Our Recap Of Brad Example's Afterparty Episode With Dustin Jones & Mikey Hawdon!!

As some readers may be aware, former Room 206 bassist/Role Models frontman bassist Brad "Example" Lacell has been hosting his own live-streamed interview/performance series on his YouTube channel named The Afterparty since 2024, where he jams and talks with musicians remotely from his current Atikokan homebase. Brad is among the local musicians who has gotten involved in the "DIY independent musician networking" community and has made friends and connections from far flung locales (some you'll recognize from Mike Haggith interviews and appearances), but Brad has done episodes with local talent before, like Frank Deresti and Jay Case. Brad's rootsier, country-inflected solo material largely doesn't cross our radar on its own, so that has kept me from covering Afterparty episodes in the past, but that changes today, as 3/4ths of The Inner City Surfers reunited last week!

This unites Brad with singer/guitarist Dustin Jones and drummer Mikey Hawdon (alas, no Dave) for a 58 minute acoustic jam, and despite the AI cover image, they were filmed remotely and not around a campfire with a bear in the lake behind them. In fact, Mikey & Dustin were together at Dustin's own Mission Control Studios, so things in familiar in that respect! The episode starts with Brad playing the late-era Surfers original "Excess Express", followed by "Been Done" from their debut self-titled "blue album". Brad hands things off to his old bandmates next, with Dustin starting with a solo rendition of "Screwed" from "Laughing On The Outside" (later re-recorded for their self-titled "black album"). After some light conversation, including pondering why Brad wasn't wearing a shirt, Mikey performs his first song, and rather than do a Surfers cut, he instead covered Sloppy Seconds' "Human Waste".

Remember, Mikey was the Inner City Surfers' drummer, though him switching instruments with Dustin was a common occurrence live. Afterwards, Brad returns for his first covers of the live-stream, specifically Sebadoh's "Rebound" and John Prine's "Souvenirs" (Brad is a massive John Prine fan and it shows in his solo music). We return to the Soo for the next songs, and in a surprise, the aforementioned Frank Deresti (of Lake Effect fame) joins in on mandolin for a rendition of "Father Time" from Dustin's inactive solo project Jonesy Land, which Frank collaborated with Dustin on in the first place. Mikey takes the spotlight next for "Clouds Float By", which is a more recent solo composition of his. The second half of the episode begins with Brad playing two more Surfers originals, including "Get High" from "Laughing On The Outside" and "Rollin'" from their oft-forgotten third album "Time To Travel On".

Dustin (and Frank) return to the forefront next for Dustin's first outside cover of the episode, namely The Commodores' "Easy", and it's definitely not the Faith No More cover given the presence of the second verse here. Mikey's next song actually is a collaboration with both Dustin and Frank, so finally, we can technically say that Dos Amigos played here, albeit with guest mandolin! This song was "Whole New Day", a song of Brad's from The Surfers' "Laughing On The Outside", and if you like that particular album, you'll like that Brad plays "TV" from it when he begins his last chunk of the stream! Brad's last song of the episode is "Backwards", one of the first songs that he and Dustin wrote for the "blue album". The episode closes with Mikey & Dustin (with Frank hopping back in midway through) covering Poison's deep cut "Look But You Can't Touch", followed by thank yous.

Not an interview series here, just an unplugged reunion of most of one of the Soo's biggest punk bands, and fans will like that eight of their songs were tackled here, albeit nothing that 100% originated on the "black album". While mostly an even split between the Soo and Atikokan, I would have liked to have seen Mikey involved a little more, as he only performed on four songs, but Dos Amigos proper did emerge in the back half! There were occasional flubs, and I do miss Brad's beard, but if you love The Inner City Surfers, check out this fun and loose Afterparty episode below, and see much more from Brad and various guests at this link! Thanks everyone!

YouTube Channel Profile Series: CrazyCarLover1990's Channel

It's now time for this month's YouTube Channel Profile, as we again feature a randomly selected YouTube channel whose uploads are at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, or punk artists/concerts, in order to encourage views and subscriptions! This month's choice takes us to the early touring days of a high profile local punk band, so here's what you should know!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

CrazyCarLover1990's Channel (http://www.youtube.com/@CrazyCarLover1990)

Owner: YouTube user CrazyCarLover1990, exact identity unclear, but they likely live in the Ottawa region

Channel Timeline: Launched on October 19th, 2009; Videos uploaded from October 2010 through January 2013

Channel Summary: Thirteen of this channel's 23 videos come from four different concerts played by inactive local Celtic punk quartet Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide in southeastern Ontario back in 2010 and 2011. Other content on the channel include five videos from a Cesar Millan live show in 2010, a singer/guitarist named Alex at a possibly unrelated event, and the channel's four newest videos, which are not musically focused and do not have a common thread beyond who uploaded them.

Why You Should Watch: Fans of early Rising Tide material and concerts will definitely be curious to check out these videos, especially as Dustin & crew were still relatively new in their run at this point, and while they didn't reinvent the wheel too much as the 2010s progressed, these are a fun look at their early run, even if all concert videos here were shot vertically! The Cesar Millan videos may interest Dog Whisperer fans, Alex is a good singer, and the other videos on offer will have individual appeal at best, most notably this racing lap video. Note that multiple newer Tide videos from here and afar can be found elsewhere on YouTube and Facebook, and that this channel hasn't been visibly updated in over a decade.

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:

Dustin jones: The first five videos here come from The Rising Tide's show at D'Arcy McGee's in Ottawa circa early-mid 2010, when they featured Dustin Jones (vocals/guitar) alongside fiddle player Sheldon Jaaskelainen and his brother, stand-up bassist Marshall Jaaskelainen, with ex-Redefined/future My Son The Hurricane drummer Danno O'Shea behind the kit (note that the debut EP that they were touring in support of did not have drums at all). CrazyCarLover filmed them playing "Molly Malloy", "Summer Honey", and "Tick Tick Tock", plus Sheldon's solo vocal/guitar rendition of the Old Crow Medicine Show's "Wagon Wheel". Featured here is their eponymous "Rising Tide", as preceded by their traditional intro of the allegro movement from Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, K. 525". Vertical dimensions aside (with the camera sometimes flipped sideways), everyone performs well on these early numbers, and Ottawa fans took to their Celtic punk hybrid well!

Dustin Jones and the Rising Tide - Sheldon singing rock me: The Rising Tide's second D'Arcy McGee's show filmed here was in September 2010, which featured songs from their then-upcoming 2011 CD "Whiskey Will Be Our Sun". In upload order, CrazyCarLover filmed them playing "Half My Life", & "Until We Drop", and covering Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" & Tom Waits' "Cold Water", but this time, we'll embed their Sheldon-led cover of "Wagon Wheel" (erroneously labelled as "Rock Me") as it is this channel's most popular video, with over 1,500 views as of this writing. Not the most punk cover choice out there, but Sheldon has a good handle on this modern country staple, and everyone seemed to know it! The final video from D'Arcy McGee's on this channel saw The Tide playing their Sheldon-led original song "Brass Knuckles" at the venue's New Year's party that December.

Dustin Jones And The Rising Tide: CrazyCarLover definitely also loved The Rising Tide, as they filmed Dustin & crew one more time at the Tir Nan Og Irish Pub in Kingston (2 hours south of Ottawa) circa June 2011. Now featuring Dustin's Inner City Surfers/Bookclub bandmate Mikey Hawdon on drums, the guys are seen here covering Hank Williams III's "Smoke & Wine" with Sheldon on lead vocals, a video that was uploaded twice with slightly varying titles for some reason. A rollicking hellbilly cover that puts everyone on their toes, this is a nice change of pace from The Tide's usual M.O., if not zoomed in especially close. Hopefully we hear more from The Rising Tide down the road when the time is right!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profile! As decreed by random selection, we'll actually be returning to the well of "auto-generated YouTube Music channels for Mikhal Muto bands" next, as we'll be looking at Vanity First's YouTube Music channel next month, two months after profiling Agnosticism's similar channel. Look for that on or around March 26th, and for this weekend's concert previews starting later today! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Bone Yard 225) & More Recent Updates!!

I hope that our Canadian readers had a good Victoria Day long weekend! We're picking things back up for Sault Ontario news on this Tuesday morning, including some assorted recent notes and a bunch of summer season LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, so here's what you should know!

Local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard 225 have announced more summer concerts via their website's calendar, so where can you see Greg, Alex, and Warren after June 8th?  The first new shows will see Bone Yard play at the Queen Street Cruise once again on Friday, June 14th & Saturday, June 15th, marking their seventh straight appearances at this annual event and first since tacking "225" to their name. Of course, the Queen Street Cruise is the annual classic car cruise and show taking place downtown, and after moving from its home base at GFL Memorial Gardens to Roberta Bondar Pavilion last year due partly to construction and larger space, the cruise will remain at the Pavilion this year, presumably to keep using the larger locale. Bone Yard 225 will appreciate playing under the tent again in case of bad weather! Like last year, their sets will be at 7:00 PM on Friday and a 12:30 PM matinee during the car show on Saturday.

The Cruise is an ALL AGES event (aside from needing a valid drivers license and whatnot for the cruise itself) and there is no admission fee beyond the $20 registration if you are entering you vehicle for the cruise or show (click here for details). Hopefully the Cruise is another huge hit for car aficionados, let alone music fans, and there's more family entertainment there too, so visit the above links for more on what's going down next month! In terms of traditional indoor concerts, Bone Yard 225 will next return to Shooters Downstairs Lounge for a one-nighter (as they host DJs most Fridays) on Saturday, June 22nd, in their first show at the Dennis Street nightclub since playing there three nights ago. If you'd rather see them elsewhere downtown, they will be rocking Reggie's Place for full weekends on June 28th-29th (for this year's Canada Day long weekend) and on July 26th-27th, so keep all of these dates in mind!

Yes, they will be at Reggie's on Saturday, June 1st too, but that one-nighter was already announced by the band. Lastly for this batch of shows, Bone Yard 225 will go "uncorked" for an acoustic show at The Water Tower Pub on Friday, July 12th, in their first show at the Great Northern Road nightclub since their upcoming date there on May 31st (which they also already announced). Remember, The Water Tower Pub hosts different acts nightly by rule. Sounds like a busy summer ahead, so look for Bone Yard's hard rocking classics at multiple venues in the coming months! Of the bar shows, all are 19+ with no cover charge, and all have 9:30 PM start times except at The Water Tower Pub (8:00 PM). Conspicuous by its absence from their schedule is a gig at Rotaryfest Stage 1, but note that A. the full schedule is not out yet (it was unveiled on May 26th last year) and B. they didn't play at last year's Rotaryfest.

We'll let you know when we know who all is playing at Rotaryfest this year, but in their four Stage 1 appearances from 2017-2022, Bone Yard were a nightly closing band, so one assumes they'd be well positioned if they do come back. Visit the above links for more details on Bone Yard 225's summer slate so far, and don't miss them at Gateway Casino this Saturday!

Finally for today, here's three shorter recent news items, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Local folk punk/extreme metal solo musician Chase Wigmore reportedly dropped out of the Hails concert at The Distraction this past Sunday, as per Ha!ls frontman Brenton Ellis on his personal Facebook page earlier that afternoon. A reason for Chase's withdrawal wasn't given beyond that he "can't make it tonight", and he was not replaced on late notice. Hopefully all's well with Chase, and that Hails still rocked the old barbershop in style!
  • Prolific local alt-rock musician Dustin Goodall has received two 2024 Northern Ontario Film & Music Award nominations for Outstanding Engineer, respectively for his work engineering/co-producing The Northwest's 2022 EP "All In" and Handsome Sandwich's 2023 debut album "Deconstructed" at his studio Unsalted Audio. It's rare when NOMFA nominations cross our radar, but it is very cool to see Dustin recognized twice over for his work in the mid 2022-mid 2023 voting period! The awards ceremony takes place in Sudbury late next month, so click here for details on that and the complete nominee list!
  • I have moved local metal solo project Sir Hell to our inactive band links due to a year's inactivity. Led by Bear Hunters/ex-Handsome Sandwich guitarist Mitch Sirie, this was his newest solo project after prior attempts across the 2010s under differing names, with Sir Hell releasing a proper studio version of the Bear Hunters live favourite "Squirrel Buddy" to their Bandcamp page in February 2023. I was definitely curious to hear more from Sir Hell, but nothing has publically emerged since the "Squirrel Buddy" re-release, and hopefully Mitch resurrects this "vessel for my madness" when the time is right!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

Details On Dustin Jones' Interview On Across The Tracks On The Borderline!!

Back in June, two veteran local punk musicians were separately interviewed for radio shows on local internet radio station The Borderline, and I do apologize for both being so late to be covered on the SMS! We'll start with the June 23rd interview with Jonesy Land frontman/Bookclub bassist Dustin Jones, marking his second long-form interview with the station, following an episode of Sev's Cellar three years ago. This time, Dustin featured on Borderline founder Adrian Vilaca's interview series Across The Tracks, which focuses on detailing original songs, and the episode runs for 53 minutes. Conducted in studio, it's clear from the off that they've known each other for years, which helps for the comfort level! The interview started with Dustin explaining why he launched the Jonesy Land project apart from his bands, as well as the overall lighter/reserved tone of the project's debut album "Zoom-Out".

Like in past episodes of Across The Tracks, Adrian asks about the origins and themes behind songs by the interview subject, and while he does not stick to the release order of the album, the songs in question are played after that segment wraps up (though they are rarely directly introduced by Adrian, so that can catch you off guard at times). "Father Time" comes up first, but "Ode To The Boys" is discussed next, and it's neat hearing some insight as to The Inner City Surfers' heyday! The song actually wasn't directly about his old bands, moreso old friends, but Dustin does also give some advice to current musicians to start their careers, especially with how easy self-promotion and networking is compared to when he was younger. The debut single "Old Man" is next to be outlined, though note that the interview predates the music video for the song. Next, they discuss his love for Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District.

That ties directly into their discussion of the Jonesy Land track "Superior Sons" and some of his surprising inspiration in that song's composition. Adrian next asks about Dustin's own Mission Control Studio and his experiences working with musicians who record there, leading into talk of "Keep Trying", which featured Shannon Moan on guest vocals. Dustin next talks about his views on the local music scene at present, as well as his experiences running a local songwriters competition with Greg MacLachlan pre-pandemic, while explaining how he's approaching music as he gets older, and how this album has a different edge than on his prior albums. This led into "Lonely Boy", before Adrian asks Dustin about fatherhood and his experiences with his kids, while also noting the experience he had making this album and some of the (largely) positive reaction that he received from listeners.

Given the talk about his family, this naturally led into "Shine On" (written for his daughter Jett), and the interview naturally wrapped up with "Summer's End", which was written for his late stepfather and written in the style of music that he loved. The interview ends with Dustin thanking Adrian for all he does locally, as well as plugging Jonesy Land, Mission Control Studios, and Tidal Records, though no sign of a dedicated band page for Jonesy Land yet. Fun interview that really explores the "Zoom-Out" album in depth and Dustin's maturity as a songwriter, and while the album proper is light on "punk" content, you can see how his life's experiences as a whole shaped things on the final product! I'm kinda surprised that he didn't talk about Bookclub though, as they are is current live band, past teasers about Jonesy Land playing shows again acknowledged. Check out this Across The Tracks episode at the links above!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews next, and that other June interview with a local punk icon on The Borderline will be covered in an upcoming SMS post! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? (January 2023 Update)

I hope everyone had a Happy New Year! or our first post of 2023, here's this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" installment, where we're again looking at the current release whereabouts of upcoming Sault Ontario metal, hard rock, and/or punk albums! Inclusions here must have had publically acknowledged recording sessions commence for an album or EP, not just songwriting or recording a stand-alone digital single for free platforms. This month's installment has six entries, two updated with new information (as noted with their titles in italics), plus a now unlikely-to-be-released album is noted at post's end. So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chase James Wigmore - The Chaotic Rite

Rumoured Songs: Multiple

Background: Ever the prolific artist & songwriter, local folk punk/extreme metal musician Chase Wigmore has been working on an extensive rock opera for years (once claimed to be a 33 part work), originally named "A Story About A Kid Named Todd". Worked on in between his other unrelated solo albums, released for sale or otherwise, Chase posted a lengthy elaboration of the rock opera last year, now titled "The Chaotic Rite", outlining its concept, recording plans, and long-term release timeline. Clips of songs from the album have surfaced on his Facebook page, as well as the final artwork, while in promotion for his last release, Chase has hinted that "The Chaotic Rite" might be his final eponymous solo album.

Current Release Status: Your guess is as good as mine for when this will finally come out, but remember that Chase is very prolific and varied in his musical interests, and not every album of his has seen a formal paid release, either by finishing it's lifespan as a demo, or by being released online for free. Regardless, he has been working on the rock opera for years to ensure a quality product, so stay tuned for updates from his camp!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fort Creek's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Hammer Down"

Background: Local southern/hard rock quintet Fort Creek have sporadically teased plans to record an EP since February 2020, and while the pandemic lockdowns may have gave them more time to record, they wouldn't release any samples until almost two years later when they shared this snippet of their single "Hammer Down" their Facebook page, later posting this 72 second clip. The guys debuted it at their headlining concert at Soo Blaster in June, and have played it live regularly since, but they have yet to release any full tracks online. It's not clear if new rhythm guitarist Bill Brouillard will be part of the recordings, or if his predecessor Matt Sibilo's tracks will remain on the final product.

Current Release Status: Fort Creek originally planned to release the EP in "late summer", later adjusted to "late 2022", but both timeframes have obviously came and went. The band had been part of a three month hiatus late last year, but whether the break was to work on the EP isn't publically known. There are a lot of unknowns either way, especially given the 2+ years of production time and that this is a band primarily known for their work on the weekend cover circuit (though some members do have experience in name original bands, especially Tony). It will be interesting to see how things develop, so stay tuned!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Handsome Sandwich - "Deconstructed"

Rumoured Songs: "All Or Nothing", "Bitter", "No Entry", "No Idea"

Background: After taking a year+ long hiatus during the pandemic, local "no genre" band Handsome Sandwich reunited in mid-2021 with a new lineup, with Jesse Cook & Johnny Belanger now joined by singer Taylor Emlaw, guitarist Mitch Sirie, and (as of last summer) bassist Rafael Medina. Via their new Facebook page & YouTube channel, the band almost instantly began teasing a debut album (after previously being covers-only from 2017-2020), posting videos of them playing original songs. In June 2021, Handsome Sandwich revealed that the album had began pre-production, with recording at Unsalted Audio with producer Dustin Goodall. The band also confirmed in July that guest saxophonist Josh Norling will appear on their new song "No Entry". In November, the band confirmed that the album's name was changed from "Lettuce" to "Deconstructed", and that recording sessions had wrapped, with Jordan Zadorozny set to mix the tracks at Skylark Park in Pembroke

Current Release Status: If you believe Taylor's on-stage remarks at The Soo's Got Talent in October (source here), the album is slated to be released on May 5th, an oddly specific date given the then-7 month time gap. Regardless on if that date will prove to be true, the new look band has definitely hit the ground running since resuming activity in 2021, and they have gotten a positive reception for the new material so far, so stay tuned for updates from Handsome Sandwich's camp when they have them!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike Haggith - "All The Best In All You Do"

Rumoured Songs: "I've Seen It Before", "Twist of Fate", "If Only You Could Hear Me"

Background: During his live-streamed Facebook concert in February, local/Thompson, Manitoba alt-hard rock musician Mike Haggith revealed that he was working on his newest studio album, entitled "All The Best In All You Do". Like his other Thompson-era albums, this will have an overarching concept, this time about the transition out of depression and being manipulated by others, into a happier personal life. At the time, Mike was 35% done with the album, and he has played two new originals planned for it in live-streams and in his 2022 concerts, as well as "If Only You Could Hear Me", a still-unreleased song from early in his time in Thompson. A single version of "Twist of Fate" was unveiled in July, and live videos of all three songs can be found on Mike's Facebook page and/or YouTube channel.

Current Release Status: Given Mike's day job and personal commitments, he hasn't been as active on social media in recent months, but he was playing live dates last year and presumably working on recording the new album where time allows. It is worth noting that Mike did move out of Thompson late last year, but outside of personal remarks, he has yet to publically elaborate on his musical future beyond vague teasers. Hopefully things are progressing naturally in studio, and we'll keep you posted!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike McCleary - Fallout From Midnight Tides

Rumoured Songs: Unknown

Background: After taking a couple of years off from public updates on his solo music (and taking down much of his prior back catalog from streaming services), local hard rock solo musician Mike McCleary announced on his Facebook page in January 2022 that he was working on new original music. In April, Mike clarified that this would be an instrumental album (his de-listed albums all had vocals) inspired by his own curiosity and creative thinking. Mike has since posted a sampler video featuring the planned album artwork and title, and he also revealed the album's planned track structure (seven songs, three being 7+ minutes long), but has kept most specifics close to his vest.

Current Release Status: Mike was very optimistic about the album's progress, but was intentionally not putting a public timetable on when it will be completed, and things were complicated when his hard drive containing his new music crashed in October (the files still hadn't been recovered as of the 10th, and no updates have followed). Hopefully he can recover everything and that this isn't a huge bump in the road towards his new album, but we'll keep you posted when we hear more!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Uncanny Valley's debut album

Rumoured Songs: "The Uncanny Valley", "Glowin'", "Middle Man", “This Love is Psychedelic”, "Stuck In Rotation", “Sweet Like Sugar”, "Fumbling Through"

Background: The new classic hard rock band from 2019 Soo's Got Talent winner Adrian Sullivan, fans will have seen original material of theirs right from the start, as The Uncanny Valley debuted their own songs in their first live concert at The Canadian on New Year's Eve 2019. Live concert & jam session videos have followed on their Facebook page featuring their own material as well. After posting a teaser audio clip of "Sweet Like Sugar" in September 2020, they posted the full studio version of "Middle Man" that October, finally confirming there that they are working on their first album. The guys did record a studio version of "Stuck In Rotation" at Unsalted Audio for the Clusterfolk Music Festival and a related compilation album in April, but whether that exact recording will be included on the band's own album is unclear.

Current Release Status: No clue, which isn't helped by The Uncanny Valley's age and relatively unfamiliar profile for many readers, not to mention the complications of the pandemic, but they have played a number of local concerts in the past few months. That said, they are a talented group who seemed to be taking the right steps for the future, and hopefully more updates on The Uncanny Valley's debut album follow in some form or another when ready!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the album removed from the series (at least for now) due to its current unlikely release status, here's what you should know on it:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide's fourth album

Rumoured Songs: "Lost & Found", "All Broke Down", "No Control"

Background: Local Celtic punk veterans Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide began recording sessions by October 2018 at Dustin's own Mission Control Studios, as per their Facebook page. In January 2019, the band confirmed that they were indeed recording a fourth studio album (and first since 2012), which would presumably be released through Tidal Records, and would also be their first album with second guitarist Liam Seymour & drummer Chris Johns. While "All Broke Down" was initially cited as the first single in December 2018 (source here), the first two released singles were "Lost & Found" in March 2019 & "No Control" in December 2020. Credits on the above songs' music videos note that Kyle Whittaker at Strange Pumpkin Studios in St. Catharine's was mixing the album, as he had done for multiple Tidal/Mission Control releases. Dustin posted a handful of solo songs on Tidal Records' YouTube channel in 2020, but it's not publically known whether or not they would also be used as new Tide originals.

Reason For Removal: I've opted to remove this album due to The Rising Tide being moved to our inactive band links, after going one year since their last social media update, though tangible updates regarding new/future Tide activity had not occurred since 2020, partially due to fiddler Sheldon Jaaskelainen working out of town. Frontman Dustin Jones has hardly been idle since, working on studio material for his solo project Jonesy Land that often bears thematic similarities with The Tide, so definitely follow them on streaming services and Tidal Records/Mission Control Studios accounts to see what Dustin's up to nowadays for original music. Still, it'd be neat to see The Rising Tide's fourth album completed!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! This series will return on or around February 2nd, while our next monthly feature post will either be this month's Defunct Local Band Profile or this month's CD review, so stay tuned for that and more news & notes on the site soon! Thanks everyone!

Bookclub/Wyld Stallyns Concert Preview, New Videos, And More!!

As promised, we're finishing up this weekend's hard rock/punk concert previews in today's post (anything on super late notice excepted), and to round things out, there's an inactive band note and a couple of new videos to check out. Here's what you should know!

New and online page-less local alternative supergroup Bookclub and local funk/hard rock cover sextet The Wyld Stallyns will join forces for a special holiday season concert at LopLops Lounge TOMORROW NIGHT! Effectively a seasonal encore for two bands that shared the stage at Outspoken Brewing's Oktoberfest concert in the fall, this will be Bookclub's second concert period and first as headliners. With a stacked lineup featuring Inner City Surfers & Room 206 alumni playing a relatively new batch of songs compared to their prior punk-centric bands, hopefully Bookclub make a good impression at LopLops tomorrow! The Wyld Stallyns should do the same in this rare LopLops appearance from them, so look for a fun opener from Christina, Rob, Jesse, Alex, Derek, and Josh to kick off the festivities! No word on seasonal frills (poster aside), nor how LopLops' recent renovations will affect the concert proper, if at all.

Despite the all-local lineup, this show will have paid admission of $15 in advance ($20 at the door), and you can buy tickets online through the Facebook event page. This is a 19+ event, and it starts at 10:00 PM.  This should be a fun time for local music fans hoping to hear some talented musicians rocking out over the holidays, so definitely visit the above links for more details, and here's Bookclub live!

Next up, here's (one of) the newest Mikey & His Uke cover videos, courtesy of the project's YouTube channel! Of course, this features Bookclub frontman Mikey Hawdon, so it's a natural segue! Unveiled on November 23rd, this is a cover of Cyndi Lauper's verison of The Brains' "Money Changes Everything" featuring Mikey on ukelele (initially) and guitar once the full band kicks in. Joining him from afar are The Haunt singer Anastasia Grace Haunt, Warrant's Erik Turner and Mikey's Fairmounts bandmate/producer Simon Head on guitar, New Found Glory bassist Ian Grushka, Fenix TX drummer Damon de la Paz, and Huey Lewis & The News keyboardist Sean Hopper (a huge get for Mikey personally, as he loves that band and even briefly fronted a Huey Lewis tribute band in Toronto). Not the punkiest song going for Mikey & friends to tackle, but it's very well performed on all fronts, and Anastasia nails the vocals in particular!

While writing this post, December's (non seasonal) cover video was uploaded to the Mikey & His Uke channel, so we'll save that for an upcoming news post, especially given the people involved in that one. Nicely edited and shot, so fans of the Mikey & His Uke series will definitely want to check out their Cyndi Lauper cover below!

Also today, I have reluctantly decided to move local Celtic punk quintet Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide back to our inactive band links. The band has not updated their Facebook page in any capacity since a post share from another page on December 18th of last year, but they haven't posted anything themselves about new/future band activity since releasing their "No Control" music video in December 2020, and they haven't played live in three years. A factor in their 2021-2022 dormancy was fiddler Sheldon Jaaskelainen working out of town, and the pandemic can't be ignored either, but Dustin has been focusing his original music pursuits on his solo project Jonesy Land in the last two years, not to mention the revived Cover-Up and the aforementioned Bookclub. After their original 2007-2016 run and a year+ hiatus, The Rising Tide returned in 2018 and worked on an unreleased fourth album over the next few years, with two songs making it online.

They still gigged in 2018 & 2019 too, but dialed back their touring schedule in favour of staying local, while also expanding to a five piece lineup. It's a shame that The Tide's fourth album never got completed, but hopefully this isn't the absolute last we'll hear from them, and remember that Dustin does cover Tide originals in Jonesy Land's rare live sets. Best of luck to him, Sheldon, Marshall, Liam, Chris, and their former drummers in the future!

We'll close today by not straying too far genre-wise for a new video from former Brain Tuel guitarist Zach Reid's YouTube channel!  His first upload in a year, this video (like that one) sees Zach cover a Christmas song on acoustic guitar, this time The Vince Guaraldi Trio's "Christmas Time Is Here" from A Charlie Brown Christmas. This is a well done, if spare rendition of this jazz Christmas staple, so give it a watch below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? (December 2022 Update)

After a slight delay, here's our final "Where Are The New Albums?" post of the year, where we're looking at the newest public updates on the whereabouts of upcoming albums from local metal, hard rock, and/or punk bands! This month has no removed entries, but Chase Wigmore's successfully released "We Are All Going To Die" is obviously removed from his existing write-up. Five of the seven acts below have newly updated information, as noted with the titles in italics. So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chase James Wigmore - The Chaotic Rite

Rumoured Songs: Multiple

Background: Ever the prolific artist & songwriter, local folk punk/extreme metal musician Chase Wigmore has been working on an extensive rock opera for years (once claimed to be a 33 part work), originally named "A Story About A Kid Named Todd". Worked on in between his other unrelated solo albums, released for sale or otherwise, Chase posted a lengthy elaboration of the rock opera earlier this year, now titled "The Chaotic Rite", outlining its concept, recording plans, and long-term release timeline.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide's fourth album

Rumoured Songs: "Lost & Found", "All Broke Down", "No Control"

Background: Local Celtic punk veterans Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide began recording sessions by October 2018 at Dustin's own Mission Control Studios, as per their Facebook page. In January 2019, the band confirmed that they were indeed recording a fourth studio album (and first since 2012), which will presumably be released through Tidal Records, and will also be their first album with second guitarist Liam Seymour & drummer Chris Johns. Catharine's is mixing the album, as he has done for multiple Tidal/Mission Control releases. Dustin posted a handful of solo songs on Tidal Records' YouTube channel in 2020, but it's not publically known whether or not they'll also be used as new Tide originals.

Current Release Status: When The Tide shared a teaser clip for "Lost & Found", they mentioned that the album was "coming soon", which doesn't tell us much, especially as the band has only posted sparingly on Facebook since the end of 2020 (in fact, they're nearing our one year's public inactivity marker). This may be partially due to fiddler Sheldon Jaaskelainen's recent out of town commitments, with Dustin focusing on Jonesy Land, The Cover-Up, and Bookclub since. Still, with recording sessions well along the way, and two music videos now public, it's likely that Dustin and company aren't early in the process, but we'll let you know if more comes out on the album!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fort Creek's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Hammer Down"

Background: Local southern/hard rock quintet Fort Creek have sporadically teased plans to record an EP since February 2020, and while the pandemic lockdowns may have gave them more time to record, they wouldn't release a sample from the sessions until almost two years later when they shared this snippet of their single "Hammer Down" their Facebook page, later posting this 72 second clip.

Current Release Status: Fort Creek originally planned to release the EP in "late summer", but their Rotaryfest Stage 1 write-up says that it will come out in "late 2022". We're there now, and the band has since returned from their three month hiatus, but whether the break was to work on the EP isn't publically known There are a lot of unknowns either way, especially given the 2 years of production time and that this is a band primarily known for their work on the weekend cover circuit (though some members do have experience in name original bands, especially Tony). It will be interesting to see how things develop, so stay tuned!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Handsome Sandwich - "Deconstructed"

Rumoured Songs: "All Or Nothing", "Bitter", "No Entry", "No Idea"

Background: After taking a year+ long hiatus during the pandemic, local "no genre" band Handsome Sandwich reunited last summer with a new lineup, with Jesse Cook & Johnny Belanger now joined by singer Taylor Emlaw, guitarist Mitch Sirie, and (as of this summer) bassist Rafael Medina. Last month, the band confirmed that the album's name was changed from "Lettuce" to "Deconstructed", and that recording sessions had wrapped, with Jordan Zadorozny set to mix the tracks at Skylark Park in Pembroke

Current Release Status: If you believe Taylor's on-stage remarks at The Soo's Got Talent in October (source here), the album is slated to be released on May 5th, an oddly specific date given the then-7 month time gap. Regardless on if that date will prove to be true, the new look band has definitely hit the ground running since resuming activity last year, and they have gotten a positive reception for the new material so far, so stay tuned for updates from Handsome Sandwich's camp when they have them!

At the time, Mike was 35% done with the album, and he has played two new originals planned for it in live-streams and in his 2022 concerts in both Thompson and the Soo, as well as "If Only You Could Hear Me", a still-unreleased song from early in his time in Thompson. A single version of "Twist of Fate" was unveiled in July, and live videos of all three songs can be found on Mike's Facebook page and/or YouTube channel.

Current Release Status: Given Mike's day job and personal commitments, he hasn't been as active on social media in recent months, but he is playing live dates and presumably working on recording the new album where time allows. It is worth noting that Mike strongly hinted that he's moving out of Thompson in his live-streamed concert from last month, but he has yet to publically elaborate on that or how it may affect the album. Hopefully things are progressing naturally in studio, and we'll keep you posted!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike McCleary - Fallout From Midnight Tides

Rumoured Songs: Unknown

Background: After taking a couple of years off from public updates on his solo music (and taking down much of his prior back catalog from streaming services), local hard rock solo musician Mike McCleary announced on his Facebook page in January that he was working on new original music.

Current Release Status: Mike was very optimistic about the album's progress, but was intentionally not putting a public timetable on when it will be completed, and things were complicated when his hard drive containing his new music crashed last month (the files still hadn't been recovered as of the 10th, and no updates have followed).

After posting a teaser audio clip of "Sweet Like Sugar" in September 2020, they posted the full studio version of "Middle Man" last October, finally confirming there that they are working on their first album.

Where Are The New Albums? November 2022 Update

It's now time for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post, continuing our monthly check-in on albums from Sault Ontario metal, hard rock, and punk acts who have publically confirmed that studio sessions have begun for new albums, in order to see where they are for public updates! No additions this month (PROV3RB5's EP was announced and released between installments), but four of our six existing entries have updates, as noted with their titles in italics. So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chase James Wigmore's new albums

Rumoured Songs: Multiple

Background: Ever the prolific artist & songwriter, local folk punk/extreme metal musician Chase Wigmore posted on his eponymous Facebook page in August 2020 to announce two more distinct acoustic albums and the long-gestating completion of his 33 part rock opera "A Story About A Kid Named Todd". In 2021, one of those acoustic albums ("Ruins Of Life") was posted for free on YouTube, with Chase belatedly posting most of his back catalog for sale on his Bandcamp page by March 2022. In April, Chase released a brand new album named "Sonic Apocalypse", and teased in May that he started a new album in January that he was taking his time with so he could "make music actually worth listening to." From that album (since titled "Is This The End Of..."), Chase posted four songs planned for it in mid-2022. Chase also posted a lengthy elaboration of his rock opera, now titled "The Chaotic Rite", outlining its concept, recording plans, and long-term release timeline, and clips of songs from both have surfaced on Facebook & Bandcamp, as well both albums' cover artwork.

Current Release Status: Regarding "Is This The Name Of...", Chase had planned to release it on Sunday, but he has since confirmed on Facebook that it was postponed due to "circumstances beyond my control". Alas, your guess is as good as mine for when both albums will finally come out, but remember that Chase is very prolific and varied in his musical interests, and not every album of his has seen a formal paid release, either by finishing it's lifespan as a demo, or by being released online for free. In any event, stay tuned for updates from his camp when they roll in!

Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide's fourth album

Rumoured Songs: "Lost & Found", "All Broke Down", "No Control"

The band also confirmed in July that guest saxophonist Josh Norling will appear on their new song "No Entry".

Current Release Status: No clue, especially given that we have no prior Handsome Sandwich albums to go off of, but the new look band has definitely hit the ground running since resuming activity last year! Recent teasers on Facebook have hinted that "sandwich #1 is almost ready for consumption", and that they were undertaking "late night demo edits" last month, so things sound like they're nearing the end. Stay tuned for updates from Handsome Sandwich's camp when they have them!
