Two local metal bands will return to The Roosevelt Hotel on Thursday, August 29th as opening bands for a feast of psychobilly and rockabilly bands from out of town, and those local bands are horror punk/metal quintet Frightlight and local alternative hard rock/blues quartet Sykotyk Rampage! Barring new announcements, this will be Frightlight's second show of 2013 (and first at The Rosie in over a year), and it will see a different lineup, as "Mr. Slim Cadaver" is credited on the Facebook event page as their guest bassist for the show, presumably due to Eddie Fright's out of town school commitments. I don't know who Slim is exactly, but it's still great to see Frightlight playing more, and they should bring the fright to help end August! Sykotyk Rampage's prolific crash sound should also be welcomed in their first Rosie gig since April, so don't miss them either! This show will be headlined by Toronto psychobilly quartet The Creepshow and Montreal rockabilly trio The Hellbound Hepcats, both of which are no strangers to the Soo, and their very fun and original styles are sure to be ready to attract a big crowd to The Roosevelt Hotel in August!
This show (which is Frightlight frontman/promoter Johnny Pints' seventh on the Rosie metal nights' old day since May 2012) has a $10 advance ticket price ($15 at the door), with ticket availability details forthcoming. You must be 19 to attend, and a 9:00 PM start time is advertised. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! It'll be nice to see The Creepshow & The Hellbound Hepcats back for another night of hellbilly hits, and the local bands will add nicely, so don't miss this show on August 29th, and stay tuned for updates!
Next up, here's our first video glimpse at new local metal band The Hydra's Teeth! The new act featuring Late & Loud alumni Brendan Christie & Benn Garside alongside veteran local drummer Roy Kreutzberger are featured in two new band practice videos that were uploaded to Brendan's YouTube channel on Saturday, and they're of original songs named "The Circle" and (as embedded below) "Live by the Axe or You'll Die by the Sword". The angle and audio quality of each is good (though the camera could be zoomed in a bit), and while these are instrumental takes, there's a familiar classic metal sound that Late & Loud fans should enjoy! I've embedded "Live by the Axe or You'll Die by the Sword" below, but give both songs a look, and stay tuned for more updates from The Hydra's Teeth as they roll in!
Also in new videos, Ashes To Dust guitarist Alex Hemy has uploaded a new solo cover video onto his YouTube channel! His first in three months, this is a cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' On The Heartbreak", and it combines numerous angles of him playing the song with the original as a quiet backing track. Another very solid cover, and he definitely knows the song well, but I do wanna hear him tackle some heavier Def Leppard material (also, why's he so dressed up?) Check out Alex's new cover video below!
Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news stories from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band or person's name:
- Local sludge/death metal band Giwakwa are the 10th and final confirmed band for this year's Sewer Swampstravaganza on August 10th at The Oddfellows Hall! This will be their first appearance in this series, but singer Josh Stephney played at last year's edition with The Bear Hunters, and he and Nolan Rainville were briefly scheduled for the 2011 installment with Bring The Fallen before dropping out. Solid addition, and hopefully the metal and punk will flow all day come August!
- Ex-State of Misery drummer Nick Kainula is looking for a singer & bassist to complete a new melodic death metal/hardcore band that he's launched. For the vocals, screaming and death vocals are a must, and if you're interested in filling either role in this new band, message Nick at this location or through his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post yesterday! No word though on if this means anything negative for his most recent band With Blood Build Character (formerly Unbound.)
- Essar Centre events manager Trevor Zachary is no longer employed by the city, as per articles last week in The Sault Star and SooToday. The public reasoning for his release is still vague, but there was an ongoing investigation relating to finances. I won't pass judgement on either side for what happened, but best of luck to Trevor in the future, and I will thank him for some of the major concerts we did get at the arena in the late 2000s!
That's all for today, but stay tuned for last month's poll results and this month's poll on the site tomorrow! Thanks everyone!
