Local classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to Shooters Downstairs Lounge for matinee gigs on Sunday, August 21st and 28th! The Dennis Street nightclub has not yet confirmed these dates with Facebook event pages of their own yet, but Tym actually confirmed both dates with his own Facebook event pages (linked here & here). With these and his ongoing seasonal arrangement at The Mike Case Memorial Stage in its own home stretch, fans of Tym's prolific and entertaining hard rock covers should find a lot to like as August continues on Wednesday evenings and these two Sunday afternoons! It's worth noting that these two shows follow the two August opening Sunday matinee gigs by country musician Leslie Cook, including this Sunday, though it's too soon to say if Tym and Leslie are indefinitely trading two Sundays a piece or not.
Tym's Shooters shows on the 21st and 28th are 3:00 PM matinees with 19+ age limits and no cover charges, so visit the above links for more details, and don't miss Tym back at The Trading Post on Wednesday evening!
Next up, here's the last of this weekend's announced hard rock concert previews, as Traverse City, Michigan classic/hard rock trio Peril will return to The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! After skipping July for dates in the E.U.P., Jeff, Adam, and Brooks will bring their hard hitting, often old school cover attack back to The Rapids Lounge for the first time since May, though St. Ignace fans will have saw them there in June. Their sister band Scarkazm plays live more often, but Peril play in our area more for the dates they do have, and they've proven to be a well liked band for years in this area, so don't miss out on more good tunes this weekend! Tomorrow's & Saturday's shows have 9:00 PM start times, no cover charges, and 21+ age limits, so see above for more details, and here's Peril live! We'll close back in Sault Ontario with the third official song and music video from Rising Tide/Inner City Surfers frontman Dustin Jones' solo project Jonesy Land! I apologize for the delay in covering this, things have been busier than normal in the pandemic era this summer. Released on July 26th to Tidal Records' YouTube channel, the video is for their new song "Ain't Dead Yet", this time featuring Lake Effect frontman Frank Deresti (from the live Jonesy Land band of last year) on bass and ex-Goldfinger drummer Darren Pfieffer, who played with Dustin in the non-local bands Sideblinder and The Conspirators. Directed by Michael Cauduro, the video features Dustin and two clones representing different phases of his life going on a road trip to the beach in a vintage van, with the bulk of the video featuring one Dustin driving, one in the passenger seat, and one in the back playing guitar, with all three singing. Fun idea! Yes, all three appear on camera together eventually.
"Ain't Dead Yet" is a ska punk song (so Darren's involvement is apt), and while I'm not a diehard ska fan, it's a fun and bouncy song with enough punk vibes to go around, and it definitely has a summery feel to it! The video is very well shot too, though the vintage essence is mainly from the van & it's contents, not the filming style. While we're on the subject, Jonesy Land were the subject of a SooToday article by contributor and fellow local musician Chris Belsito on July 29th, where Dustin talks about how "Ain't Dead Yet" was written during & influenced by the pandemic, making the music video, and his future plans. In terms of scoops, Dustin revealed that Jonesy Land will be the name he uses for solo non-band songs from here on out, and the Jonesy Land project is meant to allow him to be fluid for genre, format, and lineup while playing with friends.
Dustin also teased writing "singer-songwriter-type" songs for his next Jonesy Land releases that will lead into a planned summer 2023 house concert tour with friends in the industry, which would be his first proper tour outside of Northern Ontario since the mid-2010s with The Rising Tide. Hopefully by then, he has proper social media pages for Jonesy Land beyond his streaming artist pages on Spotify and them (yes, "Ain't Dead Yet" can be heard on those too), but it's great to see Dustin staying busy as a musician while The Tide and Surfers remain dormant, so definitely watch the "Ain't Dead Yet" video below, and stay tuned for more from Jonesy Land when it comes in!
That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site this weekend! Thanks everyone!
