Defunct Local Band Profile Series: The Noochin' Lanterns

A day early, here's this month's Defunct Local Band Profile, continuing our monthly look at randomly selected local metal, hard rock, or punk artists from the past, all picked from our band links on the SMS, in order to spotlight them for current readers! This month's pick is a relatively recent one, and while somewhat short lived, their sound and membership will be familiar to many, so here's what you should know on them!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Noochin' Lanterns

Genre: Power Pop/Hard Rock

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Members: (Members not in their last known lineup in italics)

Paul Stanghetta (The Apocalypse Afterparty, The Fury), vocals/guitar
Tyler Gibson (Crucify The Whore, Rotopsy), guitar
Matthew Forster, bass
Amanda Brown* (The Apocalypse Afterparty), drums
Sarah Jackson, keyboard
Amber McKay (The Apocalypse Afterparty), synth

(*Amanda and Paul would get later get married, with Amanda taking Paul's last name, though this occurred shortly after The Noochin' Lanterns' final public update.)

Audio/Video: The Noochin' Lanterns would release one studio track, entitled "Drop The Gloves", to YouTube in October 2017, which their sister band The Apocalypse Afterparty would perform at The Soo's Got Talent two years later. Other media is limited, partly owing to their minimal live appearances, with one surviving clip being this 30 minute jam session video shared from Paul's personal Facebook page of their January 2017 trio lineup, albeit with obscured heads. Here are The Noochin' Lanterns playing their original song "2, 3, 4" at Live705's Easter Bash at The Rockstar Bar!

Info/Analysis: Launched under the slightly modified name The Noochy Lanterns by December 2016, this band was effectively a side project for the primary members of The Apocalypse Afterparty, albeit out of their masked alter egos and donning pajamas in concert. Self-described as bringing "a fresh, hard spin to an otherwise dull & E-minory local scene", the band would primarily be seen at private house parties (often at the former Mellow D's Underground) and a series of mid-year "pop-up" concerts with intentionally minimal advertising. The Noochin' Lanterns' highest profile gig was an abbreviated synth-free set at Live705's Easter Bash at The Rockstar Bar that April, which was notably delayed and led to a divisive response that I won't get into here. Despite the release of the professionally recorded "Drop The Gloves" that October, The Noochin' Lanterns quietly fell inactive by 2018.

Sonically, The Noochin' Lanterns resembled Paul's old band The Fury, albeit including guitars here, and their energetic sound had some eclectic covers to go along with their often hard-edged brand of power pop, and they definitely stood out locally back in 2017, especially if you saw one of their private or unannounced gigs. Of course, The Apocalypse Afterparty shared a lot of obvious similarities that carried over to their mask-free resurgence in 2019 & 2020, so follow the Stanghettas there to see what they've been up to!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! This series will return to Sault Michigan for the first time in 2021 next month, as our latest random selection is of a relatively recent band, namely local classic/hard rock cover band Highway 63, who just disbanded last summer! Look for this on or around March 10th, and for more news and notes on the site this week, with a post guaranteed by Friday! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Noochin' Lanterns & Tym Morrison) & This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

If you're a long-time follower of the Sault Metal Scene, you'll know that our weekend concert previews usually start to go online on Thursdays. That said, with a slow post-Halloween news stretch and two SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for TONIGHT connected to an artist already playing this weekend, I will make an exception and post our weekend concert previews on a Wednesday. I don't have a post lined up for tomorrow anyway, so hopefully this will work out this week! That all said, there's some intriguing concerts going down through Saturday, so here's what you should know!

Prolific local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will once again play a special Wednesday night matinee concert at Mark's Breakfast Plus TONIGHT, in addition to his ongoing matinee gigs at Gliss Steak & Seafood TOMORROW, FRIDAY, and SATURDAY! Apologies for the short notice on the Mark's show, it was only announced via it's Facebook page on Sunday, with Tym indicating on his personal Facebook page that he'd only just learned about the booking. TONIGHT'S return to the Market Mall restaurant will "mark" the third in an at least four week run of Wednesday evening shows there, with previously announced matinees coming there next Monday through Wednesday as well. I have no idea yet if Tym is playing every Wednesday (or beyond?!) at Mark's or if this is just a good fall run, but keep TONIGHT'S show in mind for acoustic hard rock cover action, not to mention his regular shows at The Quality Inn's house restaurant tomorrow through Saturday!

As usual for Tym's restaurant matinee concerts, all four of these shows (be they at Mark's TONIGHT or Gliss through Saturday) are 6:00 PM engagements with no announced cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale, these aren't your typical nightclub venues. Visit the official Facebook event pages linked here and above for more details, and here's Tym live!

Next up, here's one more surprise late notice concert taking place TONIGHT, as local rap/metal project The Apocalypse Afterparty and sister pop/hard rock quartet The Noochin' Lanterns will join forces for a show TONIGHT at The Speak Easy for what they're calling "Local Band Wednesday"! Apologies again for the short notice, this show was only announced yesterday via it's Facebook event page, and only came to our attention today. After months of these two bands only surfacing on stage for unannounced and intentionally short notice "pop-up shows", this at least has slightly more advance notice and advertising! In any event, it's nice to see them both back at it, so if you want to see how their current lineups sound, including new Noochin' Lanterns keyboardist Sarah Jackson, then head to Algoma University's campus bar TONIGHT! The two bands will be opening for an act known as The Oldest Soul, and while I cannot 100% confirm this is still the case, this was the name given to a prior acoustic solo project from Noochin' Lanterns frontman Paul Stanghetta. If so, this will be interesting to hear, and Paul has unplugged chops!

Also, this will be the first advertised show from these bands since the recent marriage of Paul and Noochin' Lanterns drummer Amanda Stanghetta (née Brown), so congratulations to the newly wedded couple! An early 8:00 PM start time is in effect for this presumably 19+ concert, though Algoma University students under 19 may be able to get in with student ID, and there is no advertised cover charge. Check the above links for more details, apologies again for the short notice, and here's The Noochin' Lanterns live!

We'll move to previously announced concerts next with a brief detour to the Eastern Upper Peninsula, as Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63 are advertised to return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace THIS FRIDAY & SATURDAY NIGHT! These shows will mark Highway 63's first announced gigs since rocking The American Legion in the Soo on Saturday, October 28th for their annual Halloween bash, the fourth straight featuring Highway 63 as musical entertainment. Profuse apologies for missing that show for coverage on the site, it was only announced by the band on their Facebook page that same morning, let alone on a day when we didn't have a news post scheduled. We'd have covered it on here had it we known with even a day's more notice, but hopefully it was a great time once again! As for this weekend's shows, these will be Highway 63's first at the Northern Pines Lounge in over a month, with only one more weekend scheduled there in 2017 after Saturday night.

Note that Kewadin's entertainment page does not list this weekend's concerts, but Highway 63 confirmed them on their Facebook page back in January. Expect 9:00 PM start times for this weekend's shows, which are both 21+ events with no announced cover charge. Check the above links for more details, and here's Highway 63 live!

Finally, we'll head to The Rockstar Bar for one more show, where local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires will play a special one-night-only concert THIS SATURDAY NIGHT themselves! Three weeks removed from their last show here, this talented veteran band will provide the musical entertainment for a fundraiser event in honour of the Community First Wild hockey team, who compete in the Soo Pee Wee Hockey League's Atom Major A division. While not a sort of fundraiser that often crosses our radar, it's always important to support young hockey players, so hopefully the Wild get a solid boost from this event on Saturday! Also, note that this is The Millionaires' only scheduled concert before Toystock in 2 and a half weeks, so if you're up for their hard rocking covers, you know where to be this weekend! A special $10 cover charge is in effect for this fundraiser, which has doors opening at 9:00 PM, and I expect this will be 19+. Check the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's The 3 Day Millionaires live!

As for Saturday night's Doors & Fours concert that was originally in this post, I have bumped it to our next news post (likely coming Friday) due to the late notice Speak Easy concert, in order to spread things out and not overstuff this post. It will be back, I promise! That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Raygun Cowboys), New Studio Material Postings, And More!!

Here's a new news post for your Saturday entertainment, so what can you look for today? A new live performance clip, new studio material from two local bands, and kicking things off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!

Edmonton psychobilly quintet The Raygun Cowboys will make their local concert debut on October 17th (one week from Tuesday) when they headline at The New American Pub! If you ever wanted to know how The Gutter Demons would sound if Glenn Danzig was their singer, The Raygun Cowboys would give you an idea, and with a punk swagger to go along with their standup bass and horn section, fans of psychobilly and related genres should keep this one in mind for Tuesday the 17th if they're at all able to come out mid-week! Promoter J.D. Pearce is currently looking for local openers for this show, so message him through the Facebook event page if you're interested in opening this one! A $7 cover charge is in effect for this 19+ show, which has a 9:00 PM start time. It's great to see another psychobilly concert hit The New A after six months, so check the above links for more on this new stop on The Raygun Cowboys' ongoing Canadian tour!

Next up, here's our first look at local alternative/hard rock trio The Din's second and final studio album, namely it's first single "Give Me A Reason", courtesy of their YouTube channel on Tuesday! A newer song of theirs from the spring, this joins other undetermined originals on their sophomore effort, which you can preview in recording session videos on their Facebook page. I can think of at least 7 other originals that aren't on their debut, not counting Mike Haggith solo covers, but we'll know soon what made the final cut. I won't review the song yet, as I fully expect to review their last album in full later this year, but check out "Give Me A Reason" below!

Also today, here's the latest from local pop/hard rock quintet The Noochin' Lanterns, so what have they been up to lately? Well, they played another publically unannounced show on September 29th at The Speak Easy, as per drummer Amanda Brown's personal Facebook page. If this was advertised publically in some form, my apologies for missing it, but it could have been another one of their "pop-up" shows from the summer that intentionally recieved little notice. In any event, that show marked their public debut with a new keyboardist, as Sarah Jackson has replaced Amber McKay in the group. A reason for Amber's departure has not been announced, but hopefully nothing bad happened, and they had been working with Sarah since at least June. That said, where can you can hear Sarah with The Noochin' Lanterns for the first time? In their first studio single "Drop the Gloves", as uploaded to Amanda's YouTube channel on Tuesday!

Continuing the hockey themes of their sister band The Apocalypse Afterparty's EP,  the song has almost a fast-paced folk bent with a punk attitude, and it fits with frontman Paul Stanghetta's local band work! Sarah's keyboard and synthesizer input almost sounds like a theremin in the bridge, which gives the song a spacey vibe, and it will be interesting to hear how she fits in with The Noochin' Lanterns in the coming months! Intriguing song, so give it a listen below, and stay tuned for more from them as it comes in!

Finally for today, here's a new jam session video from new local Foo Fighters tribute (and Cherry Crush sister band) The Soo Fighters! I should first clarify that this video is an unlisted upload on YouTube, but since the band publically shared it to their Facebook page this afternoon, I'd say it's fair game to acknowledge. A rendition of The Foos' classic "This Is A Call", this video is is our first look at the band with guitarist Jeremey Salatuk in tow, and it's a solid cover that better suits Jules' vocal range! The camera positioning isn't great though, as you see far more of the ceiling than you do Jeremey, but The Soo Fighters are coming along, so give their newest video a look below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates on the site in the coming days, including some long awaited videos from a big recent concert! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Din), Treble Charger Concert Videos, And More!!

With the peak of the summer season now in the rear view mirror, here's our first post of August, and it's full of recent concert videos, assorted updates, and to kick things off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next month! With all of that said, here's what you should know!

Local alternative/hard rock trio The Din will return to The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Center on Sunday, September 10th as a featured musical act during this year's "Loud & Proud" family fun event to kick off the annual Pridefest! Of course, Pridefest is a festival celebrating, raising awareness for, and supporting LGBTQ people, and this family fun event next month will help jump-start everything with children's activities, special guests, local vendors, and more, so visit the official Facebook event page for current details! Fans may recognize the former Mike Haggith & The Din from one of the old Bushplane Musical Madness events in 2013, but that was back in their acid jam days, so keep their return with their current sound in mind during this great community event! Local actor, entertainer, and theatre director Tim Murphy will also perform on September 10th, though it's not clear whether he'll be singing, doing ventriloquism, one of his impersonations, or something else.

This is a FREE & ALL AGES community event, and it has an early run time from 12:00-4:00 PM on September 10th, so feel free to bring the kids! It's great to see The Din sign on to perform at this "Loud and Proud" event and show their pride in the process, so visit the official Facebook event page and the above links for more details on it and Pridefest, and stay tuned for more from The Din later this week!

Next up, here's the last batch of recent concert videos from Christopher Paci's excellent YouTube channel, as he was on hand for this past Thursday's Treble Charger return show at LopLops Lounge! Chris was hard at work with the camera for the local indie/punk veterans' set, filming eight songs across seven videos, and they include their songs "How She Died", "Brand New Low", "Where Is My Mind", "Drive", "Red", "American Psycho", and as embedded below, two songs from their latest CD "Detox", namely "Hole In Your Head" and "Hundred Million". If you thought there were a lot of fans in camera view for Chris' videos from Mike Mikus' farewell show, then prepare yourself for these, as this was a sold out concert and it easily shows. The camera can be jittery, and you can only really see band members' heads, but the audio's fine, and Treble Charger sounded great in their first public show in two years, so give Chris' videos from Thursday a look above & below, and stay tuned for more!

Chris also filmed opening alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback playing two of their songs, namely their self-titled track and, as embedded below, "Catastrophe", so if you wanted to actually see the guys playing this song on Thursday (unlike in their soundcheck video where the camera fell over), here's your chance! These videos actually have better visuals than Treble Charger's, owing partly due to a smaller crowd on the floor prior to the headliners, though the camera sometimes pans upward a little too much during the performance. Still solid, and quite an event for A.D.S. to kick off, so give their videos a look above and below too!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or venue name:

  • In some maintenance to our listings of Sault Ontario concert venues, we have moved Cafe Natura, Coch's Corner, The Grand Theater, The Harp Bar & Grill, The Moose Lodge, and The Speak Easy to our inactive venue links, as none has hosted a public hard rock/punk concert in the past year that we know of (open mic nights don't count.) All are still active venues, and hopefully some SMS-coverable shows return to each location down the road!
  • Local power pop/hard rock quartet The Noochin' Lanterns have re-emerged in the past month by playing some outdoor pop-up concert sets, including at The Bellevue Park Bandshell on July 22nd (source here) and out at Harmony Beach on July 29th (source here.) Given their intentionally impromptu nature, we haven't been able to cover them here, but if this is a deliberate strategy to draw attention & word of mouth, hopefully it's working to their advantage! No word though on if recent Facebook page teasers involving jamming with guitarist Sarah Jackson mean that she's joined the band full time.
  • Downtown bar and country-leaning concert venue Reggie's Place was damaged in a fire in the apartments above the building on Sunday, which you can read more about at this link. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the fire forced evacuation of upstairs residents, and the bar will have to be closed a few days for repairs. The downtown Reggie's is best known to SMS readers as a frequent concert venue for Soundcheck and predecessor band Mourning Wood, though it's not yet known if the fire will impact any Soundcheck gigs there. Keep tabs with local news media for more on the fire!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post next! Thanks everyone!

Noochin' Lanterns & Them Updates, Mellow D's Next Private Concert, And More!!

On this Saturday afternoon, we have some news and updates to touch on, largely focusing on a newer local concert site and videos from bands that recently played there, but we also have some shorter assorted items to round things out. Now, here's what you should know!

Here's some new videos of bands at new local private concert venue Mellow D's Underground, which returns for it's (at least) fourth event tonight! Just in terms of that event, it'll take place tonight at 7:00 PM, have "an underground whiskey bar", and at least three bands, including newer local power punk quintet The Noochin' Lanterns. For what it's worth, a shared post notes that "The Apocalypse Afterparty invite you to come join us" tonight, implying that they'll end their 2 year concert hiatus for this event, but that hasn't been referenced elsewhere. Message promoters and the involved bands above to inquire about the address and extra details! As for the videos, The Apocalypse Afterparty shared this Noochin' Lanterns video from frontman Paul Stanghetta's personal Facebook page on Wednesday where the band (sans Amber McKay) sit around on a front step listening to the first mix of an original song of theirs, implied to be via Dustin Jones at Mission Control Studios.

There has been no public confirmation yet on if The Noochin' Lanterns are working on a debut CD (we're still waiting on "Bufflesnort" release info), but it's a nice sample, and uniquely framed, so check it out above! The remaining new videos were all filmed by Them frontman Tyler St. Amour and posted to Mellow D's Facebook page on Wednesday, though these may actually be delayed uploads from their March 1st private gig, given the lack of Amber or new guitarist Tyler Gibson. Three videos (titles unclear) were filmed from this set, linked here, here, and below, and while they were all unfortunately filmed in portrait orientiation, these capture vibrant and energetic originals that Paul, Matthew, and Amanda handle pretty well! And yes, they have their pajamas on here too! Also, the setup reminds me a tiny bit of Sykotyk Rampage's "Cave" that they hold jam sessions in, just with brighter lighting. Give these new Noochin' Lanterns videos a look!

Next up, the aforementioned Them have some new videos of their own, courtesy of their set at the Mellow D's Underground private show on February 24th (unless they played a later one without a public acknowledgement!) Posted to the grind/punk duo's Facebook page on Wednesday as well, these constitute the band's first promotion of a concert set since opening for Gorod at The Oddfellows Hall almost one year ago, so it's great to see that Tyler and Anthony are back at it, albeit at a private venue! One video can be seen at this link, while the longer clip is embedded below. Unfortunately filmed at a vertical camera angle again (though it does work better for a two man band), these capture Them at a good ferocity and energy level, but Tyler could be clearer on the mic, and announcements of song names would have helped. It's great to see Them alive and well, and hopefully they return to a public stage sooner or later, but give their Mellow D's clips a look above & below, and keep tonight's event in mind if you're curious!

Finally for today, here's three more assorted shorter news items from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by company or event name:

  • We have updated the link on the SMS for Castlegar, British Columbia internet radio station Energy Rock Radio (which broadcasted locally from 2008-2011), as their old "Radio Last Call" domain is no longer active, in favour of the more expected www.energyrockradio.com. Now that's accurately linked again, and check out Ryan and the Brew Crew's original programming and metal playlist there for an alternative radio option with local roots!
  • Have you been wondering why we didn't cover Tuesday's announced lineup reveal for June 18th's Rock The Border Music Fest? Assuming there's hard rock or punk on the bill, we would have, but the lineup announcement was postponed to yesterday as promoters CSA International were "waiting on one more contract", but yesterday's new deadline has came & went too. This event still has promise, especially as what looks like a larger scope rebound from CSA's postponed Quiet Riot concert, so stay tuned to the Facebook event page for updates! For what it's worth, the lineup will reportedly have an American, Canadian, and Australian band.
  • I have reluctantly removed former local recording studio Stereo Soul Studios from our "Other Local Metal Links" section due to the apparent expiry of their website's domain name, and I can't find a comparable replacement for our links. Best known for producing albums from bands like Gates of Winter and Woods of Ypres throughout the late 2000s, studio head Miguel Gauthier has since found success in photography and film in Los Angeles. Hopefully he keeps up the great work, and he's definitely been missed up here!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes next week! Thanks everyone!

Live705 Easter Bash Concert Review!!

Hey everyone, let's get our review of Saturday night's Live705 Easter Bash up on the site at last! Marking the promoters' first ever appearance at The Rockstar Bar, the show was well attended, especially by A Dire Setback's set, though much of the night saw the bands competing for fans' attention with the Maple Leafs game, especially as it went into the overtime periods. The teased giveaways were in the form of door prizes raffled between bands as the night rolled along, with free Domino's Pizzas, A&W gift sets, Tidal Records hats, A Dire Setback buttons, and a "golden ticket" for free entry to 3 upcoming Live705 shows all up for grabs (I didn't win anything, but I was 6 digits shy on a hat/button combo.) A.D.S. frontman Larry Babic even indicated that there were Easter eggs hidden throughout the bar, but I never saw such a thing, so I'm not sure if he was being facetious or just picked good hiding spots. Overall, the show has a nice atmosphere for Live705's venue debut, and there was even pizza on sale for fans to partake in, so things were set up very well!

The opening act and house DJ was supposed to be Douglas "Deejay Elementz" Agawa, but he dropped out of the show on late notice due to "unforeseen circumstances" (no one was any more specific.) Hopefully nothing bad happened, but Live705 found the perfect replacement, as Shane "DJ Seith" Erickson replaced him for the night, reprising his March Mash-Up role without breaking a sweat! Though advertised to begin at 8:30 PM, he more or less began when doors opened at 8:00 PM, mixing tunes for a nice long time for early fans! If you've seen Seith live, you'll recognize some of the songs from prior performances like his "It Takes Two"/Lyn Collins mix, and he did bring back some of the hard rock action missing from March, like Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, and even some sound bytes from the movie School of Rock. DJ Seith was on point despite the short notice, and by set's end, he was getting suitably intense, even mixing songs with his hands behind his back!

Starting after the next set, DJ Seith also played between bands in a house DJ role, setting up his turntables away from the stage. He was fine in this role (we know he's done this before), and it extended the good vibes from his formal set throughout the night. Overall, entertaining for fans of turntable mixing, and Seith continues to show why he's a key performer in this area!

Next was folk rock solo artist Jacob Quarrell, and true to the show's advertising, he only credited himself by his initials J.Q., rather than his established solo project name Shit Creek Survivor. No word on why that name wasn't used, especially as it's still the name of his Facebook page, though for what it's worth, he hasn't posted there in over a month. Regardless of name, Jacob played a quality set for fans familiar with his original material, including tracks like "Swinging", "When This Is Done", and "1,075". Showcasing a natural ease on stage, and a sound bigger than his small guitar would imply, J.Q. has an effective voice and a good casual rapport, though at times, some backing instrumental accompaniment would be an asset at times. Not a bad set to ease early fans into the groups to come, and hopefully we hear more from Jacob/J.Q./Shit Creek Survivor soon!

The night's first band was local punk trio Stegadeth, who played to their usual standards with a fun set of familiar covers and an increasing amount of originals! Tackling classics from acts like The Ramones, GG Allin, and Bad Religion with conviction, the band also showcased their sound on originals like the debuting "The Song Not Called 'The Wire'" and their fan favourite adoption of T-Rex Manning's "She Banged The Mayor", with friends of the band singing along during the choruses. Fun to see, especially with at least one visiting from out of town! Stegadeth continued to showcase their talents and chemistry on Saturday night, with Bill Bennett improving steadily on vocals, though Tiffany Stocco needs to project her own voice a little more, and she and Bill could both stand to be more active and lively on stage. Solid set overall, and hopefully Stegadeth continue to build on things this year!

The Easter Bash hit it'd midpoint with a set by local indie rock quartet K.I.C.K., and if you're anxious to hear their upcoming debut CD, you'll have been happy to hear all of the newer songs that they played on Saturday night! Though the guys were coy late in their set about songs that would or wouldn't be on the album, they still stuck to a set that (by & large) contained songs I hadn't seen them play live before, like "Love/Hate", the unusually heavy "Never Want To See You Again", and "You'll Never Find Me", among many others. The lighting on stage seemed to be getting to frontman Simon Shearsby early on, hence breaking from the band's buttoned-shirt motif, but he sounded good, and he and Tyson Letang handled the guitar work fine on these new songs, with Aaron Dunn keeping up things on the drumming end himself! The Keep It Cool Kids did indeed keep it cool on Saturday, and best of luck as their CD nears completion!

Live705's flagship band hit the stage next, as A Dire Setback brought their punk/alternative originals to the stage with an enthusiastic and high energy set of their own! The guys played 8 originals like "Forget This Memory", "Nightmares", and their new self-titled track, alongside their punk cover of OneRepublic's "Counting Stars", and they attracted the liveliest crowd of the night, as seen with the fans on the floor late in their set! If you've seen A Dire Setback live, there won't have been many surprises, but everyone delivered a solid performance, with Larry Babic's singing fitting in as nicely as ever, Chris Nielsen a sparkplug of activity throughout on guitar, and Nick Kainula's drum work was steady and a very suitable compliment! Title track aside, there wasn't a lot new to add, but A Dire Setback delivered a fun set that wasn't a setback for them as a band, and hopefully there's more to come from them soon!

Now, there's a lot of divisive talk about the last two timeslots online today, so this is what I will say about things. On Saturday night, there were huge delays before The Noochin' Lanterns' set, leading to them only starting their set at 1:00 AM, 45 minutes behind schedule. This resulted in their set being chopped to just 4 songs, and Electric Church not beginning until after 1:30 AM. I will not pass judgement on anything else that happened on Saturday, or throw anyone under the bus regarding the set times or delays, other than to say that I hope things can be worked out by all parties.

As for The Noochin' Lanterns set (their first ever at a public concert), they sounded good, and had a fun look also, with everyone dressed in pajamas for their set! If nothing else, they were comfy. If you're not familiar with the former Noochy Lanterns, their sound resembles that of frontman Paul Stanghetta's old band The Fury, just with guitars and more of a power pop style that even featured a bit of rap, and on the closer, a "Pumped Up Kicks" sample?! Paul actually played guitar rather than his usual bass role (Matthew Forster handled that), and he and Tyler Gibson played off each other well, even though this is a huge departure from Tyler's grindcore roots. Also, props to new mom Amanda Brown, who's showing promise on drums! Unfortunately, The Noochin' Lanterns set was cut short before new synth player Amber McKay could play for the set's intended second half, but hopefully we hear from the band's full lineup soon, and despite the hang-ups, it'll be interesting to see where things go for them!

FYI, there was no public reference made to the planned release of sister band The Apocalypse Afterparty's "Bufflesnort" EP on Saturday. It's possible that The Noochin' Lanterns' set's abbreviation eliminated the chance, but The A.A. haven't posted on their Facebook page since then either to elaborate on the EP. In other words, stay tuned for presumed updates!

With the delays, Garden River blues/hard rock trio Electric Church's abbreviated set began later than anticipated, but the crowd chanting their name pre-set indicated that they were still eager to see the guys in action, and they delivered! I couldn't stay for the full duration, but with originals like "Muddy Waters" and "Ain't Got None" in their repertoire, you know that they had remaining fans' interest! Compared to their March Mash-Up set, they largely delivered a similar set, and while I wish the guys showed a little more energy on stage, the late start time may have impaired that. Spencer Pine's guitar skill is still beyond his years, and his smooth voice fits their songs very well, while Elijah Nielsen and Beau Whitfield were solid on bass and drums in tandem, and when you consider how young these guys are, imagine how good they'll be as the years roll along! Solid way to end the night, and hopefully we hear much more from Electric Church soon!

Overall, this was a fun concert, despite the late delays, and everyone played to their strengths for a good night of entertainment! It's worth noting that, in a throwaway line between bands, DJ Seith indicated that this event would be occurring monthly. If that's true, that'll be very interesting, so stay tuned in case that's elaborated on! You can check out our photos from the show at this link or via our Facebook page, and as for videos, here's DJ Seith mid-set, Jacob Quarrell playing "Daddy's Little Girl", Stegadeth playing "Kingdom of Ashes", K.I.C.K. playing "You've Got It Bad", A Dire Setback playing "Everlasting Despair", The Noochin' Lanterns playing "2, 3, 4", and Electric Church playing "Carey Baby"!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more news and this month's poll results and new poll next! Thanks everyone!

Live705 Easter Bash & Project 906 Concert Previews, Plus An Album Release!!

As promised, here is the remainder of this weekend's concert previews, but with the first concert having a lot to say, and a newly confirmed album release within it, we're extending our preview of it to give everything proper emphasis. I know there's a few other recent topics awaiting coverage on here, but trust me, they (and our preview of Monday's Id Iota show) are coming next! Now, here's what you should know for concerts tomorrow!

We'll start with the Live705 Easter Bash, which goes down TOMORROW NIGHT at The Rockstar Bar! Hosting their first ever show at this venue, and breaking from past bi-monthly concert scheduling for one even sooner, Live705 have stacked the deck beyond bands to include giveaways of some description, including band merchandise, A&W paraphernalia, and tickets to upcoming concerts, but what are the specific prizes? Be at The Rockstar Bar tomorrow to find out! A suitably familiar but diverse lineup will be headlined by young blues/hard rock trio Electric Church in their own Rockstar Bar debut, with new local pop/hard rock quartet The Noochin' Lanterns making their public concert debut, as well as their first live appearance since officially changing their name from The Noochy Lanterns for unannounced reasons, and their first set of any kind with new guitarist Tyler Gibson & (in a new confirmation) former Apocalypse Afterparty drummer Amber McKay on the synth.

With a (somewhat) new name and expanded lineup, how will The Noochin' Lanterns do on Easter Saturday, especially in comparison to their private trio sets? Come on out tomorrow to find out! Flagship Live705 alt-punk favourites A Dire Setback will also play tomorrow, joining indie rock quartet K.I.C.K. (in their second show in as many nights) and rising punk/metal trio Stegadeth to round out the evening's band portion. Folk rock solo artist Shit Creek Survivor (promoted under Jacob Quarrell's initials J.Q. for still unannounced reasons) will also perform tomorrow, with Underground Empire Records' own Deejay Elementz mixing tunes to kick things off, so don't be late for all of the action! It's also worth noting as a linked note that local rap/metal project The Apocalypse Afterparty will finally release their debut EP "Bufflesnort" TOMORROW, and copies will be available at this show, given the involvement of their "songwriters" with The Noochin' Lanterns!

Select stores will apparently have stock too, but where will those be, and what formats will the apparently non-CD release be sold in? All will apparently be revealed tomorrow, but it's certainly been a long time coming for "Bufflesnort", especially with The Apocalypse Afterparty not playing live for over two years, so kudos to them for finally getting this EP on sale, and yes, it's very likely for a review on the SMS this month! As for the Live705 Easter Bash proper, this 19+ concert will start at 8:00 PM, and admission is $10, unless you have one of those $2-off vouchers obtained from performers, or found one of the Easter eggs on bulletin boards plastered throughout town (if you have one, you're in free.) The Easter Bash sounds like a fun way to spend Easter Saturday, and with this being a holiday weekend, why not come out and enjoy the music, including a heaping amount of punk and hard rock? Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and for a preview, here's a new video of Electric Church in action!

Filmed live and personally uploaded by A Dire Setback guitarist Chris Nielsen, and then shared by the band on their own Facebook page, this comes from Electric Church's set at The New American Pub last week when they opened for Return For Refund. This actually has over 18 minutes of their set from last Thursday, including 4 songs like "Ain't Got None" and a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady". Despite being filmed in portrait orientation, Chris got good audio of this talented trio at their hard edged bluesy best, so check it all out below, and be sure to check them out tomorrow at Live705's Easter Bash!

Finally for today, here's one more concert preview, as Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Project 906 will return to The Strongs Tavern in nearby Eckerman TOMORROW NIGHT! The only full hard rock show of the weekend that we can find in the E.U.P., this will mark the Ten Kings successors' first concert in Eckerman of the year, and first show anywhere in two weeks. Project 906 are continuing to entertain fans as they've entered their second year together, and their hard rocking covers should provide a solid musical backdrop at The Strongs Tavern tomorrow, so don't miss out! A 9:00 PM start time is advertised for this concert, which is a 21+ event, and does not have an announced cover charge. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and for a preview, here's Project 906 live!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Id Iota), AlgomA/Pillory Concert Videos, And More!!

Before we kick off our April Fools prank-free news post, just a heads up that the postponed Quiet Riot concert at The Machine Shop is not taking place on May 25th as originally stated yesterday. SooToday and varying social media postings now state that the show is postponed "until a later date", complete with the deletion of the show's Facebook event page, and refunds are available at point of purchase. I know that a lot of pessimism and sarcasm floating around online either regarding the promoters or Quiet Riot themselves, but hopefully things work themselves out so this concert gets rescheduled in some form down the road!

Now, we have some new concert videos, recent assorted updates, and first, a delayed LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, as local alternative hard rock quartet Id Iota will rock The New American Pub on Monday, April 17th for an Easter Monday concert where they'll open for Calgary psychedelic pop band Windigo & New Jersey surf rock quartet Dentist! Just a few days removed from opening for K.I.C.K. at LopLops on Good Friday, this talented quartet will continue their upward momentum with another set where you're sure to hear some material from their forthcoming second CD, so keep them in mind! Though the touring acts don't largely fall into our general coverage range, Windigo's alt-pop originals should appeal to genre fans, and Dentist harbour some punk influences on some of their own surf rock material, so don't bypass either on this late stop on their spring tour of Canada! Note that Windigo's concert calendar says this show is being held at The Gore Street Cafe, but I never saw reference to the laundromat elsewhere, so it likely changed before it's local advertising began.

Though the Facebook event page was launched by Id Iota, seemingly implying it's self-promoted, they give "special thanks" to Six, Two, Oh. & Ears and Eyes, so there is at least some assistance from those two agencies. This 19+ concert has a $5 cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time, so check the above links for more details, and if you love indie rock with some heavier tinges, be at The New A on Easter Monday!

Next up, we have some new videos from Thursday night's AlgomA-headlined concert at The New American Pub, courtesy of Christopher Paci's YouTube channel once again, in his first concert video postings since the Pop Evil show in February. Kudos to him for getting some more solid footage, it's always welcomed when he breaks out his camera! Before we touch on AlgomA's video, just a note that the band has finally unveiled their tour schedule for their European debut, which will see them play largely in Germany over a two week span starting on Tuesday, all alongside German sludge punk duo WeedWolf, though Swiss and Dutch gigs are also listed. Obviously, this is a huge opportunity to spread the Northern Ontario doom metal gospel overseas, so hopefully things work our well this month! Chris' video of AlgomA's New A set from Thursday is of their song "Phthisis" from last year's split with Chronobot, and it's a suitably ferocious rendition of one of their shorter songs, so give it a look below, and good luck on tour, show Europe what the Soo can do!

Chris didn't film late-added opener Chase Wigmore, but he did film local death metal trio Pillory playing their original "Wasting" on Thursday night, and while it captures the guys in suitably brutal form, the camera angle is worse. On the AlgomA video, Chris was more or less front & center to film them, but I think he remained at a table for Pillory, and the angle made it so the far left of the video is obscured by a wall, partially cutting frontman Robert Sartini from view early on. Still a quality look at this resurgent local metal band, so give their clip a look below as well!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • I have moved local metal cover trio Caveman Morrison back to our inactive band links, as they have not made a public update since their return show at The Rednecks Saloon's relaunch party one year ago tomorrow. It was great to see the guys back after a 2+ year hiatus, but that now appears to have been a one-off set, especially thanks to frontman Tym Morrison's busy weekly schedule of solo concerts. Don't miss Tym at Gliss and/or the Barrelhouse this year, or James White & Johnny Belanger with Handsome Sandwich and their other separate projects!
  • Local punk/metal band Jack Spades' new lineup will hit the road for a return to the annual Spiderfest in Meyersburg on Friday, July 14th, where they'll open for 2013 local concert headliners The Bunchofuckingoofs. Hopefully this continues the band's momentum following June's CKY show, and good luck on the road this summer! For reference, the band teased a staggered reveal of their new lineup on their Facebook page starting last week, but nothing has been posted to confirm new or returning members since then.
  • New local power pop/hard rock band The Noochy Lanterns have added Crucify the Whore's Tyler "Ringsnaps" Gibson to their lineup on guitar, making them a quartet (for now), as per their Facebook page last week. This is a departure from Tyler's usual grindcore & death metal base, but the band indicated that they may be even heavier with him enlisted, and they've also teased a planned addition of a female synth player to their lineup, identity not publically known yet. Don't miss The Noochy Lanterns' public concert debut at The Rockstar Bar on April 15th for Live705's Easter Bash!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Easter Bash), New Video Uploads, And Much More!!

After two days of Battle of the Bands Rewind Profiles, we're back with a new news post on this Wednesday morning, so if you're wondering where coverage of the LOCAL CONCERT ALERT toplining this post was, here's your answer! We also have some new videos and assorted notes to round things out, so here's what you should know!

Local concert promoters Live705 will host their previously teased Easter weekend concert on Saturday, April 15th when they put on their first ever event at The Rockstar Bar! Breaking from their bi-monthly scheduling for their fourth concert, this show will feature giveaways ranging from band merchandise to concert tickets to even some type of items from A&W, which is a unique attraction for the holidays, so keep the added incentive in mind! Young local blues/hard rock trio Electric Church will headline on Easter Saturday in their Rockstar Bar debut, while new local pop/hard rock trio The Noochy Lanterns (featuring Apocalypse Afterparty & The Fury alumni) will co-headline in their public concert debut and first gig, private or otherwise, following their recent break, so come to see how they do on a big stage! Live705's flagship alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback are also lined up for April 15th, alongside indie rock quartet K.I.C.K. (fresh off of their LopLops show on the 14th) and newer local punk/metal trio Stegadeth.

Remaining acts include folk rock solo artist Shit Creek Survivor (listed on event promotion under Jacob Quarrell's initials J.Q. for unannounced reasons) & Deejay Elementz, a veteran local DJ from Underground Empire Records, whom featured A Dire Setback at their YouTube Party last year. Strong & diverse lineup with Live705 favourites and newcomers alike, so don't miss out! This 19+ show has an 8:00 PM start time on April 15th, and while admission is $10, Live705 is again utilizing vouchers for $2 off admission rather than selling $8 advance tickets, so contact performers if you want a voucher. This should be a fun concert, so check the official Facebook event page for ongoing details!

Next up, here's the latest installment of local alternative/hard rock trio The Din's ongoing cover video series (now no longer labelled as being monthly), as posted to their YouTube channel on Sunday! The cover choice won't be surprising for fans who've seen The Din's recent concerts, as this is of their version of The Tragically Hip's "Blow At High Dough", as recorded at Mission Control Studios, where The Din have done studio work at. The wide angle shot of the band isn't optimal, especially as the table the camera is on eats up a lot of that view, but the cover is solid and familiar for fans of The Hip and The Din in equal measure, so check it out below!

Also, here's a new YouTube find from former No Arrow drummer and Faithless Sin guitarist Joe Falco, who appears to have begun work as a solo musician once again! Apart from his former Joe Falco Experience solo project, he has recently been posting acoustic blues originals to his new Reverbnation page, and while his singing voice could be a little rangier, he has talent and adapts well to bluesier tracks, especially on "Malevolent Moonlight", which is asking for full band accompaniment. Over on his new YouTube channel, he's mostly focusing on outlining the specifications of and reviewing his Gibson Les Paul guitar, plus this video where he chats about songwriting, but he did upload one solo performance cover there, where he tackles Live's "Dolphins Cry". Not a bad cover, if very reserved, and Joe should project his voice a little more to improve on his clarity. Give Joe's recent solo material a look above & below, and hopefully he keeps at it!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last little while, and as usual or these brief news groupings, these are in alphabetical order by artist or organization name:

  • I have switched the link for local musicians union The American Federation of Musicians, Local 276 from their now closed website to their information page on the A.F.M.'s website. The local union can be handy to help work through legal red tape and paperwork for copyright and playing out of the country, so keep it in mind if your band aspires to do anything that requires paperwork!
  • A local rhythm guitarist named Eric Rosset is looking to join a local band that plays rock, punk, metal, or alternative genres ideally, though he'd play anything other than country, and he can do backing vocals too. I'm not familiar with Eric musically, but if you're interested in trying Eric out, message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from yesterday!
  • Cheboygan, Michigan rock radio station Rock 105 (which gets fringe reception in the Soo) has re-obtained it's former Glen Arbor signal at 95.5 FM, and the station broadcasts as Rock 105 & 95.5 now! This mirrors the then Real Rock two station network from 2009-2013 before 95.5 (then WJZJ, now WGFE) became a simulcast of Onaway adult contemporary station Easy 106.3 as WQEZ. This won't directly affect local coverage of Rock 105 aside from on-air naming, but keep WGFE 95.5 FM in mind if you're driving out to Traverse City!

That's all for today, but stay tuned or weekend concert previews next! Thanks everyone!

A New Local Band, Quiet Riot Concert Updates, And Much More!!

It's time for another new news post at the SMS, as we continue to clear out a recent backlog, so what will you find below? Some assorted recent news and updates, big updates to a major upcoming concert, and both an addition and removal to our active Sault Ontario band links, so let's start with the former!

We have a new local band to add to our band links, and they are The Noochy Lanterns, the new project from "songwriters" of The Apocalypse Afterparty! Also named The Noochin' Lanters in some postings, their Facebook page self-describes them as a "pop band" who are bringing "a fresh, hard spin" to the local scene. Featuring former The Fury singer/bassist Paul Stanghetta alongside guitarist Matthew Forster and Paul's girlfriend Amanda Brown on the drums, the band shares some musical similarities with The Fury, only with a guitarist present and more of a hard edged alternative/power pop style. Compared to The Apocalypse Afterparty, The Noochy Lanterns have a more curious name, but arguably have a more accessible sound, so keep that in mind if you're more familiar with The A.A. This newer trio made their live debut on February 10th at the new private venue Mellow D's Underground, but all of their gigs so far have been private or in unlisted locations, with a March 1st private jam being their final gig before a teased "big break", reasons and length both unclear.

The Noochy Lanterns have four videos on their Facebook page, including this 30 minute jam video shared from Paul's Facebook page (which obscures all band members' heads, intentionally or not), while three jam session clips can be seen at this link too, all from the same day, totalling over 12 minutes in length. So far, I like what I'm hearing from The Noochy Lanterns, who have a fun sound, but their sound could be filled out at times (perhaps with a second guitarist or bassist?), and at least in these jam clips, the band could be more animated. Good start overall though, so hopefully the "big break" isn't too long, and check out The Noochy Lanterns above & below!

Next up, here's some updates concerning March 30th's Quiet Riot-headlined concert at The Machine Shop on March 30th, starting with a surprising lineup change for the headlining Los Angeles classic metal quartet, as they parted ways with singer Seann Nicols last week, and replaced him with 2011 American Idol finalist James Durbin, who is one of the few metal/hard rock singers to make a lengthy run on that series. You can read more on the change at this link and via other metal news websites. This is very surprising to hear, especially so soon from showtime, but the show is still on, and James definitely has the pipes to fit in with Quiet Riot, so hopefully he helps fans feel the noise just as well on the 30th! As for the somewhat mysterious Sudbury metal band The Wring that's opening, promoters CSA International Ontario posted this video of a Wring studio track onto the Facebook event page late last month, and while I still don't know much about the band or their lineup, they have a good sound with solid guitar and fittingly raspy vocals, and it's a nice teaser for their set!

There is also a contest ongoing on the event age linked above where you could win tickets to the show, which involves liking and sharing the requisite contest post, and inviting 10 friends to the event page. 2 winners will receive tickets, backstage passes, and meet & greets with Quiet Riot, so enter by Saturday to try your luck! Finally, this video copy of the radio commercial for the show from Rock 101 can be checked out below, as shared to the event page on Saturday, and while the sampled music is exclusively early 1980s hits with that lineup, it's a well made ad, and Scott Cook sells it nicely in the voiceover! Check it out below, and get your tickets A.S.A.P.!

Also, we have a band to likely move to our inactive band links, they being young local power pop/glam trio Caroline Divine. While the band has not publically clarified their status, they have not posted any public updates since the end of 2015, last being seen publically as Jesse Merineau's backing band during his Speak Easy Battle of the Bands-winning set one year ago on Friday. Also, frontman Anthony Marcello did move out of town for a time last summer, and when his bandmates backed up Jesse last fall alongside guitarist Mitchell Harris, the Caroline Divine name was not referenced online. Succeeding The Frasiers with a heavier sound upon their debut in mid-2015, Caroline Divine (not to be confused with Stillbroke's late-era name Borderline Divine) showed plenty of promise with sets at Rotaryfest Stage 2, Lopstock, and Go Skateboarding Day, and began recording sessions for a debut album, but updates ground to a halt after opening for Dany Laj and The Looks at LopLops in December 2015, aside from their Jesse Merineau involvement.

Alongside bands like Gnaeus, K.I.C.K., and the now-defunct Pixo Control, Caroline Divine looked like a promising outfit in this new cluster of young alternative and indie rock bands in the Soo, and their retro/modern fusion set them apart to be sure! I have no idea what happened to them, but hopefully Anthony, Brenden, and Devin reunite in the future and pick up where they left off!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • In their first Facebook page posting since the surprise release of their debut album "The End of Life" two months ago, new local black metal solo project Abhorrent Forest revealed that they have been writing new material, and in the meantime, posted a cover of "Forests in Fire & Gold" by Ukranian black metal band Drudkh onto their Bandcamp page. This is a quality cover that has a somewhat upbeat yet grim vibe and strong guitar work, though Abhorrent Forest's version does not contain vocals. Check it out above!
  • Take this with a grain of salt until there's official verification, but the Wikipedia page for local indie/punk veterans Treble Charger currently notes that Richard D. Mulligan replaced touring drummer Jason Pierce last summer. Now, I can't find anything tying a Richard Mulligan to Treble Charger beyond Wikipedia articles and copies therein (not to mention, the band hasn't posted a public update or played live since mid-2015), but as a rule, we don't treat Wikipedia as a source, as anyone can change most articles and often don't have to include sources there. If there's official word about a drummer change and a resumption of activity, we'll let you know!
  • Just in case anyone was awaiting word, it does not appear that there will be a third annual VM Radio Battle of the Bands at The Canadian Nightclub this month (if there was, we'd have long heard about band registrations at this point.) While there's been no public confirmation on the multi-night battle being cancelled or retooled, the drop in competing bands from 11 to 5 last year can't have been a good sign. Hopefully we see a new battle of the bands of any kind in the near future, as they're fun events, and I've been more than happy to volunteer as a judge at them!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates as this week rolls along! Thanks everyone!
