Project 421 & Friends Concert Review!!

Before we begin this post, we have an apology for a missed show, as Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock cover trio Banned also played a set last night at the Jack Passmore Grandstand at Kinross Speedpark following the Memorial Invitational race. The show was only confirmed on Banned's Facebook page at supper time yesterday, missing our radar at the time, so our profuse apologies for missing this one, hopefully it was as big a hit as Friday's show! Now, here's our first concert review on the site in two months (good to be back!), as I was in attendance for the Project 421 show at The Canadian Nightclub on Friday night! Good attendance early for this one, though it did plummet before Project 421's set, floating around two dozen fans at that point. And no, the axe throwing competition cage(?!) on the far wall didn't get in the road of the concert, but how's that for an attraction? Live705 nicely handled sound for the evening, but how did the bands do?

Opening Friday's concert was the long awaited return of local hard rock quintet Skeyes of Seven for the first time since 2015, ending their second two year+ long stage hiatus, and I'm glad to say that they sounded great for their latest comeback! After the Eye of Horus concert & another unannounced show fell through, the guys finally got their moment in the sun with a high impact set that was half devoted to songs from their yet-to-be-released debut EP, with the remainder including new songs "Differences" & "Treading Water", plus covers of Audioslave and Mastodon songs. The latter was particularly surprising, but with 2 years of jam time and preparation, they had everything down fine! This was their first show with new rhythm guitarist Kyle Sweet, who asserted himself fine in their set (and had awesome shoes), while established band members didn't seem to lose a step either, including a strong vocal performance from Cory Murchison, reliable bass work from Al Fletcher and solid drumming from John Mignacca.

It's great to have Skeyes of Seven back, and while it remains to be seen when we'll see them on stage next (not to mention, when we'll finally see "Stare at the Sky" on sale), here's hoping we're not waiting until 2019 for their next gig, as they definitely made some new fans on Friday night!

The middle band on Friday was alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback in their first of two shows in under 24 hours (look for Oh!No Festival fallout when it rolls in), and they pumped out another strong set of original punk songs for fans to bridge the gap between the night's heavier acts! If you've seen A Dire Setback this year, their set won't have held many surprises, with familiar originals like "Nightmares", "Everlasting Despair", and "Faded" populating their timeslot, as well as their "Counting Stars" cover. Of course, the guys delivered musically as usual, with Matt Quinn's bass (and sound) work coming naturally, and Chris Nielsen was his regular sparkplug self on guitar, but Larry Babic's vocals did sound noticeably rougher in the second half of their set, with higher notes not coming as easily. Strong set overall though from A Dire Setback, and hopefully they had a great time in Leeburn!

And finally, your headliners were classic metal quartet Project 421 in their third show and second headlining date of 2017, and they sufficiently rocked remaining fans with a hard hitting blast of 1980s metal covers and select originals! Along with Alice Cooper, Saxon, and Judas Priest renditions, the guys also moved back to covering Diamond Head after opening for them last, while originals "No One Rides For Free" & "Into The Darkness" also made appearances. Blair Burch's singing voice continues to gain strength and confidence compared to what I've heard in the past, and he and Frank McGillivray kept the power guitar rolling nicely throughout their set, with Daniel Horton and Chris Thompson maintaining a solid rhythm themselves! There were some occasional hiccups, and it's a shame that more people didn't stick around, but 421 have restored their spot in the local scene with ease and retro flair, and here's hoping for much more from them soon!

Overall, this was a fun concert with lots of talented artists, including a big return to kick off the night, and hopefully there's more to come from these acts soon! You can check out our photos from this show at this link or via our Facebook page, and as for videos, here's Skeyes of Seven playing "Treading Water", A Dire Setback playing "Wasting Away", and Project 421 covering Iron Maiden's "Powerslave"!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Jock Tears & Stiffler's Mom), "Trading Faces" Split Details, And The Loud & Proud Preview!!

I am back home from a trip visiting family, and while I wasn't expecting to have a second post on the SMS today, I came home to SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, so here's what you should know on those, as well as one more new show, an upcoming split's content and release details, and a preview for one more shows this weekend!

Local classic/hard rock cover trio Stiffler's Mom will return to The Esquire Club for headlining concerts TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Profuse apologies for the short notice, these shows were only announced on the band's Facebook page this morning, and I was on the road back to the Soo for much of the afternoon. After taking a nearly two month break from public concerts, these will be Greg, Mike, and Jon's first advertised shows since their Rotaryfest Stage 1 sets back in July, and first at the Second Line West venue in three months. Despite the very short online notice, this will be another fun weekend of hard rocking cover favourites for fans and Esquire regulars alike, so don't miss Stiffler's Mom's first shows of the fall season TONIGHT & TOMORROW! Expect 10:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 19+ age limits each night. See above for more details, and here's Stiffler's Mom live!

Next up, here's another new show with lots of advance notice, as Vancouver pop punk quartet Jock Tears will make their local concert debut with a headlining date at The Gore Street Cafe on Thursday, October 5th! This gender-equal group meld pop punk with indie and folk rock pretty seamlessly, and they should be a fine fit at the laundromat next month, so keep Jock Tears' short but sweet originals in mind locally next month! The opening act will be local indie/hard rock quartet Bizotic in their first date of the fall season and first Gore Street Cafe stop since July, and they're a solid choice to kick off the evening's action on October 5th, so don't be late for their set! This ALL AGES show is once again a "pay what you can" event, as usual for the landromat, but there is a suggested admission fee of $10 in place. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and don't miss the indie-tinged punk and hard rock action next month at The Gore Street Cafe!

Also today, here's new details on the AlgomA/Shit Liver covers split album and joint local concert at The New American Pub on Monday, October 2nd! In terms of "Trading Faces", the whole split saw it's online release as scheduled on Tuesday via both AlgomA's and Shit Liver's Bandcamp pages (each band uploaded the whole thing), and the split is available on both pages via a "name your price" model, so consider paying an amount for their hard work! Of course, cassettes will have a firm cost to be announced, likely on September 17th when the physical release was previously teased, but no later than tour kickoff day on the 22nd. AlgomA's Bandcamp page also confirms the recording dates and studios for each half of the split, each appearing to have been self-recorded at home studios earlier this year, though Shit Liver's version of "Fell Down A Well" sounds like the 2015 version (at least, the first half.) Full tour details can be found at the tour's Facebook event page, whose related links confirm that familiar acts like Buried Out Back and Uncle Ray will join the two local bands on specific dates.

As for the October 2nd date at The New A, what can we now learn about that event? Well, the opening acts will be local death metal standouts The Bear Hunters and extreme metal quartet Winkstinger, who are excellent choices to open the night! The show will start at 9:00 PM flat, and there is a $7 cover charge, not including tapes. Visit that show's Facebook event page for full local details, but buy the "Trading Faces" split at the above links if you can't wait for the tapes, and look for our review of it in the coming weeks!

Finally for today, here's one more concert preview for this weekend, as local alternative/hard rock trio The Din will return to The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Center THIS SUNDAY as musical entertainment for this year's Loud & Proud kick-off event for the Soo's fourth annual Pridefest! The first of six shows in The Din's farewell run of concerts prior to their planned breakup next month,  their set on Sunday is in support of the Sault Pride Community's annual LGBTQ awareness and support festival, and their first of two shows for this year's Pridefest, joining their outdoor family picnic set at the locks in two weeks. Of course, fans may remember seeing the former Mike Haggith & The Din rock the Bushplane Museum in their acid jam days back in 2013, so it's great to see their tighter and more formal sound hit this venue one last time on Sunday, and for a great cause! Their set will be at 2:00 PM, as sandwiched between local performer and singer Tim Murphy's drag show at 1:00 & 3:00 PM, while there will also be children's entertainment and vendors on site.

Events kick off at 12:00 PM on Sunday, and this is a FREE & ALL AGES event, which should be a great way to kick off Pridefest, so visit the official Facebook event page for full details on Loud & Proud, and here's The Din live!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for our review of TONIGHT'S Project 421 concert at The Canadian next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The Din), Their Impending Breakup, And The Oh!No 2017 Music Festival Preview!!

This longer-than-usual news post is devoted to two extended topics: Our preview of a massive music festival in our area tomorrow night, and leading off, lots of LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS relating to a prominent local band whose days as an active presence in the scene are sadly numbered. Here's what you should know on this Friday morning!

Local alternative/hard rock trio The Din have announced that they will be disbanding following a farewell headlining concert (and CD release show) at LopLops Lounge on Saturday, October 21st. As unfortunately announced on Tuesday via their Facebook page and related video below, The Din confirmed their impending split, saying that this was an "incredibly difficult decision to make", but frontman Mike Haggith says in the video that "there isn't very much opportunity (to) get all the living done that we want to if we keep going like this", with Mike's likely work-related relocation out of the Soo a contributing factor. However, the news isn't all bad, as they will release their second and final studio album at LopLops on October 21st, with a limited print run of 50 CDs for the occasion (no word on price or Bandcamp availability yet), with Mike noting that they returned to where they started to record it at Pretoria Hill Productions, presumably with earlier demos now being the final copies.

This isn't all for The Din's fall plans, as they will still play at THIS SUNDAY's Loud & Proud event at The Bushplane Museum (look for it's preview in our next post), but The Din also have four more shows to play in the interim! As first announced in the comments of the video below, they'll play a show next week at Sault College's campus lounge Odeno (basically The Outback's replacement) on Thursday, September 14th, in what may be a farewell/thank you event from aviation graduate Mike to his alma mater, but no details are out on this event beyond a 7:00 PM start time. A cosplay optional family picnic set for Sault Pridefest is also advertised for Saturday, September 23rd down at the Soo Locks, with their set planned for 11:00 AM (yes, AM!) The Din will also play a presumed solo concert at The Canadian Nightclub on Friday, September 29th at 9:00 PM, while their last opening set will be on Monday, October 11th when they open for Niagara Falls indie/pop rock trio James Blonde at LopLops Lounge. They're not going gentle into that good night!

Of the four new shows, the Pride picnic will be ALL AGES but the rest are 19+. The LopLops show will likely have a cover charge of at least $5, but the rest likely have no cover. See above for details where available on them, and look for our Loud & Proud preview soon! The news of The Din's breakup is very sudden and disappointing, but like the band Haggith's initial breakup announcement from 4 years prior, at least we have advance notice and more chances to see Mike, Tammy, and Brandan on stage before the big farewell and CD release on October 21st! In terms of that show, expect a 9:30 PM start time and 19+ age limit, but there has been no announcement yet on admission fees. As well, an opening band is expected to be named, and advance singles from the album will be posted online in the lead-up to the event. I hope everyone stays active in music after next month, be it in solo form or new bands, but enjoy The Din while you can, visit the official Facebook event page for more on the farewell show, and here's The Din's video announcement on their breakup!

Finally for today, here's our extended preview of TOMORROW'S Oh!No 2017 Music Festival in nearby Leeburn, Ontario! A spiritual successor to promoters Six, Two, Oh.'s prior Das Bunkerfest event, this end-of-summer festival will see thirteen bands and one DJ cram into Robbie's Church (truly a former church turned residence) in nearby Leeburn for a day full of musical intensity from out of town and local bands alike, including a few new confirmations, so who can you expect tomorrow? The nominal headlining act is DJ Seith with some night-capping turntable mixes at 1:00 AM, but in terms of bands, promoters impressively managed to get all 5 touring bands in the closing slots. Those bands are Toronto country/indie rock band Run Coyote at 11:30 PM, Barrie all-female punk quartet (and local headliners from June) Beaver Slap at 10:30 PM, Sudbury punk trio Lightmares at 9:30 PM, and two bands who played here last year, namely Hamilton punk rockers Artificial Dissemination at 8:30 PM & Thunder Bay desert rock group The Franquilizers at 7:15 PM.

Local bands will include new indie/hard rock trio Vol. at 6:30 PM, punk/metal quintet Jack Spades at 5:45 PM, drone/ambient rock trio Pointless (replacing a planned solo set from frontman Bill Priddle) at 4:30 PM, and alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback (in their second show in under 24 hours) at 3:45 PM. Prior to one of two mid-show intermissions, the opening acts will be funk/hard rock quartet The Elements at 2:45 PM, Brent Ellis' new project Slumshine at 2:00 PM, reunited extreme metal rockers Winkstinger at 1:15 PM, and indie/punk rock trio Handsome Sandwich (in their first show in 2 months) opening the festival at 12:30 PM. Notably, both The Elements & Handsome Sandwich are late confirmations for the festival lineup, with one/both replacing doom metal trio AlgomA for unannounced reasons, possibly due to their promotional duties for Oh!No 2017. Great to see the new bands the bill, and don't miss AlgomA on October 2nd! Six, Two, Oh. will also be filming the days bands, though no word yet on what form their public postings will be in.

A bonfire, outdoor activities, vendors, food from The Gore Street Cafe, and on-site parking and camping will be available for festival patrons, so feel free to stay awhile and enjoy the festival's entire scope tomorrow! No age limit is stated for the fest, and tickets are $25 via the cafe, The Rad Zone, Case's Music, Northland Music, Coch's Corner, and Big Guns Barbershop, while you can also get hooked up from local performers, and presumably at the door, while directions to the festival (just outside of Bruce Mines) and extra details can be found at the official Facebook event page. Also, while early shuttle bus plans were cancelled due to cost concerns, promoters are encouraging prospective attendees to consider ride-sharing or cab rentals to get to Leeburn for the show tomorrow if unable to drive there yourselves, so you do have options to get to the Oh!No Festival! This presumably inaugural festival promises to deliver loads of entertaining music from many genres!

The unique setting in an old church outside of town should provide an intriguing backdrop to all of this action, so whether you can stay all day, can camp beyond, or can only see a few bands, definitely consider a trip to Leeburn TOMORROW if at all possible for this ambitious festival! See above for more details on tomorrow's action, here's a preview video of Beaver Slap live, and stay tuned for more news on the site tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Banned & Tym Morrison) And Weekend Concert Previews!!

Before we get into this weekend concert preview post (sans the Oh!No Festival, which will get an extended preview tomorrow), note that I am well aware of a major local band's announced farewell/CD release show next month, and that will be a featured story in an upcoming post, perhaps tomorrow's, so don't worry, it's coming! Now, here's what you should know for this weekend's non-Leeburn hard rock concerts, starting with some SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock cover trio Banned will play a rare hometown show TOMORROW NIGHT when they rock... the Jack Passmore Grandstand at Kinross Speedpark?! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via it's official Facebook event page on Tuesday, with the band even confirming that this was a "new booking" on their Facebook page. The unusual setting will see Banned provide musical entertainment after practice wraps up for Kinross Speedpark's 12th annual Memorial Invitational race, which is the Crazy Eight Racing Series' season finale, so if you love local stock car racing, get down to the West Fair Road race track this weekend! Alex, Don, and Wayne will play their fan-favorite covers to end day one of the weekend's events TOMORROW, and they should end things with a bang before the racing proper begins on Saturday!

Presumably all ages, Banned will take to the outdoor grandstand stage at 9:00 PM TOMORROW, and while admission for the races is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and free for kids 11 and under, I can't confirm if that applies to practice day and Banned's set. For more details on this weekend's entertainment, musical or automotive, check the above links, and for a preview, here's Banned live!

Next up, prolific Sault Ontario hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will continue his long-term arrangement at Gliss Steak & Seafood with matinee shows TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY, but he will also return to new local bar Room 21 (above Low & Slow on Albert Street West) TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, and Mark's Breakfast Plus at the Market Mall for one night only THIS TUESDAY! Again, apologies for the short notice on the Room 21 and Mark's shows, these were only announced via their respective Facebook event pages (linked here and here) on Saturday. Now playing six concerts in six days, Tym's busy schedule sees him playing at two newer local businesses over the next while that he's previously played at, with TOMORROW's Room 21 show helping serve as the kick-off event for the bar's official logo, so keep that specific angle in mind along with this very full weekend of shows, including three downtown matinees as expected, and the second Room 21 night on SATURDAY!

No word on why Tym's not playing at Mark's on Monday, but keep his special matinee show there on TUESDAY for more acoustic hard rock action this month! The Gliss & Mark's shows are 6:00 PM affairs with no announced cover charges or age limits (but remember that these are restaurants), while the Room 21 shows are 19+ events at 10:00 PM with no cover. Click here and visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's Tym Morrison live!

Moving to entirely previously announced concerts, we'll next head to The Canadian Nightclub, where local classic metal quartet Project 421 will play their second headlining concert of the year and third total TOMORROW NIGHT! Still riding high off of last month's Diamond Head show, this will be another solid opportunity for fans to take in 421's 1980s-centric brand of metal covers and select originals, so don't miss out on this one for another nostalgic mindtrip! As previously announced, local alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback will open in their first show in almost a month and first since the recent Live705 cancellations, so keep their return in mind for more of their strong originals! However, a third band was added on Monday, as hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven will make their long awaited return to the local stage tomorrow! After a 2+ year hiatus from concerts, this will serve as both their re-introducton to the scene and their live debut with new rhythm guitarist Kyle Sweet, so come see how Skeyes of Seven sound in their big return tomorrow!

And yes, A Dire Setback will also be playing at Saturday's Oh!No Festival in Leeburn, which will be previewed tomorrow, so keep watch for it then! Tomorrow's show has a 10:00 PM start time, is a 19+ event, and has NO COVER CHARGE, so there's all the more reason to come check out this blast of metal, hard rock, and punk action tomorrow! Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's Project 421 live!

Finally for today's previews, we'll head back across the river for the latest shows from Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63, who are slated to rock The Northern Pines Lounge at the Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Keeping up their recent trend of monthly shows at the St. Ignace Kewadin branch, this weekend's shows should provide another solid opportunity for fans to take in the Monkey's Uncle successors' classic and hard rock cover selections, so keep these ones in mind if you're in the E.U.P.! Note that these shows haven't been recently plugged by Highway 63 online, but were among their shows in their schedule post on their Facebook page from January. Also, note that most of Highway 63 have recently formed a side project band (I assume) named Cousin Eddie that played a few shows this summer, and feature singer/guitarist Greg Smith in place of Henry Switzer.

No word on Cousin Eddie's genre range or online pages yet, but don't bypass them if you see them scheduled somewhere locally! This weekend's Highway 63 shows have no announced cover charges, 21+ age limits, and 9:00 PM start times. Check the above links for more details on their first shows of the fall, and for a preview, here's Highway 63 live!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for our Oh!No 2017 Music Festival preview and more tomorrow! Thanks everyon

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The 3 Day Millionaires), New Videos, And More Updates!!

We're back with a new news post for this Labour Day, so what can you find here? Some assorted recent updates, new videos from two talented local hard rock acts, and leading off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next month, so here's what you should know!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires are advertised to return to The Canadian Nightclub for one night only on Friday, September 22nd! Though not yet advertised online by the band themselves (who usually announce gigs in their preceding week), the show is featured on The Canadian's marquee board on the side seen when driving towards Great Northern Road. Unless they have a short notice show over the next two weekends, this will be The Millionaires' first show since making their solo Canadian debut last month, and it's great to see that this venue is continuing their return of cover bar bands on weekends... well, Fridays! As was the case last month, expect no cover charge, a 9:00 PM start time, and a 19+ age limit on the 22nd. See above for more details when they come in, specifically & presumably in two weeks, for The 3 Day Millionaires' upcoming evening of often heavy covers!

Next up, here's some new videos, including our first look at new local indie/hard rock trio Vol. (well, unless you've seen them live already!) Posted to their Facebook page on Thursday, it's a 31 second jam session clip on both a vertical & Dutch camera angle, apparently of the end of a song, and while you don't hear all that much given the length, it has a heavier and faster pace that is reminiscent of frontman Steve Edwards' recent band work. I'm curious to hear more from Vol., which you can do at the Oh!No 2017 Music Festival THIS SATURDAY in Leeburn, but give their first video a look below!

Also today, local funk/hard rock instrumental improv group Gianni Gagoots have lots of new videos to share, as YouTube user Savanna Dee filmed their set at last month's Northern Vibe Festival in Ophir for uploads on her channel last week! Completely titled for the first time that I've seen in online video postings, she filmed the sauce masters playing  "Black Socks & Sandals", "Groove Is In The Heart" by Deee-Lite (albeit vertically filmed), James Brown's "Funky President (People It's Bad)", David Bowie's "Fame" in two parts (the second half is here), the extended jam "Plastic On The Furniture" in two parts (here & here), and the finale, including Gianni Gagoots' polka?! There seems to be perpetual glare from the sun on the stage, helping render both drummers nearly invisible, but these are well recorded otherwise! Low fan turnout close to the stage, but these are predictably fun jams, and from what I can hear, the vocals on covers are either sampled or excellent impersonations. Give Savanna's newest videos a look above & below!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by

  • Jeremy Hannah's new SaultMusicScene promotion agency will finally host it's first concert on Friday, September 15th, namely a customer appreciation event at The Upper Deck Lounge above The Canadian Nightclub. The event will solely feature country acts (The Bearded Lounge and Leslie Cook), but it's great to see Jeremy back promoting events following his Canada Day cancellation, so click here for details on this event if you're up for some country action, free snacks, and a door prize draw!
  • Local promoters Live705's planned Garbageface/Pseudo-headlined Halloween concert at The Canadian Nightclub on October 28th has been cancelled, as per the deletion of it's Facebook event page yesterday. A reason for it's cancellation wasn't announced, but it's the second scheduled event from Live705 to be cancelled in the past two weeks, joining last month's Eye of Horus show, and no other concerts of theirs are currently scheduled. Hopefully nothing too serious is up in the Live705/A Dire Setback camp, and that we see the promoters and band out there again soon!
  • Barring sudden public activity, we'll be moving former Bear Hunters guitarist Mike Vincent's solo project to our inactive band links tomorrow, as he has not posted a public update since September 5th of last year, when he uploaded his most recent original song "Phases of Pain" to his Bandcamp page (he did not launch a solo Facebook page to go with it at the time.) Mike's a talented artist that was showing lots of growth in his recent original material, and hopefully he revisits or or full band work again when the time is right!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates this week! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? (September 2017 Update)

Here's our first monthly feature post of this September, as we're once again asking "Where Are The New Albums?" As we do every month, we're spotlighting the current release statuses and details on upcoming and at least partially recorded albums from 13 local metal, hard rock, or punk bands, in order to see where they are and when we might see them on shelves1 This month's installment is mostly in a holding pattern, but with three updated entries (as noted with the title in italics), so where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AlgomA & Shit Liver - Trading Faces

Rumoured Songs (A): "Why Should I Care?" (Dead Mouth cover), "Great Dane" (Kittens cover), "Fabricated Nonsense" (Shit Liver cover)

Rumoured Songs (S): "Homeo-Apathy" (Leftover Crack cover), "Hitch Hiker" (Macabre cover), "Blame It On God" (Deicide cover), "Lines On A Map" (Antischism cover), "Socialized Death Sentence"(Dystopia cover), "Fell Down A Well" (AlgomA cover)

Background: No strangers to releasing split albums with out-of-town based bands on old school formats after sharing vinyl records with Chronobot & Hooded Menace, local doom metal trio AlgomA surprisingly announced in May that their fourth release and third split would be a cassette tape shared with local/St. Catharine's grindcore trio Shit Liver, to be released through AlgomA's old label Deadbeat Media. The split's title and cover artwork (again done by Adam Geyer) were unveiled on AlgomA's Facebook page last month, with Shit Liver's Facebook page unveiling more complete details a few weeks later, particularly that the split will be covers-only, with each band also tackling the other for one track. This will be Shit Liver's second release following their 2014 self-titled CD, not counting the Gnarwhal/Gizzard split from 2016, which isn't officially under their name.

Current Release Status: Shit Liver's above announcement confirmed that "Trading Faces" will be released digitally on Bandcamp THIS TUESDAY, with it's physical cassette release coming two weeks later on September 17th, and tapes will be available during their joint Ontario/Montreal tour this month, including the finale here at The New American Pub on October 2nd. Hopefully this all sticks, as despite the lack of newer originals, this split is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing local releases of 2017, so keep tabs on the digital and physical releases this month!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Bear Hunters - The Dead Testament

Rumoured Songs: "The Void", "The Omen", "Neckbreaker", "I Fear No God", "Servitude", "Transcend Judgement", "For Glory", "The Wrath Of Angmar", "The Dying Den", "The Dead Testament", "Deception" (bonus re-recording), "The Forest of Forests" (bonus track)

Background: In tentative planning since 2014 under this title, local death metal quintet The Bear Hunters have been playing songs intended for their second full length CD for a few years now, but only fully began recording sessions for "The Dead Testament" on October 2nd, 2015. Following a brief fundraising campaign and the gradual unveiling of song titles, the band have been working with producer Dustin Jones at Mission Control Studios, and have shared sporadic updates on their Instagram page. Like on 2014's "Eternal Hibernation", rhythm guitarist Josh Stephney has recorded parts for the album despite living in Southern Ontario, but it's not yet clear on how bonus tracks will be handled.

Current Release Status: The Bear Hunters haven't given any firm timetables for when to expect "The Dead Testament" in stores, but as of November 5th, the band had finished all recording sessions except vocals & lead guitar for 4 tracks, and "finishing touches" were to blame for the delays in finishing the CD. The band is aiming for a more professional sound and release for their sophomore effort, but an optimistic late-summer release has came and gone, and while there have been private online updates since, the band has not issued a public update on the album yet this year. Keep an eye out for updates when and if they come in!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Electric Church's debut album

Rumoured Songs: "Muddy Waters", "Ain't Got None", "Carey Baby", "Take Me Away", "Cross the Line"

Background: Fast rising young blues/hard rock trio Electric Church evolved from Jimi Hendrix covers in 2016 to primarily original material in 2017, and punctuated that on May 12th when they announced on their Facebook page that they were "working up some new songs... for the album!!!" It was confirmed around that time that they were recording material at Mission Control Studios with producer Dustin Jones, who shared a picture on their Facebook page confirming Electric Church's presence. However, direct updates have not followed publically, and the band has not posted an online update in over two months.

Current Release Status: No clue, but Electric Church are a very talented band who play beyond their years, and no matter how long this takes, the album should be of solid quality when it finally comes out! Stay tuned for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Elements' debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Liar", "G20", "Triple H", "The Rut", "I Need A Friend"

Background: Arguably better known for their funk, ska, and hard rock covers, local quartet The Elements have been adding original material to their sets since last year, and have since publically confirmed earlier teases that they are working on a debut EP. Frontman Rob Speers has confirmed in personal conversations last spring that they have been working in studio on the release, which will have at least 5 tracks, and I believe it's being self-recorded, but further public updates are minimal at best. It's also not known if they'll employ any guest performers, such as Jonas Gasperas (who may be their permanent drummer now) and saxophonist Josh Norling, a frequent presence in recent months.

Current Release Status: At this stage, I have no idea, but Rob sounded like things were going well in studio. That said, these were largely personal conversations a year ago, and the band hasn't acknowledged album recording sessions publically in recent months, so we'll have to see if updates come out on it in 2017!

Gates of Winter - Perihelion

Rumoured Songs: "The Stars Call My True Name", "Edin Na Zu", "Dimensions", "Time Warp", "Wormhole Mechanics", "Prometheus", "Eta Carinae"

Background: Despite a hiatus from live concerts lasting almost 9 years, Gates of Winter never broke up, and are slowly working on their follow-up to 2008's "Lux Aeterna". Updates have sporadically been made since early 2010, via numerous uploads, teaser postings, and general hype for the recording sessions, though prior release forecasts haven't been realized, it was retracted from CD to EP length, and most preview media has since been taken down as the band perfected the CD's final content. While Sault native Jon Morrison was announced as the album's drummer in late 2010, it has since been confirmed that "Perihelion" will feature programmed drums. After taking a over a year's hiatus from public activity, Gates of Winter resurfaced in July with new band artwork and hints that they have "been making incredible strides, and are very excited to pull back the curtain."

Current Release Status: Personal commitments and the like have slowed things down incredibly, but in the band's most recent preview video (featuring audio samples), Gates of Winter hinted that work was winding down on "Perihelion", including noting that "the silence ends soon". Good art takes time, and knowing Gates of Winter's talent and attention to detail, they won't want to release this until everything's perfect. I'll admit that I know a bit more on "Perihelion" than what I've posted here courtesy of e-mail conversations and private postings, but I'll wait until more public word comes out. Keep an eye out for updates!

Id Iota's full length second CD

Rumoured Songs: "Happy Sailor", "Intro To American Literature", "Seas Envy Skies", "Long D", "Cop Drama", "Deep Empty", "Blind Spots"

Background: Not long after their successful Ontario tour with Mike Mikus last fall, Id Iota began recording sessions for their second album, though public confirmation that a full length CD was currently in progress didn't occur until guitarist Dustin Goodall announced it on his studio Unsalted Audio's website earlier this year. Scattered postings and hints have followed, but nothing else has came out beyond performances of newer originals in concert through this spring. For reference, this photo got shared a few times on Id Iota's Facebook page last year, but it's unclear if it's intended to be the album's cover artwork or not. As well, collaborations with ex-RedD Monkey cellist Pete Mozarowski could be present on the CD, but that's unconfirmed.

Current Release Status: No idea, especially with the alternative/hard rock quartet keeping fairly mum on it's progress, but if there was ever a plan to release it in time for their dissolved May tour run, that's obviously came and went. Keep watch for updates as they roll in!

Kraken Mara's self-titled debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Chimera", "Ishka", "Grand Machinations", "Straus"

Background: The current progressive metal project from Late & Loud guitarist Brendan Christie & Wawa band veteran Jake Valois, Kraken Mara immediately commenced work on studio material upon their April 2016 launch, though they have yet to assemble a full lineup, let alone play live. In sporadic updates since on their Facebook page & their website, the band has indicated ongoing recording sessions towards a self-titled EP, posting and reworking original demos to their website and Reverbnation page over recent months, with Reese Wolf working as sound engineer for the tracks. As well, the cover artwork for the EP was revealed on Facebook at the end of March, and the band has since confirmed plans to record music videos for all of the planned tracks, starting with one for "Straus" in July.

Current Release Status: Your guess is as good as mine. Brendan and Jake are keeping things very professional and technical so far, but updates don't come all that frequently regarding Kraken Mara, be they for the EP or not. That said, the instrumental material sounds very good and complex so far, and should please fans of progressive and djent metal, so things could be further along than you may guess. Keep tabs above for updates!

Northwest's second EP

Rumoured Songs: "Hangover Habits", "Drinking Games"

Background: Following the release of their debut self-titled digital EP in September 2014, and a lengthy stage hiatus from late last year through this winter, local indie/punk quintet Northwest resumed major activity in April 2017 with teaser photos of recording sessions at Mission Control Studios with producer Dustin Jones (as they had done for their debut) being posted over the spring to their Facebook page. Confirmation that this was for a new EP, their first with current drummer Marc Santos, only came in July via their write-up in this year's Rotaryfest program, prior to their first appearance on the Second Stage..

Current Release Status: It's hard to say, especially given their quiet postings aside from the teaser photos, and the fact that their debut EP was only released online, but things sound like they're progressing well at a reliable local studio, and hopefully Northwest's second album sees it's way onto online or physical storefronts in the coming months!

Redundant's debut CD

Rumoured Songs: "Miles Apart", "That December", "What You'll Do"

Background: Over two and a half years after their last documented studio sessions in the spring of 2012, local punk trio Redundant revealed on their Facebook page in November 2014 that they were finally working on finishing their debut CD, and will look to hold a CD release party for it upon it's completion. Details are otherwise minimal, including on if the guys will just package their older studio work for the release, or include new recordings, perhaps at bassist James White's studio White Wreckords. We'll keep you posted if we hear more!

Current Release Status: Though we don't know much on the new/revived album plans, Redundant did sound serious about completing their CD. That said, Redundant have only played a handful of times in the last couple of years, and haven't made any public statements regarding the album since 2014. The band did resume public activity in March 2016, announcing that they were writing new songs and working on "new studio shit", but it's not clear how earlier album sessions would play in. If we hear any updates, we'll be sure to let you know!

Skeyes of Seven - Stare at the Sky

Rumoured Songs: "Enough", "See The Truth", "Fallen Faith", "Pretend", "Cognitive Dissonance", "Crawling Back From Reality"

Background: Already no strangers to the studio after recording two songs as singles in the mid-2010s, local modern hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven hit the studio to record their debut EP in 2015, though they only publically confirmed that an EP was in the works in January 2016. Sessions took place at Deluca Sound Productions, who have shared videos of band members tracking material for the EP, the title of which being unveiled last fall. In January, all six songs were posted to their YouTube channel, including the new instrumental "Crawling Back From Reality", while also excluding their older originals "Destination Unknown" & "No One Cares". New guitarist Kyle Sweet is not visibly on the EP, having joined Skeyes of Seven after sessions concluded.

Current Release Status: Given that the whole EP is online for free streaming, then conventional wisdom would say that "Stare at the Sky" would be released imminently, but the band has yet to confirm a paid release date. Hopefully it doesn't stall at being a free posting, as Skeyes of Seven are a talented and experienced band, and having been active in studio more than on stage since launching in 2012, it'd be great to see them culminate this process with a release concert (for what it's worth, a planned return show last month was cancelled.) Follow along to see where things go!

Telephone & Address - "Monster" & "The Early Tapes"

Rumoured Songs (M): "I Can Bleed"

Rumoured Songs (E): "The Plumbers"

Background: Telephone & Address mainman Chris Shoust announced on their Facebook page in 2015 that he was working on releasing "The Early Tapes", a compilation of songs from the first 4 Telephone & Address albums (2011's self titled album, and 2012's "Live", "No. 3", and "Broken Head"). Since then however, he revealed that a separate new album named "Monster" is done, with an advanced copy leaked to him by AlgomA drummer Jamie Vincent, which likely hints that Jamie helped produce it. However, a later-recorded album, "Are You Now or Have You Ever", was officially released in October, despite "Monster" being announced a year previously. Songs from both of these unreleased albums can be streamed on their Soundcloud page, and they're likely to turn up on Telephone & Address' Bandcamp page and on Interpunk down the road.

Current Release Status: Chris has indicated online that "Monster" was planned to be pressed in the fall of 2015, blaming money issues for the delays in it being released, and while a November 2016 release date was teased last fall, that has came & went too. We're likely nearing it's release at some point in 2017 though! Regarding the "The Early Tapes", Chris revealed in March 2015 that it "will be delayed for some time", though he didn't elaborate on why specifically. Assuming things go according to plan, Telephone & Address should have some big albums in the works, so we'll keep you posted when more on any of these comes out!

I hope you guys liked this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! This series will return on or around October 2nd, and our next monthly feature post, barring a quick AlgomA/Shit Liver split review, will be this month's Defunct Local Band Profile one week from tomorrow! That's all for now, but stay tuned for more news in the coming days, and if you can, don't miss Diamond Head TONIGHT at The Rockstar Bar! Thanks everyone!

Diamond Head Concert Preview, Winkstinger's New Frontman, And Much More!!

The fall months are upon us, so for our first post of September 2017, we're tackling a big concert preview for tomorrow to round our our Labour Day weekend previews, but also, there's some assorted recent updates, some new concert videos, and a big lineup change to take note of as well. Now, here's what you should know!

TOMORROW NIGHT will see one of the most influential metal bands to ever play in Sault Ste. Marie, as legendary British metal quintet Diamond Head will make their first ever local appearance with a headlining set at The Rockstar Bar! One of the linchpins of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Diamond Head will be ultra familiar to many metalheads for their influence on newer acts like Metallica (who have covered a number of their songs), so it'll be a thrill to see them on a local stage tomorrow! Only two local opening bands are slated to play tomorrow night, including local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades in their first date since last month's Ontario tour run, while classic metal quartet Project 421 will play an exceedingly fitting set to kick things off! I wouldn't expect to see them cover "Am I Evil?" tomorrow with Brian Tatler and company likely to play it themselves, but this is a huge platform for 421 as they continue their resurgence, so don't miss them either! Prior indications of a third local band have since been removed from the Facebook event page.

Promoted by Jack Spades frontman J.D. Pearce, advance tickets are likely still available for $22.50 at Case's Music, The Rad Zone, The Algonquin Hotel's front desk, online at this link, and potentially through opening band members, and while a price hike at the door isn't indicated, have extra cash on hand just in case you chance it. This is a 19+ show, and a 9:00 PM start time is advertised. This is a can't miss show for classic metal fans, so if you can help it, get down to The Rockstar Bar tomorrow for what promises to be a great night of NWOBHM action over the Labour Day weekend! For a preview, here's Diamond Head live earlier this year!

Next up, here's a big lineup change, as reunited local extreme metal quartet Winkstinger have added Twistory frontman Josh Amendola as their new singer, replacing Keith Gagnon. Though not yet announced on the band's sporadically updated Facebook page, Josh debuted with Winkstinger at The New American Pub last week, and later confirmed his addition to their lineup on his solo Facebook page on Tuesday. A reason for Keith's departure has not been publically announced, though whether his band status factored into their year+ long hiatus is up for debate. Best of luck to Keith in his recent solo work though, he's a talented musician in multiple roles! Josh's debut with Winkstinger wasn't without it's hang-ups, as last week's concert saw the late drop-out of Saskatchewan grindcore band Dour after miscommunication with promoters, though the local bands played on, and hopefully Dour try to play here again here during a future tour!

No word yet on how Josh sounds with Winkstinger, or if he's bringing back rhythm guitar to their live repertoire, but it'll be interesting to hear Winkstinger material with a harsher death metal vocalist compared to Alan and Keith's higher screaming work. Stay tuned for more on Winkstinger's new lineup when it rolls in, and don't miss their next live appearance at the Oh!No 2017 Music Festival in Leeburn next week!

Also today, here's our first known video footage from this year's Rudyard Musicians Festival, courtesy of Sault Michigan alt-metal quartet The Karstens' set two weeks ago! Posted to their YouTube channel on Sunday, three videos were uploaded of the online page-less band's set at Rudyard Township Park, including a cover of The Stooges' "Down on the Street" and, as embedded below,  The Deli Creeps' "Binge & Grab". The Karstens deliver some solid performances in these videos, tackling bands you don't often hear in this area, and while dark, I like how the lighting adds to the mood of the songs! Note that the Stooges cover isn't filmed from a stationary angle, so while that video gets a closer look at the band, it's also a shakier view at the same time. The other video from the show is a 30 second clip of their rendition of The Animals' "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", uploaded to show vocal disparity between monitor and P.A. vocals that night, and it has a good chaotic sound from what we hear. Give these new Karstens videos a look above & below!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

  • Sault Ontario hard rock quintet Halfway Loaded announced on their Facebook page on Wednesday that they've changed their name to The Twin City Saints. The band cited "some thinking" and throwing around "a lot of names" as contributing factors, though this isn't their first name change, possibly debuting as "2 Far Gone". The new name, if it sticks, isn't a bad one, but will it conflict with Twin City Sound & Entertainment? Time will tell, but stay tuned for more on this newer band as it rolls in!
  • Former Frightlight drummer Jeff De Rose is looking for "a bass player with punk rock abilities", presumably for a new band project he's working on. Jeff's been missed in local bands, so hopefully he finds someone, but if you or someone you know are interested in trying out on bass, message Jeff at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from Tuesday!
  • SooToday's Donna Hopper posted a promotional article onto the local news website on Sunday as coverage for next weekend's Oh!NO 2017 Music Festival in nearby Leeburn, so what's new to learn in it? Co-promoter Jamie Vincent is interviewed for the article, where he notes the festival's inspiration came from other regional music festivals in outskirt towns, plus noting how certain out of town bands signed on, as well as future goals and extra ground rules. Also, "Robbie's Church" is now a residence, but it was a church. Nicely detailed and laid out article, so visit the above links for much more on next Sunday's ambitious festival!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post tomorrow! Thanks everyone!
