A Missed Concert Apology, More Ripcordz Cancellation Fallout, And New Videos!!

Before we dive into what is looking like a little busier concert weekend in the Twin Saults, let's look at some news and notes from both sides of the border, including new video uploads, updates on a major recent concert cancellation, and more, so here's what you should know!

To lead off this post, I wanted to apologize for a missed concert in this past weekend's round of previews. Given how slight last weekend's hard rock/punk slate was, knowing about this one would have been extremely optimal! This past Saturday, local acoustic punk duo Dos Amigos returned to Northern Superior Brewing Co.'s on-site Tap Room for a one-nighter, after playing their third announced show there in June, but unfortunately, the venue only plugged the gig on their Facebook page that morning and it completely slipped us by. On Dos Amigos' end, the BookcluB side project also never acknowledged the booking on their Facebook page prior. I profusely apologize for missing this show regardless, but acoustic acts do well at the unique setting of the Tap Room, and hopefully Mikey & Dustin had a good show on Saturday! Actually, we can see if they did for ourselves now, as they shared a video from the concert the following day!

The first public video on Dos Amigos' Facebook page (and their first post there of any kind in almost four months), the video sees Mikey & Dustin covering Rancid's "Roots Radical" and doing a solid job of adapting it to a two man unplugged setting! I wish the filmer got more than 24 seconds, but everything sounds and looks good at the Tap Room. and the vertical camera angle isn't as objectionable because both guys are in frame without issue. Give it a watch below, and apologies again for missing this show in last weekend's previews, I'd have happily covered it with even a day's notice!

Next up, here's more on the mid-show cancellation of last month's Ripcordz concert at The Distraction in Sault Ontario! In a follow-up article on SooToday on July 30th, Sault Fire Services public education officer Aaron Gravelle confirmed that the show was cancelled following "a fire safety complaint", with police and fire crews determining that the basement space didn't have sufficient fire/life safety measures in place, and was thusly not approved for use as a concert venue. Fire Services and the city's building division will reportedly work with The Distraction towards ensuring "future building compliance", but whether this means that concerts will return to the East Street nightclub and when, I don't know. In the article, Ripcordz frontman Paul Gott is interviewed in text and in an attached video by contributor and former Honest Job frontman Drew Armstrong, where Paul praised the Soo and small concert venues like The Distraction.

Despite the cancellation, Paul was cordial and respectful on camera about the abbreviated concert and the local scene, let alone the younger generation of punk fans and musicians, and it's a good watch for fans! Unfortunately, I can't embed videos directly embedded onto SooToday (this isn't from YouTube) on the SMS, but give it a watch above, and it includes black & white photos from the local openers' sets!

Finally, let's zip over to Sault Michigan for some relatively rare videos of local classic/hard rock quartet Tarnished's current lineup in action! These actually come from the Fourth of July parade in the Soo last month, where Alex, Josh, Chris, and Ron performed on a float once again (the band as a whole has done this for at least three years now). At least two people posted their own copies of the half hour-long parade route to YouTube, one being user onewxone, who was stationed beside the Ashmun Street Bridge. In his video, Tarnished become audible 24:30 into the 30 minute video (which was edited slightly in post-production to reduce the dead air between floats). While in earshot, Tarnished were covering The Go-Gos' "We Got The Beat" and while you only see them on camera for about 25 seconds, you can hear them at varying levels of clarity for two minutes before and afterwards.

Click here to jump straight to Tarnished's spot in the parade, but I won't embed that particular video here because of the sharp stationary angle of the procession. Embedded below is the parade video shot by Sunshine Gregory, who was filming further down the route at the corner of Ashmun and West Portage Avenue, capturing the procession with more of a side view, and not on a tripod. In Sunshine's video, you can first hear Ron's drumming at 24:17, and the guys are covering Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It" at this juncture. Like they did for at least part of last year's July 4th parade, Alex & Josh walked alongside the float while both cameras were rolling, with Chris and Ron performing on the float itself, and you get a better view of that in Sunshine's video given her placement en route. Here, Tarnished are only on camera for 16 seconds, but Sunshine was moving her camera around to better capture what an attendee might see.

You can hear Tarnished finish the song, so they're audible in this parade video for about 80 seconds. The guys sound good on both covers, and Alex was definitely having fun engaging with the crowd from what was captured! If you're curious, the Independence Day parade actually featured two bands, as the E-Free Church's Sault Ste. Marie campus had contemporary Christian performers on their float, which rode down midway through the parade. They had a camera of their own rolling for their own parade video on the float itself, which gives a unique view from the other side, but check out the full parade and Tarnished's performances there above and below!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Sylo & Tarnished!!)

Just before things get rolling on the SMS, today marks our eighteenth anniversary since launching the original group. No major plans to commemorate the day, but just a brief thank you acknowledgement to all of our readers and followers for continuing to stick around and read/engage with our content, and here's to another big year for local metal, hard rock, and punk music ahead! For our first batch of weekend concert previews for July 2025, we have an all-LOCAL CONCERT ALERT post, mostly of the SHORT NOTICE variety, so here's what you should know!

Sault Michigan hard rock/classic metal quartet Tarnished have a busy and all-short notice concert weekend ahead, and before we get into all three gigs, I apologize for the short notice on all of them, Tarnished only announced the three via their official Facebook page earlier today. Is that a record for late notice gig announcements by one local band at different venues on a given weekend? Regardless, Tarnished will kick off the Independence Day long weekend TONIGHT when they return to the annual Fourth of July parade in Sault Ste. Marie, marking their fourth straight year playing on a float during the parade! Of course, the idea of a SMS-amenable band playing during a parade is still uncommon for bands other than Tarnished, but it'll be like a brief concert coming to you, which will be neat if you're checking out the parade TONIGHT! Obviously, this is free and all ages, but where can you see Tarnished along the parade route?

As last year, the parade begins TONIGHT at 7:00 PM behind the U-Haul on Davitt Street, running until Magazine Street, and will move north along West 14th and Ashmun Streets, as well as West Portage Avenue, so pick a good spot to enjoy the parade, with some hard rocking tunes from Tarnished alongside! Weather-wise, 9&10 News is calling for mostly cloudy skies with weather around 70° (21° Celsius), which sounds like fine conditions for a parade! Click here for complete details on the parade itself. Tarnished will continue the rocking in short notice show #2, as Alex, Josh, Chris, and Ron will set up shop at The Savoy Nightclub TONIGHT at 10:00 PM! This will be Tarnished's first show at the 117 West Portage Road bar in over two years, and while The Savoy's modern social media presence isn't high, it is good to see that they're still open and hosting live music there! This is a 21+ concert with no announced cover charge.

Finally for Tarnished's busy long weekend, they'll return an hour south to St. Ignace TOMORROW NIGHT as part of the annual Music By The Bay summer concert series at American Legion Park at 200 North State Street, and in one more new show announcement, they'll return there on Saturday, August 16th as well! Good to see Tarnished spreading their wings and helping prove that there's more going on for St. Ignace concert venues than just Kewadin Casino, so keep TOMORROW'S show in mind! Click here for the full daily schedule at the Music In The Bay series too, it runs until the end of August. This is another free & all ages concert taking place from 7:00-9:00 PM, and while the stage is covered for the band's sake, be advised that 9&10 News is calling for a 40-60% chance of rain TOMORROW with 75° weather (24° Celsius). Visit the above links for more on Tarnished's shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, and for a preview, here they are live!

Finally for this all-LOCAL CONCERT ALERT post, Sault Ontario hard rock quartet Sylo will return to Reggie's Place TOMORROW NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced on the venue's Facebook page on Sunday (remember, Sylo don't have an active Facebook page). This has been a long time coming, as Sylo haven't played a show on record at Reggie's since 2022, so it will be neat to see Eli, Alder, Owen, and Jakob back at this Queen Street staple for a rare solo headlining appearance! Sylo have been making the most out of their return to active gigging this summer, and here's hoping for more of the same entertaining originals and covers from this talented young foresome TOMORROW! This is a one-nighter due to or resulting in classic rock cover quartet RPM playing there tonight. TOMORROW'S Sylo concert is at 9:30 PM with a 19+ age limit and no cover. See above for more details, and here's Sylo live!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more weekend concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!

Tarnished & Exit 808 Concert Previews, Plus New Videos!!

For phase #2 of our weekend concert previews, let's head south to Sault Michigan and area, as there are some hard rock concerts happening there this weekend too! Yes, I am well aware of Saturday night's Ace Frehley-headlined concert in St. Ignace, the plan is to preview that one alongside the Sunday concerts in Sault Ontario in a post hitting the site by Saturday morning. Otherwise, here's what you should know!

We'll lead off today in Sault Ste. Marie, where local hard rock band Exit 808 will make their Kewadin Casino debuts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rapids Lounge! Their first ever double booking of Friday & Saturday nighters on one weekend at one venue, these shows will reportedly see the debut of their new permanent bassist, only credited as "Myke". We'll let you know when more is revealed on his identity, but he won't be playing all weekend, as recent regular fill-in Blaze Beairl will also be handling the low end in some capacity (the band's Facebook post yesterday said that they'd be "sharing the stage"). Also, Exit 808 will welcome Project 906 guitarist Joe Jenkins as a guest for this weekend's shows, likely filling in for Will Robbins given that Alex Zimmerman is tagged in the Facebook post. Joe is a solid and established name, so hopefully he adds well to Exit 808's double vocalist-led hard rock sound!

These Rapids Lounge dates are 9:00 PM affairs with 21+ age limits (Blaze performing aside) and no cover charges. See above for more details, and for a preview, we have two new Facebook videos of Exit 808 to share from their show at The Merchants Bar on June 29th! Both filmed by Kishketog Lynn Mary of the Marquette-based Kish Productions, one is of them covering Drowning Pool's "Bodies" (with Dillion Semasky on lead vocals), though it's short and primarily focuses on Blaze, who did perform at least partially that night. Embedded below is a longer 1:44 clip of them covering Skid Row's "18 & Life" with Dillion and Amy Beach trading off on verses and sharing choruses, and Spun's Bob Libick guesting on bass. Not bad at all, and good way of balancing the two vocalists amongst a solid crowd of attendees at The Merch, so check it out for yourself below!

Next up, let's head further south to the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino, where their busy concert weekend begins indoors via Sault Ste. Marie classic metal/hard rock trio Tarnished's return TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Northern Pines Lounge! Surprisingly, these will be Tarnished's first shows at the St. Ignace Kewadin since 2022, so if you've missed them there or want a relative change of scenery, keep their hard hitting originals and covers in mind! The band's promotional imagery only shows their current core lineup (Alex, Josh, and Parker), implying that they'll be in trio mode here with no guests, but we'll let you know if that's publically contradicted. Of course, Saturday's concert goes down the same night as the Ace Frehley show, so how does timing look? The '80s hair metal invasion begins outside the St. Ignace casino at 6:00 PM on Saturday night, whereas Tarnished take the stage indoors at 9:00 PM (21+, no cover).

With five acts there, it's doubtful that Ace will finish up before Tarnished, so if you want to keep the good times going, just head indoors to The Northern Pines Lounge afterwards! It's a wonder why Tarnished weren't booked as local openers when they play similar music and will already be there. Visit the above links for more details on Tarnished's St. Ignace shows this weekend, and for a preview, we have three videos to share from Tarnished's set during the Fourth of July parade in the Soo two weeks ago! Two were unfortunately uploaded to their Facebook page as "Reels" (pillarboxed, at that), and they include covers of AC/DC's "Highway To Hell" and Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band's "Old Time Rock & Roll" filmed behind their float. Rhythm & Brews bandmates Chris Leask & Ron Suchey guested here on bass and drums, and neither was credited as playing with Tarnished at the parade in advance on social media (Parker played guitar here.)

Possibly owing to space limitations, Alex Traynor (vocals only) and Josh Fair (lead guitar) performed while walking alongside the float, which would be a neat way to experience the set for them and the audience! The other video is a 1:41-long livestream shot by Alex where Tarnished, Chris, and Ron covered AC/DC's "T.N.T.". Alex mostly filmed this in vertical selfie mode, but he did pan around to show parade viewers and some of the Independence Day scenery, and I'm glad the weather held out! The video is choppy with some laggy dropped-out audio, which is unfortunate, but it's the only one of the three that I can embed here, so check it out below, and don't miss Tarnished stationary in St. Ignace this weekend!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for our Rotaryfest Stage 2 preview (and more) on the site next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Bone Yard 225, Generations, Soundcheck, And Tarnished!!)

Before we begin today's post (mostly including SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS), I wanted to briefly acknowledge that today marks the 17th anniversary of the launch of The Sault Metal Scene! Thank you to everyone for your support and readership since 2007, and here's to many more! Now, here's what you should know to lead off this weekend's hard rock concert previews on this Independence Day! Our Project 906, Silent 9, and Tym Morrison previews will be in our next post.

Sault Michigan hard rock/classic metal band Tarnished will return to this year's Fourth Of July parade TONIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this performance was only announced this past Thursday via a "Reel" on their Facebook page. As you may recall, the then-four piece band rocked out on a float live during the parade the last two years, but neither time was this promoted in advance on social media by the band, so we missed both for coverage on the site. We didn't even cover last year's after the fact, which I profusely apologize for, but you can see them in photo #38 of Sara Eisinger's coverage for SooToday's Sault Michigan-centric sister site SooLeader at this link. We won't miss this year, so what should you know this time out? The parade begins TONIGHT at 7:00 PM and will take place between Davitt Street (behind U-Haul) and Magazine Street, moving north along West 14th Street, Ashmun Street, and West Portage Avenue.

Full details on how to attend/register for the parade can be seen at this link, but it is absolutely FREE & ALL AGES. Tarnished (who I assume will be in trio mode) have at least hinted that they'll be playing their new original song "Lightswitch" TONIGHT, perhaps multiple times given the nature of being on a float to a rapidly changing audience. 9&10 News is calling for partly cloudy weather of 59-66° Fahrenheit (18-19° Celsius) TONIGHT, so it should be a comfortable time to see the parade! We'll have much more from Tarnished in an upcoming post, but visit the above links for more details on TONIGHT'S Fourth Of July parade, and here's Tarnished live!

Next up, Sault Ontario southern hard rock trio Bone Yard 225 will return to Reggie's Place for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, this show was only confirmed by Reggie's Facebook page on Tuesday. Uncharacteristically, Bone Yard have not publically confirmed the booking online whatsoever, so I get the impression that this truly is on short notice. This is a one nighter, due to or resulting in online page-less cover rock trio All Over The Map debuting at Reggie's on Saturday night, but according to their website's concert calendar, Greg, Alex, and Warren are playing at a private party on Saturday. It's not common for Reggie's to book the same band on consecutive weekends, but hopefully Bone Yard 225 keep things rocking TOMORROW after their Canada Day weekend action, especially riding the momentum of the release of "FAFO"!

As normal at Reggie's, your local 225 take the stage at 9:30 PM, there's no announced cover charge (any merchandise or "Bone Yard shot" purchases notwithstanding), and you must be 19 or older to attend. Visit the above links for more details, and here's Bone Yard live!

Also new this weekend, local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will return to Jay's Piston Broke Pub for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies again for the short notice, these shows were only confirmed via the venue's Facebook page yesterday, and while the band hasn't publically corroborated the bookings yet, members did acknowledge them on personal Facebook pages. These will be Soundcheck's first shows since Sunday, when they did indeed play at the Cruisin' The Dub car show at the newer A&W on Great Northern Road, despite very minimal public advertising from them or organizers. I profusely apologize for missing that for full coverage, but I did address it here, erring on the side of caution given that I couldn't find public mentions of it in advance. Hopefully the car show went well, and that the next one has better advance publicity on social media!

Intriguingly, Soundcheck will precede TOMORROW & SATURDAY's shows with a one-off return as tonight's jam night hosts, just two weeks removed from their finale as the regular Thursday jam night band. This seems to be more a case of scheduling working out than a reversal of plans, but if you want to jam with Terry, Jim, and Glen one more time anew, keep that in mind! This weekend's shows have 19+ age limits, no cover charges, and 9:30 PM start times. Visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's Soundcheck live last year!

Finally for today's all-late notice preview post, fellow local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations will return to Shooters Downstairs Lounge for one night only THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Once again, apologies for the short notice, singer Valerie Powley only announced this show on their Facebook group on Sunday, where she also confirmed that they will return to the aforementioned Jay's Piston Broke Pub (or "Jay's Broken Piston") on Friday, July 12th and Saturday, July 13th, just two weeks removed from their last shows there! No word yet on if they'll be jam night hosts that week or not. In the lead-up to Rotaryfest, Generations are playing a string of consecutive weekends, which is great for fans, and hopefully SATURDAY's Shooters show provides some solid entertainment for fans and patrons alike! Remember, Shooters hosts DJs on Fridays this year, hence why this is a one nighter.

SATURDAY'S and next weekend's shows all have a 9:30 PM start time, 19+ age limit, and no cover charge. See above for more details, and for a preview, Valerie shared six videos from their Saturday nighters at Jay's on June 29th on their Facebook group! An attendee filmed them covering Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", Melissa Etheridge's "I'm The Only One", two songs with bassist Pierre Anthony on vocals (The Tragically Hip's "Blow At High Dough" and Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing"), one song with guitarist Tony Kajnar on vocals (Tom Petty's "You Wreck Me"), and as embedded below, Alannah Myles' "Love Is". The filmer of these videos got a lot of different views of Generations in action this past Saturday, including with the Melissa Etheridge and Alannah Myles covers featuring active dance floors and the Tom Petty video being filmed beside the stage.

Unfortunately, all six videos are vertical, and this includes the Pat Benatar and Tragically Hip covers, even though those were shot horizontally, meaning they were uploaded sideways.  If you can get past the vertical framing (and how it can accentuate the crowd levels on the floor), everyone sounds good on these covers, and it's good to see an array of songs featuring most of the band singing lead! I know that drummer Tony Santoro has lead vocal parts too, so I'd have completed the quadruple here, but give all six a watch above and below, and don't miss Generations at Shooters on SATURDAY NIGHT!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for the rest of this weekend's concert previews next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tarnished) & Lots Of Recent Updates From Them!!

The news backlog continues to slowly get dealt with, and today, we have a single topic post, courtesy of new updates, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, and missed concert apologies all concerning a specific E.U.P. band!

Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Tarnished announced a pile of new concert dates on their Facebook page, both local and away! The guys have been surprisingly quiet for the last few weeks aside from plugging far-flung dates Gould City and Curtis, but they actually did play a local concert-ish on Monday, as they performed on a float during Sault Ste. Marie's Fourth of July parade! The band did not promote this in advance on their Facebook page, so my profuse apologies for not being able to cover it here (I would have if they had said something!). They did post pictures on Facebook, and Sara Eisinger of local news website SooLeader (a new sister site of SooToday in Sault Ontario) did get this picture of Tarnished rocking out during the parade as part of their coverage of the parade & fireworks on Monday. SooToday actually cross-posted that article, so maybe the Tarnished picture will pique some Canadian interest?

As for the new shows proper, the first one listed is allegedly THIS SUNDAY at Northern Light Cannabis, a new dispensary in Dafter, but the band's own schedule says this show is "TBA", so it doesn't sound like it's 100% set in stone as of that post's publication. If we hear anything about it either way, we'll let you know, but I'll hold it from our concert calendar until it's fully confirmed. Their first publically advertised concert in over a month will be on Saturday, July 16th when they return to Snows Bar & Grill in nearby Cedarville, with further returns slated for Saturday August 6th and Friday, September 2nd! Good to see the guys back at a recently familiar venue, so don't miss out if you're in the area! Expect these three shows to have 8:00 PM start times, no cover charges, and 21+ age limits. Their next show after that is on the road in Curtis (80 minutes west of here) on the 23rd.

Local fans can also see Tarnished back at Huck's Pub & Grill in nearby Rudyard on Saturday, July 30th, marking their first show back at the former Joe's Bar since Thursday, June 30th when Tarnished played at Huck's Thursday bike night series. Again, I profusely apologize for missing that date, Tarnished never plugged that show in advance on Facebook, so unless you follow Huck's on Facebook, you'll have missed online advertising for it outright. Hopefully it was a hit with fans and bikers alike! Their show on July 30th (thankfully with advance notice) will presumably be a 9:00 PM affair, and again, this is a 21+ event with no announced cover charge. Tarnished's next two advertised dates are out of town, in Toledo, Ohio on August 5th and then at the Grand Marais Music & Crafts Festival (almost two hours west of the Soo) on August 13th, but their last six new dates will all be at The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Kewadin Casino branch!

Last seen at The Rapids Lounge in March (unless there was another late notice/never announced online booking there), Tarnished are slated to return for Friday & Saturday night slates on August 19th & 20th, October 14th & 15th, and November 18th & 19th, and note that while Tarnished's own schedule does not list August 20th, Kewadin Casino's entertainment page does (yes, the other new hard rock shows there will be covered soon!). These six shows all have 9:00 PM start times, no cover charges, and 21+ age limits once again. Sounds like a busy summer ahead for Alex, Nathan, Isaac, and Josh, so definitely visit the above links for more on their upcoming dates, locally or otherwise! Before we wrap this post, I did want to briefly acknowledge Tarnished's newest TikTok video postings, and no, they didn't plug the Fourth of July parade or the Huck's show last month on there. Activity on TikTok has slowed, but five videos are new to us, so what can you see?

The new videos include frontman Alex Traynor being the victim of an early April Fool's prank from drummer Josh Fair, Alex getting back at Josh with "The Cranberry Challenge", Alex trying to give bassist Isaac Royer some canned cranberries whether he wants them or not, guitarist Nathan Webber having fun during gear loading for a recent gig, and the guys playing at a Burger King play place (yes, they were allowed in) before a recent concert! I'm unsure if this was filmed at the local Burger King before their Rapids Lounge shows in March or elsewhere, or if there's another Soo date that they didn't plug, but it looks like the guys had fun! I remember enjoying the play places at the McDonalds and Hardee's on the Business Spur as a kid! Definitely give Tarnished's new (and old) TikTok videos a look above, they are amusing, but I can't get the embed code for TikTok videos to work on the SMS (it's not Tarnished's fault).

I think we're reasonably caught up on Tarnished's updates now, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews on the site tomorrow, with more news to follow! Thanks everyone!

Happy (Belated) 4th Anniversary To The Sault Metal Scene!!

Well guys, we're keeping with a fast paced schedule on the SMS now that my computer's back from Staples, and now, finally, we can talk about our 4th anniversary surprises in detail! I was hoping to (obviously) do all of this on Monday, July 4th, which is the day we started the SMS in 2007, but hey, things happen and believe me, I was pissed at the inconvenience of it all. Now that we're back in working order though, I can properly unveil and detail the surprises and announcements in a way that Facebook statuses cannot! So let's kick this off with the biggest news of all for the anniversary! The first news is that we are now selling official Sault Metal Scene t-shirts! This was an idea that I've been deliberating on for some time now (you may have seen the occasional hint or reference to it on our Facebook page), but for the fourth anniversary, I finally decided to pull the trigger! Hopefully I can answer any lingering questions you guys have on the shirts, so hopefully this post will cover them. The shirts are black with our logo in red on the chest, with nothing on the back (Keep it simple unless demand grows.) They are nice quality Gildan's 100% cotton t-shirts, and they come in sizes S-XL. The shirts will be printed on a order-by-order basis by AudioLife through Reverbnation, where we already have a "band page" set up, and as such, we now have a "Sault Metal Store" activated there for you guys to buy the shirts from! A link is also now on the SMS page itself on the bottom left, and our Facebook page has a "Store" tab to allow you to buy shirts through there too. I opted for Reverbnation due to it's ease and integration with our existing pages, and because it doesn't cost me a dime to make merchandise to sell! I handle the designing, and AudioLife/Reverbnation make the shirts from recieved orders and send them out. I had a great offer from RedD Monkey's Steve Mozarowski to make up shirts with him, but I thought that this would be simplest in terms of cost, space, and online access. Still, "some metalhead" recommends you bands give him a shout, his work is great! The shirts cost $12.97 (tax included), which is the absolute lowest I can make them for this style without sacrificing quality. The shipping cost to Sault Ontario is $8.49, but shipping to Sault Michigan is only $6.39, so if you live over there or use Weir's Furniture Store, make note of the $2.10 savings! I could have raised the base price & earned the difference, but I don't want to take your money. I'm not making a penny through this, I just want you guys to spread the word and support the SMS if you wanna by rocking a shirt! At present, you can only buy shirts with major credit cards, though if you give me the total shirt/shipping cost in person, I could order you one and have it sent to your address. When I ordered my SMS shirt, it took 4 weeks to ship, though keep in mind that the postal strike happened in the interim, so it will likely come earlier than that with your orders, especially if you're shipping to Michigan. At present, Reverbnation does not offer PayPal as a payment method, nor do they offer shirts in kids sizes or in sizes above XL, but if those become available, I will absolutely let you guys know! And for the record, I have NO shirts stocked at home, this is by online demand only. At least at present, if you want an SMS t-shirt, you'll have to order it, but trust me, it's worth the order! My shirt is nice quality, it's well screenprinted and it's durable, so as long as you take care of it and follow the washing instructions, it will last! Of course, I don't control the quality of how AudioLife makes the shirts, so click here for details on exchange or refund info if it came to that, though hopefully it won't. If these shirts sell well (time will decide that), I'll consider expanding the store to include other shirt colours, designs, and types, and maybe even hats, mugs, and bags. That all depends on if SMS shirts sell well, and if you'll honestly buy them, so click here if you're interested, and check the above information for more! You follow us, why not wear us and show your support? Second for the fourth anniversary surprises is, obviously, the new design of the SMS page itself. With Blogger's new updated template designing tools and the general aging and busy look of our old layout, I thought it was time to freshen up the look, while keeping it looking similar to before. I won't burden you guys with every change, but here's the major ones. The sidebars with the links, listings, polls, and so forth are now transparent black, which is a cool effect, and gives a seamless flow to the screen area. The banner is now taller to increase the customization possibilities (and make our logo more prominent), while many of the "border lines" are gone from surrounding text and photos, giving everything a cleaner look. Visited links are now blue & links now only highlight in purple, as I felt blue fit better given our Sault Michigan coverage. Link colours also now apply to sidebars too. I freshened up our band links by splitting the Twin Saults' respective band lists in half: One each for active bands, one each for inactive bands (i.e. defunct bands or ones that have not been visibly active in the previous year.) This way, you guys can get a better gauge of who's currently active in the local music scenes on both sides of the border without clutter from defunct & inactive bands, who are grouped separetely below the active ones (though if I made a mistake in my categorizing, let me know!) Also, each post now features buttons at the bottom to share individual posts on external websites like Facebook & Twitter. I've removed the out of town concert listings too because, in all fairness, our local fanbase isn't within easy driving distance for most of the shows, though we'll still mention them! And finally for notable changes, we now have an official mobile version of the SMS page formatted for smartphones, iPod Touches, and so forth! It's not really custom to our layout yet, but I like the formatting for it's ease of reading, though you can switch to a desktop view if you want as well. I hope the changes don't throw you guys off, cause I tried to maintain our old look while bringing it forward in design and style. There's more tweaking to be done though, so I will let you guys know when I change or add anything new! Third for the anniversary surprises is a new monthly feature series! I debated between Twitter and the site we chose for this one, but in the end, we picked the more active and varied of the two on a local metal basis, so our new monthly series is the YouTube Channel Profile Series! There's tons of people, bands, and groups on YouTube that have videos of a local metal interest, from live concert videos to original songs to jam session clips, there's plenty there! On the SMS, we tend to mostly feature new videos, videos from bands playing from concert previews, and so forth. There's a lot of older & unexplored channels & videos that deserve your attention, so starting on July 22nd, we will profile three YouTube channels with either a 50% level (or higher) of local metal-based videos, or a high number of videos in general of a local metal interest. We'l tell you who runs the channel, what to see there, what the overall quality is like, what videos are worth watching, and so on, cause there's a lot of hidden gems! I haven't decided a method to pick the channels yet though, though there will definitely be a form of random selection, and for the record, the SMS channel will NOT be featured. I talk about it enough as it is! So watch out for this new series on July 22nd, and from the 19th-25th of each succeeding month! And finally for surprises, The Sault Metal Scene is now on yet another music site! We have accounts on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, and Reverbnation, but now, we've made the jump to PureVolume! I've been using PureVolume for occasional band sourcing and material for years, and though it's nowhere near as popular locally as other music sites, I thought we should continue our reach by joining PureVolume, which has a nice interface to promote band material and information! Active bands like Frightlight, Tym Morrison, and Sykotyk Rampage all have a presence on PureVolume, while notable defunct bands like Infrastrate and D.O.T.H. all have utilized PureVolume in the past, and in some cases, the only page I have access to for a given band is through here, like with Bad Habbit. It's a nice little site and has a ton of solid bands from all over the world, so definitely consider using it if your band wants to extend themselves further! Our official PureVolume page is kinda bare at present, but definitely visit and make note of it to check our over a dozen local hard rock acts (including a new discovery we're profiling this week), and become a fan or friend today! Stay tuned for more updates from the SMS & PureVolume! That's all for now, but I do want to thank you guys sincerely from the bottom of my heart for all of the incredible support & readership that I and The Sault Metal Scene have been offered over the last four years (and two days.) Whether you read every day or see me as just "some metalhead", I appreciate everything you guys have done and said to help this site prosper beyond my wildest expectations that I had in July 2007. I hope you guys will follow along over the next year as we hopefully make our biggest strides yet in the local scene, as I really hope we can get even bigger going into 2012. Seeing 1,000 Facebook fans would be awesome, but you never know what will be up next! Thank you all for everything, we wouldn't be where we are now without you guys! Stay tuned later today as we continue to get back on track from the weekend delays, as we review Monday night's Titan's Eve concert! Thanks everyone!

A Band Name Change, A Possible New Show, And Lots More News!!

Before we get to today's previously scheduled local metal stories, I wanted to take a second to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Sault Star reporter Frank Dobrovnik, who suddenly passed away just recently while vacationing in Italy with his wife. Frank had been a well respected writer & reporter for The Sault Star since 1998, and regular SMS readers may remember us featuring articles he has written surrounding certain major Essar Centre concerts, along with the Kiss concert campaign and aftermath, although his body of work stretches far beyond just those topics. I never met Frank, but I've been a fan of his writing style & articles for some time now, and this is completely shocking news to hear, especially for his young children and his own young age. Click here to read Frank Rupnik's tribute article from the paper, and local news sites should keep you guys posted on arrangements and donations to the family as they are made public. R.I.P. Frank!

Now, we have some more positive news to share on this rainy Tuesday, including some new songs, a band looking to play here, and kicking things off today, a local death metal band has changed their name! Yesterday afternoon, Bring The Misery officially changed their name to Unleash The Blackened Sky, after just two shows under their old name. With the name change, their Facebook page's link is different too, so we've updated our band links to reflect the change as well. No reason was publically given for the name change, though I imagine it's partly due to Dan Souliere's departure, as the "band merger" style of the old name (Bring The Fallen + State of Misery) doesn't have the same meaning when only one BTF member is left in the current lineup. Plus, the new name is more original, and it sounds very metal, so hopefully it sticks! Curiously though, their page still doesn't mention Daeson Lesage as their new rhythm guitarist, you think that would be updated by now. Stay tuned to the SMS for when we hear about Unleash The Blackened Sky's next shows!

Next up, there's another band looking for a local booking, so here's what you should know! I got an e-mail yesterday from Chris Woodford of the Toronto metal band Titan (not to be confused with Titans Eve), and he's looking for a local booking this summer! The band, who play sort of a mix of sludge and hardcore metal, are hoping to play a local concert on August 5th, between their Toronto & Thunder Bay shows on the surrounding days, and are open to playing anywhere that will book them! Dismembertainment can't do the show due to prior engagements that day, so Chris asked me if I could promote their search on the SMS, and I happily obliged! Titan are inspired by bands like Converge and Neurosis, and they have a nice slow and heavy sound with lots of aggression and intensity to get some moshpits going! It'd be cool to see Titan here on August 5th, so if any of you guys are interested in booking, helping book, or playing with Titan for a show that night, give the band a shout at their MySpace page linked above or at titanslays@gmail.com! Remember, if you wanna see Titan here, consider messaging them, they'd love to play here, someone just needs to extend an olive branch to start the process!

Now to some new updates from new local metal band AlterWhite! The band has uploaded two new demo covers onto their Facebook page (and their brand new YouTube channel), which may seem a bit odd when you think of metal covers. One is a cover of Creed's "My Own Prison" and the other (believe it or not) is of Wham!'s "Careless Whisper"! Now that's unexpected, especially the latter! Both end up sounding similar to their originals, as in they have some musical promise, but are very empty and unrefined, but remember, the band has just two guys at the moment. I find with both songs, the songs are obviously ratcheted up in heaviness, but honestly, Mike Matthews would be better served to actually try and sing the covers, not go into James Hetfield-mode, as it doesn't flow consistently with Kevin McCarthy's riffing. That said, I've never been a fan of George Michael, so I find the "Careless Whisper" cover to be an improvement! I want to hear these songs with another guitarist and a bassist, and maybe some more controlled singing, cause there is something there with AlterWhite that they need to expose musically! Check out the new covers (and more) at the above links, and here's their "Careless Whisper" cover!

And finally, if you've been a reader of the SMS in it's various forms over the years, you may know that July 4th is not just Independence Day, it's also the SMS' anniversary. We're coming up on 4 years since I started The Sault Metal Scene on Monday, and you may have seen a bit of a "countdown" of sorts on our Facebook page lately. That's just to build suspense, as we have 4 "surprise" announcements to make! Two involve the SMS blog/website itself, though what is happening there is up to you to speculate. One involves monthly features (all I'll say is none are being cancelled), and one involves one of our external pages. Yes, I'm keeping things vague for a reason, cause I want you guys to speculate and not know what's up my sleeve! Rest assured, nothing bad is happening, nothing drastic is going to happen in terms of overhauling our goals and aims, and (as I often reiterate), it's not related to me personally booking a concert. These announcements are all good, and in at least one case, I'll be able to provide you guys with something more than just text and media. Let the speculation run wild, and on Monday, you'll know exactly what we're doing to celebrate our 4th anniversary!

That's all for today, but stay tuned TOMORROW as our final monthly feature post of June is unveiled, where we profile Saultite Jeff Nisbet's solo work in our Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile Series! Stay tuned for that, and much more to come! Thanks guys!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Half A Man) & The SMS March Mayhem Semifinals!!

Hey guys, I apologize for this being later than it usually is, but that's the joys of vacation plans. This post shall lead off with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, but then we'll transition into the latest SMS March Mayhem updates, including the debut of the final four! Let's get things going!

Brimley hard rockers Half A Man are playing a rare all ages concert on The Fourth of July! This will serve as both an official outdoor show and as a Fourth of July barbeque to take place at 6816 South Main Street in Brimley. I believe this is likely at or near a band member's house, but don't quote me on that. This event has a 1:00 PM start time, but I imagine the band might not play until later. It is definitely an ALL AGES show, and there is no listed admission price. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Sounds like a fun time, and what better way is there to spend both Independence Day & the SMS' 4th anniversary? Details aren't entirely out there yet for what's going on, but stay tuned to the above links for info as it comes in!

Now it's time to update the SMS March Mayhem bracket as we finish the quarterfinals, narrowing the bands down to a final four! Who made the final four? Here's the results of the third round!

As It Stands def. Destroilet 35-17
Frightlight def. Lion Ride 39-19
Mike Cliffe def. Shit Liver 109-106
Sykotyk Rampage def. WinkStinger 48-22

What do you guys think? As It Stands' victory is what I predicted, though it was a bit more of a blowout than I was predicting. Destroilet had a good run though! Same goes for the Frightlight/Lion Ride match in terms of the finish, as I thought Lion Ride would have at least lost by a closer amount. Mike Cliffe's surprising Cinderella run continues with a stunningly high vote total, narrowingly beating Shit Liver in this past round! Who'd have thought we'd get over 200 votes on a matchup? Sykotyk Rampage's win of WinkStinger is also a surprise, though their fanbase is quite devoted! So these are the quarterfinal winners, and here's the updated tournament bracket!

As you can see, the winners of last week's first two matchups and the winners of the last two matchups will face each other, starting TODAY, in fact! With that said, here are the matchups for the SMS March Mayhem Semifinals!

Can Frightlight continue their gauntlet run in the tournament with a victory over hardcore mainstays As It Stands? And in the battle of surprise semifinalists, can Mike Cliffe pull off yet another upset victory as he takes on Sykotyk Rampage? The winners of these matchups face off in ONE WEEK in the finals, so VOTE TODAY and pick your finalists! That's all for now, but stay tuned for more news very soon! Thanks everyone, and GET VOTING!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison), Weekend Concert Previews, And A Singer Change!!

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates over the past few days, I have been badly bogged down with assignments and homework. I have a big update post coming later tonight detailing some newly discovered local metal/hard rock acts and some new Reverbnation pages, so stay tuned for that later tonight! But for now, we have concerts to preview, and kicking things off are LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS that tie into that, so here we go!

A couple hours ago, it was announced on Facebook that Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will be playing a solo concert THIS SUNDAY at Foggy Notions! But that's not all, as according to the Facebook event page, Tym will be having a solo acoustic show there "every Sunday". With that in mind, the schedule on his official website also lists solo dates for Foggy's on the following weeks, as he'll be back there on November 21st and 28th! Looks like he has an arrangement set up there for weekly concerts for at least three weeks, likely longer, though specifics haven't been stated online. All three of the announced solo dates this month will have 10:00 PM start times and 19+ age limits, and there is no announced cover charge for any of the shows. Nice to see Tym's solo show return at this volume, and Foggy's works as a consistent venue for it, no matter how long "every Sunday" lasts! Sorry for the short notice too, this was only announced late yesterday. Check the above links for more details, and make sure to hear his solo originals at his official website linked above!

Now to the shows we previously knew about for our weekend previews, and we'll start at The Roosevelt Hotel, as they slowly continue their march towards a more diverse musical atmosphere. And what better way to help with that than a night full of metal mayhem? Four metal bands are ready to melt faces at The Rosie TONIGHT, so here's who to expect! Your headliners are Montreal Christian metalcore quintet Breaking The Fourth Wall, who are definitely playing here after seeing a planned July date get canned earlier in the year. With an energetic experimental hardcore sound in tow, expect a great headlining set from these guys in their local return! As well, three local openers will unleash their musical attacks tonight as well! Hardcore rockers As It Stands return to the stage tonight for the first time in two months, with their newest originals and a hard hitting moshable sound ready to go! Also, WinkStinger return to the stage fresh off of their Coch's Corner Halloween party set, as they continue to build their name as one of the best extreme metal bands in the area! And finally, it's the long awaited return of local death metal band Bring The Fallen, in their first show since May, and their first live public concert with bassist Nolan Rainville since February! Great to see them back and fully together, and they should deliver a brutal set themselves! Click on the above links to check out all of the scheduled bands!

There is NO COVER for this concert, it all starts at 10:00 PM tonight, and you must be 19 to enter. Sure, The Rosie's a bit far from the downtown core, and you may have a pre-existing view of it, but Chad LaRoue and everyone else there have been doing a lot to make it a better and more wide-appealing bar. If tonight's show is a success, more metal could be on it's way to The Rosie, so definitely consider going tonight! I don't know if I can make it (thank you, university assignments), but PLEASE go to this if you can! For more details, visit the Facebook event page or visit the above links! For a video preview, check out this live clip of Breaking The Fourth Wall playing their song "Murder of Crows" from a 2009 show in Hamilton!

Meanwhile, tomorrow night, it's the long awaited return of Garden of Bedlam, in their first live concert appearance since backing up Kiss in August! This time, they will return to the site of their Kiss afterparty, The Rockstar Bar, in their first ever concert set there! Garden of Bedlam are the only scheduled band tomorrow night, and will break out a setlist full of originals from their debut EP and their forthcoming full length album, along with selected covers! Expect a start time of around 11:00 PM, with a $5 cover charge, and you must be 19 to enter. It's great to see Garden of Bedlam back, and I'm fairly certain I'll be there for their return to the stage! And of course, there will be a review with video and photos on Saturday, as usual! Seems to be a no frills concert, just in your face heavy metal, and who doesn't love that? For more details, visit the official Facebook event page and check out the above links! And for a video preview, here's Garden of Bedlam from this year's Rotaryfest playing their original song "New Rain"!

And finally for known hard rock concerts this weekend, local classic hard rock cover band Turner Up return to the stage after a weekend off to rock The Nicolet Tavern! Though an event page has not been posted on Facebook to hype either of their shows this weekend (tomorrow and Saturday night), they will be there this weekend, but things will look very different. It was confirmed on drummer Scott McClurg's personal Facebook page yesterday that the band had parted ways with singer Brent Royer, who left to pursue other options. Brent had replaced Todd Killam as the band's frontman in July, and sang with them over the next four months. Shame to see Brent leave, as he's a very good singer, but hey, hopefully he's doing what's right for him! Scott also announced that a new singer has been secured, and it is Krista Marshall, who sang in the inactive local cover band Johnny Lunchbox with Turner Up bassist Jeff Gray. This is an interesting move, and while it gives the band a more than capable frontwoman with experience in this type of band, I wonder how "hard rock" they'll be going forward? I guess we won't know until we hear them! If you want a taste of Krista's work with Jeff in Johnny Lunchbox, click here to see some good quality videos, but the songs aren't all that heavy.

So this weekend marks Turner Up's debut with Krista Marshall on vocals, and they'll be on at The Nicolet Tavern at 10:00 PM tomorrow and Saturday night! There is no announced cover charge, and you must be 19 to enter. My sources for their shows this weekend are their Facebook group and the marquee board at the Nicolet. Hopefully these shows go well, and best of luck to Krista with the new band, I know she'll do great! For more, check out the above links, and if I hear anything coming out of these shows, I'll have them here!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for a huge post including three newly discovered local metal/hard rock acts later today! Thanks everyone, and go see some shows this weekend!
