for local rock fans, including the contents of the newest episode of Tuned and the formal launch of a new online radio network, so here's what you need to know!

SooToday parent company Village Media officially launched all 5 feeds of their new internet radio network VM Radio on Thursday! After a successful pilot launch earlier this week, the full website and player are up along with each station's full current rotation, with the launch and related notes outlined in this SooToday news release. Joining the existing website player, there are now Apple iOS and Android/Google Play applications to stream the stations with, while all 5 are now among the internet radio stations listed on iTunes' own internet radio service and through the Apple TV digital media player. There are also widgets on both SooToday and Local2's home pages that list what's playing on all 5 feeds at the time of page visit (from my experience, they don't refresh unless you refresh the whole page), but it's great for extra convenience to listen! VM Radio also announced that they're now the exclusive music provider for the Mill Market and the Soo's Downtown Association, among future establishments to be announced.

VM Radio has also indicated that they want to expand into additional Northern Ontario markets with "increased specialty programming & content", though they didn't elaborate on that or potential on-air shows and genre blocks. They are definitely still looking for local CDs and music to add to the rotation on their five stations (VM Rocks for rock subgenres, VM Bounce for pop & rap, VM Indie for indie/alternative, VM Roots for roots/blues, and VM Y'All for country), so if you're interested in helping the cause, message the stations at radio@villagemedia.ca A.S.A.P.! In terms of my experience listening to the stations, I do like the full final look to the player and website, with all I'd change being maybe putting album covers up, or listing what's next to play on each station. Just since I started this post, I've heard a wide array on VM Rocks including Woods of Ypres, The Drive By Truckers, Green Day, The Police, and Led Zeppelin, and like in the pilot launch, you have a lot of Canadian content to take in, with few ads!

The online player works fine for me with no hang-ups that it started, but if you're hoping for a review of the mobile applications, I can't help you yet. The Android application isn't compatible with my tablet, and every time I tried to open VM Radio with my iPod Touch, it crashed (but to be fair, it's 5 years old now, so my iPod might be too old in general.) The above SooToday press release did note that "more listening options" will follow, so if the stations turn up on TuneIn Radio or something similar, then I can comment on the mobile experience! So far, I do give VM Radio (and VM Rocks in particular) a solid thumbs up, and it's nice to have the extra diversity in the local radio market! I will note that there was some online comment concerning both Energy Rock Radio and Mike Cliffe's Audiofumes preceding VM Radio in this area for Sault Ontario online radio, and while I like both a lot, E.R.R. moved to British Columbia in 2011, and Audiofumes is a podcast rather than a 24/7 radio station.

We'll close today's post with one more Village Media note, as the newest episode of Local2's music video profile web-series Tuned With Donna Hopper went online on Tuesday, and at last, this is the episode featuring last month's Rad Zone 30th anniversary concert featuring The Ripcordz at The Rockstar Bar! I wonder what took so long to get this episode online? The 18 minute+ episode features Donna's introductory segments hosted in The Rad Zone (naturally), while the concert footage begins with 4 minutes of video from The Ripcordz' set (including Jack Spades' J.D. Pearce joining in on "X"), before transitioning to interview clips with Ripcordz frontman Paul Gott and Rad Zone owner Paul "Monk" Muncaster. When interviewing Paul Gott, he talks about his views on being a "rockstar", how he got into punk music, what should change in the industry to help rising punk bands, and where to find new Ripcordz CDs, while the interview with Monk includes his surprising music past, and the impact of vinyl records and his connections with the music & this format.

Later elaborating on how The Rad Zone has grown in the past 30 years, his planned retirement in 10 years, the continued impact he gets from people who discover new music at the store, and his advice for vinyl collectors, Monk's interview is very nice, and you can tell how much he loves the music and what's he able to do and provide for our area (and Paul Gott's interview is also an informative listen!) After a brief concert calendar segment, the episode concludes with some more nicely shot video footage from last month's Gob concert at the same venue, and bloopers during the credits, though there's no footage of the opening bands at either show. Still, this is a great and extensive episode of Tuned with lots of quality concert & interview footage, so give it a look at this link! Remember, Local2's video host doesn't allow external embedding. Rad Zone Anniversary Bash Fallout, Destroilet's Newest Member, And More!!

Here's our first all-news, no-previews/profiles post on the site in almost a week! Along with some assorted recent updates and new song uploads, we're leading off with the first fallout from this past weekend's concert that celebrated a great store's big anniversary, so here's what you should know!

We'll kick things off today with some long awaited fallout from Saturday night's Ripcordz-headlined Rad Zone anniversary party at The Rockstar Bar, including a new article and photo album from SooToday's Donna Hopper! Entitled "Some punk for Monk", the article (which went up on Wednesday) features a recap of the night's entertainment (though with no mention of DJ Seith's opening set, oddly enough), but mostly focuses on Rad Zone owner Paul "Monk" Muncaster, which reflects on his 30 years owning The Rad Zone and it's predecessors. The article does feature comments from Paul himself, including confirmation that he wants to retire from running the shop in around 10 years, saying that he wants to "sit & enjoy life with a fishing rod", and that he knows someone will pick up where he left off then. That will be a sad day when it comes, but make the most of his music and vinyl knowledge where you can, as he's been doing awesome work in this town for decades for the music & skate scenes (and beyond!)

Yes, Local2 video cameras were rolling too for a Tuned episode, but as of this writing, it's not online yet. We'll keep you posted when it's up! As for Donna's photos, which are all in black and white, she got 23 shots on Saturday, including 10 of The Ripcordz, 6 of Jack Spades, 4 of Destroilet (though none of DJ Seith), while Paul is the focus of three, one featuring the Rad Zone's birthday cake. Great shots as usual, so be sure to check them out above!

Next up, here's the big Destroilet lineup news that was publically revealed at the Ripcordz concert this past Saturday, as the band has added veteran local musician Brenton Ellis (a.k.a. Diamond Brent Panther) to their lineup as a co-lead singer, who will share vocal duties with Mike Hull going forward. Brent is well known locally as a singer and/or bassist from bands like Lion Ride, Detroit, and Tha Bombed Squad, and for out of town bands like The Labour Of..., The Sexual Vigilantes, and most recently Maximum RNR, who Brent parted ways with last month prior to moving back to the Soo. It's not clear yet whether Brent will sing alongside Mike during shows or will trade off for certain songs/verses, but he will debut with the band at the Rebel Spell concert at The Moose Lodge on Thursday. This is an intriguing surprise for the now six-piece Destroilet, and I just hope it's not considered a demotion on Mike's part. It's great to have Brent back in the area, and we'll have to see how things sound next week, so keep an eye out!

Also today, here's the first completed song from Haggith drummer Mike Haggith's next announced studio solo album "The Warinside"! Entitled "September", this was posted on his solo YouTube channel yesterday, and it's an instrumental track that's "of particular significance" to him, but is not similar to the rest of the album, which will be heavier, though with something for everyone (source here.) Recorded at Galactic Records in Windsor, Mike's hoping to have this album complete by early next year. I'll hold comment for now as a review of this album is likely, but give this short interlude a listen!

• Though technically not a metal or hard rock note, Staind frontman Aaron Lewis will return to our area on November 22nd for a solo country concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino. Fans may remember Staind's well received headlining gig here in April 2009, and while this tour is definitely focused on solo songs like "Country Boy", he is known to cover Staind songs in this setting too. For more details, click here!
• New local punk/grunge duo The Red & Black posted two new songs onto their Bandcamp page on Tuesday, along with a higher quality version of "The Army Song". The new tracks are "Put Up or Shut Up" and a yet-untitled song, and while the former is reminiscent of frontman Chris Shoust's Telephone & Address work, the latter is an experimental drum/piano piece that Spider Fingerz fans should like! Check everything out above!
• This is admittedly late, as the show took place yesterday, but local/St. Catharine's grindcore trio Shit Liver were added on short notice to yesterday's Northern Horde concert in Toronto alongside fellow local bands AlgomA, Bad Back, The Apocalypse Afterparty, and Crucify The Whore, plus non-locals Fox (replacing Ghost Daze.) Sounds like a very solid concert, hopefully everyone made a huge splash! Our source is the Facebook event page.

The Rad Zone 30th Anniversary Bash/Ripcordz Concert Review!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Canadian readers! After a delay partly due to some holiday weekend commitments, it's now time for our review of Saturday night's Rad Zone 30th anniversary bash, which actually took place upstairs at The Rockstar Bar rather than the advertised Algonquin Pub downstairs. If the reason for the switch was announced, I didn't hear it, but given The Rad Zone's long run as a record store (and more), the accoutrements of upstairs fit the setting better! Owner Paul "Monk" Muncaster and current Rad Zone staff were on hand to take in the festivities, which featured a number of prize giveaways, including Vans shirts, hats, wallets, shoes, and more, along with cupcakes (some branded with band and Vans logos) and a chocolate 30th birthday cake (complete with the show poster as icing) to help celebrate! Though my luck didn't follow to the draws, I did get one of the free Rad Zone records that were free to claim at show's end, and it's on the wall in my room now!

As well, congratulations to Habitat Shuffle frontman Christian Lemay on winning the door prize (a brand new Vans skateboard) at show's end! A Rad Zone banner hung above the stage as well for the show's duration, and given the season, The Rockstar Bar was decked out in Halloween decorations, which suited the late-addition opening act Shane Erickson (a.k.a. DJ Seith), who injected some seasonal music and cuts into his usual turntable mixes! This is the second time that I've seen a full DJ Seith set, and while I'm admittedly not the right person to critique such a performance, he still has a natural ease and flow when playing his mixes, and I liked hearing some familiar songs like "The Wizard" and "Intergalactic"! If I was him though, I'd have completely crafted a new all-out Halloween set with wall-to-wall seasonal music, especially having recognized some elements from his Oddfellows Hall set this summer, but it's great to have someone who loves vinyl records honouring a great store that specializes in them!

The first of three bands on Saturday night were local hardcore punk notables Destroilet, who made a surprise announcement pre-show indicating that this would be their last set with this lineup. We won't mention the change here just to spread things out to our next news post, especially given what's to come, but if you weren't at the show, I'll guarantee that it's completely positive and intriguing all at once! As for their set, the guys split time between 7 songs from their newest CD and assorted covers and newer originals like "Bamberg Witch Prison" and a brand new yet-untitled track, and if you've seen past Destroilet shows, the guys were at their usual intense level! If anything, it was surprising to see singer Mike Hull leave his shirt on for the duration, but he and the guys were on form, with John Conway & Christian Foisy's hard hitting guitar shining especially! Mike's vocals were a little quiet again, but this was a solid set, and stay tuned for more on Destroilet's lineup announcement!

Last of the openers was local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades, who kept up their recent momentum with an energetic set of their own! Along with every original song from their EP (save "X", as the original band was playing next), the guys played newer originals like "Motorwolf", "Fear Corps", and "Crossroads" for assembled fans, plus Misfits and SNFU covers, and if you've seen Jack Spades recently, you'll know they were on form! The guys had no major hiccups during their set, which featured strong melodic vocals from J.D. Pearce, excellent lead guitar from Jesse Cook, and steady and solid drumming from Johnny Belanger, all of which seemed to get a nice crowd reaction! So soon after Hardcore Homecoming, there wasn't much of a jump or change in quality, but that just screams to how consistent their live sets are, and don't miss them with Destroilet and The Rebel Spell at The Moose Lodge on the 23rd!

After an impromptu speech on The Rad Zone's impact and influence by former Lion Ride bassist Brenton Ellis, it was time for the headline act, as Montreal hardcore punk legends The Ripcordz rocked a local audience for the third time in 18 months with another intense and attitude-fueled set of their classic originals! Touring in support of their new CD "Made In Montreal", Paul Gott and company played some classic and recent hits like "Anarchy", "You Are Not Alone", "Ghosts of Griffintown", and "X" (with J.D. from Jack Spades on guest vocals), and fans ate up every minute! Even Monk jumped into the pit, which was a fun surprise! Paul, Matty, and Francois were in great spirits throughout their set, with Paul's serious intensity fitting their hardcore punk sound and presence, but it would have been nice to have seen more fans up front for their set, especially given the high attendance. Great set, and hopefully The Ripcordz roll back through here in 2015!

Closing with some kind words of thanks from Monk (who believed he had another 10 years in him at The Rad Zone, at least), this show was definitely a good time, and congratulations again to him on all he's done for local music and skateboarding in the past 3 decades!
