As promised, here's those mid-week concert previews on this Monday morning, but to go along with them, I have some videos to share from a recent metal concert. Now, here's what you should know, starting with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!
Local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to Mark's Breakfast Plus at the Market Mall for the first time this year with special matinee concerts TODAY, TOMORROW, and WEDNESDAY! Apologies for the short notice, these shows were only announced via their Facebook event page on Friday. A frequent venue for Tym Morrison's acoustic solo gigs since Mark's opened in 2017, Tym is known for typically playing at this west end diner on early weekday bookings, but these will actually be his first public shows there since last June. I'm surprised he didn't play there more often when Gliss was relocating, but it's great to see Tym back at a familiar locale TODAY, TOMORROW, and WEDNESDAY, even on late notice! As usual for his Mark' Breakfast Plus gigs, expect these to have early 4:00 PM start times with no announced cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale. Next up, here's a preview of a huge concert with lots of advance notice, as Juno nominated Windsor hard/world rock trio The Tea Party will return to Sault Ste. Marie THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT at The Machine Shop! Following their successful free concert at The Roberta Bondar Pavilion last July, the band behind such hits as "Psychopomp" & "The Messenger" are back for another show full of hard rocking songs from their long career, including their new single "Black River", and hopefully there's a strong turnout for Jeff, Stuart, and Jeff's return to the Soo on Wednesday! Joining The Tea Party as openers (though only quietly acknowledged in local advertising) are Winnipeg southern rock quintet The Proud Sons, whose country-inflected original sound will prove an interesting contrast on Wednesday, but they have the talent and musicianship to go around nicely! Presented by Cabin Media, this is unfortunately not a free and all ages concert like last year, with tickets running for $40, but they are still available!
You can buy tickets at this link and presumably in-person/at the door, attendees must be 19 or older, and a 7:30 PM start time is advertised. After a 19 year wait for The Tea Party to rock Sault Ste. Marie ended last summer, it's great to see them back so soon, and hopefully they deliver another skilled and fan-friendly set on Wednesday! We'll close today with some new concert videos shot by the ever-generous Christopher Paci (who also filmed the above Tea Party video), as he was in attendance for Saturday night's OZbourne concert at The Canadian Nightclub, filming 11 videos that night for his YouTube channel. Kudos to Chris as usual, he goes above and beyond when he's at a show regarding filming the bands! Regarding the headliners, Chris filmed the Winnipeg-based Ozzy Osbourne tribute band covering Black Sabbath's "War Pigs", "Paranoid", "N.I.B.", and (part of) the song "Black Sabbath", plus five of Ozzy's own solo songs, namely "Bark At The Moon", "Flying High Again", "Crazy Train", "I Don't Know", and as embedded below, "No More Tears." Generally, OZbourne deliver the goods on these videos for Ozzy fans in music and presentation, and Chris got a nice close view of the band too, so fans should enjoy these clips! Give them a look above & below!
Lastly, Chris also filmed two videos of opening blues rock cover trio The Paul DellaVedova Band on Saturday, and it's clear that Paul & company are fans of Paul Rodgers & Simon Kirke, as their filmed covers are of Bad Company's "Rock & Roll Fantasy" and, as embedded below, Free's "All Right Now." Nice to see the guys break out some hard rock classics for the occasion, and while Chris wasn't as close to the stage as he would get with OZbourne, you get some good angles on these solid covers! No, I don't know if the stage setup with the speakers behind metal barriers on the floor is permanent or just for this concert. Give Paul's videos a look as well!

This is a quiet weekend for hard rock, metal, and punk concerts in the Soo this weekend (granted, the W.T.F. Festival has many of the local entertainment headlines), so we've padded out this concert preview post with some new videos from a prominent Sault Michigan act, plus some assorted recent news and updates! Now, let's kick things off with a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, and give our June Jam concert video showcase post from this morning a look below this one!
Joining his already announced Gliss Steak & Seafood matinee concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY, prolific local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will play a special afternoon concert set THIS SATURDAY at 12:00 PM when he plays at Mark's Breakfast Plus' first anniversary celebration! Apologies for the short notice on that concert, it was only announced on via it's official Facebook event page yesterday. As a way of honouring their first anniversary at the Market Mall, the west end diner will also have prize giveaways, free anniversary cake, and hourly specials on hand on SATURDAY, while Rock 101 DJ Allison "Alli J" Miller will reportedly be broadcasting on site with sister station Oldies 93 concurrently with Tym's concert (source here), so keep all of these angles in mind! Of course, Tym's ongoing weekly run at Gliss continues with two more matinees tomorrow and Saturday, with the latter unusually being the later show on a two gig day!
All three shows have no announced age limits or cover charges (though remember, both are sit-down restaurants), and while the Gliss shows are 6:00 PM matinees as usual, SATURDAY'S show at Mark's Breakfast Plus is at 12:00 noon, so don't be late! Congratulations to everyone at Mark's for their first year in business, and hopefully this weekend's bash, and Tym's Gliss gigs, are all big hits with fans and patrons alike! Next up, here's this weekend's only other advertised hard rock/punk concert, an unusually big one scheduled for Room 21 TOMORROW NIGHT! So big, in fact, that promoter J.D. Pearce had to move it downstairs into their sister barbecue restaurant Low & Slow, so keep the shift in floor in mind! This concert will see local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades and alternative/punk trio Handsome Sandwich make their venue debuts as support for British Columbia alternative folk musician Jesse Stewart, who fans may recognize from his rapidly growing online profile with energetic, passionate, and punk-inspired performances on YouTube. These helped him win a contest to appear in the Trailer Park Boys season 9 finale, and if you haven't seen Jesse before, definitely do so, I've never seen anyone this lively and intense while playing a mandolin! Regarding the openers, this will be Jack Spades' first concert since March, while it'll be Handsome Sandwich's first of the year.
It's great to see each group back at it, and hopefully Johnny delivers the goods as he pulls double duty with both bands tomorrow! While this 19+ concert had sold out it's limited 50 tickets at the end of April, the move downstairs to Low & Slow opened up as many new seats, so head to Low & Slow/Room 21 on Albert Street West A.S.A.P. just in case it re-sells out! Tickets are $15, and a 10:00 PM start time is advertised. This should be a fun concert of punk, alternative, and folk intensity, so visit the official Facebook event page for complete details, and here's Jack Spades live!
Also today, here's some new videos from Sault Michigan classical metal group Theatre of Night's Facebook page, as shared via keyboardist Craig Harrison's personal Facebook page on Saturday! Craig posted three clips, which feature him and guitarist Steve Giles jamming at a table, with Craig also manning an effects board on his tablet. One video is entirely focused on Steve performing a very classical-sounding number, but the other two have the guys recording what sounds like the same song, which has more of a 1970s classic rock vibe from what I can detect (one is embedded below, the other you can watch here.) Casual, but well performed, so give them a look too!

This past Sunday's Dumpster Mummy concert at The New American Pub in Sault Ontario was quietly cancelled that same night, as per the headliners' Facebook page.
The band cited "venue complications out of our control" for the
cancellation, and while the Facebook event page was taken down at 10:00
PM on Sunday, there was never a public acknowledgement of the show's
status from local promoters or openers. Hopefully nothing too serious
happened, it'd have been cool to see Dumpster Mummy back in the Soo!
We have replaced local progressive death metal band Gates of Winter's link on the SMS with their Reverbnation page,
as their Facebook page was quietly taken down in recent months. Now,
this is usually a reliable sign that a band has broken up, but given Gates of Winter's
acknowledged slow pace to public updates, and a personal Facebook video
of Bryan and Steve jamming that was posted online in April, I am
inclined to believe that the page was automatically deactivated due to
disuse, as what happened to Destroilet last year. Hopefully they are
still together, I know fans are still eagerly awaiting the "Perihelion"
release!
The Gore Street Cafe's closing party will take place on Wednesday, June 27th at 5:00 PM, and they're going out with a bang, with a massive lineup including Edmonton experimental duo Wares and a stacked local opener lineup with such SMS-familiar artists as M.D. Dunn, Jacob Quarrell, Conika, DJ Seith, Vol. side-project Mik & Steve, and much more. Tickets are $25 for this all ages bash, and food will be included with admission. There's no major hard rock or punk component to their final event (yet?), but everything sounds like the perfect way to send things out for regulars! Click here for complete and current details!

Happy Mother's Day to all of our moms who follow the site (I know there's a few of you out there!) The fact that much of this post deals with a band named I Mother Earth is purely coincidental, but we have lots of concert videos to look at today, and to start, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (some on short notice), so here's what you should know!
Former Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will bring his acoustic solo show back to Mark's Breakfast Plus at the Market Mall for early-week matinees TOMORROW, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, and on Monday-Wednesday, June 11th, 12th, and 13th! Apologies for the short notice on this week's shows, they were only announced via their Facebook event page yesterday (all six shows share it.) After having just played the former Kackleberry's Cafe a couple of weeks back, this run of shows will see Tym Morrison play the second full week of this and next month, with six evenings of fan favourite and often heavy covers in store in the west end, so keep these in mind for your supper-time entertainment TOMORROW through WEDNESDAY, and then next month! No word yet on if this scheduling will maintain in July, but if it does, he'd play Mark's from July 9th-11th.
If you missed Tym at Friday's finger food-featured concert at Room 21, you'll get a quicker than expected encore at this other frequent recent venue of his! All six of these Mark's Breakfast Plus shows (TOMORROW, TUESDAY, and WEDNESDAY included) are 4:00 PM affairs with no announced cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale, this is a restaurant first. To round out today's post, let's feature some long awaited videos from last month's I Mother Earth/Finger Eleven concert at The Machine Shop, courtesy of frequent local concert attendee Christopher Paci's YouTube channel on Tuesday! I'm not sure why these videos took this long to make his channel, but better late than never, and we all know Chris' work is excellent by now! We usually go in descending order by lineup placement when featuring videos like this, but I'll reverse things given how the two bands joined forces to close the night. Chris didn't post anything from the acoustic pre-show or J.J. Thompson's opening set, but he did get 7 videos of Burlington hard rock quintet Finger Eleven in action, including of their songs "First Time", "Living in a Dream", "One Thing", "Falling On", "Drag You Down", "Paralyzer", and as embedded below, their set-opener "Above". While not super close to the stage, Chris has a good & central view!
As noted in our prior thoughts on videos from this concert, Finger Eleven sounded great, especially on their older and heavier material, and Scott's voice is as solid as ever! I'm sure it was a thrill for local fans to finally hear "Paralyzer"-era songs on a local stage too, of course. Nice work from Chris once again, so check out "Above" below, and their other songs above!
Likewise, Chris also filmed 7 videos of headlining Toronto alt-hard rock band I Mother Earth's set last month, filming them playing their songs "Used To Be Alright", "Raspberry", "Undone", "Summertime in the Void", "One More Astronaut", "Rain Will Fall", and as embedded below, their opener "Not Quite Sonic" (complete with spoken interlude from Edwin.) The camera work here is a little shakier, but the performances here are solid, if only marred by some muddy vocals, but long-time I.M.E. fans were right at home at The Machine Shop! Note that later songs from their set were filmed from a sharper angle to our left/the stage's right, but the camera quality is no different otherwise. Finally, Chris shot two videos of I Mother Earth & Finger Eleven's joint encore, including the two bands playing I.M.E.'s "Levitate", but embedded below is their combined rendition of Finger Eleven's own "Good Times" (no Supertramp cover here.) These had to be a thrill for fans of both bands, especially in a more intimate live setting, but when you have 9 band members plus I.M.E.'s touring musicians playing the same song at once, the instruments and sounds do admittedly get cluttered up. The spectacle of it all is absolutely there, but I'd rather hear both songs with just one band, not two at once. Maybe I'm wrong though, so see for yourself below and above!

This marks the second straight week that Tym has played unplugged matinee shows at this early stage of the week, which could mirror the scheduling from last month where he played the first and last weeks of April (if so, he'd be there next on May 28th-30th, but that is not officially public.) Despite the short online notice, Tym's prolific set list of hard and classic rock favourites should go over well at the Market Mall restaurant TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and WEDNESDAY, so keep these shows in mind for supper-time entertainment! Next up, here's a preview of a show that had lots of advance notice, as Regina pop punk quartet The Steves will make their local concert debut THIS WEDNESDAY when they headline at LopLops Lounge! Uniquely comprised of four guys all named Steve (hence the name), this lo-fi band should be a solid match at LopLops with their indie-tinged punk sound, and with a new single just released this month, look for some solid and upbeat tracks on Wednesday! Local support will include alt-punk trio A Dire Setback in their first public concert set of 2018 and just their second with Chris Nielsen on lead vocals, so how will they sound in their return from the studio, and might there be any reveals regarding album plans? Be at LopLops in a couple of days to find out! Indie/hard rock trio Vol. were slated to kick off Wednesday night's show, but with their drummer vacancy still ongoing, frontman Steve Edwards and bassist Mikaela Murtonen will play as a duo under the name "Mik & Steve", as per a quiet update on the Facebook event page.
Will Mik & Steve basically play a drummer-less Vol. set, or a go a different route? We'll know either way on Wednesday! This stop mid-way through The Steves' Champagne Campaign Tour is presented locally by Six, Two, Oh., with a 9:00 PM start time, $5 cover charge, and a 19+ age limit all in effect. This should be a solid concert, especially if you love punk and indie rock in equal measure, so if you can get to LopLops on Wednesday night, don't miss out on this one! Also today, here's a new solo cover video from local/Manitoba solo hard rock musician Mike Haggith's Facebook page! Already keeping busy in Thompson via shows with his new band Between The Ditches and occasional coffeehouse solo sets, Mike shared this cover of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps" yesterday, which is a song he's always loved. Bookended by rainy footage from out Mike's window, this is a fine performance that has a measured moroseness to it, if that makes sense, and it'll definitely please fans of his recent acoustic videos, so give it a look below!

We have deleted the YouTube channel for SooToday's acoustic concert performance webseries Bare from our "Other Local Metal Links" due to it quietly being taken down in recent months. A reason for the channel's closure hasn't visibly been announced, and while SooToday articles on the episodes remain online, the video links there no longer work. Bare hadn't been an active series since 2016, but it gave members of bands like Northwest, The Pixo Control, and many others a unique avenue to perform in a more intimate setting, and hopefully the prior Bare episodes return online down the road!
We have also deleted inactive local music promotion/photography company For The Music Inside from our "Other Local Metal Links" again, following the quiet deletion of their Twitter (and only surviving online) page earlier this year. A reason for the page being taken down wasn't publically announced, but F.T.M.I. hadn't posted new content since 2016 either, and not from local shows since earlier still. For The Music Inside had promise and solid concert photography here and in Southern Ontario, and hopefully everyone stays active in related ventures!
Local/St. Catharine's grindcore trio Shit Liver announced on their Facebook page on Thursday that they'll be featured in a new split album called "War of Brutality" alongside 5 international crust punk and/or death metal bands! Release data is to be confirmed, but if this YouTube video is any indication, Shit Liver's included songs are "Wait" & "Matt Got Beat Up By Cops" from their new album "Hitting the Fan". If this is true, there's nothing new on the local end, but hopefully this makes Shit Liver some more international fans! Full disclosure, I can't confirm if the YouTube posting is 100% accurate with label consent.

After not publically promoting last month's Mark's bookings online (his personal Facebook page aside), Tym is giving April's gigs some public attention, so if you didn't hear the word on those events, here's your opportunity for this month! No word on if Tym played Easter Monday and the event page went up after then, or if there was no show that day due to the holiday. Next up, here's the latest from local indie/hard rock quartet Id Iota, starting with the long awaited reveal of their new bassist, as while the band still hasn't publically stated his identity in writing, it looks like Pillory frontman Robert Sartini has replaced Dan Linklater in their lineup, as per photos floating around on Facebook. Belatedly, a reason for Dan's departure was not announced that I've seen, but hopefully nothing bad happened, and that we see him in a new band down the line! While better known for his metal work, Robert has recently showed his lighter side in the jazz band The Peach Thieves, so this should be a happy medium for him, assuming I didn't whiff on his identity! The Thessalon gig aside, Id Iota's current lineup made their Sault Ste. Marie debut during their headlining concert at LopLops Lounge this past weekend, and Live705 were on hand to film them, as well as opening bands Pointless and Tea With Lincoln, so what should you know there?
As posted to their Facebook page during that show, the videos capture an original song from each band, and while the audio quality and angle of each is solid, they chose to put a filter in post-production on all but the Tea With Lincoln video, which make the video look like a pencil sketch. I'll be honest, I don't like how it looks, it makes them look like the videos were shot during a snowstorm, but if you like artistic filters, you might get a kick out of them beyond the talented music! Also today, here's a video from new Sault Michigan alt-pop rock quintet Midnight Logic! White not overly heavy from what I've seen and heard of them (so far?), the presence of Intrepid alum Nick Pavlat was always a good sign! This jam session video went up on their Facebook page on March 7th, and it features their instrumental members (including bassist Steven Kirkman & drummer Kade DesArmo) covering Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing". Filmed close to the guys and with solid quality, the angles can admittedly be a little too close, but this is a fun jam, so give it a look below! No word yet though on how they or other bands did at the Superior Cafe competition.

In a post on their Facebook page last week, Sault Ontario goregrind solo project Crucify the Whore
revealed that they plan on releasing "on the fly" tracks recorded
during their recent break, and after alluding to "a huge twist and turn
of events" in Tyler's personal life that may relate to Blood Shed Productions' quiet 2017, it was indicated that new C.T.W., Rotopsy, and Malignant Neoplasm
updates are coming, as well as "new projects" & "new endeavours".
Hopefully this all pans out, it's been odd not hearing new music from
the Blood Shed as of late!
Are a form of regular metal nights coming to The Canadian Nightclub
in the near future? Promoter and former Lorax frontman Jeremy Hannah
announced that metal nights are "starting up again" at the Pim Street
venue via his Sault MusicScene Facebook page
on Wednesday, though he gave no indication of dates, scheduling,
format, or bands. Jeremy's return to promotion has largely been
contained to varied genre events at The Canadian, but if a new metal
night series can take off there, I'm all for it! Stay tuned for
updates!
London, England alternative metal trio LTNT (pronounced "lieutenant") have quietly been named as the second opener for the Seether concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino on August 11th, as per recent updates to it's Facebook event page. LTNT's sound has an grungy yet accessible bite, and will add an intriguing element to the night's lineup, so give them a listen above, and get your tickets A.S.A.P.!

Some shorter assorted stories from recent days, a video remembering and hyping up past and future installments of a concert festival, and LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for the spring, but we'll start with one on SHORT NOTICE and a related apology!

Profuse apologies for the short notice (and for missing last night's concert), Tym only announced them via his personal Facebook page yesterday at supper time, with a Facebook event page that listed the shows as being on February 12th and 13th being taken down after the fact. These will "mark" Tym's first shows at the Market Mall restaurant since the end of February, and if you're up for some skilled (if late notice) acoustic hard rock classics, be at Marks TONIGHT! While we're in the business, Tym will also bring his acoustic solo act to The Tech on Saturday, April 7th for an afternoon set during the first annual Twin City Tattoo Convention, which will definitely be a unique showcase for his material! Tym will be playing before acoustic country duo The Bearded Lounge and blues veterans The Swamp Cats that day.
TONIGHT'S (and yesterday's) Mark's shows are 6:00 PM matinees with no announced cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale, while the Twin City Tattoo Convention may or may not have age limits and cover charges, so check the above links for full details therein. Time-wise, he's on at 12:30 PM, with The Stray Cats at 3:00 PM and The Bearded Lounge headlining at 6:00 PM. Whether you want some imminent supper-time music or want to rock out amongst local inked brethren, Tym's staying busy! Next up, here's a couple of new shows regarding local alternative hard/indie rock quartet Id Iota, who will make their long awaited return to the local stage for the first time since May at three upcoming shows this spring! To start, the guys will join drone rock trio Pointless for a joint concert at LopLops Lounge on Friday, March 30th, in what will be the Soo debut of Id Iota's still-unrevealed new bassist, as well as an early live appearance for Pointless with Id Iota's own Dustin Goodall on bass in place of the relocated Jordan Leach. Nice to see both bands back on stage, and this should be an interesting style contrast at LopLops at month's end! If you can't be at that show, both bands will also join forces at the same venue on Saturday, May 19th when they open for Sudbury garage rock trio The Almighty Rhombus, whose contemporary and lively sound is well suited to the venue, and they should attract an audience along with the locals in May as well!
For the former, a $5 cover charge, 19+ age limit, and 9:00 PM start time are in effect, and while online advertising for the latter has not commenced, I imagine all three will translate to that show except for maybe a higher cover. Id Iota have been busy in studio since last year working on their first full length album, and have teased that we may see it this year finally, but look for originals from it and some surprise covers at these two shows, and remember, Pointless are fronted by Bill Priddle of Treble Charger fame! Next up, here's a retrospective video from/teaser for the Oh!No Music Festival in nearby Leeburn, Ontario, courtesy of co-promoter/AlgomA drummer Jamie Vincent's YouTube channel yesterday! The 2 minute clip features high quality footage from the Robbie's Church-held festival from Six, Two, Oh., as set to "The Sweat of a Hero" by Sudbury punk trio Lightmares (who were on last year's bill), though to my knowledge, the full footage from the cameras used here, let alone with original audio, isn't publically viewable yet. In this video, you'll see performance footage of every single band or solo act that played last year (even DJ Seith), and it's well edited, letting us see everything without giving much away! The video's end implies that the Oh!No Festival will return to Leeburn on Friday, September 8th, and while I don't think the logo at the end is anything more than a new Oh!No logo, there are more questions. Who's playing this year? Will it be at the church again? Will the ground rules change? Keep tabs for more details, and look back on last year below!

In a post on their Facebook page yesterday, The Canadian Nightclub indicated that they were looking for bands to play at the venue and upstairs at The Upper Deck Lounge (adding "WE PAY! YOU PLAY!"), as well as a mention that they are "looking at hosting a battle of the bands in the near future" with "great prizes". It'd be great to see a new battle there, not to mention more bands playing regularly at this fan favourite venue, so see above to inquire on how to play at The Canadian in either setting!
Local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades and sister punk trio Stegadeth will both be heading out to Meyersburg for this year's Spiderfest on Saturday, July 14th! Both bands will be playing on night 2 of the annual punk/extreme metal festival, where they'll open for such past local performers as The Ripcordz, Random Killing, and The Union Thugs. Jack Spades have spoken very highly of the Spiderfest experience in the past, and here's hoping both bands deliver a knockout blow again this summer!
Former That's Chester drummer Ric Datson (now of Bone Yard & Mojo fame) is featured in the cover story of the new issue of The Soo Profile Magazine, featuring interview remarks from him and an outline of his musical, professional, and charitable endeavours. Very entertaining interview that paints a quality picture of Ric in varying facets, and it's well worth a read at the above links and/or at participating local merchants!

Here's another news post for you guys on this Saturday afternoon, and it includes previews of a few upcoming shows, some assorted recent updates, and some long awaited videos and fallout from a big concert last week. First, however, we have a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT and related apology, so here's what you should know! (Updated at 4:38 PM)
Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will rock The Esquire Club TONIGHT, after previously playing there last night! Profuse apologies for the short notice and for missing last night's show on here, we only heard about them overnight via members' personal Facebook pages (Soundcheck haven't updated their Facebook page in over a month), though for what it's worth, the picture of the physical schedule at the venue suggests that they replaced country veterans Bone Yard this weekend, possibly on short notice as it was. It's also worth noting that this same schedule (which was up at The Esquire Club long before it went online) also advertised Soundcheck shows two weeks ago. If they did happen, my apologies for missing them, but I can't find any personal or public reference to those shows occurring. As for TONIGHT's (and yesterday's) Soundcheck shows there, the guys enlisted Bone Yard frontman Greg Simpson to fill in for Steven Flint on drums last night, but Steven confirmed on his personal Facebook page that he will be back with Soundcheck for TONIGHT'S concert.
Greg was a solid choice, and it's interesting to see him drumming without singing lead like in Stiffler's Mom! Also, you may notice on the above poster that a planned Stiffler's Mom weekend at The Esquire Club in late March was cancelled before making it's way online, with Cherry Crush replacing them. Hopefully nothing bad happened, though note that we haven't heard from this band online since last fall. TONIGHT'S Soundcheck show is likely a 10:00 PM affair with no announced cover charge and a 19+ age limit, with all being the same last night too. As well, SooToday's Donna Hopper posted this article with remarks on the show and 15 photos of the bands online on Valentine's Day, including 11 of Big Wreck and 4 of Attica Riots. Sounds like the show went over very well, and it's great to see Ian and company play here again rather than hanging out in a parking lot between shows! Donna's photos are excellent as usual, so give them and her article a look above, and definitely check out Chris' solid videos from last week above & below!
Also, here's our previews of a trifecta of early-week concerts from local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison, who will return to Mark's Breakfast Plus in the Market Mall for matinee gigs on MONDAY, TUESDAY, and WEDNESDAY! After previously playing at the former Kackleberry's for three matinee shows two weeks ago, Tym will return for a Gliss-esque scheduling of shows again early next week, and fans should be eager to see his unplugged classic selections again, even at these still somewhat atypical days! No word on if Tym will be playing at Mark's on Mondays-Wednesdays with any regularity once the month is done, but we'll let you know if anything is announced. Much like his usual solo matinees, these three shows are 6:00 PM events with no age limit or announced cover charge, but remember that this is a restaurant, not a typical venue. A local drummer named John Chindamo is looking to join or start a local band, noting that he is "familiar with the classic rock and some of today's stuff", and is willing to learn country if needed. I'm not overly familiar with John, but it's great to see him wanting something to do with local music, and if you're interested in more details, message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from Monday!
The newest song from ex-Skull After Betrayl frontman Mike Vincent's solo project (and for his intended second solo album) can now be heard on his Bandcamp page! Entitled "Prevarication", this should please fans of Mike's more technical metal instrumental work of recent years, so give it a listen above!
Bear Hunters guitarist Mitch Sirie has revived his Sorrow Fields solo project after a 2 year hiatus, and is apparently working on their long-gestating debut CD at Mission Control Studios! Their Facebook page features a photo of Mitch playing at the studio, and as of Wednesday, he was working on guide tracks. No sign yet of a new online presence for The Sorrow Fields, but it's very encouraging to see Mitch picking up his solo music again, and The Sorrow Fields are back in our active band links, with a "Where Are The New Albums?" return next week also now in the cards!

A unusually high profile stretch of shows is upon us early this week, so let's largely cover those in this Monday morning post, alongside some new videos from a recent concert, and leading off, surprise LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, half on SHORT NOTICE! Here's what you need to know!
Prolific local acoustic hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison has announced six matinee gigs at Mark's Breakfast Plus for this month TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and WEDNESDAY, then again on February 26th-28th! Apologies for the short notice, Tym only announced these shows via their Facebook event page yesterday, and while he did also announce a pair of new Room 21 gigs as well, we will hold those for this weekend's concert previews to avoid redundantly covering them twice in under a week. Already busy enough with his weekly Gliss Steak & Seafood arrangement and bi-monthly Roadhouse gigs, February is suddenly packed for the former Caveman Morrison frontman, with only Thursdays having no gigs at all this month! TONIGHT'S Mark's show will be his first at the Market Mall restaurant of the year, and first in over two months, and if that doesn't work out for you schedule-wise, he will be back there on TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, and at month's end, so you have plenty of opportunities to see Tym live this month!
And no, the Wednesday gigs will not conflict with his open mic night hosting duties at The Canadian, as their matinee scheduling means they'll end well beforehand. All six of Tym's Mark's shows this month (including TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and WEDNESDAY) are at 4:00 PM with no announced cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale, this isn't a typical concert venue, let alone time of day or week. to previously announced concerts, hard rock fans in the Twin Saults
have quite a double header ahead with a huge show on both sides of the
border in the coming days, starting with the long awaited return of
Juno Award winning Toronto/Boston hard rock notables Big Wreck to the Sault Ontario stage TOMORROW NIGHT at The Machine Shop!
Familiar to rock fans for high charting hits like
"Albatross", "Blown Wide Open", and "That Song", this will be Ian
Thornley and company's first local concert appearance since 2001,
so if you've been waiting patiently for their local return for the past
16+ years, here is your big chance! This show is a stop on Big Wreck's
20th anniversary tour for their multi-platinum debut album "In Loving
Memory Of...", and if recent shows are any indication, expect that whole
album to be played tomorrow, albeit in mixed up order! Winnipeg
alternative rock trio Attica Riots
will open this show in their local debut, so look for an upbeat
pop/indie rock-influenced sound from them tomorrow as
well!
Also, don't forget the interview with Ian by The Sault Star's Jeffery Ougler from January 28th, which talks about his musical background, Big Wreck's initial successes and drawbacks, and more, so give this detailed interview a look above or if you still have that issue! Tickets for this 18+ show are $35, and are available at this link or at the Machine Shop and Station Mall's in person box office, while the show proper starts at 8:00 PM. This should be a very solid concert for hard rock fans, especially with such a long wait for Big Wreck's local return, so don't miss all of the action at The Machine Shop tomorrow night, and here they are live!
Finally for this early-week batch of concert previews, we'll head across to Sault Michigan, where Muskegon hard rock quintet Pop Evil will return for their fifth local concert appearance THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT for a Valentine's Day concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Soo's Kewadin Casino! Hitting this venue for their fourth headlining show there, and first since last February, this should be another great opportunity for fans to check out this fan favourite group and their numerous chart-topping hits like "Footsteps" & "Torn to Pieces", plus their newest single "Waking Lions", so there should be lots of familiar hard hitting songs to take in on Wednesday! Las Vegas/Toronto "fashion-art rock" band Palaye Royale (not "Palace") and San Francisco post-hardcore trio Black Map will open this show in their own local debuts, and with the former's indie influenced power rock and the latter's more aggressive metal attack, both should make solid fanbases here on Wednesday, so don't be late for them!
The first concert of 2018 from Allstar Promotions (who have put on most of Pop Evil's local gigs), tickets for this all ages event are $25, and are available at the in-person box office, at this link, or at 1-800-KEWADIN, with limited center section seating still available, but seats from the second row and back are still on sale in the left & right sections. Everything starts at 7:00 PM, and whether you're in this just for the rock, or if this is part of your Valentine's Day plans, Pop Evil should have a great show in store for their U.P. fans once again! Finally for today, we'll stay on the Kewadin track, as local hard/blues rock quartet Project 906 have shared four videos from their set opening for Laith Al-Saadi at The Dreammaker's Theater on Saturday onto their Facebook page! All vertically oriented cell phone camera clips, two were shared from guitarist Joe Jenkins' personal Facebook page, including the end of their cover of ZZ Top's "Tush", and an instrumental section that I can't identify off hand. Both are more less to showcase Joe soloing, though new drummer Tommy Korcal is in easy view on them also, and the quality is solid despite the length! Attendee Dani Baumann also filmed the guys playing "Tush", and while it is an earlier section with vocals, Joe gets some solid solo time in at the end! The audio quality is even clearer, and while Dani was further from the stage than the filmer on Joe's clips, she zoomed in and showcased Billy & Dustin too, so it all works out! However, embedded below is a full performance clip of Project 906 covering The Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See", courtesy of attendee Katie Jeffson, so how does it sound?
In our first look at the current Project 906 lineup, we get a solid cover of this southern rock standard here, and it's a bluesy enough number to suit the concert's theme! Solid video quality despite the vertical angle, and you get a good view of everyone, all things considered, so give this video a look below, and see more from this show above!

As a result, we are approaching the mid-point of a nine show run in just ten nights, and if you're up for some unplugged hard rock favourites in the west end, be at Mark's TOMORROW, TUESDAY, or WEDNESDAY! As usual for Tym's matinee gigs at either restaurant, expect 6:00 PM start times over the next three evenings, and there are no cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale. Next up, here's a new video from prolific local rock guitarist and Audiofumes podcast host Mike Cliffe's YouTube channel on December 2nd, featuring his review of a unique guitar! The instrument in question is the Seagull Merlin 4, a dulcimer-inspired acoustic guitarwith only four strings. Very folksy, bluegrass-reminscent sound, but it's an intriguing guitar that might be worth a look for guitarists and fans of Mike's music alike, and you can do so below!

I have deleted local music promotion/photography company For The Music Inside from our "Other Local Metal Links" due to it's Facebook (and only surviving online) page being taken down at some point in the past 6 months. Though most of their latter content was from Southern Ontario events, I liked what Joseph and Sean were doing to promote local shows and get great photos therein, and hopefully F.T.M.I. is revived down the road!
In his first Facebook page posting in over a month, local hard rock solo musician Mike McCleary shared a new acoustic cover of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper" from his Soundcloud page this past Tuesday! This version is a slower re-arrangement that has some intriguing compromises for it's style, with Mike also confirming that unspecified health issues were to blame for his November break, but new originals and his debut EP are still forthcoming!
In another deletion from our "Other Local Metal Links", we have also removed inactive local label/recording studio Paperclip Productions due to it's Facebook (and only online) page's deletion in recent months as well. Best known as the independent label and studio for the band Haggith and their side projects in the early-mid 2010s, it is unfortunate to see their last online page taken down, but you can hear much of their output via band pages!
In one final deletion from that same section, we have also removed what we labelled as "Sault Ste. Marie Concert Archive", which was a results listing of local concerts via Canadian news/entertainment site Canoe prior to their major design overhaul earlier this year, with the concert listing search no longer functioning to my knowledge. It was a great resource, especially when sourcing when certain notable touring bands played here in the pre-Facebook era, and hopefully Canoe restores it in some form!
Just a belated acknowledgement from our coverage of Sault Michigan-area label Werehold Records' final Friday the 13th music event in October, as cross-Michigan metal project Shatterhand (featuring Werehold founder Jason Mills) have resurfaced via their own YouTube channel! Only one song is there so far ("Faulty", complete with vocals), but whether channel exclusivity, lack of vocals, or another factor are to blame for their removal from Werehold's channel is up for debate. Shatterhand aren't a true local band, but I wanted to acknowledge the missing songs here!
The planned third installment of J.D. Pearce's seasonal acoustic punk revue X-Mess on December 23rd was cancelled late last month. While the show hadn't publically had a venue confirmed for it, he noted on the Facebook event page that it was primarily cancelled due to "a charity gig" taking place "super close" to it. J.D is likely referring to the second Guy Thiffault tribute concert on December 27th, which he and scheduled performer Lucas Schmiedendorf are both playing with Jack Spades and The HTs respectively. Disappointing on one hand, but the memorial show will be a blast once again, so see above for details on it!

If you're a long-time follower of the Sault Metal Scene, you'll know that our weekend concert previews usually start to go online on Thursdays. That said, with a slow post-Halloween news stretch and two SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for TONIGHT connected to an artist already playing this weekend, I will make an exception and post our weekend concert previews on a Wednesday. I don't have a post lined up for tomorrow anyway, so hopefully this will work out this week! That all said, there's some intriguing concerts going down through Saturday, so here's what you should know!
Prolific local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will once again play a special Wednesday night matinee concert at Mark's Breakfast Plus TONIGHT, in addition to his ongoing matinee gigs at Gliss Steak & Seafood TOMORROW, FRIDAY, and SATURDAY! Apologies for the short notice on the Mark's show, it was only announced via it's Facebook page on Sunday, with Tym indicating on his personal Facebook page that he'd only just learned about the booking. TONIGHT'S return to the Market Mall restaurant will "mark" the third in an at least four week run of Wednesday evening shows there, with previously announced matinees coming there next Monday through Wednesday as well. I have no idea yet if Tym is playing every Wednesday (or beyond?!) at Mark's or if this is just a good fall run, but keep TONIGHT'S show in mind for acoustic hard rock cover action, not to mention his regular shows at The Quality Inn's house restaurant tomorrow through Saturday!
As usual for Tym's restaurant matinee concerts, all four of these shows (be they at Mark's TONIGHT or Gliss through Saturday) are 6:00 PM engagements with no announced cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale, these aren't your typical nightclub venues. Next up, here's one more surprise late notice concert taking place TONIGHT, as local rap/metal project The Apocalypse Afterpartyand sister pop/hard rock quartet The Noochin' Lanterns will join forces for a show TONIGHT at The Speak Easy for what they're calling "Local Band Wednesday"! Apologies again for the short notice, this show was only announced yesterday via it's Facebook event page, and only came to our attention today. After months of these two bands only surfacing on stage for unannounced and intentionally short notice "pop-up shows", this at least has slightly more advance notice and advertising! In any event, it's nice to see them both back at it, so if you want to see how their current lineups sound, including new Noochin' Lanterns keyboardist Sarah Jackson, then head to Algoma University's campus bar TONIGHT! The two bands will be opening for an act known as The Oldest Soul, and while I cannot 100% confirm this is still the case, this was the name given to a prior acoustic solo project from Noochin' Lanterns frontman Paul Stanghetta. If so, this will be interesting to hear, and Paul has unplugged chops!
We'll move to previously announced concerts next with a brief detour to the Eastern Upper Peninsula, as Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63 are advertised to return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace THIS FRIDAY & SATURDAY NIGHT! These shows will mark Highway 63's first announced gigs since rocking The American Legion in the Soo on Saturday, October 28th for their annual Halloween bash, the fourth straight featuring Highway 63 as musical entertainment. Profuse apologies for missing that show for coverage on the site, it was only announced by the band on their Facebook page that same morning, let alone on a day when we didn't have a news post scheduled. We'd have covered it on here had it we known with even a day's more notice, but hopefully it was a great time once again! As for this weekend's shows, these will be Highway 63's first at the Northern Pines Lounge in over a month, with only one more weekend scheduled there in 2017 after Saturday night.
Note that Kewadin's entertainment page does not list this weekend's concerts, but Highway 63 confirmed them on their Facebook page back in January. Expect 9:00 PM start times for this weekend's shows, which are both 21+ events with no announced cover charge. Check the above links for more details, and here's Highway 63 live!
Finally, we'll head to The Rockstar Bar for one more show,
where local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires will
play a special one-night-only concert THIS SATURDAY NIGHT themselves!
Three weeks removed from their last show here, this talented veteran
band will provide the musical entertainment for a fundraiser event in
honour of the Community First Wild hockey team, who compete in the Soo Pee Wee Hockey League's
Atom Major A division. While not a sort of fundraiser that often
crosses our radar, it's always important to support young hockey
players, so hopefully the Wild get a solid boost from this event on
Saturday! Also, note that this is The Millionaires' only scheduled
concert before Toystock in 2 and a half weeks, so if you're up for their
hard rocking covers, you know where to be this weekend! A special $10
cover charge is in effect for this fundraiser, which has doors opening
at 9:00 PM, and I expect this will be 19+. Check the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's The 3 Day Millionaires live!
As for Saturday night's Doors & Fours concert that was originally in this post, I have bumped it to our next news post (likely coming Friday) due to the late notice Speak Easy concert, in order to spread things out and not overstuff this post. played a short notice Halloween concert at The Inn Gastropub &
Smokehouse in Paradise on Saturday night, but as Paradise is just past
our coverage range of one hour from the Soo, I didn't rush it into a
post. Hopefully their Paradise debut went well though, you don't hear of
many shows out there! Now, here's some new videos and some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, one on SHORT NOTICE!
Sault Ontario hard rock solo singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to Mark's Breakfast Plus at the Market Mall for a special mid-week matinee concert TOMORROW, with further gigs planned there on from Monday, November 13th through Wednesday the 15th! Apologies for the short notice on TOMORROW'S show, Tym only confirmed it via it's Facebook event page on Friday, while the mid-month triple run of gigs are currently advertised on SooToday's events calendar. Continuing his late-year increase of shows at the former Kackleberry's location at the west end mall, these new shows mean that Tym will have played three out of four Wednesdays at Mark's dating back to last week, while the shows in a couple of weeks mark his first Monday and Tuesday nighters there since last month. I don't know if a Gliss-esque weekly regular arrangement could be in the works, but don't miss Tym's new west end gigs at Mark's TOMORROW and/or in a couple of weeks!

Next up, here's some shows with more advance notice, starting with a new show from local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires, who will return to The Rockstar Bar for one night only on November 11th (one week from Saturday!) Apologies for the delay in this show making the site, it was announced earlier this month, but fell through the cracks. This special concert will see the guys perform as musical entertainment at a fundraiser event for the Community First Wild, an Atom Major A hockey team in the Soo Pee Wee Hockey League. Solid cause, it's always a good idea to support kids in their hockey careers and dreams, and hopefully this event is a big boost for the team as they continue their regular season! Admission is $10 for the fundraiser, which has an advertised 9:00 PM start time, and while I know Atom Major A players are kids, I would expect this is still a 19+ event. We'll close today with some new videos from a surprising source, namely AlgomA guitarist Boyd Rendell's Instagram page! While largely a personal use page, Boyd did share five videos there from last week's Faps concert at The New American Pub that he promoted with Six, Two, Oh., and while Instagram videos are limited to a minute or less, at least these give us a look at that show! Boyd filmed all three bands that night, including one video of new local acoustic solo project Slumshine (led by former Detroit frontman Brent Ellis) playing what appears to be an original song that may be named "Carry On". While a departure from Brent's past electric work as a singer and bassist, this has a good tone to it, and fans of folksier solo rock should enjoy what he has on offer, though this is admittedly a small sample! Three of Boyd's videos are of The Faps in action (including these videos linked here and here), so what should you know from the Saskatoon punk duo's set? While these are also short samples, you get a good sense of The Faps' chaotic punk onslaught that suits their two-man lineup well, even with minimal clothing! Yes, both have something on in those other two clips, but just in case, I embedded the one below when a little more was being worn. Also, does the song below sound a little like "Guerrilla Radio" to anyone else? Check out Boyd's Faps videos above & below!
Finally, here's Boyd's video of local extreme/death metal quartet Winkstinger from their opening set at The New A last week! Capturing another minute of brutal original action from the reunited band, this video is the only one of Boyd's from this show to get filters put it on it, turning it black and white with a little blurrier visuals. Next up, here's a preview of a huge concert with lots of advance notice, as Juno nominated Windsor hard/world rock trio The Tea Party will return to Sault Ste. Marie THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT at The Machine Shop! Following their successful free concert at The Roberta Bondar Pavilion last July, the band behind such hits as "Psychopomp" & "The Messenger" are back for another show full of hard rocking songs from their long career, including their new single "Black River", and hopefully there's a strong turnout for Jeff, Stuart, and Jeff's return to the Soo on Wednesday! Joining The Tea Party as openers (though only quietly acknowledged in local advertising) are Winnipeg southern rock quintet The Proud Sons, whose country-inflected original sound will prove an interesting contrast on Wednesday, but they have the talent and musicianship to go around nicely! Presented by Cabin Media, this is unfortunately not a free and all ages concert like last year, with tickets running for $40, but they are still available!
We'll close today with some new concert videos shot by the ever-generous Christopher Paci (who also filmed the above Tea Party video), as he was in attendance for Saturday night's OZbourne concert at The Canadian Nightclub, filming 11 videos that night for his YouTube channel. Kudos to Chris as usual, he goes above and beyond when he's at a show regarding filming the bands! Regarding the headliners, Chris filmed the Winnipeg-based Ozzy Osbourne tribute band covering Black Sabbath's "War Pigs", "Paranoid", "N.I.B.", and (part of) the song "Black Sabbath", plus five of Ozzy's own solo songs, namely "Bark At The Moon", "Flying High Again", "Crazy Train", "I Don't Know", and as embedded below, "No More Tears." Generally, OZbourne deliver the goods on these videos for Ozzy fans in music and presentation, and Chris got a nice close view of the band too, so fans should enjoy these clips!
