LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Caveman Morrison), Rockstar Bar Updates, Woods IV Info, And More!!!

Greetings everyone! Let's kick this post off with, you guessed it, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!!

It's been a long time coming for me to hear about shows from this band, but it's great to see! Caveman Morrison are back on the live scene! They'll be playing at the newly opened Rockstar Bar (located at The Algonquin Hotel) on December 11th and 12th! I presume both shows begin at 10:00 PM, no cover charge has been announced yet. These are the first Caveman shows I've been able to report on the SMS since their return, and not a moment too soon! As you may remember, Caveman Morrison are the metal cover band fronted by Tym Morrison, who you can catch at some local venues with his acoustic solo sets (including shows this weekend!) These will be the bands' first local shows (to my knowledge) in four months!

I haven't seen these guys in like, forever! Pencil me in as an attendee, I can't pass this up! Also will be nice to check out The Rockstar Bar, it sounds like a nice venue! Also, a lineup change for Caveman Morrison, bassist Ryan Disano (ex-Time of Ruin) has left the band, and has been replaced at that position by Rick White, who you may also recognize as guitarist for bands like Frightlight and Fitswitch! Before I completely drift away from Rockstar Bar talk, their official website has been updated with more upcoming shows, and there's a couple things potentially worth mentioning. It lists a Boxing Day show featuring local hard rockers Half Past. The band has not confirmed this yet, so I won't call it as a concert yet. If confirmed, it will be their first show since Halloween at Coch's Corner, but let's wait for additional word. Also, a show called "Rock of Ages" is scheduled there on December 18th. All it says on the site is it will feature 3 bands playing the best of music from the 60s to 80s. No metal implications there, but if I hear any exciting word from that show either, I'll let you guys know! Either way, great to see them putting the "rock" in "Rockstar Bar"!

Next up, I believe copies of the new Woods of Ypres CD, "Woods IV: The Green Album" should be showing up in your mailboxes today! How do I know this? Because mine came in today!!!! The jewel case was cracked when I opened the package, I guess the bubble wrap failed in protecting it's metalness! No matter, I just swapped a new jewel case and all is well! First thoughts? Well, I'm actually surprised that the Necramyth CD, "Slaughter of the Seoul", was part of the overall packaging, I figured it'd come in a separate jewel case or in a different sleeve. But hey, having both combined outlines the specialness of it! Production quality is really high, especially on the CD labels! And kudos for including lyrics, now I can sing along without sounding like a tool!

Everything looks great, and on first listen, everything sounds great too! I won't talk too much about songs yet (leave that for the December 1st review), but I will confirm this: "Track 17" from Stereo Soul Studios' official website is actually track 15, "My Long Life, In The 'Limbo Union'"! As for the Necramyth bonus CD, I won't give a full review, but I'll share with you guys my thoughts and what to expect. Expect some really brutal death metal with hints of black metal! David Gold pounds the blast beats effectively, and aside from the intro track, it's one brutal relentless assault! Great freebie! Well played and perfect to mosh to! It'd be great to see Necramyth here if it were possible! Get the pre-order with the bonus disc while you still can, it's a good deal!

What to talk about next...oh yeah, Battle of the Bands updates! Just got some clarification on some things we haven't heard yet! The prizes have been announced, and the winning band will recieve $300 and the opportunity to open for Sault natives The Inner City Surfers (featuring Lion Ride frontman Mikey Hawdon on drums) at a show December 22nd, which will also be at The Speakeasy! The second place band will recieve $200, and third place will win $100! The prize money comes from the entrance fees paid by competing bands, so you could win your money back, and then some! The remaining $100 is going to charity! Also, doors for the battle will open at 6:30 PM, and bands will get to play three songs! Remember, there won't be metal bands on the bill unless YOU apply, so get on that! The talent's there, you just have to send an entry in! It's in exactly two weeks, on December 1st, so keep that in mind!

And finally for today, I've found even better video from Friday's Ace Frehley concert! It comes courtesy of Duane Roy, who's uploaded video clips from recent local shows under the online handle "WawaDuane" that I've previously featured on here! The clip below is of Ace Frehley playing his biggest solo hit, "New York Groove", at the show, and the quality's excellent! Duane also let me know that on his YouTube channel, he has a new video up from his trip to see Metallica in Grand Rapids! Also, Duane told me about a book he's written, entitled "Castle Stories: A Rock n' Roll Scrapbook", which documents concerts and the photos of them from concerts at the old Castle Farms in Charlevoix, Michigan! I know my uncle went there to see Ozzy Osbourne back in the day, I bet it's a great read! Battle Of The Bands, Woods Of Ypres, Shift, And Brendan Christie Updates!

Hey guys, more news to share with everyone today, and let us begin with this: Attention local bands and band members! Here's what you need to know so far about the Battle of the Bands next month!

Erin Lemke from The Algoma University Students' Union has revealed more details about the Battle of the Bands to take place at The Speakeasy on December 1st, which is two weeks from tomorrow! First of all, how can you enter your band? Well, as I said yesterday, your band must be locally based and have some recorded material. The band entrance fee is $100, which does sound steep, but it's to ensure bands will participate and not pull out. Besides, it's for United Way charities, and this could be a big opportunity, so I guess it depends on if you have the cash and are willing to pay it. Fees won't have to be paid until after the final bands are chosen.

There are only spots open for SEVEN bands, so get your entries in while you can! To enter your band for consideration for the battle, e-mail Erin at elemke@algomau.ca this information: Your band's name, the names of the band members, contact information (including at least one e-mail address & phone number), your genre of music, an internet link to check out your music/videos, length of time playing together, whether you're a local band or not, any potential sound requirements, if you're prepared to pay the entrance fee, and why you want to enter the battle!

The battle will take place December 1st at 7:00 PM, with entered bands to show up early for set up. Tickets will be $7 for Algoma University students with a student card, and $10 for anyone else. No word yet on prizes or if the battle's all ages or not, I'll keep you guys posted! Also, judge Dustin Jones pulled out due to concert obligations with The Rising Tide, a replacement is to be announced. Get full details as they come in for this battle at this location, and remember to e-mail elemke@algomau.ca for questions and battle entries! Band announcements may come by this weekend, and I've seen interest from Bring The Fallen & Dirty Virgin members on Facebook, which is a potentially good sign!

Next up, more updates from Woods of Ypres, concerning their new release, Woods IV: The Green Album! A pair of online stores are now selling the album, and lucky for those of you that didn't pre-order, not only is it cheaper there than the initial pre-orders were, but it also includes the special bonus disc! And thanks to these online sellers, I can now confirm that the bonus disc is......."Slaughter of the Seoul", the new album from South Korean death metal band Necramyth, who Woods frontman David Gold drummed for during the recording of the album! I assumed it'd be an album of Woods of Ypres live tracks or a compilation of some sort, but this works, it's a good freebie! I likely won't review it in December (it isn't technically a "local" album), but Necramyth are brutal as hell, and death metal fans won't want to ignore them! Also, "Slaughter of the Seoul" and "The Green Album" share more than just similar album art, the online sales sites state that Necramyth's new album "actually tied into the 'The Green Album' conceptually and artistically." So there you go!

Now that the cat's out of the bag in terms of the bonus disc, here's how you can buy the album online if you haven't already! Visit here to buy the album from Century Media Records, and here to buy it from The End Records! From The End Records, it's $15.99, but it's just $14.11 right now from Century Media, so that might be your best option to getting "The Green Album", but either way, you're saving cash! More details on the CD's release to come, including likely more reviews, when it will be available in Sault-area stores, and my thoughts on the album before my official review on December 1st! And before anyone asks, I AM NOT linking to torrents of it, if any are online. Support the band and actually BUY the album, for god's sake!

And finally, two quick updates from some local metal performers. First, have you noticed a lack of news from Sault Michigan hard rockers Shift this month? Well, there's a very good reason for that! Shift frontwoman Amy Beairl and husband/guitarist Joey are expecting another baby, which is due in March! So the band are currently on hiatus, but hope to be back to play Pigfest in Ishpeming next June! They have mentioned this on their MySpace page, so there's my source. Congratulations to Amy and Joey on the upcoming arrival! Also, Sault Ontario solo artist Brendan Christie has uploaded some new songs to his official MySpace page! Check out the newest ones at this location, the new songs are the ones with the lowest viewcount. I'm really digging "Road To Insanity", I can't wait to hear what's up Brendan's sleeve next!

A New Battle Of The Bands, Ace Frehley Updates, Nixxon Dixxon Videos, And More!

How's everyone doing on this fine Sunday? Before I get to some news, let me recommend that you all check out my review of Stillbroke's debut EP, "Never Enough", immediately below this post! It's a good album, well worth your money! But now it's time to update everyone on some news and updates from the Sault-area metal world, and first, something that may interest those of you in a band!

The Algoma Univeristy Students' Union, in cooperation with The United Way, are holding a Battle of the Bands on December 1st! It will be at The Speakeasy, and it will be a fundraiser, with all proceeds going to local charities. Any local bands with recorded material are eligible to enter! Now there's not a lot of detail announced yet, but there will be prizes for the top three bands. Entrance fees, song limits, sign up details, and ticket info are yet to come, but get first word on these details at the official Facebook event page! Some notable local musicians are on the judging panel too, including Gsis Murphy drummer Tony Fabiano & Dustin Jones of Dustin Jones and The Rising Tide!

But why do I mention this on a metal blog? Cause I'm hoping some of you in metal bands might be interested in getting on the lineup for the Battle! Remember, Bring The Fallen, Dirty Virgin, Sue Inside, and Operation: Killdozer all took part in the YMCA-hosted battle in March, with all but one winning prizes! Hopefully there'll be some metal representation for this one too, the talent's there, you just gotta get involved! As soon as I hear more, I'll let you guys know! Stay tuned!

Next up, we have updates from Friday's Ace Frehley concert at Kewadin Casino! SooToday reader Marc Capancioni has submitted a review and photo album from the show to SooToday, and it's overall a positive article! Apparently, Ace had smoke spew from his guitar during one of his solos, just like back in the Kiss days! That would have been a treat to see live! Also, I'm surprised to see that Marc reported a "less than capacity crowd". You'd think with all the Kiss hysteria for their December show that Ace's concert would have sold out! Speaking of Ace Frehley, some videos from the concert have began popping up online! Two YouTube users, KissRocksForever and peacelovebonjovi, have uploaded videos from the show! Both took video from Ace's cover of the Kiss classic "Shout It Out Loud", while KissRocksForever also recorded clips of Ace playing two more Kiss songs, "Love Her All I Can", and "Shock Me"! Quality on all four videos is not great, but hey, I'm just happy people took video! Click on their names to check out their videos, but I'll show you guys one here, so here's peacelovebonjovi's clip of Ace playing "Shout It Out Loud"!



While we're on the subject of videos, there's a few more of a local band online! Sault Michigan's own Nixxon Dixxon recently played shows Halloween weekend at Kewadin Casino in St. Ignace, and YouTube user myangels1266 has uploaded three videos from their show October 31st online, including clips of the band covering Metallica's version of "Whiskey In The Jar", Van Halen's "Atomic Punk", and Alice In Chains' "Man In The Box"! Quality is definitely better than the Ace Frehley videos, though not perfect. Audio's decent though, and it's always great to see clips of Nixxon Dixxon online, as they have loads of talent! I'll show you guys a clip that myangels1266 uploaded, here's their version of "Man In The Box"!



And finally for today, two quick random updates. Sault Ontario natives Detroit have launched an official Facebook group! Nice to see them with a Facebook presence now, hopefully we'll get some cool band updates through there as well! Visit their Facebook group at this location, and remember to go see them on December 29th at Coch's Corner with Destroilet and Talk Shit! Also, I can now clarify that yes, Friday November 13th was the day that "Woods IV: The Green Album" was SHIPPED (Source here.) So the first copies should arrive Monday, I'd assume? We'll have to see, but no matter when it arrives, I can't wait! I'll share details on the album and what the bonus disc is when I get my copy! Review coming around December 1st!

Stillbroke - "Never Enough" Review!!!

It's time for another SMS CD review, and as promised, it's the only EP from Sault Ontario hard rockers Borderline Divine, back when they were known as Stillbroke! Entitled "Never Enough", it was independently released for sale in November 2009, and was available to purchase through 2010 at local merchants before going out of print. It was produced by Miguel Gauthier at Stereo Soul Studios and was mastered by Andy Krehm at Toronto's Silverbirch Productions, and it was Stillbroke's only studio release before their 2010-2011 hiatus, name change to Borderline Divine, and eventual breakup in 2012. The EP features the band's 2009-2010 lineup, including frontman/guitarist Jesse Frigault, guitarist (later drummer) Sam DeDominicis, and then-members Kyle McKey on bass and Jenny Hooper on drums. I can't confirm it's level of availability on torrent sites, but select songs are available to listen to on YouTube & the Stillbroke MySpace page, so search around to see if you can track it down! 5 songs are on this EP, let's begin with the first song! (Updated on September 29th, 2012)

The EP kicks off with the title track, "Never Enough", and it's easily my favourite song on the disc! Bass and drum intro leads into a very catchy song! Jesse Frigault's vocals are at their best on this song, using his full range effectively! I think what appeals this song the most to me is the high energy, while remaining heavy at the same time. My only real qualm is the solo, which could use more energy to fit the song, but that's minor. Might not be the best song to headbang to, but this is Stillbroke at their best, catchy hard rock that anyone can listen to! Definite highlight on the EP!

Next we have "No Reason" (the only song on this EP to survive in the Borderline Divine era), and if you've heard Stillbroke's old studio recorded song "Sick and Tired" from last year, this should be very familiar, as the songs are extremely similar. That's not a bad thing though, I liked "Sick and Tired", and "No Reason" is just as good! Slower than "Never Enough", but just as heavy, it takes a more subdued approach, particularly with the vocals. Another nice groove to this one, easy to get your toe tapping to it. I like the solo a lot more on this song, but I still prefer "Never Enough", which I find heavier and more energetic, though "No Reason" is still a quality track!

Following this, we get a ballad, entitled "Forget". Being the heavy metal fan that I am, you'd think I wouldn't as inclined to listen to slower songs, but that ain't true at all. This is a very well done song! I remember this worked extremely well acoustically at their Verdi Hall show earlier this year, but it's great plugged in too! I find that the songwriting shines on this song, you can feel real emotion in the singing as well! Definitely a good song, though I still prefer Stillbroke's heavier side, but of course, that's the metalhead in me talking. This is followed by "Wash Me Away", the only song on the EP that wasn't released before it came out, so I came into this with no preconceptions. Good song, but there's no real "punch" to it like the first couple songs had. It just kinda glides along, steadily being good, but no risks are taken. The guitar work is really good on this one, and Kyle McKey's bass is at top form here, but overall, I did like the first few tracks more. Still good though!

The final song is "Tear Me To Pieces", which is heavier than "Forget" but lighter than the other album's tracks. It's a very well performed song, though if you're expecting a heavy closer, this ain't it. I think this song has my favourite guitar solo as well! It seems very light, especially the intro. The verses are the best part to me, and it varies enough to succeed more than "Wash Me Away". I just wish it was a bit heavier, but in a sense, ending the album light like this just increases the anticipation for more, and that's good, cause I definitely wanna hear more from Stillbroke!

Overall, it's a solid debut from one of the more promising young bands in the Sault area! Stillbroke won't appeal to everyone, but speaking as a fan, I have to say that if you're into bands like Seether and radio rock bands like that, you'll really enjoy Stillbroke. Jesse Frigault's a great singer with a good range, and is very skilled at the guitar. The rest of the band are also very talented, Sam DeDominicis and Kyle McKey hold their own throughout, never playing badly, while Jen Hooper is dependable and very good behind the drumkit! If I have to criticize, I'd recommend taking some more risks and play more songs like the title track, which I've listened to repeatedly (but again, that's personal preference.) Great first release, and I can't wait to hear more from Stillbroke, and to see them live again! Buy this EP, there's a lot to like!

So there's this month's review! As I've previously mentioned on the SMS, next month's review will indeed be "Woods IV: The Green Album", and that will come on December 1st (saying that it arrives by then.) How about reviews in 2010 though? I have a tentative schedule worked up, but you'll just have to wait and see what's next. Possibly a new or upcoming album? Maybe a band from Sault Michigan? Ace Frehley Concert Preview!!!

It's time for another major concert preview! Seems like only yesterday that Papa Roach were at Kewadin Casino, and now, another big metal concert! So, here's what you guys need to know!

Original Kiss lead guitarist Ace Frehley is coming to Sault Michigan! The Spaceman himself will rock The Dreammakers Theater at Kewadin Casino tomorrow night! Now I know most of you will probably best know Ace for his career with Kiss, where he composed such notable songs as "Cold Gin", "Shock Me", and "Parasite", but he's also had an active career since! In his solo project, he's released songs like "New York Groove", "Into The Night", and "Rock Soldiers"! He released a brand new album, "Anomaly", in September, and should play a good segment of songs from that tomorrow night as well! Interesting timing for this show too, coming barely a month before Kiss (with Tommy Thayer donning the Spaceman costume) play at The Essar Center, it'll be interesting to see if Ace's show gets a high turnout as well! I wonder if those of you who demanded Kiss come here would be interested in Ace solo?

Concert details in a minute, but first, I've gotta show you something. I would have mentioned this yesterday, but it knew it had to go with the preview. On Tuesday, Bad Side guitarist Jason Mapes interviewed Ace Frehley for a segment on Classic Rock: The Bear (97.9 FM), and it's a very good piece! Jason definitely seems awed to talk to Ace, and he mentions his deep respect for him as a musical influence. They discuss Ace's current tour, his new album, what to expect at tomorrow's concert, his absence from touring in recent years, his influence on today's musicians, plus his opinions on Kiss' current state, and more! Jason posted this on Youtube, and it's a great listen. I was worried it'd mostly be talking about Kiss, but I was happily surprised! Check it out immediately below!



So here's the details for this concert: It will be at Kewadin Casino tomorrow night at 7:00 PM! There are no opening acts (Lita Ford was originally announced to open, but dropped off for a Queensryche tour.) Tickets are still available, for $28.50 (MUCH lower than the Kiss concert in December!) You can get them at 1-800-KEWADIN, at this location, and at the GraphixTwo box office on Great Northern Road! Should be a good show, hopefully nothing bad happens (it is on Friday the 13th, after all), and if I hear anything come out of it worth mentioning, you'll find it here! I like Ace's solo stuff, his voice isn't nearly as good as Paul Stanley's, but he gets the job done! I can't make this show, but hopefully you can! For a preview, here's a brand new song from Ace's new album, "Outer Space"!

Woods of Ypres/Stillbroke Album Updates, And The End Of Absolute?

Good afternoon everyone! Another short post today, but an important one! We have some important updates on a pair of recent new albums from local metal bands, and an update from a Sault Michigan-area band to cap things off. Here we go!

Woods of Ypres frontman David Gold has officially announced that "Woods IV: The Green Album" will be released FRIDAY! (Source at this location.) Nothing specific about when on Friday, like whether Friday is the first shipping day, the first day albums will show up in our mailboxes, or if they'll be in stores that day, but there it is, "The Green Album" comes out on Friday, November 13th! I'd reference the fact that it comes out on Friday the 13th, but that was likely unintentional. I personally can't wait, I love what I've heard so far and can't wait to drink in the full album! Same goes for the bonus disc, saying my pre-order came in soon enough, I'm highly anticipating that as well! When I get my copy, I'll be sure to let everyone know, and expect a review of the album around December 1st!

....Speaking of a review, the first official review of "Woods IV" has been posted online! Adam Wills from Hellbound.ca has reviewed the album, and it's overall a very positive critique! Much is made of the band's evolution from black metal to doom metal, and it only adds to the buildup for the CD! Wills gives it a 9.5 out of 10, and says it's one of his top albums of the year! Read the review for yourself at this location, it's well worth it! The only other "new" bit of news I can give for today is the rest of the song titles to appear on the album! Wills, through his review, has revealed the remaining songs, including "Dirty Window of Opportunity", "Don't Open The Wounds", "Natural Technologies", "Mirror Reflection", "The Long Life in the Limbo Union”, and “Move On! (The Woman Will Always Leave the Man)”! I'm not sure which one "Track 17" from Stereo Soul Studios' website is, cause the final album only has 16 songs, and that one hasn't been unveiled, but we'll soon find out!

Remember, I'm reviewing "The Green Album" and it's bonus disc hopefully around December 1st! And I'll replace the current Ace Frehley-themed SMS banner and logo with "Green Album" inspired images on Saturday, after Ace's concert! And get your pre-orders in while you still can, get all the pre-order details at this location!

While we're on the subject of local metal albums, here's an update on Stillbroke's recently released debut, "Never Enough"! The album can now be purchased in stores! Where, you ask? You can now pick one up at CD Plus in The Cambrian Mall, the Mac's at 12 Second Line West (on the corner of Peoples Road), and at TnT Pawnbrokers on Gore Street! Interesting locations for the CD to be sold at, but great to see it in stores! Remember, each copy costs $10! I'm still waiting for my review copy, sorry for the delay in posting a review, but it will definitely be this month! I highly recommend you guys pick up the album though, it will be well worth your money!

And finally for today, if their MySpace status update is an indication, a Sault Michigan-area band may be breaking up. Pickford hard rockers Absolute, in that status update, have revealed that they will be playing a show at "Dan's Place" in Rudyard on Friday. I believe this is someone's house and not a public concert like normal, so I won't call it as a real "concert", but here's what caught my eye specifically: The update begins with "Last chance to see Absolute live!!!", which basically suggests what it says. I'm hopeful they're not breaking up for good, but even if they do, we still have Riot! By Night to follow (remember, they share 3 members with Absolute.) Cross your fingers, hopefully this won't be the end of Absolute!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison), Plus A Couple Updates!

This is probably my shortest post in a while, but really, news does tend to slow up after Halloween every year. No matter, you can't let a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT slip by if you can help it! Plus, a tiny bit of updates as well, so let's get started!

Caveman Morrison's own Tym Morrison has scheduled another local concert for later this month! He'll be at The Big Cheese in Heyden one week from Friday, on November 20th! This show will take place at 10:00 that night. No listed cover charge, but just in case, buy something if you go. According to the Facebook event page, Tym will debut his brand new pedal that allows him to do three part vocal harmonies, which should be interesting! Sounds like a good weekend of shows if you're a Tym Morrison fan, as he'll also be at The Bottoms Up Lounge the night after! I'll update you guys if I hear anything else, but in the meantime, check out some of Tym's quality solo material at his official website, and his lengthy potential setlist at this location!

Now for a couple link changes on the SMS. First, I've removed the MySpace page for defunct local band Metallurgy. The page either expired or was deleted. Shame too, the page had some solid material, here's hoping Metallurgy members are still active in the scene! The other change is to local punk/metal band Destroilet, as they've officially launched their own MySpace page! Looks good, nice to see them expand beyond Facebook!
