LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison, That's Chester, & As It Stands), And Our New Weekly Feature

2011's been busy so far, and the marathon continues with this post! Today, we have the debut of a new SMS feature, but first, here are a bunch of LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS! Eighteen of them, so here we go!

Tym Morrison has updated the schedule on his official website to reflect his January AND February concert dates, and now we have confirmation of his planned shows on his weekly arrangements at Foggy Notions and The Big Cheese in Heyden for the next two months! As previously assumed, Tym will be back at Foggy's every Sunday this month, including THIS SUNDAY, January 16th, January 23rd, January 30th, February 6th, February 13th, February 20th, and February 27th! As well, his weekly arrangement as The Big Cheese kicks off THIS FRIDAY and continues on January 14th, January 21st, January 28th, February 4th, February 11th, February 18th, and February 25th! I assume all SIXTEEN of these new dates will have the same general structure, that being a 10:00 PM start time with no cover charge and 19+ age limits at both venues. Nice to see Tym booking so many dates, here's hoping the Big Cheese deal goes as well as the Foggy's arrangement has been! If you want some acoustic hard rock for your weekend concert going, you now have two options, so head on out if you want to! Check the above links for more, and for more on FRIDAY'S Big Cheese show, click here!

Next up, consider these new shows a cancellation as well, but we'll get to that in a second. According to this new Facebook event page, local classic hard rockers That's Chester will be rocking Docks Riverfront Grill THIS WEEKEND for a pair of concerts! But wait, weren't Turner Up confirmed for this weekend at Docks? Guitarist Robert Brown listed dates for this weekend at Docks on the band's Facebook group, so what happened there? I'm not sure, but according to his personal Facebook page, guitarist Len Ward is currently battling an illness, so that could be related. Nonetheless, Turner Up are scheduled for a Docks weekend next month, so keep that in mind! With that said, it is definitely That's Chester on Friday and Saturday night at Docks! Both shows have start times of around 11:00 PM, there's no announced cover charge, and you must be 19 to enter. For more information, visit the official Facebook event page! That's Chester always deliver with their classic rock sound, including a healthy dose of metal and hard rock covers, so they'd be worth checking out this weekend! Stay tuned for more either tonight or tomorrow morning during our weekend concert previews!

Finally, this isn't a metal concert per say, but one of the opening bands is a local metal band, so we'll of course mention it here! On February 19th, local hardcore quintet As It Stands will return to The Oddfellows Hall for the first time in 2011 as openers for two out of town pop rock bands! The headlining band is London, Ontario power-pop band Right From The Start, and another London pop punk band, Calling Ocala! I wouldn't say either are my thing or metal at all, but both are talented bands who are sure to find a good crowd next month! Honestly, As It Stands' original emo incarnation would be a better fit at this show than their current very heavy style, but hey, they'll really add to this show and get things going at a fast and relentless rate! Another opener is being sought but hasn't been announced yet. Tickets will be $8 in advance (or $10 at the door) for this ALL AGES show, which begins at 7:00 PM on February 19th at The Oddfellows Hall. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and as I hear more on this show, I'll have it here!

And finally, I'd like to announce a brand new feature on the SMS: A weekly classic video! Over the years, I've seen many videos of local metal and hard rock bands, live or otherwise, that don't get the recognition they deserve. Be they on Facebook, Photobucket, MySpace, or other external sites, there are many that are not readily available to share, watch, and/or embed that should be brought to people's attention on YouTube and on the SMS. What's the point in recording video of a band in action when people can't see it? So every week, I hope to upload one video of or featuring a local metal/hard rock band from a non-YouTube site to The Sault Metal Scene's YouTube channel! In most cases, I'll rip the video using Freecorder (a great tool for the SMS) and in EVERY SINGLE CASE, I WILL CREDIT THE ORIGINAL UPLOADER!! After all, they did the work to film the footage and/or upload it online originally, and I'll NEVER pretend like I filmed it. I hope not to repeat bands too closely together, and like I often do with our CD reviews, I want to tie in these videos with upcoming concerts or events, as is the case with our first weekly classic video below!

This comes from the first ever 19+ concert that I ever attended, on June 22nd, 2008, which was headlined by Sandman: A Musical Salute To Metallica. But this video wasn't of their set, it was of the openers, As It Stands! This was during the latter stages of their first run as a band, and it's of them playing an older original song that I don't remember the name for. This video was shot by Dave Pipoli and uploaded onto Facebook not long after the concert at http://facebook.com/video/video.php?v=18516826644. Dave deserves ALL CREDIT for this video and I mean absolutely no harm with this upload! No copyright infringement is intended!! Dave's camera work is slightly jittery, but the audio and video quality are pretty good, and this brings back memories for me as well! I find it interesting to note as well that in the description of the video, Dave mentioned that As It Stands were auditioning to open for Skid Row with this set, referring to the aborted Skid Row concert at Runway Park on June 28th, 2008. I never knew that a slot on that show was on the line for As It Stands during this concert, but I'd say they would have deserved to make it on! Though I think As It Stands have gotten heavier since their return, this was still good stuff! So, check out our first weekly classic video below!

That's all for now, but our next post will absolutely feature previews of this weekend's concerts, including TOMORROW'S metal night at The Rosie, so stay tuned! Thanks everyone!

New Concert Updates & Videos, Plus Half A Man News!!

We're back with another new post, our sixth of 2011 in just four days! Today, we have new concert videos, the latest from Half A Man, and kicking things off is the finalized lineup for an upcoming concert!

The finalized lineup for THURSDAY'S next metal night at The Roosevelt Hotel is now confirmed, with two prominent local metal bands now added to the lineup! Joining The Bear Hunters on the lineup are two other metal night veterans, As It Stands and Bring The Fallen! This will be both bands' first shows of 2011, and both look set to devastate to help keep the year going! As It Stands are fresh off their headlining slot at Soo Music Mash-Up, and are sure to deliver many moshpits during their headlining set on Thursday! And before I go too much further, I want to emphasize that I mean NO harm in the poll change to start the voting fresh due to the surprisingly high original total. With no way of knowing who voted on the last poll or how often, I understandably had doubts. Usually the votes are spread out more, that's all. Well, since the switch to AddPoll, I can see when votes were cast, and the new votes (so far) for As It Stands were cast at varying times over a 28 hour period on different IP addresses. Honestly, though I can't verify the old results, I may have jumped the gun, and for that, I am sorry. I'm a big fan of As It Stands, I meant absolutely NO offense to the band at all, and I hope them and their fans don't view me negatively!

I never once said they were scandalous, I just made an assumption that one person (no one specific at all) could have ran the total up to ensure a "victory", as you would think that there'd be more support on other choices as well. They have a great dedicated (and well deserved) fan base, and it is showing, especially so now! Again, I'm sorry to As It Stands, but it was better safe than sorry, as I didn't know what to think at the time. I'll make up for it! Back to the concert on Thursday, as As It Stands and The Bear Hunters will be joined by local death metal quintet Bring The Fallen, also fresh off of Soo Music Mash-Up! Their brand of death metal has been getting wide notices locally and abroad (including their first ever out-of-town date in Cochrane in July), so they're absolutely a band to watch and keep an eye on this year! Plus, after dropping out of the New Years Eve show at Foggy's, some of you must be starved for Bring The Fallen live, so make note of them on Thursday as well! There is NO COVER CHARGE, you must be 19 to enter, and everything starts at 9:00 PM! For more details, visit the official Facebook event page!

Now for new concert videos, all of which come from the New Years Eve show at Foggy Notions! This first one is another Megadeth cover from Sativa Rose, this time of the song "In My Darkest Hour"! Also filmed by John Veale and uploaded onto his YouTube channel on Tuesday, it features bassist Adam Veale on lead vocals following an introduction (and later, guest headbanging) by promoter Rich Moreland. Adam suits the song vocally, and the band sound very tight on this one! They seem to do really well on Megadeth covers, and thankfully not of the obvious songs either! Great stuff, and kudos to John for getting all these videos at their shows! His camera is great quality, and in HD no less! Great stuff as always, hopefully I'll get a chance to see Sativa Rose live real soon, it's been too long as it is! Check out the new video below!

Next are two brand new videos from State of Misery, the new local death metal band who have been making local waves recently themselves! Like Sativa Rose, they rocked Foggy's on New Years Eve, and two embeddable videos from the concert were uploaded onto the band's new YouTube channel on Tuesday! Both videos sound like live performances of originals, but I can't really tell for sure, as the audio isn't very clear. The same person recorded both videos, but the audio is very scratchy, and things seem to mush together, drowning out Steve Rhodes' singing a lot of the time. Note that the band actually apologized for the audio in a comment for the video below, which is nice of them! The video quality's not bad, the best we've seen of State of Misery at a concert since their debut! All things considered though, they are definitely a band to watch this year! Click here for the shorter of the two posted videos, and check the above links for more! For now, here's a brand new State of Misery video!

And finally, Brimley metal quartet Half A Man have more news to share, including the upload of two more songs! Both were uploaded to their Facebook page (neither are embeddable), and they're both covers, including Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" and Satori's "So"! The "Sweet Leaf" cover is more played to their style, a bit downtuned and slower, and though Erik Rintamaki's range doesn't match up to the original version of this song, they do a good heavy job with it! As for the Satori cover...wait, who are Satori? As it turns out, they're an old band featuring Erik Rintamaki & fellow local musicians like Micah Masta (Lower S.E.S.) and Greg Giles (End of Existence), among others! I did some searching on them, but they're likely too old to have had an active internet page. Good stuff though, sounds like a Half A Man original, and former Satori members definitely enjoyed the cover on Facebook comments! Heavy driving metal, gotta love it! Also, the band announced that they are currently looking for a temporary drummer to fill in for Doug Reed, who's going through some personal issues that I won't glamorize here, though the above links will fill you in. Hopefully Doug gets his life together soon, he's a talented musician all around! If you're interested in filling in as drummer for Half A Man, contact Erik Rintamaki at this location for more info! Jam sessions are usually Wednesday afternoons and Sunday evenings. Stay tuned for more on Half A Man as I hear it!

That's all for now, but I have weekend concert previews and more coming very soon, so stay tuned for those in the very near future! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Bear Hunters), Mike Haggith's New Album, And Major Changes To Our Poll!!

Hey everyone, it's time for our fifth post of the year, just three days into 2011! Today, we have just three topics to share, but they're all big, including a major change to our polls on the SMS, a brand new album release, and first, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!

New local death metal band The Bear Hunters have announced that they will be performing at The Roosevelt Hotel THIS THURSDAY as part of The Rosie's next metal night! This would be the band's third live performance following their debut last month, and their first show of 2011. At present, this is all we know concerning the show lineup wise, but I wouldn't be surprised if past veterans of The Rosie's metal nights return for this one. As news comes in, I'll have it! The same structure should be retained as well, with a 19+ age limit, 9:00 PM start time, and no cover charge likely. The Bear Hunters have been winning raves for their brand of death metal since their debut last year, and they should deliver another crushing set on Thursday! When more details come in on this concert, I will have them here! For now, check out more from The Bear Hunters at their official MySpace page!

Next up, Mike Haggith's 43rd solo studio album is now on sale! Yes, "Suspended Animation" is now available by request in physical copies, and will be officially released to his Reverbnation page on Thursday or Friday for mp3 download. No word on a price yet, but the other solo albums of his that are currently on his online store range from $3.50 to $5.00, so there's an estimate. The three mystery songs were revealed as well, which ended up being the previously announced "As Memories Fade Away" & "Nightmare On Reed Street", along with the new song "Hot Summer Sun". Get full details on the album at this location! If you want a physical copy, e-mail rotten_records_2008@hotmail.com with the subject "Suspended Animation" and they'll reply from there. I'm definitely getting a copy, probably when the online version is uploaded for convenience, but a physical copy would be cool as well! This is currently leading the pack to be our first CD review of 2011, which could come at any point in the next two weeks, so stay tuned for updates on that front! For now, check out previews of the album at the above links and his official Facebook page, and I'll have more on Mike's solo work as it comes in!

Finally for today, I wanted to announce a major change to our monthly SMS polls that we've been running. In the past, I have used AcePolls for our poll templates, which has worked out really well in the past, but with one fatal flaw: No vote restrictions. People could vote as often as they wanted for specific choices, which I hoped people wouldn't abuse unless they wanted to vote for multiple options. With that said, this wasn't an issue until our current poll on the biggest local metal story of 2010. The results as of today on the original AcePolls-based poll showed that leading option was the return of As It Stands with 28 votes. It's great to see that kind of enthusiasm and response to their return, and they do deserve the respect and attention, but here's where I'm suspicious: This choice had 21 MORE VOTES than the option with the second most votes, CD Plus' closure, which had 7 votes. Now, please don't take this as an anti-As It Stands statement (I'm a big fan of theirs), but I have a hunch that there was ballot stuffing to get their total up this far in the poll. If 28 different people voted for them, then I'm fairly certain more choices would have votes in the double digits as well. I just want things to be fair and balanced, and I think there was some abuse of the multiple voting privilege in the case of this month's poll. If you want to see the poll results since December 18th from our old AcePoll, click here.

With that said, I want to announce that we're now using a new poll format going forward, to avoid future ballot stuffing. This new poll (which does look a bit different) was made using AddPoll, and yes, it does feature adjustable vote restrictions. As such, I've decided to restart our poll on the biggest local metal story of 2010 to ensure a clean slate and a fair final total. This time around, there are two big changes from our old AcePoll. Firstly, you are restricted to one vote a week (I might relax this in the future), and secondly, I made some adjustments with the choices. All choices that got no votes between December 18th and today (Algoma Hope4Haiti, Gates of Winter's return, Phatstick's local return, SBD & Sykotyk Rampage's new album releases, and Woods of Ypres' "breakup") were removed, and in their place, I have added two new choices! In retrospect, they should have been in the poll initially, but I'm making up for it now with the restart! For the descriptions of the choices remaining in the poll with the relaunch, click here, but here are the two new additions!

Mike Haggith's local debut: Following years of solo and band work in Windsor, hard rock singer/guitarist Mike Haggith moved to Sault Ste. Marie to attend Sault College, bringing his solo project with him! Since then, he's released three studio albums and a live album, and has began making local attention with recent live performances at open mic nights at The Outback! With a new year upon us and a growing local profile, is his local debut your top story of 2010?

Turner Up
's lineup overhaul: Upon their local debut in late 2009, Turner Up played mostly metal covers, and were comprised of Todd Killam, Robert Brown, Jeff Brown, and Steve Brogno. Just six months later, only Robert remained following numerous lineup changes, transforming Turner Up into a classic hard rock quintet, including going through three singers (Todd, Brent Royer, and Krista Marshall) in a six month span. Luckily, their busy live schedule never faltered, but things changed rapidly for Turner Up early last year. Is this your top story of 2010?

There, hopefully this poll format will work much better to keep things even! If voting is at a good high pace, we'll call the poll on January 18th, but we could postpone the end until February 4th if it's slow to get going over the next two weeks. Time will tell! That's all for now, but we have more news and notes to come, so stay tuned!

Assorted News From The Past Week!

Now it's time to clear out the news desk a bit more by sharing a few stories that got lost in the cracks over the past little while. With all those concert reviews and the end-of-year special posts, I am admittedly behind on new stuff, so that explains the high amount of posts so far to start 2011. Things should get back on a normal pace soon, but first, here's some assorted stories from the last week or so! Because all could feasibly be a top story (except the last paragraph), I'll organize our first four in alphabetical order by band name. So, let's get things started, but remember to check out our latest "Where Are The New Albums?" post from this morning immediately below! We'll start with Sault Michigan hard rockers Bad Side, and this is stuff that I had previously referred to in our post where we looked back at 2010, but I never devoted an actual news post section to it. It appears that the band has officially decided to break up. There's never been an official statement to that effect, but the fact that they produced a graphic of a Bad Side tombstone (with the year of death being 2010), that about says it all. Honestly, this isn't too surprising, when you add things up. The band went on a hiatus in late 2009, cancelling scheduled local dates in the process, and following the firing of singer Melissa Krahnke and guitarist Jason Mapes from their radio jobs at Yes FM and The Bear last year, both of them moved from the area. Jason now lives in Nashville, where he's working on a solo album with other former Bad Side members, and Melissa now lives in Pennsylvania, where she works at the the radio station 98.5 KRZ. So their shows this past summer in Milwaukee were basically their farewell gigs, which is odd when you consider that you'd think their last shows would be local. Even still, they had a great five year run that produced many memorable concerts and three albums, and add one more thing to that: a retrospective DVD/CD combo! According to the band's Facebook page, it will be titled "Live After Death", and it will feature the band's music videos along with live videos, demos, interviews, and more! A video showcasing the intro of the DVD was also posted, which you can watch at this location! Good stuff, it appears to be a performance from their Milwaukee Summerfest show. It's still a shame to see Bad Side breaking up, but you never know what might happen down the road, and as updates come in for "Live After Death", I'll let you all know! Next up, here's a new locally-related video from a metal band that came through town last summer! You may remember on August 11th when Toronto instrumental progressive metal trio The Isosceles Project played at The Canadian Nightclub as openers for Skull Fist. Well, here's a side you don't see from many bands who play here, as the band posted a new installment of their tour blog onto their official YouTube channel! It's almost 8 minutes of what appears to be the post-concert party and gathering that the band had with fans and band members! There's lots of swearing and alcohol to go around, so if you're easily offended, don't watch. It is however mostly talking amongst the band and other attendees about the concert and such, so if you're expecting live concert clips or road footage, you won't find it. It's a good video though, and this is the kind of stuff you might have been a part of before with other local bands, and parts are amusing too! Check it out below, and fingers crossed that The Isosceles Project come back through here one day, they're an awesome band! Next up, do you remember in December 2009 when local photographer Curt O'Neil posted photos from the Kiss Battle of the Bands onto his official website, specifically of Lion Ride's sets? Well, I did mention in my review of Lion Ride's show last week that he was snapping pictures at this most recent show as well, and a sneak peek at his shots is now online! Five photos are now up, one each for Mikey, Marky, Marco, Iron Mike, and Carmine, and they're all great quality! Makes me want to see the rest even more! I didn't mention this in my review, but Curt got special on-stage access for some photos, which led to shots like this one of Mikey Lion singing right in front of the crowd! Who's that guy on the far left though? He doesn't look very metal. There's a lot more photos from Curt to come, and Donna Hopper too, so when the rest make it online, I'll let you all know! For now, click here for Curt's first photos from the Lion Ride concert, and I've also added Curt's website to our "Other Local Metal Links" list on your left! And next, we have the latest news and notes from Woods of Ypres! Again, this is stuff I had referred to in the past, but never devoted proper attention to. It has been announced on Woods of Ypres' Facebook page that their 2009 CD "Woods IV: The Green Album" will be reissued by their new label Earache Records on CD and vinyl on March 14th. Nice to see W4 get a wide release like this, as it is a great album (if depressing at parts), but this likely will spell a delay for "Woods V: You Were The Light", which David alluded to in his Governor's Ball interview. After all, if they put two Woods of Ypres albums out in the same timeframe, one (or possibly both) would suffer in sales, so it makes sense to stagger them and devote attention to one at a time. So we'll likely have to wait until the summer (at the earliest) for "Woods V", but it should be worth the wait! With that said, the band has a few more independent copies of Woods of Ypres' independent back catalog for sale, so if you want information on how to snag these albums, click here! And finally, the metal blog Antivenin included "Woods V" on their list of the most anticipated albums for 2011, including references to the reaction over their "breakup". Check it out at this location, and stay tuned for more Woods of Ypres news as I hear it! And finally, here's some updates I made to recent special feature posts on the SMS. I've made many of them date accurate to reflect this new year we're in, but the following are just factual edits or additions. Our Defunct Local Band Profile on M7K now reflects guitarist Mike Vincent's most recent work in The Bear Hunters. From our GarageBand Profile Mini-Series this past summer, I edited the Recognition and Sin Stereo profiles to reflect the removal of their iLike pages as "band pages", as they aren't really. Also from that series, I edited the Gates of Winter profile to reflect the addition of Jon Morrison on drums, but I did specify in the profile that he was not a band member when GarageBand was active, and he was only added to make the page accurate at present, as the band are still together. Finally, I edited our Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile on Lion Ride guitarist Mark Rand's solo project, as he is now going by his real name for his solo work, instead of his Lion Ride stage name Marky Lion. With that said, I also made it date accurate to refer to the fact that his show with The Mark Rand Band last month has came and went. As more edits become necessary, I'll have them for you! That's all for tonight, but I have a big update concerning our poll tomorrow as well, which has to do with "ballot stuffing". Details are coming tomorrow, along with more news, so stay tuned!

Where Are The New Albums? January Update

After a slower than expected year for metal and hard rock album releases in 2010, we have loads of stuff to look out for in 2011! No new albums from last month's "Where Are The New Albums?" update have been released, though two unlisted albums from Mike Haggith did see quiet releases. This month, the same albums from the last post in this series are back for us to examine their statuses, with one addition. and before anyone asks, the planned "Woods IV" rerelease won't be included unless new material is added to the package. I'll keep you posted on that! Many of the albums below will have edited entries either for new information or to date things correctly, given that it's a new year and all, and if things are changed, the album title will be in italics. So, where are the new albums? Let's find out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
April Eyes - Hollow Hope

Rumoured Songs: "Goodbye", "Left Behind", "The Only Road I've Ever Known", "Fall", "Reflections", "Obsession", Escape", "I Can't Let Go", "Absolution", "Hollow Hope"

Background: The oft-renamed April Eyes (previously known as By The Gods & Animas) is the solo project masterminded by Bear Hunters guitarist and Stillbroke guitarist Mitch Sirie. He's been working on solo material for some time now, featuring him on all instruments, including vocals and bass along with the guitar tracks. Over time, Mitch has deleted older audio tracks and blog entries from this project's MySpace page, but continually replaces them with newer material, although some aren't planned for an imminent album release. Recent blog entries have alluded to Mitch recording and releasing a solo concept album named "Hollow Hope", which he claims will be a "shocking" full length album, though it's been set back due to "circumstances". Featuring a mix of progressive & death metal with acoustic folk and indie rock, check out the newest samples of April Eyes/Mitch's solo material at his official MySpace page!

Current Release Status: I have no real idea. Honestly, this might not even get a release where it'd be on sale anywhere, but who knows! Mitch told me in e-mail conversations that he hopes to have a physical release of "Hollow Hope" next year, for what that's worth. The musical quality and songwriting on his material is very underrated, so I imagine that a release of "Hollow Hope" would get a good reception! Mitch was hoping for a release in 2010 on a past MySpace status, but with a new year having begun, who knows when it will come out. I'll keep you all posted!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bring The Fallen's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Defiling Despondence", "Exposed Embankment", "Stand Before", "Night Riders", "Nostalgia"

Background: Possibly from the studio time earned at some of the battles of the bands they won, Bring The Fallen had announced plans for a debut EP in 2009, recording it in September of that year with producer (and SBD bassist) Brad Griffith. The band posted unmastered mixes of three original songs onto their MySpace page, and had publicly announced that it would be out in "Winter 2010". However, since then, all traces of an imminent EP release have disappeared from their internet pages, and nothing has came of it in a few months.

Current Release Status: Unknown, but the band haven't shut the door on releasing it, as they confirmed that it was waiting to be mastered in their interview from the fall 2010 issue of The Fresh Magazine. However, I can't verify if it ever will be, as discussion of releasing these recordings did vanish from their pages for a reason. Hopefully it comes out, but you can check out three of the unmastered studio recordings at this location! Very promising stuff, nice and brutal, though it does need to be refined.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Garden of Bedlam - "Everything Will Die"

Rumoured Songs: "New Rain", "Against The Grain", "Everything Will Die", "Torment", "Your Disgrace", "Three Days", "Around The Bend", "With A Spark"

Background: Sessions for Garden of Bedlam's debut full length album began in early June at Stereo Soul Studios with producer Miguel Gauthier, who kept fans up to date on the recording sessions at his Facebook page. Only stepping out from the studio to headline The Rotaryfest Second Stage and to open for Kiss, recording for the album wrapped up on September 9th, though the band were still working on extra tweaks and changes as of October 6th. Miguel's page and Garden of Bedlam's Facebook group did a good job of keeping fans posted on the sessions, head there to check out updates! Select fans heard their first taste of unmixed tracks from the CD at Garden of Bedlam's Kiss afterparty on August 10th at The Rockstar Bar. The album was said to be sent away for mastering and duplication "very shortly" as of October 21st, so be on the look out!

Current Release Status: Past claims had suggested a 2010 release during varying points of the year, but we're obviously past that point. Drummer Derek Turner confirmed on their Facebook group that the album will be released "in the new year" (2011), although a general timeframe wasn't added. I'll put my current cards on a February release, but I have been wrong in the past when guessing. In the meantime, search for Garden of Bedlam on YouTube to hear live versions of their newest originals, while we wait for more sneak peeks at the finished studio material!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gates of Winter's second full length album

Rumoured Songs: "The Stars Call My True Name", "Edin Na Zu", "Dimensions", "Time Warp", "From Nothingness" (leftover song from 2008 sessions)

Background: Despite a hiatus from live performances lasting over two years, Gates of Winter never broke up, and are slowly working on their follow-up to 2008's "Lux Aeterna". The first glimpse of the new album was unveiled in February, when frontman and producer Lee Maines uploaded a snippet of their new song "The Stars Call My True Name" onto his YouTube channel, and he followed that up with two more demo clips in June. The band launched a new Facebook page in August to keep fans updated on the sessions, including the unveiling of a new song title, "Time Warp". Aside from Lee's announcement in November that Sault native Jon Morrison will provide the drum tracks for the album, not much else has surfaced. Work on the album is ongoing, and it sure sounds like their heaviest and darkest yet, which should get any Gates of Winter fan excited!

Current Release Status: I have absolutely no idea. The band have openly admitted that the recording sessions for this album have been a slow and steady process due to ongoing work and education, as stated on their Facebook page. Plus, with Jon and bassist Steve Furgiuele living out of town, that can't make things any quicker. But don't worry, the album is still in progress, and when updates come out, we'll know! If you asked me to guess on a release timeframe, I'd say the spring, but it'd be a complete and utter guess. For now though, check out Gates of Winter's posted demos by clicking here!

Half Past's self-titled debut album

Rumoured Songs: "Dead Again", "War Inside My Head", "One More Day"

Background: The local hard rock quartet officially announced that they were working on their debut album on their Facebook page on November 13th! The first snippet of their studio material, recorded at their own Half Past Studio Productions, was posted in a Facebook video that same day, with a following note confirming the news. The aim is to release the album in the spring and return to the stage before it's release. The recent return of Arthur Lacasse likely means that any prior recordings done with former bassist Ryan Disano won't be used. Little has been posted since, but we'll have it for you once we hear it!

Current Release Status: I don't have a real guess, but I'm gonna put my early cards on the spring, as the band have hinted towards in the past. Still, I imagine this won't be a quick process, as it is being self-recorded and all that, but they know what they're doing, and when the album comes out, it will be definitely worth picking up!

Lion Ride's first full length album

Rumoured Songs: "Stick It In", "Snail Trail", "Bang Bang"

Background: Lion Ride entered the studio for the first sessions of their upcoming full length CD in late April at Toronto's BWC Studios with producer Greg Dawson, same as when current and ex-members of the band recorded Detroit's newest album last year. The band recorded four songs at those sessions, including "Stick It In", which was uploaded onto their MySpace page in early May as a preview. The studio version of another original "Snail Trail" was later posted on BWC Studios' MySpace page, with another new song "Bang Bang" also being played at live concerts. Delays did take place over the summer while drummer Iron Mike Bison acted as tour manager for The Envy on their tour dates with Kiss (including their Sault Ontario show in August), but the band are back in action now! Lion Ride finally acknowledged and apologized for the sparse album updates on their Facebook page on November 27th with this video featuring studio session clips set to "Snail Trail", but new updates specifically pertaining to their new album haven't came since.

Current Release Status: Before their MySpace page's customization was crippled following the new layout changeover, Lion Ride said this album was "coming soon" on graphics there, following past hopes for a fall release. They're past their projected release timeframe, but when will we see this album? I don't know, what with the lack of new album updates. I'm thinking maybe the late spring, unless recording sessions we don't know about happened. However, you can get a preview of the CD by checking out the studio versions of "Stick It In" at this location and "Snail Trail" by clicking here!

Mike Haggith - "Suspended Animation" and "The Blue Album"

Rumoured Songs (SA): "Sun Perfume", "The Institution", "The Ledge/I Love You Anyways", "Trinity", "The Day They Killed Small", "1980"

Rumoured Songs (BA): "The Curse of [13]"

Background: Since last month, a lot changed with the planned release of "Suspended Animation", including the removal of eight tracks from the album following a decision on many songs lacking "drive". Six new songs (three unrevealed) were added to the track listing for his 43rd album, which has been in the process of recording since October at his main studios in Windsor. Described as an upbeat and heavy rock album, this will be the first Mike Haggith solo album recorded using digital recording equipment. The cover art (which has also changed since last month) and most of the tracks are completed for the album. It will be released through his independent label Rotten Records, with a new expected release date of...tomorrow, actually! Like his past few albums, "Suspended Animation" will likely only be available by paid mp3 download on his internet pages, notably on Reverbnation, which currently features a couple of the planned songs that you can stream there for free! A second new album, a self-described "cut and paste project" titled "The Blue Album", has also been announced for a projected April release. Click here for full current details on both albums!

Current Release Status: Well, if Mike says "Suspended Animation" comes out tomorrow, I'll believe him! He takes his music very seriously, he wants his songs and material to be as good as possible, and he publically tells us when he plans to do things ahead of time, so I'm inclined to think that tomorrow will stand. I can't say for certain if his past albums stuck to the announced release date, but I'll assume the best going forward, especially when he was forthcoming and honest about the delay! "The Blue Album" should see an April release as well, but who knows what could happen by then. No matter what, there's a lot of exciting stuff coming from Mike Haggith, and I'll share it with you whenever I find out more!

No Arrow - "Souls For Sale"

Rumoured Songs: "Genocyde Revealing Pt. 1", "Sikkha", "Lighter", "Delayed Reaction", "Souls For Sale", "One On The Line", "Most Of All", "Substitute Victim", "The Pissing Song", "Genocyde Revealing Pt. 2", "Colderside Of The Sun", "Cuts"

Background: Self produced, recorded, and mixed at Organized Rhyme Records from 2007-2009 and mastered by Chris Daniels at Brighton Recording/Mastering House in the United Kingdom, "Souls For Sale" is completely finished with album artwork and liner notes completed as well. So why hasn't it been released? Well, from conversations I've had with frontman Dann Pichette, the gist of it is that he wants to wait to book a CD release show before sending it to press, but hasn't been able to wrangle together the members of the band to reunite yet. Dann has kept fans posted here and there with commercials for the album and some new jam videos on his YouTube channel, but nothing finite about a "Souls For Sale" CD release has came up at all, even though it's been over THREE YEARS since recording began.

Current Release Status: I have no idea. We've heard rumours of it coming out soon for a few years now, and each time we got excited, nothing came of it. However, you CAN hear the entire album for free, all you have to do is ask the band to send you the mp3s and artwork by e-mailing their MySpace page! Also, I have uploaded (with Dann's blessing) the entire album onto the SMS YouTube channel, so check it out there too! The hopes of an official "Souls For Sale" release are NOT dead, so stay tuned in case something pops up!

Riverin's self-titled debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Attitude", "They Lost You", "A Cold Wind", "Deflower", "Valentine", "Raining In December"

Background: The new industrial hard rock project from former Dirty Virgin and Silver Dream bandmates Matt Hicks and Matt Clement, Riverin have slowly worked on their debut EP for much of 2010 at Matt Hicks' Quartertone Studios. The recording sessions for this self-produced EP have finished, and it was said to be released "soon" as of July. All six songs to be included on the EP are now featured on their MySpace page to stream for free! E-mail correspondence with Matt Clement in the fall detailed how the band were looking into the CD development process to release the album in time for a planned CD release show in the future featuring guest musicians, but there hasn't been any album-specific updates in a few weeks.

Current Release Status: Not sure, but things appear to be on the right track, given that the EP's tracks are all recorded. The way it's sounding to me, the release of the EP will likely tie in to their debut concert as a CD release show, but we haven't heard anything on a date range for it, so a concrete release date is up in the air. I'll keep you posted as I hear more!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sense of Truth's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Push & Pull", "Crawling", "Land of Greed", "Pieces of a Mirror"

Background: Sense of Truth began work on their debut EP in early February with Miguel Gauthier at Stereo Soul Studios, wrapping up the recording sessions in March. Again, Miguel kept fans up to date on the sessions at his Facebook page, with some updates on Sense of Truth's Facebook group as well. The songs were sent off to be mastered in late March, and it was announced that the EP would be sent off to print "very shortly" as of June 30th. The band originally hyped an "early summer 2010" release for the album, but we're obviously past that point. Songs from the EP are on rotation on Energy Rock Radio, numerous originals have been played at their concerts, and samples of three songs are posted on their MySpace page, but we haven't heard much from the band since their last concert on May 22nd, partly due to drummer Ryan Haryett's out of town work commitments. Miguel confirmed on September 9th that the artwork needed to be finished before sending it to press, though we've heard little publically since. Bassist Curtis Beauchamp has shared some cool release details about the EP with me before, but I won't post any of that here without online sourcing.

Current Release Status: I'd originally guessed that we would see this before Garden of Bedlam's album as it was recorded earlier and was shorter as a whole, but I'm second guessing that a bit. Honestly, with all the artwork issues and delays, I would not be surprised if this EP didn't come out for yet another few months, and at this point, guessing a date wouldn't help much. No matter what, when it comes out, it will deliver lots of great hard rock, and will be well worth the wait! Remember to hear previews of three songs at their MySpace page, and listen to Energy Rock Radio for your first taste of full songs from the EP!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Silver Dream's debut album

Rumoured Songs: "My Heart Stops", "Evangeline", "Sunshine", "Every Minute", "Baby I Love", "Talk To Me"

Background: Not a lot was known about the recording sessions and progress of Silver Dream's debut album, but what we did know was that they wanted to record the majority of their first album before playing live, instead of typically doing it the other way around. Former frontman Matthew Silver kept fans updated on his now-deactivated Facebook page through image files as to progress of recording. We did see one taste of their sessions, a YouTube upload of "My Heart Stops", in June. The quality of the recording wasn't bad either, so they knew what they were doing! Other songs were confirmed through image files and some solo performance videos on YouTube. However, since Matthew left the band in July to follow a religious path, most traces of Silver Dream vanished from the internet, and their debut show was cancelled, leaving their future in doubt.

Current Release Status: Personally, it doesn't look good. With Silver Dream's frontman, namesake, and driving force gone, I can't see the remaining members doing much with what was recorded. Matthew did announce that the band would still be active, with bassist Mike LaRue looking for a new singer, but what that means for the recordings is unknown at best. I'd like to see what was finished come out at some point, but if I were you, I wouldn't hold your breath for an official CD release, at least not in the form we heard earlier in the summer.

Sykotyk Rampage - "Genius Mushrooms With Thoughts Of Intellect" and "Genius Mushrooms With Thoughts Of Stupidity"

Rumoured Songs (for 1st album): "Parked", "Fear", "Sicked", "Text", "Sky", "Underhead", "Bubblie", "GDS", "Twisted", "Manure", "NT22PSDB", "Nobody"

Rumoured Songs (for 2nd album): "Running", "Legend, "Garden", "Metal", "Rain", "Parley", "Wait", "Shrooms", "Dynamite", "Acreage", "McDonalds", "Alright"

Background: Originally announced in their "Attack Of The Garage Bands" profile on The Barking Eye in June, "Genius Mushrooms With Thoughts Of Intellect" will be Sykotyk Rampage's 24th album. It was later announced in August that the album, originally a double release with 25 songs, would be split into two 12 song albums, with one song, "Silence", removed from the track listing that makes up the second album, "Genius Mushrooms With Thoughts Of Stupidity". Details on both albums, including songs and album covers, can be viewed at this location. Once again, Sykotyk Rampage recorded these new albums at River Front Recreation Studios, with sessions taking place at varying points over the latter half of 2010. These albums are part of the conceptual "Genius Mushroom" series which delves "into the realm of hallucinogenic musical brainscans." Despite Brian Cattapan's move to Sudbury, he will be a part of both albums, having recorded parts for both at recent trips back to town.

Current Release Status: The original announced release date for both was in December, and with no crash music in our hands, the release has obviously been pushed back. I figured there would be a delay to begin with, as the last few Sykotyk Rampage albums came out after the announced release dates. Their albums are known for being recorded and released pretty quickly compared to other local bands though. If I was gonna bet, I'd bet on a spring release for both, but who knows, maybe things will line up so they do get a release in the winter. You never know!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tym Morrison's second solo album

Rumoured Songs: "Moon Patrol", "Dungeons & Dragons", "Nag Hamedi", "The Reason Why", "The Dark Shred", "Song For Jen", "No Name", "Amy", "Lay It On The Line"

Background: I honestly don't know a lot about the background for Tym Morrison's second album, but he has posted samples of nine songs for his "next album" onto the music player on his official website! The songs are all of good quality, and feature Tym in familiarly good form! Information about recording sessions for his solo album are either very sparse or were made quite a while ago, so I don't know a lot about it, but the songs were likely self-recorded at Morrison Studio Productions with Tym on all instruments save for the programmed drums. That being said, concrete details about a release for this album haven't been made to my knowledge, but if something is said, you have my word that it will be on the SMS!

Current Release Status: I have absolutely no idea. I don't believe these songs were recently posted, so a release for this second solo album must be waiting for something to open up or happen before they can be pressed and sold. Hopefully Tym does release these songs on CD in the near future, cause the samples sound very promising! For now though, check out the above links to hear the posted samples!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Woods of Ypres - "Woods V: You Were The Light

Rumoured Songs: "You Were The Light", "Falling Apart"

Background: Recording for Woods of Ypres' fifth album took place from August 8th-22nd. The band's second album featuring the Madden brothers and first with Joel Violette, it was recorded with Miguel Gauthier at Stereo Soul Studios once again, and will feature just five tracks. Miguel's Facebook page kept fans updated on the sessions, along with Woods of Ypres' Facebook page, and a topic on Woods of Ypres' official forum. The full title, "Woods V: You Were The Light", was announced last fall, though a seasonal theme a'la their past releases isn't known yet. Initial release plans from during Woods' fake breakup suggested just a limited vinyl & online release of the album, but this should change with last fall's news that Woods of Ypres has signed a label deal with Earache Records! Two songs were later premiered on a December episode of the metal podcast The Governor's Ball for the first time. This album was originally scheduled for an early 2011 release on Earache Records, but it was recently announced that Earache will first reissue "Woods IV: The Green Album" in March, with "Woods V" to follow later in the year, so it could be a while yet before "Woods V" is in our hands. For now, check out the two unveiled full songs at this location! (between 20 and 34 minutes of the file)

Current Release Status: Well, if the plans are to hold off on "Woods V" until "The Green Album" hits stores again, then I wouldn't expect a release in the first half of the year, lest one of the two albums gets lost in the shuffle. I'd put my money on a release in the late summer or early fall for "Woods V". Time will tell though, as this is shaping up to be a huge year for Woods of Ypres, with no shortage of news in sight!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And so concludes our latest "Where Are The New Albums?" post! We could have a release tomorrow, and who knows when other albums above could be released, so be sure to keep an eye out! We'll likely have a new news post tonight at some point as well, so stay tuned for that, and much more! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison) And Some New Local Metal Videos!!

Well guys, it's finally time for our first news post of 2011! We've had to shove a lot of things back lately due to my string of concert reviews and our New Years specific posts, but things are slowly returning to normal, starting with tonight's post mostly focusing on newly posted videos! But first, we have a concert preview/LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so here's what you should know!

You could probably surmise this from past posts, but Tym Morrison's weekly arrangement at Foggy Notions will continue into 2011, starting with an acoustic solo show TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this got lost amongst my concert reviews and such. This is the only officially confirmed solo date from Tym so far this year, but I imagine that the concert calendar on his official website will be updated sooner or later to reflect at least his next January shows. Until then, I won't officially confirm his next shows, but I would expect him to be back at Foggy's on January 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th, not counting his planned arrangement at The Big Cheese in Heyden, which begins on Friday. For now though, if you need something to do tomorrow night, then head out to see Tym in the first local hard rock concert of 2011! There is no cover charge tomorrow, you must be 19 to enter, and Tym hits the stage at 10:00 PM! Should be a good concert, as usual, with Tym's impressive solo repetoire sure to get people's attentions tomorrow night! For more information, check the above links and the official Facebook event page, and for a video preview, here's Tym covering Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" last month at Foggy's!

Now for some more videos from local bands from the last little while, and we'll start with one from last night's New Years Eve metal show at Foggy Notions! I'd have loved to have been there, but hey, I can't be the only person in town who was dragged into family functions instead. This is a live video from Sativa Rose's set, as filmed by bassist Adam Veale's dad John, and uploaded onto his YouTube channel. It's of their live cover of Megadeth's "Lucretia", and like some of their past videos, this one also features a guest singer! Rather than Jason Roy from Havadder or Tym Morrison, they were joined by this concert's promoter (and veteran local guitarist) Rich Moreland! Good quality as always, and I forgot to mention this before, but did anyone else notice that the wooden railing from the stage is gone at Foggy's? Sativa Rose do a great job on this cover, Andrew looks particularly dapper in his suit, but the vocals are very hard to make out. I don't know if they're low in the mix or whatever, but it is noticeable. Still, this is a great cover, check it out below!

Next up, here's the latest from new local death metal quartet State of Misery! Their Facebook group has been getting supplanted with new photos and information lately, including two new videos from recent jam sessions! The first video, which sounds like an original, was uploaded by Ashley Lacasse, and the second, a cover of Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell", was uploaded by Joey Bourgeois. Both were taken from what looks like the same jam. These are the best quality footage of State of Misery that we've seen so far, and are pretty impressive! The first song sounds pretty good, brutal and tight, while the Pantera cover is pretty good on it's own, but I don't know if Steve Rhodes' growling suits the song. Maybe it'll grow on me, but it's not horrible! I can't embed Facebook videos on here on their own, so click the above links for the latest video footage of State of Misery, as they're a very promising young band! Also, it was brought to my attention on their Facebook group earlier today that guitarist Ray Cowan's Ibanez guitar disappeared at some point since their show last night. Stolen or otherwise, if you have any information that could help get it back to Ray, message him on Facebook or call 206-3516. I'm fairly certain it's the guitar with the grey/black design that you saw him play at their live shows and in the above videos. Help if you can, and I'll have more from State of Misery as it comes in!

And finally, here's a new video from a local sports personality that features a sountrack from a local metal band! If you're a fan of mixed martial arts, you may be aware of Brent "The Professor" Fryia, a featherweight fighter from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He's 4-2 so far in his career, and has fought for organizations like King Of The Cage and Deep since his professional debut in 2008. He's a very good fighter, but how is this SMS material? Well, this new highlight video on Brent features "Lock Me In" by Lion Ride as the backing music! Great choice, and it seems to fit his MMA career well, as in "locking in" submission holds! Check it out below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for another double post day TOMORROW, including our next "Where Are The New Albums?" update post and more news! Thanks everyone!

2011: A Preview, And What To Watch Out For

Happy New Year, everyone! Hopefully 2011 is as great as 2010 hopefully was for all of you, if not better! Like last year, I wanted to devote a post to some of the things to look out for in the coming year. This is by no means comprehensive or complete, but 2011 has a lot of things in the works, so it's worth devoting a bit of time on, just like last year! So let's take a look at what we know is coming this year, and what to expect!

In terms of major concerts in either of the twin Saults, the only metal/hard rock ones that we can reasonably confirm at the moment are both at The Dreammaker's Theater at Kewadin Casino. The first announced one will feature a huge package of radio hard rock and post-grunge bands, including Buckcherry, Papa Roach, My Darkest Days, and Bleeker Ridge on March 14th! Allstar Promotions are hoping this concert will be a huge success, and knowing the success and popularity of these bands, I don't see any real reason why this won't be one of the biggest hard rock shows of 2011! The other confirmed major concert across the river at The Dreammaker's Theater is exactly one month later, and it involves Philadelphia hair metal legends Cinderella! They'll come to Kewadin Casino less than a year after another Cinderella (the play) was featured there. This time, it actually is the band, so if you want some live glam metal, you know where to be on April 14th! More details are likely to come in on both shows, but if you want to buy tickets, you can buy them at Kewadin Casino's ticketing page, at their box office, or by phone if you call 1-800-KEWADIN! As for other major concerts in the metal and hard rock vein, no others are known yet, but Allstar Promotions always have something up their sleeves, and you never know when The Essar Center will book something heavy, so be sure to keep an eye out!

For other concerts this year, we know more than we knew last year at this point, so here's what's scheduled! Hempfest returns this August after a year's relocation, with Frightlight and Half Past already among the confirmed acts, so if you want to support marijuana culture or enjoy some great music, head down to Ophir in August! Motley Crue tribute band Crued also return to Sault Ontario on April 30th for a high energy set at The Canadian Nightclub! The rest of the known shows on this side in 2011 revolve around the bands who frequently hit the bars for weekend sets, including a handful of Turner Up gigs at Docks Riverfront Grill through February and Tym Morrison's weekly arrangements at Foggy Notions and The Big Cheese. Expect more to be announced from both bands, including more weekend dates from That's Chester and many more shows from many other local acts as the year wears on! Sault Michigan concerts are harder to verify, but a ton at The Rapids Lounge at Kewadin Casino have been confirmed for almost the entire year, including numerous new dates from Monkey's Uncle, Splitshot, Peril, River Witch, and Driven! Expect shows from some of those bands at venues like The Bear & Dondee Lanes too, among others, but verification of those isn't simple. Add The Darwin Project's show on February 19th in Rudyard too, and you have a big year of concerts across the river already!

Check the SMS concert listings on your left and right for full confirmed dates that I currently know of! This doesn't even count the possible shows for 2011 that we can assume or guess will happen, so here's a couple more prospective metal concerts to keep an eye out for! Kewadin Casino had talked of possibly holding another major summer festival following the success of last year's 25th Anniversary Festival, and you know some metal bands could be on that! Other possibilities include both of the stages at Rotaryfest, the Bellevue Park concert series, the Sugar Island Music Festival, Oktoberfest & Sidewalk Sales in Sault Michigan, any possible battles of the bands, the concerts connected to The Guitar Studio rock camp, and (although not concerts) open mic and jam nights at various local bars and concert spots!

You could also throw possible CD release parties on there, as there are a pile of local metal and hard rock albums that have either begun recording sessions, or are in line for releases in the very near future! After a slower than usual 2010 for local album releases, hopefully the floodgates open in 2011! We'll go over some of these in full detail tomorrow for our January "Where Are The New Albums?" update post, but check out all the bands who have albums announced, partly recorded, or finished without release: April Eyes, Bring The Fallen, Garden of Bedlam, Gates of Winter, Half Past, Lion Ride, Mike Haggith, No Arrow, Riverin, Sense of Truth, Silver Dream, Sykotyk Rampage, Tym Morrison, and Woods of Ypres, and that doesn't even count certain bands' plans for multiple releases this year! Not to mention, bands like The Bear Hunters, As It Stands, State of Misery, and others have new original material that may or may not have release plans down the road as well! In Sault Michigan, Clownsack's new EP is still in the works for a release, along with Bad Side's retrospective DVD, and with new material from Elipzis and Half A Man (among others), you never know what could be announced across the river this year! We'll elaborate more on many of these albums tomorrow!

There, hopefully this is a good look at what we know and might expect for 2011, but this just scratches the immediate surface. As 2011 rolls along, much more will come out, and as I hear about it, I'll have it right here! I should have a new news post TONIGHT, so stay tuned for that, as well as our "Where Are The New Albums" post tomorrow, a revision to our current poll, and more! Thanks everyone, and once again, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
