LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Dos Amigos, Tarnished, And One Shot) & Weekend Concert Previews!!

It's almost the Civic Holiday long weekend (well, for most) in Sault Ontario, and there's a lot of hard rock-leaning concerts going down for the occasion, so much so that it will take three posts to get through everything! Alas, most of the shows this weekend were only announced on short notice, including all of the Saturday-only gigs in the post after this one, but today's focuses on bands playing shows tomorrow night in some form or fashion. Here's what you should know to lead off this busy weekend!

Let's bookend things in Sault Michigan and the E.U.P., and we'll start with local classic metal/hard rock quartet Tarnished's return to The Merchants Bar TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band only confirmed this booking on their Facebook page yesterday (The Merch still only rarely promotes bands playing there on their own social media). Last seen in St. Ignace two weeks ago, TOMORROW'S one-night-only gig will be Tarnished's first in Sault Ste. Marie proper since they rocked The Savoy Bar on Independence Day, though Alex & Josh did indeed compete in (and win) the Superior Whitefish Festival battle of the bands in Brimley this past Saturday in their new side band Crush. We'll have more on that project soon, but hopefully they ride that momentum well with Chris & Ron TOMORROW as they shift back to cover mode with Tarnished at The Merch!

TOMORROW'S concert has a 9:00 PM start time, 21+ age limit, and no cover charge as usual. Hopefully Tarnished deliver some fun hard rocking covers for fans at The Merch despite the late notice, so visit the above links for more details, and here's Tarnished live!

Next up, let's head north to Sault Ontario for some more late notice gigs, starting with acoustic punk duo Dos Amigos, who will return to The Whiskey Barrel on Gore Street for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via the venue's Facebook page last week, as part of their weekend music schedule for the rest of the summer, though note that the band has not posted on their Facebook page at all in over three months. TOMORROW'S show will be the BookcluB side project's first publically advertised gig anywhere since rocking the same venue in late June. While we are still lacking public videos of Mikey & Dustin unplugged, fans of their long collective work in the Inner City Surfers and more will enjoy their more reserved take on punk classics TOMORROW! This a one nighter due to The Whisky Barrel's weekly Saturday jazz night.

As usual for local gigs at this acoustic-leaning Irish pub, TOMORROW'S concert has no cover charge, a 19+ age limit, and an 8:00 PM start time. Should be a fun one for punk fans looking for a lighter evening, so visit the above links for more on Dos Amigos' Whisky Barrel return!

Also this weekend, new local rock/metal sextet One Shot will debut at Reggie's Place TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies again for the short notice, we first learned about these dates (let alone the band) when Reggie's posted about them on their Facebook page on Monday. I don't have a lot of specifics on One Shot (not to be confused with the defunct Long Shot), but they appear to mostly be high school aged, if not entirely, and this reminds me of when Reggie's booked Sylo not long after their name change. Kudos to them for booking rising young hard rock talent on occasion like this! One Shot's lineup features singer Ashton Sommers (who you may recognize from local stage musicals), guitarists Tucker Lidstone (who has played solo folk sets at The Distraction) and Aiden Snider, ...

...bassist Alex Fournier (who also has stage musical experience), drummer Edan St. Amour, and backing(?) vocalist Kate Bird. I have yet to find a social media or band page for One Shot, let alone media of them or hints towards their sound, but young local talent is always welcomed, and hopefully they have a strong debut weekend TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! These are 9:30 PM shows with 19+ age limits and no cover as usual, See above for what is publically known so far about One Shot!

We'll close preview post #1 with a rarity for this weekend: previously announced shows that were first advertised before this week! These take us back to Michigan, specifically The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino, where local hard rock band Exit 808 will set up shop TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! After seeing their Merch show in the Soo three weeks ago cancelled due to day job conflicts with multiple band members, this weekend's gigs will be Exit 808's first truly local shows since they rocked The Northern Pines Lounge in early June, with just one E.U.P. weekend left afterwards before the summer season is over. Based on tags on their Facebook page for this weekend's shows, former Exit 808 Double Jack guitarist Nathan Webber will again guest with his old band this weekend, with their ranks otherwise full re: the current lineup. We'll have more from Exit 808's non-local dates since late June in upcoming posts.

Tomorrow & Saturday's St. Ignace shows have 9:00 PM start times, no cover charges, and 21+ age limits. This talented, dual vocalist-led hard rock band should have two more solid nights of lively covers, so as Exit 88 said, bring your friends & a positive attitude! Visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here they are live last month!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for late notice Saturday-only concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!

Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Long Shot

It's now time for our first Defunct Local Band Profile of 2024! This long-running monthly feature looks at randomly selected local metal, hard rock, and/or punk bands from the past, in order to spotlight them and their run for current readers. We drew a band who seemed to come from out of nowhere and vanish similarly during their mid-2010s heyday, so here's what you should know on them!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long Shot

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Genre: Hard Rock

Lineup: (Members not in their last full lineup are in italics)

Evan Dawe, vocals/guitar
Nathan Muto, guitar
Adam Dawe, bass/backing vocals
Jeremy Ganuelas, drums/backing vocals

Audio/Video: In one of their last acts before dissolving, Long Shot released a self-titled EP on their Bandcamp page in July 2016, featuring three original songs, and it remains on sale for $4 (it can be streamed for free as well). Unfortunately, the vast majority of their public videos were taken down when they deleted their Facebook page after their breakup, but at least two videos are still extant, including one of them covering The Foo Fighters' "Everlong" at Rotaryfest Stage 1 in 2015, and as embedded below, Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" at the Speak Easy Battle of the Bands!

Info/Analysis:
Quietly launching in early 2014, and uniquely comprised of musicians not known from any prior local bands on record, Long Shot eased into things with private and corporate bookings for much of that year before ramping up their presence as a live act in 2015. Publically debuting that March via a second place finish in the fan voted Speak Easy Battle of the Bands, Long Shot would also be seen that year at Rotaryfest and Passport To Unity, while also bringing live music to the Fraternal Order of Eagles club in Heyden, and playing an increasing number of traditional nightclub gigs. After spending early 2016 in the studio, Long Shot returned for one more gig that July at LopLops alongside the now also-defunct Stereo North, before abruptly deciding to part ways the following month. A varied range of covers (including some surprises) bolstered by solid hard rock originals served Long Shot well, especially with Nathan's skilled lead guitar work, and hopefully we see him, the Dawes, and Jeremy again down the road!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope that you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! This series will return on or around February 10th for our first Sault Michigan profile of 2024, where our next randomly selected band will be 2007-2012 hard rock band Free Refill! Look for that then, and for weekend concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (A Dire Setback) & Lots Of Assorted Recent Updates!!

On this cold and snowy Monday morning, let's see if some new metal, hard rock, and punk news can warm things up a bit! This is mostly an assorted short news story spree today, but leading off, we do have a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next year, so here's what you need to know!

The second official concert from new local promoters Live705 has been announced, and it will go down on Saturday, January 21st at The Oddfellows Hall! Seemingly similar in structure to Live705's debut last month, a planned roster of 6 bands will take part in this concert, and the currently listed bands include Live705's own flagship alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback (in their third announced concert set), plus two bands who didn't play in November, namely post-punk quartet Gnaeus (in a rare Oddfellows Hall appearance) and new local indie rock trio The Autumn Roots. The latter band are new to the venue, but frontman Jeremy Hannah was once a frequent promoter here with Big Voiced Records, so it will be nice to see him back on familiar ground! Three more bands are being sought to perform on January 21st, so if you or your band want in, message promoters A.S.A.P. via the official Facebook event page! An $8 cover charge is in effect for this ALL AGES concert, which is planned to begin at 6:00 PM.

After a successful debut last month, complete with a more professional lighting and staging setup than is often seen at The Oddfellows Hall, it's great to see the Live705/A Dire Setback crew back for another go around of more varied all ages action! It will be interesting to see what bands are added to the lineup from here, but there's over a month to go, so stay tuned for updates as they roll in, and see above for current details!

Finally for today, here's ten assorted shorter news stories from the last while, including band link updates, studio recording teasers, and much more! As usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

  • We have restored a defunct band to our defunct local band links, they being 20 Pack of Marshmallows, the late 2000s hard rock band from ex-Haggith/Project 421 singer Curtis McKenzie and his brother Travis! This band was originally deleted from our links when their website was "frozen" by host Webs, but their earlier Tripod page under the name Wanko Twist (which we featured here in 2014) is still alive and well, so they're back where they belong! Give their Tripod page a look for a prototype of Curt's later band portfolio!
  • In their newest Facebook page posting, local alternative hard rock trio The Din shared a photo from Mission Control Studios, and noted that they were "in a familiar spot... doing familiar stuff with a familiar guy." This heavily implies that they were recently recording music with Dustin Jones of Tidal Records, which they previously did for their song "Alleyways & Apartments", but is a sophomore CD in the works, or is it just a loose recording session? Stay tuned!
  • We have deleted mid-2000s hard rock band Downfall from our band links, as their only surviving webpage was taken down with Chris Belsito's Murderfly Entertainment website (which it was hosted through) was closed for unannounced reasons in the past few months. Disappointing to be sure, as their material was solid, but look for guitarist Mike Yakasovich with Northwest!
  • Newer local death metal band Exploring Detritus (formerly Kaepora Gaebora) have quietly parted ways with guitarist Daeson Lesage, as per his removal from their Facebook page's lineup. A reason for his exit wasn't announced, but hopefully nothing bad happened, and that we see him in a new band at some point! The newly renamed band have teased that "once the work stops", the metal will begin, so look for more from Exploring Detritus soon, including any potential searches for a new guitarist!
  • This is just a housecleaning note given that the festival is no longer held in the area, but we fixed the link for the annual marijuana culture concert festival Hempfest from their Facebook group (which is still active but considered closed) to their official website. The 18th annual installment, and fourth in it's current home of Moonbeam, was successfully held in August, and see the above links for more on Hempfest as it currently stands!
  • Local indie/alternative hard rock quartet Id Iota revealed on their Facebook page yesterday that, as the snow comes down, they are sneaking "shelter in the studio", with singer Christian Lemay recording vocals at guitarist Dustin Goodall's home recording studio Unsalted Audio. Is this the first public tease of recording sessions for their first full length CD that they had previously referenced in interviews, or is something else afoot? Keep tabs above for updates!
  • We have switched the link for defunct local hard rock quartet Long Shot from their Facebook page (which was sadly deleted recently) to their Bandcamp page, which is thankfully still online and with their only EP still available. I wish bands wouldn't delete their online pages like this, but best of luck to all 4 guys in the future! For reference sake, frontman Evan Dawe moved to Sarnia recently (no word on if this was a direct reason for their breakup or not), and has recently joined forces with fellow singer/guitarist John Pilat in a new indie rock duo named Evan.John.
  • In another deletion from our defunct local band links, we have removed 2011-2012 death metal/hardcore band March Into Regression due to the deletion of their Facebook (and only online) page in recent months. Also known as Bring The Misery and the first version of With Blood Build Character (among other briefly used names), M.I.R. played a handful of notable summer shows with a wildly fluctuating lineup, and while it's a shame they didn't last longer, look for alumni in current bands like The Autumn Roots, The Bear Hunters, Exploring Detritus, and Them!
  • One more band deletion from our defunct & inactive links, they being Social Suicide, the 2011-2014 punk/death metal band led by March Into Regression bassist Tyler St. Amour, with Ray Cowan from that band also in an early lineup. Despite signing with Blood Shed Productions, Social Suicide never really got off the ground, nor did they post any public media, before their only Facebook page was quietly deleted in recent months. Look for Tyler and Anthony Boudreau in Them, and ex-drummer Keeghan Rosso in the folk rock band Great Chamberlain!
  • Remember how an unidentified band from local hard rock musician Steven Flint was scheduled to headline at The Rednecks Saloon this past Saturday, but was never publically confirmed? Well, as it turns out, that night's entertainment became an open jam night, with Steven's Band Camp Rejects bandmates (minus Jamie July) joined by Mourning Wood bandmate Terry Eaton and Lucky 13 guitarist Robin "Bones" Lee as the one-off house band. Sounds like this would have been a fun time, and hopefully there was a great turnout! Our source for this info is Rejects guitarist Mike Muto on the Facebook event page for The B.C.R.s' Rednecks show the previous night.

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates later this week! Thanks everyone!

Long Shot - "Long Shot" EP Review!!

With a slow week upon us, let's keep things rolling with our 87th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, as we're taking a look at defunct local hard rock quartet Long Shot's self-titled EP! Fully posted (as far as I can tell) on July 13th via their Bandcamp page, Long Shot's sole release was self-recorded and produced earlier this year with their classic lineup, including singer/guitarist Evan Dawe, guitarist Nathan Muto, Evan's brother Adam on bass, and drummer Jeremy Ganuelas. "Long Shot" can be downloaded above on Bandcamp for $4 (or more if you're so inclined), and while you can stream all three songs there for free, consider buying the EP to support Long Shot's work! Note that I can't confirm if there was a limited CD run or not, and if so, if it had extra material (as three songs is short, even for an EP), but unless otherwise confirmed, we'll treat the EP on Bandcamp as the complete final release. Running for just 12 minutes, let's begin our latest review!

This EP begins with "Double Take", which opens up with a hard rock instrumental section that even has a bit of a funk guitar lick, and it has a catchiness to it! Lyrically about giving an attractive former flame a second look (for better or worse), the hard crunching riff contrasts with Evan's higher melodic vocals, which at times sound like they're for the wrong song, especially one with this subject. Musically, this song has a great flow, with Nathan shining on lead guitar, and Jeremy's drumming is clear and distinct, adding up to a solid opening number for hard rock fans, but some may find the vocals to be to much of a tonal shift.

Second is "The Beat", which is about patrolling on guard or "walking the beat", while trying to survive a number of described terrors alone at night. A longer & bluesier track, Evan's lower vocals suit this song better, but the somewhat processed singing makes it harder to hear him over the band proper, somewhat muting the ominous lyrics. Adam's bass pounds well, and Nathan gets another quality solo, and while blues rock fans will absolutely want to check this song out, I preferred the opener musically & for vocal clarity. "Long Shot" closes with "Long Goodbye" (almost fittingly, given their breakup a month later), though the lyrics reference leaving town & one's lover for an indefinite time. Despite the emotional lyrics, the song is a mid-tempo hard rocker that has the best matched vocals yet, though they could be louder in the mix, and the backing chorus vocals don't flow perfectly. Solid capper to the EP that showcases the guys' musical talents, but the song's end feels incomplete, like they forgot to record a final chorus.

So, what are my final thoughts on Long Shot's debut EP? There was work to do, but this was a solid debut effort that it's a shame we won't see a sequel for! Compared to their often more varied cover selections in concert, Long Shot showcased a nice hard rock base on these three songs (especially "Double Take"), and while this is a small sample size, you do get a sense as to why they finished second at last year's Speak Easy Battle of the Bands! Considering that these guys weren't widely known commodities before forming, they definitely made a mark here, with Nathan Muto playing excellently on lead guitar on all three songs, and Evan Dawe matching up nicely on rhythm, while Adam Dawe and Jeremy Ganuelas handled the low rhythm end in their own right, but Evan could show a little more grit and energy on vocals, and you could barely hear him on "The Beat". Long Shot had a lot of potential and a unique sound & presence, and whether they reunite down the road or not, check out Long Shot's debut EP above!

I hope you guys liked this month's CD review! Next month's review will definitely be on a new release, with Dafter, Michigan rock artist Ken "SweetKenny" Sutton very possible, likely for his April solo album "In Your Face", but that's not 100% certain. You guys may remember that I received an advance copy of The Apocalypse Afterparty's debut EP "Bufflesnort" last week, but the band hasn't announced a formal release date yet, so a review is still up in the air. A new surprise album could of course come before Halloween, but in any event, look for a new CD review next month, and stay tuned for this weekend's concert previews next! Thanks everyone!

The End Of Long Shot, Sault Michigan Weekend Concert Previews, And More!!

Before we finally tackle the results of last month's poll, we have a new news post on this Thursday morning, and it includes the last of the previews for this weekend's hard rock shows, some assorted recent updates, and leading off, here's a surprise band breakup on the Ontario side of the border!

Local hard rock quartet Long Shot have surprisingly announced that they have disbanded, as per their Facebook page yesterday. The band cited that it "was a mutual decision" and "that now was the right time", and while they did not elaborate otherwise on the reason for the breakup, note that Long Shot have only played one public concert in the past nine months. Though their members were previously unfamiliar from other recent bands, Long Shot migrated from covers-centric sets at private and corporate events in 2014 to becoming an increasingly familiar sight at concerts in the mid-2000s, including a runner-up finish at last year's Speak Easy Battle of the Bands, a set at last year's Rotaryfest Stage 1, and a number of solo headlining sets at The Eagles Club in Heyden. In the above Facebook post, the band also confirmed that their debut self-titled EP is officially out, presumably upon the posting of the last song on their Bandcamp page on Jully 13th, but if there was a physical CD release or additional songs in that format, I can't confirm them at this time.

Long Shot were a solid band that injected some added flavour to the local scene, combining catchy hard rock originals with some unexpected yet well played covers, and while the guys weren't well known commodities in the local scene beforehand, they definitely made a good mark in a short time! Regarding a review of their EP, , we could look at it as soon as next month, now that I know it was completed, so keep an eye out, and best of luck to Evan, Nathan, Adam, and Jeremy in the future!

Next up, let's head across to the Sault Michigan area for previews of this weekend's remaining hard rock shows (barring a super late notice announcement), starting with the return of local hard rock quartet 415E to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Two weeks removed from the private "Bro Bash" event in St. Ignace, this will be the former Hubbard Menard Band's first public show since last month at the Soo Kewadin, and 415E should be ready to party with a strong weekend of hard hitting, Van Halen-inspired favourites for fans at The Northern Pines Lounge! If you can't see them this weekend, you can check them out at the end of September in Sault Michigan too. 415E will be on tonight & tomorrow night at 9:00 PM, both shows are 21+ affairs, and there are no announced cover charges. Check the above links for more details, and here's 415E live!

Lastly for this weekend, the first annual Musicians Festival in Rudyard will go down TOMORROW at the Rudyard Township Park! Launched by local classic rockers Steelhead to help raise funds for Rudyard area school music programs and the Carol's Corral Foundation, this special family concert event will see a dozen musical acts rocking out tomorrow, with other activities planned including a bouncy castle, a smoked pig roast and other food items, and much more, so visit the above links and the official Facebook event page for more details on non-musical events! Steelhead will headline at 12:00 AM tomorrow, with Bay Mills masked metal quartet Stoned Ape Evolution co-headlining at 11:00 PM, and local hard rock/blues quartet Project 906 playing at 10:00 PM. Evening bands (largely sans online pages that I've found) will include Dondee Lanes regulars Second Offense at 9:00 PM, The Gaskins at 8:00 PM, The North Country Band at 7:00 PM, The Wednesday Night Headliners at 6:00 PM, and Traverse City's New Jazz Trio at 5:00 PM.

Early acts will include Crossroads member Denny Verrett at 4:00 PM, Hayley Malaska at 3:00 PM, Jimmy Williams at 2:00 PM, and Rob & Bob Malaski at 1:00 PM, while Traverse City experimental trio The Neighborhood Dogs (replacing Alex Schrovenwever) will open at 12:00 PM, and while they aren't on the poster, they were confirmed in official lineups elsewhere. This FREE & ALL AGES event will take place at 18725 South Mackinac Trail in Rudyard, with camping encouraged, but food and vendors will have costs that you can double check above. This sounds like a fun event that could very well fill the LemmaFest gap, and with some heavier bands to cap things off, so check the above links for more, and here's Project 906 live!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Local alternative/hard rock trio The Din are planning to launch a new "Din Talks" series on their YouTube channel where they'll answer fan questions both about the band and even about unrelated topics. If you're interested in submitting a question for a future video, comment on The Din's Facebook page's thread about it, and stay tuned for more from their recent album release!
  • New local progressive metal band Kraken Mara have posted two new introductions for new original songs named "Straus" and "Ishka" to their Reverbnation page in the past month. While the Late & Loud successors have yet to unveil the full versions (vocals or not), these have the promising djent-influenced metal that has given fans a good early impression, so give them a look above! Note that the band spells their name on their Facebook page as one word ("KrakenMara") now, but if this is permanent, no other official links omit the space yet.
  • The original crash band, Sykotyk Rampage, will make their first concert appearance of 2016 when they take a rare road trip to Sudbury to headline at The Asylum on September 9th! The improvised local blues/hard rock quartet will headline this show, which will also feature ex-bassist Brian Cattapan's current Sudbury band Aggressive Acoustic among the openers. It's great to see Sykotyk Rampage back at last, so click here for more details on their concert out east, and hopefully we see them back on a local stage sooner rather than later!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for last month's poll results and our newest poll next! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? (August 2016 Update)

For our second post of the day, here's this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post, as we begin another month of feature posts with our look at the current whereabouts of upcoming metal, hard rock, and punk albums! This month's installment has albums from 13 local bands, with 8 entries having new information (as noted with the album's title in italics), but with two of these albums having release concerts in the next two weeks, these will be their final appearances in this series barring an unforeseen release delay. So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AlgomA's untitled split CD with Hooded Menace

Rumoured Songs (A): "Failed Stunt Fatality", "Canis Rabidus", "Brazen Bull", "The Longest Swim"

Rumoured Songs (H): Unknown

Background: In recent months, local doom metal trio AlgomA have announced on their Facebook page that they are planning to release a split EP with Finnish death/doom metal quartet Hooded Menace later this year, to be released by Doomentia Records with art by Paolo Girardi, though updates haven't followed on it. For reference, these plans followed the announcement and release of their split vinyl EP with Saskatchewan doom metallers Chronobot, which successfully came out in April, but it remains to be seen if this will be formatted similarly. In any event, AlgomA's tracks were/are being recorded locally at Six, Two, Oh.

Current Release Status: No idea, but seeing as the Chronobot split was successfully released, the Hooded Menace one has precedent to come out without fail also! That said, the Hooded Menace split has taken a back seat publically while the Chronobot split saw it's release, so things may be a ways off yet, but stay tuned as more comes in from either side!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Apocalypse Afterparty - Bufflesnort

Rumoured Songs: "The Crowd" (The Fury cover), "Rebel Scum" (The Fury cover), "Sweet F*ck"

Background: Before ever playing a public concert, new local rap/metal band The Apocalypse Afterparty announced on their Facebook page in August 2014 that they had begun working on their 3 song debut EP with producer Jamie Vincent (AlgomA), though they also alluded to recording the remaining songs with different producers. The song that they recorded with Jamie is "The Crowd", which you can hear in full at this link, though recent postings have hinted at recording said EP this year for a release and recording sessions at Tidal Records' own Mission Control Studios, albeit with a new lineup in tow. Though pubic updates have been sporadic as of late, the band announced in December that the title would be "Bufflesnort", and it'd be a 3 song release.

Current Release Status: As per the band's Facebook page in December, "Bufflesnort" is "nearing end-of-production", with planned releases on mp3, USB sticks, and vinyl (no CDs?), though a teased return to the stage in the spring has came & went. This was all preceded by "songwriter" Steve Mozarowski's departure from the band and related lineup changes, but how that will impact things is unclear. It should be noted that The Apocalypse Afterparty's version of "The Crowd" is featured on last year's Blood Shed Productions 11-way split album, but at last word, the EP itself is still in the works. Hopefully more comes out soon on it!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Bear Hunters - The Dead Testament

Rumoured Songs: "The Void", "The Omen", "Neckbreaker", "I Fear No God", "Servitude", "Transcend Judgement", "For Glory", "The Wrath Of Angmar", "The Dying Den", "The Dead Testament", "Deception" (bonus rerecording), "The Forest of Forests" (bonus track)

Background: In tentative planning since 2014 under this title, local death metal quintet The Bear Hunters have been playing songs intended for their second full length CD for a few years now, but only fully began recording sessions for "The Dead Testament" on October 2nd. Following a brief fundraising campaign and the gradual unveiling of song titles, the band have been working with producer Dustin Jones at Mission Control Studios, and have shared sporadic updates on their Instagram page. Like on 2014's "Eternal Hibernation", rhythm guitarist Josh Stephney has recorded parts for the album despite living in Southern Ontario, but it's not yet clear on how bonus tracks will be handled.

Current Release Status: The band hasn't given any firm timetables for when to expect "The Dead Testament" in stores, but as of this writing, the band has finished most tracking sessions, with rhythm guitar work ongoing in May while Josh was home. The band is aiming for a more professional sound and release for their sophomore effort, but the band noted on their Facebook page that if things stay this productive, a release in the late summer may be possible. Keep an eye out for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Caroline Divine's debut album

Rumoured Songs: "Caroline Divine", "Looking For A Fight"

Background: After prior teases of recording sessions and the search for a spot to record, personal Facebook pages from members of newer local glam/power pop trio Caroline Divine have confirmed that they are indeed working on their debut album. Greater details on the track listing, release formats, and so forth have yet to be made, with the band taking time off from concerts since late last year. While studio work was thought to be a partial cause for the stage hiatus, Caroline Divine haven't posted on their Facebook page yet this year, last surfacing publically when the guys backed up Jesse Merineau at March's Speak Easy Battle of the Bands.

Current Release Status: No idea yet, especially as the band hasn't shown their cards yet concerning album progress, but follow the band to see when/if they announce anything!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Din - Give In To The Din

Rumoured Songs: "In Search of the Perfect Moment", "Flux", "Alleyways & Apartments", "Out Of My League", "75" (Haggith cover), "Remember", "Potato (Should Have Known Better)", "The Rose", and "A Drive Through The Peninsula"

Background: The former Mike Haggith & The Din are no strangers to recording studio material, with earlier acid/jam era lineups recording a few free "albums" for digital distribution circa 2014, but the band only began working on a formal paid & pressed studio CD in 2016, after transitioning to a more structured alternative/hard rock sound last year. Following the surprise paid release of their live CD "The Din Does Laundry" earlier this year, The Din have commenced work on their debut studio album "Give In To The Din", with cover artwork, the first three songs ("In Search of the Perfect Moment", "Potato", and "Alleyways & Apartments"), teaser videos, and this virtual preview of the album case & booklet available to check out online, with the virtual preview confirming the track listing, which omits such familiar songs as "Of Cars & Criminals" and "Cowardly Hearts Beneath the Stars". Despite frontman Mike Haggith's extensive past with PaperClip Productions, "Give In To The Din" is being recorded at the upstart Pretoria Hill Productions with producer Daniel Schmidt.

Current Release Status: The Din will officially launch "Give In To The Din" with a CD release concert at The Tech's auditorium on August 12th, which will have ALL AGES admission for $5, a 7:00 PM start time, and album charges likely in the $10 range, with local in-store and online availability sure to follow. This is definitely an anticipated album, so be at the former St. Mary's College on August 12th to get your copy first!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Elements' debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Liar"

Background: Arguably better known for their funk, ska, and hard rock covers, local quartet The Elements have been adding original material to their sets since last year, and have since publically confirmed earlier teases that they are working on a debut EP. Frontman Rob Speers has confirmed in personal conversations that they have been working in studio on the release, which will have at least 5 tracks, and I believe it's being self-recorded, but further public updates are minimal at best. It's also not known if they'll employ any guest performers, such as Josh Norling or DJ Seith, who added well-received saxophone and turntable elements to some recent concerts.

Current Release Status: At this stage, I have no idea, but Rob sounded like things were going well in studio, so we'll have to see what comes out next on The Elements' first EP!

Gates of Winter - Perihelion

Rumoured Songs: "The Stars Call My True Name", "Edin Na Zu", "Dimensions", "Time Warp", "Wormhole Mechanics", "Prometheus"

Background: Despite a hiatus from live concerts lasting over 7 years, Gates of Winter never broke up, and are slowly working on their follow-up to 2008's "Lux Aeterna". The first glimpse of the new album was unveiled in February 2010, when frontman/producer Lee Maines uploaded a snippet of their new song "The Stars Call My True Name" onto his YouTube channel, and he followed that up with more demo & rehearsal clips sporadically over the last couple of years, though all were later taken down. The band launched a new Facebook page in August 2010 to keep fans updated on the sessions, including the unveiling of a new song title, "Time Warp", and while Sault native Jon Morrison was announced as the album's drummer that fall, the album will feature programmed drums. In November 2011, bassist Steve Furgiuele confirmed in a YouTube video that the album, now titled "Perihelion", was planned for release in December 2012, with some older re-recordings likely for the summer, but Lee has since confirmed that the album would be delayed further, be retracted to EP length, and possibly be renamed. Other new songs, tentatively called "Wormhole Mechanics" & "Prometheus", was previewed in this video & this video that were uploaded in 2013 & last April respectively. Whether ex-keyboardist Brian Holmes will be included on the EP is currently unknown.

Current Release Status: Personal commitments and the like have slowed things down incredibly, but in the band's most recent preview video (featuring audio samples), Gates of Winter hinted that work was winding down on "Perihelion", including noting that "the silence ends soon". Good art takes time, and knowing Gates of Winter's talent and attention to detail, they won't want to release this until everything's perfect. I'll admit that I know a bit more on "Perihelion" than what I've posted here, but I'll wait until more public word comes out. Keep an eye out for updates!

Gnaeus - Meditations

Rumoured Songs: "Lovers", "Mountains", "Circles", "The Edge", "Calling Out", "Exercise In Self Awareness", "Fire", "When You're Gone", "The Sound"

Background: Amidst various teases of recording sessions, local post-punk/garage rock quartet Gnaeus have confirmed in recent concerts that they were recording their debut CD "Meditations" (renamed from "Loomings" in early 2016) at Tidal Records' own Mission Control Studios, stemming from their "Best Song" win at March 2015's VM Radio Battle of the Bands. The band has since revealed the full album artwork (largely a retitling of the original "Loomings" cover), and have released advance copies of the album for review, which confirm the nine song track listing, omitting originals like "Crave" & "Hail Mary". Though drummer Brendan Garlick moved out of town earlier this year and was replaced by Alex Proulx, Brendan did complete drum tracking before his departure.

Current Release Status: While the original December timeline has long since came & went, Gnaeus will officially release "Meditations" THIS FRIDAY with their own CD release concert at The Rockstar Bar! Albums will cost $10, with in-store and online availability to come, while admission to the 19+ show will be $5, and everything will start at 9:00 PM. Sounds like a great time, so don't miss out on Friday to get your hands on "Meditations" first!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Long Shot's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Long Goodbye", "El Camino", "Double Take", "The Beat"

Background: After prior teases of writing original material, local hard rock quartet Long Shot revealed on their Facebook page on January 11th that they were almost done mastering their debut EP. Public updates hadn't preceded the announcement, but Long Shot had posted live demos of three original songs onto their Reverbnation page last fall, and have played these originals and more live since. The band has since launched a Bandcamp page featuring the official studio tracks of "Double Take" "The Beat", and "Long Goodbye", along with the apparent album cover and EP's self-title.

Current Release Status: Other than the reveal of EP sessions almost being finished and their three new song postings, I have no idea when this might come out, and with the band's members not being familiar sights from prior bands, we have nothing to compare it to. The guys have shown skill and maturity since their debut, and fingers crossed that the release is coming soon, especially given the pre-release of three songs!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike Haggith - Neighbourhood Watch Revisited

Rumoured Songs: "To Whom This May Concern", "Room 822", "The Ballad of K2/K3", "The Day The Lights Went Out", "Limb Coast", "Leon the Janitor", "Far Too Long"

Background: After previously hinting at a re-recorded version of his 45th solo album "Neighbourhood Watch" in late 2015, local solo musician Mike Haggith officially began releasing new versions of songs from the original 2012 CD onto his YouTube channel in February, those being of "Limb Coast" & "Room 822". His first full release of new recordings since last summer's "The Warinside", "Neighbourhood Watch Revisited" is being recorded at PaperClip Productions, with Mike being joined on at least some songs by Din bandmate Brandan Glew on drums and ex-Din/Haggith bandmate Curtis McKenzie on guitar.

Current Release Status: I have no idea, but Mike is usually an efficient artist when it comes to recording and releasing solo material, and if there's a delay, he'll be honest about it, so it could be soon! However, if there are any plans for it to come out on the 4th anniversary of the original's release, "Neighbourhood Watch", keep watch for it in October. Curtis has revealed in this video that it's "steadily nearing the completion stage", so stay tuned for updates as they come in!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Redundant's debut CD

Rumoured Songs: "Miles Apart", "That December", "What You'll Do"

Background: Over two and a half years after their last documented studio sessions in the spring of 2012, local punk trio Redundant revealed on their Facebook page in November 2014 that they were finally working on finishing their debut CD, and will look to hold a CD release party for it upon it's completion. Details are otherwise minimal, including on if the guys will just package their older studio work for the release, or include new recordings, perhaps at bassist James White's studio White Wreckords. We'll keep you posted if we hear more!

Current Release Status: Though we don't know much on the new/revived album plans, Redundant did sound serious about completing their CD. That said, Redundant have only played once or twice in 2015 and haven't made any public statements regarding the album since 2014. The band did resume public activity in March 2016, announcing that they were writing new songs and working on "new studio shit", but it's not clear how earlier album sessions would play in. If we hear any updates, we'll be sure to let you know!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Skeyes of Seven's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Enough", "See The Truth", "Fallen Faith", "Destination Unknown", "No One Cares", "Pretend", "Cognitive Dissonance"

Background: Already no strangers to the studio after recording their songs "Fallen Faith" and "Enough" as single in each of the last two years, local modern hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven hit the studio to record their debut EP last year, though only publically confirmed that an EP was in the works in January on their Facebook page. Sessions are ongoing locally at Deluca Sound Productions, who have shared videos of band members tracking material for the EP, but four confirmed songs were strongly teased in March via some cryptic Facebook photo postings. At this stage, it's not entirely clear on whether the band will include any other singles, but ex-drummer John Mignacca did record tracks for the release before moving to Sudbury last year.

Current Release Status: No idea yet, but as of January 17th, Skeyes of Seven had only one more song to record before sending the tracks to be mixed & mastered. Hopefully this can see a release at some point, as Skeyes of Seven have arguably been more active in studio than in concert since their 2012 formation, but to be fair, they may be waiting until they announce their new drummer so it can be tied with their latest concert return. Follow along to see where things go for their debut EP!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Telephone & Address - "Monster", "The Early Tapes", and
"Are You or Have You Ever Been?"

Rumoured Songs (M): Unknown

Rumoured Songs (E): "The Plumbers"

Rumoured Songs (A): Unknown

Background: Telephone & Address mainman Chris Shoust announced on their Facebook page last year that he was working on releasing "The Early Tapes", a compilation of songs from the first 4 Telephone & Address albums (2011's self titled album, and 2012's "Live", "No. 3", and "Broken Head"). Since then however, he revealed that a separate new album named "Monster" is done, with an advanced copy leaked to him by AlgomA drummer Jamie Vincent, which likely hints that Jamie helped produce it. Most recently, collaborator/Gore Street Cafe owner Sam Decter revealed on his blog The Tinderbox that Telephone & Address would put out an album named "Are You or Have You Ever Been?" through his new cassette tapes-only indie label BGP Tapes, with Sam's new band The Leash Kids on side B, but Chris himself hasn't confirmed this publically, and Sam abruptly moved out of town last month. In any event, some songs from these albums may be on their Soundcloud page, and they're likely to turn up on Telephone & Address' Bandcamp page and on Interpunk down the road.

Current Release Status: Chris indicated on the project's Facebook page that "Monster" would be pressed last fall, which has came & went, and it's not clear if a release is coming soon or not. Regarding the "The Early Tapes", Chris revealed in March 2015 that it "will be delayed for some time", though he didn't elaborate on why specifically. Finally, "Are You or Have You Ever Been?" (which has a similar name to Chris & Sam's short-lived side project band) has no public indications of it's release, but with Sam moving, it's release prospects are up in the air (at least in the cassette tape form.) We'll keep you posted when more on any of these comes out!

I hope you guys liked this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! This series (sans The Din and Gnaeus) will return next month, likely on September 2nd as usual, while our next feature post will be this month's Defunct Local Band Profile one week from tomorrow! That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Mourning Wood & The 3 Day Millionaires), And Sault Ontario Weekend Concert Previews!!

It's about time to dive into another weekend of concert previews on the SMS, and while this is a much quieter weekend now that Rotaryfest has came and went, we will hold this weekend's 415E previews (and anything on even later notice) until tomorrow's post, so look for them then! Now, let's dive into hard rock and punk shows taking place in Sault Ontario this weekend, starting with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Mourning Wood will reportedly return to Reggie's Place on Queen Street East for concerts TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, we only heard about the shows via drummer Glen Thomas' personal Facebook page on Tuesday, and don't expect the band to publically promote these on Facebook, they never seem to for the downtown Reggie's. Coming one month after this popular and frequently seen band's last shows at the country-leaning downtown bar, THIS WEEKEND's three night stand will be Mourning Wood's first shows anywhere since their Esquire Club gigs last week, which personal Facebook postings confirm was a shorthanded weekend, with both guitarist Steven Flint and bassist Paul Belair absent for unannounced reasons. Filling in were Mojo/Bone Yard guitarist Alex Dettore and Lucky 13 guitarist Robin "Bones" Lee (on bass), and you can see both with Mourning Wood via at least one personal Facebook video upload if you know where to look.

Alex and Robin are skilled veteran musicians with rock and country backgrounds, and hopefully they filled in well at The Esquire Club last weekend! No word (as of this writing) if Steven and/or Paul will be absent TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and/or SATURDAY too, but we'll let you know if anything is confirmed! These latest Reggie's shows have likely 10:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 19+ age limits. See the above links for more details, and here's Mourning Wood live!

Next up, fellow local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires will return to The Rockstar Bar TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies again for the short notice, the band only announced the shows earlier this week via their Facebook event page. Fresh off of their Rotaryfest debut last week, these will be The 3 Day Millionaires' first Rockstar Bar shows in over a month, but they do follow their sister band Havadder's own latest gigs at this venue, also last week. TOMORROW'S show will be a standard show for Steve, Travis, Jeremey, and Scott, but Saturday's will double as the afterparty for Sault Roller Derby's Loud and Proud event at The Rankin Arena, so you know the crowd will be hopping THIS SATURDAY, and see above for details on the roller derby event! Both of this weekend's shows are 19+ events with no announced cover charges and 9:00 PM start times. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and here's The 3 Day Millionaires live!

Moving to previously announced concerts, the prolific Tym Morrison is expected to bring his acoustic solo hard rock shows back to Gliss Steak & Seafood for a third straight weekend of ttriple bookings TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY! Though not acknowledged via a Facebook event page as of this writing, Tym's lengthy concert arrangement at The Quality Inn's house restaurant has proven to be a long term success, and hopefully his unplugged singing and guitar work will prove to be a fan favourite again at Gliss this weekend! As usual for his weekly Gliss stops, there's no announced cover charges or age limits in effect for these matinee shows, which all take place at 6:00 PM, but remember that Gliss is a sit-down restaurant. For more details, see the above links, and here's Tym live at The Harp a few years back!

Finally for today's previews, local post-punk quartet Gnaeus and hard rock quartet Long Shot will join forces to rock LopLops Lounge TOMORROW NIGHT! This union of 2015 Speak Easy battle competitors and fast-rising local bands with debut albums on the horizon should provide a solid night of entertainment for fans, with Gnaeus still riding high following their Rotaryfest set last week to boot! As well, Long Shot will surprisingly be making their first concert appearance of the year (and apparent LopLops debut), so be sure to get there early to take in Long Shot's talented blend of originals and covers! Neither band is publically or officially tying this show to a CD release, so if one/both happen to have a surprise launch tomorrow, it's news to us. Part of LopLops' Fresh Weekend (with DJ John Yun spinning tunes there on Saturday), this 19+ concert has a $5 cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time in effect. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and here's Gnaeus live at LopLops!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for our 415E previews and more tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

Rotaryfest Stage 2 & Din/Id Iota Concert Previews, Plus More Recent Notes!!

At last, our extended previews of this weekend's stacked concert lineup are coming to an end! Today, we're covering the all-original Second Stage of our local summer festival, and an afterparty concert from two of it's bands, but to round things out, we have some assorted recent news and notes, so here's what you should know!

The eleventh installment of Rotaryfest's Stage 2 (a.k.a. the Second Stage) goes down TOMORROW! Returning to the "redirected" Clergue Park stage beside the Art Gallery for a second straight year (and also remaining as an all-local, one day event since it's 2014 hiatus), this year's original-focused Second Stage lacks an official sponsor, but you can still help the cause via the Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to support it's funding, as they still have a ways to go to meet their goal! The show will go on though, so who can you see at Stage 2 this year? Headlining at 7:00 PM tomorrow are VM Radio Battle-winning indie rock quartet K.I.C.K. in their festival debut, and they're a fitting choice, given that last year's battle winners (Gnaeus) headlined last year's Second Stage as well! Boatload Killers frontman Liam Seymour will trade his regular blues rock sound for pop rock in a solo showcase at 6:00 PM, with bandmate Blake Jackson and Gianni Gagoots drummer Frank McCormick that will see them put a rock twist on current pop music, though no word on if they have any planned originals.

Liam's very talented, and it'll be interesting to see how this set goes in his solo Rotaryfest debut! The aforementioned Gnaeus will bring their post-punk sound back to Stage 2 at 5:00 PM for a second straight year as the highest placed hard rock or punk act, while progressive rock quartet Machines Dream will take the Second Stage for the second time tomorrow at 4:00 PM (fourth time if you count The Craig West Band as one & the same.) Alternative hard rock quartet Id Iota will debut at the festival at 3:00 PM, while jazz/prog rock quartet The Wild Iris will play their fourth Rotaryfest set (twice previously on Stage 1, plus last year on Stage 2) with a set at 2:00 PM. The day's events will be opened by alternative hard rock trio The Din in their own Rotaryfest debut, and they'll hit the stage at 1:00 PM. Promoted once again by Chelsie Parayko, this year's Stage 2 action is FREE & ALL AGES as usual, and check the above links for more details on the lineup and festival proper!

It's great to see the Second Stage back for an 11th go-around in 2016, and fans should like the varied lineup of local original talent, with only Gnaeus and The Wild Iris returning from last year! I'm unsure if the Second Stage will ever return to being a two-day event, but I like the continued focus on all-local acts, and more punk and hard rock acts than the event had before being "redirected", so don't miss out on all of the Stage 2 action by the Art Gallery TOMORROW! For a preview, here's Gnaeus live last year!

Lastly for this weekend's previews (barring a super-late notice confirmation), the aforementioned Din & Id Iota will rock LopLops Lounge TOMORROW NIGHT at an afterparty concert following the conclusion of this year's Stage 2! This marks the second straight year that LopLops hosts an afterparty featuring two opening bands from the Second Stage lineup, and it's great to see that LopLops (who promoted the Second Stage until the 2014 hiatus and their move to The Emergency Festival) still support the all-original stage and the bands that play it! This will be The Din's last announced concert before their CD release show at The Tech next month, while it will be Id Iota's first non-Rotaryfest set since their own CD release party from April, so if you want to see the guys indoors, at night, or with an adult beverage, be at LopLops tomorrow for the afterparty! There's a $5 cover for this 19+ show, which starts at 9:00 PM. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's The Din live!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Local pop punk solo project Anthems vs. Oceans (formerly For July) have unveiled their first new song since the name change via their Soundcloud page! Entitled "I Won't Leave You", it's an acoustic folk-influenced piece that showcases a different side of Dave Hunter's musical ability, and it's well done for it's style, so give it (and more) a listen above!
  • The third studio track from local hard rock quartet Long Shot's upcoming self-titled debut EP can now be heard at their Bandcamp page! It's for their song "El Camino", and while the EP currently lists an asking price of $4, it's not clear how many more songs will be added to final track listing, if any (perhaps "Long Goodbye"?) Stay tuned for details on the official release when announced, and listen to the current tracks above!
  • In a Facebook posting from May that we missed on here at the time, local death/thrash metal trio Pillory revealed that they will apparently begin recording their first full length studio album in the fall with producer Jamie Vincent (AlgomA), presumably at Six, Two, Oh. This would follow their 2013 thrash EP "Cringe At The Cross", though their current material has far more of a death metal influence. Hopefully these plans are maintained, and stay tuned for more from Pillory in due course!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for our review of Thursday's Iskra show next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Big Brother & Gnaeus), Highway 63 Concert Previews, And More!!

On this Friday morning, we have some teaser information on an upcoming album release, previews of this weekend's remaining hard rock shows (that are previously announced!), and LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for later this summer, so read on below for what you should know!

Local post-punk quartet Gnaeus and hard rock quartet Long Shot will join forces for a concert at LopLops Lounge on Friday, July 22nd! Fresh off of their Rotaryfest Stage 2 set next weekend, Gnaeus should be in good form as they draw ever closer to the release of their debut CD "Meditations" (more on that at post's end), so look for the guys to deliver a fun set at LopLops in two weeks' time! Similarly, Long Shot have been busy in the studio towards their own debut EP, so much so that this will actually be their first public concert of the year, and if I'm not mistaken, their LopLops debut. The Dawes, Nathan, and Jeremy are a very promising unit, and should leave a good impression on the 22nd! No finite word though on if one band, both, or neither will have their CDs out by then, though as of this writing, neither are publically tying the show to an official release. Admission will be $5 for this 19+ concert, which has an advertised 9:00 PM start time.

For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! It's great to see Long Shot back on stage again, let alone with their friends and former battle of the bands rivals in Gnaeus (you may recall that ex-drummer Brendan Garlick filled in for Jeremy at a Long Shot show last year too.) Keep this show in mind for later this month, and stay tuned for more on Gnaeus' debut CD!

Next up, Toronto "ska-core" trio Big Brother will make their local concert debut for what's being called "Ska Saturdae" at The New American Pub on Saturday, August 20th! This fun yet hard hitting outfit have been making waves with their fusion of hardcore punk and ska, and should appeal to multiple fans at The New A next month, so don't bypass Big Brother's energetic attack! At least one local opener is to be announced, and while personal Facebook postings by promoters have hinted at a specific band with one more to be locked down, nothing has been publically stated yet. We'll keep you posted! Promoted by Six, Two, Oh. (in a rare Saturday nighter for their New A bookings), there will be a $7 cover in effect, as well as a 19+ age limit and a 9:00 PM start time. This should be a solid time for ska and hardcore fans, so visit the official Facebook event page for full current details!

Also, here's our last of this weekend's concert previews (at least, for shows that have been announced as of this writing), as Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63 will return to The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Notably the first concerts plugged by the Monkey's Uncle successors on their Facebook page since February (though they have played steadily in the area in the interim), this weekend's shows should be full of hard and classic rock favourites, so be sure not to miss Highway 63 at the Soo Kewadin tonight and/or tomorrow! And remember, we'll see them back at St. Ignace's Kewadin in month's end. As usual, there's a 9:00 PM start time, no announced cover charge, and a 21+ age limit for each night. Check the above links for more details, and here's Highway 63 live!

Finally, let's close with a new preview video from the aforementioned Gnaeus, who posted this on their Facebook page on Wednesday to tease fans as to the cover and booklet of their debut CD "Meditations"! Featuring a rotating version from a computer program of the apparently 4 page booklet (the inside has band pictures), the big reveal here is that the album cover is not the image used in the Rotaryfest program, despite that being square and featuring the album's title. No word on if that was ever seriously intended to be the cover art, but the video confirms that the original front cover (unveiled when the CD was still called "Loomings") has survived despite the name change, though with two changes: the name, obviously, and rendering Gnaeus' name in all lowercase rather than all capitals. I did a mock-up of what the cover will look like, as you can see here, and while it's not exact, it's nice to get some more finite word about it!

The back of the booklet appears to show that "Meditations" has nine songs, though the angle and size of the album preview on their computer doesn't allow me to 100% verify the track listing. I believe I can make out "The Edge" and "An Exercise In Self Awareness", but they're the only ones I can name with relative certainty. With that said, it's a nice teaser, and proof that the album is indeed coming, so give it a look below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes shortly! Thanks everyone!
