Defunct Local Band Profile Series: This Is Your Band On Drugs

It's now time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile, our monthly spotlight of randomly selected local metal, hard rock, and/or punk bands from the past for current readers! I had originally projected a double profile this month due to what I thought was minimal surviving information on the first band, but it turns out that I underestimated them despite their relatively short presence as a live act! As such, the second band we had picked (mid-2000s all-female hard rock band Apocrytha) will lead off a double band profile next month. That said, this month's selection definitely made a mark on the all ages metal scene while they lasted, buoyed by their very familiar guitarist, so here's what you should know!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Is Your Band On Drugs

Genre: Grindcore/Experimental

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Members: (Like other contemporary 1-2 member local extreme metal bands from the early-mid 2010s, This Is Your Band On Drugs did not have a permanent bassist or drummer, and they used a drum machine for percussion in their 2014 live gigs, but guest musicians weren't uncommon.)

Nick Burns, vocals/percussion
Chase Wigmore (Awokest, The Strange Coyotes), guitar/backing vocals

Audio/Video: This Is Your Band On Drugs released a self-titled demo EP featuring over a dozen original death metal songs, and while it has been posted online for free, it was released in physical copies in 2014 through Blood Shed Productions for a paltry $1. The band also posted a very short jam video on their YouTube channel at the time, while I filmed them twice at May 2014 concerts at The Oddfellows Hall that you can see on our Facebook page. Here's Chase & Nick playing "Black Metal Is Too Hard" & "Get Fucked In The Sewage" (they titled it, don't shoot the messenger!)

Info/Analysis: Though Nick & Chase used the This Is Your Band On Drugs name in a busking setting as far back as June 2013, the band as we knew it only debuted in May 2014 via sets at that month's Fuck The Facts show & the fourth annual Swampstravaganza, plus a Moose Lodge gig, notably all being as replacements for an advertised band that dropped out. After a work stint out of town for Chase, a planned return at Blood Shed Productions' annual Devil's Night show that year did not occur, and T.I.Y.B.O.D. are presumed to have fell inactive by 2015. They were advertised to return at a Blood Shed-promoted all-local concert at The New American Pub in February 2019, but they also did not play at that event, and have not been heard from since. This Is Your Band On Drugs fit in perfectly with the minimalist local death metal crowd in the 2010s, and stood out with their freewheeling jam style, intensity, and Chase's strong guitar work, but Nick could often be hard to hear. Follow Chase's prolific solo music to see what he's up to nowadays!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! As promised, we'll finally look at Apocrytha in this series on or around August 10th, but as I know they won't have enough content for a solo installment, I randomly picked a Sault Michigan band to round things out with, namely mid-2010s acoustic hard rock group The Creepy Little Coffee People! Look for that next month as well, plus more news on the site by Tuesday! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Archelon), A New Local Punk Band, And More!!

Alright, we do have one more news post before TONIGHT'S Ripcordz concert, and it includes some assorted recent news & notes, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT to go with an already stacked Halloween concert lineup, and first, a new local band to take note of, so here's what you need to know!

We have a new band to add to our active links, and they are The Red & Black, a new punk/grunge duo that are officially credited as hailing from Garden River. The newest in the increasing slate of two man bands in the area, their lineup features Telephone & Address founder Chris Shoust on vocals & guitar alongside talented local pianist Damjan Binda (a.k.a. Spider Fingerz) on drums. Information on The Red & Black is minimal so far, and it's unclear if they plan to transfer to the live stage, but two original songs are now online via their Bandcamp page, where both can be streamed and even bought if you so chose. One's named "The Army Song" (complete with repeated chorus shouts of "Left! Right!"), and the other is called "Talk Talk Talk". Both are reminiscent of Chris' recent Telephone & Address originals, just with guitar instead of bass and a live drummer rather than programmed drums, so fans of "Need Not Apply" will be right at home with The Red & Black! Stay tuned for more on The Red & Black as we hear it!

Next up, here's another LOCAL CONCERT ALERT concerning the Halloween season, as Heavy North Entertainment are putting on a second annual Devil's Night concert at The Oddfellows Hall on Thursday, October 30th! Last year's Devil's Night show wasn't the first under the H.N.E. name, but it launched Tyler St. Amour's promotional run at formal venues, so it's cool to see him turn this into an annual event! Though with such an extensive lineup, I'm surprised we're only getting just over two weeks notice. Subtitled "Local Mash-Up" (Oddzfest reference?), this show currently has 12 announced acts, and though Sudbury metal quintet Archelon (who have played with local bands at recent events in Cochrane & Spanish) are the nominal headliners, much of the advance press revolves around the local homecoming of experimental solo musician Chase Wigmore & his death metal duo This Is Your Band On Drugs, neither of which have been seen in town in 5 months due to Chase's out of town work commitments.

It's great to see Chase back in town, and his irreverent and very talented music should be welcomed back in both his solo and T.I.Y.B.O.D. sets on Devil's Night! The lineup will also include three bands with Paperclip Productions ties, including grunge/alternative notables Haggith, classic metal rockers Project 421 (in their first show since the departure of singer Curtis McKenzie), and local doom/punk trio The Revolution (formerly the second Brutaly Fatal), while the heavy portion of the lineup is rounded out with Blood Shed Productions goregrind acts Crucify The Whore & Rotopsy, and former Strange Coyotes bassist James Watterworth (credited under his Delusionair Lionhair alias) in a solo set. Timeslots for all of the above artists are to be determined, but this second Devil's Night show will kick off at 5:00 PM with a three-way set of local rappers (the first time H.N.E. has booked that genre at a non-house party), and the rappers in question are Phat Boii, Miracle Man, and Mikey Thomas, so keep their joint set in mind if you're coming early for some hip-hop!

For reference & continuity sake, every official performer from last year's Devil's Night show is back this year, with the exception of Crimson Crusade (who went on hiatus after last year's show) and The Bear Hunters. This ALL AGES concert kicks off with the rappers at 5:00 PM, and admission will be $5 in advance (details to be announced) and $7 at the door, which is a fantastic value! For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! I've said it before, the Halloween season is the peak of the metal & punk concert calendar during the fall season, and this is continued proof of that, so don't bypass Devil's Night at The Oddfellows Hall during your seasonal concert plans! Stay tuned for updates!

Finally, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Bear Hunters guitarist/Beaumont Avenue bassist Mitch Sirie is again looking to start a side metal band project, this time one with an emphasis on natural, earthy songwriting and diverse unpredictable musical quality. He'll have time and jam space to start early next year, so if you're interested, message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post on Thursday!
  • In a comment reply on that very same Musicians Wanted group post, Giwakwa drummer Chris Thompson mentioned that the band (who is indeed still alive) is looking for a new singer and bassist, presumably still due to Josh Stephney & Nolan Rainville's out of town work commitments. Mitch indicated clear interested in one or both positions, but if you're interested in trying out for either role yourself, message Chris at this link!
  • After a three week break from studio work, Haggith drummer Mike Haggith revealed on his Facebook page on Wednesday that he is working on a new studio album called "The Warinside" (the missing space appears to be intentional), and though it deals with "relevant recent happenings", there's no timetable for it's release as of yet, and what this means for his announced third compilation album, the re-release of "Neighbourhood Watch", and the indefinitely postponed "The Tower" isn't clear yet. Get more info (including the cover art) at the above links!

That's all for today, but we'll see you guys at The Algonquin Pub TONIGHT for The Ripcordz! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Bear Hunters), New Blood Shed Productions Songs, And More!!

With Rotaryfest previews, this month's poll, and punk band features populating most of the next few days, let's fill this post up with news before we get too backlogged, so what's on tap? New song uploads from a local independent label, plus some assorted recent stories, but first, here's a big LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next week!

Local death metal favourites The Bear Hunters will make their Rednecks Saloon debut with a headlining concert there on Friday, July 25th! Last seen in Cochrane at the Touch of Death festival last month, this will be their first local concert appearance since the Swampstravaganza two months ago, but next week's show will be big for another reason, as relocated rhythm guitarist Josh Stephney will be back with the band for the first time in 2014 and just the second time since he moved to Brampton last summer! Awesome to see him back, and to hear their songs in the optimal form as intended! No, I don't know if this will coincide with an Oddzfest 2, though I know some readers are hoping for one. As for the venue, the old Nicolet Tavern may seem like an odd location for a death metal show, but remember that lead guitarist Mitch Sirie plays here often with Beaumont Avenue and with their weekly Urawk karaoke series, so it fits fine that way! Two local openers are to be named for this show, which will have a later 11:00 PM start time, no announced cover charge, and a 19+ age limit.

For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! If you've missed The Bear Hunters, don't miss this hard hitting death metal concert next weekend! Sadly, I'll can't go because I have to be up early the next morning working at a garage sale, but make sure to go and give Josh a great welcome home! For clarity's sake, there has been no statements about The Bear Hunters' CD release occurring next week, which they had teased for a July show. Stay tuned for updates on this concert as they come in!

Next up, local goregrind label Blood Shed Productions have uploaded a bunch of new material to their YouTube channel over the past 4 days, so what's there now? The uploads include the full album upload of flagship band Crucify The Whore's "Welcome To Earth" demo, and a remastered version of grind duo Rotopsy's song "Let Us Rot", which will satisfy label fans' tastes for goregrind action, and C.T.W. are showing some nice progression on newer material, but I won't embed either video here due to cover art that some readers may find offensive. The uploads also include two of the creative Chase Wigmore's experimental solo songs, but for metalheads, Blood Shed Productions did upload 4 songs from his metal duo project This Is Your Band On Drugs' free demo into the video below! Tracks 7-10 on the 14 song release which can be downloaded here, they are (in order) "Rise of the Battletoad", "Behold Pukeman", the extremely short "Get Yer Groove On", and "Six Lines Over The Line", so how do these sound?

The production quality is still raw, and both Chase & Nick Burns' vocals are not loud enough on average, but the intense creative spirit from their live concerts is clearly there, with both brutal and imaginative moments throughout! Check out these four T.I.Y.B.O.D. songs below!

Lastly for Blood Shed Productions' new YouTube postings is this 13 second original song from label owner Tyler "Ringsnaps" Gibson's cybergrind solo project Malignant Neoplasm! Strangely named "Licking The Sores Of Someone With Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis" (which goes along with their medical conditions theme), the track is what it is, an effects-laden track that combines techno effects and growling for it's ultra-short length. Not for everyone, but give this song a listen below if you want!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter stories from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band or event name:

  • Vancouver technical death metal quintet Archspire have dropped out of the Heavy North Entertainment all ages show at The Oddfellows Hall on August 3rd, as they are postponing their Canadian tour to join the Summer Slaughter Canada Club Tour with The Faceless and other bands, as per promoter Tyler St. Amour on the Facebook event page yesterday. Disappointing, but a big opportunity for them, so hopefully their new tour goes awesome, and stay tuned for updates as to the local show on August 3rd!
  • As The Bear Hunters are playing at The Rednecks Saloon next Friday, it's safe to assume that guitarist Mitch Sirie's concert with Beaumont Avenue at the same venue that night (which was previously announced at this link) is now cancelled, but until we hear otherwise, I believe that the former Suicide Kings are still playing at the former Nicolet next Saturday. If we hear differently though, we'll let you guys know!
  • I've regrettably deleted the link for the former Roosevelt Hotel metal nights from our "Other Local Metal Links" due to the recent closure of it's Facebook (and only online) page. The Thursday metal concert series ran for 47 installments under three promoters from November 2010-July 2012, outlasting a short lived punk series there, and preceding a Heavy Thursday series cut short by The Rosie's transformation to Reggie's West. I wish the page wouldn't have been deleted, but cherish the memories of the Rosie metal nights, it was a great run!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews, more defunct punk band features, and more soon! Thanks everyone!

New Videos & More Sault Ontario Updates!!

For just the second time in our last ten posts, we have a post focused mostly on Sault Ontario news and updates (entirely in this case), so if our Canadian readers have felt neglected, this should help matters! Today, we have a new YouTube song posting and more assorted notes from recent days, but let's get things started with Haggith drummer and prolific local solo musician Mike Haggith, who posted a new concert video onto his YouTube channel yesterday, courtesy of his rare solo concert appearance at the fourth annual Sewer Swampstravaganza at The Oddfellows Hall on May 10th! Filmed by bandmate Daniel Horton, this is of Mike playing his creatively titled original "This Potato May Be Used As A Flotation Device" from his newest album "A Place Of Our Own", and it's well filmed from the center of the crowd, capturing one of Mike's more aggressive recent originals! Remember though, Mike used backing tracks that he played himself to fill in the non-vocal/guitar gaps. Check out Mike's new video below, and don't miss our likely review of "A Place Of Our Own" this month!

Next up, here's the latest from local experimental death metal duo This Is Your Band On Drugs! In their first Facebook page post since a teased "album" recording session on May 18th, singer/guitarist Chase Wigmore said that "I'm still being a carny. See ya guys in October", referencing his current job with a travelling fair. Hopefully that's going well for him, and we look forward to some new T.I.Y.B.O.D. activity in the fall! In the meantime however, the band's label Blood Shed Productions posted a YouTube copy of the band's original "Convictions" onto their YouTube channel on Saturday, as originally featured in this free download from last month. The production quality isn't fantastic, but the creative intensity still shines through, and while not for everyone, there's a clear audience for it! Check out "Convictions" below, and keep an eye out for more from This Is Your Band On Drugs this fall!

Finally for today, here's six assorted shorter news stories from the last while, and all are from Sault Ontario! As usual, these are in alphabetical order by band, venue, or series name:

  • On Friday, local death metal notables The Bear Hunters updated fans on their Facebook page as to the current status of their planned debut CD "Eternal Hibernation", saying that production values will be raw and not overly polished, but cited that this can very much be an aesthetic choice. YouTube sample uploads were also teased, so keep an eye out, and don't miss them in Cochrane next weekend!
  • A new local bar and concert venue named Dana's Bar & Grill just opened on Friday at 523 Queen Street East (beside Stone's Office Supply), and while a band range isn't known yet, Dana's can be seen as a spiritual successor to the closed Smack Daddy's, with both bars sharing many of the same staff. It does have a full restuarant and a retro theme, so check the above link and this SooToday article for more info, and we'll let you know if some hard rock shows get booked there!
  • Read into this however you want, but defunct local classic metal quartet Late & Loud posted a status saying "Rumours of war" onto their Facebook page last night. Are the guys teasing another reunion, or is this just a random post with another intent? Stay tuned just in case!
  • Due to fan demand, local cyber/goregrind solo project Malignant Neoplasm are now printing some limited CD copies of their newest demo "Music?", which can be seen in affiliated band pages, and are available on personal request on a "pay what you want" model. Message the band A.S.A.P. if you're interested, and stream "Music?" for free at this link!
  • Local hard rock quartet The Suicide Kings are briefly featured in Local2's video coverage of last week's 21st annual Musicfest (a.k.a. Bratwurst, Beer, and Beethoven), where they're seen for short stretches at 1:22 and 1:59 of the video, which otherwise features an interview with MC Tim Murphy and showcases other performers & vendors. Not a huge look at the guys's set, but it's well filmed, so give it a look above!
  • Also in the realm of Local2 videos (which their video host doesn't allow external embedding of on here), the newest episode of their music profile video series Tuned with Donna Hopper went up on Friday, and while it mostly features the recent Moka Only rap concert in the Soo, Donna does profile Monday's Pixo Control concert and next weekend's Public Animal\ show at The Rockstar Bar in the concert calendar segment. Give it a look (especially for hip hop fans) at this link!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for last month's poll results and this month's new poll tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

A New-Ish Local Band, A New Album Release, And New Videos!!

Before we preview this weekend's metal & hard rock concerts tomorrow, we have a stacked new news post today featuring news on a recent local hard rock CD release, a new cover from talented local hard rock musicians, and a new preview video, but first, here's info on our newest addition to our band links, so here's what you need to know!

New-ish local grindcore/experimental metal duo This Is Your Band On Drugs finally have a Facebook page, so now we can add them to our local band links! Launched as early as last June via a Sudbury busking video (though they've only began a major local concert presence this month), their lineup includes Strange Coyotes frontman and creative local solo musician Chase Wigmore on vocals & guitar alongside Nick Burns on lead vocals, with programmed drums for live concerts. If you missed them at the Fuck The Facts show, the Swampstravaganza, or yesterday at The Moose Lodge, never fear, as T.I.Y.B.O.D. are now offering a free "album" to download from Google Drive at this link! The download features 14 original songs (though curiously not "Arthurs Everywhere") and the artwork seen on your right, the songs don't have the clearest recording quality, and vocals are very muffled, but their unique grind blend comes through even still! Check everything out above and via the band's YouTube channel, and stay tuned for more updates!

Next up, we have a new paid album release to plug, as Haggith drummer Mike Haggith quietly released his 48th solo album "A Place Of Our Own" this past Saturday to coincide with his solo set at the Sewer Swampstravaganza! CD copies sold there cost $5, and will be on store shelves (presumably including The Rad Zone) within the next week. The BandCamp digital copy also went up later on Monday, though online, it's available on a "name your price" model, so it can be free if you choose, but pay for it to support Mike's music work! Possibly most surprising to note for fans of Mike's solo project is that there were no song or title changes from the originally announced track listing, though Mike told me in conversation that it was due to the conceptual nature of this release. In terms of when to expect a review of this album, I'm targeting next month for it, as this month is reserved for Jack Spades' EP, and for clarity's sake, note that I chose "A Place Of Our Own" over Mike's last unreviewed album "The Present Din" as it's heavier.

I won't comment too much on my thoughts of this new album until the review, but buy it at the above links to enjoy Mike's new solo material, and stay tuned for updates on his next solo work as it rolls in!

We'll close today's post with new videos, including this cool new cover of Alice In Chains' "Nutshell" by Skeyes of Seven bandmates Cory Murchison & Alain Fletcher! Posted onto Al's YouTube channel on Monday, this may have been a partial result of their well recieved acoustic set at Medi-Fest in March, but it's just nice to hear new media of these guys, especially as Skeyes of Seven haven't played live in over a year. This is a well done cover, though it does feel a bit slowed down compared to the original. Solid rendition, so check it out below, and hopefully we get some new updates from Skeyes of Seven soon also!

Finally for today, Sault Michigan classical metal band Theatre of Night are featured in a unique (and short) preview video for their upcoming studio work, as posted on keyboardist Craig Harrison'sYouTube channel yesterday. The video most notably features a brief stop motion animation clip of a weird looking creature playing guitar and giving the devil horns, before transitioning to close up photos of band members, and closing with credits. Sort of cryptic, but I wonder if this will be expanded on in future projects? In any event, check out this new clip below, and stay tuned for much more from their newly updated website!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

Gates Of Winter & Roosevelt Hotel Updates, Plus New Videos!!

Before we get to our review of last night's Sewer Swampstravaganza, we have a new news post today, so what's on tap? A new video from a local metal band's out of town performance last year, new studio tracks from an upcoming album, and the latest word on a recently purchased and renamed concert venue, but first, here's some long awaited updates on a prominent local metal band's next studio work!

After an almost 6 month wait for a new public update from their camp, local progressive/death metal standouts Gates of Winter finally updated their Facebook page last week to update us on their current studio work, so what should you know? According to frontman Lee Maines, the final recording process for their upcoming EP "Perihelion" is "well underway", with guitarist Bryan Belleau recently visiting back home from British Columbia to record guitar parts for the disc, while Lee also confirmed that Bryan's fiancee Melinda Cobbett will be providing some level of backing vocals. Lee noted that despite the short length of "Perihelion" and what has been revealed of the songs, he thinks the album will be a pleasant surprise for fans following the slow progress, noting that many parts and the songs' overall feel have drastically changed and been improved, before closing with "Fair winds and following seas" (perhaps a lyric sample?)

We're now over 4 years into the recording and songwriting that began shortly after their 2009 hiatus ended, and though things have been incredibly slow (especially with Lee, Steve, and Bryan living in separate provinces at the moment), the work never stopped. Indications last year suggested that 2014 will be a big year for Gates of Winter, so hopefully there's no more dry spells or delays, as their talent and presence has been missed in both studio form and on stage! Stay tuned for updates when they happen!

Next up, here's the latest on the former Roosevelt Hotel! As you may now know, it's new name is Reggie's West (as it was bought by popular downtown country bar Reggie's Tavern), and appropriate signage is now up, but what else is new and different from this Korah Road venue? According to this SooToday article by Donna Hopper from Wednesday, Reggie's West quietly (re-)opened last week, and according to new bar manager Tyler Wilson, the bar has seen extensive kitchen renovations, a facelift in the main area, and new carpeting in the past month. The article indicates that Reggie's West will have "a similar entertainment format" to the original Reggie's, including live music on weekends like usual, as well as wing nights Mondays-Wednesdays, and Sunday evening karaoke, but they haven't closed the door on hosting out of town touring acts there. Tyler is quoted in the article that promoters can contact him or the venue regarding out of town show ideas for off days, and they can be contacted for booking inquiries at their phone number ([705] 253-1411, which is the same as before.)

I hope that Reggie's West does continue to host some out of town bands, and at least try to diversify their sound and band roster from the downtown Reggie's, so it's not just a carbon copy and can have it's own unique vibe & clientele. I know many metalheads may still be skeptical or worse about the purchase, but we'll have to wait and see what happens, and it should be noted that Reggie Daigle did a great job turning around the downtown bar and ridding it of it's "divey" elements, so hopefully the old Rosie can see similar results. Stay tuned in case we hear more!

We'll close this post with some new video finds, including a tip on an early This Is Your Band On Drugs video that we hadn't seen before! Uploaded by YouTube user David Saari in June of last year, this is among a number of videos that David has shot featuring buskers and outdoor music performers in Sudbury, Ontario, though I'm not sure why the guys (credited just as "Your Band On Drugs") were there for this clip. Presumably very early in Chase Wigmore & Nick Burns' run under this name, this is of the guys playing an original song (name unclear) with Chase on vocals & guitar and Nick on percussion, and while the acoustic outdoor setting is different from what we saw last week, Chase (complete with Shit Liver shirt) fully adding his own personality and intensity to the video! No word on the identity of the man behind Nick tapping his foot along with the music though. Check this clip out below, and thanks to Mike Boychuk for the heads up!

Finally for today, Haggith drummer Mike Haggith posted the remaining two finished tracks from his upcoming studio album "A Place of Our Own" onto his YouTube channel on Friday! Though the formal paid release has not came out yet, all 6 tracks can now be streamed on YouTube for free, with the new songs being the amusingly titled "This Potato May Be Used As A Flotation Device" and (as embedded below) the 12 minute long "To Kansas: The Ballad Of K4/K5", which I assume is a sequel to his song "The Ballad of K2/K3". I'm surprised that the track listing hasn't changed since his initial word for "A Place of Our Own", as he usually radically changes it to add, remove, and re-title the included songs, but who knows if he has anything extra. As usual, we'll hold formal thoughts until our full review of this album, but check out all 6 songs at the above links, here's "To Kansas: The Ballad Of K4/K5", and stay tuned for our thoughts on Mike's rare solo set at last night's Swampstravaganza!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for our review of last night's Sewer Swampstravaganza next! Thanks everyone!

Mike Haggith & This Is Your Band On Drugs Updates, And Much More!!

Let's get some more news going on the site today, and be sure to check out our review of Sunday night's Fuck The Facts show in the post below this one! Today, we have more new media from a band at said show, new original material from an upcoming album, and more assorted recent news items, so read on below for what you need to know!

We'll start today with some more recent media from the new-ish jam/death metal duo named This Is Your Band On Drugs that we saw at the Fuck The Facts show at The Oddfellows Hall this past Sunday! While they don't have an online band page yet, they've actually had a YouTube channel since last July, with a 13 second video posted then featuring singer Nick Burns and guitarist Chase Wigmore playing an acoustic song named "Arthurs Everywhere", though it's very minimal and repetitive, and therefore, hard to comment on. Their other video is brand new though, and it's of their song "Get Fucked In The Sewage", which was actually the name of the second song we filmed at their set on Sunday. This is closer to the sound we heard at the show, and it's clearer but mostly retains the reckless jam spirit of their sound, which mixes death metal and Strange Coyotes-esque styles. If anything, Nick's vocals are more prominent and higher pitched, but check out the full song below, and stay tuned for more on This Is Your Band On Drugs!

Next up, Haggith drummer/Din frontman Mike Haggith has posted two more songs from his upcoming 48th solo album "A Place Of Our Own" onto his YouTube channel in the past week! One is the album's title track, while embedded below is the longer "Long Talk", and while we won't comment on the songs yet due to our likely full review coming in the summer, the themes are similar to his earlier preview tracks, so be sure to check them out if you're a follower of Mike's prolific solo career! Check out "Long Talk" below and more at the above links, and don't miss Mike in a rare solo set at the Sewer Swampstravaganza on Saturday!

Finally for today, here's six assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or venue name:

  • The other day, defunct regional death metal band For All That Is Lost posted a guitar track by Brook Moreau of their song "Blood Law" onto their Reverbnation page, following another similar posthumous posting of "Black Ritual" in December. This doesn't appear to indicate a band reunion (especially as drummer Kameron Nicholson recently moved out of town), but it's a solid isolated track that shows Brook's talent, so give it a look above!
  • According to a personal Facebook post by Northwest guitarist Greg Callaghan, he and Bankshot alum Lucas Schmiedendorf (a.k.a. Sal Velinus) joined local hard rock band Late Shift at their LopLops Lounge concert on Saturday, though it's not entirely clear whether they were in a specific band or just performed solo alongside. Hopefully things went well!
  • After a year of mostly sporadic activity, Blood Shed Productions cybergrind solo project Malignant Neoplasm are planning to return with new material in the near future! They are definitely one of the more unique and experimental bands on the label, so hopefully things work out as they get back to work, and keep an eye out for updates! My source is their Facebook page in recent days.
  • In news from the former Roosevelt Hotel on Korah Road, we now know that it's new name is Reggie's West, as per new signage outside of the bar. The vertical "Hotel" sign was also removed in recent renovations, though I'm not sure what work has been done to the interior. No word yet on if it's re-opened for business yet, but hopefully Reggie and crew find success with Reggie's West where the downtown location has in it's return to a full country theme!
  • Also in terms of non-public word from Saturday, recently dormant hard rock band The Side FX (featuring Papa Fogals Chair alumni Derek Turner & Mike Bird) reunited to play Mike's stag & doe at The Moose Lodge that night! No word on who their new guitarist was yet, but aside from their brief advertisement for last month's Medi-Fest, they've made no public updates since last summer. Hopefully we hear more soon, but I have added them back to our active band links, so stay tuned! My source is frontman Rob Speers' personal Facebook page.
  • In advance of their return to the stage on Saturday at the Sewer Swampstravaganza, "the original crash band" Sykotyk Rampage have quietly posted a new original song onto their Reverbnation page! Entitled "Came In Like A Storm", I assume it will be on one of their 2014 "albums" to be posted. A bluesy hard rocker with drummer Paul Becker on vocals, fans should take to this track, so give it a listen above, and maybe we'll hear it live this weekend!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news tomorrow, along with weekend concert previews as well! Thanks everyone!

Fuck The Facts/Empyrean Plague Concert Review!!

Finally, we have our review of Sunday Night's Empyrean Plague concert on the site for you guys, so you guys can hear what went down at The Oddfellows Hall for this well anticipated all ages show! The turnout was decent and better than at Dank Fest, especially late, though compared to the last Fuck The Facts shows in the Soo, attendance was down, which could partly be blamed on being on a Sunday night. Now, to the bands!

Opening this show was the new/old metal project named This Is Your Band On Drugs (replacing The Strange Coyotes), so what should you know on them? They feature Strange Coyotes frontman Chase Wigmore on guitar and vocals alongside singer Nick Burns with programmed drums, and their sound reminded me of a hybrid of Rotopsy and Chase's older solo/band material. Chase's creativity & energy were a constant (again, he looked almost possessed at points), and Nick has growling ability, but something seemed rushed and improvised about their set, and I'd be curious to see if they expand their sound further. Interesting stuff though, and it was nice to see Crucify The Whore's Tyler Gibson and The Bear Hunters' Johnny Belanger join in for guest spots during their set! No word yet on if This Is Your Band On Drugs will essentially replace The Strange Coyotes or not, but stay tuned for more info on them this week!

Next up was the aforementioned Crucify The Whore for another Oddfellows Hall set of solo goregrind brutality! If you've seen C.T.W. live, there wasn't much variance from the norm, but devoted fans of Blood Shed Productions got the first mosh pits of the day going for Tyler "Ringsnaps" Gibson's set, which included familiar existing originals like "People These Days" and "Bunk, Shake, and Headache", untitled new songs, a guest spot from Tyler's Rotopsy bandmate Dylan Taylor, and even a surprise cover of a boss theme from Super Mario 64! It did seem unfortunate that he had to call in fans and friends from outside for certain songs, but there's growing pains for any young musician regardless of genre. Musically, Tyler's guitar skill got some nice showcasing via some solid solos, but compared to Dank Fest, there were some more technical issues and more of an informal feel.  Solid work though, and stay tuned for news concerning the next C.T.W. demo!

Third was the first live set from local death metal quartet The Bear Hunters in 3 months, and despite the relatively long break between shows for them, they didn't have any rust to show for it! Their 8 song set was mostly devoted to newer originals like "The Void" and "I Fear No God", though classics like "Collapse The Sun" and their cover of Amon Amarth's "Guardians of Asgaard" were there for longtime fans, and shockingly, they didn't end 'er with "Render" (This Void) for a change. The ending of that song drags on far longer than necessary, so I wasn't too hurt by that! Talent-wise, everyone was on form, with Nik Deubel's growling as brutal as ever, and Mitch Sirie showcasing his guitar riffs and solos strongly as usual, but fans didn't seem as into the set as I'd assume they would be. Every show's different, but I enjoyed the brutality here, and don't miss them at The Oddfellows Hall again on Saturday at the 4th Sewer Swampstravaganza!

Fourth on the bill was scheduled to be the Soo debut of local/London death metal band Saints & Serpents, but they did not perform at the event. While a reason hasn't been announced, keep in mind that the band has not updated their Facebook page since February, and at last word, still had a drummer vacancy (plus, Steve & Andrew have been very busy with D3athcharg3r lately.) You think they'd have told promoters about not being able to play, but hopefully things are alright in their camp, and we'll let you guys know if we hear anything! Due to the late notice, they were not replaced on the bill, so the show ended an hour earlier than projected.

After 8 months away from the local stage (and their relocation to St. Catharine's), local death metal/crust punk trio Shit Liver finally came back to the Soo on Sunday night for a brutal and fast paced set of originals in what effectively served as the release show for their long awaited debut CD! Their set featured 12 of the 15 songs from said album, along with 5 newer and non-CD tracks like "Matt Got Beat Up By Cops", "Hitting The Fan", and the brand new "Sir-Osis" (which they were still writing on Sunday), and fans definitely ate up every minute of their return, inciting the best mosh pits yet of the night! Despite the wait for their homecoming, they had no rust due to a steady run of Southern Ontario gigs in the interim, and the intense growling and screaming from all 3 members, plus Matt Baic's steady drumming and Josh Penno's hard hitting guitar riffs kept fans going throughout! Hard to believe how they've grown, but their livers are still shitty, but hopefully we'll see them back in town at some point this summer, and thanks again for the CD!

Co-headlining on Sunday was North Bay black metal quartet Empyrean Plague in their first local stop since the Ypres Metal Fest two years ago, and they definitely had a stronger showing due partly to the longer set and happier circumstances! Oddly preferring to play with the house lights on, the band put their own melodic and brutal spin on black metal, and in all honesty, the visual look and presence of the band reminded me of Gates of Winter at points (I may be alone on that though.) Empyrean Plague's set was a mixture of new material from their upcoming album and classic originals like "We Are The North", and while their music was great and true to the Northern Ontario black metal sound, I could barely hear Mike Burge & Kyle Tayler's vocals for most of their set. It'd have been nice to get more moshing, but their talents are top notch, with bassist Kye Bell particularly impressing, and hopefully we'll get to see the guys back up here soon!

And of course, your headliners were Ottawa/Gatineau grindcore standouts (and Juno nominees) Fuck The Facts in their first local stop in 2 years, and they definitely put an awesome capper to the evening with their unpredictable and psychotic brand of metal! Like their last few local dates, I again think that their set went by too fast, partly thanks to their generally short songs, but the 12 songs and intro that we did get definitely got a great reception and some awesome moshing going! Mixing established songs like "Kelowna" and "Everyone Is Robbing The Dead" with French language songs like "Vent Du Nord" & "Jour De Souffrance" from last year's "Amer" EP, their set was relentless, unique, and very heavy, with Mel Mongeon and Marc Bourgon showing their brutal vocals well throughout, and Topon Das and Johnny Ibay keeping things crushing on guitar throughout! Fuck The Facts have a very big local following, and hopefully it grows further and helps get them back here sooner than 2 years!

Overall, this was another great concert, and kudos to Tyler St. Amour and Heavy North Entertainment for putting it on! I just wish the attendance was more consistent. Also, our best wishes go out to Bear Hunters drummer Johnny Belanger (cool mask!) after being hospitalized post-show due to a cellulitis infection. Hopefully this won't affect the Jack Spades EP release show, and get better soon! I got plenty of photos at the show, so check them out at this link or at the SMS' Facebook page (which also has this "Tag Yourself!" crowd shot), and I did get videos too! Embedded below, here's This Is Your Band On Drugs playing their song "Black Metal Is Too Hard" (followed by another original, title unknown), Crucify The Whore playing their sister songs "Batch Cones" & "Orthostatic Hypotension", The Bear Hunters playing "Transcend Judgment", Shit Liver playing their songs "Livin' In Shit" & "It's Not My Problem", Empyrean Plague playing their new original "Ethereal Forger", and Fuck The Facts playing their song "95"!

That's all for now, but stay tuned either tonight or tomorrow for a new news post! Thanks everyone!
