I hope everyone's having a good Saturday! Today marks probably our last all-Woods of Ypres post, as believe it or not, our cache of Woods of Ypres news is almost cleared out to the point where adding them into normal posts wouldn't be seen as overkill by some readers! So today, we have some more "Woods IV" & concert reviews, a lengthy new audio interview, and first, here's a new live concert video!
This video comes from Woods of Ypres' concert just last night in San Marcos, Texas, and it's of a medley of two songs from their second album, "Pursuit of the Sun/Allure of the Earth"! We haven't heard these too much in recent performances, so it's cool to finally see some "Woods II" love from fans who shoot live video at Woods of Ypres shows! The medley sees Woods of Ypres playing parts of the songs "Summer's Envy" and "The Ghost of Summers Past", and it's really cool to hear these again on stage! I say hear, not see, because the video quality isn't great. It's very dark, and only scattered body parts and instruments pop out. The audio's fairly good though, that makes checking this video out worthwhile! Uploaded by YouTube user Svarthymn earlier today, you can check it out below!
Next up, here's the final audio interview left in my Woods of Ypres cache, and we've saved the best for last! A recent "bonus" podcast from Vinland Radio was been posted online in April at this location, and it's 51 minutes long, all about Woods of Ypres! The podcast starts with a song from each of the first 3 WoY albums ("A Meeting Place & Time", "Shedding The Deadwood", and "Your Ontario Town Is A Burial Ground") before launching into a 20 minute interview with frontman David Gold! The interview features David Gold discussing the band's fake breakup & his Kuwait work, the "Home" vinyl EP, their lyrical content's impact and feelings, plans for a new "Woods V" album, their current "Pain & Piss" tour, before capping the interview by David selecting a "Woods IV" song to play, that being "Wet Leather"! Nice long interview, and I like how the interviewer gave David free reign to talk as long as he wanted on varying band topics! Solid work, as always, and the Woods of Ypres songs bookending the interview are cool as well! If you want to listen to the podcast, check the links above! The actual interview starts at around 24:48 of the file.
Now to some Woods of Ypres concert reviews, and first, Doc Godin from Metal Storm reviewed Woods of Ypres' concert in Calgary on May 19th! After mixed responses to the openers, he gave good (but short) praise to Woods of Ypres' set, saying that everything was on key! Good stuff, though I wish he'd written more. Click here for his review, along with 4 live photos! Also, Alxs Ness from Abort Magazine reviewed their show in Vancouver on May 22nd, check it out at this location! Also short (to be fair, there was a lot of bands playing), he praised their dynamic sound and called their set "a fitting concert for the supposed Judgement Day"! Nice quick review, check it out at the above links! Another review of the Vancouver show, which was a 25th anniversary concert for a local radio station, was posted online by Hammer Records at this location, where reviewer "James" highly praised them and how they dominated the crowd with diverse harmonies and a professional stage presence! Finally from the Vancouver show, a nice lengthy review of their set was posted onto Hellbound.ca by Kyle Harcott, who went into detail on his enjoyment for the set, calling their set "triumphant" that were even stronger than the last time he saw them! Really nice writeup, click here to check it out!
Finally, here's some more CD reviews of "Woods IV: The Green Album"! Firstly, "Rex_84" of MetalUnderground.com gave "W4" 4 skulls out of 5 on April 16th, praising it's rich melodies and strong sense of sorrow, but docking points for it's length, which helped song quality drop later in the album. Good review though, click here to give it a look! A review on Prog Archives on April 12th gave "The Green Album" 3 stars out of 5, wherein it was called "difficult to describe" and not easy to get into, but still a good effort and an adventurous achievement. Check it out at this location, it has some good constructive criticism! A video review of the album was posted on YouTube by Joshua Armijo, which isn't bad in itself, though he doesn't seem entirely comfortable behind the camera. Though he mispronounced "Ypres", it's not bad, and he favourably reviews the album, it's influences, and he says it's absolutely worth it despite the length. Click here to see the review! One more review today is foreign, but it's positive! Locky Perez from the Spanish metal site Musica Heavy gave it 8.5/10, and through what Google Translate tells me, he goes into some interesting detail when describing the sounds and impact of the album, using translated terms like "fleeing parameters" and "winding territories"! Click here for the interview, and run it through a translator to get an idea of his thoughts!
That's all for now, but stay tuned for a new news post! If I can swing it, I'll try to make it to The Rosie tonight, but if not, have a moshing good time! Thanks everyone!
