To allow tomorrow's focus to lie solely on weekend concert previews, this month's YouTube Channel Profile is going up a day early on the site! This monthly feature post looks at 1-3 randomly selected YouTube channels (3 this month) with at least half of their content focusing on local metal, hard rock, or punk artists/concerts, in order to spotlight them for current readers and encourage fans to check them out and subscribe for more! As the first channel we picked only had one video (as did the second), we're tripling up this month, and this is a very punk-centric installment as it turned out, so here's what you should know for this month's YouTube Channel Profiles!

Channel Summary: The only upload on Carly's channel comes from the Hedley concert at The Yard on July 1st, 2016, though the 10+ minute video does not feature any performed songs by the Abbotsford B.C. pop punk band. Instead, the video is of frontman Jacob Hoggard borrowing a fan's phone to call her mother, in response to noticing fans texting mid-show. This extended break definitely amused attending fans, and could also serve as word of warning if you plan on texting at a concert! No visible activity on this channel has followed this video's posting, but you can see another take of this segment from a different attendee at this link, and more from this concert on other channels.

Channel Summary: Though active in The Business Suit Trappers concurrently with this channel's active period, Guy only posted one video there before his sudden passing in December 2016, and it was of his old punk band The Hangdowns' original song "No Man Is An Island". Presumably also featuring Jordan Cumming and Marc Muto on guitar and drums (though no performer credits are given), this song is a solid punk number with more of an aggressive skate-punk vibe than many of Guy's later bands, and it's well worth checking out! Note that more videos and songs of The Hangdowns can be found elsewhere on YouTube and social media.

Channel Timeline: Launched on March 13th, 2006; Only video posted on August 17th of that year

Channel Summary: This channel's only video features local/Toronto indie/punk quartet Treble Charger's song "Brand New Low" (from their 2000 CD "Wide Awake Bored"), as set to footage from the 1990s Sci-Fi Network series Farscape, though excellentand admitted that he didn't make this video himself. I don't find the visuals match the song at all, but fans of that series may feel differently. "Brand New Low" is an entertaining song with a catchy chorus that fans of their 2000s punk era will definitely take to, whether or not you played NHL 2002, though there are more substantial channels for Treble Charger media from this and other albums.

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (SNFU & Debutaunt), The Astral Gunk Concert Preview, And A New Video!!

Here's another news post for your Tuesday morning, and of course, I hope that our American readers had a great Fourth of July! Today, we have one more video from a major recent major concert, a special mid-week concert preview, and leading off, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for you punk fans, so here's what you should know!

Edmonton pop punk quartet Debutaunt will make their local concert debut on Tuesday, August 9th when they headline at The New American Pub! Hitting the "road to nowhere" on their Canadian tour next month, Debutaunt are touring in support of their new EP, and have a fun alternative punk sound that calls to mind a number of big punk acts, so they should attract a solid response next month at The New A! There will be at least one local opening band, identity to be established, and we will let you know when there is a public announcement on the local band(s). Promoted by Six, Two, Oh. in their latest New A event, this 19+ concert will start at 9:00 PM, and the Facebook event page curiously lists both a $5 cover charge and a "pay what you can" model of entry, so we'll clarify that on here if promoters specify their intended payment method(s). Punk fans should circle August 9th on their calendars for Debutaunt's local debut, so stay tuned for updates!

Next up, here's another major show for punk (and hardcore) fans on Thursday, September 1st, as Vancouver hardcore punk legends SNFU will return to The Rockstar Bar for what should be another huge headlining show! Last seen almost a year ago during promoter J.D. Pearce's Gonqshow concert series, Mr. Chi Pig and company are no strangers to the area, always attracting a lively crowd for their classic songs, and things should be no different to kick off September! Like last year, J.D.'s punk/metal quintet Jack Spades will be on the opening lineup (fittingly so, given that they cover "Drunk on a Bike" frequently), while there will be at least one additional local band to be announced. For reference sake, last year's SNFU show was opened by Destroilet (who haven't played live since the fall), while the dormant Bad Back were once scheduled too before quietly dropping out. This 19+ show is being held at 9:00 PM (the 3:00 PM start time on the Facebook event page is obviously incorrect.)

As for admission, this is another show that's so big, it warrants online advance ticket sales, and they are $20 a piece at this link starting at 10:00 AM today! There is apparently a limit of 100 advance tickets, and I can't confirm if admission at the door will be raised at all, let alone possible given the advance ticket sales. It's great to see SNFU back in the Soo, and much quicker than the previous six year delay prior to last year's show, so check the above links for full current details on this concert!

Also today, here's a special Wednesday night concert preview, as Sackville, New Brunswick "punk gnar-wave garage psych" quartet Astral Gunk will rock The Gore Street Cafe in their local concert debut TOMORROW NIGHT! Punk fans should be interested in checking out Astral Gunk's blend of old school punk and retro styles that even add some new wave and techno to their sound, and they should deliver tomorrow at the laundromat! Venue co-owner Sam Decter's new experimental/rap duo The Leash Kids were originally advertised to open the show, but they have quietly been removed from the lineup for unannounced reasons (maybe Mikey's unavailable?) In any event, the Facebook event page lists a band to be announced as the openers, and if they are confirmed, we will let you know! Could it be one of Sam's numerous recent one-off bands? This ALL AGES event will have a "pay what you can" model for admission, and assuming there is an opener, will start at 7:00 PM. Check the above links for more details, and here's Astral Gunk live!



We'll close today with (at least) one more video from the Hedley concert at The Yard from Tuesday night! Uploaded by attendee Chris Paci on Sunday to his YouTube channel, this came well after the bulk of his Hedley concert videos were posted, hence why we didn't acknowledge it during that morning's SMS post. This is of the Abbotsford, B.C. pop punk quartet playing their song "Anything" (which I believe closed their set), complete with introductions of the band's members, and it's a good & lively video to cap off Chris' videos from this massive concert, so give it a look below, and see more of Chris' videos above!

Hedley Concert Fallout, Videos, And The Results Of Texting There!!

Before we begin today's post, I wanted to apologize for a missed concert, as local classic/hard rock cover quartet Mourning Wood played at The Rednecks Saloon last night. The band never plugged the show publically, with members only confirming it on personal Facebook accounts last night, which I didn't notice until it was too late. Though it was a one nighter, the show did follow a Friday gig at Rednecks where Terry, Paul, and Steven backed up local country singer Mark Tarantini in a rare local appearance, which wasn't advertised under the Mourning Wood name. Apologies for missing last night's show, we'd have plugged it had we known about it!

Now, today's post is largely devoted to fallout from Friday night's Hedley concert at The Yard, so let's get things rolling! As you may remember, the Abbotsford, B.C. power pop/punk quartet returned to the Soo for the first time in over five years for the first half of The Yard's Canada Day Kicker, with an estimated crowd of 2,000 people taking in Hedley's well received set! SooToday's Donna Hopper was on hand to photograph the show, and while the review proper isn't too long, she did note an amusing incident where frontman Jacob Hoggard borrowed a fan's phone to call her mother, in response to fans texting during the show. Keeping it light, good work! Donna got 39 colour photos from the outdoor show that you can check out as well at this link, all of excellent quality as usual, which include 18 of Hedley, 10 of local openers Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide, 9 of Toronto indie rockers The Beaches, and two of attending fans.

No word on a potential SooToday video of/from the show, but for YouTube videos from Friday night, the best we've seen for quantity come from Chris Paci, who's back with more great local concert videos (stay tuned for some recent Oddfellows footage that he shot too!) Chris uploaded seven videos from Hedley's set to his YouTube channel, including their songs "Hello", "For The Nights I Can't Remember", "Perfect", "Lose Control", "Trip", "Kiss You Inside Out", "Crazy For You", and as embedded below, their set-opener "Hello". These videos lean heavily to Hedley's more recent material and/or ballads, so fans of their early punk songs may be disappointed, but Chris got some solid footage as usual, and while fans can get in the road, you get a good view of the band in action! Before we close with one last video from Chris, here's all of the currently known footage of the texting incident & Jacob's call to the girls' mother! As of this writing, at least three people have filmed this and posted it to YouTube, with the longest and most substantial being from YouTube user C Auffrey, who got arguably the best and longest video of the texting incident and subsequent usage of the phone, which Jacob milked for all that it was worth, much to fans' amusement! No songs were filmed here, but it's an amusing 10 minute watch to see just what happens when you're caught texting at a Hedley show! The other currently known footage from this was filmed by attendees Sam Mick (link here) and Alexis Alberta (link here), but I won't physically embed them on the SMS, as C Auffrey's covers all ground, and it's not like a song where different angles & qualities could have a big impact. Finally, here's Chris Paci's video of local openers Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide! As far as I can tell, he didn't film The Beaches. Chris filmed The Tide playing their single "A Day Will Come", and with the benefit of extra daylight and less fans, his camera work is even better to capture the first local show of the year from these Celtic punk favourites, who sound as good as ever! And yes, drummer Mikey Hawdon was back behind the kit for The Rising Tide on Friday, marking his long awaited return to the live stage with The Tide (remember that Mikey lives in and fronts multiple bands in Toronto, so The Tide have enlisted Cooper Hannahson, Clint Wilson, and Chris Johns as drummers for recent gigs.) It's great to see Mikey back home for this huge concert, and hopefully The Tide have more big stuff in store this year, so check out their video from Friday night below!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (FireHouse, Havadder, and Tym Morrison), And Canada Day Concert Previews!!

For our last post of the month of June 2016, we're tackling concert previews for this Canada Day weekend largely, including SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, but we also have additional shows for later this month from one act playing this weekend, and enough details on a big August show to call it for our listings, so here's what you should know!

With a new month drawing near, we'll add Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison's July slate of acoustic solo concerts at Gliss Steak & Seafood to our concert listings, starting with shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY! Apologies for the short notice on this weekend's gigs, we were waiting for public confirmation of the July dates in his ongoing weekly arrangement with Gliss, which came via this weekend's Facebook event page. As usual when approaching this long-term run of shows, we've added Tym's presumed remaining July shows as well, so look for him at The Quality Inn's house restaurant as well on July 10th & 11th, 17th & 18th, and 24th & 25th for three more full weekends of unplugged classics! You can check out Tym's solo matinee concerts each Friday & Saturday this month (including TOMORROW & THIS SATURDAY) at 6:00 PM each, with no announced age limits or cover charges. Next up, local classic/hard rock cover trio Havadder will return to The Rockstar Bar for one night only THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced the show via the official Facebook event page yesterday. Seen less frequently this year than we have in the past, this will be Jason, Travis, and Scott's first concert in about a month, and just their fourth of the year, all at The Rockstar Bar. Of course we've seen 2/3rds of Havadder recently with The 3 Day Millionaires, but if you miss Havadder's blend of classic and hard rock covers, be at The Rockstar Bar THIS SATURDAY! Note that this is a one nighter due to a previously announced Canada Day concert tomorrow by country rock cover band The Ride (formerly The Border City Band), whose current lineup notably features ex-Havadder drummer T.J. Case. Admission for SATURDAY is likely free, there is a 10:30 PM start time in effect, and you must be 19 to attend. See above for more details, and here's Havadder live!



Before we round out this weekend's previews, here's one more new concert announcement, as we now have fuller details regarding Superior Entertainment's previously announced FireHouse concert on Saturday, August 6th in Sault Michigan, so where is it being held? Outdoors, behind Moloney's Alley, the Irish pub at 227 West Portage Avenue, which is just seconds down the road from The Satisfied Frog. Moloney's Alley isn't a frequent sight for hard rock concerts in the area, but it's great of them to host this huge outdoor show! In the event of rain, promoters will apparently "work with Kewadin (Casino) as a back up venue", even though The Dreammaker's Theater has a British Legends tribute show that night, but details would be fleshed out if need be. As for the lineup, North Carolina glam metal veterans FireHouse will of course headline in their third local concert appearance, while Saginaw rap rock band Redburn and Rochester, New York post-hardcore band Lights Out Paris will also return to the Soo as featured acts.

The show will apparently be an all-day event starting at 12:00 PM and ending at 8:00 PM, and "many more acts" are to be announced, so we'll let you know when they're confirmed! This Downtown Days event (which isn't being advertised as a sequel to last summer's Superior Festival) will be ALL AGES, and tickets are now available online at this link for $25, while children 14 and under can get in for $15, and babies 2 years and under will get free admission, though I can't confirm if you can get tickets at Moloney's Alley or not. It's great to see a huge summer concert event in Sault Michigan, in what has otherwise been a quiet stretch, so see above, click here, and stay tuned for continued details on this huge show!

Finally for today's previews, here's the biggest show of the Canada Day weekend in Sault Ontario, as Abbotsford, B.C. power pop/punk quartet Hedley will headline at The Yard at 75 Huron Street for a huge outdoor show TOMORROW NIGHT in the first half of the venue's Canada Day Kicker! This will be Hedley's first local concert appearance since headlining at The Essar Center in the fall of 2010, and with hits like "She's So Sorry", "Crazy For You", and "On My Own" in their repertoire, the Juno Award winners' diverse and fan friendly hits should attract a huge audience tomorrow! All-female Toronto indie rock quartet The Beaches are joining them on tour as openers with their poppy and skilled originals, while local/Toronto Celtic punk quartet Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide will play their first local concert of 2016 to kick things off, and it'll be great to see them back on a local stage! For what it's worth, Dustin's personal Facebook posts for the show have tagged Mikey Hawdon in them, who is the band's most recent permanent drummer, but hasn't played with the band in their recent shows.

Nothing has been publically confirmed otherwise regarding who'll be behind the kit tomorrow, but be there to find out! Notably the first concert of any kind since The Tech bought The Yard from the Mill Square developers, this half of the Canada Day Kicker will be complimented by Saturday's Kira Isabella show, which should be entertaining for country & pop fans! This ALL AGES event has gates opening at 6:00 PM, with tickets going for $59.89, plus extra VIP & dual show passes from $82,49 & up, so click here to get yours online! Hedley are a huge attraction for pop and punk fans, and this should be a big hit, so see above for more details, and here they are live in the Soo!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Hedley, Hells Bells, Detroit Rock City, And Lost Love!!)

Before I head off to TONIGHT'S Gorod-headlined concert at The Oddfellows Hall, here's a stacked post devoted to LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS from next month through July! We're half looking at touring tribute bands, and half looking at pop punk concerts, with the last two notable big in scope, so here's what you should know!

Barrie-based AC/DC tribute band Hells Bells will return to Sault Ontario for a headlining concert on Saturday, May 14th at The Rockstar Bar! After a successful local return back in November at the same venue, this talented tribute to the Australian hard rock legends will surely be another entertaining blast of high voltage rock n' roll, so definitely keep this one in mind for next month! For tribute band fans, this show also joins the previously announced Bon Jovi Forever tribute concert on May 6th at The Rockstar Bar, whose Facebook event page also went up earlier this week. $12 tickets are now on sale at The Algonquin Hotel's front desk (it's not clear if they'll increase at the door), you must be 19 or older to attend, and there's an early 8:00 PM start time in effect. This should be a great concert for AC/DC fans, especially given Hells Bells' faithful sound and crowd-pleasing live show, so for more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and stay tuned for updates!

Next up, another new concert is now scheduled for that same weekend, just one day after the Hells Bells show, as Montreal alternative/punk quartet Lost Love will make their local concert debut at The New American Pub on Sunday, May 15th! An intriguing mix of pop punk with raspy, attitude-inflected vocals, Lost Love should find a solid audience for this New A show next month, so don't miss out if you want to see some pop/alt-punk in the Soo! Only one local support band is advertised, they being pop punk quintet Northwest, who will end a 9 month concert hiatus next month for their first show of the year. No word on where Northwest have been lately, but it's great to see them back at it! Promoted by Six, Two, Oh. in a slight deviation from their norm, this 19+ concert has a $5 cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time. In a brief detour to Sault Michigan, Detroit-based Kiss tribute band Detroit Rock City will make their own local debut when they rock The Soo Theater at 534 Ashmun Street on Saturday, June 11th! It's been a very long time since we've mentioned a concert at The Soo Theater on here, but the venue (in association with local bar Moloney's Alley) are hosting the Raise The Roof Summer Concert Series from next week through August that will see 5 out of town bands come north for concerts at the theater. All proceeds from the series will go towards reviving The Soo Theater and making it a year-round concerts/events venue, which is a great idea for historical and entertainment reasons alike, so hopefully each show has a huge turnout! Detroit Rock City are the only hard rock-leaning band on the schedule, but their authentic looking and sounding tribute to Kiss should electrify fans in Sault Michigan in two months time, so don't miss them! Admission for this and all other Raise The Roof shows is $15 and you can buy them in advance at this link or at the door. Sadly, all are 21+, but all start at 7:00 PM.

VIP ticket passes for all of the series' shows are also available for $65 (a total $20 savings), while donations are also being accepted online. For reference, the other Raise the Roof shows include Wisconsin blues quartet The Organgrinders next weekend, Ann Arbor bluegrass quintet Dragon Wagon on June 17th & 18th, Traverse City indie rock trio The Accidentals on July 22nd & 23rd, and fellow Traverse City folk musician Billy Strings on August 5th. With The Soo Theater's future as a year-round events venue hanging in the balance, hopefully this summer concert series is a huge success, so see the above links for more details on it and Detroit Rock City!

Finally, we'll return to Sault Ontario for a huge summer concert on Abbotsford, B.C. power pop/punk quartet Hedley will make their long awaited return to our area when they rock The Yard at 75 Huron Street on Friday, July 1st during the downtown outdoor venue's Canada Day Kicker! Last seen here at The Essar Center in November 2010, the Jacob Hoggard-led band has attained a lot of domestic success in recent years with hits like "On My Own", "Crazy For You", and "Everything", and while the Juno Award winners' newer material has drifted from punk, Hedley should get a huge turnout on Canada Day! Support will come via all-female Toronto indie rock quartet The Beaches (a very talented band in their genre) and local/Toronto punk/Celtic quartet Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide in their first local concert date of the year! No word yet on who will be drumming for them in July, but it's great to see Dustin & the Jaaskelainens back on a local stage, let alone at a concert this big, so don't miss out on The Tide's return with Hedley and The Beaches!

Notably the first concert of any genre at The Yard since The Tech (the former St. Mary's College) bought it from Mill Square, the Canada Day Kicker will be rounded out by a show from Barrie country musician Kira Isabella on July 2nd, so keep that in mind also! A "Play in the Yard" suite of attractions, food, and family events for the occasion will also be on site that weekend. Tickets go on sale TODAY for $48 for both shows, with $89 passes for both shows, and $132 for VIP admission for both. These are ALL AGES events with gates opening at 6:00 PM. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Fuck The Facts & The Man And His Machine), Plus More Recent Updates!!

Here's a new news post for your Saturday morning, including some assorted recent updates, overdue drummer notes from a June concert, and leading off, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for death and grind fans in the coming months, so here's what you should know, and Happy Fourth of July!

After a few months off from public local concerts, Heavy North Entertainment are back with some new public shows to announce, including a public house party concert on Friday, July 27th (two weeks from today) featuring Saskatchewan "gutter thrash" quartet The Man & His Machine in their local debut! TMHM have a gritty, distorted, but undeniably heavy and intense sound, and fans should get some solid pits going for them in two weeks, so definitely check them out! They're slotted in the 10:00 PM slot (a closing 11:00 PM act is to be announced), with a Blood Shed Productions-heavy local opener roster including goregrind duo Rotopsy at 9:00 PM, thrash/grind trio Them at 8:00 PM, death metal duo Brutally Fatal at 7:30 PM, and a three-way split rap set by local rappers Phat Boii, Miracle Man, and Killah Kai (who featured in at least one private Blood Shed event this year, but is new to our coverage) at 6:50 PM. To be held at a residence at 124 Anna Street (which also held April's Shit Liver house show), this ALL AGES event will have admission by donation, with a $2 minimum.

Note as well that the official poster lists grind solo project Crucify The Whore as also playing, which isn't out of the realm of possibility, as Tyler is in two bands playing that night, but the lineup is subject to change. Sounds like a fun time, especially if you've missed the recent H.N.E. and Blood Shed private gigs, so keep this was in mind in two weeks, and visit the official Facebook event page for more details!

Next up, Heavy North Entertainment aren't done yet, as they'll return to The Oddfellows Hall for the first time in six months when they bring Ottawa grindcore veterans Fuck The Facts back to Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday, September 20th! Touring North America in support of their new CD "Desire Will Rot", this Juno nominated quintet will be making their first local concert appearance since rocking The Oddfellows Hall last May, and they're definitely no strangers to the Soo, with plenty of explosive death metal originals in store once again in September in the 10:00 PM headlining slot! A shorter than usual lineup for a H.N.E. show will only see four local opening bands, including local death metal favourites The Bear Hunters at 9:00 PM, doom metal trio AlgomA (in their first announced local show since their recent tour) at 8:00 PM, a band to be announced at 7:00 PM (though there's currently a fan push to get Rotopsy in that slot), and Crucify The Whore opening at 6:30 PM. Admission will be $10 at the door for this ALL AGES concert, with advance ticket details to be announced.

All of the above show announcements join some extra teases via Heavy North Entertainment's Facebook page, including another concert on August 20th and the return of "a new young local favourite", so we'll of course let you know when all of that is revealed. It's great to see Heavy North Entertainment back in the swing of things, and that they haven't completely ended use of The Oddfellows Hall as a concert venue after some uncertain months, so don't miss the return of Fuck The Facts early this fall, and stay tuned as more comes in!

Also today, here's some drummer notes from last month's Rockstar Bar Summer Bash, including the long awaited reveal of local classic metal quartet Project 421's new drummer, as they've enlisted Giwakwa's Chris Thompson to replace fellow Fitswitch alum Larry Mousseau in the band. Like they've done in the past, the reveal was made at the show, and online Facebook confirmation has since followed. Chris is a solid drummer with notable bands like Giwakwa, Frightlight, and Half Past, and he should fit in well with Project 421 going forward! The other drummer note is a temporary replacement, as local hard rock quartet Long Shot were joined by Gnaeus' Brendan Garlick last month in place of Jeremy Ganuelas, who was apparently on vacation in Europe last month, as per personal Facebook postings from himself and frontman Evan Dawe at the time.

Nice of Brendan to step in for the Summer Bash, and note that this gave us a union of sorts of the top 2 bands from the Speak Easy Battle! No word on if Brendan will join Long Shot for any other shows before Jeremy comes back home, but we'll keep you posted, and hopefully the concert was a hit!

Finally for now, here's three assorted shorter stories from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• Sudbury death metal trio Fractal Generator are unable to make the Vesperia-headlined Algonquin Pub concert on July 23rd, as per the new official Facebook event page (created by Bear Hunters guitarist Mitch Sirie, who apparently has taken over primary promotion duties from J.D. Pearce, though it's still on the Gonqshow event page.) No word on why Fractal Generator are out, but hopefully Mark can bring one of his bands back here soon! Mitch indicated that they might be replaced on the lineup, and we'll let you know if they are!
• Following the success of their recent High Valley-headlined country show, The Machine Shop at Mill Square asked for thoughts on possibly bringing British Columbia pop punk band Hedley there for a future concert, as per their Facebook page on Wednesday. There's already a ton of positive interest, but if you want to voice up on this potential show, see the above links!
• Local hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven have released their new single "Enough" on iTunes! You can buy it there for 99 cents, though no word yet on if this will lead to full album plans. Nice to see though, so give it a download above!
