Before we begin, I wanted to briefly thank everyone for the condolences and messages over the passing of my good friend and ex-girlfriend Victoria Childs last week. We actually met at punk concerts at The Oddfellows Hall in 2005 (she sure had stories to tell from those), and while life took us down different paths in 2008, we reconnected in the early 2020s, and eventually dated from last fall until this summer. Victoria didn't live an easy life, but she was a kind, funny, and generous person who was always supportive of the local music scene and concerts, let alone my work on the SMS, and I loved & will miss her very much. Enjoy live music, nature, and an iced capp in her memory, and please take care of your mental health. R.I.P. Tori, you were loved!
Today's post takes us to videos from the metal concert at Soo Blaster toplined by two touring metal bands on July 30th, as shot by prolific local concert filmer Christopher Paci for his YouTube channel! These were only uploaded there last month, so we were both late to get these covered, but I'd rather look at them late than not at all! Based on the upload order, it looks like everything was really flipped around aside from local crossover thrash quartet Hails opening the show, so let's start there, as he filmed one video from their set. In it, he filmed Brent, the Mutos, and Keegan playing most of "The Lost Cosmonaut", the opening song from their new self-titled album (to be reviewed here next month). I'll hold comment on the song itself given that, but it's a ripping performance for the early crowd, and while it is unfortunate that Chris missed the first 30 seconds, Ha!ls fans will want to check out this speedy performance below! Stay tuned for more from them!
From here, the show's lineup order really seemed to shift, as announced headliners Insurrection were performing in the next two uploaded videos. The Gatineau, Quebec death metal quartet were filmed twice for Chris' channel, where you can see them playing "The Gathering", and as embedded below, two songs, namely "System Failure" & "Failures Of The Flesh". Nice and brutal sound with clear and enunciated death growling (my favourite kind), Insurrection got the mosh pit opened up well here, and Stéphane Jomphe had good command of the crowd on or off the stage, so give Chris' videos from their set a watch above and below!
The penultimate band slot on July 30th ended up going to late additions Begulier, the Toronto deathcore quartet who were finally making their local debut over a year after the cancellation of Crucifest in Leeburn. They were filmed at Soo Blaster playing their songs "Plague Ridden Rats" and, as embedded below, a longer song that I had trouble identifying. Deathcore fans will take to the down and grimy but ferocious display on these videos, which fans definitely got a strong kick out of, and it was great to see Beguiler finally playing in the Soo area, so check these out above & below as well!
Finally, the closing band ended up being local death/thrash metal trio Pillory in their first announced gig with former Crimson Crusade frontman Devon Lucier on bass in over a decade. Chris actually filmed three videos from their set, and two are of original songs, namely "Specimen Of Egotism" and "The Passing". In cases like this, I'd usually share an original here first, but in this case, I wanted to highlight the other video, which sees Pillory covering Black Sabbath's "Into The Void" as a tribute to the late great Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away eight days previously. Robert doesn't sing here, but it's a solid cover that Sabbath and Ozzy fans will get a kick out of! The two originals show modern day Pillory at their brutal best, with Bret's technical drumming on point, and while there wasn't much public media from Devon's 2014 stint with Pillory to compare, he fits well here! Check out these videos above and below, and look for more from Pillory soon!
