Defunct Local Band Profile Series: The Joe Falco Experience & Kidshit

Hey guys, it's now time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles, albeit a day late, which I do apologize for! However, I will note that one of the acts profiled this month does not have an embedded video despite having public material, but blame that on me, as my usual program for ripping MySpace audio is not working (my computer's depleted RAM can't handle it), but when possible, a video will be added! Now, this series looks at 1 or 2 randomly selected local metal, hard rock, or punk bands that are now defunct or inactive, in order to spotlight them for readers and fans, and we have a double whammy of Sault Ontario acts today, so read on below for what you should know!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Joe Falco Experience

Genre: Acoustic Rock/Metal

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Members:

Joe Falco (No Arrow, Faithless Sin), vocals/guitar

Info/Analysis: Active from late 2006 until maybe as late as 2009, The Joe Falco Experience was the solo project of local musician Joe Falco, best known as No Arrow's drummer but also from various guitar roles in other bands. Joe posted 3 acoustic original songs on his MySpace page, along with a song from his then-metal band Faithless Sin, while he had once planned to record a solo CD in the late 2000s that I don't believe was ever completed. Influenced by a wide array of artists (like Zakk Wylde, B.B. King, and Neil Young), his songs varied in tone from the softer "Teary Blue Eyes" to the grungy "Addicted To Lysterine", while he visited a bluesy sound on "It's Kinda Funny". Joe's songs are well performed, if minimalistic given the acoustic setting, while his singing voice has a grit to it and fits how he plays the songs! I don't know if Joe will ever revisit his experience, but check out his solo work above, and a video is coming!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kidshit

Genre: Crust Punk/Thrash

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie/Peterborough, Ontario (formerly also in Edmonton, Alberta)

Members: (The information on members' instrumental roles may be off. Let me know if you can correct anything!)

Mark Rand (Cross Dog, Lion Ride, Fuller), vocals/bass
Jamie Vincent (AlgomA, Bad Back, Fuller), guitar/drums

Info/Analysis: Kidshit were a studio-only hardcore punk project launched by former Fuller bandmates Mark Rand & Jamie Vincent in early 2012. Started while Jamie was still based out of Edmonton (he moved back to the Soo that summer), Kidshit's activity was largely only focused around a free demo released through their Bandcamp page that April featuring 6 songs, all but one running for less than 2 minutes. With Mark & Jamie living in separate cities, the band has largely remained dormant from new activity since, despite optimistic hopes for a live version of the band, but fans of their heavier band work should be at home with Kidshit's sound! Sonically most similar to Mark's old band Detroit and his old solo project (and far heavier than Fuller ever were), Kidshit's furious crossover sound and Mark's aggressive vocals served them well on tracks like "Vicarious Trauma" and "Repent", but give "Expectations" a listen below, and hear more above & at this link!

I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles! So, what's coming in March for this series? Through 100% random selection, we've selected defunct Sault Ontario metal solo project No Shadows Cast (featuring Garage Inc. alum Brian Lester) to at least lead off our March 10th profile, but if there isn't a lot of surviving info on them, we'll round it out with a Sault Michigan profile courtesy of the randomly selected Guitar Studio products 7/47, and if N.S.C. have enough material, 7/47 will lead off a double profile in April, so either way, we're covered!  Look out for our next defunct profile next month, and stay tuned for more news this week! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Glitch), The Return Of Brutaly Fatal, And Much More!!

Keeping the news rolling on this Sunday morning, we have a lot of updates today, including some notifications of local band inactivity, major lineup adjustments for an upcoming all ages show, the return of a local death metal project, and first, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so here's what you need to know!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Glitch will make a rare stop outside of The Rockstar Bar for a show on Friday, March 21st at The Harp Bar & Grill! Announced by guitarist Marco Pedalino on their Facebook group last week, this will be their first announced concert in over two months after taking February off, and just their second date at a location other than The Algonquin Hotel, but like their Toystock appearance in December, they're returning central for this show at the Food Basics plaza on Pine Street! I will note that this date conflicts with the usual Friday scheduling for fellow hard rock artist Tym Morrison's solo arrangement/hosted jam nights, but while possible March dates of his aren't out yet, he did bump two Harp dates last month to Saturdays, so the same could recur. Also, Glitch might be the first hard rock band to play at this venue in a non-unplugged setting since Garden of Bedlam headlined at the then-Madison's Pub in 2009, but if I hear differently, I'll let you guys know!

This 19+ show has a 10:00 PM start time, and there are no announced cover charges. For more details, check the above links! This could be interesting for more than just Glitch's entertaining experienced covers, as if it's successful, maybe The Harp will begin hosting more non-acoustic performers in the coming months? It remains to be seen, but keep Glitch's Harp debut in mind for the 21st, and stay tuned for updates!

Next up, local goregrind/death metal project Brutaly Fatal is back... wait a minute, didn't they become Re-Born to go along with their move to a grunge/punk sound? Yes, but due to popular demand, singer/bassist Austin McCrae has resurrected Brutaly Fatal less than a month after the original version became Re-Born! Though the Re-Born Facebook page remains online, it hasn't been updated since February 7th, so it remains to be seen whether the two bands will operate independently (a'la Full Circle and the second Turner Up) or if Re-Born were "re-re-born". Also unknown is whether drummer Tyler "Ringsnaps" Gibson is back in the new Brutaly Fatal (for what it's worth, he's not acknowledged on the new version's Facebook page yet.) If anything comes out to clarify the status of Re-Born, I'll let you guys know! Austin has been writing new material for the new/old band, and is planning to record and upload some in the near future, while Brutaly Fatal have replaced Re-Born on the upcoming Dank Fest all ages show next month.

That makes sense, as Brutaly Fatal are a better fit stylistically (their timeslot also changed, which we'll elaborate on next.) This is surprising news, but hopefully the fans were right to get Brutaly Fatal back, and I'm curious to hear what's next, so stay tuned for updates, and they're now back in our active band links! (Also, seeing as this is the second incarnation, why not finally add the second L in "Brutally" to mark that?)

Third today, the lineup for the 14-band Dank Fest 2014 concert at The Oddfellows Hall on April 19th has had a major overhaul as per promoter Tyler St. Amour on the Facebook event page on Wednesday, with only 1 of the 14 bands (Rotopsy at 2:30 PM) retaining their original slot! Reasons for the mass changes were not publically announced, but Tyler warned us they were coming, and scheduling conflicts had to play in somehow. In descending order, the show will now be closed by local thrashers Pillory at 1:00 AM, with classic metal quintet Project 421 preceding them at 12:15 AM, solo goregrind project Crucify The Whore at 11:30 PM, and hardcore duo Bad Back now at 10:45 PM, all of which were bumped up in the order (in Project 421's case, by 5 hours!) The out of town headliners (North Bay's Thekillingfield & Buried Out Back) are now earlier at 9:45 PM & 8:45 PM respectively, while sludge trio AlgomA's set is now later at 8:00 PM. The next 4 bands were all put earlier in the order, those being funk metallers The Strange Coyotes at 7:15 PM, Orillia metal trio Like Animals at 6:30 PM, new alt-punk trio The Pixo Control at 5:45 PM, and Stillbroke successors Viva Emptiness at 5:00 PM.

Hard rockers The Danger Cats have moved up a timeslot to 4:15 PM, with the aforementioned Brutaly Fatal replacing Re-Born in the earlier 3:30 PM slot, and Rotopsy are still opening at 2:30 PM. Sweeping changes for sure, but aside from the North Bay bands, Project 421, and AlgomA, no one moved more than 2 timeslots, so the general timeframe for most bands is still in effect. I assume the out of town bands are earlier due to having to get back on the road, but as you saw at last year's Biipiigwan show, the headlining bands aren't always the last ones. Check the above links for full current details on Dank Fest, as this should be an explosive marathon!

Finally for today, here's notes on three local hard rock bands that we've moved to our inactive band links due to either lengthy inactivity, page deletions, or members focusing on other projects. As usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name, and if we misjudged on any of these bands, let me know!

  • Local metal duo AlterWhite are apparently defunct, as per the deletion of their Facebook page at some point in recent months, and with no substantial remaining pages beyond their YouTube channel, I've regrettably deleted them from our band links. Active from 2011-2013, they showed some promise from their studio material, but frontman Mike Matthews had focused on solo work since late 2012. Best of luck to Mike & Kevin in the future!
  • I've moved local/Peterborough hardcore punk project Kidshit to our inactive band links as well due to a year's inactivity, as I've heard no finite information on the band since last spring, and with members Mark Rand & Jamie Vincent focusing on bands like AlgomA and Cross Dog in recent months, they're at least not a primary focus at present. We'll hear a lot more from both this year, but check out their free demo at the above link, and hopefully we'll see them back at it down the road!
  • I've also moved local hard rock quartet The Side FX to our inactive band links due to their prolonged inactivity since last August, along with 2/3rds of their last members focusing on other primary projects at present (Rob Speers with The Elements and Derek Turner with Garden of Bedlam.) Notably featuring 2 alums of Papa Fogals Chair, The Side FX played live just once last July before activity stalled, but hopefully the guys stay active musically, and best of luck to Rob, Alex, Mike, and Derek!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post later today! Thanks everyone!

Woods Of Ypres' Juno Award Win, Plus Other New Local Metal Videos!!

With a major news story last night in the local metal scene, we have to address it A.S.A.P., so that's the main topic of today's post, but hopefully some people caught the late notice Tym Morrison show on Friday night that we couldn't rush into a full post on here, and hopefully he'll be back with new solo gigs soon! Today's post also features some new recent videos, but first, here's last night's huge top story, so here's what you need to know!

Woods of Ypres have won the Juno Award for Best Metal/Hard Music Album!! As covered on SooToday last night, amongst numerous media and metal websites and Twitter accounts, the defunct local blackened doom metal band's last CD "Woods V: Grey Skies & Electric Light" posthumously won in the Junos' second-year metal category at last night's private gala dinner (hosted by CBC's Jian Ghomeshi) at The Credit Union Eventplex in Regina, Saskatchewan, winning out over other nominees The Cancer Bats, Castle, The Devin Townsend Project, and Ex Deo. Though video has not yet came out from either the dinner or any pre-/post-gala press events, the award presentation was among the first last night, and the band was represented yesterday by guitarist Joel Violette and late frontman David Gold's family, with David's mother Esther accepting the Juno on their behalf. Among her emotional remarks, she said “I’m speaking to you as a mother with a broken heart”, “Everything that we think, say, feel and do runs parallel with our sorrow", and "He was a beautiful man (and) I miss him dearly” (source here), even getting the crowd to do the devil horns in David's honour!

The win was one of at least two for local musicians at the 2013 Junos, as country singer & Korah graduate Crystal Shawanda won the Aboriginal Album of the Year award last night as well. This is all absolutely huge news for the local metal scene, let alone the music scene, and to me, it's complete vindication of David Gold's work, dedication, talents, and efforts with Woods of Ypres and related ventures since their 2002 launch! It's also proof that more local bands can achieve heights like this, and hopefully this is just added incentive for the current generation of metal acts in the Soo area to keep plugging away and climb to similar heights! It's just a shame David couldn't be in Regina last night with his family and Joel to see the fruits of all of this labour, but I hope somehow, somewhere, he's smiling and showing his happiness and gratitude for this huge honour! That said, I do believe that Woods of Ypres will be acknowledged on air in some form during the live Juno Awards telecast on CTV TONIGHT at 8:00 PM, as the untelevised awards usually are, so keep an eye out just in case there's footage of Esther's acceptance speech!

For now though, click here, here, and here for the best photos I've found of Joel & the Gold family from last night's gala, and if I hear any more substantive fallout (i.e. major news articles, presentation/acceptance speech videos, local media coverage), I'll be sure to let you guys know! Congratulations to David, Joel, and everyone else associated with "Woods V", we're all extremely proud!

We'll close today's post with new videos, starting with a new talent show video from Sault Michigan metal quartet Tantrym Tyme! Uploaded to frontman Jacob Hotlen's YouTube channel last week, this is of the former Abstract playing at the Sault Area Middle School talent show (exact date unknown), and it features them covering Volbeat's "Heaven Nor Hell" and Rise Against's "Make It Stop (September's Children)". Their steady improvement is still very present, and it's cool to see more local bands covering Volbeat, but Jacob's vocals still need some development. His range has improved, but I'm curious to see how the tone of his singing voice sounds when he's a bit older. Solid stuff all around, and hopefully they have a lot more up their sleeves for future gigs and plans! Check out Tantrym Tyme's latest video below, and as a note to the school, good move not having the sound guy behind the band this year!

Finally for today, the full free demo from local/Peterborough hardcore punk project Kidshit has been posted onto YouTube (complete with lyrics) by local punk/metal album uploader Richard Dryfist, so there's another outlet to check out this material! Of course, this is the project featuring Cross Dog mainman/veteran local musician Mark Rᶏnd alongside AlgomA drummer Jamie Vincent, and though I can't confirm yet if Cross Dog are similar sounding (or locally based), this is still some quality furious hardcore that calls to mind Mark's earlier Detroit work! Check out the demo's first song "Heroes & Cops" below, and click here for the rest of the material!

That's likely all for today, but stay tuned for more news this week, including this month's YouTube Channel Profiles TOMORROW and our preview of the Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands Finals on Tuesday! Thanks everyone!

A New Local Band, The End Of Clownsack, And Much More!!

Our nice pacing for new posts at the SMS continues on this Wednesday morning, so what's in the pipeline? Today, we have a band that is likely now broken up, a bunch of new band member searches via the Musicians Wanted Facebook group, and updates to some of our monthly CD reviews, but first, we have a new local band to mention, so here's what you need to know! (Updated on Thursday at 3:44 PM)

We have a new local band to add to our Sault Ontario band links, and they are Kidshit, a new-ish hardcore/thrash project from Sault Ontario natives & former Fuller bandmates Jamie Vincent & Mark Ranᶁ! Though active since at least April, they now count as local following Jamie's recent move back to Sault Ste. Marie after living in Edmonton for a few years, where he recently played bass in the hardcore punk band Flint. As for Mark, you're bound to recognize him from tons of recent musical projects, including Lion Ride, Detroit, Bondar, Bin Hawdon & The Taliband, and the soon-to-be-revealed Cross Dog, and while he currently lives in Peterborough, he's still very well known locally! Public information on Kidshit is fairly minimal so far, with their only current online page being this BandCamp page, which features five songs grouped as a free demo that you can check out or download! Much heavier than Mark & Jamie's old Fuller material, these originals clock in at just over 6 minutes in total length, and they remind me of Mark's Detroit and recent solo work the most.

I like where Kidshit are going here, and there's a lot of intense hardcore punk fury here that calls to mind some similar local bands! If these songs were longer, it might help for the overall substance, but I remember that longer wasn't always better (i.e. Detroit's originals.) Kidshit haven't played live yet, and there are some unanswered questions still, but do check them out, and I've added Kidshit to our Sault Ontario metal band links!

Next up, I'd like to note a band that we're regrettably moving to our inactive Sault Michigan band links, that being local funk/hard rock standouts Clownsack. An official statement on their online pages hasn't been made to confirm their end, but ex-bassist Tony "Slappy" Rogers' confirmed the news on his personal Facebook page on June 27th, where he said that "we are done" in a reply to a question on if they were still playing anywhere. Clownsack were one of the most prominent & successful metal bands in the Eastern U.P. dating back to their 2005 debut, which saw them release two CDs, open for Kiss & Meat Loaf at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino, and play numerous shows across Michigan, and their clown personas & song themes helped them really stand out compared to similar sounding bands! However, they haven't played live since the fall of 2010, and have offered very few public updates since the release of their "Funny Farm" EP last year (most recently when Slappy left in April), so this all may have hinted at Clownsack's end to begin with. It's very disappointing to see Clownsack dissolve, as they were one of the most entertaining and well known Sault Michigan metal bands of the late 2000s!

I really enjoyed their albums (particularly "Rotten Candy"), and their stage personas & dedication to their clown characters was admirable & amusing in equal measure! I don't know why activity from their camp slowed down so much in the early 2010s, but as best as I can tell, most of their members are still active musically. Best of luck to Schloppy, Butter Cookie, Sparxx, Slappy, Skronko, and their former bandmates in the future, and hopefully down the road, fans will get their clown sauce once again!

Also today, here's three assorted notes from the Musicians Wanted Facebook group in recent weeks, as there are still Sault Ontario-area musicians looking for a band or musicians to work with! As usual, these are in alphabetical order by name of the artist who made the original post:

  • Local musician Jyles LeBoeuf is looking for progressive metal guitarists or bassists (preferably six string) for a new project he's starting, though public details are sparse as of yet. Could this be a Gates of Winter-style band? I don't know, but if you're interested in trying out, message Jyles at this location or read his post on the Facebook group from yesterday!
  • Former Bear Hunters/Skull After Betrayl guitarist Mike Vincent is looking for a drummer for his new local metal band, in his latest post on the group for band member searches. He's looking for a drummer with double kick and blast beat experience, but if you're at all interested, message Mike at this location or check out his post on the group from November 1st!
  • Asylum Country guitarist and local metal band alum Terry Eaton is looking to start a hard rock band that would cover newer bands like Three Days Grace, The Foo Fighters, Sixx A.M., and various others. He'd share vocals, and he's looking for musicians with lots of experience. This would definitely be an interesting contrast if it takes off, so message him at this link or comment on his Musicians Wanted group post from yesterday!

And finally for today, here's some more recent updates to our monthly CD reviews on the site! Remember as before that these include photo restorations for most of them, including some with no other changes. On our review of Woods of Ypres' last album "Woods V: Grey Skies & Electric Light", I added a brief review of the producer's mix of "Finality", which is only available on the second disc of the album's vinyl pressing, and wasn't present when we first reviewed it in March. Moving to our Sault Michigan-area CD reviews, I edited our reviews of Bad Side's debut CD & their second album to note their breakup and the album's current availability (including that they're now on iTunes and out of print physically), while I also made very similar edits to our review of Clownsack's debut CD "Rotten Candy" & Integrated System of Machines' only album, with lineup updates made for both. Notably, I.S.O.M.'s CD isn't available on any major sites for purchase now, but free streaming links are up on the review! Stay tuned for updates to the rest of our Sault Michigan album reviews shortly!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes at the SMS shortly, including this weekend's metal/hard rock concert previews in our likely next post! Thanks everyone!
