LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Peril & The Apocalypse Afterparty), Soundcheck Concert Preview, And More!!

Before we begin today's post, I wanted to apologize for missing yesterday's Tym Morrison gig at The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post for coverage on the site. While Tym only posted a Facebook event page for the show on the day of, I didn't pre-emptively add shows in his weekly arrangement there to our calendar because I know The Mike Case Stage closes for the season in September. If Tym does play there again this month and I hear about it in time, I'll try and cover it, but hopefully yesterday's show was a hit! Now, here's some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, a weekend concert preview, a new live video, and a new album!

Traverse City, Michigan classic metal trio Peril will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino on Friday, September 23rd & September, 24th! These shows were quietly confirmed by the venue on Kewadin Casino's entertainment page, marking the only hard rock-leaning shows at either The Northern Pines Lounge or The Rapids Lounge in the Soo this month (we will let you know when Kewadin announces October gigs at either branch). Peril were last seen in the E.U.P. last month with a weekend at The Rapids Lounge, but have not rocked St. Ignace since June, so hopefully Jeff, Adam, and Brooks' hard rocking cover attack finds another solid audience both nights in two weeks' time! As usual for Peril's trips north of the Mackinac Bridge, these shows have 21+ age limits, no cover charges, and 9:00 PM start times. Visit the above links for more details!

Also in new concerts, local party/rap metal duo The Apocalypse Afterparty are reportedly opening for American rap legend Tech N9ne when he headlines at Soo Blaster on Friday, September 30th! Their addition to the lineup has not been publically announced at press time, but frontman Paul Stanghetta told me about the news in a personal Facebook conversation, asking me to make the first announcement on here, so there you go, but hopefully public confirmation does surface! The A.A. were last seen on stage at the Glambition fundraiser in June, and have only sporadically posted on Facebook this year, so that alone doesn't make them an obvious pick to open this show, but remember that they do infuse rap into their originals, and their lively and distinct brand of rock should set the tone well! Tech N9ne is a fan favourite hardcore rapper known for songs like "Caribou Lou" and "Hood Go Crazy", so fans won't wanna miss out!

Other performers on the 30th include fellow Strange Music artist King Iso and Guelph rapper Robbie G (himself no stranger to the Soo), so don't bypass their hip hop stylings either! Co-promoted by The Diamond Mine Agency (who brought Buckcherry here last fall), this 19+ concert has an 8:00 PM start time, and has tickets running for $51-$57 on Eventbrite (no word on in-person availability), and VIP packages are also available at this link. Should be a great time for rap fans, and now with a dash of rock at the start of the concert, so visit the Facebook event page for updates!

We'll next transition to this weekend's only currently known hard rock concert preview (remember, the fall is usually a comedown), as local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will return to Shooters Downstairs Lounge for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Hosting duties at Reggie's West jam nights aside, this will be Soundcheck's first local concert in two weeks, having taken a road trip to Sudbury for gigs this past weekend, and luckily, Shooters had posted a Facebook event page for this one last month, so unlike at their Reggievelt show on the 26th, I heard about this one with time to act! A one-nighter due to or resulting in Encore's Shooters concert on Saturday, you can take in Soundcheck's old schoool-leaning blend of classic and hard rock covers tomorrow at 8:00 PM with a 19+ age limit and no cover charge. Uploaded to drummer Glen Thomas' YouTube channel & filmed during the soundcheck (fittingly enough) of a private event that they played at on August 20th, this features 3/4ths of the band (Cameron was actually filming this) covering Styx's "Too Much Time On My Hands". The first chunk wasn't filmed, but Terry, Paul, and Glen handle this classic rock staple with ease, and while the vertical camera angle is far from ideal, Cameron did at least explore the space and he got some nice views of the barn venue and surroundings, even if it meant not focusing on the band proper! Finally for today, here's a surprise new album release, as local "blue Chinese metal crash punk" quartet Sykotyk Rampage's 66th canon studio album was surprisingly posted onto their Bandcamp page earlier today! Officially released on September 1st, it's entitled "Scott's Pub & Crash Music" (I presume that's Scott on the cover), and while this doesn't appear to be a concept album, multiple songs do reference drinking, which is not against form for the Beckers & crew. Much shorter than their prior album (the triple length concept work "WYRD Radio 2: Kype The Jesus Boots"), this has fifteen songs, four of which being live re-recordings, but the wheel isn't reinvented from their usual alternative/blues rock cacophony. The album runs for $15 in mp3 format on Bandcamp and can also be streamed on major streaming platforms. However, when can you expect a review of this on the SMS?

Alas, not for a while. We just reviewed "WYRD Radio 2" on the SMS in July, so our 6 month anti-bias buffer period is still in effect for Sykotyk Rampage. At the moment, "Scott's Pub & Crash Music" (or a potential new album of theirs) is tentatively slotted in for January, but it won't be "new" much longer after that, so we'll see how it goes.
