A Concert Cancellation, Mikey & His Uke's Newest Covers, And More!!

I hope everyone is staying warm and off the roads on this very snowy Friday! Regarding this weekend's concert previews, the ones covered yesterday appear to be on as scheduled, but we do have a cancellation to note, as local hard rock quartet Half Past are not playing at Shooters Downstairs Lounge tomorrow, as per an update to their Facebook page's post about the concert this morning. A reason for the postponement was not announced, but Shooters itself is opening late today. The weather forecast could be to blame, I don't 100% know, but Half Past have promised that there is a "new date to come". Hopefully all is well with the guys, and we'll let you know when this show is re-booked! While there have been a few other announced concert cancellations (especially tonight), hard rock shows covered in yesterday's weekend concert preview post are not visibly affected. Keep tabs with the bands and venues for clarification on this weekend's shows!

Now, let's dive into a new video and more on this snow day, starting with the long awaited conclusion of local punk supergroup project Mikey & His Uke's 30th anniversary series of covers of Green Day's breakthrough album "Dookie"! It took almost two months after the previous cover to get the final song up, but the series is ending in style by tackling both the final credited song and the bonus track all in one video! For the last credited song, Bookclub frontman Mikey Hawdon (on guitar after dropping the ukelele pretense once again) is joined to play the deep cut "F.O.D." by Flatliners frontman Chris Cresswell, while Buck-O-Nine bassist Andy Plafoot handles bass for the eighth and final time here, and ex-Goldfinger drummer Darren Pfieffer returns to the kit as the house drummer of the "Dookie" series (and wearing a Toronto FC jersey for a change!) How is "F.O.D." filmed this time?

We get a little more variance visually here, as the softer acoustic opening verse is seen in monochrome, before going full colour when the song shifts into punk territory, though Chris continues playing acoustic guitar. Also, while Chris handles the opening, everyone else is seen either waiting patiently or setting up for their parts, which is cute! After "F.O.D." ends, we get to watch a sped up video of Mikey and his family putting together a jigsaw puzzle of the "Dookie" album cover while a caption scrolls across the screen thanking everyone for watching and supporting the series... but we're not done yet! The hidden bonus track on "Dookie" was "All By Myself", an acoustic song performed by drummer Tre Cool, and Mikey & His Uke didn't forget about that one! Here, Mikey takes on lead vocals and plays ukelele straight through for the only time in the "Dookie" series.

Guesting here are Vincent Hidalgo and Brad Magers from the Los Angeles punk band The Bronx and, more notably given how this cover was handled, their mariachi side project Mariachi El Bronx (and to that end, Brad is playing trumpet). No Darren here, nor any prior bassist. Two kids also join in banging pots on their heads, while Vincent plays guitar while lying on the floor. Nice little throwback to the early Mikey & His Uke covers here, with a Mexican twist, while "F.O.D." delivered the punk goods with solid vocals from Chris, so you get a good end to this lengthy series! Finally for today, I wanted to shine a spotlight on a local musician who needs help at a trying time (normally, I don't talk about musicians' personal lives here but I'll make an exception for stuff like this). As some of you may know, former Destroilet drummer Matt Waples was diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier this year that may have spread to his adrenal gland, and he is having surgery to remove the cancerous testicle next month as well as chemotherapy. He has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $8,100 to cover travel expenses to Toronto and back as well as to cover the donation of sperm to be frozen in the event that he decides to become a parent in the future. Matt's fight was covered in this Sault Star article by Jeffrey Ougler earlier this week, where he outlined his goals to start a fully fledged graphic design business (local musicians know Matt's work with Sonigraphix well from posters, logos, and merchandise).

The article has candid remarks about Matt's cancer and what he has been through this year, and he has been similarly open and honest on social media. As of this writing, $2,925 has been raised, and hopefully more comes in soon, especially given how rapidly things are changing with his condition. Matt's a good guy, a strong drummer, and a talented graphic artist, and I hope things work out optimally for his health so he can get back to living how he wants without pain and worry. Here's this month's YouTube Channel Profile, as we again shine a spotlight on a randomly selected YouTube channel whose public videos are at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, and/or punk artists and/or concerts! This month's channel takes us to another single-band offering, this time one of the most prominent local hardcore punk bands of the 2010s, so here's what you should know in this month's profile!

Owner: A member of 2009-2021 local hardcore punk band Destroilet, exact identity unclear

Channel Timeline: Launched on October 18th, 2009; Videos uploaded from the beginning of 2010 through October 2013

Channel Summary: The official YouTube channel for Destroilet, it captures their early run via five (generally short) concert videos and two uploads of songs from their 2012 self-titled album.

Why You Should Watch: Fans of Destroilet's ferocious hardcore punk attack will want to check out their content here, and while venue lighting isn't always ideal, you do get a sense of what made them special to subgenre fans of the era! Note that the channel was not used after 2013, prior to the release of the "Fed Up!" split, their brief 2014-15 run as a sextet, and their late-era slowdown in gigs, but numerous fan videos from their mid-late 2010s run can be found elsewhere, and drummer Matt Waples would later post songs of theirs on his own YouTube channel.

DESTROILET - TENNESSEE DRIVER: The first four videos on Destroilet's channel come from their debut live set in December 2009, when they opened for the similarly named local/Toronto hardcore punk quartet Detroit (fronted by their future co-vocalist Brenton Ellis) at their CD release party at Coch's Corner. This was back when Coch's was located in the Days Inn on Bay Street, now the Holiday Inn Express. Destroilet were exclusively filmed here doing covers, including The Dayglo Abortions' "My Erection" and fellow locals Fistmagnet's "Evil God Hater" from a more distant filmer. Another attendee much closer to the band filmed part of GG Allin's "Murder For The Mission" and, as featured here, "Tennessee Driver" by Hank Williams III's band Assjack. Despite some tinny audio, this is good as you could expect local digital camera video from a concert 15 years ago to be, and Destroilet are already showing their intense attack at this early stage, no doubt helped by members' prior local band work!

Destroilet - Cockteaser Pleaser (4 songs): After putting out a self-titled six-song EP in April 2011, Destroilet opted to re-release it in December 2012 with six more new songs. To promote the reissue, "Eternal Fire" was posted on YouTube later that month, followed by this teaser upload of four of the seven original cuts in 2013 (it also had five covers). In order, you'll hear "Truly Infected", "R.O.Y.C.", and "Eternal Fire" again, followed by "End Me", which is the only song here that was on the original 2011 EP. Featuring Matt alongside late frontman Mike Hull, guitarists John Conway and Christian Foisy, and bassist Adam Larocque, this sampler is a good way to introduce new fans to their studio material, especially with "Truly Infected" leading off! All sixteen of Destroilet's released studio songs, including the four new cuts on 2015's "Fed Up!" split, can be heard on YouTube here and here.

Destroilet - Eternal Fire: The last and most popular video on this channel is a music video for the aforementioned "Eternal Fire", as filmed/edited by Fred Kember with the 705 Video Magazine. This was filmed across multiple cameras when Destroilet opened for The Bunchofuckingoofs at the former Roosevelt Hotel (now Jay's Piston Broke Pub) in August 2013, before being uploaded on Devil's Night that year. While the vocals aren't always lined up with the studio track, this was well put together and captures Destroilet at their relative local peak nicely with a raucous crowd! Of course, Mike was in his element here too with another intense performance with constant motion, and he is definitely still missed in the local scene!

R.I.P. Mike Hull

I'd like to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Destroilet frontman Mike Hull, who passed away yesterday, as per numerous postings on Facebook. Any extra details on arrangements are not visibly out yet, we will let you know more when available & appropriate. SMS readers will best know Mike from his work with Destroilet from their 2009 inception through to their final set at the Joni Radford memorial concert at The Rockstar Bar in March 2019, with Mike featuring on their three CD releases along the way. Details on Mike's local music work before Destroilet is not in high quantities online, but he was always a lively presence on stage in Destroilet's early-mid 2010s heyday! I remember that he was always hard to get photos of in concert, owing to his stage presence and constant motion that was tailor made for hardcore punk. I do wish that they turned up his microphone live more though.

Off stage, Mike was a good guy and a proud father, and he was always kind to me when we interacted at shows. Losing him at this time of year sucks, especially with Christmas less than a month away, so our thoughts are absolutely with his family right now, and we will let you know more on services or possible tributes when they go public. R.I.P. Mike! 

More New Videos, Plus An Inactive Band Note!!

Hopefully everyone survived that cold snap in the Soo area over the last few days! Hopefully this will help warm everyone up, as we have another SMS post to check out today as this month moves along at a glacial pace. We mostly have some new videos to put the spotlight on, but there is a band moved to our inactive band links within, so here's what you should know!

Here's an interesting find, namely a clip of inactive local/Toronto indie/punk band Treble Charger playing "Sick Friend Called" on the CBC variety show Rita & Friends circa 1996! This was uploaded in October by YouTube user Uncool Dispatch, who previously posted this video of Greig & Trevor being interviewed on MuchMusic in 1997. If you're too young to remember it, Rita & Friends was hosted by the late country singer Rita MacNeil from 1994-1997, and while it is odd to see her introducing Treble Charger, it does show that she wanted to spotlight a wide array of music! The video quality is very rough (was this making the tape trading rounds?), but the audio's alright, and it's neat seeing an early video like this, especially given that Greig's on lead vocals for an indie-era song.

If you can get past the visual quality, this is a prime early performance from Treble Charger that surely gave them some much needed exposure to a national TV audience! Give it a look below, and do check out Uncool Dispatch's channel for much more videos of Canadian TV appearances from 1990s rock and alternative musicians, as there's a lot to see there!

Next up, I have moved local hardcore punk quintet Destroilet to our inactive band links due to a year's inactivity. The band's last public update (a picture on their Facebook page) went up one year ago yesterday, and while the pandemic is acknowledged, Destroilet updates had dramatically slowed down in the late 2010s, with the band playing just two public sets in the past six years, most recently at the Joni Radford memorial concert in March 2019. One of the most enduring original local punk bands of the new millennium, Destroilet launched in 2009, uniting five scene veterans into a fast & blistering old school package that fans will have seen open for the likes of Random Killing, The Rebel Spell, and The Dayglo Abortions at concerts through 2015, as well as releasing a self-titled EP in 2011, expanded into a full length CD in 2012, and participating in 2015's "Fed Up!" split alongside The Ripcordz and Jack Spades.

Jam space renovations, members' personal lives, and the pandemic haven't helped Destroilet's concert frequency since the mid-2010s, but given their sporadic usage of social media to post band photos and sell t-shirts, hopefully they're not 100% done and that we'll see the guys tear up the stage once again when things return to normal! Best of luck to Mike, John, Christian, Adam, Matt, and Brent in the interim, they've all been missed!

Also, let's belatedly cover some more of local/Thompson, Manitoba alt-hard rock musician Mike Haggith's recent appearances/reviews in Thomas Christ's YouTube series You Rock!, where the host reviews songs by independent musicians in a 2+ hour live stream, Studio Live Today style! Mike debuted in the series with song reviews in episodes #11, #12, and #13 late last year, but he also popped up in episode #14 at the 57:44 mark, with Thomas checking out "Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost" from "Bridges", positively complimenting the song for it's professionalism, slow burn, and overall talent, even plugging Mike's interview with Pete Johns. As it turns out, former Bizotic frontman Brad Griffith (a.k.a. Gortium85) recommended Mike submit songs for Thomas to feature on air, which seems to have worked out! Embedded below is episode #15 from last month. 

In Mike's fifth straight appearance, his song reviewed was "The Best You Never Had", this time from 2020's "If Ever Comes The Day", and you can check that out 1:16:07 into the lengthy video. Thomas also liked this song for it's 1980s/modern hybrid sound and production, though you can tell that Thomas has his limits as a critic, as he didn't know who Michael Hutchence (INXS' late frontman) was when a viewer complimented Mike's vocals. Solid work all around, so give both episodes a watch, and look for local indie band Man Feelings in episode #15 as well! We'll have more from Mike soon!

Finally, here's a surprise upload of an old song by former No Arrow frontman Dann Pichette's inactive solo project! Posted to his YouTube channel last month, this is The Dann Pichette Multi-Track Recording Extravaganza's song "Swass", which has been up on their Soundclick page since 2012 or so (given that this isn't a new recording, I won't move the Extravaganza to our active links unless we hear that Dann's working on new material). As I thought last year when Dann first linked me to these songs, "Swass" reminds me of a Primus demo, albeit one that cascades into chaos, and it's a silly but well performed number for what it is! Give it a listen below!

Recaps Of Episodes #5 & 6 Of Metal Morpheus On The Borderline!!

Happy Labour Day, everyone! Let's take a deep dive into two recent episodes of Metal Morpheus, the weekly metal-centric series on local internet radio station The Borderline, starting with episode #5 from August 1st, which is all about the New Wave of British Heavy Metal! Running for just under an hour, the episode begins with host Josh Amendola explaining how the genre/movement came into being in the late 1970s, before introducing Motorhead, giving lots of historical context for their early years and formation. Their played song is "Stone Dead Forever" (0:45), but not the studio copy, rather the bonus live recording from a later re-issue of "Bomber". Next up, Josh showcases the legendary Iron Maiden via their Di'Anno-era classic "Phantom of the Opera" (10:05), before moving on to Saxon, from whom he plays their song "747 (Strangers In The Night)" (17:55), and Savage, who barely get an intro for their song "Ain't No Fit Place" (23:00).

The first half of the episode closes with the more obscure but theatrical band Cloven Hoof, courtesy of their eponymous song (28:40). Josh next spotlights Tygers of Pan Tang via their classic song "Insanity" (36:20), before looking at another contemporary band with a self-titled song to play on air, namely Angel Witch (43:00). We get into more extreme territory next via black metal pioneers Venom, who get a little more talking up than some preceding bands, with their song played here being "Don't Burn The Witch" (46:35). The last British band on offer is Satan (yes, that was their name), and after discussing the band & the misconceptions about witches over their intro track "Into The Fire", Josh plays their song "Trial By Fire" (51:15). The episode closes with it's weekly local band, and they are.... Destroilet? Josh plays their song "Bamberg Witch Prison" (56:35) from 2015's "Fed Up!" split.

Josh links Destroilet (a hardcore punk band) into NWOBHM based on their "quick sound", but to me, that's a bit of a stretch, as fun and intense as they are. Granted, local bands that are purely inspired by/sound like NWOBHM acts aren't plentiful (unless you want to dip into hair metal-influenced bands like Late & Loud or Amethyst), but if they have to be an act with a studio album, maybe something from Tym Morrison's "Solo Project" CD? If you expanded out to bands with just live videos, Project 421 and/or their successors Re:Born would be ideal. Still a solid throwback episode with Josh's on-air personality and energy always increasing, and though the context on some bands was lacking, this gave a good spotlight on lesser known acts!

While we're here, let's also look at episode #6 of Metal Morpheus from August 8th, where Josh spotlighted death metal! A little longer than the previous week, he begins by playing "Jewel Throne" by pioneering extreme metal legends Celtic Frost (00:45), before playing Possessed's song "The Exorcist"  (5:55), inspired by the movie of the same name. Next, Josh looks at the legendary Death, with their on-air track being "Scream Bloody Gore" (11:10), with some good context about what the late Chuck Schuldiner had to do to get the band off the ground. Three more Florida-based bands are next, including Atheist, from whom we hear "Mother Man" (17:00), and just for casual listeners, note that Atheist are largely not on Spotify. They are followed by Morbid Angel, via their song "Immortal Rites" (22:15), with the first half closing via Deicide and their song "Carnage In The Temple Of The Damned" (26:55).

Josh next introduces the highest selling death metal band of all time, Cannibal Corpse, from whom he plays their classic song "Hammer Smashed Face" (31:05). Afterwards, we get Obituary's fittingly named "Slowly We Rot" (35:30), followed by Cynic' jazz fusion-influenced song "Textures" (40:15). This episode's local content follows next, courtesy of dormant local death metal favourites The Bear Hunters, whose song played on-air is the title track of their sophomore album from last year, "The Dead Testament" (44:45). We do get some information on the band & album afterwards, but it is odd that Josh only credits the guys by their first names. The episode closes with two of Josh's favourite death metal bands, including Autopsy playing "Severed Survival" (52:05) and Suffocation playing "Effigy of the Forgotten" (56:30). Another solid episode, helped by Josh's love of death metal being plainly obvious!

While Josh didn't wax poetic as much as he did for Motorhead in episode #5, you get a sense that Josh really liked all the bands he was talking about this time, and again, his jumps in emotion and intensity when hyping up bands/songs is always welcomed! Our Recap Of Episode #4 Of Metal Morpheus On The Borderline!!

Let's do a deep dive into episode #4 of local internet radio station The Borderline's weekly metal-centric series Metal Morpheus today, as host Josh Amendola looked at Canadian thrash metal bands in the July 25th installment! Remember, new episodes premiere on-air every Sunday at 9:00 PM, with episode #9 scheduled for the 29th before being posted to check out on-demand. As before, episodes are genre-centric, but this is the first time that Metal Morpheus has explicitly focused on domestic talent rather than international ones. Maybe it's too obvious to talk about Metallica and Slayer and such for a thrash episode? For presumed ease of access, the episode's on-demand streaming page now includes the track listing for what's played on air, but there are some minor mistakes which I'll correct here when needed. For the sake of avoiding repetition, I'll include timestamps in brackets for each song rather than thinking of new ways to say when segments begin.

Episode #4 begins it's one hour runtime (after the busy opening song) with Quebec thrash metal legends Voivod, who Josh does give some key information about re: their musical inspirations. Two songs of theirs are played on air, including "Nuclear War" (0:45) and "War & Pain" (9:20), with a tribute to late guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour" tucked in between. The next segment dives into Ottawa speed metal icons Annihilator, who also get two songs featured, including "The Fun Palace" (14:40) & "Never, Neverland" (20:35). The first half of the episode concludes with a segment on Toronto metal pioneers (and multiple time local headliners) Anvil, who get just one song, but it's their most famous one, namely "Metal On Metal" (26:20). For the second half, we dive into the local scene by way of inactive local metal band Pillory, who Josh briefly played with, but the focus here is on their 2012-2014 thrash era.

Specifically, Josh plays "Shattered By War" (30:30) from Pillory's 2014 EP "Cringe At The Cross", which is definitely underrated, especially given the band's later shift to death metal. Josh also gives some nice props to original guitarist/songwriter Andres Duchesne, who passed away in 2013, a year before the EP came out. Before moving on, Josh did mention that Pillory are still active and are still planning to release a new EP called "Angst of Existence" (named for the song of the same name), but this has not been publically confirmed by the band proper at press time. If you're curious, Pillory have not played live since opening for Black Crown Initiate two years ago this month, and have not posted any Facebook updates since 2018, but if the band proper shows a public sign of life, we'll let you guys know! Local fans get double the money's worth here though, as hardcore punk quintet Destroilet are up next!

Presumably considered fitting for this episode given the common bleed-over between hardcore punk and crossover thrash, Josh doesn't give Destroilet a similarly detailed introduction, but he does play two songs of theirs at this juncture, including "R.O.Y.C." (38:50) and "Eternal Fire" (41:35), both from their 2012 self-titled album. Note that Pillory are given an accidental credit for the former on the episode's page on The Borderline's website, while the latter song is erroneously named "External Fire" there and in the episode itself. Ottawa thrash legends Exciter get played next via their song "Violence & Force" (44:05), before looking at contemporary Toronto thrash band Razor's song "Fast & Loud" (48:20). Entering the home stretch, Josh looks at defunct British Columbia speed/power metal band 3 Inches of Blood, themselves former local headliners, and their on-air track is "Deadly Sinners" (52:45).

After signing off and thanking everyone, Josh plays one more Destroilet song to close the episode, namely "Lifer" (57:55) from 2015's "Fed Up!" split with The Ripcordz and fellow locals Jack Spades. Another entertaining episode of Metal Morpheus here with lots of fast-paced, technical Canadian metal on display, and Josh is definitely getting more and more comfortable as a host, especially with how his enthusiastic intensity jumps when selling each band/song! This month's pick gives us some prominent extreme metal content from the local scene eight years back, so here's what you should know!

Channel Timeline: Launched on April 11th, 2013; Videos posted from May 31st of that year until June 8th, 2014

Channel Summary: The official YouTube channel for Boyd's inactive film production company, it's contents are primarily devoted to local musicians (mostly metal ones) that were active in 2013, which he either worked with or hosted shows featuring. While primarily of live concert footage, uploaded videos also include two interviews, a jam session clip of a private BeeFMouTH reunion, and teaser commercials for two AlgomA concerts.
 
Why You Should Watch: Local metal fans will be most interested in 62nd Chamber Productions' channel, and it captures a lot of the highlights of the scene from eight years ago! Hard to believe it's been that long since these were filmed. However, the channel has not been visibly used since 2014, preceding 62nd Chamber's website being taken down in 2016. As well, the channel does not include 62nd Chamber's short film work from the early 2010s, most notably their short film "The Last Strand".

GIWAKWA - Iron Lung --- from a LXII bootleg currently in production: The first concert video here is of inactive local death/doom metal quartet Giwakwa playing their original song "Iron Lung" when they opened for Sleep When You're Dead at The Oddfellows Hall in May 2013. The video title hints that this was from a "bootleg currently in production", but whatever that was alluding to never got publically released. Despite a green post-production filter and a low frame-rate, this video captures Josh, Chris, Nolan, and Chris at their usual brutality during this brief run, and hopefully the personal teasers about a Giwakwa reunion of some kind do come to fruition!

 

 

Sabrina Strange interviews The Bear Hunters: The most popular videos on 62nd Chamber Prouctions' channel are two interviews conducted by late local metal musician Sabrina Pelchat (a.k.a. Sabrina Strange), specifically with AlgomA and (as featured here) The Bear Hunters, a video which garnered over 1,200 views. Posted in October 2013 in advance of their set at The Big Loonie Bus Show, Sabrina asks the band (minus Josh) about their musical influences, songwriting, album release plans, experiences on the road, among other topics, before closing with a jam room performance of their song "Servitude". Both the interview and song are well done, despite some abrupt cuts, and this is a must-watch for Bear Hunters fans! Note that Sabrina's first public interview (with The Cretin from The Dayglo Abortions) was not posted on this channel, and has since been taken down anyway.

DESTROILET live @ Bark at the Loon I: Four videos on the 62nd Chamber channel come from The Big Loonie Bus Show, a special one-off concert held at La Cucina (underneath Bucci's Place) in Echo Bay by AlgomA's promotion company Oh! Right Arm Promotions, with a bus being rented to get fans unable/unwilling to take the 40 minute drive there and back. With the exception of AlgomA (presumably as band members were the ones manning the camera), every band was filmed across multiple songs, including The Bear Hunters, Crimson Crusade, mystery act Telephone & Address, and as featured here, hardcore punk quintet Destroilet, whose black & white video captures 37 minutes of their usual fury. It's always been hard for me to identify individual songs in Destroilet sets, but lots of familiar originals and covers can be seen here, and everyone puts in a blistering performance!
