LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Write-Ups), Mammoth Concert Updates, And More!!

For this Tuesday night post, we're mostly looking at Sault Michigan updates, including a new video interview and updates relating to a big upcoming concert and some more assorted notes, but we'll start in Sault Ontario with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for later this spring!

Ska punk fans will want to circle Friday, May 1st on your calendars, as Flint, Michigan ska-punk band The Write-Ups will make their local concert debut that night at The Speak Easy at Algoma University! Not the first time that we've seen an touring punk band from the USA cross the border for a show here (promoter Mikhal Muto brought a handful of Michigan folk punk bands here last year), but The Write-Ups deliver a suitably bouncy brand of ska punk fuelled with politicially charged and social cause-driven lyrics, and (as you'd hope) a horn section, so they should whet the appetites of subgenre fans! Fittingly, the local openers are newer ska punk trio A.S.D.P. (who Mikhal is the frontman of), and while they don't play live super regularly, expect some fun cuts from their debut EP "Atom Bombs & Lemonade" to kick things off! This is the first concert to cross our radar at The Speak Easy since another touring political punk band (Quit It!) played there in October.

Put on by Mikhal's new agency Underground Events SSM, this will be an all ages concert with doors opening at 7:00 PM, and admission will be $15 at the door or $10 for current Algoma University students with valid student ID (I have not seen any reference to advance tickets being sold online or in person). This should be a fun way to kick off the merry merry month of May, so visit the above links for more details on this concert!

Next up, here's some cool promotion for this Saturday's Mammoth concert at The Dreammakers Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino that I wanted to address without clogging up our next round of weekend concert previews. As some of you may have heard live, Rock 101's Scott Cook interviewed frontman Wolfgang Van Halen on air on his weekday morning drive show Scott Cook In The Morning on March 6th! This is far from a unique occasion, but it's rare when The Sault's Rock Station posts interviews to check out on demand on social media, so kudos to Scott for conducting this and uploading it to Rock 101's Facebook page. The 11+ minute Zoom interview features Scott asking Wolf about how Mammoth's current tour is going, seeing him live out of town with both Mammoth and Van Halen, his family ties (including his uncle in Charlevoix), his uncle Alex Van Halen's current album plans...

...how he handles recording everything on Mammoth albums vs. playing the songs live with a band, their recent Billboard rock chart success, the inspirations of his song lyrics, and what to expect at the concert on Saturday, plus some more casual conversation. Pretty good interview with loose and friendly banter, and Wolfgang came off well here, so this is good hype for the big show in four days' time! Give it a watch below, especially if you missed the live airing of the interview on 101.3 FM!

I did want to note before we move on that promoters Allstar Promotions briefly had a post on Facebook last week indicating that this may be their final major show at The Dreammakers Theatre due to the costs of putting these shows on, coupled with how ticket sales had been going, but when I went back to their Facebook page to source from it, I couldn't find the post. I assume they took it down, but whether they're reassessing what was said (if not just the tone of it), I don't know. Putting on concerts of this scale isn't cheap, and for modern hard rock, Allstar Promotions are by far the biggest facilitator for bringing said bands here, so regardless of if they plan to put on shows beyond Mammoth or not, I do thank Dave & crew for all they have done over the past decade & a half! If you are curious, center section seats for Saturday night's concert are sold out, but there are still left/right section seats available from the sixth-tenth row ($54.50) and in further rows ($44.50) at this link, in person, or at 1-800-KEWADIN. Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

 

• I have regrettably removed the recently disbanded Double Down from our inactive Sault Ontario band links due to the recent deletion of both of their Facebook pages, which were their only online pages. It's never ideal when bands take down their pages after breaking up, as it pulls any official public content and media there offline for everyone, but alas, what can I do? I can only hope that the classic/hard rock cover band's breakup was more amicable than the sudden nature and social media exodus may indicate, and that we see everyone in new bands in due course!
• If you noticed that defunct Sault Michigan hard rock quintet Double Jack (better known as Exit 808) are listed on Kewadin Casino's entertainment page as playing at The Northern Pines Lounge in St. Ignace on April 3rd & 4th, that is assuredly an old booking from before their early 2024 name change, and not even the first time that the St. Ignace Kewadin listed a "Double Jack" booking there after their breakup, as they previously did so in December too. This is good proof that some venues can and do book bands for lengthy periods in advance, but hopefully Kewadin gets an active band to fill in over the Easter long weekend!
• Local hard rock cover band Unfortunate Sun teased in their new cover photo on their Facebook page that they may be dropping "Sun" from their band name, and while most of the comments were jokey, this would be a way to signal a fresh start following singer Skip Parish's departure from the band earlier this month. Unfortunate (Sun?) haven't made a formal statement otherwise, but their lineup listed there now credits Jody, Brett, and Jason as all providing vocals. Time will tell if they're all indeed splitting those duties going forward or not, but we'll keep you posted!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Apocalypse Afterparty), The Kaonashi Concert Preview, And More!!

Before we dive into a stacked slate of Halloween weekend concert previews, here's a new news post for your Wednesday morning, which includes recent battle of the bands results, how to check out a brand new album, and a special mid-week concert preview, but first, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!

Local party metal trio The Apocalypse Afterparty will return to Soo Blaster for yet another gig as the lone rock act on an an otherwise rap/hip-hop event, as they will be opening for Guelph rapper Robbie G once again on Saturday, November 29th! Fans may recall seeing the Stanghettas and Mikhal break out their double bass-and-drums attack when Robbie G headlined at Soo Blaster in April, and previously in 2023, let alone the prior Tech N9ne, Madchild, and Afroman concerts there that The A.A. also opened. Really, this band has never been one to stick to firm genre lines to get exposure, as seen when they headlined the very diverse Riffs For Remembrance memorial concert earlier this month, and these rap shows have done well for them, so hopefully things go well once again next month! At press time, The Apocalypse Afterparty are not credited on the Facebook event page, but the band confirmed their involvement on their Facebook page yesterday.

Former As It Stands frontman Justin "Nadj" Pregent is the credited host for next month's show, which will see opening sets by Southern Ontario touring rappers M For The Movement with Capital "A" Plus and Lumberjack Pat, while fellow local support will include Bold Noize (I wish he'd re-post "God Save Me"), MCs from No Filter Records, and KG Tha SunGod. This will be an all ages concert at 8:00 PM, and tickets are $20 at this link with VIP packages also available if so inclined. Visit the above links for more details!

Next up, here's a special Wednesday night concert preview for TONIGHT, as Philadelphia hardcore quartet Kaonashi (Japanese for "faceless") will topline a stacked night of extreme metal at Jay's Piston Broke Pub! A fast rising progressive metalcore band with djent riffs and some retro touches, they should be more than capable of melting faces in this pre-Halloween concert, so don't bypass Kaonashi despite the work/school night scheduling! Also joining them on this stop of their I Wanna Go To Canada 2025 Tour is Calgary hardcore band Abrupt Decay (they don't spell it "Abrubt"), whose mathcore-inflected brutality will definitely help them stand out tonight, and they may steal the show depending on your preferences! Montreal post-hardcore trio Paresis will also take the stage as their tour converges with Kaonashi's, and their alternative influenced brand of screamo will also attract its own audience!

Local death/thrash metal trio Pillory will be tonight's local openers in their first show since the successful release of "Old Soul" on Saturday (more on that in a second), so they should be riding strong momentum! The local promotional debut for Thunder Bay's Piss Hard Promotions, this 19+ Wednesday metal night at the former Roosevelt Hotel has a $25 cover charge at the door, and a start time of 8:00 PM. Should be a fun and intense night of metal, and I know promoters hope to run more shows here, so pack the place tonight if you can before things get even busier for Halloween! Now, let's talk about Pillory's new album "Old Soul", which was successfully released at their release party at Soo Blaster on Saturday! The album wasn't immediately available that day on major streaming platforms, but it arrived thusly on Sunday at midnight, As linked via Distrokid, the album can be streamed on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Deezer, while it is also now streamable on YouTube Music. If you want to actually buy mp3 copies of "Old Soul", it runs for $9.99 on iTunes. CD copies of the album are available at Pillory concerts and through direct contact with band members, where it will cost you $20 (t-shirts with the album artwork cost $30). Aside from the tags on YouTube crediting former bassist Jordan Leach as a co-writer, I haven't seen any specific performer or production credits for the album, so like with Hails' new album, that all may be exclusive to the CDs.

I missed the release party due to the same cold that kept me from the LSSU Battle of the Bands (more on that in a second), but I hope things went well at Soo Blaster, and I will be eager to review "Old Soul" on the SMS in the new year! For now, give it a listen or buy it above, and here's the first song from the album that wasn't a pre-release advance single, namely "Abhorred Apprehension"!

Let's close this post in Sault Michigan with the final results from the third annual Lake Superior State University Battle of the Bands at their on-campus Arts Center on Thursday, so who won the $150 top prize? In a mild upset, the winners were the debuting acoustic act The Dynamic Duo! Not bad given how new they were, but remember that every competing act on Thursday was either a solo musician or duo, which really opened things up. Personal Facebook videos from The Dynamic Duo's set show them covering The Cranberries' "Zombie" and Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead Or Alive", and Danielle & Ben sounded good there, so kudos to them for impressing the judges! At press time, I do not know who won the $50 second prize, other than that it wasn't Kevin Blakeney, but you can watch his opening set at this link, albeit from a really close upward angle. Solid gritty acoustic folk throughout!

New local rap duo Tunngtyed's set was filmed for YouTube, so give it a watch at this link. I'm not a hip hop scholar, but it is neat seeing strong rappers in the E.U.P.! A personal Facebook video of About:Blank (minus Nathan) playing an acoustic version of their song "Unfazed" is also floating around too, but like with the Dynamic Duo videos, it's not public. I have not found videos (public or private) of Socrates & The Cavemen or Kaleb "NDN Summer" Shannon's sets. The Dynamic Duo's new Facebook page hasn't shared videos of their set, but they did share Danielle's video of them being named the winners, so give it a watch below, and congratulations from Sault Ontario!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Generations, Legends Of Rock, And Curtis McKenzie) Plus Crush Updates!!

A surprise news post on this Saturday night is led off by LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, one on VERY SHORT NOTICE, so here's what you should know!

Southeast Michigan-based 1980s metal/hard rock tribute band Legends Of Rock will make their local concert debut TONIGHT at... the Ronald "Bud" Cooper Gymnasium at the James Norris Center on the campus of Lake Superior State University?! I profusely apologize for the short notice, this show completely skipped my usual channels, as scouting LSSU Lakers hockey games isn't common SMS protocol for me, but it has gotten primary social media promotion on the LSSU Athletics Facebook page. TONIGHT's concert is a post-game party following the Lakers' regular season hockey game at the Taffy Abel Arena (also in the Norris Center) that has commenced as of this writing, but you don't have to be a ticket buyer to go across the hall after the game ends at around 8:00 PM to see the concert. The raison d'etre for Legends Of Rock's show TONIGHT is that the game has a "Rock The Rink" promotional theme.

Attendees of tonight's CCHA conference game against he Bowling Green Falcons (who beat the Lakers yesterday) will get rock music all night during play stoppages, plus there will be an air guitar contest and more themed activities, which is a fun idea! Legends Of Rock pay homage primarily to 1980s hair metal and arena rock, and do a solid job of it with fun energy and lots of talent, so keep TONIGHT's show in mind if you're in the E.U.P. and want to rock out, though the scheduling opposite the Trixter concert at Kewadin Casino is admittedly curious! There's no announced age limit, and the concert (held where LSSU's basketball teams play) is FREE. Visit the above links for more details, and here's Legends Of Rock live!

Next up, let's head north to Sault Ontario for two more new show announcements, starting with local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations' next concert, which will see them rock The Water Tower Pub on Saturday, November 1st! Two weeks removed from their return from the stage after a two month break, this will be their first show at the Great Northern Road nightclub in almost three months. No word on if there will be a late Halloween theme for the occasion as other venues are taking advantage of (Elly McWatters & The Drifters are headlining their Halloween night concert on Friday), but we'll let you know if something is said by the band or venue! With their guitarist slot still vacant, Smokehouse's Michael Yurich will fill in with Generations once again, while drummer Tony Santoro promised "a special surprise" as well that night. This is a 19+ event at 8:00 PM with no cover. See the above links for more on this classic/hard rock attack! 

Also newly announced for next month, former Haggith/Project 421 frontman Curtis McKenzie will take his acoustic solo act to a rare support slot on Friday, November 21st when he opens for local Pink Floyd tribute band Dark Side Of The Soo at Beck's Bar! Itself, this show is a rarity as a Friday nighter, as Beck's usually reserves that day of the week for DJs and dance parties, but they have been slowly booking special Friday night concerts in recent weeks, new local Pearl Jam tribute band Even Flow on Friday (for Halloween) among them. Curt's unplugged hard and alternative rock covers won't be a perfect genre/era match to Pink Floyd, but the talent and familiarity with the former Vibe Lounge is certainly there, so keep his opening set in mind next month! Dark Side Of The Soo (a side project of pop rock cover band Bourbon Blue) debuted locally last summer and have played live sporadically since.

Their own Beck's debut in August was a hit, and hopefully Jules and crew deliver a night of classic prog rock goodness for west end fans in four weeks' time! An 8:00 PM start time is in effect for this concert, which has a 19+ age limit and no cover charge. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details!

We'll close this post with what new Sault Michigan hard rock trio Crush have been up to as of late! Keeping with their comedic lean for social media posts, this short video on August 8th sees bassist Isaac "Iggy" Royer getting into an altercation (of sorts) with a traffic pilon. I'll let you decide who won! On Friday, October 17th, Crush were interviewed live on Scott Cook In The Morning on Rock 101, which I'm surprised never got promoted in advance by the band on their Facebook page! That seems like the sort of thing that you'd want people to tune in for, you know? From what I was told, they performed an acoustic version of their song "Hey You". Hopefully that went well regardless, and it's always nice to see Scott promote local musicians on air! After a couple months of primarily teasing and hyping their concert slate otherwise, their next Facebook post was the day after their Rock 101 interview.

Said video is of Iggy reviewing the men's bathroom at their concert in Battle Creek the previous night, which has to be a first for us, so check above to see how he judged the amenities there! Embedded below is their newest Facebook update (tour concert photos aside), which sees Isaac working the front desk at Rock 101's parent company Sovereign Communications! Well, as far as you know. If you didn't know they were on the radio last week, you'd have lost a lot of context, but hopefully we hear more from Crush in musical and non-musical areas soon! SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The 2025 Lake Superior State University Battle Of The Bands!!)

Six local acts will face off in the third annual Lake Superior State University Battle of the Bands on THURSDAY at the on-campus Arts Center! Apologies for the short notice, the final lineup was only revealed on the Arts Center's Facebook page this past Wednesday, though details on some of the acts were not immediately available, with posts introducing them being staggered over the past week. The second major battle in the E.U.P. this year (following the Superior Whitefish Festival one in Brimley in July), this year's LSSU Battle will feature six acts (down one from 2024) vying for battle supremacy, and we have a guaranteed first-time winner ahead, as The Sole Aggressors broke up this summer and Molly Escherich is attending the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Two performers are returning solo musicians from last year, including veteran folk singer/guitarist Kevin Blakeney, which makes him the only act to play at all three LSSU battles.

Joining him again is Kaleb Shannon, who now performs under the solo handle NDN Summer, but don't bypass either as a contender on THURSDAY, as Kaleb did win the $750 second prize at the Superior Whitefish Festival Battle (which Kevin also competed in). Will they appeal to the judges at the Arts Center this time around? Of the four bands competing on THURSDAY, the most familiar to SMS readers will be hard rock/punk band About:Blank (who performed at the Superior Whitefish Festival's Music In The Park concert, but not the battle). This will be a special two-man acoustic set, as guitarist Nathan Webber (one of Molly's victorious Other Guys from last year) will be absent himself, so frontman Parker Talentino (a solo competitor from the 2024 LSSU Battle) and drummer Kade DesArmo will press onward. Will Kade's presence push Parker into the winning position? Find out on THURSDAY!

The other three acts are brand new to me, including Socrates & The Cavemen, a new band from LSSU philosophy/humanities professor Jason Swedene, who played bass for last year's competing indie rock quartet The Undecideds alongside his son Calvin (formerly of the Sole Aggressors). In this new project, Jason is "The Cavemen" while Socrates is his other son William, but the descriptions don't outright say what they'll play beyond teasing a soul/funk influence. We'll find out on THURSDAY! New local rap duo Tunngtyed (featuring MCs Tha Baztad and G-Blunt) and new local acoustic project The Dynamic Duo (featuring singer Danielle Petingalo and guitarist Ben Huyck) round out the battle roster, which means that this year's battle has no bands with more than two advertised members, whereas there were four with 3+ members in each of the last two years. To me, this leaves the field wide open, so it's anyone's guess who will win!

And no, Tarnished/Crush frontman Alex Traynor (with or without his poofy white coat) is not playing on THURSDAY despite being on the promotional poster. If things are formatted identically to last year, the 2025 LSSU Battle will be judged by LSSU faculty and a student representative, who all are scoring on one individual criteria apiece, and acts will likely be blocked for 15 minutes apiece, giving room for 3-4 songs each. Prizes for the battles so far were $150 for first place and $50 for second place (both as gift cards), with third place and beyond not announced. Admission on THURSDAY will be $10 for general audiences and $5 for kids 10 and under, while current LSSU students, faculty, and staff will get in for free. A 7:30 PM start time is advertised, and it should be an early night once again given the formatting. While I wish the lineup was announced with a little more notice, there should be a great batch of music in store for attendees!

I'm unsure if I'll be going to this year's battle, but I went last year (here's my review), and the talent base and support for the performers was very encouraging! This year hasn't been the easiest in terms of cross-border relationships with the tariffs and whatnot, but it'd be great to see some Sault Ontarians come across to check out the Yoopers competing on THURSDAY, and best wishes to everyone as they vie for first place! LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Quit It!), Upcoming Album Teasers, And New Videos!!

 Here's a new news post for this Sunday morning, which includes some varied new videos, upcoming album details on both sides of the border, and leading off, a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT that completely slipped me by until now, so here's what you should know!

Calgary "socio-political anthemic punk" band Quit It! will make their local concert debut TONIGHT at The Speak Easy at Algoma University! I profusely apologize for the short notice, I only heard about this show this morning via this SooToday article which went live on October 9th, though the Facebook event page went live late last month. I'm assuming this fell through the cracks because the SooToday article was "sponsored content", let alone that TONIGHT's show appears to have no local openers (the poster saying "bands" acknowledged), but remember that The Speak Easy only infrequently hosts SMS-amenable bands, with this being the first such punk/hard rock event since Mean Bikini played there in 2023. Touring in support of their new album "Through The Debris", Quit It! have an explosive and politically charged sound that left-leaning punk fans will appreciate, and their DIY approach and clear talents and energy will definitely lend themselves well to drawing a good response from fans at Algoma University TONIGHT!

If there is an opening band, they are uncredited in public press. A 7:00 PM start time is in effect for TONIGHT'S concert, which has admission at the door of $15 for general audiences and $10 for Algoma students with valid student ID. As best as I can tell, this is an all ages event. Being on a work/school night for most may not be ideal, but Quit It! are worth checking out for sure, and if this goes well, it might not be two years before The Speak Easy brings another touring punk band here! Next up, here's the latest from local metal trio The BAG, who had been radio silent for the past three months, so what have they been up to? Well, on Thursday, they revealed on their new Facebook page that they have finished mixing and mastering their debut album! To my recollection, they hadn't even announced that they were entering the studio (despite having multiple originals in their live sets), so this is a welcome surprise! I was worried that Spencer joining the Sault Side Squad was a bad omen for The BAG's future, but no cause for alarm there! The album will be named "Sacculus", which is a sensory cell in the inner ear and some some insects' antenna, and the painted cover artwork by Elly Grawbarger depicts a battle between a cthulhu and a lava monster (possibly a cherufe?) near a volcano, with the band rocking out at the foot of it. Further details on the track listing, release formats, and more lie ahead, but check out more updates from The BAG above!

Also, let's start playing catch up on what new Sault Michigan hard rock trio Crush have been up to beyond what we have covered of theirs on the site already! Since launching, this band has picked up both the original music responsibilities and the jokey/parody social media promotion angle that Alex, Josh, and Isaac's other/old band Tarnished have largely shelved since they shifted to a covers-only focus last summer, and that is very clear if you follow Crush's Facebook page. On August 6th, they shared this video of the guys going to Dunham's Sports at the Cascade Crossings strip mall, where guitarist Josh Fair bought his first gun, followed by the guys taking it to a field to do some practice shooting. The visual content here isn't really SMS-relevant beyond who's starring, but there is humour to be had! And remember, this is Michigan, everything with the rifle was done legally and safely. However, the music will be of note regardless!

Added in post are demos of Crush's original songs "No Way", "Intoxicated", and "Too Close", and the end-of-video caption notes that they have an "album coming soon". I had my suspicions watching this video that they were in studio in some form, so it's nice to get some public clarification, and it will be interesting to hear how things are coming along! Finally, here's a new video from Sault Ontario classic rock cover duo Frankly Speaking's concert at Beck's Bar on Wednesday! This special mid-week show was one of their "Rock On To The Sound Of Change" events that generally isn't billed to the Frankly Speaking name (rather "Frank & Frank" or "Frankeeproductions"), and in this format, they pay homage to rock classics in a historical context and how those songs/bands inspired social change. Generally, the Franks don't lean heavier as far as the SMS goes but they certainly have hard rock covers in their back pocket that we have featured here in prior posts. This video was shared to 705Live Sound Co.'s Facebook page from singer/guitarist Frank Gioia's personal Facebook page, and it features him and keyboardist Frank Greco covering the opening ballad verses of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", with a silent video of Queen playing behind them.

What we get here looks and sounds good, even with the hyper-narrow widescreen orientation, and it is interesting seeing a themed special concert set like this from a local band that gets treated as a bigger deal! Some readers may recall "Rock On To The Sound Of Change" being performed at Rotaryfest Stage 1 last year, albeit without a video screen. Give Frankly Speaking's partial Queen cover a watch below!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Sylo & Tarnished), Mid-Week Concert Previews, And More!!

Before we begin this post, we have a cancellation to take note of, as the planned Krang-headlined concert at The Distraction on September 8th is no longer taking place. Promoter Mikhal Muto said on his personal Facebook page that it was "due to the current situation with The Distraction", likely referring to the East Street venue's fire safety compliance needs following the Ripcordz concert cancellation last month. With almost three weeks to go, it's a wonder why they're not looking for a new host venue, but this is still disappointing, and hopefully Krang get a chance to play here again, let alone that The Distraction re-opens with all approved safety measures soon!

Now, today's post features an unusually robust lineup of mid-week concert previews, including two SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, plus some assorted updates, but let's lead off with one of the two brand new shows, as Sault Michigan hard rock/classic metal cover quartet Tarnished will play a special outdoor concert TOMORRROW NIGHT at Lake Superior State University outside of Brady Hall! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced the show on their Facebook page earlier today, even calling this a "surprise show" there. Tarnished did not specify why they're playing a random outdoor show at LSSU outside of one of their residence halls, let alone TOMORROW, but this is orientation/move-in week for students enrolled in the fall semester at Lake State, so this must be a fun pop-up concert for the new and returning students to check out to escape from the usual preparations and unpacking!

Despite the university campus trappings, Tarnished are on TOMORROW at 8:00 PM with no cover charge, and while there's no stated age limit or restrictions for students/non-students, mind the locale if you want to check things out. 9&10 News is calling for partly cloudy skies TOMORROW with no chance of rain, and temperatures ranging from 64-66° (18-19° Celsius), so conditions should be really good for some live hard rock covers. Next up, Sault Ontario hard rock quartet Sylo will headline a special mid-week concert at Beck's Bar TOMORROW  NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, this show was first announced on Sylo's Instagram page on Saturday.  With very rare exceptions so far (like the Motorhead tribute M1), Beck's has only hosted full electric bands on Saturdays since re-opening, so it'll be interesting to see how an originals-infused local band does TOMORROW there, especially given the atypical scheduling for a local headliner! On their Facebook page, Beck's called this "a special treat" and referenced that "we love welcoming up and coming new bands to the scene" (even though Sylo debuted in 2021). An unsaid motivation for this concert may be frontman Elijah Russell's university commitments out of town, which caused the band to take a hiatus from August 2024-May 2025. If Eli is heading back to school, TOMORROW may be the last Sylo show for a while.

Whether Sylo are going on hiatus again or not, they are a talented young group, and hopefully their Beck's debut TOMORROW goes off without a hitch despite the unusual scheduling! Also today, here's one more mid-week concert preview, but it's one we knew about already, as local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard 225 will headline the annual Cruisin’ The Dub motorcycle show at the older A&W at 121 Great Northern Road on THURSDAY NIGHT! Weather permitting, the last few years have seen joint classic car and motorcycle shows to support Multiple Sclerosis Canada at both of the A&Ws on Great Northern Road (the newer one down the highway hosts a car show), and given Bone Yard's affinity for motorcycles, it's a no-brainer that they'd support a great cause like this at the bike show half! August 21st is Burgers To Beat MS Day too, so buying a burger will help out even if you don't come out for the concert and bike show, which includes games, raffles, popcorn, and more. There will reportedly be live music at the newer A&W for the car show but I'm unsure which band. We'll let you know if something is publically said.

For more charitable motorcycle concert action, Bone Yard 225 will also rock the annual Dragonfly Run on Sunday, and our preview of that hits the SMS this weekend. While the bike (and car) show starts at 5:00 PM, your local 225 don't take the outdoor stage until 6:00 PM on Thursday. This is absolutely an all ages concert with no cover charge, but donations to MS Canada will absolutely be encouraged. 9&10 News is currently calling for similar conditions on Thursday evening, with partly cloudy skies, no chance of rain, and a weather in the 22° range. • SooToday's Greg McGrath-Goudie reviewed B.A. Johnston's concert at Venue in May for this article, going into solid detail about the eclectic happenings at the Hamilton outsider punk musician's latest local stop and what goes on at his shows in general. Two pictures were included, even of him performing on top of a car outside of the Queen Street East events space, and Greg did get some interview remarks with B.A. post-show as well. Entertaining read that does as good of a job at outlining his hard-to-describe live shows as you can, so check out the full article above!
• Newer local death metal band Bardo, progressive metal quartet Convergence, and online page-less metal supergroup The Sault Side Squad will join the previously confirmed Maynard Hayes as the local openers for the Napoleon-headlined concert from Heavy North Entertainment at Soo Blaster on Friday, September 26th, as per a quiet update to the Facebook event page. Notably, this will mark Convergence's first time opening for a touring band, while this will be Bardo's first concert in almost a year, after debuting when they opened for Selias at the same venue this past September. Looks like a solid lineup to me, so visit the above links for more details!
• I have moved local punk quintet The Gambit to our inactive band links. The former Sick Sons have not issued a public update since their Rotaryfest Stage 2 set in July of last year, but note that they have always been sporadic for their social media updates and live gigs, having played just once a year since their name change and late 2022 revival. The Gambit were working on original material and had teased future plans, so hopefully we do see Lucas, Steve, Christian, Dave, and Clint back when the time is right, especially with that stacked lineup of local punk veterans!

Information On Saturday's Superior Whitefish Festival Concerts, Plus A New Battle Of The Bands!!

For this SMS post, we're heading over to Sault Michigan and the E.U.P. for some belated coverage of an event that I should have talked about on here last week, and one that I definitely didn't miss along the same lines, so here's what you should know on this Tuesday evening!

I wanted to start this post by profusely apologizing for missed concerts for coverage on the site, as there was a Music In The Park event and a battle of the bands during the returning Superior Whitefish Festival in Brimley on Saturday! To an extent, I think this falling off our radar so hard is due to two variables: I didn't expect it at all given that this festival hasn't been held in over a decade, but also, the known heavier bands to have played it didn't advertise it in advance on social media, alas. Two distinct concerts were at Riverview Park at 12099 West Lakeshore Drive on Saturday, and local punk/hard rock trio About:Blank (who haven't posted on their Facebook page since early June) played at 2:00 PM there, while fast-rising young Dafter singer/guitarist Molly Escherich (who recently participated in the Interlochen Center for the Arts' Popular Music Performance Camp) bookended that program at 1:00 PM & 5:00 PM.

Two acts named Acoustic Beaches and Whistle & Fish performed at 4:00 & 3:00 PM respectively, and while I don't know a thing about the latter (bands of that name on Facebook are from out of state), Acoustic Beaches is a new unplugged cover duo from Exit 808 bandmates (and mother & son) Amy Beach and Blaze Beairl, with guest spots by Amy's nieces. Exit 808 fans may recall Amy playing acoustic gigs with varying performers on occasion, and hopefully they had a good set in Brimley! After Molly's last solo set, the battle of the bands commenced, with cash prizes of $1,000, $750, $500, and $250 awaiting the top four acts! Your performers in the battle were veteran local folk singer/guitarist Kevin Blakeney at 7:00 PM, pop rock solo artist Kaleb Shannon at 7:30 PM, hard rock quartet The Nameless (who didn't publicize their involvement in the battle on their Facebook page until after it was done) at 8:00 PM, ...

...a mystery band named Crush at 8:30 PM, and the revival of Molly Escherich's live band Molly & The Other Guys at 9:00 PM. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find complete results of who won beyond that Kevin finished in fourth place, and that The Nameless weren't in last place, but they had surprisingly strong cash prizes, so hopefully everyone performed well! It's worth noting that Molly & The Other Guys' lineup featured Molly alongside About:Blank guitarist Nathan Webber once again (much like we saw at the LSSU Battle of the Bands that they won last fall), but the rhythm section this time was young local bassist Destini Smith (who guested with Tarnished during the same battle last year) and Molly's brother Cayd on drums (replacing About:Blank's Kade DesArmo, ironically given the first names). Once again, I profusely apologize for missing the Superior Whitefish Festival's concerts for coverage on here! It's been a busy month.

It can be so easy for E.U.P. content to slip us by, but I hope a great time was had by all! If all goes well, I'm not done with it anyway, as I do want to find out more about Crush and Whistle & Fish (especially if the former placed in the top three in the battle), let alone who won what in the top three. I did find a video from the Whitefish Festival on a personal account of six young girls covering a Chappell Roan song on Saturday, but if they were Crush, they'd have to have been moved to first in the battle order given when it was uploaded. Stay tuned for more details when/if they roll in!

To close this post, why not discuss a battle of the bands that I haven't missed for coverage on the SMS, namely the third annual Lake Superior State University community battle of the bands, which takes place on Thursday, October 23rd at the Sault Ste. Marie university's on-campus Arts Center once again! First announced via the Arts Center's Facebook page on June 4th (notably with Molly performing in the graphic after winning last year) when publicizing their event schedule for the fall season, this post on Molly's Facebook page features hype for the battle from LSSU's own events calendar, including claims that it will be "bigger, louder, and more thrilling than ever". Admission will be $10 for general attendees, $5 for kids 10 and under, and free for current university students and faculty. We don't yet know how the format will be the same/different from last year, but in 2024, it was judged by professors and a student representative, and bands had 15 minute sets to play three or four songs apiece, with a $150 gift card awaiting the winners.

The runners up won a $50 gift card, and while eight acts (including solo musicians) were advertised, one dropped out prior to showtime. Trade war/tariffs pending, I'd love to come back for this battle again, as I had fun checking out the array of E.U.P. talent last fall, but I wonder why they're still holding this on a Thursday? No word yet on who we might see (audition info is forthcoming), let alone if Molly & crew will attempt to defend their title, but we'll let you know when more comes out on this battle! The 2024 Lake Superior State University Battle Of The Bands Review!!

Here's a rarity for the SMS that I hope won't be so rare in the future: A review of a concert in Sault Michigan! On Thursday, Lake Superior State University hosted their second annual community battle of the bands at the on-campus Arts Center, and after missing last year's (I was seriously planning on hopping the border for it before getting a cold), I saw a golden opportunity to bear witness to my first local battle since the pandemic began! Just nice to see one take place in the E.U.P., there haven't been many compared to Sault Ontario. For readers unfamiliar, the Arts Center is LSSU's theater/auditorium at the far left of campus, roughly opposite their bookstore, and it remains as nicely laid out and professional as it was when I was a student there over a decade ago! Tickets were at a proper booth with concessions, and while the start was delayed a bit, there was a decent turnout in the auditorium for the battle on Thursday night!

By no means was it sold out, but I'd estimate 100-200 people were in attendance, and they were very vocal and loud for all acts! The MC of the battle was Arts Center director and LSSU assistant theater professor Noah Luce, while the four judges included two deans at the university (Mindy McCready and Steven Johnson), Arts Center business manager Melissa St. John, and Jillian Roush, who I believe was a current student representative. In terms of the judging criteria, this battle was handled very differently than others I've seen, as each judge individually handled one metric rather than judging each band on all points. One judge scored solely on originality, stage presence, and preparation each, while Jillian handled the audience vote. To that end, Noah encouraged attendees to cheer as loud as they could for each act after their sets for judging purposes. Acts competing on Thursday had a 15 minute set like last year, meaning that they got to play three or four songs each

Unfortunately, there was a late band withdrawal, as Traverse City hard rock band Sonic Dayze did not perform on Thursday for unannounced reasons. Hopefully nothing too serious happened, it would have been neat to see them in action! The stage setup for the bands was quite cavernous with lots of room to roam if need be, while the three solo musicians performed with a curtain behind them, and regardless, a projection screen displayed the band's name or logo above or behind them. The first act on Thursday was new local rock band Small Town Society, who united vocalist Holly Sibbald, ex-Double Jack guitarist Melvin Willis, (stand-up!) bassist Chris Bennett, drummer Daniel Jackson, and in a surprise not indicated in advance, veteran local guitarist "Blind" Bob Quinn Musically, the Small Town Society covered three songs, including Radiohead's "Creep" and Hozier's "Too Sweet".

Nothing too heavy, but they were a talented band with some solid professionalism for night #1 together, and Holly sure traveled the stage on most of their set! It was neat seeing Chris break out a big stand-up bass too (shades of The Rising Tide there), and they seemed to get a solid response, but it'll be interesting to see where things go for a longer show! Second was the night's first solo act, namely Kaleb Shannon, a local pop rock singer/guitarist who played four songs, including "Acceptance" and three that he mostly described the origins of, but didn't directly name. Kaleb had a natural ease about him and a good rapport with the audience that masked some of the hiccups between his songs! He has a good voice and writes some direct and honest, but upbeat, lyrics, and he has a bright future! Third up on Thursday was solo performer #2, namely veteran local folk singer/guitarist Kevin Blakeney, who returned from last year's battle for a four song set of his own.

Kevin played songs named "Thank God For The TV", an instrumental that I think he called "Angry Man", and a short song he wrote for his granddaughter named "Butterfly". Kevin's matter-of-fact folk rock was well performed and had a strong grit to it, with his vocals reminding me of a cross between Tom Waits and Mark Knopfler (which is certainly not a bad thing). It's tough to assess solo musicians against bands at a judged battle setting, but he left a distinct impression! Local metal/hard rock band Tarnished were next, though not as fans have seen them live this fall. Rather than have Chris Leask & Ron Suchey back as the rhythm section, Alex & Josh called in Destini Smith & Molly Escherich (more on her in a bit) to fill in for the night. Kudos for supporting young local talent! Tarnished and crew played a three song set, including covers of Cameo's "Word Up" (yes) and Judas Priest's "Living After Midnight"

Notably, frontman Alex Traynor did not play guitar at all, instead singing in his finest fuzzy white coat. Gotta be honest, I wanted to see him shredding along with Josh Fair (exclusively called Josh Tyler here) on Thursday, but his vocals suited the songs well with good energy! Destini's bass wasn't working on their opening song, but she and Molly acquitted themselves well, and Tarnished got fans going well with good audience involvement and some solid rock throughout! After a brief intermission, the battle resumed with the band advertised as Unsure, but it seems that they were unsure about that moniker, and instead performed as "The Undecideds". So, who are they? Well, if you were wondering why 2023 battle winners The Sole Aggressors didn't come back, this band may explain why! As far as I'm aware, Sole Aggressors frontman Calvin Swedene and drummer Isaac Brindley were in The Undecideds.

They were joined by a keyboardist named Frank, as well as Calvin's dad (I think) Jason Swedene on bass. Jason happens to be an arts, letters, and social sciences professor at LSSU, for the record. Unlike the Sole Aggressors, The Undecideds played a reserved indie/alternative sound, but were the only band on Thursday to play an all-original set, with their four songs including ones named "In Heaven" and (I think) "Strawberry Pond", with Frank singing lead on their closer. I do prefer what I've heard of the Sole Aggressors, but the songs here had merit for indie rock fans! I would heavily encourage the guys to work on their stage presences though, as they were very stiff, and their set ended very abruptly without a thank you to the fans. Promising musicians in this group though, and the crowd response was good! The penultimate performer on Thursday was former Tarnished bassist Parker Talentino.

He played three originals (including "Already Been Said" & "Barter") as well as a cover of Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)". Despite a brief technical glitch at the start when there was no microphone for him to use (Noah lent his for the set), Parker performed well with his own brand of alternative rock originals, showing off a good melodic singing voice and a relatability with his lyrics! Definitely a far cry from what he played with Tarnished at this event last year (the 2023 battle was his debut with them), but a strong effort and it came off naturally! Last but not least were Molly & The Other Guys, a one-off(?) live band to support last year's runner-up artist, Dafter singer/guitarist Molly Escherich. She was joined here by former Tarnished guitarist Nathan Webber, founding/current Tarnished frontman Alex Traynor on bass, and Exit 808 drummer Jackie Moon.

I'm not one to make a big deal about musician ages, but Molly is twelve years old, and even if you put aside the ample cheering section that came out to support her and The Other Guys (they even brought signs and t-shirts!), her talents were on full display both here and when she drummed with Tarnished! The crew covered Hole's "Celebrity Skin" and Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life" during their three song set, and while the intro to the latter song felt kind of off, everyone performed well, and it was nice to see Nathan shredding with good enthusiasm on stage again! Molly got a strong backing band here, and while her voice did get a bit strained late, she has a very bright future, and again, she's twelve! While judges deliberated and tallied the scores, Noah promoted upcoming Arts Center events, and the prizes were unchanged from last year ($150 for first place, $50 for second, both as gift cards).

The winners of the 2024 Lake Superior State University Battle of the Bands are... Molly & The Other Guys, and given the rock attack and fan response, I'm not too shocked by that! It's a solid jump for Molly after finishing second as a mostly solo act last year (fan-only voting acknowledged), and hopefully she rides this momentum well as she develops as a musician! Tarnished claimed second place after missing the podium outright last year, so kudos to Alex and Molly for sweeping both prizes! Like last year, third place was not announced. Everything ended around 10:00 PM, so it was a nice early evening for this all-ages event, and things seemed to go well for all involved! As a relative outsider to Sault Michigan concerts (I really must continue fixing that), there was a lot of strong talent on display from the bands, Kaleb, Kevin, and Parker, and I do hope that the university brings this back next fall!

Given the short sets, that was the easiest way to ensure everyone was filmed, so apologies to Tarnished for filming the one song where Destini's bass wasn't working! Its a smaller area, but there's a lot of talented artists who would benefit from getting hits and fans in Canada, let alone attendance at their shows if you've able to cross the border!
