This weekend is shaping up to be one of the biggest concert weekends in terms of concert volume that I've seen in quite a while! I know of no less than ELEVEN concerts taking place between tonight and Monday, and this includes three new concerts that I can now confirm, so in other words, we're starting this very long post with LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!! Then stay tuned for a pile of weekend concert previews, but now, here's what's new this weekend!
On Tuesday, I told you guys about the news that Charlevoix classic metal trio Peril would be playing a concert TONIGHT in Sault Michigan, presumably as part of this year's I-500 Pub Crawl. I didn't confirm it as a concert at the time because a venue wasn't confirmed for the show, but now we know where they're going! As it turns out, they will be back at The Savoy Bar & Nightclub on West Portage Avenue, and yes, it's an I-500 Pub Crawl venue! Part of me thought it'd be at The Rapids Lounge again, but they're not a listed venue for the Pub Crawl, which I'll have more information on in a second. You must be 21 to enter The Savoy tonight for this short notice concert from Peril, there is no cover charge as you normally see it, and I reckon they'll be on at 10:00 PM tonight. For more details, visit their official Facebook page! Sounds like a fun night of metal from Peril, they're a talented band with great covers and originals, no matter where they play! Check the above links for more, I'll have more on the I-500 Pub Crawl after our next new concerts, and for a preview, here's Peril covering Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" from last year!
Before we move onto more from the Pub Crawl, we have new concerts from a local hard rock trio that are FINALLY posting concert schedules again! Since their 2009 name changes, local hard rock trio Monkey's Uncle haven't posted concert schedules on their MySpace page, so I only tended to hear about their concerts from Kewadin Casino's entertainment page, Dondee Lanes' Facebook page, and the occasional Dondee radio ad. Well rejoice, Monkey's Uncle fans, as the band have posted a number of upcoming concert dates on MySpace finally, so now we know about their upcoming shows in advance! Eight local dates are listed, including the previously confirmed May 6th-7th weekend at The Rapids Lounge, and curiously enough, the March 4th-5th and July 15th-16th weekends that Kewadin Casino had previously deleted from their entertainment page. If the dates weren't altered, why were they deleted? I dunno, but if the band says they're on, I'll believe them until proven otherwise! But these are LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS because Monkey's Uncle are at The Dondee THIS WEEKEND for shows on Friday and Saturday! They both have 8:00 PM start times, there's no announced cover charge, and you must be 21 to enter!
Great to see that Monkey's Uncle are still alive and well, and they should put on a great show this weekend with their hard rocking sound! Apologies for the short notice though, I just found about these Dondee shows this morning. Check out all of the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's their cover of Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer" from a December 2007 show! Remember, THIS WEEKEND AT THE DONDEE!!
Now back to the I-500 Pub Crawl. In case you're unaware, this is a yearly event (since 2008) where numerous local bars and establishments host special events on the Thursday before the annual I-500 snowmobile race, with drink specials and concerts or whatever all else. If you buy a $10 t-shirt in advance of the Pub Crawl at a participating bar/place, and have it signed, you will get drink specials at all participating venues! Sounds like fun, we should have something like this here (Algoma Hope4Haiti is the closest I can think of that we've seen lately.) Participating venues include former metal concert venues and other local bars alike, including Antler's Restaurant, The Bird, The Bomb Shelter Saloon, The Captain's Pub & Grille, The Corner Pub Bar & Grill, The Downtowner, The Gin Mill, the I-500 Beer Tent itself, The Merchant's Bar, The Palace Saloon, The Satisfied Frog, The Savoy Bar & Nightclub, and Zim's! Most of these are on West and East Portage Avenue, so head on out tonight to have some discount alcohol and have a good time! For more details on this year's "Pub500", click here! Now some of these spots are bound to have bands performing, like Peril at The Savoy, but a big night of hard rocking music is at The Bird tonight, so here's what you need to know!
Rudyard hard rock quartet Half A Man return to the local concert stage TONIGHT for their first concert of 2011! This group of talented local veterans have been carving a rightful name in the local scene since last summer, and their hard driving rock n' roll is sure to get people excited tonight at The Bird! Also of note for this show: Noted local drummer Mikey Bishop will sit in for the absent Doug Reed behind the drumkit, rejoining his former Lower S.E.S. and Bludgeoned bandmate Erik Rintamaki for tonight's concert! Joining them are local metal band Hammerspace, who'll look to set the tone with their brand of hard hitting progressive metal! I wonder how John Bergeron will do as the band's singer AND guitarist tonight? Time will tell! There is no cover charge for tonight's show, you must be 21 to enter, and I imagine there's a 10:00 PM start time. Remember, an I-500 Pub Crawl shirt isn't mandatory, but having one will get you drink specials! For more details, visit Half A Man's Facebook page! Sounds like a great night of hard rock and metal, I'd definitely consider going if I could! Check the above links for more, and for videos of Half A Man in action, click here!
Now, we head to Sault Ontario briefly, as TONIGHT is the next metal night at The Roosevelt Hotel! The lineup has been taking some hits though, so here's what we know at present. The lineup was originally supposed to comprise of Desbarats death metal band For All That Is Lost, and local death metal bands Bring The Fallen & The Bear Hunters. However, Bring The Fallen dropped out a few days ago, and were replaced by another local death metal band, State of Misery. Well, that's not the only change, as promoter Rich Moreland confirmed on his personal Facebook page an hour ago that For All That Is Lost have dropped out as well. I haven't seen public word on why they're off of the show, but it's a shame, I was looking forward to seeing them! I can now confirm that replacing them will be local hardcore quintet As It Stands, who will now have the middle slot tonight, with State of Misery headlining. Good to hear, they should deliver a hard hitting set of their own! And with State of Misery and The Bear Hunters as well, there's good stuff to go around no matter what! This concert (no matter who's playing) starts at around 9:30 PM tonight, there is NO COVER CHARGE, and you must be 19 to enter! For more details, check out the Metal Nights at The Rosie Facebook page!
I'll be there, despite the lineup changes, as really, metal is metal! Doesn't matter how short notice the bands are, they'll deliver! You guys should head out too, there's a solid lineup in store! Check the above links for more, and for a preview, here's State of Misery playing their song "Stand The Fuck Up" at the last Rosie metal night!
Back to Sault Michigan again for our last known metal concerts of the weekend over there, as local hard rock quintet Splitshot return to the stage! The new local band featuring former Nixxon Dixxon members Chris Hubbard and Kyle Beaumont will return to The Rapids Lounge at Kewadin Casino tomorrow night and Saturday night for their first local shows of 2011! Both of these shows have announced 9:00 PM start times, there's no announced cover charge, and again, you have to be 21 to enter. I still don't know how Splitshot sound, but with the pedigree of members they have, I wouldn't be surprised if they were full of talent and solid rock covers! Check the above links for more details, and if you check them out this weekend, tell us how they were!
And we'll head back to Sault Ontario to close our weekend previews, starting at Docks Riverfront Grill, where Turner Up make their long awaited debut at this venue! Originally scheduled to make their debut there last month for a typical weekend set, That's Chester eventually replaced them after they dropped out, but now they're back to rock Docks this weekend! These are actually the last confirmed dates from the band's extensive concert schedule that was posted on their Facebook group last year, but believe me, they have MUCH more on the horizon, and we'll talk about some of them in our next news post. For now though, focus on Docks! Both shows have 10:30 PM start times, 19+ age limits, and no announced cover charges. For more details, check the above links and the official Facebook event page! Sounds like fun, hopefully they leave a big mark and will come back there in the future! I still have to go to Docks one of these weekends, I've never been there before. Check them out this weekend if you can, and for a preview, here's Turner Up covering Guns N' Roses' "Mr. Brownstone" last month at The Rockstar Bar!
And finally, Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison has a double shot of acoustic solo shows this weekend! Firstly, he's back at The Big Cheese in Heyden tomorrow night in another stop for his continuing bi-weekly arrangement there, before heading to Foggy Notions on Monday night for another show in his weekly series there! While the wait continues for Caveman Morrison's return, you have options to see very similar material, just go see Tym solo this weekend! His acoustic covers will surely leave an impression, so check him out this weekend if you can! Both shows have 10:00 PM start times, no announced cover charge, and 19+ age limits. For more details, visit the above links and click here for the Facebook event page for tomorrow's Big Cheese show! Sounds good, hopefully Tym rocks both venues with his solid playing and entertaining covers! For a video preview, here's Tym covering Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" last year at Foggy Notions!
That's all for now, but stay tuned tomorrow for a review from TONIGHT'S Rosie metal night, and another packed news post! Thanks everyone!
