It's time for our last monthly feature post of March 2023, namelty this month's YouTube Channel Profile! This monthly feature series looks at YouTube channels whose content is at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, and/or punk artists and/or concerts, in order to spotlight their uploads and encourage readers to check them out and maybe subscribe for more! This month's channel isn't the most plentiful out there but its content spreads a diverse and entertaining range for local rock fans, so here's what you should know about it!

Channel Timeline: Launched on July 1st, 2011; Videos uploaded from November 2016 through August 2020

Channel Summary: A personal use channel without overt Oh!No ties, Alex's channel is mostly devoted to local concerts & albums, with three videos of the former type (including a clip of touring rapper Garbageface at The Canadian in 2017) and two of the latter. His last two uploads are of EPs by defunct Toronto "drunk 'n roll" quartet Ultraviolence, who played here a few times at Coch's Corner at the turn of the 2010s

Why You Should Watch: Local music fans should at least give Alex's channel a look, both from the out-of-print local albums on offer and the concert videos, and the lack of a genre focus ensures that there's a little something for many tastes, even if the local bands featured aren't around these days! While not local beyond being bought at shows here, the Ultraviolence EPs are a fun reminder of their wild stage show from their run too.

Stiffler's Mom - The Demo: Alex's first (and most popular) upload is a YouTube copy of inactive local hard/party rock trio Stiffler's Mom's EP "The Demo", which was released in 2004 and hadn't surfaced online before Alex posted it to YouTube twelve years later. Featuring Bone Yard singer/drummer Greg Simpson and future Buzzsaw Jaw bandmates Michael Davies & Jon Ferguson on guitar & bass, the four song demo features a cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" and three originals ("Yesterday", "Pearl's Necklace", and the Sin Stereo carryover "Enjoy The Show"). While somewhat inconsistent (especially on the cover), Stiffler's Mom delivered a fun batch of songs here, and it'd have been interesting to hear more of an original presence later on!

Gianni Gagoots Live 2: Two of Alex's three concert videos feature Gianni Gagoots, the mid-2010s funk/hard rock band known for their jokey Italian stage names and improvised jam instrumentals during their too-brief local run. The videos come from their LopLops Lounge headlining concert on April 15th, 2017, and feature ex-Redefined bandmates Matt Sibilo & Josh St. Amour alongside Rising Tide alums Liam Seymour & Frank McCormick, percussionist "Bergio the IceBurg" (they never gave his real name on their pages), and an unidentified guest congo player. Between these two videos (click here for the shorter of them), you get some unlabelled but fun and carefree jams, and it's a shame that the Gagoots didn't have a longer run, let alone that their Facebook page and most videos have been taken down!

Redefined (Sault Ste Marie) - Risk and Uncertainty: In August of 2020, Alex posted a copy of defunct local hard rock quartet Redefined's ca. 2002 studio album "Risk & Uncertainty" to his channel, bringing that album to a mass online audience much like with Stiffler's Mom's demo! The independently released CD featured future Gianni Gagoots bandmates Matt Sibilo & Josh St. Amour alongside Parabol singer John Barber and My Son The Hurricane drummer Danno O'Shea. All 10 songs (including "Foggy Style" cut "M.T. Bundies") are linked by clicking here, though the song names were retrieved from the Oocities archive of their old Geocities page due to the album's liner notes not giving the titles. Redefined's Tool-influenced modern hard rock goes over well on this album, even 20+ years later, so fans from back in the day and of John's later groups shouldn't bypass this CD!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Soundcheck & Tym Morrison), A New Video, And Much More!!

A lot of news has been getting backlogged on the site as of late, so today's post is largely to help catch up on some of the shorter stories of the past month that we hadn't covered here yet! Leading off though, we do have some a new video from a Sault Ontario act, plus some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, one on SHORT NOTICE, so here's what you should know!

Local hard rock solo musician Tym Morrison has announced three upcoming Friday nighters at The Roadhouse Bar & Grill on Trunk Road, as he'll bring his acoustic covers there TONIGHT, on August 17th, and on September 14th! Apologies for the short notice on TONIGHT's show, it was only announced yesterday via the Facebook event page for all three events. What seemed like an off weekend for Tym's solo project (Gliss isn't re-opened yet) is now looking a little more normal for Tym Morrison's skilled and prolific blend of unplugged covers, and at a familiar east end location to boot, so keep TONIGHT'S show in mind, as well as his other two Road House gigs through September! As usual for Tym's shows at this venue, expect 19+ age limits, 10:00 PM start times, and no announced cover charges for these dates. Next up, local classic/hard rock cover Soundcheck are advertised to return to The Water Tower Pub for one night only on Saturday, August 25th! Our source for this concert is the Sault Music News Letter Facebook page's share of the Water Tower Pub's music schedule for this month, and while the Mourning Wood successors have not promoted this show on their own Facebook page at press time, they'd likely only acknowledge them in the preceding week. This will be Soundcheck's first Water Tower Pub show in almost two months, but they actually just played shows at The Esquire Club on July 13th & 14th that we completely missed to cover on here. They didn't make the Sault Music News Letter or Esquire Club's online promotion at the time, and Soundcheck only promoted those shows the day they occurred. I profusely apologize for missing those concerts last month, but hopefully they went well, and we'd have covered them had they received better notice! Of course, the August 25th concert at The Water Tower Pub has a 9:30 PM start time, 19+ age limit, and no cover charge, and is a one nighter as usual for this venue.

Soundcheck's hard rocking & fan favourite covers should go over well there in three weeks' time, but at long last, the band has finally shared a public video of them in concert! This was filmed by local singer Alandra Brooks at their Water Tower Pub show in June (and subsequently shared to the band's Facebook page), and it's of Soundcheck covering Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" alongside Turner Up's Scott McLurg on guest drums. No word on where Steven Flint was, but Scott fits in well on this well performed (if laid back) rendition, which Alandra got a nice angle of, so give it a look below!



Finally for today, here's six assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• Local Celtic punk quartet Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide will take a road trip to Thessalon tonight for that town's annual Community Days festivities, as per label Tidal Records' Facebook page. As per this link, The Tide will be playing at the Marina at 7:00 PM as part of their Rock the Dock concert event, while Tidal Records have indicated that Chris Johns and Liam Seymour will play guest drums and guitar for this set. Thessalon is just outside of our coverage range, but if you're up for a trip east, look for The Tide tonight!
• It's official: Gianni Gagoots are out of this year's Northern Vibe Festival. They were quietly removed from the newest poster for the event (as seen on the festival's Facebook event page last week), and coupled with their Facebook page's deletion, it looks like they've dissolved for a second and final time. The band was not replaced on the artist-centric Forest Stage's lineup, but online page-less punk cover quartet The Cover-Up were quietly added to the bill before their exit, and they should deliver a fun set in Ophir next month! Stay tuned for word on which days bands are playing, and best of luck to the Gagoots' members in the future!
• Reunited indie rock band Great Chamberlain were the opening act for Id Iota's LopLops concert on July 20th, as per postings on their Facebook page. Apologies for not getting that on the site at the time, but hopefully the show was a hit! Unlike Id Iota, whose set followed their Rotaryfest Stage 2 set that evening, Great Chamberlain didn't play the Second Stage until the next day.
• In a possibly troubling sign for this band's active status, local progressive metal duo Kraken Mara have quietly deleted their Reverbnation page. While no statements have been made, the band has not issued a public update on any official page in 2018, and personal Facebook postings indicate that guitarist Brendan Christie is moving out of town again soon. Kraken Mara were already a studio-only project, so I won't rush to move them to our inactive band links, but October 2nd will be our one year cut-off date if there are no preceding signs of life. Hopefully we haven't heard the last of Brendan and Jake musically!
• Local indie punk quintet Northwest revealed on their Facebook page on Monday that their second EP would be released in "fall 2018." That could be as soon as next month, but we'll let you know when a date or release formats are confirmed! Also, their new profile picture (featuring a Polaroid photo at a riverbank) could very well be the EP's intended cover art, and if so, the title would be "Songs From 2015-2017", presumably referencing when the songs were first written. Suitably literal name, if that's the case!
• Though the wait continues for local on-sale availability of their debut EP, local punk trio Redudnant have posted the final studio copy of their song "That December" to their Reverbnation page, as well as a new band logo image combining the letter R with a Rolling Stones-esque tongue (I cannot confirm if is on the EP cover artwork or not.) This should be a nice teaser while the anticipation builds for any details on the format, sale locations, and track listing of Redundant's long awaited first CD, so stay tuned for updates!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Project 906), Tym Morrison Concert Preview, And More!!

On this Saturday morning, let's finally wrap up this weekend's hard rock concert previews (and a related missed show apology), while also tackling a recent concert video, some assorted recent updates, and leading off, some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for next month in the E.U.P.!

Sault Michigan hard/blues rock quartet Project 906 have a busy month ahead, so where can you see them live in August? After a couple of weeks off (a private event this weekend aside), this fan favourite band will make their debut appearance at nearby Pickford's annual Hay Days festival on Friday, August 3rd on an outdoor stage on Main Street, as part of the varied festivities and events on the festival's fourth of six days in operation. Other "local talent" is hyped as part of the day's program, but aren't outright stated by name. In any event, 906's set is slated to begin at 7:30 PM, and this is a FREE & ALL AGES event. Click here for full festival details on the 3rd and elsewhere! Next, Project 906 will play a solo concert at The Superior Cafe in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday, August 10th, in a rare headlining appearance in their hometown, so look for more hard rocking hits from them there! This show will be an 8:00 PM evening affair with no announced cover charges or age limits.

These join another new show in Paradise on Saturday, August 18th as part of their annual Wild Blueberry Festival, but Paradise is just outside of our coverage range (1 hour's drive time from Sault Ste. Marie.) That said, if you're not near Rudyard for that afternoon's Musicians Festival set, this is another valid option! Project 906 have a lot of fun family concerts lined up for August 2018, so visit the above links and their Facebook page for complete details on these and other previously announced dates!

Next up, here's one more concert preview for this weekend, as former Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will play a belated birthday concert at Room 21 in Sault Ontario TONIGHT! Originally scheduled for last night on his birthday proper, this concert was postponed to (Sangria) Saturday due to yesterday's concert from Toronto guitarist Harley Card, which hopefully was a hit! This is Tym's second straight appearance there as the Sangria Saturday headliner, and for the occasion, there will be drink specials and half-price drinks when bought for Tym, so keep those angles in mind, and we do wish Tym a happy birthday as well! This may seem like a quiet weekend for Tym, especially in week one of his Gliss Steak & Seafood hiatus while that venue relocates, but not really, as he actually played an acoustic set on Thursday evening during the Downtown Street Party, playing outside of Tamar's Trends & Flower Shop. Unfortunately, we didn't hear of that set until it was too late to cover here.

I profusely apologize for missing that, but hopefully Tym had a great outdoor set, and we'd have covered it here had it Tym announced earlier than Thursday afternoon! As well, while he's never played Rotaryfest as a solo artist, he will be performing there today as part of the one-off classic rock band The Sun Dogs that's on Stage 1 at 3:00 PM, so look for him at Clergue Park too! As for tonight's Room 21 show, that has no cover charge, a 19+ age limit, and a late 11:00 PM start time, presumably to avoid conflicting with The Stampeders' featured Rotaryfest set. Also today, here's a video of Reading, Pennsylvania technical death metal band Rivers of Nihil from their headlining set at The Rockstar Bar two weeks ago, as live streamed onto promoters Live705's Facebook page! Apologies for the delay in this making the site. While unfortunately filmed on a vertical camera angle, the audio quality is solid, and you do get 25 minutes of the headliners' set to enjoy! Don't let appearances deceive you either, the video's only filmed so distantly for the first 4½ minutes, before the filmer moves to the corner of the stage, which gives a nice angle of Jake's interaction with the front row fans in particular. Give this video a look below!



Finally, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• It looks like reunited local funk/hard rock/improv collective Gianni Gagoots did indeed drop out of the Road Waves concert at LopLops Lounge last Friday, as per their quiet removal from the Facebook event page's description, with no replacement opener stated. This, combined with the second deletion of their Facebook page, does not paint a good picture for their active status, though for what it's worth, they are still listed for the Northern Vibe Festival next month in Ophir (date unclear.) At this rate, I doubt they're playing that event, but stay tuned in case something is said either way!
• Before rocking Spiderfest in Meyersburg once again last week, local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades and their sister band Stegadeth played a concert at The Atria in Oshawa the previous day. Hopefully that concert was a blast, and look for both bands on a local stage near you in the coming weeks!
• As part of this article from The Other Side Reviews featuring performers on the final Vans Warped Tour, an unidentified member of local punk trio Redundant was interviewed briefly about their Warped Tour memories and 2018 plans. Short but sweet promotion! Aside from teasing a possible fall tour, there wasn't anything new to report there. Redundant's one-off Warped Tour date in Toronto took place on Tuesday when they co-headlined the Full Sail Stage to a positive reception, and while copies of their debut EP were reportedly on hand (source here), we have seen no reference to their contents or local availability yet. Stay tuned!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Project 906), This Weekend's Concert Previews, And More!!

Here's our last weekend concert preview post before Rotaryfest next week, and while things are surely quieter than they will be, there's a fair amount of hard rock events this weekend, including a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT and a farewell to a concert venue as we currently know it. There's also a new video to cap things off, but here's what you should know for this weekend's concert previews!

Sault Michigan hard/blues rock quartet Project 906 will return to The Strongs Tavern in nearby Eckerman for one night only THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via it's official Facebook event page yesterday. After taking last week off, 906 are back for another concert at one of their favourite venues on SATURDAY, having last played the Strongs Tavern at last month's Brenda Holmes benefit. This show has no direct theme, though for what it's worth, Project 906 were plugging the softball tournament taking place through the Strongs Tavern in event advertising, and the team search therein, so if there's a reference to softball or an appearance by teams, that's why. SATURDAY NIGHT's concert has a 21+ age limit, a 9:00 PM start time, and no announced cover charge. Don't miss Project 906's hard rocking covers this weekend out west, here they are live, and stay tuned for more on a big festival they're playing again in August!



Next up, we'll move back to previews of concerts that had advance notice, starting with another busy weekend from Sault Ontario hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison, as he has five concerts going down this weekend, including his final Gliss Steak & Seafood concerts at it's current location TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY, plus traditional nighttime gigs at The Road House Bar & Grill TOMORROW and at Room 21 on (Sangria) SATURDAY! With Gliss leaving The Quality Inn later this month and relocating, this weekend's triple-header will be Tym's final bookings at 180 Bay Street as we know it, so come on down to Gliss to help send off Tym and the venue before the big move! For what it's worth, a new restaurant is opening at The Quality Inn in it's place, and a job fair was held yesterday towards hiring new staff, as noted in this SooToday article. Note that one commenter believes that Gliss is moving into the old Cesira's building on Spring Street, though nothing has been confirmed publically, so take that with a grain of salt.

That all said, The Road House and Room 21 aren't going anywhere, so if you're in the east end or downtown, you have some nighttime options to take in Tym's unplugged classic hits tomorrow and Saturday! Tym's Gliss shows are 6:00 PM matinees with no announced age limits, while the Road House and Room 21 shows are 10:00 PM engagements with 19+ age limits, and none of these five shows have an announced cover charge. Lastly for known hard rock concerts this weekend, we'll head to LopLops Lounge TOMORROW NIGHT, where local funk/improv/hard rock band Gianni Gagoots are scheduled to play their first concert of the year as openers for Niagara Falls experimental prog rock quartet The Road Waves! Before I get too deep into this, just a warning that Gianni Gagoots' Facebook page was quietly taken down again for unannounced reasons in recent weeks, which typically isn't a good sign for a band's active status, but event advertising is still promoting this concert with them opening, so I am cautiously still including it in this weekend's previews in case the page's deletion was accidental. Either way, with no other online pages, I had to delete from our active band links, though they'll return if their Facebook page resurfaces. This is (was?) scheduled to be the Gagoots' first show since originally disbanding last fall, and is a relocated sequel to their Like Ten Promotions-held New A show in June 2017.

While not a hard rock band, The Road Waves' creative soundscape will be a nice fit at LopLops tomorrow, and they should deliver another fan favourite set, even if Gianni Gagoots disbanded again! This 19+ show has a 10:00 PM start time, and contrary to initial advertising, there will in fact be a $6 cover charge. We'll close today with a new video from local grindcore solo project Crucify The Whore's Facebook page from May 26th, with project leader Tyler Gibson asking which of his fans would be attending his "future appearances". As it turns out, C.T.W. did play some level of a live concert set at The New American Pub on June 3rd which completely flew under the radar, to the point that I can't find any reference to it outside of the band's and Tyler's personal Facebook pages. Apologies for missing that, hopefully the show went well! The 67 second clip features a facemask-clad Tyler playing an instrumental, and it sounds good for what it is, so check it out below!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Go Skateboarding Day, The Cover-Up, And Gianni Gagoots), And A New Video!!

Here's a new news post for your Wednesday afternoon reading! There is a new video to check out at the end, but this mostly concerns three LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for this summer in Sault Ontario, so without any further adieu, here's what you should know on them!

Two online page-less punk cover groups will join forces on Friday, June 15th, when reunited supergroup The Cover-Up and the sporadically seen Bananas Guerrillas take the stage at LopLops Lounge! This is basically a Redundant-less sequel to LopLops' Punk Covers Night in March, and if you love punk rock classics, this will be an ample chance to see them on stage this summer! Of course, The Cover-Up unite Rising Tide bandmates Dustin Jones and Marshall Jaaskelainen with ex-Lion Ride guitarist Marco Pedalino and K.I.C.K. drummer Aaron Dunn, while The Bananas Guerrillas (a renamed continuation of the Blink-182 tribute from last year's Halloween Party) again feature ex-Stereo North frontman Andrew Pucci and ex-Gnaeus drummer Brendan Garlick in their ranks. Lots of talent between these two bands, so don't miss out on their high impact covers in a couple of weeks! Promoted by Tidal Records (and as announced via their Facebook page), this is a 19+ show with a $5 cover and a 9:00 PM start time.

Coverage of this show would benefit if both bands had more of a presence on social media, but both The Cover Up and The Bananas Guerrillas have promising lineups and setlists (you can find The Cover-Up's on personal Facebook accounts), and hopefully this is a fun night for punk fans! See above for more details, and we're not done with The Cover-Up yet today!

Next up, and for a fourth straight year, local musicians will hit Queen Elizabeth Park for Tidal Records' Go Skateboarding Day festivities on Thursday, June 21st! This is the sixth year for the local independent label's sponsorship of Go Skate Day at the John Rhodes Center-adjacent skate park, and bands are back for another go-around of live music action at the top of the big ramp, so who all is playing this year? Believe it or not, there are no returning bands from the last three years, with the announced lineup including the aforementioned The Cover Up, indie/punk quintet Northwest, "no genre" alt-hard rock trio Handsome Sandwich, and indie/hard rock quartet Id Iota. Stacked lineup with bands who should be a great fit as a soundtrack to the skateboarding action in three weeks time, and it's very surprising that it took this long for Tidal Records owner and Cover-Up frontman Dustin Jones to play at Go Skate Day himself!

Note that Garden of Bedlam (whose final concert to date was Go Skate Day 2015) are depicted on the above poster, but unless I'm completely out of the loop, they're not back together for this year's festivities. Beyond the music, there will be a skateboarding competition, free skate lessons, and assorted vendors and sponsors will be on site as usual. Once again, Go Skateboarding Day is a FREE & ALL AGES outdoor event, so make sure to prepare for any adverse humidity or temperatures if coming out, while everything will start at 3:00 PM. This should be a great union of punk/alt-rock and extreme sports once again, so visit the above links for complete details!

Also today, there's one more new concert to acknowledge on here, as reunited local funk/hard rock/improv collective Gianni Gagoots will return to the stage on Friday, July 13th when they return to LopLops Lounge as openers for Niagara Falls experimental prog rock quartet The Road Waves! This will be the Gagoots' first local concert appearance in over nine months, having abruptly disbanded last fall, before quietly reuniting in February. The sauce masters have kept up the joking Italian lingo and references in posts since, but will they be able to shake off the rust effectively at LopLops in July? We'll find out then! As for the headliners, fans will recognize The Road Waves as headliners at The New American Pub last June (a show that Gianni Gagoots opened and promoted), and with a hybrid sound collecting blues, jazz, and funk rock into a creative improvised arrangement, it'll be neat to see them back on a local stage after over a year away!

No word on if this is show is being promoted by Gianni Gagoots' dormant in-house agency Like Ten Productions or not, but the Facebook event page was launched by the venue. A rare LopLops show with NO COVER, this July 13th event has a 10:00 PM start time and a 19+ age limit. With Gianni Gagoots hyping up 2018 as their year as they come "back to the main land", hopefully this show sees them picking up where they left off last fall, as you should be in for a fun time with all of the improvised rock on hand! We'll close today with a short new video from local alt-punk trio A Dire Setback's YouTube channel, but if you visit their Facebook page, it's nothing new. Bassist Matt Quinn made a cover video for that page featuring a smoky skull apparition and text announcing that they are recording their first album, which you can pre-order at their Patreon page (which is essentially equal to becoming a $10 backer or above there.) More YouTube content is teased, but this clip is cool looking for what it is, and it's nice to see Facebook cover videos getting some more usage! Videos & Updates From Four Different Mikes, And More Recent Notes!!

We're taking a Mike-heavy turn with our final news post of February 2018, as four local hard rock solo artists named Mike are featured in today's post in varying extents! Within, you'll find videos, general updates, and even some shorter updates from a couple of bands with no Mike involved, so here's what you should know, starting with former Din frontman/Haggith drummer Mike Haggith's newest solo original song! Posted to his Facebook page back on February 17th (apologies for the delay), the song is called "Bridges", and it's connected to both his wish to have a bridge to connect everyone he knows and loves that lives far away, while also acknowledging that people in despair can jump off bridges. An acoustic demo via this live performance clip, this is a softer ballad in this form, with Mike using a soft higher vocal register, and it's well performed with good emotion, so fans of Mike's more reserved music should take to this one! Next up, here's some long overdue updates from local solo hard rock musician Mike McCleary (whose new album "Weight of the Truth" was just reviewed on here yesterday, and you can stream via a Facebook video at this link!) On February 11th, Mike launched the Northern Indies Podcast in an effort to help give more Northern Ontario independent musicians and bands a platform to share and promote their music, as well as publicize resources that could benefit independent musicians as they progress in their career. Mike plans to issue bi-weekly episodes of this podcast, with the first mini-episode being on musical resources, and the second being on Bananas Guerrillas frontman Andrew Pucci's solo project. This sounds like a great idea to promote many different artists, but it's still early days for the Northern Indies Podcast, so if you'd like to submit music for future episodes, or perform/be interviewed in one, click here! Transitioning back to Mike's own music, he has posted a couple of live performance videos onto his Facebook page!

Posted two weeks ago, these are solo acoustic renditions of Mike's original songs "The Working Poor" (complete with film grain effects), and as embedded below, "Be Us" from his "Hourglass" EP. The videos lag a bit, so the audio's out of sync with the visuals, but these are solid performance that capture Mike in a raw, casual setting (fitting for laundry day), and both songs are adapted well here! Give these videos a look above and below, and stay tuned for much more from Mike next month!

 
Also today, here's a solo YouTube video from another local guitarist/podcast host named Mike, namely Audiofumes showrunner Mike Cliffe! Posted to his YouTube channel on February 17th, this clip is of Mike working on a solo song named "Zombie Cowgirl Awakes", with him playing multiple acoustic tracks simultaneously via different videos in the same window (the second comes in at 0:26.) I'd have either centered the clips or made them portrait orientation to better fill the video resolution, but for an acoustic prog rock number, this is well played and intricate, so Audiofumes loyalists should like where this is going! Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news iems from the last while, includine one more mini write-up on another Mike! As usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• After an apparent 5 month breakup, local instrumental jam/funk/hard rock quintet Gianni Gagoots have reactivated their Facebook page along with posting a status indicating that they have "been spotted on an ice floe... from an undisclosed location", and "will be back." The status is full of their creative irreverence, and while I have no idea why they disbanded last fall, this is very positive news! The Gagoots are back in our active band links, and stay tuned for more on their 2018 reunion!
• Ex-Skull After Betrayl frontman Mike Vincent has posted three more songs from his planned second solo album onto his Bandcamp page! Entitled "Vitality", "Opprobrious", and "Sentinels", these have some wildly different imagery for the picture on their Bandcamp copies, but fans of Mike's modern technical brutality should enjoy these songs, which continue to be well performed and produced, so give them a listen above, and hopefully there's more coming!
• On Saturday, local punk trio Stegadeth posted four photos onto their Facebook page that heavily imply that they are making studio recordings of some kind. Is a debut album in the works, or are they just making professional studio copies of their original songs? This should be interesting either way, so follow along for updates from Stegadeth's camp as they roll in!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Elements), Our Toystock VI Preview, And A Surprising Band Breakup?!

I had originally planned this post for tomorrow, which includes our Toystock preview and a surprising removal from our active band links, but with a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT hitting the wire for TONIGHT, I've bumped it up to today. With that said, here's what you should know!

Half of local funk/ska/hard rock quartet The Elements will play a special acoustic concert set at Room 21 at 480 Albert Street West TONIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced this morning on the venue's Facebook page, with the band's Facebook page following suit this afternoon. A rare appearance at this intimate unplugged venue for a hard rock-leaning act, TONIGHT'S show will see Elements frontman Rob Speers and guitarist Jesse Cook unite in an unusual musical setting for them, with Rob even breaking out a guitar of his own for their sets. Room 21 have teased many familiar covers for Elements fans, and even suggested that fans may be able to "pick up a mic and sing along", so keep that in mind for TONIGHT as well! Mystery guests are also teased for TONIGHT, with Room 21 specifying that they'll include bandmates of Rob's and Jesse's from Jack Spades and Handsome Sandwich, plus at least one member of Eclipse, so come on out to see who turns up!

Note that the official Facebook event page gives Rob & Jesse's project name as "Kariokeheads Unplugged" (sic), but The Elements promoted this show publically as if it was their own. TONIGHT'S show at Room 21 (the new nightclub above the barbecue restaurant Low & Slow) has a 10:00 PM start time, no announced cover charge, and a 19+ age limit. See the above links for more details on hat should be an intriguing concert TONIGHT, and here's The Elements liv, albeit in full, last year!

Next up, here's our preview a big concert taking place THIS SUNDAY that had lots of advance notice, as the sixth annual Toystock charity concert is fast approaching! Returning for it's third straight year at The Northern Grand Gardens, Toystock VI will once again feature a day's worth of family entertainment to help pile together lots of toy, food, and cash donations to Christmas Cheer, with the Stuff-A-Bus once again returning for the cause too! Santa and Mrs. Claus will stop in to meet the kids (of course, this is ALL AGES), and there will be numerous prize draws, plus food and drinks from the Grand Gardens will also be available. Visit the official Facebook event page for full non-musical details! As usual, Toystock will welcome 10 local music acts in 10 hours on Sunday, and for the first time, the event will welcome back six bands from prior installments, with 4 other groups debuting in the festival on Sunday, so who can you look for in a couple of days' time? As this schedule indicates, Toystock VI will be headlined at 9:00 PM by country rock quartet Bone Yard, in their record fifth appearance at this event and fourth straight as headliners, so country fans won't want to miss them!

1960s-centric classic rock quartet The Peace Vibe will co-headline for a second straight year at 8:00 PM, while inaugural Toystock performers Cherry Crush will finally bring their pop rock covers back for a 7:00 PM set on Sunday, as preceded by blues/country veterans The Algo Rhythms (themselves returnees from 2015's Toystock) and the festival debut of blues musician Paul Dellavedova's solo band at 6:00 & 5:00 PM each. The hard rock portion of the day will see classic/hard rock quartets The 3 Day Millionaires (returning from last year) and Soundcheck (debuting if you discount Mourning Wood sets) at 4:00 & 3:00 PM respectively. The 2:00 PM slot belongs to acoustic country duo The Bearded Lounge in their festival debut, with their set replacing one by sister band Mojo & guest singer Annette Bouchard for unannounced reasons. That said, all of Mojo are in Bone Yard that night, so keep them in mind! Unidentified Case's Music students will also return from last year at 1:00 PM, though I can't confirm their identities.

Toystock VI will open at 12:00 PM on Sunday with the festival debut of The Jeff & Jeff Show, a new acoustic duo featuring Country 104.3 DJ Jeff McNiece, so come early to hear what they have in store! Admission is FREE with a toy, food, or cash donation to Christmas Cheer, and this should be another great holiday concert for fans of all ages to donate to a worthy cause and check out some talented live music! Finally for today, we have a very surprising band to remove from our active band links, they being local improv/jam/hard rock collective Gianni Gagoots. Their Facebook (and only online) page was quietly taken down for unannounced reasons at some point in the past two months, coinciding with the quiet removal of almost all of their official YouTube video uploads, including from their Northern Vibe Festival set in August, none of which being positive for their active status. Debuting last summer, the Gagoots soon became a unique fan favourite attraction at numerous local concerts with their extended instrumental jams, fake Italian stage names, sense of humour, and fan engagement at sets through the OM Sound show in September of this year, with many later concerts being self-promoted through their own Like Ten! Productions Banner. I have no idea what happened to Gianni Gagoots, but everything I've seen pointed to a fun live band that had to be seen in person for the full experience!

Best case scenario is that the page was automatically de-activated like what happened with Destroilet's page earlier this year, but the lack of shows since early September and the video deletions don't paint a positive picture anyway. Hopefully we see Matt, Liam, Josh, Frank, and Bergio out there again in the future, and don't miss Liam's blues/country band The Barn Board Trio! LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The 3 Day Millionaires), New Videos, And More Updates!!

We're back with a new news post for this Labour Day, so what can you find here? Some assorted recent updates, new videos from two talented local hard rock acts, and leading off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next month, so here's what you should know!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires are advertised to return to The Canadian Nightclub for one night only on Friday, September 22nd! Though not yet advertised online by the band themselves (who usually announce gigs in their preceding week), the show is featured on The Canadian's marquee board on the side seen when driving towards Great Northern Road. Unless they have a short notice show over the next two weekends, this will be The Millionaires' first show since making their solo Canadian debut last month, and it's great to see that this venue is continuing their return of cover bar bands on weekends... well, Fridays! As was the case last month, expect no cover charge, a 9:00 PM start time, and a 19+ age limit on the 22nd. See above for more details when they come in, specifically & presumably in two weeks, for The 3 Day Millionaires' upcoming evening of often heavy covers!

Next up, here's some new videos, including our first look at new local indie/hard rock trio Vol. (well, unless you've seen them live already!) Posted to their Facebook page on Thursday, it's a 31 second jam session clip on both a vertical & Dutch camera angle, apparently of the end of a song, and while you don't hear all that much given the length, it has a heavier and faster pace that is reminiscent of frontman Steve Edwards' recent band work. I'm curious to hear more from Vol., which you can do at the Oh!No 2017 Music Festival THIS SATURDAY in Leeburn, but give their first video a look below!



Also today, local funk/hard rock instrumental improv group Gianni Gagoots have lots of new videos to share, as YouTube user Savanna Dee filmed their set at last month's Northern Vibe Festival in Ophir for uploads on her channel last week! Completely titled for the first time that I've seen in online video postings, she filmed the sauce masters playing  "Black Socks & Sandals", "Groove Is In The Heart" by Deee-Lite (albeit vertically filmed), James Brown's "Funky President (People It's Bad)", David Bowie's "Fame" in two parts (the second half is here), the extended jam "Plastic On The Furniture" in two parts (here & here), and the finale, including Gianni Gagoots' polka?! There seems to be perpetual glare from the sun on the stage, helping render both drummers nearly invisible, but these are well recorded otherwise! Low fan turnout close to the stage, but these are predictably fun jams, and from what I can hear, the vocals on covers are either sampled or excellent impersonations. • Jeremy Hannah's new SaultMusicScene promotion agency will finally host it's first concert on Friday, September 15th, namely a customer appreciation event at The Upper Deck Lounge above The Canadian Nightclub. The event will solely feature country acts (The Bearded Lounge and Leslie Cook), but it's great to see Jeremy back promoting events following his Canada Day cancellation, so click here for details on this event if you're up for some country action, free snacks, and a door prize draw!
• Local promoters Live705's planned Garbageface/Pseudo-headlined Halloween concert at The Canadian Nightclub on October 28th has been cancelled, as per the deletion of it's Facebook event page yesterday. A reason for it's cancellation wasn't announced, but it's the second scheduled event from Live705 to be cancelled in the past two weeks, joining last month's Eye of Horus show, and no other concerts of theirs are currently scheduled. Hopefully nothing too serious is up in the Live705/A Dire Setback camp, and that we see the promoters and band out there again soon!
• Barring sudden public activity, we'll be moving former Bear Hunters guitarist Mike Vincent's solo project to our inactive band links tomorrow, as he has not posted a public update since September 5th of last year, when he uploaded his most recent original song "Phases of Pain" to his Bandcamp page (he did not launch a solo Facebook page to go with it at the time.) Mike's a talented artist that was showing lots of growth in his recent original material, and hopefully he revisits or or full band work again when the time is right!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison & Banned), Plus Most Weekend Concert Previews!!

With August drawing to a close and September beginning very shortly, here's most of this weekend's concert previews! Due to it's prominence and Saturday night scheduling, we're holding our Diamond Head preview until tomorrow's post, likely as the headlining topic, so don't worry, it's coming! Leading off today, we have some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, including a couple on SHORT NOTICE, so here's what you should know!

Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock trio Banned will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band only confirmed these shows via their Facebook event page yesterday, and these dates are not listed on the Kewadin entertainment page (the next advertised Northern Pines Lounge bookings there from any band are at month's end.) After an eventful month with shows in Gould City, Sugar Island, and the Soo, Banned will head back to St. Ignace for their first shows at this Kewadin branch this year, and this should be another solid chance to see Alex, Wayne, and Don's fan favourite range of covers, so keep TOMORROW & SATURDAY'S shows in mind if you're in the E.U.P.! Remember, Banned are also scheduled to play this venue in three weeks as well, shows that they announced back in June.

As usual for Banned's trips to a Kewadin Casino lounge, TOMORROW & SATURDAY's concerts will each take place at 9:00 PM, you must be 21 or older to attend, and there are no announced cover charges. Check the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's Banned live!



Next up, we'll move to previously announced concerts (including some upcoming future gigs), as Sault Ontario hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to Gliss Steak & Seafood for three more acoustic solo concerts TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY! This should be another fine way to spend your evening over the Labour Day weekend, but as this weekend's shows straddle both August and September, I'd say it's safe to add Tym's remaining Gliss shows in September to our concert calendar. As such, look for Tym to rock the Quality Inn's house restaurant with thrice-weekly unplugged matinees on September 7th-9th, 14th-16th, 21st-23rd, and 28th-30th as his ongoing arrangement at Gliss marches into the fall. No word yet on shows at other venues this fall, but keep these ones in mind!

This weekend's (and next month's) shows are 6:00 PM events with no announced cover charges or age limits, but remember the locale. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's Tym live!



Other currently known hard rock or metal shows this weekend are exclusively on SATURDAY NIGHT, including the third Bay Mills Bands Together fundraiser concert, as the local charitable promoters will bring their bats to the Bay Mills Ballfield in nearby Brimley, Michigan for a concert and softball tournament! This event is designed to help recent Brimley High School graduate Brandon Mills in his ongoing fight with leukemia, with all proceeds going to him and his family as they continue treatments, so visit this link for more details on Brandon's battle! This unique fundraiser will merge a double elimination softball tournament with a live concert, and for full details on the former aspect (all teams are secured), visit the official Facebook event page. Musically speaking, hard rock quartet Project 906 will headline this event at the on-site pavillion by the waterfront playing at 10:30 PM, while masked local metal quartet Stoned Ape Evolution will make a rare appearance as co-headliners at 9:00 PM (great to see them back!)

Opening bands will include acoustic rock duo Strange Brew and past solo performer Ken Jahnke's new band Damn Jahnkes at 8:00 & 7:00 PM respectively, while a 3 hour open mic block will precede the bands at 3:00 PM. Bay Mills Bands Together III will begin at 8:00 AM with the first softball game of the day, this is definitely ALL AGES, and while there is no cover charge, donations will of course be accepted, and don't forget about planned 50/50 and prize draws for the cause. This sounds like a great and original event to help Brandon in his cancer battle, so check the above links for full details on Saturday's entertainment, and here's Project 906 live!



Finally for today's previews (Diamond Head is coming tomorrow), local funk/hard rock/improv quintet Gianni Gagoots will promote their second show under their Like Ten Productions banner THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, as they open for Montreal jazz/rap/funk band The OM Sound in their return to the Soo at The New American Pub! Announced well in advance back in May, this show comes fresh off of the Gagoots' well received Northern Vibe Festival debut, and this should be another fine chance to check out their creative instrumentals, not to mention an encore from The OM Sound, who memorably headlined Six, Two, Oh.'s Holiday Funk Show in December at the same venue (and featured Gianni Gagoots as one of the opening acts.) The OM Sound's engaging hybrid originals should mesh well with the local openers' harder-edged jams, so keep this show in mind for Saturday as well as the S.S. Soppress lands at The New A for Like Ten's sophomore effort!

There is a $5 cover charge for this 19+ show, which begins at 9:00 PM that night. Whether you're in this for The OM Sound, "the thick funk from the heart of the Great Lakes", or a little bit of everything, this show should be a fine option for genre fans and wearers of black socks & sandals! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Northern Vibe Festival, The Elements, And Tym Morrison)!!

Before we begin this weekend concert preview post, just a heads-up that Sunday night's Eye of Horus concert has apparently been cancelled, as per the deletion of it's Facebook event page by promoters yesterday morning. A reason for the cancellation wasn't publically announced, but hopefully nothing bad happened, I was eagerly awaiting this one! The show had also quietly been moved from The Canadian to The Rockstar Bar before being called off, but that venue never publically acknowledged the show online. Hopefully we hear more from Live705 soon, but in the interim, let's tackle this weekend's previews, including SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

One week removed from their joint Canadian Nightclub concert, indie rock quartet K.I.C.K. and funk/ska/hard rock quartet The Elements will join forces once again to rock LopLops Lounge TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show had been announced since last month on K.I.C.K.'s Facebook page, but The Elements' opening slot was only confirmed on Sunday, albeit with more notice than last week's show had. This should be another solid evening of folk and indie rock originals, as contrasted nicely with some ska-infused heavy originals and covers to "kick" things off, so keep TOMORROW'S K.I.C.K/Elements encore in mind for your weekend plans! For what it's worth, LopLops' website lists Saskatoon folk band The Whiskey Jerks as playing tomorrow instead, who confirm the same on their website, with K.I.C.K. instead opening for B.C. country/blues duo The Chicken-Like Birds (featuring Soo native Ari Lantela.) on Saturday.

So, what's the story with those events? For the latter, Sometimes Ange are now advertised to open for The Chicken-Like Birds (source here), and while The Whiskey Jerks' website still lists a LopLops date tomorrow, K.I.C.K. have advertised TOMORROW'S show since last month without any mention of an out of town headliner. Hopefully nothing bad happened! That all said, expect a $5 cover TOMORROW, as well as a 19+ cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time. Next up, we finally have schedule confirmation for THIS WEEKEND'S third annual Northern Vibe Festival, as Toronto ska punk sextet Adam's Mind and local improv/hard rock instrumental collective Gianni Gagoots will rock the "Forest Stage" at the Hempfest successor festival on SATURDAY! Again, apologies for the short notice, we were waiting for public confirmation of daily schedules before calling anything on here, given that this is a multi-day festival (beginning today with bands starting tomorrow.) After not featuring any punk or hard rock bands in last year's outdoor event on Poplardale Road in nearby Ophir, the SATURDAY lineup will be bookended with bands that fit the SMS well, including the local debut of Adam's Mind, whose lively sound (including three horn players) should appeal to ska fans, two tone and punk alike, at this third-year festival! They're headlining at 11:00 PM, as preceded by Arizona solo guitarist and past Hempfest performer Scott Huckabay at 9:00 PM, and Niagara Falls progressive rock quintet The Road Waves at 7:00 PM, fresh off of their local headliner in June.

Remaining Saturday bands include Toronto reggae/soul trio The Harmonauts at 5:30 PM, the aforementioned K.I.C.K. at 3:30 PM, and Gianni Gagoots (who opened for The Road Waves in June) opening at 1:30 PM, while a Native American Dance Theater troupe from Cedar, Wisconsin will play a special set separately from the musical lineup at 11:30 AM. Tomorrow's abbreviated four band lineup will feature Sudbury bluegrass band Murder Murder alongside local openers Frank Deresti & The Lake Effect, The Steeltown Playboys, and The Shannon Moan Trio, while the separate "River Stage" will feature DJs and turntablists (local or otherwise) all festival long, including such familiar faces as DJ Spruceau & The Dub Selectah, while magician Ryan McFarling will also make the rounds to entertain festival goers. Sounds stacked to me, so visit the official website for more on all of this year's musical entertainment! Art installations, food trucks, and vendors will also be on hand all weekend long, and yes, camping is available on site for all of you fans staying multiple nights!

Tickets for the entire weekend are $90 or $60 for just SATURDAY, and while this may seem expensive, look at all you'll be getting this weekend! You can buy tickets online at this link or in person at Planetary Pride on Queen Street East, The Vape Escape on MacDonald Avenue, The Plant Farm Company on Third Line West, or presumably at the gate in Ophir, though note that there's no listed 2 day price for Friday & Saturday. This sounds like a great way to kick off year #3 of the Northern Vibe Festival, and with a little more of a ska/punk angle on SATURDAY, don't bypass all of this weekend's action if you can help it! Finally for today's preview post, prolific hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to The Barrelhouse Wine & Whiskey for another solo acoustic concert THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, joining his ongoing Gliss Steak & Seafood matinees TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY! Apologies for the short notice on the Barrelhouse show, it was only announced via it's official Facebook event page yesterday. Staying very busy with his weekly Gliss trifecta as well as recent Monday and Tuesday night appearances at Mark's Breakfast Plus, SATURDAY's return to the Queen Street East tapas restaurant will mark Tym's first traditional Saturday night concert set there in three weeks, so if you're craving some acoustic hard rock cover favourites, be there or at The Quality Inn's house restaurant over the next three evenings! This weekend's Gliss shows are 6:00 PM events with no age limit, while the Barrelhouse show on SATURDAY is at 10:30 PM with a 19+ age limit.

This Weekend's Hard Rock Concert Previews, Including Lita Ford & Great White!!

Another weekend of concert previews is here, so what do we have to hype up with only a week to go before Canada Day? Shockingly, no short notice events (yet?), but there's a fair amount of intriguing concerts going down over the coming days, including a huge outdoor event in the E.U.P., so here's what you should know in rough chronological order!

We'll start at The New American Pub TOMORROW NIGHT, where local instrumental jam/hard rock quintet Gianni Gagoots will return to the stage as openers for Niagara Falls experimental prog rock quartet The Road Waves! Last seen opening for The Hazytones at this venue two months ago, this will be the Gagoots' first concert appearance since announcing that they were self-promoting concerts of theirs under the Like Ten Productions banner. This creative union of Redefined, Sailor's Tongue, and Rising Tide alumni should have another creative set of instrumental funk and jam rock in store, so don't miss out tomorrow at The New A! As for The Road Waves, they don't quite cross the hard rock line, but their own improvised, ever-changing, and creative original jams should attract a solid audience tomorrow in the second stop of their summer tour, so keep them in mind as well! Next up, the ever-prolific Tym Morrison will continue his ongoing weekly concert arrangement at Gliss Steak & Seafood with two more acoustic solo matinee gigs TOMORROW & SATURDAY! With a likely return to thrice-weekly gigs there coming in the near future, Tym's unplugged hard rock covers don't appear to be solely a two night affair for too much longer, so if you can make it down to The Quality Inn's house restaurant tomorrow or on Saturday evening, expect more solid renditions from this prolific veteran artist! As usual for Tym's long-term run at Gliss, expect 6:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and no age limits, but remember that this is a sit-down restaurant, not a typical nightclub venue. Also, here's this weekend's arguable main event, as former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford and Los Angeles hard rock legends Jack Russell's Great White will play a special outdoor concert at the Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace, Michigan THIS SATURDAY NIGHT to kick off the venue's summer concert series! The other events in the series are August's Josh Turner concert and demolition derby. A rare major Kewadin headlining concert to not take place at the Dreammaker's Theater in the Soo, fans should take to the regional debut of Lita Ford, whose solo hits like "Kiss Me Deadly", "Hungry", and "Close My Eyes Forever" should rock the stage on the shores of Horseshoe Bay on Saturday night, so don't miss out on her set!  Lita was promoted to headliner last week after April Wine were forced to drop out due to frontman Myles Goodwyn falling ill, so the Jack Russell-led version of Great White will step in to replace them on Saturday, with classics like "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "The House of Broken Love" in the repertoire.

Though this isn't the version of Great White that played Sault Michigan in 2009 (they've had an L.A. Guns-like split in two since), frontman Jack Russell is back from that event, and the original voice of Great White and his new band should deliver for fans on Saturday night! Finally for today's concert previews, THIS SATURDAY NIGHT will also play host the Sault Ontario debut of all-female Barrie hardcore punk quartet Beaver Slap when they rock The Rockstar Bar! The show was quietly moved upstairs from The Algonquin Pub on Sunday for unannounced reasons, as per promoters Six, Two, Oh. on the Facebook event page, so ignore the venue listed on the poster. This concert should provide a quality showcase for Beaver Slap's aggressive brand of old school hardcore punk with some noise and crust rock touches for good measure, so don't miss out on the ladies as they take the stage on Saturday night! Only two bands are opening this one, including Six, Two, Oh.'s resident doom/sludge metal trio AlgomA in their second ever Rockstar Bar appearance and first concert anywhere since their European tour in the spring, while local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades will play their second show with their new lineup and their first Rockstar Bar set in well over nine months as well, last seen there opening for SNFU.

Solid choices to open, including a rare appearance by Jack Spades at an event not promoted by frontman J.D. Pearce, so don't be late for the local openers! Notably the first ever Rockstar Bar concert promoted by Six, Two, Oh., this event has a $7 cover charge, a 19+ age limit, and a 9:00 PM start time.
