Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile: Levitate & Necramyth

It's that time of the month again, as I give you the fourth monthly profiles of out of town bands that just happen to have a Saultite in their past or present lineup! Mostly positive feedback from this feature so far, and fingers crossed that you guys will like today's bands that I am profiling! We're leaping even further from home for these two bands, stretching to Prince Edward Island and South Korea for these bands, so let's kick off this month's profiles! And of course, if there's something incorrect, missing, or lacking info/details, please tell me! (UPDATED: November 26, 2013)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Levitate (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island)

Lineup: (Saultites in RED; members not in their last lineup in italics)

Cory Murchison (vocals/guitar)
Brad Stevens (bass)
Chris Knox (drums)

UnsignedBandWeb page: http://unsignedbandweb.com/music/bands/1351/

Local Info: The only local member of Levitate was Cory Murchison, who you'll best know as the singer for local hard rock band Skeyes of Seven, and previously in the similar local band Sense of Truth! He lived out east in Charlottetown before moving here in the mid-late 2000s, and is now one of the more recognizable metal/hard rock frontmen in Sault Ontario. Of course, you'll likely remember Sense of Truth from numerous local concerts over the past 3 years, like winning the 2008 Battle of the Bands to open for the aborted Skid Row concert at Runway Park, backing up notable bands like State of Shock, Ultraviolence, and Econoline Crush, and for their finals appearance at December 2009's Kiss Battle of the Bands, while Skeyes of Seven have been hard at work since with a pair of major concerts and some studio work, so keep an eye out for more from them!

Band Bio: Levitate were active in the Charlottetown scene in the mid-2000s, looks like 2004 was their peak year of activity. There isn't a whole lot concerning Levitate's biography or band history online, but I can tell you that the whole band's still active in music! Cory's working on a new band, while bassist Brad Stevens has since moved to Halifax, where he's played bass for area rock bands Stone Mary and Danny Mainstreet! Chris Knox is still in P.E.I., where he's played drums for bands like Seventh Stone. None of their bands are really "metal", but there's some great stuff there, so check them out if you want!

How do Levitate sound? Not bad, they have a nice groove and the band sounds like they had great chemistry! Cory sounds good vocally, his tone and style hasn't changed since 2004, but that's not a bad thing! I think he's a stronger singer now, but his Levitate singing worked very well! Nice guitar work too, I think his guitar playing is a bit underrated! They have two songs online: "Waiting For You" is catchy, I like Chris' drumming, and the riff is cool, though the abrupt ending threw me off guard. "With These Eyes" is cool too, it makes nice work of effects to start the song! It's a slower longer song than "Waiting For You", gives more of an introspective side than I expected! It has heavy choruses, though still slower, they mold pretty well! Good quality too, and if you're looking for similar material to Cory's local projects, maybe Levitate will tide you over! For more, check out their song "Waiting For You" below!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Necramyth (Seoul, South Korea)

Lineup: (Saultites in RED; members not in their last lineup in italics)

Pedro "Urlok" Chae (vocals/guitar)
Herlock (guitar)
Johan (bass)
David "Veillko" Gold (drums)

Blackheim (guitar)
Opposer (bass)
Jin Rock (drums)
NiavEvarc (session guitar)
Lee Woong-Beom (session drums)

MySpace page: http://myspace.com/necramyth
Last.FM page: http://last.fm/music/necramyth
Spirit of Metal page: http://spirit-of-metal.com/groupe-groupe-Necramyth-l-en.html

Local Info: Woods of Ypres frontman David Gold was well known for his many appearances as drummer in external projects, and one of the most prominent was Necramyth! Alongside bands like Gates of Winter, Thrawsunblat, and Will of the Ancients, David's most exotically located was Necramyth, who were based out of Seoul, South Korea. David joined Necramyth during a one year stay there as an English instructor from 2007-2008, and his appreciation of the area never faltered, from the release of Necramyth's last album through his old Practical Art Records label to his planned South Korea metal documentary, which was never completed before his sudden death in December 2011.

Band Bio: Necramyth were founded in 2001, and released two albums prior to David's union with the band. Numerous lineup changes impacted Necramyth, with only frontman Pedro "Urlok" Chae a constant presence. David joined Necramyth in 2007, I think he replaced "Jin Rock" as the band's official drummer. With Necramyth, he took the stage name "Veillko" once again, as he used while in Will of the Ancients. David drummed with Necramyth for a number of shows during his time in the Far East, and it's from that time when he and the band began recording their last studio album, "Slaughter of the Seoul"! It was released in December 2009, initially as the bonus disc with copies of Woods of Ypres' "Woods IV: The Green Album". The band split up around that time when Urlok left, but you can now purchase their last album online, prominently on iTunes, and Urlok now fronts the Spanish metal band Embloodyment.

Brutal band, Necramyth were, and if you like death and thrash metal, you'll wanna check them out! Urlok has some great death growls, the guitar is awesome and definitely moshworthy! Bass is good too, and David was as good as always on drums, so no complaints drumwise! They're one of those bands that will rip your face off with their heaviness, and it's a shame they could never come here for a show! You guys should take notice, so check Necramyth out if you want some very heavy death metal! Nice melodies too, more or less, it's well played and you can tell there's skill here and not just loud music! Check out more from Necramyth at this location, and here's a live clip of Necramyth (with David) playing their song "Ravenouz Ritual" from a show in October 2007!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And so ends this month's profiles of two more out of town bands with local representation! Next month's profile post will likely be nearer to the end of the month, I'm shooting for May 18-24th. What bands will I feature? I plan to profile Port Colborne, Ontario's Human Disorder (featuring Saultites Jason Taillefer and Joe LaVergne from Phatstick) and Lansing, Michigan's Summon (featuring local drummer Mikey Bishop!) Stay tuned for that, and much more on The Sault Metal Scene, including tomorrow's review of tonight's Garden of Bedlam fundraiser, the FM radio poll's results, the new SMS poll, and more!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Crued & Orange October), Rotaryfest Info, And More!

It's news time! I've missed a lot over the past week, but now we can work towards getting you all caught up once again, and kicking things off today are some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!! And if you notice something missing, no worries, that's coming in an upcoming post too!

Firstly, this should interest fans of a major band that's been here before! Crued, The World's Number One Tribute To Motley Crue are coming here in a couple weeks! Based out of Toronto, Crued have a really cool stage setup and costumes identical to most eras of Motley Crue's storied history (They'll be rocking 2006 "Saints of Los Angeles"-era gear for this show), and they have the sound to back it up! So if you wanna rock out to some live Crue hits, you'll wanna be where? The Canadian Nightclub! When? May 1st, and I apologize for the short notice of the show, it's not well advertised locally. A start time of 10:30 PM is listed, and bring cash too for a cover, cause I doubt it's free! And yes, it's 19+. For more details, visit this location to confirm your attendance! They definitely have the goods, I'll sadly be out of town when they're playing this show, but hopefully there's a good turnout! For more information on Crued, and to check out some of their versions of Motley Crue classics, check out their official MySpace page!

The other new shows I have are courtesy of a Michigan band that are finally coming back up here for shows! Muskegon hard rockers Orange October are finally back in Sault Michigan for a pair of weekend shows next month! I don't think they've been here since, at the latest, early last year, so it's been a long time coming! They'll be playing at The Satisfied Frog on the last weekend of the month, playing there on Friday, May 28th and Saturday, May 29th! Start times of 10:00 PM are given on their MySpace page, and knowing shows at The Frog, there shouldn't be a cover. These should be fun shows, especially for those of you that miss Orange October! Solid accessible hard rock, really catchy too, I like Brian Swisher's vocals! Click on the above links for more info on Orange October, hopefully some of you can make it out!

On a personal note, that weekend with the Orange October shows is the last weekend where I'll be under American drinking age. So close and yet so far!

Now for a handful more news stories (And don't you worry, there's more later this weekend!) Starting things off is more info on Sault Ontario's longest running music festival, Rotaryfest! No word on metal bands on the main stage, but here's something that could apply to the metalheads of the area! For a sixth straight year, Rotaryfest is putting on The Tenaris Second Stage as part of this year's music festivities, where Square 1 of Queen Street East will once again be shut down, and local acts will hit the stage there to rock downtown! This year, the Second Stage will be on July 1st from 1:00 PM until midnight, and who's playing? We don't know, and that's where you guys come in! As always, the open call's out for bands of any genre to send in entries to possibly be added to this year's Rotaryfest lineup, and maybe YOU will be on the Second Stage this year!

If you'd like to play in this year's Rotaryfest, here's what you need: You need a professionally released CD (or mp3 files of it if you're submitting online), with at least three good quality original songs that you own the copyright for. You also need a press packet with a band biography, a good quality photograph of the band, links to internet websites/pages/videos, and optional press clippings. Preference will be given to bands with released or planned pro-quality material. If you are interested in compiling all this to submit to Rotaryfest for consideration for a spot on the Second Stage, you can submit it two ways: Online by clicking here (might be easier, if you want my advice), or by mailing it all to this address:

Tenaris Second Stage selection committee
c/o The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie
364 Queen Street East
Sault Ste. Marie, ON
P6A 1Z1

Keep in mind that any CDs, photos, press clippings, or papers that you send to Rotaryfest will NOT be returned to you, for whatever reason, so keep that in mind. The deadline to submit your entries is MAY 7TH, so get on that if you want to play at Rotaryfest! More info can be found at SooToday's article on the Second Stage, and if you have questions, e-mail ken.desaulnier@shaw.ca with them! Hopefully this year's Rotaryfest is a blast, though I was curious as to the lack of metal last year. Rotaryfest has hosted prominent metal bands in the past, like Gates of Winter and Stillbroke (you can see pics of them on the Second Stage front page) yet last year we were completely dry for it. So come on metalheads, send entries in! And even if there's no metal, it should be a fun festival, it always is, bring the family out and enjoy yourselves!

And finally for today, I can scratch a local metal CD off of my wish list, as I am now in the possession of The Harsh Heads' lone disc, "First Hated Then Forgotten"! Recorded as cassette demos way back in 1994, the songs never found an actual release until 2005 when copies were made into CDs and distributed locally! Prominently featuring Destroilet/Billy Bastards mainman John Conway and his Billys bandmate Aaron Gibbs on drums, they were a prominent fixture in the local punk/metal scene in the early-mid 1990s as teenagers, and their album is pretty good stuff, nice punk/thrash sound, fast and unrelentless! And I give HUGE thanks to John's Destroilet bandmate Christian Foisy for helping hook me up with the mp3s from the album, and I was able to get the liner notes from The Harsh Heads' MySpace page, so all is well on that front! Thanks Chris!

So now that I have the album, I'll tell you guys this much: There WILL be a review of "First Hated But Forgotten" in the coming months, and I have uploaded the whole album to YouTube! All 13 songs are now streamable on The Sault Metal Scene's YouTube channel, along with a little bonus: The early '90s public access TV interview with guitarists Hugh Merz & Bob Bromley Jr. that was only previously available on Photobucket! NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT OR ILL WILL IS MEANT IN UPLOADING THE ALBUM OR THE INTERVIEW ONTO YOUTUBE! This is great stuff that the world should see, because the more exposure it gets, the better! I'll link you guys to the first track on "First Hated Then Forgotten", entitled "Violence", but click here to check out the rest of this album that shouldn't be forgotten!

That's all for now, but here's what's coming up on The Sault Metal Scene! Tomorrow, there will be my profiles of two more out of town bands with local members (Levitate and Necramyth), while Sunday will have both my review of the Garden of Bedlam fundraiser tomorrow night (I AM GOING!) and all kinds of stuff pertaining to the SMS poll! And yes, somewhere in there, there will be a news post with some more exciting news! Stay tuned everyone, there's much more coming!

(P.S. Does ANYONE have the As It Stands, Foothill Road, or Infrastrate albums?! How hard is it to find them? I am willing to reasonably pay for copies, and will take mp3s and album scans if need be!!!)

Weekend Concert Previews & Lion Ride's Openers In May!

First of all, before we get to anything local, I have to mention this, seeing how it's shaken up the metal community. The Sault Metal Scene sends it's deepest condolences out to the family, friends, and bandmates of Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele, who died yesterday of heart failure at the age of 48. Type O Negative were one of my all-time favourite goth/doom metal bands, and I always loved Peter's unique deep baritone voice. Often depressing, but always engaging and quite metal, they're the reason I'm into doom metal at all! Never got to see them live, I wish I could have. R.I.P. Peter!

Now, I wanna apologize for the lack of posts since Monday, homework and studying is a pain in the ass, I haven't had a whole lot of time for general SMS housekeeping. Now that I have a bit of free time, I will preview this weekend's stacked lineup of concerts! I don't really like piling too much news in a post, so I'll just have one extra story: The openers for Lion Ride's show here in May, though plenty of other news is forthcoming! So let's get started with a trio of shows this weekend in Sault Michigan!

Marquette hard rockers Nudge will be back at The Satisfied Frog this weekend for a trio of concerts! TONIGHT, they'll be playing a solo set of your favourite metal and hard rock covers, before breaking out their full electric sets tomorrow and Saturday! Each show starts at 10:00 PM, there is no announced cover, but bring your cash, cause they'll have band t-shirts for sale for $10! Expect more great sounding renditions of your favourite songs, so get some type of alcoholic beverage and head on down to The Frog! I recommend going this weekend if you're on the fence, because they won't be back up here until August, so seize the moment! Confirm your attendance at the official Facebook event page, check out more from Nudge at this location, and for a video preview, here's a clip of Nudge covering the Ozzy Osbourne classic "Mama I'm Coming Home" from a 2008 concert in Skandia, Michigan!

Quick detour back to Sault Ontario for a second, as another rock act goes unplugged for a set! Only this time, it's Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison, who'll take the stage at The Bottoms Up Lounge for a set tomorrow night! Unusually, there's no solo show anywhere in the area for Saturday, usually Tym plays two shows at two venues on a given weekend. So if you want some solo Tym Morrison goodness, you'll wanna be above Vincenzo's tomorrow night! There's no cover charge, everything starts at 10:00 PM, so head on out if you wanna enjoy come cold beer and hot music! For more information on this concert, click here! Get more info on Tym's solo act by visiting his official website, which has audio and video clips from Tym and Caveman Morrison alike! No video of his solo stuff online yet though.

Back in the States for the other concert across the river this weekend, as local hard rockers Riot! By Night hit the road for a show in Rudyard, which is just outside of Sault Michigan! They'll be at Dan's Place on Saturday night, the same venue that Absolute (who shared members with R!BN) frequented during their heyday! That was when I didn't know that it was actually a concert venue and not some guy named Dan's place. Stupid me! I don't know a ton about this show, just that it starts at 9:00 PM and there is no announced cover charge. Hell, I still don't know how Riot! By Night definitively sound! But from all accounts, they're an impressive band with a good grasp of their sound, they should deliver a great set on Saturday! Click here for more info on the band.

Back to Canada for the last two shows, and we'll leave the earlier show for last this time, because of it's size and importance. Sault Ontario hard rock cover band Turner Up WILL BE PLAYING on Saturday night at The Canadian Nightclub! Now the extra emphasis is not because of it's short notice announcement, we've been through that already. I'm reinforcing it's status because of the fire that took place Wednesday at The Upper Deck Lounge. That's the upstairs bar/restaurant/lounge that's directly above The Canadian at The Knights Inn. In case you didn't hear, a fire of "suspicious origin" ignited on Wednesday on the patio, causing thousands of dollars in damages. SooToday reports had said that The Canadian itself may have suffered smoke damage, but if anything did happen, it wasn't enough to close it or The Upper Deck Lounge! Both are open, just obviously stay away from the patio or anywhere with police tape, as there's an investigation going on. So, let me reiterate: TURNER UP ARE STILL ON FOR SATURDAY NIGHT!

Back to concert info, Turner Up are playing in honour of the birthday of a person named Jenny, according to a Facebook event page created by guitarist Len Ward! They'll take the stage after 10:30 PM, merchandise will be available (likely t-shirts), and I'd expect a cover charge of around $3. Should be a fun show, nice to see that no fire can stop the rock! Remember, the heaviest songs will be in their last set, so don't be discouraged early! Click here to confirm your attendance, and for a preview, here's a live video of Turner Up's version of the Def Leppard classic "Hysteria"!

And finally for the previews, the biggest show of the weekend! On Saturday, Garden of Bedlam finally host their fundraiser concert/pub! Designed to raise funds towards the recording of their first full-length album, it will take place in Garden River this Saturday at the Garden River Community Center! And yes, Garden River is relatively close to Sault Ontario, only a few minutes outside of town! While Garden of Bedlam will take the stage for a concert set, there's much more in store! At 5:00 PM, there will be a pasta dinner, followed by the performance itself! There will be raffle prizes available to draw on (they're not announced, but the original fundraiser date's page said The Rad Zone, Forsaken Tattoo Studio, and Wal-Mart would be donating prizes.) After the performance, the night turns 19+ (sorry kids) with a dance! If you need a designated driver, or a ride back to town in general, a chartered bus will be available from the Community Center to get you home.

Admission is a flat $10 at the door or in advance, contact the band on Facebook if you want to make an advance payment. If not, bring cash with you on Saturday! This WILL be your last chance to see Garden of Bedlam live prior to their studio sessions, so if you wanna see them before the summer, Saturday's your last opportunity! Click the above link to confirm your attendance and get more information, and of course, check out their new website! So if you wanna support one of the most prominent local metal bands, and get some supper and draw entries out of it, be there! I hope to be, I just need to secure a ride and what have you. If I'm there, and I hope to be, I'll have a review and photo album posted on Sunday! For a preview of this special fundraiser concert, here's a video clip of Garden of Bedlam performing their original song "New Rain"!

Finally for this post, I have to mention this today for the magnitude of it: Lion Ride have announced the openers for their concert here on May 22nd at The Canadian Nightclub, and it's none other than Sense of Truth! This will be Sense of Truth's first local concert since February (coincidentally, also at The Canadian), and will mark the first time the two bands have shared the stage since December, when both bands made the finals of the Kiss Battle of the Bands! Excellent news, maybe we'll get some more glimpses of their upcoming EP with their set! If I hear any more news concerning this show, I'll have it right here! For now though, confirm your attendance at the official Facebook event page!

OK, so here's my planned SMS schedule for the coming days: Tomorrow, I'm planning a post outlining news I've bypassed or missed in the last week (Rotaryfest info will be one of the bigger stories.) Saturday will be my profiles of Levitate and Necramyth, two more out of town bands with local representation, and Sunday will 100% have the results of our current poll on FM radio! If I'm at the Garden of Bedlam fundraiser (I really hope to be), the review of that will be Sunday too! So even though posting was slow this week, this weekend is chock full of new stuff, so don't let time pass you by, check out The Sault Metal Scene instead!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Turner Up), A New Local Band, And More!!

Happy Monday everyone, metal news and updates from Sault Ste. Marie are back today, including a new local band, and starting today's post is a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT! So here's what you need to know!

Once again, local hard rock cover band Turner Up have a relatively short notice show announced, happening THIS SATURDAY at The Canadian Nightclub! I first saw signs of this show when guitarist Len Ward posted a message on the wall for the event page for Garden of Bedlam's fundraiser show (which is the same day), though it wasn't officially band announced, so I didn't mention it until they did. And now they have, and nothing's terribly different from their usual shows! They'll be rocking out from 10:45 PM-2:00 AM, expect the heaviest stuff in their last set, and make sure you have both ID (19+) and some change to cover entry! Should be a fun show, they always turn in a good performance, though I will in all likelihood be out in Garden River for the fundraiser show. Still, if you wanna enjoy some good hard rock in town, you know your options for Saturday! Confirm your attendance at the official Facebook event page!

Next up, we have a new local band to add to the band listings! I've heard about this band, to be honest, for a few months, but didn't have a general idea about their sound until the other day, I just knew they played "classic/current rock". Well the band in question is Sneaky Pete, and what do you know, they are hard rock enough for SMS attention! Drummer Mike Oakley e-mailed me a nice band biography with some extended information on the band, and it says that the band has been in existence since last spring, with their current lineup settling in the fall. The band now comprises of Oakley on drums, Bill Brouillard on guitar (both share vocals), Mario Carlucci on lead guitar (you'll recognize him from local bands like Foothill Road & Exodus), and Dave Grimaldi on bass! Musically, they have a wide variety of influences, but there's metal to go around! The band have covers in the works from bands like AC/DC, Metallica, Velvet Revolver, and Godsmack, among many other bands of varying genres! They plan to play their first shows in the summer, so be on the lookout!

For more on Sneaky Pete, visit their official Facebook page! No concrete word yet on a live debut for them, but you'll be sure that I'll have it for you guys when it comes out! These guys sound promising, I can't wait to see them live! Also, FYI, they're currently running a bit of a logo contest to find a band logo, if you wanna break out your graphic design or drawing skills, send them a concept! The picture above is the first entry, made on Paint by Half Past guitarist Alain Fletcher! Give it a whirl!

Thirdly, we have our first glimpse of Bad Side guitarist Jason Mapes' solo project! Well, sort of, it's not an original song, it's an acoustic cover of the Kiss classic "I Was Made For Loving You"! It's a well played cover, though it's not the best song for him to show off his vocal abilities, it works especially well acoustically! No solo though. I don't know what next we'll see from Jason's solo stuff, but this is promising, I just hope there's some heavy stuff to show soon, or a preview of an original! Another striking thing: The video effects, they're well done with the transitions and angles! Check it out below, and FYI, Bad Side's current status? They're "on a break" according to the caption for this video on Bad Side's Facebook page. Hmmm, hopefully they'll be back sooner or later! For now though, check this clip out, and more from Bad Side, Jason, and Melissa at the band's YouTube channel!

So, what else is on the newsdesk today? How about another review of "Woods IV: The Green Album"? This was posted on Hellbound on Friday by Natalie Zed (a prior review by Hellbound's Adam Wills came out late last year), and this new one is getting some high praise from Woods of Ypres frontman David Gold, who calls it "possibly the best review...so far." It's long, it's well written, and it really seems to describe of the musical journey Natalie took into "the woods" by listening to this album! You can tell she listened to the whole album and thought about what to write, so many reviews I see only feel like the reviewer listened to a couple songs. She also gives especially high praise goes to Gold and his lyrics, and the production! Great read, check it out at this location!

And finally, want your first glimpse into what 705Quarterly's blog will look like? Creator Nikita Andrews uploaded this test screenshot of what it will look like onto 705Quarterly's Facebook page, and on first glimpse, it looks pretty good, as long as it's kept up to date! Looks like they're gonna cover a wide range of topics to appeal to young Saultites, hopefully it finds a huge audience! Click on the picture to check it out, and I'll keep you posted with updates I have on 705Quarterly! And before anyone asks, no, I don't think the screenshot has any "metal" hints. The pictures look like sample placeholders and most of the text is temporary or fake. We'll get a better content hint soon! In the meantime, if you have things to suggest or contribute, click here for information!

That's all for now, but we have much much more coming up this month, in and amongst my end-of-semester tests and what have you. Sunday, we'll end this month's local FM radio poll and have a new poll raring to go, as well as featuting my profiles of Levitate and Necramyth (two more out of town bands with local members) later this week, so stay tuned for those, and much more news!

Lots Of Assorted News Stories!

Greetings one and all, it's time to get you all caught up on some assorted smaller news stories that I've saved up over the last few days! Let's start with an intriguing new local webzine!

Just launched the other day by Nikita Andrews, it's called 705Quarterly, and it looks to focus on arts, music, culture, and fashion in the Sault area! Articles on local talent and products are planned, with sections based around health, fitness, beauty, music, art, photography, architecture and interior design! Note that music is among these, so that's where it falls into SMS-appropriate news! It will have a daily blog and will have new issues published quarterly (that's every 3 months), but we know little else at the moment. The official website is "coming soon", and the search is still out for potential featured articles and the like! And this is where you, the metalheads and music lovers of Sault Ste. Marie come in! If YOU are a local musician, solo or band, and would like to possibly featured in a future issue of 705Quarterly, e-mail band information and website links (but NOT attachments) to either artists@705quarterly.com or music@705quarterly.com! There's no genre resrictions at all, so if you want some local coverage, why not send them something! It would be cool to see metal in this though!

Also, if any of you guys have aspirations to be a freelance writer, the offer's out there if you want to have an article or interview of your own to be featured there! Submit journalistic-type writing samples to writers@705quarterly.com if you're interested in that! Yes, this could lead to something metal-related depending on the person, so it has some SMS-relevant possibilities. And for all updates and information on 705Quarterly as it comes in, click here! (The discussion board has the open requests for bands/writers.) Sounds potentially very good to me, here's hoping it succeeds where others failed!

Next up, we have some updates from your favourite local college radio station, WLSO 90.1 FM: The Sounds of Lake State! They mostly concern their website, which got some minor upgrades, though it's still largely a Joomla shell. The winner of the station's logo contest still hasn't been announced (at least not publicly), so their old/current logo remains on the site. There is some new updates from the station posted there by WLSO's Brian Springett, who mentions that the station is still looking for on-air DJs, so e-mail klschnepp@lssu.edu if you're a current student at Lake Superior State University who would like to DJ on 90.1 FM! The station also has open positions for Business Manager, Music Director, and Mobile Director, so if you want a big job at the station, head to the Campus Life Office at LSSU for application forms! And finally, Brian reminds us that if you want WLSO to do live broadcasting or mobile DJing at an event, call them at (906) 635-7504!

Nice to finally see them update the site after 7 months, I was wondering if something would happen with that! Remember to listen to WLSO at 90.1 FM or at this location to enjoy a wide variety of student-programmed music, including some awesome metal blocks! I'll keep you posted with more WLSO news as I hear it, as well as any updates to the logo contest!

Now I have two minor updates concerning the Kewadin Casino 25th Anniversary Fesitval in July! We all know what's planned for it by now, the post below has everything we know so far, but it's making the rounds to local news! SooToday posted Kewadin's news release online at this location, while The Sault Star's Frank Dobrovnik has an actual article about it that you can check out by clicking here! I notice that Frank mentioned that Kewadin Casino has always held day-long "annual summer blowouts" in previous years, though I can't recall them hyping that as such. Still, this year's would blow those out of the water! The most substantial news article I've seen since the announcement comes courtesy of SooNews.ca, which features interview excerpts from Kewadin Casino marketing/sales vice president Alan Bouschor! In it, he does confirm that "local and regional bands" will be the "live entertainment" performing from noon onwards each day, among other statements. Read that article at this location! And finally, a Facebook event page is up for it, confirm your attendance by clicking here! This should be one hell of a festival, especially with Meat Loaf, Three Doors Down, and (for us metalheads) Vince Neil & Bret Michaels headlining! I'll keep you posted with updates!

And finally, three quick news stories to close this assorted news post:
  • I recently attended the NHL Alumni vs. Law Enforcement hockey game at The Essar Center, which I won tickets for on SooToday! Why do I mention this? It's because of an ad in the program, which has tons of local business advertisements. On page 40, there's an ad for a business called "Action Music" on 81 Letcher Street, with full address and phone number attached. I searched Google Street View to see what this was and it led me to a house out near Goulais Avenue. I'm thinking this is a music lessons place, but I have no idea for sure. Anyone have some info on Action Music?
  • A new artist has been added to the lineup of May 8th's Destroilet concert at Coch's Corner! Toronto rapper Unknown Mizery joins The Hobo Banditos as the featured attractions for this unique genre hybrid concert, for which Destroilet are opening! Nothing else about this concert has changed. Unknown Mizery isn't bad as far as rappers go, check him out! Very intriguing concert, especially with the genre clash, hopefully it's a huge success!
  • Remember that possible Doom Cannon hardcore concert on May 8th that was being tested for it's potential viability? Well, promoter Jasmin Nott e-mailed confirmed attendees of the possible show's Facebook group to remind people to invite their friends to attend, because the more people that confirm to go, the lower the door price is! That, plus her open reminder for bands to message her if they want to play the show (click here if you want to), leads me to think the show is closer to happening than not happening. I'll keep you all posted!
That's all I have for today, but there's much more coming up very soon, including my next profiles of out of town bands with local members, and much more! Thanks everyone!

MAJOR LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Kewadin Casino 25th Anniversary Festival), And Another Possible Festival?!

HUGE news today, I'd have had it earlier but I've had a busy day in and of itself. Believe me, this is a big deal, a lot more than just a continuation of an earlier story! Hold onto your hats, here's what you need to know! (Oh, and check out my review of I.S.O.M.'s debut album in the post below!)

Remember on Monday when I mentioned that Kewadin Casino was planning a 25th anniversary summer concert festival in late July? Well, a whole pile of info has been released for it, and most importantly, the headlining acts for each night of the festival are confirmed and announced! And metalheads rejoice, as two legendary hair metal singers will be headlining on the first night! Poison frontman Bret Michaels and Motley Crue's own Vince Neil are the confirmed headliners for Thursday, July 22nd of this huge festival! Of course, you'll no doubt recognize Bret Michaels from his work in Poison and as the star of the "Rock of Love" reality series, but he also has five solo albums to his name, including such singles as "All I Ever Needed" and "Go That Far"! Vince Neil, himself a reality show veteran, has three solo albums himself, including notable songs like "Sister of Pain" and "Can't Change Me"! But no worries, they'll have loads of their Poison and Motley Crue classics to go around, so there'll be lots of stuff you'll be likely to remember!

Both are touring in support of new albums, "Custom Built" and "Tattoos & Tequila", and will also be making their long awaited returns to the Sault area! Michaels was last seen here on his 45th birthday in March 2008 at The Dreammakers Theater at Kewadin Casino, though he'd earlier played in Sault Ontario at The Eastgate Hotel in October 2005! Neil of course headlined the first ever concert at the then-Steelback Centre in December 2006 with Motley Crue, though this will be his first ever solo show in the area! As I always do for major shows featuring bands who've been here before, here's two video clips of their last local stops: SooToday's montage of footage from Bret's 2008 concert, and Vince Neil (with Motley Crue) playing "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)" here in 2006!

Now that's just what's metal that I know so far, there's a TON more stuff to say! The headliners for July 23rd and 24th are major too, and I'm sure there's plenty of fans of theirs out there! On the 23rd, Three Doors Down, the multi-platinum rockers from Mississippi, will headline the festival, while on the 24th, legendary rock vocalist Meat Loaf will close the festival on an extremely high note! I know both acts have a ton of fans, so don't bypass a chance to see them if you can help it! There's tons more bands to be announced, including out of town opening acts each night, and three hours of "live entertainment" each day! (I assume concerts will be at least part of that.) And aside from music, there's MUCH more going on for this special 25th anniversary festival! There's tons of entertainment planned throughout each day of the festival, including a golf simulator, bumper cars, Rock Band, a NASCAR simulator, and an electronic bull ride! There will also be vendors yet to be announced daily, and scheduled events like a DJ, a strolling magician, food eating contests, "baggo tournaments" (I think that's basically a bean bag toss), and post-concert fireworks! And last but not least, autograph signings! Thursday, there will be Playboy playmates, Friday has Detroit Lions players, and Saturday? The Fonz! Details to date on the schedule and planned events are available at this location!

Now how's all that sound? Awesome, I hope? Very ambitious and promising, I hope it's a success! And how can it be a success? By us buying tickets, of course! Tickets will cost $50 for a single day of the festival, or $75 for all three days! So all things considered, the three day pass is the best deal, even if you only plan to go two days, because two individual tickets together costs MORE! And really, if you're going to complain about the price, look at the combined value it gives you? Lots of music and entertainment the likes I don't think Sault Michigan's ever had in one festival! Tickets go on sale in a little under two weeks, on April 23rd, so get your wallets ready! Three day passes will be available at The Dreammakers Theater box office ONLY on April 23rd before being released online as well the next day. Single day passes will be available both ways from the get-go. It appears to be entirely outdoors (a'la the Kiss show), and will go on rain or shine, so make sure you prepare for the weather and the outdoors setting!

As soon as I hear more info on this very special 25th anniversary festival, I'll have it right here for you guys, especially where tickets and metal bands are concerned! Click here for everything on this festival as it currently stands!

Closing today's post is more festival news, but of a different type! J.D. Pearce from Coch's Corner (you also know him as Fitswitch and Frightlight's frontman) posted a topic on the new 705 Video Magazine forums where he inquires about bands for a potential Sault Ontario-area festival! Apparently, Labatt (yes, the beer company) contacted him and asked for his help in pulling together bands for a possible concert festival to be held on the last weekend of August in Echo Bay (which is just 20 minutes outside of town!) The rough estimate has 20-22 local smaller bands and 2-4 big name headliners, no listed genre restrictions, and he's looking for our help! This isn't final by any means, but J.D. is looking for input and suggestions about the festival or bands in general, so if you've got something, reply to the topic at this location to offer an idea or tip! Remember, you have to register a new account there to post or reply, old The705Scene accounts didn't carry over. If I hear more on this possible festival, I'll certainly let you all know!

After losing Bell Border Jam and Hempfest, I was worried that we'd be stuck with just Rotaryfest to cater to fans of local concert festivals. Looks like things are looking up, on a pretty big level! I knew with the level of this Kewadin festival (which may become yearly depending on this year's success), I had to make it the major focal point of this post, but don't worry, I have more assorted news coming soon, so stay tuned! Remember, it's July 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, with the metal kicking things off on the 22nd!

Integrated System Of Machines - "Apocalyptic Vision" Review!!

It's that time again, for another local metal CD review! It's my 10th since I started this monthly feature, and we're heading back to Sault Michigan this time around, as this month's review is of the only released album from defunct local epic death metal band Integrated System of Machines, entitled "Apocalyptic Vision"! Released n March 6th, 2008, it was available at the band's concerts, but is now out of print. Lineup information concerning I.S.O.M. is not easy to verify, so if there's a mistake in the band's lineup on this album, or an incomplete spelling, let me know! I believe the lineup that recorded "Apocalyptic Vision" included frontman Bob "Orb Hearthstone" Helsten (now of Powerslug), Chris Sevens on guitar, J. Rizzo on bass, End of Existence/Theater of Night keyboardist Craig "Tubesock" Harrison, Rachel Mender on operatic vocals, and Bart "Black Trab" Rennels on drums.

Currently, "Apocalyptic Vision" is available for free streaming on I.S.O.M.'s Reverbnation page, while I don't believe it's available for purchase on any major music download websites at present. Physical copies may be floating around at local merchants, so keep your eyes peeled! With 10 songs clocking in at over 45 minutes worth of metal, let us begin the review with the album's first song and title track! And remember, I'm not a professional reviewer, these are my impressions and thoughts as I hear each song in order on the album, if something's wrong, misstated, or lacking info, let me know! (Updated on November 6th, 2012)

"Apocalyptic Vision" kicks off the album with a 45 second slow dirge-like keyboard intro from Craig Harrison, which seems to set the tone for the song. Then the heaviness kicks in, and here's my first complaint: It sounds muffled. Nothing's badly played, it just lacks the punch and volume to pull me in because of the production. I imagine these songs would sound much clearer and be harder hitting live! That's not a critique towards the band though, they're certainly not at fault! Orb Hearthstone shows off his death metal vocals very well here, he has an awesome death metal voice that suits the band extremely well, it's too bad he and the band parted ways! Clear too, you can make out words unlike some death metal singers, and I always welcome that! Everything's very nicely mixed, each instrument's easy to make out! Craig Harrison's keyboards don't sound forced, Chris Sevens has some great riffing (though I would have liked a guitar solo), and J. Rizzo's not a bad bassist either, he has some good lines! Honestly, vocals aside, this song doesn't have a real "death metal" sound, the vocals are from where I get that comparison, the song itself has more of a progressive/power feel at points! Great opener, very headbangable, it gives you a good glimpse about what to expect in future songs!

"Road To Valhalla" is second on the album, and the first to feature operatic backing vocals from Rachel Mender. It's shorter and more to the point than "Apocalyptic Vision" was, though not as fast. It has more of a conventional song structure too, but it's still a good song! Orb still sounds great vocally, though the combination of Orb and Rachel singing the chorus simultaneously actually doesn't totally work, they're too different in style for it to really "mesh". Rachel has a good voice that harmonizes well, and aside from the chorus, she totally fits! My other major complaints: The chorus is more repetitive than it could be, and again, no guitar solo. But it is still a catchy song, I like the guitar work from Chris especially! Slower and shorter, yes, but still lively and despite my complaints, it's definitely not a bad song, I just expected more out of it.

Next is the band's self titled song, "I.S.O.M.", which is definitely the album's most commercial track. It's one of two on the disc that go under 4 minutes, it has a typical song structure, and Orb's not growling! He sings with a normal hard rock voice, and honestly, he should use it more, it'd give some extra variety to the other songs, as long as he doesn't overdo it. The chorus is great to sing along with: "Oh noooo, they try to integrate meeeeee!" Listen for yourself and you'll see what I mean. I like the drum intro too, though it would benefit from improved production! Amazingly, it's the album's radio-friendliest song that has the first solo, and though it's short and not mindblowing, it is still well performed, I wanna see more! The song also seems to end abruptly too. Though not their best or most original, it shows some diversity that the first two songs didn't show, and the band could integrate that into future songs! I can picture this making it onto radio if it had better production!

Fourth is "DaVinci's Code", and this is where the band starts to pull together all their best elements into a standout song! The opening builds in a way with some weird backing vocal chanting and instrumental work to a very catchy main riff! Here, Rachel's operatic singing completely works, it flows with the song and doesn't sound forced! Black Trab's drumming is really good, and Craig's keyboards add a nice atmosphere to the background! 3:10 in, the main vocals finally get more diverse, nice to see Orb throw in his clean voice to the heavier songs! And yes, we have a guitar solo! It's slow to pick up, but near the end, it really gets going! It's good, I just wish there was more! But like with the last song, it has an abrupt ending which I didn't see coming. It's fast and heavy and really well played, the band really is hitting their stride after some mixed results on the last couple songs. Definitely my favourite song so far!

After that, we get "Stays The Same", which has the most reserved start to any song so far, a very melodic softer opening with completely clean vocals from Orb, who really impresses me here, he has a pretty good range that I'd like to see him use more! A lot of these songs could work equally well, or better, with the normal singing in place of the death growling! After about a minute though, things pick up, with some awesome keyboard work and some good harmonizing between Orb's death growls and Rachel's operatic vocals, they definitely work better here! The song alternates between "soft and heavy" twice before we end with a guitar-driven section that sounds good, though an actual solo would have been a great capper! This song is one of the best examples of their varying styles, showing the lighter and heavier sides equally, I really like this song too! "Screams" begins the album's second half with a drum-driven opener and a cool chugging riff that comes about as close to typical death metal as you'll see on "Apocalyptic Vision"! There's even breakdowns past the halfway point! Despite the name though, there isn't a lot of screaming as much as just death metal vocals. Nice harsh ones too! This time, Rachel's singing is slightly drowned out, but it's not bad for accompaniment! The ending really works too, it has a lot of energy Black Trab's drums are really good! Excellent song, especially if you want something more "death metal"!

...OK, I change my mind, THIS is the most "death metal" song! "Words To Say" is absolutely the heaviest thing on this album, the riffs are brutal and Orb sounds especially fierce! It's also the shortest song, at 3:36, and they pack this song full! The backing vocals from Rachel Mender are really out of place in the chorus, which is not a critique of her abilties, she's really good, but it just doesn't fit. That aside, I'm really impressed with this song, this WILL get a mosh pit going at a live concert! The ending is especially fast, the guitar work has some good harmonics, I'm just missing a solo, the song could use a nice fast blazing solo! Great great song, this might just be my favourite! Track 8 is "March of the Norsemen", which is also the album's longest and it has an absolute epic of an opening, perfect for a march or entrance, almost sounds like it came from a video game! Not the heaviest or fastest song, but it's well crafted, possibly the best musically on the album! Awesome lyrics about vikings, and some excellent guitar work and bass lines! The best solo on the album is on this song too, they put all their talent into making this song the album's best, and it shows! It's not my personal favourite, but it's right up there, and you'll wanna check it out! Also, the ending is extra-fast, but also ends a bit abruptly....what's with that?

The penultimate song is "Last Time", which has a softer opening much like "Stays The Same", soft guitars and clean singing, but if you're expecting a ballad, think again! Nice , heavy, and relatively short, it gets the job done pretty nicely! Drums are well played, and for the first time, Rachel gets some extended solo singing passages rather than serving as a backup or additional singer! I know she's not with I.S.O.M. anymore, but it would have been cool to see her get more solo time on some new material! It's more of the same from older tracks, nothing mindlbowingly different, and no solo, but here's what surprised me: After about 3:08, the song switches to an acoustic guitar ending, Chris plays this well, this would fit especially well if this was the album's last song, but there's still one more to go! "Hunt For The Beast" is the album's closer, and it brings an awesome heavy onslaught to end "Apocalyptic Vision" on a high note! Not as heavy as "Words To Say" to be sure, but still quite a good song! The guitars and bass chug along in a very heavy fashion, the vocals harmonize well, and like I said with other songs, the drums are solid! Great closer in itself, but it ends in a way like "Last Time" did, with a slow section featuring one band member, in this case, Craig on the keyboards! Kind of a depressing slow end, but it completely fits, and makes you want more! Great closer, another highlight!

Overall, "Apocalyptic Vision" is a solid debut album from Integrated System of Machines! The band at the time had good chemistry, supported by some awesome death metal vocals from Orb Hearthstone, gome good guitar work from Chris Sevens, and consistently great keyboard playing from Craig Harrison! J. Rizzo's good on bass throughout too, no complaints there, and Black Trab keeps a good pace on the drums throughout! Rachel Mender sometimes got lost amongst Orb's growling, but she shone bright when the moment was right! For a first effort, you can't expect the world, and I didn't, but there is things to complain about, largest of which isn't the band's fault. The production isn't very good, every song on "Apocalyptic Vision" sounds muffled, and compared to other local bands' albums I have, it plays very quietly and the instruments, though mixed well, seem way too reserved than how the band's collective talent would show, especially the bass. But when I review albums, I review on their musical ability and my own enjoyment of their skill, talent, and writing, not production deficiencies. Maybe that's why I like "Born Again" by Black Sabbath so much even though the production's bad on that, I look for the talent, and I.S.O.M. have it!

I'd also have liked to have seen more solo work, Chris has talent but his solos could stand to be more varied, most of them sounded pretty much the same. He's a great guitarist, he just needs to work on his solos a bit. I'd, again, have loved to see more solo time for Rachel as a singer, hopefully Mara Raven (her replacement) gets some more solo passages on their next album! The production also gets in the way of otherwise-good drumming from Black Trab, and Orb's singing, though 100% awesome, could use some variance on some songs (for example, growled verses, clean choruses.) Maybe the new singer will be more varied? Still, complaints aside, remember this was their debut, and for an independent debut, I couldn't have asked for more! There's some real ambitious songs, a lot of headbangers, and great music all around! I heard that I.S.O.M.'s next album is going to be a concept album based around Hansel & Gretel, and if handled correctly with some better production, it will be something special! Pick up "Apocalyptic Vision" today, look past the muffled sound, and get your horns ready!

So that's this month's review! My next review will be in the second full week of May, and barring the release of a new album from a local metal band (you never know!), my review will be my long-planned re-review of Garden of Bedlam's debut EP! I've been unhappy with my original review of it for months now, so I plan to revisit it to give it a look more akin to my last 10 album reviews, and after that, we'll dip back into the archives this summer, with new releases dotted into the schedule where needed! Lots of albums to get to in the future, but let's not spoil anything I have planned, I want things to be surprises! But don't worry, there will be no skipped months, I have reviews lined up to cover over two years, and counting! And of course, if you have an album I don't (e.g. As It Stands, Infrastrate, Harsh Heads, old cassettes, etc.), LET ME KNOW!

News shall return soon, so stay tuned for all the local metal updates you can handle very soon! Thanks everyone, hope you enjoyed the review!
