LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Silent Nine & Greg Simpson), The Crazy Babies Concert Preview, And More!!

Possibly due to the long weekend ahead, this weekend's hard rock concert previews are pretty quiet, but we still have SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS to touch on, so here's what you should know for this weekend as well as a new live-streamed video from a local band's recent gig on the road!

Bone Yard 225 frontman Greg Simpson will return to the stage when he debuts at The Dive Gastro Pub TONIGHT before serving as the acoustic matinee performer at Beck's Bar on SUNDAY! Apologies for the short notice, both shows were only announced via the venues' respective Facebook pages yesterday and on Monday respectively. Fans haven't seen "the ranting rockstar" on a public stage since Bone Yard's acoustic St. Patrick's Day gig at Smitty's, and with your local 225's indefinite break still ongoing (our best wishes are still with Alex and family), it looks like Greg is ready to hit the stage again in the interim, with these shows likely to be similar to Bone Yard's "uncorked" acoustic gigs, albeit sans Alex and Warren. Take The Dive's AI poster claim of "live DJ / singer vibes all night" with a grain of salt, but as usual for non-summer gigs at The Dive, TONIGHT's "Think It Over Thursday" show will be indoors in "the naughty corner".

As for SUNDAY at Beck's, this does seem like it might be a replacement for a planned Bone Yard matinee gig there. Note that they're not hosting a band on Saturday. rather a blacklight dance party featuring DJ Dark Mark, so were Bone Yard supposed to play the double shot there like they have before? In any event, TONIGHT'S Dive show downtown is at 9:00 PM, SUNDAY'S Beck's show (which coincides with a euchre tournament) is at 3:00 PM, and both have 19+ age limits and no cover. Good to see Greg back at it after a couple of months away from the stage, so expect "uncorked" southern hard rock covers at both venues ahead! Visit the above links for more details, and we'll let you know if solo videos of Greg live surface publically!

Next up, local classic/hard rock cover quartet Silent 9 will return to the public stage on SATURDAY NIGHT at DeMarco's Boots & Saddles Roadhouse! Again, apologies for the short notice, the band only announced this concert via their Facebook page on Monday, though it was quietly added to their website's concert calendar in recent weeks. After taking April off, this will be Silent 9's first show since rocking Beck's Bar two months ago, but it won't be their debut at the Boots & Saddles, as they made the drive deep into the west end for at least one private gig in January. Like in recent years, the band is taking the summer off from standard bar gigs, instead focusing on festivals and private events, so if you want to see Jess, Ryan, Paul, and Steve rock out in a nightclub, and you're in the area/up for the drive, keep SATURDAY'S show in mind! This is an 8:00 PM and 19+ show with no cover. See above for more details, and here's Silent 9 live!

Lastly for known hard rock concerts this weekend is the local debut of Toronto-based Ozzy Osbourne tribute band Crazy Babies on SATURDAY NIGHT at The Full Throttle Saloon! Apologies for erroneously crediting them as being the Detroit-based Ozzy ReBourne in our initial coverage, Ozzy tribute band marketing confused me a bit at the time. The first real stab at hosting a touring headiner at the former Primavera Hall, this tribute to Ozzy's solo career and Black Sabbath work has received acclaim in their travels for their faithful stage show and Rod Clarke's closely matched vocals, so definitely keep this show in mind if you love the Prince of Darkness! Local support will come by way of classic/hard rock cover quintet Headrush, who are no strangers to the Full Throttle Saloon or as openers for a touring tribute band, so don't be late for their 1980s-leaning sets! They are playing sets before Crazy Babies' set and afterwards at midnight.

Now, this 19+ concert takes place at 9:00 PM on Saturday, but tickets cost $70 in advance at this link, at the saloon, or by calling them, and there will reportedly be no admission at the door. The high cost of tickets (higher than Triumph & April Wine at the Gardens!) has not gone unnoticed on social media, and while I won't pass judgment as to how the venue/headliners landed on that number, I just hope the show meets or exceeds expectations for turnout. Visit the above links for more on what should be a fun night for Ozzy and Sabbath fans, and for a preview, here are the Crazy Babies live!

Finally for today, here's a new live-streamed video from Sault Michigan hard rock trio Crush's Facebook page! This comes from their most recent gig, which saw them head downstate to open for Tribe989 at The Ann Arbor Music Festival at The Blind Pig this past Friday. Like at their show at The Merch last month, the Tarnished splinter group live-streamed it for local fans to check out, but as Facebook's current rules for live-streamed videos mean that they'll be deleted after a month, you guys have until around June 1st to see it unless Crush convert it or re-upload it as a regular video. You can tell it's a live-stream though because the 50 minute video doesn't start until 9:30 in, so skip there unless you want to observe them setting up. Their set features the guys playing "SDR&R", "Fire", "Intoxicated", "Hey You", their covers of AC/DC's "Big Balls" and Shania Twain's "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!", ...

..."Capitol Gain", "Too Close",  the original not introduced by name that may be titled "Fuck It", and an original that wasn't in the Merch livestreams that I think is named "Call It A Night" (Alex sang lead on that one). Alas, this video was shot vertically, and attendees can block the view for parts of the set, but the audio is clear and Crush show a good sense of humour and rapport with the Metro Detroit fans! They're actually opening for Tribe989 downstate again tomorrow (in Battle Creek, click here for details), but give their Ann Arbor video a watch this month while you can!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the SMS soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Soundcheck) & Sault Ontario Weekend Concert Previews!!

For our last post of April 2026, let's look at most of this weekend's hard rock concert previews! Due to the amount (though we have seen busier weekends), I'll hold our preview of Saturday night's Bimbo-headlined concert in Sault Michigan for tomorrow's news post. Now, here's what you should know in Sault Ontario this weekend in a hard rock/punk context, starting with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

Local classic/hard rock cover sister bands Soundcheck and Separate Wayz will join forces for another "epic crossover" weekend, this time at The Esquire Club TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, these shows were only announced via Separate Wayz' Facebook page on Tuesday, though note that the venue has not corroborated the bookings on social media. Marking their first joint appearance together since rocking Beck's Bar a month ago, TOMORROW & SATURDAY'S shows will be Soundcheck's first at this Second Line West staple since they played there in February, albeit with no crossover, as Separate Ways singer Nicole Thibodeau was ill that weekend (the shows were originally planned for solely Separate Wayz, but Travis bailed them out on short notice for Soundcheck gigs instead). Of course, remember that the two bands have a 75% identical lineup, just swap Travis for Nicole.

Good to see Terry, Jim, Johnny, and both singers together again for what should be a stacked pair of classic and hard rock shows, so keep both in mind TOMORROW & SATURDAY! Both are 9:30 PM affairs at 9:30 PM with no cover charges. Visit the above links for more details, and here's Soundcheck live!

Next up, here's some shows that did have advance notice before Tuesday, starting with a rare punk concert at The Speak Easy at Algoma University, where Flint, Michigan-based ska punk band The Write-Ups will make their local concert debut TOMORROW NIGHT! A spiritual successor to the Quit It! concert at the same venue last fall (if with much better promotion), The Write-Ups have the ska bonafides (including a horn section) and socially charged lyrics to go along with a fun and bouncy brand of punk rock that subgenre fans should easily take to tomorrow, so welcome them north of the border in style! Fittingly, newer local ska punk trio A.S.D.P. will be the local openers in their debut at Algoma University's campus pub, and expect their own original cuts to set the mood right! This is the newest promoted concert from A.S.D.P. frontman Mikhal Muto's agency Underground Events SSM.

This stop on The Write-Ups' "Up North Weekender" is an all ages concert (yes, The Speak Easy is licensed), doors open at 7:00 PM, and admission is $15 for general attendees and $10 for current Algoma University students with valid student ID. If you love ska punk, you don't want to miss out on this one, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and for a preview, here are The Write-Ups live late last year!

Also this weekend, local classic/hard rock cover quartet Quite Frankly will return to Beck's Bar for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Fresh off of their debut at Gateway Casino last week, this will be Linsaey, Frank, Harley, and Joe's first stop at the Goulais Avenue nightclub of 2026, having played one of their first post-reunion gigs there in November. The band promises "another night of great energy & your favourite hits", and who am I to doubt that kind of claim? Their blend of accessible but often heavy covers can be seen at the former Vibe Lounge tomorrow at 9:00 PM with a 19+ age limit and no cover charge. In the increasingly frequent cases where Beck's hosts a band on Fridays rather than a DJ, they don't double up a band on both nights, so Saturday night's band there are classic rock trio The Sidekicks. Visit the above links for more on tomorrow's concert, and here's Quite Frankly live!

Finally for this preview post, prolific local classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to Misty's Fifties for his second matinee concert there of the spring on SATURDAY! After ending his 2+ month break from concerts at this Second Line West pub in mid-April, this will be the first of three May matinee concerts at Misty's for Tym, so if you're up for a few hours of unplugged rock covers from this veteran talent, then head west on Saturday! Tym will be back every other week for the rest of the month, and we await a public announcement of his schedule at Misty's (and elsewhere) for the summer and beyond. This Saturday matinee concert goes down at 4:00 PM with a presumed 19+ age limit and no announced cover charge. It's great to see Tym back on a more normal schedule after his finger healed up, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here he is live!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for our Bimbo concert preview and more on the site next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Stones & Crows), A New Local Band, And The Headrush Concert Preview!!

As promised, we're wrapping up this weekend's hard rock concert previews tonight on the SMS, along with featuring new videos of the band in question, but leading off, we have a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT and the first public info on the new band involved, so here's what you should know!

We have a new local blues/hard rock band to add to our active band links, and they are Stones & Crows! This is the new project from former Electric Church frontman Spencer Pine, and if you liked that project, you may not have to seek them out to like their Facebook page, as Spencer just renamed the Electric Church Facebook page to repurpose it for the new band. This isn't common for local bands to do, but Generations did that with Jus' Chillin's Facebook group. I'll probably leave Electric Church (who broke up in 2018) in our inactive links with the same URL though, because the page has a double purpose now! Spencer is joined here by Floor Between Us bassist Nicholas Gingras and former HeadFirst/Them drummer Anthony Boudreau, with all three being given a stage name on social media (Spencer is "Bukky VanZant", Nicholas is "Nikki Crow", and Anthony is "Tony Stone").

Their lineup may not be complete, as according to this Musicians Wanted Facebook group posting from April 16th, S&C are looking for a keyboardist "who can bring that vintage feel to the... keys that sit right in the pocket to add depth to heavy blues grooves". Applicants must be aged 20-35, consistent and on-time, able to improvise and learn songs quickly, have their own setup, and have "feel, tone, and stage presence". Auditions can be in person at their jam space or online. Keyboards in local rock bands aren't exceedingly common, so hopefully they can find the right person, and contact the guys above if you're interested! In that LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, Stones & Crows will make their live debut on Friday, June 26th at Beck's Bar, which was announced in this jokey Facebook video featuring the guys sitting on a couch. No word on why this horizontal video was needlessly letterboxed into vertical "Reel" dimensions though, making it tiny.

The concert will be a 19+ affair at 9:00 PM with no announced cover. Based on early sound descriptions, Stones & Crows do sound like successors to Electric Church, with "a modern hard rock sound rooted in blues & grit" and artists like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan cited as being covered along with planned originals. Then as now, they'll stand out locally, so stay tuned for more from Stones & Crows soon, keep their debut show in two months in mind, and give their first video a look below!

Next up, here's the last of this weekend's hard rock concert previews, as local classic/hard rock cover quintet Headrush will return to The Full Throttle Saloon for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Last seen at this venue in late March, tomorrow's concert coincides with a "rabbit party" at the former Primavera Hall, literally meaning that they're serving roasted rabbit on the dinner menu tomorrow, so keep that in mind if that interests you! This will be Headrush's last Full Throttle gig before they open for Ozzy Osbourne tribute band The Crazy Babies there on May 9th, and if you didn't hear about the admission fees for that show, tickets cost $70 at the venue or at this link, and reportedly, there will be no admission at the door, which alone is unusual for a local concert. I won't pass judgment on how the venue/band landed on that price, but I hope that the concert draws as well as they're hoping!

Tomorrow's headlining concert is at 9:00 PM with a 19+ age limit and no cover charge. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and for a preview, here's some brand new videos of Headrush live at The Esquire Club two weeks ago! Bassist John Amendola shared three clips from attendee and local music supporter Audrey Marshall's personal Facebook page to the band's Facebook group, with Audrey filming the guys covering Triumph's "Lay It On The Line", Tommy Tutone's "867-5309/Jenny", and as embedded below, AC/DC's "Whole Lotta Rosie", which is the only one of the three to exceed one (or two) minutes in length. The Tommy Tutone cover notably features Soundcheck/Half Past drummer Johnny Amendola (John's son and ex-bandmate) sitting in for Gino Pulente behind the kit. That video happens to be vertical, alas, but Audrey did seem to focus on Johnny primarily for it.

He fits in well with his dad and gang on that cover, as you'd expect! The other two covers see Headrush in heavier territory (and timely in the case of Triumph) and doing a solid job on them, with John Anderson's voice suiting early AC/DC well in particular, so give everything a watch above and below, and don't miss Headrush tomorrow in Steelton!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the SMS this weekend! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Bimbo) & Ripcordz Concert Updates!!

Before we begin this post, I wanted to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of veteran radio host Bob Kevoian, who passed away yesterday at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer. Read more about this news at this link. Many readers will remember Bob as the long-time co-host of The Bob & Tom Show, the nationally syndicated morning zoo crew show that locals could hear on Classic Rock: The Bear throughout its 2002-2010 run on the local dial via WIHC 97.9 FM in Newberry. Long before The Bob & Tom Show began out of WFBQ in Indianapolis, Bob and Tom actually started working together much closer to here than you may think, at radio stations in Petoskey in the early 1980s. They moved to Indiana in time to debut their show in 1983, which went national in 1995. The Bob & Tom Show left the local dial when Northern Star Broadcasting took WIHC (now Strong Tower Radio) dark in February 2010 upon selling off their E.U.P. stations.

Save for a 2017-2023 spell where The Bear replaced Bob & Tom with local morning shows (it aired on sister stations then), the program has continued to air on The Bear's network, including its current tip-of-the-mitt home on WWSS 95.3 FM in Tuscarora Township, which gets fringe reception in the Soo. Bob retired from the show in 2015, but it still carries his name, and while I preferred Scott & Brian back in the day, Bob & Tom certainly had their moments, especially if you stuck with the show regularly to get their in-jokes and recurring gags. Along with Tom Griswold, Bob gave so many listeners a lot of laughs over the decades, and he will be missed. R.I.P. Bob!

Today's post otherwise mostly keeps is in the E.U.P., with a brief Sault Ontario detour, but we'll start with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for Sault Michigan, as Marquette art punk duo Bimbo will make their local debut on Saturday, May 2nd at... Pizza Hut? It's hard to be shocked about that conceit when the Ashmun Street chain restaurant hosted Permanently Pissed, Werewolf Jones, and locals in November, so why not an encore? Like then, this is expected to be in Pizza Hut's basement. Bimbo are a brother-and-sister band with noise rock influences and an minimalist yet distinct and abrasive original sound, and it will be neat to see them make their way east in two weeks! Detroit electronica musician Nicholas "R. Solomon" Sapounas will return to the Soo as well, who you may recognize as the mixer of local punk trio The Sole Aggressors' self-titled album, but he also headlined locally at Pickles Bar & Grill in Brimley in August 2024.

Nice to see an extra local connection from R. Solomon, and this will definitely be a diverse bill! Two local bands will open here, including the new local hardcore punk band Viscera, who you may recall making their local debut at Three One Three On Ashmun last month! For this concert, they will expand to a trio, as they have added Chris Lovins as their new bassist, as per their Facebook page. I don't know anything about Chris musically, but hopefully he compliments Blind Bob and Mitchell well next month! Another band who was a duo at the aforementioned Three One Three gig will round out the bill, namely punk/hard rock band About:Blank, though I don't know if Parker and Kade have found a new guitarist/bassist in time for this show. While I don't know if this Pizza Hut show is a Serious Business-promoted event, they did host the last Pizza Hut concert. This concert has a 7:00 PM start time, a $15 admission fee, and will have an 18+ age limit.

While multi-band, originals-leaning concerts in the E.U.P. have been trending upward in the mid-2020s, this is still now the most common thing, especially compared to Sault Ontario, so come on down to Pizza Hut in two weeks to see this diverse array of musicians rock out! See above for more details!

We'll close this post in Sault Ontario with some notes relating to the previously announced Ripcordz show at Beck's Bar on Saturday, July 18th! The venue confirmed this show months ago, in arguably their biggest touring artist booking yet, but a Facebook event page with the particulars went live this week, including the openers, including Nanaimo, British Columbia pop punk quartet Danger Box, who first played here at the still-closed Distraction in May of last year. Good to see their hardcore punk-tinged original attack back in town this summer, so don't miss them! Local crossover thrash band Hails (who opened last year's Danger Box concert and were playing at The Ripcordz' Distraction show last year when the cops pulled the plug) will fittingly do the honours in July! At press time, this will be Ha!ls' first show of 2026, as well as their first gig since the departure of founding guitarist Mikhal Muto in January.

Unlike last year, this will presumably be a 19+ event, it will have a $10 cover charge, and bands start at 9:00 PM. Some fans will also have two chances to see Danger Box in July, as on the way east on tour before looping back, they'll actually be headlining a private house party concert on Thursday, July 2nd alongside local openers A.S.D.P. (fronted by Mikhal) and 5 Dollar Bribe. While a publically advertised event with an admission fee, the address is not public, so if you want to go, "ask a punk", and click here for more details! See above for more on The Ripcordz' return, and stay tuned for more news and notes on the SMS soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Soundcheck, Separate Wayz, And TNT), Plus Recent Concert Clarifications!!

Before we dive into this weekend's hard rock concert previews, we have two related notes to clear up. First, I want to profusely apologize for missing local alt-punk cover band BookcluB's concert at Searchmont Resort this past Saturday, as they were one of the bands booked to play at the C.S.R.A. Snowcross Championships festivities last week. Alas, I only found out that they were playing via a Facebook "Story" (one of the temporary vertical videos in that strip on your news feed) from BookcluB that I didn't see until a half hour to go before the concert was scheduled to end. Neither BookcluB nor Searchmont confirmed in a permanent public post that they were playing on Saturday whatsoever (I also have not seen a public confirmation of who played the Sunday matinee show during Snowcross weekend). For such a busy and well hyped weekend, why wasn't the promotion better for the bands playing at The Kiln?

Apologies again for missing that show, I'd have happily plugged it had someone promoted it publically with even one day's notice, but hopefully BookcluB had a strong turnout! The other note relates to the band who played at Searchmont this past Friday (local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations), who announced on their Facebook page that their previously announced Water Tower Pub show on Saturday has been cancelled due to an unspecified family emergency. In lieu of that, bassist Pierre Anthony and drummer Tony Santoro will instead be playing that night with members of country cover veterans Tex Riviera & The Ride, so keep that in mind for the weekend, and I hope all's well with Valerie or Joe!

Today's previews will be broken up into two posts due to a bunch of linked SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS coming to my attention, so our previews of Tym Morrison's Saturday matinee and The BAG's album release party will be in tomorrow's post. Otherwise, let's start at Jay's Piston Broke Pub, where local classic/hard rock cover quartet Separate Wayz will take the stage for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via the venue's Facebook page on Monday, though the AI program that Jay's uses for concert advertising didn't nail what this weekend's bands look like. When did "Elly" and comedian Ron White join Separate Wayz? This will be Nicole and the guys' first concert since their short notice "epic crossover" with Soundcheck at Beck's Bar on Monday, March 30th. For standalone, Travis-free gigs, Separate Wayz last took the stage at The Water Tower Pub early last month.

Regardless of sister band collaborations, this will be Separate Wayz' first stop at Jay's in over six months, so expect lots of fun rocking tunes from this talented foursome TOMORROW! A rare one-nighter at the former Roosevelt Hotel (country cover band Elly McWatters & The Drifters are playing there on Saturday), TOMORROW'S concert is a 9:30 PM affair with no announced cover charge and a 19+ age limit. Visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's Separate Wayz live!

Next up, this will be a very busy weekend for Separate Wayz guitarist Terry Eaton, as he'll be doubling up on SATURDAY at Beck's Bar, starting with a matinee concert with his Soundcheck bandmate Travis Sharpe in their new acoustic side project TNT! Again, apologies for the short notice, we only learned about this show via this venue's own advertising on Monday, and I still am not aware of Terry n' Trav(is) launching an online page to promote this project or their shows. They do have an AI-generated logo to match Terry's current electric bands now, so there is that! Last seen a month ago at The Full Throttle Saloon, TNT are occasionally seen at local nightclubs, typically in acoustic-amenable matinee timeslots, and often in conjunction with shows from one/both of Terry's bands. This will be a solid appetizer for what's to come later that night at Beck's, so keep this one in mind!

As usual for Beck's Bar's (typically) unplugged Saturday afternoon acts, Soundcheck's acoustic splinter group will be playing from 3:00-7:00 PM with no cover charge, and while a 19+ age limit would make sense given that it is Beck's Bar, note that they did host the underage 5 Dollar Bribe as matinee performers earlier this month. Visit the above links for more on what might be TNT's Beck's debut, and we'll let you know when/if public videos of Travis & Terry unplugged surface for preview purposes!

Lastly for this preview post, we'll stay at Beck's Bar, where the aforementioned Soundcheck will complete the Terry triple header with a concert on SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies again for the short notice, I learned about this show in the exact same way as I learned about TNT's. Last seen at Reggie's two weeks ago, this gig will allow Terry & Travis to rock out in full force with Jim & Johnny returning from TOMORROW'S Separate Wayz gig at Jay's to make up the rhythm section once again. If you like classic and hard rock covers, you have a lot of options for how you want to experience it in the west end this weekend! I am not sure whether the Soundcheck or Separate Wayz concerts are respectively due to or the result of the other band booking a one-nighter, but if you're curious, Beck's are hosting a rare live band tomorrow (new blues rock cover band Sunday & The Broken Hearts) rather than bringing in a DJ.

And as I frequently note, TNT aren't technically "opening" for Soundcheck on SATURDAY, as the two bands have 4 hour timeslots each spaced 2 hours apart, but the common lineups are absolutely acknowledged. Soundcheck are on at 9:00 PM on SATURDAY NIGHT with a 19+ age limit and no cover charge. Visit the above links for more on all of Terry's short notice gigs this weekend, and here's Soundcheck live!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for our Tym Morrison and The BAG previews next! Thanks everyone!

New Videos From Convergence & 5 Dollar Bribe!!

Before we begin today's post, I wanted to offer our deepest condolences to the family & friends of veteran local guitarist, luthier, and guitar tech Gregory David Wilson, who passed away on Monday at the age of 69, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Read his obituary on SooToday at this link. Greg is survived by his sister Greta, brother Jay, and nephew Wade, and he was a proud pet parent who frequently shared photos of his orange tabby cats Chloe and Buddy on social media over the years. While Greg's credits as a performer in bands and in concerts are not in easily accessible supply in 2026, he was a very talented guitarist who made his mark with numerous local musicians over the years via his work in Gregory David Wilson Guitarworks, where he fixed, restored, customized, and sold guitars and basses of many kinds, and also helped local musicians on their concert setups and other musical inquiries.

Cremation has taken place already at the O'Sullivan Funeral Home, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family requests that memorial donations be sent to the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society or the Sault Area Hospital Foundation's Cancer Care Fund. While not a musician myself, I admired Greg's work with guitars, I always looked forward to his cat photos, and I actually sold him some guitar strings and related gear that I had won in a contest many moons ago. The reach and influence he had with so many local musicians from multiple generations is extremely evident, and our best thoughts are with the Wilson family at this time. R.I.P. Greg!

Today's post otherwise looks at some recent videos from Sault Ontario bands, and we'll start with progressive metalcore quartet Convergence, and after posting some amusing (if vertical) Facebook videos re-contextualizing clips from their new song "Gemini" with unrelated viral videos, they uploaded a behind-the-scenes "Inside The Chaos" video to their YouTube channel on Monday, featuring a look at the work that the guys are putting into the album, which has officially been renamed "Gemini" (as their planned third instrumental EP would have been) rather than its prior teased name "In Bloom". The video is helpfully broken into chapters and features hard-coded subtitles added in post-production. In order, you see singer Stephen Gagnon-Ruscio tracking vocals, guitarist Brendan Christie mixing songs at their own Woodward Avenue Studios and tracking his own guitar parts, a look at their studio gear, ...

...fellow guitarist Jake Valois going into the writing process for the album (with some amusing imagery), and drummer David Peredun discussing the songwriting process in voice-over while he drums on screen. Of note, David actually moved to Southern Ontario in recent months to further his own career and make new connections, but he is still in Convergence, is still working on the album, and he explained that they are making gigs work when he can return home. While a little piecemeal in its layout, this is an informative video that shows a lot while also not giving much away, and I really liked the tracking clips at the start, so give this a watch below!

Finally for tonight, let's wrap up our look at the videos publically shared to new local hard rock quartet 5 Dollar Bribe's Facebook page from their matinee debut at Beck's Bar on April 4th! For our coverage of the band's two own videos and what three other attendees shot, check yesterday's post. The venue's own Facebook page posted a (sadly) vertical video from that night featuring 3 minutes of highlights from the day's sets, though the cuts are very quick, and some snippets only run for around 10 seconds. In order, you will see the guys covering Weezer's "Say It Ain't So", The Presidents Of The United States Of America's "Lump", Temple Of The Dog's "Hunger Strike", Ozzy Osbourne's "No More Tears", Bon Jovi's "I'll Be There For You", Alice In Chains' "No Excuses" (with bassist Randy Lundigran on lead vocals), and Pink Floyd's "Money". Only the first two songs are unique here, and were not among what other uploaders shot.

I do wish that these clips were all longer (if not separate videos outright), but Becky(?) got some good close angles despite the orientation! The Ozzy cover got the most time among the highlights here, and you can see how impressed the attendees to the side of the stage were with the band/guitarist Tyler Greely's solo, and the pan shot of the audience gives a good interior view if you haven't been to Beck's since it opened last year (next weekend is their one year anniversary, even). Give their 5.D.B. video a watch below!

The other three videos were uploaded by Randy's dad Chad Lundigran for his personal Facebook page before the band shared them to their Facebook page. Unfortunately also shot vertically and all running for under a minute each, Chad filmed Five Dollar Bribe covering "Money", the Atlanta Rhythm Section's "So Into You" (what a pull for a band this young!), and as embedded below, "No Excuses". Randy sings lead on "So Into You", for the record. It's good to get a longer look at the A.I.C. cover, and their talents are on good display here for a successful first go at the public stage, so check out Jayce, Tyler, Randy, and Chase's other new Beck's videos above & below!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews on the SMS next! Thanks everyone!

5 Dollar Bribe Concert Video Showcase!!

How does another single-band post sound, especially another one relating to a recent concert? As you may recall, new high school-aged local hard rock quartet 5 Dollar Bribe made their public concert debut on Saturday, April 4th in the matinee timeslot at Beck's Bar that is usually reserved for acoustic acts, and if you missed that gig, never fear, as a lot of videos were shared to their Facebook page. Too many for one post, even! Before we get to the videos that were shared from attendees or other pages, the band proper uploaded two of their own videos the following day, namely covers of Silverchair's "No Association" and, as embedded below, the System of a Down version of Black Sabbath's "Snowblind". Kudos alone for covering a Silverchair song, especially one besides "Tomorrow"! Guitarist Jayce Albury sings on both of these covers, and doesn't play guitar at all on "Snowblind".

I don't think that cover is a particularly good choice for Jayce's vocal range, but these are well performed musically, and the camera work is good to capture the guys in action, even if both videos are only around a minute long each. It's unfair to assess their stage presences for show #1, especially at their ages, but hopefully they do loosen up more in time to match their clear talents. Give 5.D.B.'s first official Facebook videos a watch above & below!

Next up, the first videos that the band shared from external sources come from attendee Stephanie Goudreault's personal Facebook page. In a batch post also including a photo of the guys on stage, she included videos of Five Dollar Bribe covering Alice In Chains' "No Excuses" and, as embedded below, Ozzy Osbourne's "No More Tears". I went with that to embed because the "No Excuses" cover is vertically shot, focuses primarily on drummer Chase Chapman, and runs for only 39 seconds. Jayce (not on guitar again) struggles to hit Ozzy's high notes, but these covers are solid from what we hear with strong guitar work from Tyler Greely, so check them out above & below!

Chase's dad James Chapman filmed and uploaded the next videos to his personal Facebook page before the band shared them, and while his videos are (sadly) all vertical, he did upload eleven of them, including a handful of full songs! James filmed 5 Dollar Bribe covering System Of A Down's "Lost In Hollywood", the ending of The Queens Of The Stone Age's "In The Fade", 90 seconds of The Stone Temple Pilots' "Interstate Love Song" (with bassist Randy Lundigran on lead vocals), Staind's "Raining Again", Primus' "Too Many Puppies"(!), Bon Jovi's "I'll Be There For You", the second half of "No More Tears" (with Tyler leaving the stage to play the solo on the floor), 82 seconds of 3 Doors Down's "Loser", 31 seconds of Title Fight's "Numb, But I Still Feel It", 83 seconds of Blink-182's "Stay Together For The Kids", and as embedded below, Pink Floyd's "Money".

Jayce plays guitar on all songs here except "Lost In Hollywood", while Randy handles the Daron Malakian vocals on that song, plus the Mark Hoppus verses on the Blink-182 cover. Even with the non-ideal aspect ratio and sometimes partial videos, there's a lot to see here, and you can not knock the band's range at all. When's the last time you heard a local band cover Primus, and if you were to name the ten most likely Q.O.T.S.A. or Staind songs for a local band to cover, would what 5.D.B. picked be among them? For me, I can't say they would! Not every song here is necessarily my thing for genre preferences, but the performances are sound, especially for their debut, so give these a look above & below as well!

Fittingly, let's wrap things up with videos from James' wife/Chase's mom Jodi Chapman, who uploaded largely the same videos to her personal Facebook page as James did (no idea if one/both were the actual filmer), but her batch of videos does include unique content, including a handful of photos and two unique videos that were 100% not in James' batch post. These (also vertical) videos include a longer look at Five Dollar Bribe's "Snowblind" cover, and as embedded below, Temple Of The Dog's "Hunger Strike". Randy does struggle to hit Chris Cornell's vocal range on the latter, but it's another promising look at what could be a key cog for the future of the local scene, so check these out above & below!

There's four more videos from two more filmers that we will get to in an upcoming post, so stay tuned for that soon, but if the above videos are any sign, the kids are alright! That's all for now, but look for much more on the SMS soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison & HeadF1rst) And Easter Weekend Concert Previews!!

The Easter long weekend is shaping up to be quiet for hard rock-leaning concerts, but we do have a packed post, including SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS and a surprise band breakup announcement, all at the same venue, no less! I also want to mention that Maynard Hayes bassist Gabrielle Abulencia's graduation recital from the Algoma Conservatory of Music (which is a public concert) takes place tonight at The Loft, so click here for details on what to expect, and congratulations in advance! Now, here's what you should know for full rock concerts this weekend!

Local hard rock quintet HeadF1rst will play their "final bar concert" on SATURDAY NIGHT at Beck's Bar! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced this show via their Facebook page on Monday. The band revealed that they want "to announce this band's retirement", and while they did not elaborate on a reason for the decision, "they say (that) all good things must come to an end, but the music lives on forever". The wording (in combination with what members said on personal Facebook postings) does leave the door open for a further farewell concert not at a bar, but the finality implications are there regardless. It is worth noting that guitarist Raine Rancourt posted on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group last week looking for a bassist for a new project that he is working on with (former?) Handsome Sandwich singer Taylor Emlaw and an unspecified second guitarist & drummer, but I don't know how related that new band is to HeadF1rst's fate.

This news is extra surprising because members of HeadF1rst had just served as the opening night judges for the returning Shooters Downstairs Lounge Talent Quest karaoke competition on Sunday, but their activity had slowed down over the winter, playing just three (mostly short notice) nightclub gigs since the beginning of December, not counting THIS SATURDAY. Originally spelled as HeadFirst, this group became a highlight of the local rock scene since their mid-2023 launch, which saw them release two albums, play at Rotaryfest Stage 2 and Toystock twice each, hit the road as far away as Sudbury, and open for touring bands like Avessel, Blood Opera, and Woodhawk, so they packed a lot into a sub-3 year run. HeadF1rst are a talented group of guys (and girl) who had a nice classic influence on their originals and cover choices, and it will be sad to see them disband, but you have at least one more chance on SATURDAY!

Despite the bittersweet nature, this is a standard SATURDAY NIGHT concert at the former Vibe Lounge, with a 19+ age limit, 9:00 PM start time, and no cover charge. Between Raine's new band, Red's also-new project Bards With Beards, and the talent that Liam, Claire, and Anthony have, I'm sure we'll hear a lot more from all involved soon, but visit the above links for more details on HeadF1rst's swan song (at least for nightclubs) on SATURDAY! For a preview, here they are live at Rotaryfest last year!

Next up, that's not all for late notice Beck's Bar gigs of a heavier persuasion this weekend, as prolific local classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will bring his acoustic solo act back to the Goulais Avenue nightclub for a matinee show on Easter SUNDAY! Again, apologies for the short notice, this gig was only announced via the venue's Facebook page on Monday (as was the HeadF1rst show, albeit without referencing their breakup). Making his second live appearance since he finished healing up his broken pinky finger, SUNDAY's matinee show will be Tym's first at Beck's since ending his 2025 slate there on December 28th. Not Tym's most frequent venue in the mid-2020s, but it's good to see him back here after three+ months, so keep this one in mind if you want some early Easter SUNDAY entertainment! Given his increased focus on his faith in the 2020s, Easter is good timing for a concert too!

As usual for SUNDAY shows at Beck's, this is a 3:00 PM matinee gig (running until 7:00 PM) with a 19+ age limit and no cover. If you missed Tym's return show at The Dive, then welcome him back at Beck's on SUNDAY to cap off the long weekend! Visit the official Facebook event page for more details on this show, and for a preview, here's Tym live!

We'll circle back to SATURDAY to wrap up this post, albeit with a show that did get advance notice before Monday, as new local hard rock quartet Five Dollar Bribe will make their live concert debut in Beck's Bar's 3:00 PM matinee timeslot before HeadF1rst's concert that night! A change in protocol from acoustic matinee acts there, this reminds me of when Reggie's Place hosted another high school-aged hard rock band (One Shot) in August, but I haven't heard a peep from One Shot since that weekend. In Five Dollar Bribe's case, their lineup includes singer/bassist Randy Lundigran, singer/guitarist Jayce Albury, guitarist Tyler Greely, and drummer Chase Chapman, and you can check out current media via their Instagram and TikTok pages. From what I have seen of this band so far, they have a nicely developing sound, a sense of humour, and an eclectic cover range, with bands from Alice In Chains and System Of A Down to Hum and Dinosaur Jr. cited, among others

It will definitely be interesting to see how they go over, and the next generation will be the mainstays of the scene's future, so don't bypass them! Remember, Five Dollar Bribe aren't "opening" for HeadF1rst on Saturday, the two bands have separate four hour timeslots spaced two hours apart, but you can hang out to see both if you like. As with Tym Morrison the following day, Five Dollar Bribe are up from 3:00-7:00 PM on Saturday with no cover, and I'm not sure if this will technically be 19+ given their ages & the timeframe. Visit the Facebook event page for more details, and here's 5.D.B. live!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more on the SMS soon, perhaps including more previews? Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Soundcheck) Plus New Videos!!

A second post today was not in the cards, but an extremely SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT fell into our laps, so here's what should you know there along with another new show and a pair of new videos!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will play a special Monday nighter at Beck's Bar TONIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced three hours ago on the venue's Facebook page. The very late notice weeknight booking is basically Beck's' attempt to capitalize on the late cancellation of tonight's Goo Goo Dolls concert at GFL Memorial Gardens due to a band member illness (source here). This way, if you were planning to see a concert tonight, you don't have to cancel plans if you don't want to. TONIGHT'S concert is even better timed than this past weekend's Jay's shows were for Terry & Travis' birthdays this week, so give them good birthday wishes if you can come out! Note that, when Soundcheck plugged TONIGHT's show on Facebook, they did so using this image featuring both their AI-generated band logo as well as that of their sister band Separate Wayz, implying that Nicole will also be on hand.

Neither Beck's nor Soundcheck have firmly confirmed that Nicole/Separate Wayz will be joining in for an "epic crossover" beyond that image, but keep things in mind! Everything goes down TONIGHT at Beck's on Goulais Avenue from 8:00 PM "til the party stops" (a.k.a. 12:00 AM), this is a 19+ event, and there is no cover charge. Kudos to Becky and Soundcheck (and Nicole?) for coming together to ensure that there is some live rock music to check out even with the Goo Goo Dolls cancellation, so visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's Soundcheck live!

Next up, here's a newly announced concert with plenty of advance notice, as local classic/hard rock cover quintet Headrush will return to The Full Throttle Saloon for one night only on Saturday, April 25th, courtesy of the venue's Facebook page! Next month's show comes fresh on the heels of Headrush's return to the concert stage after a two month break this past Saturday, and things definitely went well over the weekend, so look for more of the same party anthems and epic rock all night long at the end of April! As usual for their Full Throttle Saloon gigs, next month's show will be a 9:00 PM event with a 19+ age limit and no cover charge. Visit the above links for more details, and while we're on the subject, the venue's Facebook page uploaded a new video of Headrush (one word) live there on Saturday! Normally, I'd wait for our next preview of one of their shows (April 25th or otherwise), but you can't see the band well and it's short, so what all is actually in this clip?

This video features 10 seconds of Headrush covering Bon Jovi's "Runaway", and while short, muffled, vertical, and from a side-stage angle that better accentuates attendees than the band, what we do hear isn't bad while it lasts! And while framing a vertical video like this to include that much ceiling is never ideal, at least the Full Throttle staffer who shot it added in descriptive text overtop of the ceiling, so it's not entirely wasted space. Give it a watch below, and we'll have more from Headrush soon!

We'll close today with new videos, starting with a brand new original song from local classic/hard rock musician Tym Morrison's YouTube channel! Freshly premiering tonight, this is "Deep In My Heart", a love song that Tym wrote in his 20s but only just finished this year. This ballad is accompanied by a lyric video full of stock/AI footage, but the song is all Tym's doing. The percussion may be a little loud compared to the emotional resonance of his vocals, but it's a well composed love song, and it's good to see Tym staying busy in the studio even as he just ended his 6+ week break from concerts, so give it a watch below, and stay tuned for more from him!

Finally, here's the third public video from newer local sludge/doom metal duo The Spaceship Opening's Facebook page! Uploaded last week, this is from the same event seen in their previous black & white clip (reportedly a Sault Theatre Workshop fundraiser that completely passed me by in November), and it captures a 3+ minute instrumental that harbours more of a 1990s alternative flavour, if still leaning into sludge metal. Andrew does face away from the audience a lot here (reminds me of early AlgomA shows in that way), but it's a solid performance that fans accustomed to two-man bands will get a kick out, so check out some more "east end rock & roll" below!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more news and updates on the SMS this week! Thanks everyone!
