LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Hells Bells & Tym Morrison), More Concert Previews, And Recent Updates!!

Tonight's post wraps up this weekend's hard rock concert previews, with the major exception of Toystock, which gets an extended look on the SMS tomorrow! For now, we also have some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (one on SHORT NOTICE), plus recent updates, so here's what you should know! 

Joining his previously announced Fraternal Order Of Eagles Club concert TOMORROW NIGHT, local classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will also rock Misty's Fifties TOMORROW with a matinee gig prior! Apologies for the short notice, I had held off on adding Tym's end-of-year gigs to our listings when there weren't any other concerts of note to add to our listings, but I forgot to add them before tomorow's was short notice. In terms of Tym's lengthy relationship with Misty's, fans will be able to catch the former Caveman Morrison frontman at the Second Line West nightclub TOMORROW and then thrice next month (December 6th, 20th, and 27th), all also Saturday matinees. Busy end of year for Tym, so don't miss out on his final four Misty's gigs this year, not to mention tomorrow night's Eagles Club show, as he plays his final double header of 2025, so he'll be heading to Steelton after things wrap up at Misty's.

Tym ends 2025 back at The Eagles Club on New Year's Eve, for the record. TOMORROW'S and next month's Misty's shows are all 4:00 PM events, tomorrow night's show at Aerie #3991 is at 8:00 PM, the Misty's gigs are likely 19+, and none have an announced cover charge. Next up, Barrie-based AC/DC tribute band Hells Bells will return to Sault Ste. Marie on Friday, April 10th at The Sault Community Theatre Centre! One of a handful of different AC/DC tribute bands to play here over the years, local fans will have last seen them as original AC/DC frontman Dave Evans' backing band in May 2019 at The Rockstar Bar, where they also played an opening set on their own accord, but they last played a full headlining date of their own here in 2015. Definitely moving up in the world to book the former Kiwanis Theater, and it will be interesting to see how big of a crowd packs White Pines for their brand of high voltage rock n' roll in the spring! This show has a 7:30 PM start time, it is definitely all ages, and tickets are now on sale for a flat $45.20 at this link, with all rows having seats available at press time. Also, let's resume this weekend's hard rock concert previews by heading to Soo Blaster, where local party metal trio The Apocalypse Afterparty will once again be the rock outliers on an otherwise all-hip hop concert TOMORROW, this time headlined by Guelph rapper Robbie G! This is effectively the sequel to Robbie G's shows here in April and in 2023 that The A.A. also opened for, not to mention the Tech N9ne, Madchild, and Afroman shows where Robbie and the band's paths also crossed. Clearly, these rap bookings for The Apocalypse Afterparty are going well, and hopefully they carve out another solid niche and make some more cross-genre fans tomorrow night with the double bass attack! Paul, Amanda, and Mikhal remain unacknowledged on the Facebook event page despite ample social media promotion on personal accounts (clearly they are the "& more"), but former As It Stands/Sault Side Squad frontman Justin "Nadj" Pregent is hosting.

Also performing tomorrow are Southern Ontario rappers M For The Movement with Capital "A" Plus and Lumberjack Pat, local MC Bold Noize, unspecified rappers from No Filter Records, and KG Tha SunGod. This is an all ages concert taking place tomorrow at 8:00 PM, and base tickets are $20 at this link or at the door, with VIP packages also available. If you like rap, there will be a lot of strong MCs here dropping rhymes, with a bit of a rock chaser from The Apocalypse Afterparty, so visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's the band live!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or venue name:

 

• Sault Michigan hard rock trio (and Tarnished's all-original side project) Crush's most recent concert was out of town, as they opened for Tribe989 at Benet's Benefit Ride at the Bluegill Festival Pavilion in St. Helen (2 hours south of here) on November 8th. Not a lot was said about it on social media from what I found, but hopefully Crush and crew had a great show for the cause! 
• In a post on their Facebook page on Wednesday, The Algonquin Hotel's upstairs nightclub The Rockstar Bar revealed that they're looking for a DJ to work weekends there, and to send contact information if you're interested. Comments inquiring if the 864 Queen Street East venue was re-opening were not denied, so could we be seeing The Rockstar Bar opening to normal service for the first time since the summer of 2022? They spent the past 3+ years only hosting occasional private and ticketed events, as Silent 9 know well. This is encouraging news for sure, so we'll have to see what The Rockstar Bar has in store for 2026!
• I have replaced the link for 2012-2018 local hard rock quintet Skeyes of Seven from their (sadly) now deleted Facebook page to their still-up Bandmix page. Successors to the late 2000s hard rock band Sense of Truth, Skeyes of Seven had a lot of promise and solid original material, but only played five sporadic concerts. Don't miss Cory in Bullet Train or Alain & Johnny in Half Past nowadays though!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Silent 9, Double Down, And Generations) & Weekend Concert Previews!!

This weekend is a tad busier for hard rock concerts in Sault Ste. Marie, so our preview of Saturday's Selias concert will be in tomorrow's post. With that said, today's focuses on covers-leaning bands, including LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, some on SHORT NOTICE, so here's what you should know as we enter mid-November!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Double Down will return to Jay's Piston Broke Pub for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! In a way, I apologize for the short notice, but these shows have been announced since August via their Facebook event page. I erroneously listed them for next weekend when we first covered them, despite knowing that they are playing at The Water Tower Pub next Friday. That's on me, I'm sorry, but at least I caught the error! TOMORROW & SATURDAY's shows will end a month-long break for this skilled veteran outfit, last playing at Jay's over the October 11th weekend, and they should have a good array of classic and hard rock covers in store for west end fans! As has been the case for all of their fall dates so far, bassist Dan Beaupre will be absent as he continues recovering from an undisclosed ailment, so his "stunt double" (Mid Life Crysis bassist Lori Reinholtz) will be back for both nights.

Lori has played all but one of Double Down's concert weekends so far since they ended their summer break, and she has fit in well with the Syrettes and Ric, so hopefully things go well again TOMORROW & SATURDAY, and that Dan gets better soon! These shows are at 9:30 PM with 19+ age limits and no cover charges as usual. Visit the above links for more details, and here's Double Down live!

Next up, fellow local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations will return to the stage THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at Beck's Bar! Again, apologies for the short notice, drummer Tony Santoro only announced this show via the band's Facebook group on Monday. Last seen at The Water Tower Pub two weeks ago, this marks just their second show at the Goulais Avenue nightclub, last playing there in June. SATURDAY'S concert also marks the debut of their new guitarist, as veteran local musician Joe Miller has joined Generations, replacing the already-departed Tony Kajnar. Joe has been a presence in the scene dating back four decades, and while blatant credits for his band work aren't easy to find on social media, hopefully he fits in well with Valerie, Pierre, and Tony S. on SATURDAY! The matinee act that evening at Beck's is new local duo Silver Strings, who are not "opening" for Generations, and have their own full timeslot from 3:00-7:00 PM.

This is a one-nighter as usual for Beck's, but that's just as well for singer Valerie Powley, as she will be judging the finals of this year's The Soo's Got Talent tomorrow at Soo Blaster. We didn't cover it this year because it was full-on karaoke for 2025, partially thanks to it's The Voice-inspired audition rounds, but note that Convergence frontman Stephen Gagnon-Ruscio is one of this year's six finalists. Good luck to him and the other finalists tomorrow! Generations' Beck's concert on SATURDAY is at 9:00 PM with a 19+ age limit and no cover charge. Also, local classic/hard rock cover quartet Silent 9 will rock The Esquire Club TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, but that's not all for them in 2025! While their website's calendar only lists three private gigs for the rest of 2025 (making this weekend's shows their last traditional bar gigs of the year), one of them isn't as private as you may think. On Friday, December 5th, you can see Jess, Ryan, Paul, and Steve set up shop at The Rockstar Bar when they headline the Searchmont Ski Runners' holiday mixer! This may sound odd, but they did the honours for the S.S.R.'s fall social in October 2023, which also took place at The Rockstar Bar, which remains available to host special ticketed or private events, but has been closed as a standard nightclub since mid-2022. Despite the band claiming it's private, the Ski Runners' Facebook page is publically advertising the mixer, which is a fundraiser for the youth alpine skiing organization.

Sounds like a fun time for a worthy cause, so keep this in mind if you want to support the Ski Runners and/or enjoy an all-too rare Rockstar Bar concert! Tickets run for $35 but that also enters you into a contest to win passes to Searchmont, and you can buy tickets for this 19+ event at 7:30 PM at this link. Before then, they wrap up their normal nightclub slate for 2025 tomorrow & Saturday at The Esquire Club, so don't miss Silent 9's crowd and party-friendly mix of rocking covers this weekend! Finally for this preview post, veteran local classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison is slated to rock The Fraternal Order of Eagles Club on Wellington Street West on SATURDAY NIGHT! Before we get too far, just a note that Tym was originally advertised to be playing the matinee timeslot at Beck's Bar on Saturday himself, but the venue is listing the aforementioned Silver Strings from 3:00-7:00 PM that day. A reason for Tym's withdrawal from the Beck's booking was not publically announced, but his batch Facebook event page for shows there still lists this Saturday's matinee. He is currently slated to return to the former Vibe Lounge as their matinee performer next Sunday, so I'll let you know if that goes on as planned! And no, Tym's not in Silver Strings, here's a video of them from earlier this year. While Tym has pulled double duty for his solo acoustic act in the past, he'll just be rocking Aerie #3991 on Saturday night.

Regardless of venue or timeslot, Tym's prolific setlist and clear-as-day talents as a vocalist and guitar player will bode well for attendees at the Eagles Club on Saturday, so don't miss out! If you do however, he'll be back in two weeks. As usual there, this is an 8:00 PM start time, no cover, and no advertised age limit. See above for more details, and here he is live!

Talk Shit/Nebraska Arms Video Showcase!!

Today's post spotlights videos on a YouTube channel brought to my attention last month when the channel's owner filmed an unlisted video at a recent concert, and while I don't share/post unlisted videos here without the video(s) in question being publically shared in some form, the channel in question has a bunch of public SMS-relevant videos! The channel (named Skwunch) is owned by Honest Work/ex-Nebraska Arms drummer Adam Sauve, and his bands have been featured in uploads for the past decade. How did I not know about it before now? Not counting his 2014 re-posting of Nebraska Arms playing "Lighthouses" at The Speak Easy (first uploaded to guitarist Wayne Watkins' own channel in 2008), Adam's first unique videos of one of his bands came in 2015, when he posted two videos of his now-defunct punk band Talk Shit playing two jam session covers.

These two videos feature Adam alongside guitarist Marc LaFrance and bassist Ian Robinson, and they seem to have been filmed before Steve Shaw replaced the long-since-relocated Andrew Angelic on guitar. Uploaded over a year before Talk Shit ended their 7 year hiatus from live gigs, the videos feature the guys covering NOFX's "Linoleum" and as embedded below, Propagandhi's "A Speculative Fiction". Very cool hearing Propagandhi covered by a local band, for the record! Adam sings here, and while they're obviously short-handed, these rough jam covers aren't bad for what they are, though the cymbals are way too loud in the recording. Next up, Adam belatedly posted a video in 2019 of Talk Shit's second reunion-era concert set, where they were among the performers at the first Guy Thiffault memorial concert at The Rockstar Bar in December 2016! Steve was now in the group, but Guy's old Bondar bandmate Mark Rand (now of Cross Dog) filled in for Ian here for unannounced reasons. An attendee filmed the guys covering Guy's old band The Hangdowns' song "Separation Anxiety", and this is a fun rendition with lots of impromptu guest vocals from Guy's friends and old bandmates, as filmed from a close spot on the floor. Good stuff that Guy would have been very proud of, so give Talk Shit's Hangdowns cover a watch below!

Today's other two videos are also from the 2016 Guy Thiffault tribute concert, but were filmed from a far more distant stationary camera angle, and were surprisingly only posted onto Adam's channel in December of last year. One is of Talk Shit covering NOFX's "Don't Call Me White", and if you just want to hear Steve, Marc, Ian, and Mark rocking out, this will do the trick! The audio quality makes up for how far away the stage is given where this camera was set up, but you do get a sense of the solid turnout for this memorial concert, and a nice reminder of the holiday season given the obvious Christmas tree in the lower right. Strong cover with Steve acquitting himself well vocally, so check it out below!

We'll close today with a band that actually played earlier that evening at The Rockstar Bar, namely 2008-2010 indie punk quartet Nebraska Arms, who Guy also fronted and played bass for in their original run. It was nice to see Adam and guitarists Wayne Watkins & Dave Prendergast bring the group back for a night in Guy's memory! Mark Rand filled in on bass here too, while Wayne sang lead, a'la The Northwest. During their short reunion set, Nebraska Arms were filmed playing their original song "I Was A Writer", and while the same visual deficiencies exist for this video, it's a solid performance of this melodic punk original from their heyday, especially given the circumstances. New Videos From Late 2023 Of Fuller & Silent 9!!

Before we begin this post, I wanted to offer our deepest condolences to the family & friends of veteran Toronto punk bassist Phil Page, who passed away earlier this week, as per numerous personal Facebook postings. While not a local musician, Phil was known to many in the local punk scene via his friend and long-time bandmate Mikey Hawdon, with the two collaborating musically for the past 15 or so years during Mikey's time living in Southern Ontario. SMS readers will best recognize Phil as the bassist in Mikey's first Ramones tribute band The Merves, who played five concerts in the Soo from 2010-2015 before reuniting at Soo Blaster in November during Mikey's pre-wedding concert. Original music-wise, Phil played with Mikey in The Fairmounts, who came here for a single show at The Algonquin Pub in 2012. Mikey also drummed in Phil's band Teenage X, who I don't believe ever played up here.

Phil was also known from GTA bands like The Outbred Inlaws and The Downbelows, and was also an avid skateboarder. My interactions with Phil during his local concerts were limited, but he was a good man and a proud father, and my thoughts are absolutely with his wife Hollie and their kids at this difficult time. If you're a fan of modern skate punk and/or The Ramones, do check out Phil's back catalog to hear some very solid performances both on stage and in studio. R.I.P. Phil!

Today's post otherwise focuses on new videos, and we'll actually start with another ex-bandmate of Mikey Hawdon's, namely his old Lion Ride/Detroit cohort Mark Rand & his emo/punk band Fuller, who reunited after an 18-ish year hiatus for a one-off concert at LopLops Lounge in December! As I noted in our post last week about Jimmy Polnick's live-streams from that night, the Facebook event page saw an abnormal usage as a bulletin board for videos from the event (remember, the bands that night either don't have a Facebook page or barely post on theirs), with two more attendees posting videos there from the show! Ashley Lace also filmed Fuller's entire set for the event page, posting her footage on January 2nd. Now, her videos were split in two chunks (the second video begins with their Moneen cover with guest vocalists), but thankfully, hers were shot horizontally!

It's always more ideal to shoot a band in landscape orientation, so kudos to Ashley for going widescreen for her footage! Even beyond that, I'd say that her videos are better quality for visuals and audio than Jimmy's, but of course, thanks to both for filming everything that they did! I won't do another blow by blow of the set, as I covered that ground last week, but definitely give Ashley's Fuller videos a watch above & below!

The other video was posted by Mark on New Year's Eve, but was shot by his wife & Cross Dog bandmate Tracy Ashenden. It features their last song (whose name was obscured in the setlist picture from his personal Facebook page), which was more of an extended jam compared to what came before it. Tracy got more of a central angle than what Ashley filmed concurrently, and while the audio is a little muffled by comparison, you can't go wrong with the crystal clear visuals and horizontal orientation! It does feel like there was a stabilization setting added to it, based on how some of the motion looks, but it's another solid video, so throw back to Fuller's long awaited return concert again below!

We'll close with a new video from local classic/hard rock cover quartet Silent 9's Facebook page! Filmed at one of their Rockstar Bar fundraiser gigs from late last year (they did not specify which one), the video features guitarist Ryan Robb playing 19 seconds of the guitar solo from their cover of Metallica's cover of Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey In The Jar". Note the fan laying on his back giving "moral support", which hopefully was sent accurately! The drums are a little loud given the camera setup and focus on the guitarist, but what we see is well performed, so give it a look for yourselves below!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Soundcheck, Generations, Double Down, And Silent 9!!)

Quite a backlog is developing on the SMS that I blame partially on holiday season commitments (I'm not even in town writing this), so let's try and remedy some of that today with a post solely devoted to LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS! All involve veteran cover rock bands playing what could end up being their last shows of the year, so here's what you should know!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Silent 9 have announced their first shows for early 2024, but before then, you can see them at least one more time this month! The band did announce that their final 2023 dates would be private events, but that isn't true in one case, as they will return to The Algonquin Hotel (likely upstairs at The Rockstar Bar) on Friday, December 15th! The event is not a standard concert, rather a fundraising pub for Soo City United girls soccer teams (specifically the teams for next season whose players have 2010 or 2011 birth years). Despite Silent 9 saying that this is private, the Facebook event page is public, and prospective attendees are welcome to buy a ticket to support the local girls soccer program. The holiday theme is via an ugly sweater party, so bring your ugliest Christmas sweater to fit in for the festivities! No word on if there will be a contest for the ugliest one of all or not.

This is presumably a 19+ event, and tickets are on sale for $35 (if you're unable to attend, but wish to support the teams, they recommend $20 donations). Scan the QR code on the poster to be sent to a ticket sale page! This event is not entirely new territory for Silent 9, as they played at the Searchmont Ski Runners' fall social at The Rockstar Bar (which has been opening sporadically for one-off bookings this year) in October, and this appears to be along those lines. Hopefully it goes swimmingly for Jess, Ryan, Paul, and Steve in a couple of weeks, see above for more details, and look for more on Silent 9's 2024 schedule soon!

Next up, fellow local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations will end their recent break from the stage when they return to Shooters Downstairs Lounge for one night only on Friday, December 29th! First announced by Shooters in this updated concert calendar posting on their Facebook page on Tuesday, this will be Generations' first show since playing at Jay's early last month, and their first gig at Shooters since mid-October. No word on why they're in the midst of a near two months-long break, but if you want to see the band (sans guitarist Tony Kajnar) before then in bluesier confines, all will be at Soo Blaster one week from Friday as part of this year's Blues For Food fundraiser! Pierre and Tony S. are joining past Generations fill-in guitarist Mike McDonald as part of the one-off Mudfoot Mike & The Muckrakers, with Valerie and fellow fill-in guitarist Michael Yurich among the guest performers. Meanwhile, Generations' Shooters show is a one-nighter due to the Dennis Street nightclub's continuation of DJs on most Saturdays. Expect a 9:00 PM-ish start time, 19+ age limit, and no cover charge. If you;ve missed seeing Generations' classic and hard rock cover selection as of late, keep their final show of the year in mind later this month, and do consider attending Blues For Food if you want to support both St. Vincent's Place and the Soup Kitchen at this needy time of year!

Also that same weekend, local classic/hard rock cover quartet Double Down will reportedly return to The Esquire Club for concerts on December 29th & 30th! These were announced in a concert calendar post on the venue's Facebook page on Thursday, despite Double Down announcing on their Facebook page on November 21st that their shows at Reggie's on November 24th-25th were their "last gig(s) of 2023". I have no idea whether the Esquire Club bookings came late or if they're incorrect/now cancelled, but if someone publically confirms that Double Down are not playing there at month's end, we will let you know! The band's full lineup will presumably be present if things are a go, as bassist Brad Stephen had to miss their Reggie's concerts this past weekend for unannounced reasons. Sidekicks bassist Dan Beaupre (who played in 100 Gran with singer/guitarist Joel Syrette) filled in for both shows.

Dan's a very skilled bassist with hard rock experience, so I'm sure he fit in just fine with Double Down at Reggie's! If Double Down are playing at The Esquire Club at month's end, it will be their first ever weekend there, after dropping out of planned gigs there in September, but note that the band never promoted the bookings online. We'll let you know if things get clarified the other way, but expect 9:00 PM start times, no cover charges, and 19+ age limits. Visit the above links for more details!

Finally for today, fellow local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will cap off 2023 by toplining a  New Year's Eve party on Sunday, December 31st at... the Delta Hotel?! Concerts at the waterfront hotel at 208 St. Mary's River Drive are not completely uncommon, as the then-Holiday Inn hosted Bon Soo's Battle of the Bands back in 2007, but it is definitely not a venue used with any regularity for public concerts. On the side of New Year's parties, Soundcheck are no strangers to rocking out on December 31st, having done so at Shooters last year (back when Shooters booked bands on most Saturdays), but this will hew closer to the New Year's party that Soundcheck toplined at The Water Tower Pub in 2019. This ain't just a concert, as paid attendees will get a full course dinner, cocktails, a cash bar, and discount rates on hotel rooms if you are so inclined. Needless to say, attendees will be ringing in 2024 in style!

This 19+ event starts at 5:00 PM with Soundcheck's set beginning and 8:00 PM, and semi-formal/dress attire is encouraged given the locale and amenities. As such, the ticket price is a whopping $100, and limited tickets are available, so contact the Delta A.S.A.P. if this interests you! Granted, this will be above the price range for many, but if you want to go all out for the holiday, this would be a fancy way to do it, and Soundcheck's hard and classic rock covers would be a fine soundtrack throughout! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Matthew Good & The Nameless) Plus New Videos!!

Before we resume weekend concert previews by looking at Sunday's tenth annual Toystock, let's address some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS and new videos from both sides of the border. Here's what you should know!

Sault Michigan hard rock cover quintet The Nameless will play their last show of the year on Sunday, December 31st when they rock a New Year's Eve party at The Merchants Bar! Last seen at the same venue for their Halloween party last month, this will be their third gig at The Merch in the fall/winter, so this is developing into their favourite local venue, The Merch's lack of Facebook posts about scheduled concerts acknowledged. No word yet on holiday frills for the occasion, but surely there will be something for New Years revelers to ring in 2024 with beyond just alcohol and live music. Hopefully The Nameless deliver a solid night of hard rocking covers next month, so don't miss out! This is a 21+ event with a 9:00 PM start time and no announced cover charge. Next up, Coquitlam, British Columbia alternative rock musician and political activist Matthew Good will make his long awaited return to Sault Ontario on Thursday, April 25th when he headlines at The Machine Shop! This concert comes over four years (exactly 213 weeks, in fact) since Matthew's planned show at The Sault Community Theatre Centre in March 2020, which was one of the first casualties of the pandemic lockdown-related cancellations that spring. As such, this will be Matthew's first local date since his infamous acoustic gig at The Speak Easy in October 2007, which I won't rehash here, but click here for both sides of that dispute. 16+ years later, it seems clear that Matthew wants to let bygones be bygones with Sault Ste. Marie, so hopefully he'll break out hit Matthew Good Band & solo songs like "Load Me Up", "Hello Time Bomb", and "Weapon" for local fans!

Replacing Ria Mae as the opening act in April is Guelph hard rock solo artist Vilivant, who notably dropped out of this past Tuesday's Big Wreck show & its tour due to logistical issues. Clearly those are lesser/nonexistent with Matthew's tour, and it'll be good to see Vilivant here at last! Presented by Cabin Media Entertainment, tickets for this all ages show went on sale this morning at this link, and they run for $44.50 (first 100 seats), $54.50 (later buyers), and $64.50 (balcony), all with the usual online processing fees. Hopping back over to Sault Michigan briefly, here's a new live-streamed promo video for local metal trio Tarnished's concerts at The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT, as per the band's Facebook page earlier today! The 72 seconds-long video was shot with drummer Josh Fair's cell phone, but be advised that as the video started filming while vertical, it didn't matter when he flipped it horizontally, so it's both vertical and sideways. Otherwise, the video features Alex, Parker, and Josh hyping up TONIGHT & TOMORROW'S concerts, and while we don't learn much new from them, it does mark the first time that we've heard Parker speak on camera in official Tarnished media. While we're on the subject, it's as good a time as any to remind readers that the recent departures of guitarist Nathan Webber & bassist Isaac Royer were amicable, and we have photo proof!

The band posted pictures on their Facebook page last Wednesday of Isaac and his replacement Parker squaring off in a bass duel! Amusing pictures, and proof that there were no hard feelings behind the lineup split and Nathan & Isaac forming Double Jack afterwards. Check those out above, and give their promo video for this weekend's Kewadin gigs a watch below!

Finally for today, I wanted to embed this video proper on the SMS due to it being new footage of a prominent local band, but uploader Mandi Dolle made it age restricted, and thusly, it's not viewable when embedded on external websites. The only questionable thing for content is swearing in the lyrics, but I've heard much worse from other local concerts, so who is to say why that choice was made for this video. Mandi uploaded this video in June, and it features Sault Ontario crossover thrash band Jack Spades (now the Barrie-based Spades GT) covering The Inner City Surfers' "Commandments", which later appeared on 2015's "Fed Up!" split in studio form. As far as I can tell, this video was shot at The Rad Zone's 30th anniversary bash at The Rockstar Bar on October 11th, 2014, where they played alongside The Ripcordz, Destroilet, and DJ Seith. I reviewed this concert for the SMS, which you can read at this link.

Jack Spades' classic 2013-2016 lineup is present for this video, with current frontman J.D. Pearce joined by guitarist Tiffany Stocco (now of Sudbury's Knuckle City Dusters), Bear Hunters bandmates Justin Lam & Johnny Belanger, and Johnny's Handsome Sandwich bandmate Jesse Cook. Kudos to Mandi for uploading this after so long, and while the overly red lighting doesn't help the visual quality, Jack Spades sound good as you'd expect, let alone from the rare sight of a local band covering another local band! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The Wyld Stallyns & Soundcheck), Plus Silent 9 Updates!!

Today's post is mostly devoted to newly announced events at Shooters Downstairs Lounge, who unveiled announced a pile of upcoming concerts (primarily from cover bands) through early December via a series of Facebook event pages launched on Friday, so what should you know from these new dates, and a show missed from another band playing there? 

Not counting the Generations and Bone Yard shows on October 13th & 20th (which the bands in question already announced), the next new shows will see local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck return to the Dennis Street nightclub on Friday, October 27th & Saturday, October 28th! Yes, Shooters has been hosting DJs on Saturdays over the fall season, but it looks like they're pausing that experiment for one week, as two separate Facebook event pages (here and here) were posted for both nights. Based on the advertising, the split event pages appear to reflect a Halloween theme on Saturday the 28th, but this isn't the Halloween party at Shooters, details forthcoming. Last seen at Shooters a month ago, hopefully Soundcheck (one word) deliver the classic and hard rock goods to send out the month with, and one assumes that costumes are welcomed on the Saturday! That said, they're not done at Shooters for 2023 after that weekend.

The guys will return to the lounge for one night only on Friday, December 1st in the last of the new Shooters announcements. The holiday season will be in full swing by then, so consider warming up with Soundcheck's rocking covers then! All three shows are 9:00 PM affairs with 19+ age limits and no cover charges. Next up, the Halloween party at Shooters will take place on Tuesday, October 31st when they welcome local funk/hard rock sextet The Wyld Stallyns to the stage! After rocking The Whisky Barrel over Halloween weekend last year (albeit without publically promoted Halloween ties), The Stallyns will topline a legit Halloween party with a costume contest, drink specials, late hours for the on-site kitchen, and more. Fans may recall their old sister band The Elements playing multiple Halloween events (often in themed sets), but hopefully The Wyld Stallyns' wide-ranging and fan-friendly covers find a willing audience to cap off the spooky season! Just a shame that Halloween is a Tuesday this year given many attendees' work and school hours. Also, The Stallyns will return to Shooters on Friday, November 10th for a standard concert, so if the Halloween trappings do nothing for you, keep that in mind for a traditional night out!

Like with Soundcheck, expect a 19+ age limit and 9:00 PM start time for both dates, and there is no announced cover charge for either, but have cash on hand on Halloween just in case. Visit the official Facebook event pages linked here & here for more details!

The other upcoming shows at Shooters are either already announced by the band in question (i.e. Bone Yard) or not from hard rock leaning bands (Lime on November 3rd), but I did want to bring up newer classic/hard rock cover quartet Silent 9, who return to Shooters on November 17th. You may have seen Facebook "stories" and posts in the past day that show them performing at The Rockstar Bar, a venue that hasn't hosted a public concert since June of last year, so what's going on? Well, despite not posting on their Facebook page in over two weeks, this distinct new band did indeed play at The Algonquin Hotel's dormant upstairs nightclub last night, in a show that was advertised on their website but not elsewhere. This was the Searchmont Ski Runners' fall social, which served as a fundraiser for the alpine ski racing non-profit group. Yes, this was publically attendable with $35 tickets.

I profusely apologize for missing this show on the SMS, but alas, I never thought to look on Silent 9's website for shows that Facebook never listed. The Rockstar Bar proper did not acknowledge the event either, having not announced any events in well over a year, and a teased re-opening in the spring did not occur as planned. One would assume that Algonquin Hotel staff would have announced a formal re-opening, so was the fall social a one-off booking? It seems like it, but we'll let you know when/if they truly announce that they're back. As for Silent 9, they did share one non-story video that you can watch on Facebook, and it's a 51 seconds-long montage of clips from their sets last night. The vertical camera angle and hacked up nature of the covers isn't ideal, but everyone sounds good in the video, and it is nice seeing The Rockstar Bar open again with a good sized crowd!

Everything looks about normal from how the venue looked pre-pandemic and during their 2021-2022 return, if only for a night. Don't miss Silent 9 at The Esquire Club over Halloween weekend, give their SSR fall social video a watch below, and apologies again to Steve!

More Rotaryfest Stage 1 Videos, Plus Ripcordz Concert Coverage!!

After a Labour Day off, we're back with a new news post on this Tuesday morning, including coverage of a big recent punk show before and after the fact, but let's lead off with newly found concert videos from Sault Ste. Marie's annual summer festival!

As it turns out, we're not quite done with live concert videos from Rotaryfest in July! These come from the YouTube channel Camera Travel (a.k.a. tours5571), which is devoted to video footage of local tourism and road travel in Sault Ontario and surrounding areas, so you may want to give it a look on that basis. They did attend Rotaryfest across Friday and Saturday, July 14th-15th, and had cameras rolling at Clergue Park for thirteen videos, nine of which coming from the Buskerville performances there, especially of fire breathers. Camera Travel filmed two bands on Stage 1, interestingly on different days, including Winnipeg-based Bon Jovi tribute band Bed Of Roses on the Saturday playing (as embedded below) "Livin' On A Prayer" as well as the very tail end of their set, song unclear. These are short and relatively distant from the stage, but from what we hear of Bed Of Roses, they have the Bon Jovi sound down well!

Worth noting too that Bed Of Roses' set happened at dusk, so things were getting darker as their set wore on, and it is a neat visual compared to most other bands that played this year, especially ones who got filmed for public videos. Check out Bed Of Roses' videos from July 15th above and below!

Next up, Camera Travel's other Rotaryfest Stage 1 videos come from Friday, July 14th, specifically of classic rock quartet RPM's set, where they filmed guitarists Dino Mazzuca & Marcel Rizzo, bassist Rob Gilmar, and drummer Joseph Bertrand covering Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" and, as embedded below, AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long". Good to see RPM tackle a heavier song, and while still distant from the stage, the audio quality isn't bad, and Camera Travel filmed longer videos of RPM than they did of Bed & Roses. Check everything out for yourselves above and below!

Finally, I hope to have videos to cover from the show in an upcoming post, but let's look at some recent SooToday coverage of Friday night's Ripcordz-headlined concert at The Loft! Apologies for being so late to the party on the first of them, but Alex Flood penned this article on August 13th looking at the show ahead, where he erroneously noted that this was The Ripcordz' first local date since 2016 (they played at The Rockstar Bar in 2017 & 2019). The article features interview remarks from frontman Paul Gott about the fancier and relatively unique venue for this local date, his enjoyment of playing dates in the Soo, and his passion for punk rock. Solid article for Ripcordz fans, so give it a look at above! For what it's worth, while he didn't note the post-2016 dates of their shows in the article, Alex said there that The Rockstar Bar is "now closed", which sadly remains accurate for The Algonquin Hotel's upstairs nightclub as of this writing.

The Rockstar Bar has been closed since mid-2022, but as per a comment reply at this link, there were once hopes to re-open in the spring of 2023. I know that the pandemic hit them hard, but hopefully we haven't absolutely heard the last from The Rockstar Bar, which was a quality venue throughout the 2010s! In terms of actual coverage from that night, veteran SooToday journalist Donna Hopper was in attendance on Friday for this article, and it's great seeing her back reviewing a local concert of this kind! The upscale venue upstairs at the Algoma Conservatory of Music was heavily the theme of Donna's review compared to past Ripcordz venues here, including a note that there was less moshing than normal, perhaps in deference to the locale. Things appeared to go over well regardless, though no word on if promoter Matt Waples' $500 raffle if online tickets sold out went through.

Donna did take photos at the show, including five of The Ripcordz, three each of local openers A Dire Setback and Far From Fine, and one of fans, and the quality is as high as you'll recall from her pre-pandemic concert reviews! Worth noting from Far From Fine's pictures that Blair St. John was back behind the drumkit (no word on if he is their permanent drummer now or still just filling in), while an unidentified child (possibly Mike's son?) is seen guesting on vocals on at least one song, 19+ age limit for the show acknowledged. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Alien To The Ignorant & Handsome Sandwich), Weekend Concert Previews, And More!!

After a recently rare day off for the SMS, we're back with this weekend's hard rock concert previews, including SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, so here's what you should know! (Yes, I am aware of the Rotaryfest lineup announcements in progress, stay tuned for more when Saturday's lineup and/or Stage 2 are revealed!)

Saskatchewan post-hardcore trio Alien To The Ignorant will return to Sault Ste. Marie for a headlining concert TOMORROW NIGHT at The Rockstar Bar! Apologies for the short notice, this concert was only just announced via its official Facebook event page on Wednesday, and this is legitimately a late notice booking too. As you may recall, Alien To The Ignorant debuted here at local party metal duo The Apocalypse Afterparty's private venue Mellow D's Underground in October, and clearly good connections were made, as The A.A. have been working to get them a local date on their way back out west. There was apparently a venue change before The Rockstar Bar was locked in, but kudos to them for helping out, especially for a recently rare Friday night concert there! If you didn't request the new locale of Mellow D's last fall, you'll have missed Alien To The Ignorant's lively modern hardcore sound, so good thing they're back TOMORROW!

Like last fall, the aforementioned Apocalypse Afterparty will open in their first announced public concert of 2022, so look for more upbeat rap-influenced hard rock originals and covers from the Stanghettas! TOMORROW'S concert is a 19+ affair with doors opening at 7:00 PM, and despite the touring headliners, there is NO COVER CHARGE. If you can make it out TOMORROW, a diverse night of heavy music lies waiting, so visit the above links for more details, and here's Alien To The Ignorant live!

Next up, local alternative hard rock quartet Handsome Sandwich (or members thereof) will make their Shooters Downstairs Lounge debut TOMORROW NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, this show was quietly announced on Wednesday the 15th on the band's Facebook page, but I didn't hear anything about it until this past weekend. While arguably better known from multi-band events, Handsome Sandwich have played solo headlining gigs on the weekend cover circuit before, and TOMORROW'S show at the Dennis Street nightclub fits in with that! The official poster notes that "members of Handsome Sandwich" are playing, with the name "Ourselves" given at the top, and that they'll be playing "radio hits", but the band proper have been plugging the show like normal on Facebook with no caveats, the full lineup is pictured in the poster, and they were an all-covers band before their pandemic hiatus anyway.

If the poster's very specific verbiage is accurate, does this mean that they're playing short-handed and/or with a guest fill-in, hence the Ourselves name and advertised covers focus? You can find out for sure TOMORROW at Shooters! A one nighter due to or resulting in classic rock cover quartet L!me's show there on Saturday, Handsome Sandwich (or "Ourselves") are on TOMORROW at 8:00 PM, expect a 19+ age limit, and there's no announced cover charge. Lastly for currently known & announced hard rock concerts in the Soo this weekend, let's head to Reggie's Place on Queen Street East, where local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard will return to the stage for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! The last of the second-quarter-of-2022 dates that the band announced back in April via this schedule, these will be Bone Yard's first gigs since their outdoor sets at the Queen Street Cruise last week, and for what it's worth, the band revealed on their Facebook page this past Friday that local country duo Jeff & Jeff (featuring Jeff McNiece) opened for them both days, an aspect never announced by event organizers. Apologies for missing that, hopefully the Jeffs set the tone well! Bone Yard last played at the downtown Reggie's over a month ago, and their hard rocking brand of southern fried covers should go over well once again this weekend with fans & regulars alike!

While we're on the subject, Bone Yard's next show after this weekend will take place on Saturday, July 2nd, when they return to the aforementioned Shooters Downstairs Lounge! That show was newly  announced via the venue's Facebook event page yesterday, and will be their first show there since June 10th. Yes, it is a one nighter, as Shooters' Canada Day event on Friday the 1st is separately booked and I hope to cover that on the site shortly! Both this weekend's Reggie's shows and next Saturday's Shooters gig have 19+ age limits and no cover charges, and while the advertised start time at Reggie's is 9:00 PM, they're on at 8:00 PM at Shooters. The seven+ minute video starts with Bone Yard midway through a cover of Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show's "The Cover of "Rolling Stone" (my mom would have loved that) before playing their last song of that set, Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" with definitely more of a hard rock base as you might expect. Despite the vertical camera angle, the filmer did move around to get closer and more varied angles, so you can easily see where the stage was set up at the Cruise and how fans were enjoying the music. Nice quality too, and Bone Yard were on their game, so check it out for yourself below before you see them at Reggie's this weekend!

Belated News Coverage & Interviews About This Year's Clusterfolk Music Festival!!

Today, I wanted to give a much belated look at some of the coverage for April's revived Clusterfolk Music Festival, which had hard rock involvement via The Uncanny Valley, though they did withdraw from the proper Clusterfolk concert at The Rockstar Bar on late notice. In case you need a refresher, Clusterfolk in 2022 was primarily an online festival concocted by Jackson Reed, 180 Projects, the NORDIK Institute, and various grant organizations, with Bad Taste Cinema filming high quality music videos of eight young and (mostly) local indie/folk acts, with mixing & engineering done at Unsalted Audio. The eight videos had staggered uploads in April leading up to the concert, with Jupiter Marvelous, Distich, and late replacements Sainte Marie (who didn't get a Clusterfolk video) performing at The Rockstar Bar to cap off the festival on April 23rd, and reactions seemed to be positive!

In advance of the concert proper, Clusterfolk did get some positive press from regional news media that I apologize for missing until now! CBC Radio One's Northern Ontario culture/lifestyle show Up North did a 10 minute piece on Clusterfolk on April 11th, where producer Bridget Yard talked to Jackson about the genesis of the new Clusterfolk, how things came together (apparently they had wanted to do the festival in 2021 if not for pandemic challenges), aims & aspirations, what the original 2010-2011 Clusterfolk was like, artist feedback, a preview of the Clusterfolk concert proper (albeit before The Uncanny Valley and Bad Actors dropped out), and plans to bring back the festival in 2023 as an in-person summer event, before playing local folk duo Distich's song "Seams" from their festival video. Effective promotion to be sure with some new info, but I am surprised that host Jonathan Pinto didn't ask the questions.

If you didn't catch the feature live on Up North on 89.5 FM, you can hear it on demand at this link, so definitely do so if you want! CTV Northern Ontario's Christian D'Avino spotlighted Clusterfolk in this piece for the former MCTV on April 22nd, featuring interview remarks from both Jackson and Bad Taste Cinema owner Curtis Carriere, and while there's not a lot of new details to glean from it, the regional network television coverage was surely appreciated, so if you missed it on channel 11 (Shaw) or 2 (over the air), click here to see it for yourself! SooToday's Lisa Dobrovnik also covered Clusterfolk for this article on April 5th that approached everything from a future lens, as it beat other outlets to the punch, but it's definitely also worth a read to see how this came together! However, the biggest coverage was via Adrian Vilaca of local internet radio station The Borderline, so what should you know there?

On April 20th, Adrian interviewed Jackson about Clusterfolk for this episode of his main Borderline series The Smart As Trees Podcast, which runs for a solid 53 mintues, so what do we learn here? The interview starts with Jackson discussing his promotional work at the old Cafe Natura and what he's done artistically and abroad since then, before playing Jackson's original song "Go" with his recent solo band The Tweeds about 5:30 in, before getting into Jackson's promotional company Ears & Eyes, and then outlining Clusterfolk and the staff behind it, with Jackson discussing all four of the bands who were supposed to play at The Rockstar Bar, obviously still including The Uncanny Valley, who are brought up first as the intended headliners. Jackson noted that their music video for "Stuck In Rotation" was actually filmed at Unsalted Audio, and you can hear it at 16:10.

Sudbury folk duo The Bad Actors (the other late withdrawals) are brought up next, though Jackson doesn't bring up that their song ("Kelly's Wine") was not a video in the series. That song is played at 22:05, and Jackson does plug Sudbury's Will Powers (who the Bad Actors replaced initially) afterwards, but doesn't get into that lineup change on air. Distich are plugged next with "Seams" played on air 28:10 in, before Jackson plugs something I didn't know until now: All eight Clusterfolk songs were released as a compliation album on Bandcamp on April 19th! The album (put out through Jackson & Will's indie label Care Records) is a totally free download (no "name your price" option), but you can also order it on cassette tapes for $10, and it was sold at the concert! I recall seeing private Facebook pictures of Clusterfolk tape cases, but I never heard anything about a public release, so why wasn't that pumped up more?

Incidentally, a formal album review of this tape wouldn't be imminent, as I typically don't look at compilations with only one or two hard rock/punk songs (this is why I never reviewed the Dunnplugged CDs), but I really should buy a tape for myself! Jackson last discusses mixed-genre local band Jupiter Marvelous, and their song "Stress" is played at 38:55, after Jackson & Jacob Quarrell's joint song "The Moon" at 34:50. The last 10 minutes features Jackson discussing his post-secondary music program experience, the Clusterfolk poster design, the 2011 Clusterfolk (Jackson did get the old organizers' blessing to use the name), hopes to bring live bands back to the Bellevue Park Bandshell, and final hype for the Clusterfolk concert proper, before playing Jackson's solo song "The Sun" on air at 50:30. Very informative interview with lots of push for the concert proper and the overall conceit of the festival!

I do wish they'd have at least mentioned Storm Rausch, Xeno, and Gabrielle Dumas (the other three Clusterfolk video/album acts who were never advertised for the concert), but kudos to Adrian for having Jackson on for this much time to hype Clusterfolk, and here's hoping it comes back bigger & better in 2023! Definitely visit the above links for all of the Clusterfolk coverage, and check out all eight songs on YouTube and/or Bandcamp, and if you have a cassette deck, consider buying a tape for yourselves!
