Triumph/April Wine Concert Video Showcase (Part 3!!)

I am expecting an influx of Three Days Grace concert videos to be hitting YouTube very soon (the first of them have already started going live), so let's keep our busy end-of-month stretch going by covering more of last week's Triumph/April Wine concert! Unless someone uploads new public videos from this past Wednesday of both bands, this will be our last showcase of videos from attendees who filmed both bands, though there are more who only filmed Triumph that we'll talk about hopefully this weekend. The bulk of the public YouTube videos were addressed on the SMS already, but one more YouTube channel has videos of both Canadian hard rock legends, namely Denmark Street Pedal, which has a number of concert videos from literally all over the world, but this is the only local show that they have filmed at over the last two years. Possibly an intentional trip to be at Triumph's reunion tour kickoff? In any event, D.S.P. filmed one video of each band.

Their Triumph video is of them playing "Allied Forces", and it is a shame that Denmark Street Pedal didn't get more videos, as these are the best quality videos that I have seen from the show! A close placement on the floor (looks to be second row), a high quality camera with clear audio, and a nice vantage point of the stage with strong zoom combine well with an up tempo performance from all involved, with Phil and Todd handling vocals well so Gil Moore can focus on drumming. Don't bypass their Triumph video below!

Next up, we'll take a brief detour to Facebook, as a representative of Sault Ontario rock radio station 104.3 The Fox was in attendance, filming three short videos of Triumph's set for this batch post from their Facebook page that also included two April Wine videos and four photos. Their videos include a 19 second clip of "Somebody's Out There" and two short chunks of "Hold On" (the first 51 second video is embedded below, and click here to watch the 0:41 second part). Unfortunately, all three were shot vertically, but the filmer had a good view of the stage from the stands, and the audio was clear, so if only these were horizontal and full songs! Give these a look also!

As in parts 1 & 2 of our Triumph/April Wine concert video posts, we'll look at videos of April Wine from the same filmers for the back half, with the aforementioned Denmark Street Pedal filming them playing their classic single "I Like To Rock". Like with the "Allied Forces" video above, the overall quality here is excellent, and it does show the talent and enthusiasm that the current April Wine have, even if there's no original members left, so definitely check this video out for yourselves below!

Finally, we'll head back to 104.3 The Fox's Facebook page's batch post from last week, as they filmed two abbreviated vertical videos of April Wine's set, including 23 seconds of "Roller" and, as embedded below, 50 seconds of the guitar/drum solos & bridge of "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen". Again, I wish these were longer and horizontal, but what we do hear sounds good and you get a clear look at the stage given where the filmer was seated, so check out The Fox's April Wine videos above & below as well!

Triumph/April Wine Concert Video Showcase (Part 2!!)

You know the Triumph/April Wine concert at GFL Memorial Gardens on Wednesday was a huge success, as we have even more videos from the show to feature on here, and I'm gonna have to extend our fallout posts to four as a result! Today's videos weren't even uploaded when I was writing up our first Triumph video post on Sunday, so let's dive right in to our look at 32 brand new videos from two different YouTube users!

We'll start with YouTube user hbogie321go's YouTube channel, and no word on if this is the same person as hbogie123, who also uploaded videos from shows at the then-Essar Center in the early 2010s. Same person or not, you may recognize hbogie321go from posting videos from 2024's Sheepdogs and Chase Rice concerts in the Soo, among many others out of town. From the headlining Mississauga hard rock band's set, hbogie321go filmed them playing "When The Lights Go Down", "Hold On", "Allied Forces", "Rock & Roll Machine", Rik Emmett's extended guitar solo after that song, their cover of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way", solos and introductions from the rest of the band, most of "Magic Power", "I Live For The Weekend", "Fight The Good Fight", and as embedded below, "Lay It On The Line". For one reason or another, a few of hbogie's videos were separately uploaded as "Shorts" videos.

Three brief vertical videos can be seen thusly, namely portions of "Somebody's Out There", "Follow Your Heart", and the last minute of "Magic Power". Why that song was broken up (and filmed in two aspect ratios), I don't know, but the vertical excitement(?) doesn't stop there, as four of the regular videos were also shot like that. At least most of the videos are in a normal widescreen orientation, and hbogie was in a good central spot on the floor to capture the set. A lot of attendee heads and arms can be seen up front but it gives a good silhouette effect for reactions! Solid quality in spite of orientation flips with strong performances from Rik, Gil, and crew, so give this batch of videos a look above and below!

Like on Sunday, we'll pick things back up with hbogie321go in a second so we can check out more of Triumph's set, this time via prolific local concert filmer Christopher Paci's YouTube channel! Yes, I am aware that he was also at the Pop Evil concert, stay tuned for those videos soon. All but two of Chris' Triumph videos were songs that hbogie filmed, with these uploads including "When The Lights Go Down", "Spellbound", "Hold On", "Rocky Mountain Way", "Lay It On The Line", "Follow Your Heart", "Magic Power", "Fight The Good Fight", and as embedded below, "Rock & Roll Machine". While not as centrally located, Chris looks to have been about second row on the floor, and we get a clearer look at the staging setup thusly! The framerate seems lower on these clips (this could be my computer's fault, granted) but Chris zooms in a lot, and the audio is clear, so give his Triumph videos a watch above and below as well!

As on Sunday, the back half of this post is devoted to videos of Halifax hard rock band April Wine's opening set from the same filmers, though neither filmed nearly as much. In hbogie321go's case, he filmed Brian and the gang playing "Oowatanite" and, as embedded below, "Roller", while his "Shorts" videos included their cover of Hot Chocolate's "You Could Have Been A Lady", "Say Hello" , "I Like To Rock", and "Enough Is Enough". Shakier camera than we would later see from his Triumph videos, but these are both quality videos of the modern version of April Wine, so give these a watch above and below!

Finally, Chris Paci got three April Wine videos last week, including "I Like To Rock", "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen", and as embedded below, "Say Hello". The same framerate drop aside, everyone sounds good here (even with the lack of original members), and they know these classic songs as well as you'd hope, so check them out above and below for yourselves!

Triumph/April Wine Concert Video Showcase (Part 1!!)

It's high time that we spotlight videos from Wednesday night's Triumph/April Wine concert at GFL Memorial Gardens on the SMS, and we have a lot of videos to rifle through, from at least eight different public channels and uploaders! While local news media didn't cover it in person from what I have found, the concert was a rousing success based on social media reports, which is great to see! To start our (at least) three fallout posts from Wednesday, we'll look at videos of both Canadian classic hard rock legends from two different filmers, so here's what you should know!

Most of the current YouTube videos from the show come from attendee Chris Berlinguette, who posted 12 videos to his YouTube channel, joining a few dozen other concert videos from elsewhere in Ontario and even in Buffalo, New York. Nine of his videos are from Triumph's headlining set, where he filmed the reunited Mississauga legends playing "Hold On", "Allied Forces", "Blinding Light Show", "Rock & Roll Machine" split across two videos (here and here), their cover of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way", "Lay It On The Line", "Follow Your Heart" (complete with a partial cover of "24 Hours A Day" at the start), and as embedded below, their two encore songs, namely "I Live For The Weekend" and "Fight The Good Fight". You'll notice by the video lengths that Rik, Gil, and crew are very amenable to jamming and extending songs live ("Rocky Mountain Way" alone is a 9 minute video), so fans got their money's worth!

Give their long hiatus as a touring concern, Triumph sound pretty good overall in these videos, and their touring musicians do beef things up without taking away from the original lineup, though bassist Mike Levine did not join the tour due to a long-term hand injury. Note the locally unique sight of Gil Moore and Brent Fitz drumming on stage simultaneously! The lighting and video screen definitely adds to the presentation, and they picked a solid cross-section of hits from their original run! Chris also had a good vantage point of the stage from the floor, clearly from the third or fourth row. Check out his Triumph videos for yourselves above and below!

We'll pick things back up with Chris in a second, but for some more Triumph videos, let's look at the three uploaded by the non-local tourism YouTube channel Two Thirsty Travelers, which does feature a bunch of live concert videos from far-flung locales. One of the thirsty travelers filmed three Triumph songs on Wednesday, namely "Somebody's Out There", "Never Surrender", and as embedded below, "Hold On". Props to touring bassist Todd Kerns for wearing a Marco Mignosa Soo Greyhounds jersey for part of their set too! The travellers were in side-stage seating, giving us a clearer and more open look at everyone in action, if sacrificing a real look at the audience, but things sound good, so give them a look above & below also!

For the back half of this post, we'll look at the above filmers' videos of Halifax hard rock legends April Wine's first local concert set in 13 years, and first since the retirement & death of frontman Myles Goodwyn. Chris Berlinguette filmed three videos from their set, including "I Like To Rock", a triple header of the back half of "Just Between You & Me", "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen", and "Roller", and as embedded below, both "Oowatanite" and their cover of Hot Chocolate's "You Could Have Been A Lady". Now, April Wine have no original band members left (and long-time guitarist Brian Greenway is the only current member who was even in the band before 2011, so I understand there being fans who don't really consider this to truly be "April Wine". That said, Brian has assembled a talented band to carry the name forward, and Myles did give the current touring band his blessing before he retired in 2023.

The performances here are sound, and from experience, I honestly hear April Wine a little more frequently on local radio than Triumph, so the familiar songs are done in a way that won't alienate fans beyond debating their authenticity compared to the 1970s band. Marc Parent has good energy and melody to his vocals, though some higher notes don't come easy. Good stuff for fans of these classic songs, so give Chris' April Wine videos a look!

Lastly for this post, the aforementioned Two Thirsty Travellers filmed two videos of April Wine's set, specifically them playing "I Like To Rock" and, as embedded below, "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen". These are both songs that Chris also filmed, so interest here will primarily be around the side-stage angle, but they're still a good look at the guys in action playing some familiar hits from back in the day, so give these a look above and below as well!

The Triumph/April Wine Concert Preview, Plus Fallout From The BAG's Album Release Party!!

I have a packed news post for the SMS on this Tuesday morning, which includes a big preview for a mid-week concert tomorrow night, and some notes on what went down at another downtown venue this past weekend, including an album release and videos of an opening band, so without any further ado, here's what you should know!

We'll lead off with a major concert preview for TOMORROW NIGHT, as reunited Mississauga, Ontario hard rock legends Triumph will kick off their 50th anniversary reunion tour here at GFL Memorial Gardens! Alongside a touring lineup including Bon Jovi guitarist Phil X and members of Slash's solo band The Conspirators, original Triumph members Rik Emmett, Mike Levine, and Gil Moore will join forces for this milestone tour, with tomorrow's local stop being Triumph's first here since they rocked the old Sault Memorial Gardens in 1985. As this is the first show on the tour, we will be among the first to see and hear how Triumph sound in 2026, let alone how involved Rik, Mike, and Gil are throughout, so look for classic hits like "Hold On", "Magic Power", and "Say Goodbye" during their set! Opening tomorrow are Halifax hard rock veterans April Wine in their first local gig since rocking Sault Michigan in 2013 and their first in Sault Ontario since 1999.

Since we last saw April Wine in the area, Marc Parent has succeeded the late Myles Goodwyn on vocals, and he has the right voice and presence to handle "You Could Have Been A Lady", "Roller", and "Enough Is Enough"! This all ages concert goes down tomorrow at 8:00 PM, and there are limited tickets available at this link and at the arena box office for the floor and in sections 108-109 and 117 from $60.50, with VIP passes also available. This should be a great time for fans of vintage Canadian hard rock, so see above for more details, and here's Triumph live in their pre-tour kick-off in Orlando!

Next up, here's some fallout from Saturday night's album release party from local metal trio The BAG, so let's talk about their debut album "Sacculus", which did indeed drop on major streaming platforms that night! CD copies were on sale at the concert at Soo Blaster, but they did not specify what those cost on social media, or if they will be available at any brick-and-mortar stores. You can stream "Sacculus" on YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and Qobuz, though Google searches don't list other platforms, so poke around elsewhere if you're curious. No, it is not on Bandcamp, but you can buy the album on iTunes for $8.91. "Sacculus" features nine songs, all with titles capitalized except "6", which (confusingly) is track #5. The album does not feature their 2022-2023 singles "Roadkill", "Get Out", "Our Rock", and "Eccentric Refuge" for unannounced reasons.

It's not unheard of for some local bands to exclude prior standalone singles on their eventual full album (ask Jonesy Land and Heavy Lies The Crown for proof), but I'd have included them, if only to lengthen the album and get those songs on CD! The producer of the album is credited solely as "Gene" on streaming services. Two songs have a guest performer, including A.S.D.P./Agnosticism singer/guitarist Mikhal Muto (who promoted the release concert) on "Emergency Room Mayhem (Break Through The Gates)", and Jordan Alexander (who I'm not familiar with musically) on the "gurd version" of "Dream Machine". Did they intentionally misspell "good"? Regardless, that and the original version are on the full album if you want to compare the two. With all of the above said, and some blanks still left to fill, when can you expect our review of the full album? Believe it or not, it's currently scheduled for a review on the SMS in January.

This is our current queue for new album releases for the rest of the year (by release date order): The Realignment Project, Pillory, Viscera, Mike Haggith, A.S.D.P., Heavy Lies The Crown, The Realignment Project again, X's & Y's, and finally, The Sole Aggressors. We've been blessed with new albums in recent months, and you can see the conundrum that has developed! It is coming, I promise, but congratulations to Spencer, Austin, and Bradley/Ben on finally getting "Sacculus" out! Listen to track #1 ("Braindead") below!

To close today's post, I wanted to share some videos from the release party, and while The BAG and most openers have not done so publically that I'm aware of, Pillory have, courtesy of drummer Bret Shuttleworth's personal YouTube channel! Bret posted six videos from the show there, including four videos from an attendee of the back half of their set, but I'll embed the full 33+ minutes long drumcam video that Bret uploaded here today. In performance order, the death metal trio played started with their usual intro ("End Of Small Sanctuary" from Silent Hill 3) before playing their originals "Specimen Of Egotism", "Abhorred Apprehension", "Curse Of Eternal Sickness", "The Angst Of Existence", "The Passing", and "A Drop Of Shame In An Ocean Of Guilt". Of note, the latter song (which is not on Pillory's new full-length album "Old Soul") was separately uploaded as a cropped & vertical video on Bret's channel.

Pillory next headed back to their thrash metal roots to play an original intro named "The Stalker" that was the last piece of music that they wrote with original second guitarist Andres Duchesne before his passing (nice of the guys to pay tribute to him!). That segued right into a cover of Death's "Pull The Plug" to close the set. The drumcam angle isn't ideal to capture the whole view (as such, you never see Robert), but it's a ferocious half hour, and Robert's stage presence and banter is slowly improving! You've gotta love Devon's Crimson Crusade shirt too, they were a solid band, and their Death influences were always present. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Triumph & The Nameless) And More Weekend Concert Previews!!

Today's post is a little longer than expected due to a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT popping up, but with the rest of this weekend's known hard rock shows to cover, and a huge new show coming in a few months, I was too far in to try to edit things out. Here's what you should know!

Sault Michigan hard rock cover quartet The Nameless will return to The Merchants Bar for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show was actually first announced via their Facebook page back on November 28th, but that completely slipped me by at the time. At least they did announce it, unlike their Brimley VFW Veteran's Ride gig last month! The Nameless last rocked The Merch (or the Soo in general) back in August, and it will be good to see their lively and hard edged slate of covers back on stage! Their own promotion for TOMORROW'S concert implies that there could be an ugly sweater party theme, but they nor the venue (who almost never promote bands playing there on social media) have outright confirmed that, so it could just be seasonal hype. Everything goes down TOMORROW at 9:00 PM with a 21+ age limit and no cover charge. See above for more details, and for a preview,here's The Nameless live!

Next up, reunited Mississauga, Ontario hard rock icons Triumph and Halifax hard rock legends April Wine will kick off their Rock & Roll Machine Reloaded Tour at GFL Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, April 22nd! Triumph's return has been the talk of many rock fans this week, and they remain classic & active rock radio staples to this day with hits like "Lay It On The Line", "Hold On", and "Somebody's Out There", so it will be really neat to see them back in town to begin their 50th anniversary reunion tour! Triumph last played here at the old Gardens way back on April Fools Day in 1985, so what's a 41 year wait? A lot of the discourse about Triumph in 2026 has been about who exactly is playing in the band for this tour, including rumours that some original members will only be playing select dates, but according to the band's Facebook page, original members Rik Emmett, Mike Levine, and Gil Moore will all be touring North America next year.

Joining them on tour are Bon Jovi guitarist Theofilos "Phil X" Xenidis (who was a late-era Triumph member in the early 1990s), and two members of Slash's solo band The Conspirators (bassist Todd Kerns and drummer Brent Fitz). This could imply that the touring members could fill in for Rik, Mike, and Gil on certain songs, or we could get double the bass and drums, but I know Triumph fans kinda expect to see the original band, so hopefully we get our fill! As for April Wine, we've seen them multiple times between the Twin Saults, most recently at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino in 2013, but this will be their first Sault Ontario gig since headlining at The Roberta Bondar Pavilion in 1999. As fans may recall, frontman Myles Goodwyn retired from touring with April Wine in 2022 before passing away the following year, but he gave his blessing for long-time guitarist Brian Greenway to take over leading April Wine and continue touring.

As such, the lineup playing here in April will be the same as what fans saw in Sault Michigan in 2013, only with Marc Parent as their new lead singer and rhythm guitarist, but Marc has the chops to tackle classics like "Roller", "I Like To Rock", and "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen"! Tickets for this all ages and 8:00 PM concert went on sale today at 10:00 AM at this link and at GFL Memorial Gardens' in-person box office, but this is a pricey one, as the cheapest tickets run for $88.65. Many closer seats are reserved for VIP passes too, and there good perks therein, so check online for details. This should be a huge show, and it's neat that the reunion tour begins here, so visit the above links for more on Triumph & April Wine in the spring!

Now to close out this weekend's hard rock concert previews, and fittingly, what's left is all at Beck's Bar, starting with prolific local acoustic rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison, who will play their weekly Saturday matinee timeslot TOMORROW! No stranger to frequent bookings at one locale, this will be Tym's second show at Beck's this week, having played their most recent Sunday matinee gig as well, so if you missed that performance, here's your encore! This won't be Tym's last Beck's gig of the year however, as he will be back at the former Vibe Lounge for their last Sunday matinee timeslot of the year on the 28th, let alone his upcoming Misty's and Eagles Club stops, so fans have lots of chances ahead. You can enjoy his unplugged classic and hard rock covers tomorrow at 3:00 PM with a 19+ age limit and no cover charge, and we'll address the nightcap there in a second. Finally, who's playing at Beck's TOMORROW NIGHT? None other than southern hard rock trio Bone Yard 225, who will be playing the rare double header at the Goulais Avenue nightclub this weekend, as they're headlining their SUNDAY matinee timeslot as well! As usual, the Sunday matinee acts at Beck's traditionally play acoustic, so that will be Bone Yard's final "uncorked" show of 2025, a fact to keep in mind when planning your live music attendance this weekend, especially if you like Greg, Alex, and Warren in this form factor! Of course, tomorrow's concert is the big one, with fully electric instruments, so if you've missed them at this venue since the Halloween weekend, then come on down for your local 225's hard rocking covers and their increasing slate of originals! As a reminder, Tym Morrison is not "opening" for Bone Yard tomorrow, he and the band each have four hour timeslots spaced two hours apart.

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Clutch & Selias), 104.3 The Fox Updates, And A 1999 Concert Bootleg!!

Let's dive into some more big news on this Wednesday morning, including a surprise local concert bootleg discovery, programming news from a local radio station, and leading off, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS on both sides of the border, so here's what you should know!

Toronto melodic death metal band Selias will head here for the second time in under six months when they perform at Soo Blaster once again on Friday, March 14th! As local metalheads may recall, Selias headlined Heavy North Entertainment's comeback concert there in September of last year, with next month's show kicking off the band's Western Canadian Annihilation Tour, which hopefully goes well for all involved! H.N.E. are promoting this show, in their first concert booking of 2025 and second since their relaunch. It's worth noting that drummer Tyler Reiner (better known currently from his work with Spades GT) is not pictured in Selias' newest band photographs, implying that he has left their ranks, though hopefully he comes back north with Spades soon! No word yet on opening bands, but in September, Selias were joined by fellow touring metal band Out Of Spite and six local hard rock/metal acts, including some big returnees.

One of those openers was new local technical death metal band Bardo (fronted by Heavy North Entertainment owner Tyler St. Amour), but I have no idea if they're playing next month. We'll let you know when additional bands are confirmed! No word yet on ticket prices or availability therein, but last year, the show was all ages with an early 5:00 PM start time to accommodate the eight band lineup, and tickets ran for $15 online, at Soo Blaster, via local openers, or at a couple of Queen Street East businesses.  There's blanks to fill in ahead, but visit the above links for more on Selias' St. Patrick's Day weekend stop at Soo Blaster next month!

Next up, here's yesterday's big Sault Michigan concert announcement for The Dreammakers Theatre at their Kewadin Casino branch, as Maryland stoner/hard rock quartet Clutch will make their local concert debut on Thursday, June 19th! While not a mainstream rock radio presence, Clutch have carved out a devoted following with their bluesy but hard hitting brand of original rock in the past three decades thanks to fan favourite songs like "Electric Worry", "The Regulator", and "X-Ray Visions", and it will be neat to see them in town this summer! If press releases and news sites like Blabbermouth are to be believed, Clutch will be playing their self-titled 1995 album in full on this tour, so fans of "Spacegrass" will be excited! Openers on the Full Ahead Flank MMXXV Tour will include Nashville southern hard rock quartet Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown and Washington D.C. folk/country singer/guitarist Nate Bergman.

While we're obviously getting heavier as the night progresses, Tyler and Nate have a lot of talent, so don't bypass their sets for some bluesy southern fare! This all ages concert (on Juneteenth, no less) has an 8:00 PM start time, and this one is standing room only, so the seats are gone for the night. Tickets go on sale for $55 USD on Friday at this link, at the in-person box office, or at 1-800-KEWADIN, but pre-sale tickets are already available if you have the requisite code. I wouldn't have had Clutch pegged as a band that I expected to rock the Twin Saults in 2025, but this should be a solid concert, and decidedly unique compared to what often comes to the Soo Kewadin, so see above for more details!

Now let's dive into some programming updates from new Sault Ontario rock radio station 104.3 The Fox! The big reveal is that morning drive program The Brock & Dalby Show now has a nighttime version airing weeknights from 8:00-10:00 PM on The Fox and its sister stations in Northeastern Ontario and Kingston. As best as I can gather, this features condensed/select host segments heard in their regular 5:30-9:00 AM timeslot in between music, and it premiered after The Biggs & Barr Show on Monday night. Another note that I didn't bring up when first covering the relaunched CJQM is that Tuesdays have a slight theme, namely "Two For One Tuesday", where two back-to-back songs featuring the same artist (if not always in the same band) will be played on occasion. This is hardly an all-day, every-song theme (like "Twofer Tuesday" is on WRIF in Detroit), but it's something different every so often on Tuesdays!

Lastly, I never mentioned when noting local midday DJ Dan Koo's on-air work that he has a segment of his own called "Dan's Big Three", where he quickly goes through three big local news stories. It sounds like things are going well for the former Q104 in their new format, and I am enjoying the variety that their existence affords in conjunction with Rock 101, so continue tuning into 104.3 FM on your radio dial or online!

Finally, many readers will be aware of concert bootlegs being popular among diehard fans and collectors, and the Soo was not immune to getting them on occasion. Back on July 15th, 1999, Halifax hard rock legends April Wine headlined in Sault Ontario at The Roberta Bondar Pavilion, one of their (at least) three local concert stops, including one at Sault Memorial Gardens in 1984 and another at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino in 2013. The 1999 show was recorded by rej1064 and remastered by Rocker200, and was first uploaded to the bootleg forum Dimeadozen in 2006, with the YouTube channel Classic Rock Live Concerts posting it publically on Sunday. I won't list the track order here, as you can see it below via the bootleg's back cover, but the hits that you expect April Wine to play were represented in the 17 song set. The audio quality isn't pristine, but you hear enough to get the gist of how April Wine sounded in 1999!

There are some abrupt stops between songs, so I take it that rej1064 was trying to record individual tracks and/or cut down on between-song banter/introductions. Still, 75 minutes of legit local concert audio from 26 years ago is really neat, especially as it predates the YouTube generation where you can readily find full concert streams from the past two decades, and the band sounds good throughout this concert. LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Curtis McKenzie), April Wine Concert Updates, And Weekend Concert Previews!!

Before we kick off our weekend concert previews, just a heads up that LopLops Lounge's website lists an unplugged concert from The Din as taking place there on Saturday night, even though The Din (as far as I can tell) have not acknowledged it publically. Given the lack of promotion from the band, I'm inclined to believe that this show was an old & cancelled plan, but if we are wrong, we'll let you know! Now, let's dive into hard rock concerts that we can confirm for this weekend, and a big update for an upcoming show, but we'll start with a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!

Eclipse frontman Curtis McKenzie will play his third solo concert at The Vape Escape at 677 MacDonald Avenue TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the show was only announced via it's official Facebook event page on Tuesday. In case you're not familiar, The Vape Escape is a new lounge and events venue geared towards e-cigarette users that opened last month inside the old Style Studio location at the Dulux Paints-anchored strip mall behind Tim-Br Mart, complete with paid membership available for diehard vapers. I actually lived in the apartments across the road from this complex as a kid (back when the paint store was Bandito Video), and it's nice to see a new business with buzz opening there! The Vape Escape has hosted a few live performances there from DJs or acoustic artists, with Curtis' solo show TOMORROW actually being his third there in the past 5 weeks, having previously played solo matinee concerts there on May 20th & June 9th.

Profuse apologies for missing those, the venue is still unfamiliar to me for coverage, and Curt's solo project had been dormant for a long while before he started playing (regular?) solo gigs there. Suffice to say, expect similar song choices from his band work TOMORROW, and in a personal Facebook video, he's seen breaking out the old Project 421 standby "Breaking the Chains" (by Dokken), so expect some acoustic hard rock action! Whether you vape or not, this show has no cover charge, it has an early 7:00 PM start time, and there is an 18+ age limit. See above for more details, Curt is back in our band links, and hopefully some solo videos turn up publically!

Next up, we'll move to previously announced concerts with two more acoustic shows, courtesy of prolific local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison's ongoing weekly run of shows at Gliss Steak & Seafood TOMORROW & SATURDAY! As his matinee unplugged shows at the Quality Inn's house restaurant march into yet another weekend, fans should expect more quality hard and classic rock renditions over the next two evenings, so don't miss out if you like Tym's solo music or haven't seen him lately! Note that a personal Facebook posting by Tym confirmed that he's going back to thrice weekly gigs at Gliss in the near future (adding Thursday matinees again), as well as taking a vacation weekend off, but we will wait for public confirmation on both before noting either in our listings. Tomorrow & Saturday's shows are at 6:00 PM with no announced cover charge or age limit, but remember the location. Visit the Facebook event page for more details, and here's Tym live!

In a brief detour to Sault Michigan, fans there can take in the return of Traverse City classic metal trio Peril as they rock The Rapids Lounge at the Sault's Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Now, we had listed these shows as being for Peril's sister metal band Scarkazm, as varying band and venue sources had contradicted each other regarding which of the two bands was playing this weekend, but Peril are promoting playing this weekend, so my most recent information was either incorrect or changed again. Apologies for any mix-up, I've had to field confusion on these shows since February, but they are 100% now Peril gigs, not Scarkazm! As such, this will be Jeff, Adam, and Brooks' first Rapids Lounge weekend of 2017 (last playing there 9 months ago), so if you've missed their classic covers since then or didn't get to St. Ignace 3 weeks ago, here's your next best chance! If you're dead-set on seeing Scarkazm, they will be at this venue next month.

As usual for Peril's Kewadin gigs (the only ones they seem to play anymore), expect 9:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 21+ age limits. Check the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's Peril live!



Finally, here's a big update for the kickoff show for the Kewadin Shores Casino's summer concert series in St. Ignace on Saturday, June 24th, as Halifax hard rock legends April Wine have been forced to drop out of this show and other surrounding dates due to frontman Myles Goodwyn falling ill. Very disappointing to hear, but hopefully Myles gets well soon, it would have been fun to see them here again! As revealed earlier this week in this SooToday press release, former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford has been promoted to the headlining slot for the concert, while April Wine have been replaced by Jack Russell's Great White, the 2011-launched version of the Los Angeles hard rock quintet best known for hit songs like "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "Call it Rock 'n Roll". Fans may remember seeing Great White at the Soo Kewadin in January 2009, but they've since had an L.A. Guns-like split in two, with frontman Jack Russell reforming his own version of the band separate from the original group.

While I'm sure there are some fans that would prefer seeing the original band with Mark, Audie, Michael and Scott back, this is still Great White with their original frontman, plus classic-era bassist Tony Montana. They should deliver a solid night of tunes, including many familiar songs from Jack's last local stop eight years ago, so keep the new lineup in mind for one week from Saturday, and get your tickets (or inquire about refunds if you were set on seeing April Wine) at this link for $18 or $28! NLFB Meltdown & Handsome Sandwich Videos, Plus Much More Recent News & Notes!!

May is here, so let's kick things off with a busy news post, largely to clear out a lot of shorter recent stories that we couldn't get to over the weekend! However, we're leading off with some new videos, one of a new local band, the other of a recent concert event, so here's what you need to know!

After previously featuring winner M.D. Dunn in an episode two weeks ago, SooToday's music webseries Tuned with Donna Hopper returned with a new episode on Friday featuring more of a look at last month's NLFB Meltdown audition/battle of the bands at LopLops Lounge in full! The episode features Donna's interview with Northern Lights Festival Boreal director Max Merrifield (who MCed and helped judge the event), as they talked about the annual Sudbury music festival, why they're trying to make more of a Northern Ontario outreach to other communities like the Soo, future plans for the festival and Meltdown auditions, and the calibre of local talent on display. Good interview that definitely leaves the door open for a return Meltdown audition in 2018, and hopefully next year's is even bigger and has more advance lineup notice! Performance clips are scattered within the video of M.D. Dunn, The Din, Id Iota, Jackson Reed, and Mike Mikus, though oddly enough, there's no sign of The Autumn Roots. They had a good set, I wonder why they didn't make the cut?

It's great to see a new Tuned episode so soon after the previous (we had been waiting two months for a new one prior to M.D. Dunn's), and it helps sum up and promote the battle and the festival pretty well, so give it a look below, and best of luck to M.D. in Sudbury in July!



Next up, here's the first posted video on new local alternative/punk trio Handsome Sandwich's Facebook page, though sadly, it is not of a full band performance. It's actually of singer/drummer Johnny Belanger wrapping a custom label around a Bic lighter, then writing a somewhat obvious message on it afterwards, while Jesse Cook (I presume) plays backing guitar. There are numerous lighters on the table, so if I had to guess, are they giving out or selling lighters at their shows as sort of a band trademark? If that's the case, it's unique! Check out this new Handsome Sandwich video below, and don't miss them TONIGHT opening for The Gutter Demons at The New American Pub, perhaps with lighters in tow?



Finally for today, here's six assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist, event, or venue name:

• Tickets for the April Wine/Lita Ford show outside of the Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace will go on sale this Friday for $18 or $28, and they'll be available at all of the usual Kewadin outlets, plus the gift shop at the St. Ignace branch. Our source is the show's official press release (as seen on SooToday), which also confirms that there will be two more outdoor shows to be announced in this concert series, and the stage will be along Horseshoe Bay on Lake Huron, which makes sense geographically. Sounds good overall, and get your tickets starting on Friday!
• We have changed the link on the SMS for Sault Ontario music promotion/photography company For The Music Inside from their website (which is currently down) to their Facebook page. F.T.M.I. are still active, but most (if not all) of their recent activity has related to concerts in Southern Ontario, where founders Joseph Kargiannakis and Sean Matthews appear to have lived in recent years. Give For The Music Inside a look though to see what they've been up to musically of late!
• Local progressive metal project Kraken Mara (featuring Late & Loud's Brendan Christie) unveiled the cover artwork for their upcoming debut EP on their Facebook page on March 31st, and it's a re-working of their prior photo of clouds over a highway with ominous red triangles. That same day, their website noted that their debut single would be released "very soon", and a Facebook post implied that their posted songs have had "recent edits", but no updates followed in April. Everything sounds promising and djent-laden, so stay tuned for more from Kraken Mara!
• New local private concert venue Mellow D's Underground is taking a hiatus while they move to a new location due to "a plethora of offers and a snowballing reputation", and once everyone knows about the cool spot, "it's just not cool anymore." Our source is power pop quintet The Noochin Lanterns' Facebook page (whose members run the venue) on Friday. The new location is presumably still private, but in the interim, The Lanterns did tease appearances at Harmony Beach and Bellevue Park, and a return of The Apocalyspe Afterparty, though whether these will be public or not isn't known. Stay tuned for more related news when it rolls in!
• After lengthy delays for the lineup reveal, CSA International broke their silence on Friday regarding June 18th's planned Rock The Border Music Fest at The Machine Shop, saying that they were "waiting on approval on various pieces of art work", as per the Facebook event page on Friday. The lineup (expanded to five bands) will now apparently be announced this Friday, with early bird tickets going for $45, general admission for $55-$60, and VIP packages also available. There's been a lot of pessimism in the past two weeks, and I admittedly don't know why artwork approval would delay the lineup, but fingers crossed things work out for Friday!
• Kelowna, British Columbia southern hard rock quartet The Wild have been added as co-headliners for the CKY concert at The Canadian Nightclub on June 8th, as per promoter J.D. Pearce on the Facebook event page on Friday, with The Wild also now joining CKY for their entire Canadian tour tun next month. Reminding me a bit of bands like Jackyl, The Wild should deliver a fun set of hard rocking originals next month on this now five band-concert, so don't miss out, and limited tickets are still available!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (April Wine & Beaver Slap), The Gutter Demons Concert Preview, And More!!

Alright, this will indeed be our final news post of April 2017! I was preparing to hold out until Monday, but we have two big LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS and a preview for a show on Monday as it is, so I thought I'd get these on the site now, plus some solo material from a prominent area frontman. Now, here's what you need to know!

Halifax hard rock legends April Wine and former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford will rock Kewadin Casino on Saturday, June 24th, but not the Sault Michigan branch, instead playing an outdoor event on the back lawn of The Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace! I have never heard of a hard rock show of this scale at the St. Ignace Kewadin, let alone outdoors (Kiss' 2007 show was in the Soo), but Kewadin's Facebook page notes that this is the kick-off to their summer concert series, so keep that in mind whether it's solely at this new outdoor stage or scattered throughout their casinos. Very intriguing regardless! This will be April Wine's first local concert stop since headlining at The Dreammaker's Theater four years ago, and with hits like "You Could Have Been A Lady" & "You Won't Dance With Me" dating back to the 1970s, you know they'll have a lot to draw from for their (at least) third regional concert! They also played in Sault Ontario in 1985.

As for Lita Ford, she became a very prominent sight in the late 1980s with solo hits like "Close My Eyes Forever" & "Kiss Me Deadly", and it'll be really cool to see her in our area in June, so keep her set in mind as well! I know my uncle will be very interested. Presumably all ages and at 7:00 PM, this concert's tickets will go on sale on Friday online, at the in-person Kewadin box office, and at 1-800-KEWADIN, though prices have not been announced as of press time. Next up, another new concert is official for the very same day in Saul Ontario, as all-female Barrie hardcore punk quartet Beaver Slap will make their local concert debut on Saturday, June 24th at The Algonquin Pub! These girls definitely have the hardcore punk style down, with their noisy crust-influenced originals sure to make a mark on local fans in June, and they should gain a lot of new fans when they rock the 'Gonq, so definitely check them out in advance! Local openers will include the Algonquin Pub debut of local doom trio AlgomA, returning to the stage following their recent European tour, while local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades will play a rare show from an outside promoter when they hit the stage for the second time with their new lineup. Solid choices, so don't be late for the local opening sets! Promoted by Six, Two, Oh. in their own Algonquin Pub debut, this 19+ show has a $7 cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time. Also today, let's get our preview of a special concert THIS MONDAY NIGHT rolling on the SMS, as Montreal psychobilly/punk trio The Gutter Demons will rock The New American Pub in two days' time! Note that the show was relocated last week from The Algonquin Pub for unannounced reasons, as per promoter J.D. Pearce on the Facebook event page, so keep the move to The New A in mind! Local fans have been waiting too long for a psychobilly headlining act on a local stage, and The Gutter Demons' punk-influenced and road-tested blend of styles should satiate genre fans when they rock the Soo on Monday! Local opening acts will include the second live concert appearance from new local punk/alternative trio Handsome Sandwich, as well as the 2017 debut of funk/hard rock favourites The Elements, with both bands notably featuring Jesse Cook & James White in their lineups. Both bands should provide a quality soundtrack to kick off the night, so don't miss out!

Notably the first promoted concert by J.D. Pearce of the year (and his first in six months), this show has a $10 cover charge, 19+ age limit, and a 9:00 PM start time. This should be a fun concert for fans of punk, funk, and psychobilly music, and there's a little bit of everything to enjoy with these three groups on Monday night, so visit the above links for more details, and here's The Gutter Demons live!

Finally, here's a new solo cover of Puddle of Mudd's "Drift & Die" from Banned frontman Alex Traynor! While we haven't heard from the Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock cover trio in a couple of weeks, Alex is staying busy in the interim with solo material of his own, even launching his own solo Facebook page to promote his own material, and in case you're worried, he confirmed there that he is still in Banned. Honestly, given how Alex has been the sole focus of Banned's Facebook imagery since 2014, you could say that these are de facto Banned recordings, but this recent solo material is branded separately under Alex's name. Said uploads include an original song named "Crazy World" on his Soundcloud page, and two shares of solo cover videos from his personal Facebook page, including "Drift & Die" and a rendition of Santana's "Smooth", both as filmed by Eric Cairns at Third Cinema Productions. So, how do Alex's new solo recordings sound overall?

Not bad, he has a solid grasp of the covers, with "Drift & Die" a good vocal match, and "Smooth" allows him to showcase his guitar skill! As for "Crazy World", it's an upbeat hard rocker, and it'll be interesting to see how far his solo work goes! In terms of adding Alex's solo project to our band links, I am waiting for more material to see if it's hard rock based, as I know some prior solo work of his diverged from our covered genres. Most Of This Weekend's Local Metal/Hard Rock Concert Previews, Including April Wine!!

Finally, we're back with a new post today! This week's been oddly quiet (especially with so many big events and happenings in the coming months), so I apologize for the recent lack of updates from the SMS camp, but I strive to never go 3 days without a new post, and I'm keeping to that today with this weekend's concert previews! Well, most of them, as I'm moving the Banned preview to our next post to spread everything out and give proper emphasis to the April Wine concert. There's a solid lineup of local metal & hard rock bands in the area tomorrow and Saturday night, so let's get right to it with the first of this weekend's shows!

We'll start with two Sault Ontario hard rock bands playing all weekend, including local classic metal trio Caveman Morrison's return to The Roosevelt Hotel tomorrow night & Saturday night! The band's first shows of 2013, these come three weeks after a cancelled concert weekend at The Rosie that would have been among the first regional metal shows of the year, so it's great to see Tym and company back on the live stage despite the delay! I'd expect them to have a lot of great metal and hard rock covers in store, as usual if you've seen Caveman Morrison before, so keep a trip west to The Rosie in mind for your weekend plans! Admission should be free for both tomorrow & Saturday night's gigs, you must be 19 to attend, and there's no announced cover charge. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Also in Sault Ontario this weekend is the next two shows from newer hard rock quartet The Suicide Kings, who'll make their Docks Riverfront Grill debuts tomorrow & Saturday night! Originally scheduled to play their first gigs at the higher end Foster Drive venue on January 12th & 13th, those shows were quietly cancelled on the 12th (possibly due to singer Mike Gaetano falling ill), but a month later, they'll finally rock Docks this weekend with their fast rising blend of originals and varied hard rock covers! It'll be good to see the upcoming Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands competitors back on stage, and hopefully the Docks crowd and their fans all have a great time! Admission for these shows should be in the $4 range, with 10:00 PM start times and 19+ age limits to be expected. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Hopefully this weekend's shows are a huge hit, and maybe it'll help open the door for more heavier bands at Docks? We close today's post with the third hard rock/metal show at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino on Saturday night, including three 1970s hard rock pioneers that are ready to rock! The headliners are the Juno nominated multi-platinum Halifax hard rock quartet April Wine, who'll bring their classic repertoire of hits like "Just Between You & Me" and "Enough Is Enough" for what should be a long awaited appearance in the area! After all, I don't think they've played in the region since rocking Sault Memorial Gardens on their 1985 "farewell tour", so this has been a long time coming! Their widely varied and often hard-edged sound should be easily welcomed to the area, and with the great Myles Goodwyn still up front, expect a great set! Support bands include the Steve Priest-led version of British glam/hard rock trailblazers Sweet (not the original version led by Andy Scott), who helped define glam rock in the 1970s with hits like "Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox On The Run", and even if this is a new version of the band, the lineup is promising, and the songs should rock all the same!

The openers on Saturday will be Illinois hard rock veterans Head East, who saw their own successes in the mid-1970s with songs like "Since You've Been Gone" and "Love Me Tonight", and their classic take on fun hard rock should be hard to beat this weekend! This should be a huge concert if the ticket availability is any indication, as just 19 tickets are left for the show (all but one in the 6th-8th rows), so if you don't have your tickets yet, get them A.S.A.P. at this location, in person at the Kewadin Casino box office, or by phone at 1-800-KEWADIN! This is an all ages show, everything starts at 7:00 PM on Saturday, and I'd call ahead in the event of a meet & greet, as you rarely hear advance online word for them. Classic hard rock fans should be all over this event, and with good reason, as these bands combined to give us a lot of well remembered and catchy original songs in their heydays, so don't miss April Wine, Sweet, and Head East at The Dreammaker's Theater on Saturday night! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Sebastian Bach & April Wine) And Weekend Concert Previews!!

We're back with another news/preview post, and it mostly covers Kewadin Casino concerts in the Eastern U.P. through February, so what's specifically on tap? We have previews of this weekend's metal/hard rock shows (including a date correction for a show this weekend in Sault Ontario), but first, here's some major LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for early next year at The Dreammaker's Theater!

Sebastian Bach is indeed coming back to Sault Ste. Marie next month, and yes, this is for a concert! Sault Michigan promoters Allstar Promotions have pulled the trigger, and will be bringing the former Skid Row frontman to The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino on Sunday, January 20th! Though Skid Row and Sebastian have had a lot of local passes (from the current Skid Row's shows here and later cancelled gigs to Sebastian's Swearnet film shoot this year), this will be Sebastian's first formal concert in the Twin Saults that I can tell, but there's already big anticipation for him to play here! Best known of course for his Skid Row tenure (which is full of huge hit songs like "Youth Gone Wild" & "18 & Life"), Sebastian Bach's solo career has taken off even more in recent years thanks to his well received albums "Angel Down" and "Kicking & Screaming", along with various stage and reality show appearances, and his classic influenced heavy metal has stood the test of time for sure! An opening band is to be announced for this show, but I'll note that Newberry hard rockers Smashcan are still campaigning on Facebook to open the concert, in what would be a rare Sault Ste. Marie appearance for this talented Eastern U.P. band.

Though Kewadin Casino's online pages have yet to confirm this show at present, tickets will apparently go on sale TOMORROW for $26.50, which is a great price, so make sure to get your tickets starting tomorrow morning at the Kewadin box office, this location, and at 1-800-KEWADIN! A 7:00 PM start time is likely, and I believe this is all ages. Check the above links for more details! It's different to see Allstar Promotions bringing in what could be called an older act, but Sebastian's timeless and still current, and his Skid Row classics and originals should go over excellently on January 20th! Stay tuned for updates as they come in, and get your tickets A.S.A.P.!

The other newer hard rock show at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino has actually been announced for a bit now, but it's new to me, as three early hard rock pioneers are coming to The Dreammaker's Theater in their own right on February 9th, including headliners April Wine! The multi-platinum Halifax quartet are well known for hits like "The Whole World's Goin' Crazy" and "Just Between You & Me", and while it seems odd to see them headlining on the Michigan side, they have a good fan base with classic and early hard rock fans, so it will be great to see Myles Goodwyn and company live in the area! Joining them are British rock legends Sweet (best known for hits like "The Ballroom Blitz" & "Little Willy"), who memorably helped pioneer glam rock in the early 1970s, and have a lot of entertaining heavier material from their later repertoire as well! Note that the version of Sweet playing here in February is the one led by founding bassist Steve Priest that formed in 2008, not the original version that are currently led by guitarist Andy Scott.

The opening band will be Illinois hard rock band Head East, they had some success in the mid-1970s with songs like "Never Been Any Reason" and "Love Me Tonight", and they should entertain with their own classic hard rock originals on February 9th! Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison is bringing his unplugged solo concerts back this weekend with two concerts at different venues, including a show TOMORROW at The Roadhouse Bar & Grill on Trunk Road, but he'll also be playing at The Eagles Club in Heyden on Saturday. This is one and the same as the show we plugged on Tuesday that Tym apparently played that night, but after that post went up, he fixed the Facebook event page to correct the date to Saturday night. I rushed that post to get it up A.S.A.P., so it made it on the site before the date correction, and I apologize profusely for any confusion! Nonetheless, Tym has a busy schedule for shows this weekend, so if you're in the East End tomorrow or in the Heyden area on Saturday, head out to see Tym rock some acoustic hard rock and metal covers!

Admission should be free for both of these 19+ shows, and 10:00 PM start times are likely. Check the above links for more details, and don't miss out on Tym's latest unplugged gigs if you can help it! And finally for the weekend's heavier concerts (at least, the ones I currently know about), as Sault Michigan hard rockers Monkey's Uncle will play their last Kewadin Casino concerts of 2012 TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino! I'm sure that the former Jager has played more recent shows too at other venues (and potentially more this month), but it's always good to hear some advance notice shows from this talented veteran band, especially as their online pages are only rarely updated! Expect lots of entertaining hard rock covers (and maybe originals?) from Monkey's Uncle this weekend, so don't miss out for some heavier weekend entertainment!
