LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tripp 'N' Dixie, The Lows, And Tarnished) & Weekend Concert Previews!!

It's now time to dive into another batch of weekend concert previews, but on the hard rock front, this is a very quiet weekend, with only two heavier acts to speak of playing live in the area (at least, with advance notice.) To round things out, we have some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, two for the summer and a pair for later this month, so here's what you should know!

Sault Michigan hard rock band Tarnished will play their first Kewadin Casino gig of 2020 when they rock The Signatures Lounge in the Soo TONIGHT in acoustic format, but they also have new shows in the works for later this month! While not yet advertised on the band's own online pages, the Banned successors will reportedly return to The Double D Bar & Grill at Dondee Lanes on Friday, January 31st and Saturday, February 1st, as per the venue's Facebook event page. These will be Tarnished's first Dondee gigs in two months, and their first full-band electric concerts of 2020, so don't miss out on their hard rocking covers then! Expect 7:00 PM start times, 21+ age limits, and no cover there, and see above for more details. In the meantime, Tarnished will be at The Signatures Lounge tonight for a Thursday unplugged matinee (no word on if Alex will be playing solo or with Josh/Nathan), so if you like our acoustic hard rock a little Tarnished, you know where to go!

This is a 6:00 PM event with no cover charge and a likely 21+ age limit. For what it's worth, frontman Alex Traynor did in fact play an afternoon matinee at Biggby Coffee this past Thursday (his birthday), as per the coffee shop's Facebook page, though it was announced on short notice, Tarnished haven't advertised a Biggby show since December 12th, and no one has publically confirmed that Alex/Tarnished is still playing there "every Thursday". If you want to see if he'll be there, visit between 12:00 & 2:00 PM, and my apologies for missing last week's gig! Now, for a preview, here's Tarnished live!

Next up, here are a pair of new Kewadin Casino concerts for later this year, marking the last of our Rapids Lounge hard rock show announcements from their entertainment page, which is updated for lounge gigs through early July. As you may know by now, the Sault Ste. Marie branch is trying a new "Rapids Sessions" series in 2020, with touring bands (as in, not cover acts from Northern Michigan) playing there on select weekends, like BRKN Love last week. Most of the currently scheduled bands are not hard rock or metal, but two such acts will split the June 13th weekend at The Rapids Lounge, starting with Pontiac classic/southern hard rock sextet Tripp 'N' Dixie on Friday, June 13th! Very old school-inspired sound from this band, who would have been right at home in the 1970s, and they have enough harder edged material to go around while also delivering some down-home soul at the same time, so don't bypass Tripp 'N' Dixie!

Unlike other "Rapids Sessions" concerts this year, Tripp 'N' Dixie are not playing on that Saturday, as the June 14th spotlight will instead fall on Detroit hard rock quintet The Lows, making their own local concert debut here. This group brings a more modern, alternative-influenced sound to the stage, and with distinctive vocals, a solid groove, and strong musicianship, The Lows should attract a good audience of their own on this Saturday nighter! It'll be interesting to hear how these and other Rapids Sessions concerts go, so visit the above links to learn more on the acts from abroad playing at the Soo Kewadin this year! Both Tripp 'N' Dixie and The Lows are on at 10:00 PM each night, with no cover charge advertised, and 21+ age limits are to be expected. Finally, we'll wrap things up for today by finishing off this quiet weekend of hard rock concert previews, as prolific Sault Ontario hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will continue his ongoing weekly concert arrangement at Gliss Restaurant with acoustic matinee shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! As usual, Tym will deliver another entertaining weekend of classic and hard rock covers to patrons and fans alike at the Spring Street restaurant over these two evenings, so if you're up for some supper-time acoustic action on the Canadian side of the border, you know where to go this weekend! Like any other week for Tym's long-term run at Gliss, expect both of these shows to have no age limit or cover charge (but mind the locale), and each gig will start at 6:00 PM. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tarnished), Mike Haggith's New Song, And Much More!!

With a special Wednesday night concert on the docket, it's only fair to preview it today, with that band's other shows this weekend and related LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS attached, but we also have a new song upload and some more recent updates to fill things out. Here's what you should know!

Sault Michigan hard rock band Tarnished have a busy stretch ahead, with four shows in four days, most prominently including their debuts at The Double D Bar & Grill at Dondee Lanes TONIGHT, FRIDAY, and SATURDAY NIGHT! Yes, they are playing a rare Wednesday show here tonight, and no, they are not rocking the local bowling alley's on-site nightclub tomorrow for unannounced reasons. It's not immediately clear whether these will have the full now-quartet lineup or if these will all feature Alex (and company?) unplugged, but Tarnished should have three great nights of hard rocking covers in store, no matter what form they're taking here! These are all 7:00 PM shows with 21+ age limits and no announced cover charge. If you want to see Tarnished TOMORROW, then head to Biggby Coffee for the latest stop in their "every Thursday" run there, and while we're on the subject, let's add their likely matinee gigs on December 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th shows there to our calendar!

Approach the December dates with caution, especially if they/the coffee-shop have a holiday break, but "every Thursday" means what it means until otherwise stated. All of these dates, tomorrow included, have 12:00 PM matinee start times, no age limits, and no cover. The 2 minute video is well shot and framed well for the vertical camera angle, and Alex and Nathan sound good together, so give it a look below, and look for much more from Tarnished in the Soo tonight in the coming days!



Next up, let's head north to Sault Ontario (well, technically Thompson, Manitoba), where local alternative/hard rock solo musician Mike Haggith unveiled the final studio copy of his new original song "The Best You Never Had" on his YouTube channel on November 1st! Apologies for the delay, this fell between the cracks for far too long. Planned to be the opening track on his upcoming studio album "If Ever Comes The Day", I will hold full comment pending our review of the whole CD, but the song will please long-time fans of his, especially if you've been craving some more upbeat, plugged-in material. Give it a listen below, and keep watch for more updates from Mike's camp!



Finally for today, here's three shorter assorted news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or venue name:

• I have removed local death/trance metal solo project Black Cloud from our active band links due to the quiet deletion of all of their social media and online pages, sadly also including their "Abstract Sounds" album on Bandcamp. There was room for improvement, but Black Cloud had promise and a unique musical approach that would have been especially effective at the peak of Blood Shed Productions' live run, and hopefully Peytan resurfaces in a new project when the time is right!
• Popular downtown nightclub Reggie's Place apparently closed permanently on September 15th, as per Facebook advertising for Maxx Entertainment-affiliated concerts there that weekend. A reason for the closure has not been announced online that I know of, but Reggie's had only re-opened less than 4 months prior after lengthy renovations following the August 2017 fire above the venue. We only covered a handful of Mourning Wood & Soundcheck shows there due to it's country cover focus, but Reggie's was a long-standing and fan favourite bar for decades, and best of luck to Reggie and company at the still-open Reggie's West! 
• I have also removed defunct local alt-metal duo Troubled Mind from our inactive band links due to the quiet deletion of their Facebook (and only online) page at some point in the past year. Spiritual successors to Skull After Betrayl, this project was only sporadically active in 2015, posting one video and hyping some irreverent original content in the process. They had talent, and hopefully Mike & Adam stay active musically!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tarnished) & Most Of This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

It's high time to cover some more weekend concert previews on the SMS! Just a heads up, due to the amount of shows, we will be holding our previews of Saturday night's Ripcordz and Just Leppard shows for tomorrow's post, so keep watch for those then. Now, here's what you should know for this weekend, starting with LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, one on SHORT NOTICE!

Joining the likely continuation of their "every Thursday" series at Biggby Coffee TODAY and beyond, Sault Michigan hard rock band Tarnished will make their debut at The Double D Bar & Grill at Dondee Lanes for three shows in four nights on November 27th, 29th, and 30th! Apologies for the short notice on TODAY'S Biggby matinee, I was waiting to see if anything would come out to confirm or deny the series' continuation (as best as I can tell, it is still on, no one has said otherwise.) As such, also look for Alex and Josh to bring their acoustic attack on November 14th, 21st, and 28th (one imagines) for more unplugged hard rock covers for tips and coffee, as well as TODAY! As for the Dondee gigs at month's end, this won't be new territory for frontman Alex Traynor, who brought his prior group Banned there in February for one of their final local concert bookings, thogh it's not yet clear if these will have the full electric band setup with drums or not.

And yes, the Dondee shows are on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, with no Thursday nighter scheduled there. No word on why they're booked like this, but hopefully the special mid-week show gets a decent turnout as well! All three of those gigs are early 7:00 PM affairs with likely 21+ age limits and no cover, while TODAY'S and the rest of this month's likely Biggby Coffee gigs are at 12:00 PM with no cover charges or age limits. Next up, we'll move to previously announced concerts, starting with a brief detour to Sault Ontario, where local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will keep his busy schedule up with unplugged solo concerts TODAY at Thomson Farms Cider & Winery and then TOMORROW & SATURDAY at Gliss Restaurant! Today's matinee at the west end mill's Wine Barn will be his penultimate Thursday show there of his seasonal run here, and first show in the series in two weeks, after Thomson Farms closed last Thursday due to it being Halloween proper. Apologies for missing that, we didn't hear about the show being off until after the fact. Meanwhile, Tym's long-term arrangement at Gliss will continue unabated for fans and patrons at the Spring Street restaurant, so keep tomorrow and Saturday evening's shows in mind as well!

As usual, the Gliss and Thomson Farms shows are all ages events with no cover charges and early start times of 5:00 PM at the mill & 6:00 PM at Gliss, though mind the locales, these aren't traditional nightclubs. Now, let's head back to Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula, as Traverse City classic metal trio Peril will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! The last advertised gigs in our area for 2019 from this veteran band (though Scarkazm will be heading north in the coming months), this will be another prime opportunity to see Jeff, Adam, and Brooks break out their hard rocking cover selection in Mackinac County, so why not go see them one last(?) time this year! As usual for Peril's trips north to our local Kewadin branches, tomorrow and Saturday's shows are 21+ affairs with no announced cover charges, and 9:00 PM start times. Finally for today's previews, let's return to Sault Ontario, specifically The New American Pub, where Hamilton comedy/folk punk musician B.A. Johnston will return to town as support for Montreal power pop band Dany Laj & The Looks in a union of recent live favourites on the local stage! This will be B.A.'s second live appearance of the year at The New A, and third total in the Soo dating back to 2015, and with his polarizingly amusing blend of creative solo folk punk, his show will have to be seen to believed! Trust me, this isn't someone I can sum up in a couple of sentences! While not a punk or metal band, many readers will be familiar with Dany Laj & The Looks from their four local concert stops in the mid-2010s, where they garnered a solid following their melodic power pop originals, and hopefully theyr get more of the same in a rare non-LopLops appearance here! This concert is promoted by Girl Friday Productions, who booked B.A.'s New A show here in April, so we should be in good hands for the encore.

Tickets for this 19+ concert run for $12 at the venue and at this link, while an early-ish 8:00 PM start time is advertised. This should be a fun and diverse night of music from two touring favourites, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's B.A. live in Sault Ste. Marie!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Banned & The Wyld Stallyns) And Weekend Concert Previews!!

After a couple days of just feature posts while I attended to some personal concerns, we're back with regular news today to end the month, courtesy of (most of) this weekend's hard rock concert previews! Due the amount of shows this weekend, I am holding our preview of Saturday night's Joni Radford memorial concert for tomorrow's post where it will get proper emphasis, so look for that then! Now, here's what you should know to start March 2019 off, including some SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!

Local acoustic hard rock trio The Wyld Stallyns will return to Room 21 for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via the band's Facebook page on Monday. After a couple weeks off (Rob & Christina's "Me & The Missus" show at Johnny's Chophouse aside), this will be The Wyld Stallyns' first show at the bar above Low & Slow since early January. It's worth noting that the band's Facebook event page credits TOMORROW's show as their "usual monthly gig" there, but given that they didn't play a publically advertised Room 21 show at all in February, that strikes me as a generalization given their frequent shows there. The Wyld Stallyns' brand of unplugged, fan-involvement-friendly, and often heavy covers should go over well TOMORROW, so don't miss out then! Next up, we'll take a brief detour to Sault Michigan, where Kinross classic/hard rock trio Banned are apparently returning for shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Double D Bar & Grill at Dondee Lanes! Again, apologies for the short notice, these shows were quietly advertised on frontman Alex Traynor's website, but they haven't been acknowledged on Banned's Facebook page at press time. For what it's worth, the promotional push for Alex's debut solo EP has been his primary focus as of late, so that may explain the Dondee gigs falling under the social media radar. Surprisingly, these will be Banned's first concerts at the local bowling alley since playing at the then-Sportsman's Lounge last March, so if you've missed Banned at a non-Kewadin venue in the Soo, you may want to circle TOMORROW & SATURDAY'S shows on your calendar!

You can take in their hard rocking covers at an earlier 8:00 PM start time both nights, with 21+ age limits and no cover charges expected. Assuming these are definitely on as advertised, Banned should put on a solid show TOMORROW & SATURDAY, so see above for details, and here's Banned live!



Moving to previously announced concerts, let's briefly head back to Sault Ontario, where local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison has three more acoustic shows this weekend to kick off another busy month! You can see Tym continue his long-term arrangement at Gliss Restaurant on Spring Street TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT with two more acoustic matinees, while the shows bookend a traditional nighttime concert at The Roadhouse Bar & Grill on Trunk Road TOMORROW NIGHT as well. Whether you're at one or more of these concerts, Tym Morrison's unplugged hard rock and classic hits should garner a solid reception once again, so keep his downtown matinees and his east end Friday nighter in mind! As usual, the Gliss shows are st 6:00 PM with no stated age limit, the Roadhouse gig is at 10:00 PM with a 19+ age limit, and none have a cover charge. Finally for today, let's go back to the Eastern Upper Peninsula, as Sault Michigan hard rock quartet 415E are scheduled to rock The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Note that 415E have not directly plugged these shows on their Facebook page at press time, but they are listed on Kewadin's entertainment page, and are the only 2019 gigs at any Kewadin branch currently adverised for the former Hubbard-Menard Band. After returning from their lengthy hiatus and lineup retooling last month, this will be 415E's second concert weekend in this new era, and their first in St. Ignace since their last pre-hiatus concert weekend in July 2017, so if you didn't see Dave, Chris, Brett, and Jason last month, here's your next chances! LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Killer Dwarfs), Saturday Night Concert Previews, And More!!

As promised, we're rounding out this weekend's publically announced hard rock and punk concert previews today with a pair of one nighters tomorrow, but to round things out, we have some assorted news and updates, and leading off, here's a big LOCAL CONCERT ALERT in four months time!

Juno nominated Oshawa glam metal quartet The Killer Dwarfs will return to Sault Ste, Marie for the first time in decades when they headline at Soo Blaster on Saturday, April 27th! A staple of the Pepsi Power Hour and Canadian rock radio at their peak, fans may recognize The Killer Dwarfs from hit songs like "Keep The Spirit Alive", "Doesn't Matter", and "Dirty Weapons", but they haven't rested on their laurels, and they have a new album in the works. With a lot of familiar and hard hitting '80s metal to offer, The Killer Dwarfs should attract a solid turnout this spring, so if you love hair metal, you may want to circle April 27th on your 2019 calendars! At least one opening band is to be announced, stay tuned for confirmation. This show is brought to you in part by Sault Online columnist Ernest Skinner, who interviewed frontman Russ Graham in his Rock Talk column in August, and it'll be very interesting to see if he has more in the works, especially if The Killer Dwarfs go over well!

Tickets for this 8:00 PM and presumably 19+ concert are $24.50, but admission + a meet & greet with the band goes for $40, and a VIP table with meet & greet runs for $500. You can buy tickets at this link, and physical tickets are expected to be available in the new year. With this show and Aaron Pritchett now announced for 2019, it's clear that Soo Blaster are aiming high to have more big-ticket names on their stage (rap aside), and there should be plenty of Hair Scare listeners and 1980s metal aficionados to make this a packed show! Next up, let's wrap up this weekend's hard rock/punk concert previews, starting with local indie/punk quintet Northwest's long-awaited EP release concert TOMORROW NIGHT at LopLops Lounge! Four years after putting out their self-titled digital EP, the guys are topping that with a full release party for their sophomore effort "Songs From 2015-2017", and if you know their talent and professionalism, you know that this will deliver the goods! We still don't know much on the release formats, availability, complete track list, or price for the EP, but we'll of course let you know when things go public. Local indie rock quartet K.I.C.K. will end a year+ hiatus as the opening act tomorrow, and it's great to see this talented quartet back for the holidays, so don't be late for the Keep It Cool Kids' return either! The second in a three night run of LopLops concerts from Tidal Records, there is a higher-than-usual $10 cover charge in effect, and while EP prices aren't public, I'd bring at least $5...

...or come early, as the first 50 people in the door will get a free download card for the EP! This is a 19+ concert, a 9:00 PM start time is advertised, and you can buy tickets at this link or at the door. Unfortunately, I have a very early morning on Sunday, so I don't think I can get down there for this concert, but hopefully the EP has a semblance of online availability next week, as my plan is to review "Songs From 2015-2017" this month. Lastly in our pre-Christmas previews, we'll head to Sault Michigan, where local classic/hard rock cover band Highway 63 will end their year+ hiatus from the concert stage when they headline Dondee Lanes' Christmas party TOMORROW NIGHT! We haven't seen Highway 63 on stage since November 2017 for varying personal and health reasons, plus a major retooling of the band's lineup and setlist, with the band's Facebook event page confirming their new expanded lineup. Now a quintet, frontman Henry Switzer, his son/guitarist Nathan, and the already confirmed Justin Lawless (on drums) will be joined by two new members named Brian and George. Last names weren't given, and while I have a partial hunch on identities, I will wait for public confirmation before posting anything here. How will Henry and company look and sound in their big return? You can find out tomorrow at the Dondee's in-house nightclub, which changed it's name from The Sportsman's Lounge to The Double D Bar & Grill earlier this year.

To go along with the live music action, the Double D is offering happy hour drink prices from 12:00-6:00 PM tomorrow, plus a free pizza and wing buffet at 4:00 PM, with Highway 63's set proper taking place at 8:00 PM. This is presumably a 21+ event, and there's no advertised cover charge. Fans of Highway 63's crowd-friendly classic and hard rock covers should be eager to see them back after a lengthy break, and with the frills of a Christmas party to boot at Sault Michigan's own bowling alley, why not come down to enjoy the action? • Reunited hard rock cover quartet 415E's return gigs at The Rapids Lounge at the Soo's Kewadin Casino have been postponed a week from January 4th & 5th to the 11th & 12th. The venue's entertainment page confirms the changes, with new local cover trio Road House (featuring 3/4ths of the now defunct Cousin Eddie) playing there on the 4th & 5th instead. Keep the new dates in mind for next month, and stay tuned for more on 415E's new lineup and 2019 plans, and if Road House skew heavier in sound!
• Three more installments of the aforementioned Ernest Skinner's SaultOnline column Rock Talk have been posted in the last few weeks, including interviews with Brighton Rock guitarist (and Sault Ontario native) Greg Fraser, Kingdom Come guitarist Danny Stag, and a retrospective on Circus Magazine. Great reads as usual, and it's nice to see Greg doing well for himself since moving, so give these a look above, and stay tuned for much more!
• Local acoustic hard rock trio The Wyld Stallyns featured guest drummer (and Rob & Jesse's Elements bandmate) Jonas Gasperas again at their set from last week's Music Night at The New American Pub for the Ontario Special Olympics, as per new photos from the concert on promoters Girl Friday Productions' Facebook page. Looks like a lot of fun was had for a great cause, and I'm sure Jonas fit in well as usual that night!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Highway 63) & Our Theatre Of Night Concert Previews!!

As promise, our extended preview of this weekend's remaining Sault Michigan metal concerts makes up the bulk of this morning's post, including a new video of that band in action, but we are leading off with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next weekend for you Yooper readers to check out! Here's what you should know!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63 will end their year+ concert hiatus at the previously teased Dondee Lanes concert on Saturday, December 22nd! The band termed this event as a "back on the road party", but the venue is calling this their Christmas party, and it will take place inside the bowling alley's nightclub, which was renamed from the Sportman's Lounge to the Double D Bar & Grill this fall, complete with it's own Facebook page. I don't know whether or not there were renovations in conjunction with the renaming, but the new moniker works well enough, and it has more allusions to the Dondee name than before! The Christmas party proper will be an all day event with drink specials and a pizza/wing buffet, but Highway 63's return set will cap off the night, in what will be their first public show since late 2017, and their first since drummer Justin Lawless & their yet-unrevealed new bassist replaced Ron Suchey & Chris Leask.

This should be a fine way for Highway 63 to resume their local run, with their new lineup and setlist in tow, so keep all of the action in mind for next Saturday! The party begins at 12:00 PM (with Highway 63 playing at 8:00 PM), this is presumably a 21+ event, and there is no announced cover charge. Next up, here's our last concert previews for this weekend, as local classical metal project Theatre of Night will make the local stops of their second Christmas tour this weekend, including a return to the Pickford United Methodist Church TONIGHT and their debut at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Soo's Kewadin Casino branch TOMORROW NIGHT! Earlier teasers of a Sunday date in Sault Ste. Marie have not had a public follow-through. Just under a year removed from their dates in Pickford & at The Soo Theater, this talented ensemble will return almost intact from 2017, with only singer Stacie McCarthy absent from the first tour. Fans across Michigan have been enjoying Theatre of Night's metal-infused take on Christmas standards for over a month now, and it'll be great to have Craig, Steve, Rachel, Scott, and Erik back home for the holidays! Tonight's Pickford show (at 115 East Church Street) will have a later 7:00 PM start time compared to last year, and is absolutely ALL AGES.

Like last year, there is no admission fee, but a free will offering will be taken at the church. As for tomorrow's Kewadin gig (a rare show of this scale there from a local headliner), this special concert will be held in The Dreammaker's Theater's table seating configuration, and to go along with that, food, drinks, and a cash bar will be on hand for willing patrons. Some proceeds for this show will go towards local Salvation Army operations, and the Sault Lions Club is helping put this on, so some worthy causes are involved this weekend! Tickets are still available at this link, at the in-person box office, or at 1-800-KEWADIN for $15 at a table or $25 in the theatre seating. Similarly, a 7:00 PM start time is advertised, and this is definitely ALL AGES as well. This should be a great weekend of metallized Christmas standards from a very talented quintet of local and Western Michigan notables, you'll be entertained at either venue over the coming days! Note that the tour ends in Holland next Sunday.

This concert took place at the Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids, so this is arguably more of a preview of tonight's Pickford church show than anything. The video was taken on a stationary camera behind what appears to be all of the seats, so the distance isn't optimal, but you do get a good sense of the church's grandeur and design! The live-stream unfortunately includes 20 minutes of set-up, but from then on, you'll get the band's full 2018 stage show for 75 or so minutes, so if you can't come out this weekend, this is a must watch! Carols performed include (in order) "What Child Is This?", "Carol of the Bells", "The Little Drummer Boy", "Away In A Manger", "The Nutcracker Suite", "Silent Night", "O Come All Ye Faithful"...

... "O Holy Night", "Hark The Herald Angels Sing", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "We Three Kings", plus some instrumental/aria spots, and all as bookended with pre-recorded narration about the birth of Jesus and the nativity, keeping with the setlist's rough concept. Theatre of Night sound great here, and Rachel's vocals are beautiful, so fans of Christmas carols done heavy will enjoy how this turned out! If only the camera was zoomed in more, and if only more people came out! LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Banned And Rob Speers & Jesse Cook), And Weekend Concert Previews!!

It's time for our St. Patrick's Day weekend concert previews! I know many of you are awaiting coverage of both Shit Liver's new album and A Dire Setback's recent debut CD-related announcements, but with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS to touch on, I've gotta hold them until our next news post. Don't worry, they are coming! On the hard rock side of the spectrum, there's not a decent amount of shows to partake in with green beer in hand, so here's what you should know for this weekend! (Updated at 6:01 PM)

Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock trio Banned will return to The Sportsman's Lounge at Dondee Lanes for concerts TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced the shows via it's Facebook event page last night, with the venue's Facebook page previously doing the same yesterday morning. These will be Banned's first shows at the Dondee in over three months, and their first anywhere since rocking Hessel last month, so if you're overdue for another night or two of Alex, Don, and Wayne's hard rocking favourites, you know where to be TONIGHT and/or TOMORROW! Note that a comment on their Facebook page heavily implies that they'll be performing at the first annual Michihistrigan Rendezvous event in Gould City over the Father's Day weekend in June, but remember that the Lower Peninsula is outside of our coverage range.

As usual for Banned's stops at The Dondee, TONIGHT & TOMORROW's shows are 8:00 PM affairs with 21+ age limits and no announced cover charge, and make sure to bring your green clothes and Irish spirit for presumed holiday festivities! Next up, Elements bandmates and Jack Spades alumni Rob Speers and Jesse Cook will bring their acoustic hard rock show to The Rockstar Bar in Sault Ontario as part of their St. Patrick's Day festivities TOMORROW NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, Rob did plug it at the end of Jack Spades' set at the Archelon show this past Saturday, but it was only announced online via it's official Facebook event page yesterday. Three weeks removed from their last show of this nature, this will be Rob & Jesse's first Rockstar Bar stop in a month, but this time, the luck of the Irish will be upon TOMORROW'S concert, given the holiday trappings! As such, expect green beer (of course), some form of prize giveaways, and even lreprechauns themselves? Of course, in terms of the music, expect more unplugged cover favourites from Rob & Jesse, plus guest performers, and the venue did hype up that you can "bring your guitar and join in the fun!"

Moving to previously announced concerts, fans can also check out prolific local hard rock solo artist Tym Morrison as he returns to Gliss Steak & Seafood for two more matinee headlining gigs TONIGHT & TOMORROW! Keeping up with his busy schedule of shows there, and fresh off of his minimally advertised Mark's Breafast Plus shows earlier this week (including one yesterday, apologies for missing it here), Tym's latest stops at The Quality Inn's house restaurant should provide more of the same acoustic hard rock classic action, so don't miss out on these next two supper-time gigs! Note that the Sault Music Newsletter Facebook page advertises Tym as playing at The Roadhouse Bar & Grill tonight, but neither he nor the venue have otherwise confirmed that. If either does, we'll edit this post!  As usual for Tym's Gliss stops, expect 6:00 PM start times, and no announced cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale. This post originally ended with a preview of a New American Pub show THIS SUNDAY NIGHT to have been headlined by Louisiana punk trio Layden & The Lion, but it as confirmed this evening that they had to cancel their tour for unspecified "personal reasons". Our source is co-promoter/performer Jackson Reed via a share of the now-updated Facebook event page. Hopefully all's well in Layden and company's camp, it would have been nice to see them in town! Unusually, their exit means that the entire original lineup has dropped out of this show, as planned openers Telephone & Address and Greg Callaghan has previously dropped out for unannounced reasons too, leaving their spots to be filled by Treble Charger guitarist Bill Priddle, folk/pop artist Shae Tull, and the aforementioned Jackson Reed (who is also Telephone & Address' new drummer.) The show will go on though on Sunday night, and while it no longer contains no punk acts, consider a trip to The New A at 8:00 PM for the indie and folk rock on display! The $5 cover charge and 19+ age limit remain intact from earlier incarnations of this show.

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Banned), Tym Morrison Concert Previews, And More Updates!!

On this snowy Thursday, here's our weekend concert previews, as slight as they are this time around, but things will pick up as we approach the Christmas season! Today, we have some assorted recent news and notes, big updates regarding an upcoming holiday show, but we'll start with previews, including SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock trio Banned will return to The Sportsman's Lounge at Dondee Lanes for shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice,  this show was only announced via it's official Facebook event pages (linked here & here) on Monday and yesterday. Over two weeks removed from their last Dondee show just prior to Thanksgiving, TOMORROW & SATURDAY'S shows will bring Banned back to the local bowling alley for a more typical scheduled weekend of shows, and with lots of hard rocking and more general covers in their repertoire, they should provide a good time once again this weekend! As of right now, these are Banned's last publically scheduled gigs of 2017, but I'd be surprised if we don't see them again before the year's out. TOMORROW & SATURDAY'S concerts have early 8:00 PM start times, 21+ age limits, and no announced cover charges. See above for more details, and here's Banned live!

Next up, here's this weekend's only other announced hard rock concerts in our area, as Sault Ontario acoustic hard rock solo artist Tym Morrison will continue his long-term run at Gliss Steak & Seafood with matinee concerts TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY! As Tym enters the holiday season, his ongoing arrangement with The Quality Inn's house restaurant continues to provide hard rocking songs in an unplugged setting for fans and patrons alike, and this weekend's shows should be no different, so consider an early evening of familiar rocking hits over these next three days! As usual for Tym's lengthy run of Gliss gigs, expect 6:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and no age limits this weekend, but again, these is a formal sit-down restaurant, not a typical nightclub. Also today, here's the latest from Sault Michigan classical metal project Theatre of Night's now-commenced Christmas tour, specifically the tour's local stop at The Soo Theatre on December 16th (one week from Saturday!) First, an opening band has been confirmed for it, which they credit on their Facebook page as "The Soo Theatre Cello Group." As best as I can tell, they mean The Soo Cello Crew, a chamber-style youth group formed via a class at the theatre (source here), and they should fit the with the classical influenced headliners! As per it's official poster, this show will also feature a meet & greet session with the band post-concert, and some proceeds will now benefit the recovery fund following the venue's fire that took place back in October. Ticket prices have also raised from initial announcements, with adults now being $15, students $10, and Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS) members getting in for $5. Interestingly, singer Rachel Mender is listed alongside Craig & Steve as band members on the poster, so is she the only one of their recent live additions to become a permanent studio member too? We'll keep you posted!

Things sound like they're shaping up nicely for Theatre of Night's local stops (including in Pickford next Sunday), and hopefully this tour is a big success so that we see Theatre of Night live again in some form, Christmas season ties or not! Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• According to personal Facebook postings last month, Eclipse guitarist Daniel Horton filled in for his old Haggith bandmate James White on bass during Handsome Sandwich's set at the Dany Laj & The Looks concert at The Rockstar Bar in Sault Ontario on November 18th. No word on where James was, but hopefully nothing too serious happened, and that Daniel fit in well with his Jack Spades predecessors at last month's show!
• Munising, Michigan metal quartet Infathom (featuring former Sault area resident Dillion Semasky) have surprisingly been named as openers for the Theory of a Deadman concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Soo's Kewadin Casino on December 30th! The band broke the news on their Facebook page on Monday, and will be playing their first public set in the E.U.P. since rocking Pickles in Brimley last March. Huge opportunity for Infathom, so don't miss them at month's end if you have your tickets, because this show is advertised as being SOLD OUT!
• 3 Day Millionaires drummer Scott McLurg filled in with fellow local classic/hard rock quartet Soundcheck for their show at The Esquire Club on Friday, November 17th, as per the band's Facebook page! No word on where Steven Flint was, but he wasn't advertised as missing the follow-up show on the 18th. This notably meant that Scott and ex-Millionaires bandmate Travis Sharpe were reunited for this concert, and hopefully he fit in nicely with Soundcheck last month!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Id Iota & Banned), A New Album Discovery, And More!!

I apologize for things being slow around here this month, November doesn't usually crash this hard for news after Halloween! That said, we have a full news post for your pre-Thanksgiving enjoyment, and it includes some assorted updates, extra info on our most recent CD review topic, and leading off, here's a pair of LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, one on SHORT NOTICE!

Kinross classic/hard rock trio Banned will play a special Wednesday night concert TONIGHT at the Dondee Lanes in Sault Michigan! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via it's Facebook event page on Sunday. Alex, Don, and Wayne will be making very rare appearances at the local bowling alley's Sportsman's Lounge TONIGHT, with us last covering a Dondee stop from them in December 2015, so regulars and local fans will be overdue to take in this talented group at the South Mackinac Trail location! No word on why they're playing mid-week at the Dondee, but it could be related to holiday plans and/or venue closures over the forthcoming U.S. Thanksgiving weekend. If you're up for some pre-turkey hard and classic rock favourites, you know where to be TONIGHT! An early 8:00 PM start time is in effect for this 21+ show, which has no announced cover charge. Next up, here's a Sault Ontario show with lots of advance notice, as local alternative/hard rock quartet Id Iota will return to the stage on Tuesday, December 26th (a.k.a. Boxing Day) when they open for local/Montreal pop rock solo artist Mike Mikus in his CD release party at LopLops Lounge! This show will end a 5 month hiatus from the local stage for both acts, each having played here last on July 15th, when each played at Rotaryfest's Stage 2 and then at Mike's local farewell show at LopLops. However, the former Pixo Control frontman will be home for the holidays to launch his self-titled debut solo album, so if you want to hear his current sound again and/or pick up his new CD and merchandise, be at LopLops on Boxing Night! It's also great to see Id Iota return from the studio with more of their fan favourite hard rock and funk-influenced originals, so keep their return in mind also! Another Stage 2 act from this year will open next month, namely indie/pop duo All Us Others, so keep their rising and talented sound in mind also!

All Us Others will kick off this 19+ concert at 10:00 PM, and admission  will be $10 at the door, but you'll get a digital download copy of Mike's CD if you pay $15 (no word as of yet on CD prices though.) This sounds like a great way to welcome Mike back home (if briefly) and to support his current solo project, and there should be lots of familiar faces and tunes all night on Boxing Day, so visit the official Facebook event page for current details!

Next up, I wanted to acknowledge a recent archive local metal album that I picked up a few months back, and if you saw our review of it from Monday, it won't be a surprise! The album in question is defunct local metal quintet Amethyst's self-titled cassette tape EP from way back in 1990, which was a lucky find at The Rad Zone, and given the band's stature and the tape's current rarity, it was worth the $25 price! I won't rehash much of what was in our review (again, check the post below), but the packaging was well put together for an independent cassette tape release, and the sound quality has held up in the past 27 years! The packaging includes a picture of Amethyst in a guitar surrounded by autographs from fans and friends, front cover artwork by Sean DeCourcy, full credits for performers, writers, and producers, and thanks to their supporters. This was one of those albums that I always hoping to track down, so it's great that I found this one, let alone on the same trip where I found Infrastrate's EP, which is just convenient luck!

In terms of streaming the whole album, you can hear our uploads of "Midnight Queen", "Waste of Time", the original version of "Sky", "Rock First, Roll Later", and the amusing bonus cover of "The Infernal Galop" (a.k.a. the can-can song) at these links, and hopefully the "Waste of Time" video resurfaces in the future also! Amethyst were a very solid band and a highlight of the local scene in the early 1990s, so give their debut EP a listen above & below, and stay tuned for our "Suburban Dream" CD review next!



Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• Hamilton punk/grunge trio Doors & Fours were unfortunately unable to headline at The Algonquin Pub on Saturday, November 11th due to their tour vehicle breaking down while on the road. As a result, local openers Jack Spades & Stegadeth played on with unspecified "surprise guests", though no public word on who they were. As they say, "the show must go on", and hopefully things went over well!
• Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63 announced on their Facebook page on Monday that they will be "taking a bit of a hiatus" after their December 22nd weekend shows in St. Ignace so they can learn new sets, and that "it may be a bit before we are back", but "we are gonna blow your socks off" when they return. At least we have a heads up, and hopefully the planned break is fruitful for 2018 concert plans!
• Band Camp Rejects bassist Ryan Bell is looking for a singer and/or keyboardist for a current band project that he's working on, that would play classic rock and blues music. I do not 100% know on if this is for The Band Camp Rejects or a new band, but note that the BCRs haven't played a public show since February, and in another Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from June, he was looking for guitarists in what could be the same band. If you're interested in trying out, message Ryan at this link or above!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Highway 63) & St. Patrick's Day Weekend Concert Previews!!

As is usually the case, the St. Patrick's Day weekend is yielding a solid batch of local concert action this year, so that's the entirety of this post, alongside a new video from one of the bands in question! Due to the amount, we'll touch on the 415E shows in St. Ignace in tomorrow's post, alongside potential late notice announcements, so don't worry, they're coming! Now, let's begin our weekend previews with a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!

Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63 will return to Dondee Lanes TOMORROW NIGHT for one apparent night only! Apologies for the short notice, the venue only confirmed the show via their Facebook page on Monday, and like with Highway 63's concert there last week, the band themselves haven't announced it publically. Rocking out at the local bowling alley for the third weekend out of four, the Dondee isn't indicating (yet?) if there will be any St. Patrick's Day accoutrements TOMORROW, but definitely have some green stuff ready just in case for if you head down to check out Highway 63's entertaining hard and classic rock hits! I wonder if their teased "travelling" will take them beyond the Dondee or the St. Ignace Kewadin in the near future? TOMORROW'S show has a 21+ age limit, no announced cover charge, and an 8:00 PM start time, rather than the 7:00 PM kick-off last week. Shared to the band's Facebook page on Monday by attendee Sara Gordon, this comes from last week's Dondee show, and it features Highway 63 covering Poison's "Nothin' but a Good Time" alongside a special guest singer: Rock 101's own Scott Cook, under the very Hair Scare-esque guise of "Chet Michaels"! He apparently sang a second song (not filmed here) with Highway 63 that night also, and he held his own on vocals alongside Henry and crew, but the video can be fairly dark, and the camera is sometimes flipped sideways. Fun video with a neat yet unexpected guest spot, so give it a look below, and don't miss Highway 63 at the Dondee TOMORROW NIGHT!



Next up, we'll move to previously announced concerts with the return of local hard rock cover quartet Project 906 to Pickles Bar & Grill in Brimley TOMORROW NIGHT, as they honour St. Patrick's Day and the one year anniversary of their live concert debut! Project 906 (who no longer list blues as a performed genre on Facebook) have had a great debut year in the E.U.P. scene, easily outstripping the success levels of Joe & Will's prior bands like Ten Kings and The Bottom Line, and it's only fitting that they return to Brimley to celebrate their anniversary and partake in the usual drunken celebrations and food specials that St. Patrick's Day entails, so don't miss it if you're in the Sault Michigan or Brimley area! I wonder if this will become a yearly tradition for Project 906? No word though on who's playing at Pickles on Saturday, if anyone. Also, keep in mind the $50 contest for best green attire & pool tournament if you are so inclined.

Closing this preview post in Sault Ontario, we'll start with newer local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck (formerly Nameus), who will topline their own St. Patrick's Day party TOMORROW NIGHT at The Rockstar Bar! This online page-less side project of Mourning Wood gave this show unusually early notice, presumably due to the holiday themes, and you can expect drink specials, green-dyed beer, and even some tailgate action with hot dogs available, so if you're looking for a huge shindig in honor of St. Patrick's Day, this would be a good bet! Note that Soundcheck still haven't publically confirmed the identity of their new band member, but for what it's worth, Lucky 13 guitarist Robin "Bones" Lee (who has guested with Mourning Wood in the past) is a confirmed attendee on the Facebook event page. We'll let you know when the new addition is announced online, whether it's him or not!

And no, I have not heard who's playing at The Rockstar Bar on Saturday, if anyone. Tomorrow's Soundcheck concert has a 10:00 PM start time, no announced cover charge, and a 19+ age limit. Finally, we'll close with the usual weekly matinee concerts from longtime Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison, to be held as expected at Gliss Steak & Seafood TOMORROW & SATURDAY! Fans of his acoustic hard rock covers should be right at home this weekend, especially if you're familiar with his ongoing matinee arrangement at The Quality Inn's house restaurant, so don't bypass these for a more reserved and minimalist blend of hard rock favourites this weekend! Note that while Tym does acknowledge the holiday weekend on the Facebook event page, he doesn't indicate there if there will be any specific promotions, deals, or green coloured paraphernalia for the occasion. Another busy weekend of concerts is ahead in the Soo area, so let's tackle the first half of this weekend's hard rock and punk concerts today! This weekend's previously announced Scarkazm & Banned shows at Kewadin Casino branches and Saturday's March Mash-Up at The Canadian will be covered in tomorrow's weekend concert preview post, so look for them then, but for now, let's start this preview post with a bunch of SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, plus a few already announced!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will return to The Rockstar Bar for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only confirmed via the venue's Facebook event page earlier this week, and no, Soundcheck still don't have an online page to plug shows in advance. Coming a week prior to their already announced St. Patrick's Day show at Rednecks, this show will mark the debut of Soundcheck's new member, though public sources are still mum on his/her identity and/or what instrument(s) they'll tackle with the Mourning Wood side project. When something is publically announced regarding their lineup expansion, we'll let you know, but don't miss Soundcheck's 1980s-centric hard rock covers TOMORROW NIGHT! Note that this is a one nighter due to Saturday night's Rockstar Bar show from local pop rock cover veterans (formerly Cherry) Crush.

Next up, we'll take a brief trip across the border for the next announced show from Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63, who will return to Dondee Lanes for one night only THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, we only heard about this show via the Dondee's Facebook page on Wednesday, and the band proper have yet to acknowledge this concert publically. Just two weeks removed from the Monkey's Uncle successors' last shows at Dondee Lanes, this veteran quartet will continue their non-Rapids Lounge "travelling" with this weekend's gig at the South Mackinac Trail bowling alley, and as usual, their fan favourite covers should find another solid reception on SATURDAY NIGHT, so don't miss out at the Dondee! There is no announced cover charge for this show, which the venue advertises having an oddly early 7:00 PM start time, though expect this to be 21+. Heading back to Sault Ontario, we have one more late notice gig to note here, as prolific local hard rock solo artist Tym Morrison will return to The Barrelhouse Wine & Whiskey on Queen Street East THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, joining his previously announced Gliss Steak & Seafood gigs TOMORROW & SATURDAY! Apologies again for the short notice on the Barrelhouse show, it was only announced via it's Facebook event page this morning. This marks the second straight month where Tym played consecutive Saturdays at the downtown tapas restaurant, which is still unfamiliar for our coverage, but his acoustic hard rock should fit there fine in his fourth show there on SATURDAY! As for his Gliss shows, his long-term arrangement at The Quality Inn's restaurant continues to bring entertaining hard rock covers to patrons twice a week, so don't miss these matinees over the next two evenings either!

As usual for Tym's Gliss shows, expect 6:00 PM start times and no age limit (but remember that this is a formal restaurant), while SATURDAY'S Barrelhouse gig is at 10:00 PM and is 19+, while none of the three have an announced cover charge. Finally, we'll preview one show that fully & completely received advance notice, as local alternative hard rock trio The Din will headline a Fishbowl Festival event at The Gore Street Cafe TOMORROW NIGHT! Similarly to their set at last year's inaugural Fishbowl Festival, The Din will be headlining at the laundromat in the midst of their sophomore festival of arts and culture, which has expanded to additional outside venues this year, but is still primarily held at the cafe. Last year's Din show during the Pisces astrological sign-timed festival was an all-acoustic affair, and while that isn't publically advertised to repeat tomorrow, remember that The Gore Street Cafe often hosts acoustic performers, so don't be surprised if a cajon is present. Local acoustic solo artist Andrew Pucci will open tomorrow, as he did with his dormant punk band Stereo North during last year's Din show at the Fishbowl Fest, and he should provide another quality set of his rising solo material, so don't be late! Previously advertised opening sets by Mike Mikus & Jackson Reed were either cancelled or moved up to last month's garage show with Id Iota.

The only Fishbowl Festival show this year to feature a hard rock or punk band (garage show aside, and barring a late notice addition), this is an ALL AGES show with a 7:00 PM start time, and there is a $5 admission fee, while I have not seen public reference to ticket packages for the entire festival. This should be a fun concert at a well respected and unique venue that seems to be doing well for itself in year 2 of the Fishbowl Festival, so keep tomorrow's show in mind, stay tuned for our preview of Saturday's March Mash-Up next, and here's The Din live in January!
