Spades GT & The Northwest Updates, Plus More Recent News & Notes!!

I hope everyone's long weekend is off to a good start! On this Good Friday, we're playing catch-up with a very punk-leaning post, including the latest from a resurgent quintet, some assorted recent updates, and leading off, some big updates for a prominent band, so here's what you should know!

Here's the latest from local/Barrie punk/metal band Spades GT (née Jack Spades), who played their first concert since 2019 and since their relocation & name/lineup changes last night! As you may recall, Spades GT were among the support acts for a Dayglo Abortions/Random Killing show at The Queens Nightclub in Barrie last night, and based on personal Facebook postings, it looks like their set and the show proper were well received! It would have taken personal postings to learn that, however, as their Facebook page has vanished for unannounced reasons. If intentionally deleted, it could be to signify a fresh start, but the prior Jack Spades page was updated to reflect the new name and other changes, so who knows. This page for "Jack Spades GT" was launched last summer, but if it's official, it hasn't seen any updates aside from a non-specific profile picture. We'll let you know when/if a new Facebook page surfaces!

For now, Spades GT are linked on the SMS via their Bandcamp page. As for how Spades GT looked, photos shared from the event indicate that they are currently a four piece, belatedly confirming that guitarist Tiffany Stocco has left the band for a second time, presumably due to not moving to the GTA like J.D. & Daniel. Look for more music from her soon, hopefully! While she hasn't been replaced, there was one more lineup alteration, as Daniel Rodbard has replaced Steve Lorenz on bass with Spades GT for unannounced reasons. Hopefully nothing bad happened with Steve, but Daniel is an experienced Toronto-area bassist from acts like the Hip tribute The Tragically Hits and the thrash metal band Burning The Day, so it looks like he has the chops! No word on media from their debut, but members of Spades GT will be back in action in the GTA next month, so what should you know there?

Much like they did in the headliners' local dates, Spades GT will be among the openers for legendary metal trio Anvil's concert at The Rockpile in Toronto on May 28th, so if you'll be down south at the end of next month, keep this concert in mind, and click here for more details! Guitarist Daniel Horton has also indicated that he (at least) will be taking part in the Me First & The Gimme Gimmes tribute at The Queens Nightclub in Barrie on May 5th as part of a six band tribute concert, but it wasn't clear if Spades GT proper were the tribute or if this was a supergroup of area musicians.  It's great to see Spades GT are off & running at long last, and see above for more on J.D., the Daniels, and Tyler's 2022 activity!

Next up, here's the latest from local indie/punk quintet The Northwest, who received some surprise national TV exposure on Saturday night (well, early Sunday morning in this time zone) when their brand new song "Long Hair (Longer Nights)" was used as outro music during a third period commercial break of the Edmonton Oilers/Colorado Avalanche game on Hockey Night In Canada on CBC! Very cool, and while the band oddly did not plug the appearance before or afterward on their Facebook page, personal videos are floating around featuring the moment the song was played. When this occurred, the Oilers were leading 1-0, but the Avs won 2-1 in the shootout. Also on Saturday, Niagara Falls music website From The Strait interviewed Wayne Watkins & Mike Yakasovich from The Northwest for this article, so what do we learn?

The interview features the guys talking about the meaning of "Long Hair (Longer Nights)", how they formed, their musical inspirations, favourite current Canadian bands, and what to expect in the future. While mostly a light, CliffsNotesy dialogue with no direct references to the Soo, The Northwest do reveal that their third EP "All In" is scheduled for release on Friday, June 10th, and gigs are in the works! Very good to hear, and if the date holds, it just adds to a surprisingly busy stretch for local hard rock & punk album releases as of late! Our monthly review backlog means it's tentatively pencilled in for a July review, for the record. Check out much more from The Northwest above!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual for these short-form story blocks, these are in alphabetical order by artist or venue name:

  • In their first Facebook posting in almost three months, local alternative/genre-hating quartet Handsome Sandwich revealed on Wednesday that the rhythm guitar, bass, and drum recording sessions for their upcoming debut album "Lettuce" are complete! No word on vocals (or lead guitar?) yet, but it's good to see that the guys are staying busy behind the scenes, and we'll let you know when more updates surface!
  • The Midnight Echo concert in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday, April 30th has been moved from Soo Blaster to The Rockstar Bar, as per the latter venue's new Facebook event page. A reason for the venue change was not announced, but note that outside of the SooToday article on Soo Blaster's spring 2022 concert series, they never advertised The Midnight Echo as playing there on social media. Hopefully nothing bad happened, but kudos to The Rockstar Bar for stepping in to ensure the show goes on! No word on admission fees, we'll let you know if something is said.
  • Algoma University's campus nightclub/concert venue The Speakeasy re-opened last month after two years of pandemic inactivity with a newly renovated interior and a new regular open mic night series! As per their Facebook page, current operating hours are 6:00-11:00 PM on Wednesdays-Fridays, but one imagines that will expand with time, and could be flexible if outside events are booked there. It'd be great to see some concerts at The Speakeasy again when the time is right, but see above for what's going on there in 2022 so far!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site in the days ahead! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Nudge), A Cancellation, Plus Concert Updates & Videos!!

It's that time again, I have a bunch of new stuff to report today in the local metal universe! And we kick off today's post with LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!!

Marquette Michigan hard rockers Nudge are returning to The Satisfied Frog in Sault Michigan for nine more shows in 2010! I was worried at their lack of Sault shows this year when I previewed their most recent dates at The Frog, so it's great to see them coming back up here! According to their official MySpace page, they will be playing three weekend sets on April 15-17, August 26-28, and November 4-6! Each set stretches from the Thursday-Saturday of their given week, and as is the trend with Nudge's Sault area shows, the Thursday shows will be acoustic! No cover charges are listed, though if there is one, I doubt it'd be pricey. These should all be good shows, maybe I can finally check them out in August or November, because then, I'll be legal to enter an American bar, we'll have to see! Keep these shows in mind if you want a concert to hit across the river, and check Nudge out, they're a very solid band!

Next up, we have a concert cancellation, although if you look between the lines, the band likely aren't at fault. Hamilton's 40 Sons will not be playing at The Speakeasy on March 4th. Their MySpace page still lists the show, but with the addition that it is indeed cancelled. Instead, they'll be playing at Kilroy's in Thunder Bay that night, so at least they got a show anyway! Now a reason for the Sault cancellation isn't given, but if you remember from my initial alert on this show, I did say that The Speakeasy had not announced the show, and had been closed since February 4th, according to their Facebook group. Well, it's still closed, as best I can tell, so that probably explains why 40 Sons got canned. I remember that all planned events at The Speakeasy (mostly pubs) in February were called off too, so if my assumption is right, they likely won't be back open until March 5th at the earliest. I don't even know why they're closed, but hey, there must be a reason! I'll keep you posted if 40 Sons reschedule!

Also, I wanna bring this up because it's conflicting information on another upcoming concert: As you may have heard, Montreal death metal band Derelict are scheduled to be playing at Foggy Notions on May 6th. I later reported that North Bay's own Thekillingfield would be supporting Derelict at this show. Thhekillingfield have confirmed this, but is it still at Foggy's? If we're to believe their MySpace page, maybe not, as it lists The Oddfellows Hall as the host venue instead. The Oddfellows did play host to Thekillingfield at last year's Cattle Decapitation show, so there is a precedent there, but I'm not sure which venue is hosting this show. I'll still list Foggy's as the venue in the concert listings, but if I get more confirmation pointing towards a venue change, I'll let you all know! I will give a potential move to The Oddfellows this much, it'd likely be all ages then, something we don't see nearly enough nowadays!

Speaking of upcoming local concerts, here's some smaller updates from this Friday's Sense of Truth concert! I figure some of you may have questioned if it was really going on as there was no official band statements about it, or an event page, but both are covered now! In fact, there's TWO event pages on Facebook confirming their show Friday night at The Canadian Nightclub with new local band Groove Committee! One was created by Matt Sibilo from Groove Committee, the other was created by the band's group itself, so click here and here for to confirm your attendance for this concert! And if you wanted word from Sense of Truth itself about the show, Ryan from the band sent out an e-mail to members of their Facebook group confirming the show, so there you go! The only things we don't really know are the start time and the cover charge, if there is one, maybe we'll find out by Friday, I'll keep you posted if I hear something! And finally for Sense of Truth-related news, the band's winding down recording of their EP, with Cory Murchison recording vocals this week at Stereo Soul Studios. I can't wait to hear the final results!

And finally for today, here's a new video clip I came across the other day that should please fans of Woods of Ypres! Frontman David Gold has uploaded two new clips of the band from way back in June of 2003 onto YouTube! These come from the early days of the band when David was still behind the drumkit, Robin Cross still fronted the band, and they were still a rising black metal outfit from Windsor! The videos are live concert clips of Woods of Ypres playing three of the songs from their debut album "Against The Seasons" from a set at The Gino A. Marcus Center in Windsor, and appear to be from the same concert that was featured in the 2003 CBC News piece that featured them! Decent videos, nice look back into their early days, though the crowd seems small and reserved compared to what I'm used to. Also, random inquiry here, who's the dancing girl on stage with the band? Here's Woods of Ypres playing "The Sea of Immeasurable Loss", but check out two more live performances of this set at this location!

I'll leave it at that for today, I have stuff about Half Past to share too, but I'll keep that for tomorrow to help spread everything out! Tomorrow, I will preview this weekend's slate of local metal concerts, for what should be a very exciting weekend of shows! Thanks everyone, more news to come!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (40 Sons), Plus New Videos And Show Updates!!

So how about The Super Bowl? Oh wait, this isn't a sports blog, it's a metal blog! Lots of news and updates to get to today, ranging from videos to show updates to just plain interesting stuff! And we'll start with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!!

A little over six weeks after they last rocked Sault Ontario, Hamilton's own 40 Sons will be returning to the area for a concert on March 4th! This time, they won't be in Coch's Corner like they were in their last couple of local visits. Nope, when they hit the Sault next month, they'll be invading The Speakeasy at Algoma University! A start time of 8:00 PM is given on their MySpace page. Now The Speakeasy have yet to confirm this show, but bear in mind, they are having some issues that have resulted in the bar's closure since Wednesday, so patience will be a virtue! Once I find out details on ticket prices, age restrictions, any additional bands, and whatever all else, you'll find them here! Great to see 40 Sons back so soon, they're a solid band, check some of their stuff out at this location! I might hit this show, we'll have to see!

Now to a trio of announcements concerning upcoming concerts: One with a new band, one that needs bands, and one that needs a venue. We'll start with the show with a new band, and it's the concert on May 6th featuring Derelict at Foggy Notions! I can now confirm that there will be at least one opener, and it's North Bay experimental metal band Thekillingfield! You may recognize them as one of the opening acts for the April 12th, 2009 Cattle Decapitation concert at The Oddfellows Hall! This is shaping up to be one brutal show that death metal fans won't want to miss, I'll keep you posted on anything else I hear from this show! That includes possible additional bands, but I won't say anything that's not confirmed. You'll see if something new's added! Oh, and check Thekillingfield out on MySpace!

Now to the show that needs bands, and we'll start with a personal admission: I'm not as in tune with Sault Michigan as I'd like to be. I don't have a lot of the connections and sites that I have from the Sault Ontario side of things, so I miss stuff here and there across the river. So when I see something new in Sault Michigan being advertised, I don't hesitate to discuss it. That was the case today when I saw this on one of my breaks: Lake Superior State University are holding a Battle of the Bands next month! It will be March 20th at 6:00 PM, running until midnight! No rules or major details are listed on the poster, like exactly where the battle will be held, fan or band fees, rules, prizes, and so on, but contact info is given for this info! E-mail Jacob Winn at jwinn@lssu.edu or Tracy Merony at tmerony@lssu.edu if you are at all interested in attending or playing this battle! Judging from the LSSU stamp on the right, you have until March 12th to enter. Note that the poster doesn't say it's restricted to only bands with an LSSU student in the lineup, but keep it in the back of your head just in case. If I hear anything more on this battle, I'll be sure to share it, especially if metal bands make it on!

And finally for concert updates, here's something I haven't had in a while: A band looking to play here, but needing a venue! New Brunswick experimental hard rockers Cop Shades are looking for a Northern Ontario stop on their upcoming summer tour with bands to be announced. According to their MySpace page, they're hoping for it to be in Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie on August 8th before heading to Thunder Bay. Seeing as this is The Sault Metal Scene, I'll do my part to help get the word out for a Cop Shades show in the Soo! If you'd like to book or host Cop Shades on August 8th at a local venue, contact them at this location! Unique sound, no guitars and kinda experimental and sludgy, but heavy at the same time! We'll have to see where they'll be heading!

Finally for today, it's video time! A pair of local metal bands have released some new videos, and we'll start with Meatplow! Finally, we have real video of these guys in action, coming from the account of singer/drummer Phil Temporao (a.k.a. Phily S. Tempo from Amethyst!) These are older jam videos, not sure how representative they are of the band today, but if it's any indication, we're in for something special! The clips feature guitarist Dennis Porter and Phil on an electric drumkit (bassist Mike Thiffault isn't present...if the last name's wrong, my apologies!) The first clip is just a random jam of stuff off the top of their heads, and it actually sounds really good considering it's improvised! Phil doesn't have a bad singing voice either, the song has a cool industrial vibe! Maybe it's not James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, but it works! The other clip is their cover of Judas Priest's "Grinder", which I don't think suits their industrial vibe as much, but I really like Phil's vocal range, I'm surprised he could hit that falsetto! Both are good clips, check out the improv jam clip immediately below, or visit Phil's YouTube channel! (The song really kicks in after about 2:30)

Also, we have new video footage of Sykotyk Rampage from the Scotties Tournament of Hearts/Sault College Battle of the Bands! As it turns out, bands received the video footage of their sets afterwards, so guitarist Dirk Becker took the band's video, re-mastered it with effects, and created some unique live clips from the shows! Nice work! He's done two so far, "Called In Dead" and "Drinking on the Weekend", and says he'll make one for "Treating You Bad" soon as well! Nice work, always great to see pro-shot video of any local band! Check out their performance of "Called In Dead" from last Wednesday at The Heartstop Lounge immediately below! And of course, check out both the new clips (and some old) at Sykotyk Rampage's YouTube channel!

More news to come soon, including stuff on Sense of Truth and Woods of Ypres, and hopefully updates on Algoma Hope4Haiti, and much more! Stay tuned!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Half Past), Stillbroke Concert Review, And A Silver Dream Update!

Good afternoon, one and all! Surviving the cold alright? Hopefully some metal news will warm you up! I have a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT and some news from Silver Dream, but first, my review of last night's Stillbroke concert!

The storms of last night were a huge impediment for people to make it out for this concert, at the most, there was about 20 people. I have no doubt that The Speakeasy would have been more packed any other night! But as I always say, concerts do get more personal when attendance is low, so I got to hang out with Stillbroke and family for a good portion of the night, which was cool!

Around 10:15 PM, the show began with Band of Fury...just kidding, The Fury! And to be honest, this was the first time I've seen them live in over a year! They're unclassifiable by genre, but they played some pretty good songs! They opened with a cover of "Crank Dat" by Soulja Boy (Let's see another local band play that!), and later moved into originals. Compared to the last time I saw The Fury, they really seem like a tighter band, Paul Stanghetta has a solid singing voice, though I figured I'd hear more from Josh McNally vocally, seeing as he handles lead vocals in his other bands. Both are solid bassists too (Remember, there's no guitarist), and Joe Bumbacco was good all set on drums! The Fury won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you want some unique fast punchy music, they'll do the job!

Then Stillbroke hit the stage, and they sure loaded up their return, they had 32 songs on their setlist! Along with the five songs on their EP, they played a good selection of brand new songs, never before heard locally! Add to that old unreleased classics like "Stillbroke" (the song) and "Sick and Tired", and tons of great covers, and you have one hell of a set! The covers were of bands like Metallica, Seether, Neil Young, The White Stripes, Alice In Chains, Jimi Hendrix, and many more! The new songs that I heard were very good, Stillbroke's talent is easy to spot, and they have some faster heavier new songs and a couple slow ones! Jesse Frigault led the charge on lead vocals and guitar, and he was great, though his voice didn't sound as strong as it did at the Kiss Battle. Just an observation, he still sounded good! His solos were great too, no worries there!

Sam DeDominicis was a great steady presence on rhythm guitar, I'd like to see how he'd handle more guitar solos though, I bet he could pull off some pretty well! Kyle McKey was great on bass and backing vocals, he also has a good singing voice and it's put to good use on some songs! Jenny Hooper was impressive on drums too, don't overlook her either! The band were very tight, and despite the attendance (blame the weather!), they looked to have a lot of fun last night! Also, thanks to Jesse for dedidcating a song to me, that was awesome! Sadly, I couldn't stay the full night (I wish I could have!), but it was great seeing Stillbroke after such a long wait! Not counting the Kiss Battle, it'd been over 9 months since I've been to a full concert of theirs, and it was great (weather notwithstanding!) Hopefully they'll be back for another full local show sooner rather than later, they're a bunch of nice guys (and girl), and they're an awesome band! Buy their EP too!

Did I get photos? Obviously! Click here to check them out, or visit the SMS Facebook page to find them there! And I did get a video, one of Stillbroke's brand new songs in it's entirety! It's a quickie but a goodie, check it out below, here's "Push Me"!

And now, for the LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!! Local hard rockers Half Past are finally returning to the concert stage! After cancelling their Boxing Day show at The Rockstar Bar, they will be playing not one, but TWO shows at Foggy Notions NEXT WEEKEND! One on Friday February 5th, and another the night after! These will be Half Past's first shows since backing up Frightlight at Coch's Corner on Halloween! Neither show has a cover charge, they are listing a 10:30 PM start time. Confirm your attendance for either/both of these shows at the official Facebook event pages! Pencil me in for the Friday show (Saturday is UFC), I haven't seen Half Past since 2008 in the Fingerbone era, and they really are a great band, I can't wait! Hope to see you guys there too! If I hear anything more, I'll let you guys know!

And finally, another local band is looking for a new member, but there's some urgency in this case. It appears that Silver Dream have parted ways with drummer Matt Hicks, so they're looking for a replacement. However, the band have put a self-imposed deadline of Valentines Day (February 14th) to find a new local drummer. In the event that they have none by then, they plan on looking elsewhere in Ontario for a drummer. They want to head to Hamilton to get a record deal, and drummer or no drummer, they wanna do this soon. I'd love to see a local get on board with Silver Dream, so I'll do my part! If you or someone you know are interested in drumming for the new local hard rock band Silver Dream, message frontman Matthew Silver on Facebook A.S.A.P.!!!!

That's all for now, stay tuned for news as it happens! Next week will be packed, so look out for my review of Detroit's "Brace For Impact", my second installment of profiles of out of town bands with local members (Papa Fogals Chair and The Sexual Vigilantes to be exact), as well as reviews and videos from the upcoming Sykotyk Rampage and Half Past concerts! Stay tuned!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Riot! By Night) And Weekend Concert Previews!

Hey everyone, I figured I'd be back quickly with some new stuff to share, and I was right! For one thing, there's a few metal concerts this weekend to preview (I'm previewing them earlier than normal do because one show is Thursday), but also, I have LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS! So let's start with that!

Sault Michigan's own Riot! By Night have confirmed four more concert dates for across the river! Two are admittedly short notice, the band might only have posted them as late as Monday, but I can't verify that. Either way, my apologies!!! The two short notice shows are THIS WEEKEND at The Satisfied Frog, which they'll be playing at at 10:00 PM Friday and Saturday night! Then, Riot! By Night will hit Dondee Lanes on February 12th and 13th, which will be (I think) the band's first local concerts outside of The Frog! Those concerts will both begin at around 8:00 PM. Great to see Riot! By Night back playing more shows, I bet they rock very hard! Consider this a preview of this weekend's concerts too, I again apologize for the short notice of it, hopefully some of you guys will make it out to see Riot! By Night this weekend! I still have no audio or video to share, but click here to visit their MySpace page!

That's not all for local hard rock concerts this weekend, there's three more to get to! Take these two with a grain of salt though. According to Kewadin Casino's events calendar, Monkey's Uncle, the local band formerly known as Jager, will be playing at The Rapids Lounge on Friday and Saturday night! However, Monkey's Uncle don't list concerts of any type on their MySpace page, which hasn't listed a schedule since before they went on hiatus and changed their name & lineup. But, seeing as Kewadin are listing shows featuring them that weren't previously on their cancelled dates, and with the new name, they must have some truth to them. So with caution, I'll talk about them. There is NO COVER for both shows, and they'll start at 9:00 PM both nights! As you may know, Monkey's Uncle is the hard rock trio fronted by Henry Switzer from The Mama's Boys, alongside Jim Belleau on bass and Ron Suchey on drums. They used to be a frequent sight at The Rapids Lounge and elsewhere, hopefully they're back playing shows on a regular basis again! Great band, check out some originals at their MySpace page! For a preview, here's a clip from the Jager days of the band playing the Nazareth classic "Hair of the Dog"!

And finally, we'll head back to Sault Ontario for the metal concert happening TOMORROW! Local hard rockers Stillbroke will return to the local concert scene when they rock The Speakeasy at Algoma University tomorrow night! This will be Stillbroke's first local appearance since their performance at the Kiss Battle of the Bands last month, and their first full concert in Sault Ontario since APRIL! So if you've been missing Stillbroke, tomorrow's as good a time as ever to check them out! This will also be their first concert since the release of their first EP, "Never Enough", so expect to hear all the songs from it too (no word on if the EP will be on sale though.) Stillbroke will be supported by fellow locals The Fury (not "Band of Fury" as some online pages say), who will deliver their own unique brand of bass and drums rock music once again! You may recognize bassist Josh McNally from Out Of The Mouth Of Babes and drummer Joe Bumbacco from DOTH, so they have metal cred, but expect something completely different!

Doors open at 9:00 PM tomorrow night with a 10:00 PM start time! There is a $3 cover at the door, it's 19+ EXCEPT for Algoma students with their student IDs, so if you're 18 or younger and want to attend, you're out of luck unless you go to Algoma University. This should be a great concert, I guarantee I'll be there for it, and hopefully some of you guys will be there too! Stillbroke are a great young band, their EP is a solid first effort, and it will be great to see them play more than two songs live after such a long wait! Click on the links above to check out both bands, confirm your attendance at the official Facebook event page, and for a video preview, here's a clip of Stillbroke from the Kiss Battle last month!

That's all I have for today, but stay tuned for lots more, especially on Monday for my review of "Brace For Impact" by Detroit! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Derelict), Weekend Concert Previews, And More!

First of all, a reminder to check out the details on the Hope4Haiti benefit concert event in the post below. In short, many local concert venues will host many local bands on February 20th to raise money for the Canadian Red Cross towards helping Haiti in the aftermath of their devastating earthquake. Foggy Notions were the first to confirm their involvement that I know, they were looking for interested bands on their Facebook page. Tickets will be $10, for more information or to get your band/venue involved, e-mail slackhopper@gmail.com! But read my post or click here to get more details, let's help make this a success!

Today, we have a bunch of stuff to get to, including previews for all four metal shows this weekend in Sault Ontario and a new page for a band I recently mentioned. But first, we have a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!

Montreal death metal band Derelict are coming to Sault Ste. Marie! They will be at Foggy Notions for the first stop of their Northern Shores Tour on May 6th! What better way to spend a Thursday night than with some good old Canadian death metal? A start time of 8:00 PM is given on their MySpace page, though I'd think it'd be later than that. No word on cover charges or any possible additional bands, I'll let you know if I find out! Very brutal band, but in a good way, death metal fans will want to mark this on their calendars! If I'm in town, I'll be there! Check out some of their songs on MySpace, or click here to visit their official website! I will keep you posted with updates on this concert as I hear them!

And now, it's time to preview this weekend's concerts! We have four different metal shows this weekend, two tomorrow night, two Saturday night, all at different venues in Sault Ontario! Let's begin at The Rockstar Bar, when a notable local band returns, if a week later than we'd have hoped. Social Play, the hard rock band formerly known as Browbeat, will finally return to the concert stage a week after their planned dates last weekend were cancelled. A start time of 7:10 is given on Facebook, but I doubt it's that early (maybe I'm wrong?) No cover charge is listed, and it's not all ages. As I said in my preview of the cancelled shows last week, this will be the first concert for this band since their 2008 appearance at the Rock 2 Roll skatepark fundraiser at The Canadian Nightclub! They used to be a frequent sight locally, having backed up Econoline Crush during one of their shows here, and playing local bars throughout the mid 2000s! Drummer Chris Smith told me that they'll play some older Browbeat songs and new material, which should be great to hear! For full details on this concert, visit the Facebook event page! I don't have video to share, but this will be a good show, you have my word!

Meanwhile, at The Speakeasy, Guns N' Roses tribute act Gunz N' FN' Rosez will come to welcome the Sault to the jungle! Doors open at 9:00 PM tomorrow night, with the concert starting at 10:00 PM! Tickets are $10 in advance unless you're an Algoma University student, then you only pay $8. Both ticket prices jump $2 if you pay at the door. You must be 19 or have Algoma student ID to get in to this concert. Tribute bands are always fun to see, and these guys do a pretty good job of covering GNR hits, even donning the looks of the classic lineup (save for Izzy Stradlin, Buckethead's in his place!) Check out more from Gunz N' FN' Rosez at their official website! For full details on the concert itself, click here to see the Facebook event page! Solid tribute band, not perfect, but they're well worth seeing if you get a chance! For a preview, here's a clip of their rendition of "Paradise City"!

And then there's two metal concerts on Saturday night! One will take place at The Bottom's Up Lounge, where Tym Morrison will return for another acoustic solo set! Expect to hear many of Caveman Morrison's covers and more in an intimate setting! Chances are we all could use more softer stuff here and there, and Tym's got the metal cred and covers, so why not go see him on Saturday? He'll be on at around 10:00 PM, there is no cover, and I assume it's 19+ too, as it is a bar. So there's an idea for you guys on Saturday night, it should be another fun set! For full details on this concert, visit the official Facebook event page! Check out songs and video from Tym and Caveman Morrison at his official website, which was recently updated!

And finally this weekend, a hard rock band from Hamilton are returning to Coch's Corner! 40 Sons will be there Saturday night, just 3 months after they last played there! I was still unsure about this concert's validity, given the band's failure to post it, but it is still in Sault This Week, and J.D. from Coch's Corner was plugging it on Facebook, so it's on! I don't think there's a cover charge, I'd expect a start time of 10:00 or 11:00 PM on Saturday. Remember, 40 Sons are a pretty successful band, notably having won last year's Bodog Battle Championship, and getting airplay on various Ontario radio stations! Solid band, I like the singing, helps set them apart from other bands with a similar style! Check them out on MySpace to hear even more from 40 Sons! Another concert well worth considering, it is definitely on, hopefully there's a good turnout! For a preview, check out this live clip of 40 Sons performing their song "The Weight of the World" from a show this past June!

And finally, thanks to an anonymous comment on my post Tuesday, I can tell you even more about the local band SBD! I told you that their frontman is No Arrow's Dann Pichette, but the band also includes former No Arrow bassist Brad Griffith, and Shane Triplett on drums! Their first names seem to make up the band's name (Shane, Brad, Dann), just in case you didn't catch that! A link was given for the band's Soundclick page, which probably eluded me in the past because Sault Ste. Marie isn't mentioned on it at all. There, you can find a band photo and four songs! One is "Rock Paper Scissors" from the videos Dann uploaded to YouTube, but there's three others! On second listen, they are pretty different from No Arrow, more experimental, though there is still a bit of a grunge feel. It's hard rocking enough for the SMS, so click here to check out more from SBD! I wonder if we'll see them or No Arrow on stage soon?

Let's leave it there for today, I'll have more news soon! I hope to be at the Social Play concert tomorrow night, not sure about Saturday's concerts though. Stay tuned for more news and updates!

FIVE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Gunz N' FN' Rosez, Stillbroke, Monkey's Uncle, And Pop Evil)

Hey guys, it's time for not one, not two, but FIVE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!! Some are slightly short notice (my apologies), but all will be good concerts! Here's what you need to know!

We'll go in order by when the show takes place, and the first is in ONE WEEK! Toronto's own Gunz N' FN' Rosez, who plug themselves as "North America's Ultimate Guns n' Roses Tribute Show", are coming to Sault Ontario! They will be at The Speakeasy at Algoma University on January 22nd for a night full of great renditions of Guns N' Roses classics! Tickets are now on sale for $8 if at The Speakeasy if you're an Algoma student, and $10 if you are not. The price jumps $2 for both ticket categories if you buy at the door. The doors open at 9:00 PM, show starts at 10:00, you must have your Algoma student card or proper 19+ ID to get in. For full details on this concert, visit the official Facebook event page! Oddly for a Guns N' Roses tribute band, they're portraying the classic lineup with Buckethead in place of Izzy Stradlin! Remains to be seen if I can make it out for this, but Gunz N' FN' Roses aren't bad at what they do, sounds enough like Axl and company to please GNR fans! Check out more from Gunz N' FN' Rosez at their official website and their official MySpace page!

Then, just six days later, The Speakeasy brings you another concert, which will be headlined by Stillbroke! Yes, the local hard rockers are back for their first full local concert in over 8 months on January 28rd! This will also be their first full concert since the release of their debut EP, "Never Enough", so expect to hear the songs from their very solid first album! Joining Stillbroke are fellow locals The Fury (featuring Out Of The Mouth Of Babes frontman Josh McNally on bass, and former DOTH drummer Joe Bumbacco), who'll deliver their very unique brand of music to the masses once again! This will be a 10:00 PM concert at The Speakeasy, with The Fury opening. No word on admission prices or age restrictions, if there are any, I'll keep you posted! There is no event page yet, but the concert is official, and was announced on a Stillbroke fan page, so there's my source. Great to see Stillbroke back, I'll hopefully be able to make this concert! Stay tuned for more updates as they come in!

Now we head to Sault Michigan, as a local band appear to be back on the local concert scene! Remember Jager, the hard rock band fronted by Mama's Boys singer/guitarist Henry Switzer? Well, they took a long hiatus in 2009, cancelling their tour dates, changing their lineup, and changing their name to Bad Monkey, and then to their current name, Monkey's Uncle! Well, even if their MySpace page hasn't listed new shows, it appears that they are back playing concerts! Kewadin Casino's concert calendar lists that Monkey's Uncle will be playing at The Rapids Lounge at Kewadin Casino on January 29th and January 30th! Both shows have no cover charge and are at 9:00 PM-ish! Great to see Monkey's Uncle back, I've always been a fan, too bad I'm not drinking age to get in yet! Click on the links above to check out their original material and some live videos! Hope both concerts go well!

And finally, I heard about this show on Rock 101 this morning. Muskegon hard rockers Pop Evil are returning to The Dreammakers Theater at Kewadin Casino! You may remember them last summer when they supported Saving Abel, and then, I honestly didn't see Pop Evil as "metal", so I didn't mention it much. Well, looking back on it, Pop Evil have a lot of hard rock songs (most notably "100 in a 55"), and they were heavy enough to support bands like Judas Priest on tour, so yeah, they're SMS-worthy! They will be joined by Toronto hard rockers Evans Blue, best known for their song "Cold (But I'm Still Here)"! Also on the lineup are two local bands, but I'm not sure which ones they are, Rock 101 didn't give names this morning, and I'm not seeing mention of them anywhere. I know Peril are playing at The Rapids Lounge that night too, but they're not local. If I find more, I'll keep you guys posted!

Click on the above links to check out each band! But here's the best part about this show that sets it apart from typical Kewadin Casino fare: It's a benefit show, though I didn't get a chance to write down the details of what the proceeds are towards, I'll update with more info once I hear it. Tickets are very affordable too, just $15! You almost never see shows this inexpensive at The Dreammakers Theater, and it's for a good cause too! They're on sale RIGHT NOW, so buy them at this location! As I hear more about this concert, you'll be sure to find info here on the SMS!

That has to be the most new local concerts I've had in one post in months! That's all I have for tonight, other news will be soon, so stay tuned!

EDIT: Social Play have cancelled their concert tonight at Foggy's, no word why. I'd seen someone asking if it was still on on the event page, and what they heard was correct. I'm bummed, I miss seeing Browbeat/Social Play live, but hopefully they'll be back! I assume the Saturday concert is cancelled too, but there's been no official word either way. I'll keep you posted!

Tym Morrison Concert Preview & Garden of Bedlam Boxing Day Updates!

EDIT (Monday, 7:28 PM): Bring The Fallen have backed out of Tuesday's concert at The Speakeasy. Reason unknown as of 7:28 PM Monday. Thanks to Nolan Rainville for the information! This has also been announced on the Facebook event page. If you were planning to go, no worries, The Inner City Surfers and The Scary Uncles are STILL PLAYING ON TUESDAY! Not metal, but it'll still be a fun concert!

Hey guys, as you may have noticed from my Facebook statuses (Add me on there if you want), I haven't been on much this weekend. The internet here in Detroit is really lacking, freezes randomly and cuts out when it wants. So I haven't updated much since getting here. Things WILL get back to normal this evening, when I make it back home and can get caught up on all the news and updates I've missed. And if there's an update, concert, news item, or announcement that I should know, e-mail me at robfigures@hotmail.com!

So for today, just a quick post to preview the local metal concert coming up in tonight, and give more details on an upcoming show too! So here is local concert previews!

Firstly, Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison is back for another solo concert tomorrow night at The Bottoms' Up Lounge! If you missed him Friday at Station Mall or The Big Cheese, no worries, you have another chance to check out Tym's acoustic solo set! If you've seen a typical Caveman Morrison concert, this is quite similar, but in a stripped down acoustic setting, with lots of great heavy metal covers, as well as other songs too! Tym will take the stage at 10:00 PM tomorrow night, confirm your attendance at the official Facebook event page! Expect a great show from Tym, if you wanna mellow out with a beer and some rocking tunes, why not go? For a preview, check out some of his solo material at his official website!

And finally, Garden of Bedlam have officially confirmed their show on Boxing Day (this Saturday) at Foggy Notions! It wasn't really a secret before anyway, but good to hear official word! And the band have indeed launched an event page on Facebook for it, so all the details are there! Doors open for this concert at 9:00 PM, the band begins at around 11:00 PM! There will be a cover charge of $5 or less, so keep that in mind. And yes, it is 19+ (Foggy Notions is a bar, remember?) This could be one of the band's last shows before they hit the studio to record their first full length album, so why not go, drink in the new Foggy Notions, and rock out! I know I will, if I can escape family holiday stuff for a few hours! Remember, click here for full details, I'll keep you all posted if I hear anything more!

That's all for now, I PROMISE THINGS WILL START GETTING BACK TO NORMAL BY TONIGHT! Can't fight with this slow computer any longer, I'll be home soon, and at Foggy's on Saturday, with (hopefully) a new camera in tow! Stay tuned, thanks everyone!

THREE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, Three Days Grace Show Updates, And More!

How's everyone enjoying this snow? I was happy, I got the day off class, so I got to researching news for an SMS update, and I have plenty of stuff to share tonight! And we'll start with not one, not two, but THREE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!!

Remember last Tuesday, when local death/thrash metal band Bring The Fallen won the Battle of the Bands at The Speakeasy? Well, as you're likely aware, the winner of that battle would (among other prizes) get the opportunity to open for The Inner City Surfers (featuring Lion Ride's Mikey Hawdon on drums) at their concert December 22nd. Well, I can finally confirm this show is a go, and Bring The Fallen are definitely playing support! They're calling this a Christmas bash, and with the timing of the show, that's appropriate! Also scheduled for the concert: local punk rockers The Scary Uncles, who always impress in their live performances! This concert starts at 10:00 PM that night, cover charges or age limits have yet to be announced. Sounds like a fun concert, and Bring The Fallen will help bring the metal edge that's welcome at any show! Get full details at the official Facebook event page!

Speaking of The Inner City Surfers, members of the band will regroup in a new act playing on December 18th at The Rockstar Bar! That night, a concert called "Rock of Ages" is being held, where three bands will play songs from different eras of music. Local group The Money Shots will play a set of music from the 1950s, while local classic rock band The Suspects will play a set of 1960s/70s music. But what caught my eye was a band by the name of Skid Crue, who will play a set of 1980s hair metal songs! I had to ask about them, and Martin Fiser from The Rockstar Bar told me that three members of The Surfers are in Skid Crue! I don't know if this is a one off thing or a brand new band or what, but it sounds good! Very diverse musical lineup too, you won't see such a wide cross-section like this very often! Tickets for "Rock of Ages" are $5 in advance from either CD Plus or The Algonquin Hotel, or $ 7 at the door! If I hear more about this concert or Skid Crue, I'll let you guys know!

And finally for new concerts, we FINALLY have a local metal concert of sorts in Sault Michigan for the month of December! I've been surprised by the lack of concerts and announcements of new ones lately for across the river, but we have one now! Young local hard rock band Free Refill are back on the live scene, and they'll be playing at a talent show at Sault Area High School! No time is given on their MySpace page, but my money's on it being an after school deal. Sure, it's not a publically open concert, but they're a local metal band playing live, and I'm sure there's readers who go to Sault High, so there's a heads-up! Talented young band, they should have a bright future! Check out more from the band at this location! Also, according to their MySpace page, it looks like guitarist Tyler Wall has left the band. That sucks, but hey, he's still in 7/47, who are promising in their own right!

So there's your three new concerts, and they're now located in the concert listings on the left and right of the page! Now, it's time to update everyone on the fallout from Tuesday's entertaining Three Days Grace concert! Donna Hopper from SooToday has posted her review of the concert at this location! According to the article, the crowd only numbered at around 2,000 people. I wonder why, maybe it was the weather? Ticket prices? Quality of the openers? (Oh come on, I liked Seether more!) She also noted the overall quietness of the crowd and lack of activity for the first two bands, and looking back on it, I noticed that too! What they should have done is grabbed everyone from the stands and moved them to the floor if they wanted, that'd have helped (hey, it worked for Jackyl.) She also noted that Three Days Grace (save for Adam Gontier) later showed up at LopLops Lounge for the official after-party, and mingled with fans and signed autographs and such! EDIT, 8:25 AM: Donna's photo album from the show is finally up, check out her pictures by clicking here!

SooNews correspondent (and friend) Lucas Punkari posted a review and photo album of his own at this location! Nice photos, miles better than mine (remember, I'm not a professional.) Among other local news sources, The Sault Star didn't have a review or recap, though Michael Purvis did post an album with 100 concert photos (again, great quality) which you can check out by clicking here! Nothing from Sault This Week though. And I guess I should mention this, cause I've heard nothing else about it since, but I saw someone get really hurt at the show. They had to clear a big area in the crowd to get a girl out, she was clutching her face and when her hands moved, I saw blood on her hands. I have no clue what happened, it was very packed on the floor, but damn, that sucks! Word of warning, concert fans, be careful, you don't know what could happen! Take care of each other and keep things safe!

And finally, VIDEOS, lots of them! Only two people I know of have uploaded videos so far, but there's lots to go around! One is from YouTube user SLIPKASS05, of the band performing the song "Riot", which you can check out at this location! Not bad quality, and it's the only clip I've seen so far from the floor. The rest all come from barbiegirl8833, who you may recognize for her uploads of videos from the Staind and Papa Roach concerts at Kewadin Casino! She got 13 clips from the show, which (I think) accounts for every song they played except maybe "I Don't Care" and "Just Like You". Quality's alright, she had a good angle of the band from the seats! Check out all of her Three Days Grace videos, plus six from Default's set and one of The Used, at this location! I'll show you guys one here, so take a look at the band playing their hit song "Home"! (Note: Fast forward to 4:55 in the clip. Trust me.)

And of course, if I hear or see anything more coming out of the Three Days Grace concert, I'll let you guys know! Now, here's basically my attempt to catch up on a local metal talent that I barely ever mention on here, but really, he deserves it. Are you familiar with Sault Michigan native Mikey Bishop? Well, he's a noted metal drummer, and he's made a name in numerous bands, some local, some not! The most notable local group he was in was Lower S.E.S., and he's since joined numerous bands behind the kit, almost too many to mention! Probably the most notable is Grand Rapids death metal band Sadomasochism, who did a lot of touring in the 2000s and backed up bands like Superjoint Ritual at some big concerts! Now, Mikey's the drummer for Lansing black metal band Summon, who recently released a new album! I've heard some of Mikey's bands, and I'm impressed! He's an awesome drummer, and it's great to see him succeed as much as he has! Definitely overdue for me to talk about him on here! Check out more from Mikey, including tons of live videos from his bands, and new Summon tracks, at his official MySpace page! He should bring Summon up here for a show!

And finally for tonight, just a quick notification that Rock 101 have officially confirmed that Garden of Bedlam are backing up Kiss on Tuesday! They've updated their front page and concert listings to reflect their opening status! That's all for tonight, next post will likely have a preview of this weekend's Caveman Morrison concerts, along with another LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, and anything else that should pique your local metal interest! Thanks everyone!

Kiss Battle: Night Two Review! Plus, Algoma Battle Review, Kiss Finals Preview, & LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!

(Note: If you're wondering why Three Days Grace have invaded the SMS banner and the logo on Facebook, it's cause we've entered the week of the 3DG show at The Essar Center! Hope to see some of you guys there!) Well everyone, another night has passed, and five more bands have made it to tonight's finals of the Kiss Battle of the Bands at The Canadian Nightclub! Time to review and recap everything that went down last night, so if you weren't there, here's what you missed! Stay tuned afterwards for a preview of the finals, a recap of the results from the Algoma Battle, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, and Kiss ticket info! Last night, Rock 101 had more banners up, including one on stage, gave it more of an official feel, which is cool. Another packed crowd, though as a whole, they were livelier and more into the bands as a whole! Most bands had fans way up front, which is a very good sign! Just like Monday night, loads of fans and band members said hi and talked to me and such, I again couldn't name you all, but I appreciate it! Also, I met Mark SanAngelo from Rock 101 last night, he told me he's been reading the SMS, thanked me for all the promo, and even said that he sent a link to Kiss' management to check out the battle's progress! That is just awesome, thanks Mark! One thing I noticed is that the six metal bands on the bill played within the first seven performances, so us metalheads got a huge dose of it last night!  Early on were Sense of Truth, who also kicked ass! They sounded just as good as ever, not really that different from the last time I saw them, but that's certainly not a bad comment! Cory Murchison's vocals were in top form, especially now that he just sings, he can do so much more as a singer without a guitar to worry about too! Steve Myers and Ron Baxter were solid on guitar, hell, the whole band were solid! Great stuff, especially if you like Tool & Deftones kind of music! The fans gave them a warm response too, and I half-expected that, what with all the people wearing Sense of Truth shirts! I'd have picked a heavier song instead of "Vicious Cycle" to open with, but it's a good song, and it worked! Can't wait to see these guys in a full concert again, it's been too long! The third band were, to me, one of the wild cards, as I've neither heard their originals, or ever heard of them playing in Canada. In any case, Sault Michigan's own Nixxon Dixxon came, saw, and rocked last night! These guys aren't just a cover band, they're the real deal! Don't be fooled by the underage Xs on their hands, they sound extremely good and were among the night's best! Singer Brandon Carr has a confidence and stage presence that works well, and Chris Hubbard was nailing some great solos! The quality of their originals was actually pretty good, I wasn't sure what to expect, but they're good songwriters too! These guys are seriously a band to watch out for, and with them playing so often across the river, there's plenty of chances to check them out! Also, I loved the EVH 5150 III amp, that's an awesome piece of equipment! The fourth band were Bring The Fallen, who has just came back from the Battle of the Bands at The Speakeasy (How'd they do? I'll tell you after I finish with Kiss battle stuff.) Without any shadow of a doubt, they were the heaviest competing band, and they were also the only group to get a mosh pit going! I try not to headbang at shows unless other people are, to avoid tangling my hair, but my head was sure banging for these guys! Tight and fast as hell, they were nailing everything! Josh Stephney sounded brutal (in a good way) on vocals, and the rest of the band were just amazing! Death metal may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love it, and I would definitely send Bring The Fallen to the finals. However, that's in the judges hands...hopefully they liked death metal too! Next were the only non-metal band in the first seven performances, local punk/country outfit The Billy Bastards (or The Billys for short!) Now, I'm the first guy to admit I'm not a country fan, but this is different, way closer to Hank III than Garth Brooks (Hopefully you get that reference!) Definitely different, and well played for what it is, I'm amazed at the cheers and support they had! Very cool to see! The punk quality of their music adds to make them sound not that bad, I would not be opposed to seeing them again! The sixth band on the bill were the one with the most pre-battle hype, Lion Ride! And they pulled out all the stops last night, they had a merchandise table set up, they put their own banner over top of the Rock 101 banner, they even broke out their fog machine from their normal concerts! Add all that to their loyal fans, and you can tell they REALLY want this! Luckily, their songs delivered! Their typical on-stage energy was on full display, Mikey Hawdon sounded as good as ever on vocals, and the whole band seemed to relish this oppurtunity, so they made the most of it! Marco Pedalino was nailing the solos, Mike Indovina was solid on drums, not one flaw with their performance! Their game plan so far was working, I just wish they played "Slapdance"! Oh well, maybe tomorrow, if they made it! (I'll tell you if they did in a second) The seventh band of the evening were also the final metal band, Stillbroke! It's been months since I last saw them, and I'm happy to report they haven't lost a step! I wasn't expecting them to play their self-titled song left off their EP, but it's a good song, and it gives bassist Kyle McKey a chance to sing too, which is cool! Frontman Jesse Frigault was a confident steady presence up front, and his solos and singing were both of a high quality! I also was amused by the Stillbroke fans up front waving glowsticks in support, that was fun! Also great to hear "Never Enough" live, always liked that song! Great set, they definitely have the talent, we'll have to see if the judges agreed enough to send them to the finals! And thanks to Bill Frigault for the Stillbroke t-shirt! The night closed with three bands I wouldn't classify as "metal", though they all had obvious talent, so all was good! Eight were Wishbone, who were really good, moreso than I was expecting! The songs were a touch heavy, a quality I always enjoy, and the band as a whole were very good on their instruments! Dennis Duguay was a solid frontman, and Brent Royer is a great replacement for Glen Thomas behind the kit! Nice to see them back at The Canadian after the "ban" following that Grady show, it'll be nice to see them advance if they do! And I gotta say, I loved Jeremy Salatuk's guitar, I've always liked Dean Razorbacks, so props to him! Ninth were local favourites Gsis Murphy, who had a good set as well! Admittedly not everyone's cup of tea, and not as heavy as some of the other bands, but I liked what I heard! They had lots of adoring fans, and the band even got some of the crowd to help sing along with "21st Century Loser"! They weren't bad at all, nothing too different, but nothing horrible either! The night closed with local classic rock band Middle of Nowhere (pictured) who were also quite good! Internet pages had me expecting they'd be more "pop rock", but they had a good classic flavour that worked nicely! Sergio Palumbo has a good voice, and the band played some rocking tunes with a good enthusiasm! They'll be worth checking out again, I'd say! After a bit of a wait for the judges to pick their choices, Mark SanAngelo announced the five bands advancing to tonight's finals! And they are:
Gsis Murphy Lion Ride Nixxon Dixxon Sense of Truth Wishbone
Again, this will be up for debate in terms of who should advance and who shouldn't, and I'm happy with the choices! I'd have liked to see Bring The Fallen advance, but I can understand them being too "extreme" for the judges. Stillbroke surprised me, I thought they might move on! Overall, last night was a much tougher call for me than Monday, it was very close! Overall, I have to say that mostly due to the increase in metal bands, I enjoyed Tuesday more than Monday, but both nights were loaded with great bands and great music, and things will only get better and more important tonight! Now it comes to TONIGHT, the finals of the Kiss Battle of the Bands! I won't preview each band in detail again, that's overkill and I won't have much new to add, but check my last couple posts for all you need to know about the finalists! For reference, here are your 10 finalists!
Blues Harvest Flat Stanley Garden of Bedlam Gsis Murphy Lion Ride Nebraska Arms Nixxon Dixxon Sense of Truth Stiffler's Mom Wishbone
VERY tough call, all 10 bands are deserving and have the talent, but who do you think will win? Let me know on the comment board or on our Facebook page! Remember, it all starts at 9:00 PM tonight at The Canadian Nightclub, it's 19+ and the cover charge is $4! I took lots of pictures, 100 more to be exact, so check them out on our Facebook page or at this location! Of course, expect a much better quality photo album from Donna Hopper on SooToday at this location, great work as usual! Check out her recap and photo album from Monday at this location as well! Hope to see you guys at The Canadian tonight for the finals, this will be one hell of a show! If you didn't make it to Monday or Tuesday, THIS IS YOUR NIGHT! Now, let's discuss the OTHER battle that took place last night! I wasn't there, so I can't give details on how it specifically went. Last night at the Battle of the Bands at The Speakeasy, Bring The Fallen won it all, taking home $300 and the right to open for The Inner City Surfers at The Speakeasy on December 22nd! (Still need an official announcement on that show, when I hear it, I'll let you guys know!) That marked Bring The Fallen's second straight battle win after the March YMCA Battle, though they sadly won't make it three in a row after being eliminated from the Kiss Battle last night. Still, props to them on all their success, and for playing two battles in one night! The Fury (featuring Out Of The Mouth Of Babes frontman Josh McNally and ex-DOTH drummer Joe Bumbacco) placed second, winning $200, while Toronto's RedD Monkey won $100 for placing third! Creedon & The Animal Detectives finished fourth, while The Scary Uncles were forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. This battle raised $500 for The United Way, which is awesome! Sounds like a fun time, it's just a shame it had to go the same day as the Kiss battle! And now, for that LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!! Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison has scheduled another upcoming solo concert, which will take place on December 21st at The Bottoms Up Lounge! Cover charge is nil, the show starts at 10:00 PM that night, and he's hyping that he might play some Christmas songs this time around! Should be a good show, it's worth seeing if you wanna hear some great covers in a more intimate atmosphere! All acoustic, but very well played, and he'll take requests too! He knows hundreds of songs, and he'll know something you'll like too, guaranteed! Confirm your attendance at the official Facebook event page! And finally, I'm mentioning this now because I don't know how long they'll be available, but The Essar Center have quietly began selling some more Kiss tickets! As of 9:47 last night, some were being released in clumps of one or two at a time, some being prime floor seats! Head to The Essar Center's website to see if you can snag some while they're still available...well, IF they are! Thanks to David Helwig at SooToday for alerting us to this, article at this location! That's all for now, I PROMISE THAT THE WOODS IV REVIEW IS COMING LATER TODAY! YOU HAVE MY WORD! This Kiss battle stuff + university have sapped my time to listen to it and give it a proper review, but I think I can get in today! Also, expect my review of the Kiss battle finals tomorrow! Then, things won't be quiet for long, I'll have a review of Garden of Bedlam's concert on Saturday and the Three Days Grace concert on Tuesday coming up as well! Stay tuned!
