It's time for this month's YouTube Channel Profiles, and it's funny how random selection works sometimes, as the first of the two channels we're looking at this month is linked to the drummer of a local band opening for Dead & Divine TONIGHT at The Canadian! As always, this series looks at 1-3 YouTube channels with a 50% or more concentration of local metal-relevant videos, and as the first channel we randomly picked this month only had two videos, we added one more with one video to fill things out. Channel Summary: Ostensibly a personal use YouTube channel, John used this channel off and on from it's 2006 creation through last year, though only two videos have been posted there (with a short combined length of 2:13.) These include an early concert commercial and a sample of live concert clips for both of John's recent primary bands, both coincidentally linked to winter concerts that John's bands opened.
Why Should You Watch: This channel is more for diehard fans of As It Stands and Out Of The Mouth Of Babes based on it's minimal use and content, but the videos included are unique and not posted elsewhere, so it's worth checking out on that basis! That said, John has not actively used his personal channel since February 2011, and official As It Stands videos from after their 2010 reunion have primarily been posted on their official YouTube channel instead, so keep that in mind in case you're wary of subscribing.

Out of the mouth of babes LIVE: The longest, newest, and most substantial of John's videos is this 1:50 collection of clips from his old band Out Of The Mouth Of Babes' only concert on February 20th, 2010 at the former GLOW Nightclub (then the Nite-Life Dance Club) as part of the Algoma Hope4Haiti fundraiser event that weekend, where they opened for Bring The Fallen & DJ Spruceau at that venue. Featuring As It Stands' instrumental members alongside singer Matt Maccarone (ex-A Fall From Innocence) during A.I.S.' 2009-2010 breakup, this video has the only publically available footage of O.O.T.M.O.B. playing their original material live, though it's cut into four small portions, the camera's focus & lighting are inconsistent, the audio is scratchy, and there's a watermark on the video as it's converter program was a trial version. Still, Out Of The Mouth Of Babes had promise in their brief run, and this video has glimpses of it, but hopefully some fuller video footage pops up at some point!
infamous: Though oddly named after John's old promotion company Infamous Productions and not the concert itself, this video (which is his both his first & most popular) is a 23 second commercial for a show that John put on & played at on December 16th, 2006 at The Oddfellows Hall. Featuring Quebec hardcore notables Blind Witness alongside As It Stands and touring out of town openers The Love & Terror Cult, Foxfight, and April Silenced, the commercial is somewhat minimalistic, though well done, but I have to ask: Why use a techno song ("Insomniac" by Faithless) instead of Blind Witness for the backing music? Watch after the band names for a shot of the poster for this concert!

Channel Summary: Though a resident of the northern Lower Peninsula, Sarah did make the trip up to Sault Ste. Marie to see Poison frontman Bret Michaels' most recent headlining concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino on December 27th, 2011, and she uploaded one video from said show early the following year on her then-new YouTube channel! It's of Bret Michaels covering the Poison classic "Something To Believe In" as preceded by some kind words and thanks to the actions & sacrifices of the American armed forces (awesome gesture!) I'm not a huge Poison fan, but this song is well performed, and if you like their & Bret's softer material, you'll like this video, especially thanks to it's nice quality and Sarah's very close seat! Note that this is Sarah's only upload, though she does still use the channel here and there.

Hey guys, it's time to kick off year 2 of our Defunct Local Band Profile Series, and seeing as 4/5ths of this band are playing at The Roosevelt Hotel later today, the timing couldn't be better! The joys of random selection, huh? As always, this series explores a band from the Sault Ste. Marie area that is either defunct or visibly inactive for a year plus (with no biases for sound, longevity, talent, or membership), and we'll tell you a bit about them, what to expect, and what you can check out and read about for said band! Only one song was recorded & posted on their MySpace page, entitled "Take A Walk With Me", though two versions of it were recorded with both of their frontmen. Both were recorded at idioRECORDS with producer Dave Hunter. I uploaded the version with Matt Maccarone singing from 2010 on our YouTube channel (I don't have the original), so check it out at this location! For actual videos, there isn't much either, especially given their single live concert, but at least two exist! A 1:50 long video featuring assorted clips was posted on YouTube in March 2010 by drummer John Mignacca, but here's a full performance from the show, as Out Of The Mouth Of Babes covered (oddly enough) "Last Name" by Carrie Underwood! Info/Analysis:Out Of The Mouth Of Babes formed in July 2009 out of the ashes of the then-defunct As It Stands, who broke up the previous month. The lineups of the two bands were almost identical, save for prolific local musician Josh McNally on vocals in lieu of Justin Pregent. Josh fronted the band for the next few months, though they never took the stage with this lineup, and he was quietly replaced by Matt Maccarone in late 2009. They finally made their live debut on February 20th, 2010, opening for Bring The Fallen at Nite-Life Dance Club (later GLOW) for their portion of the Algoma Hope4Haiti concert benefit event. It would be their only show, and updates stalled after April 2010, with a few announced shows never materializing. OOTMOB quietly ended that summer, and As It Stands (with Justin back) reunited that August to great fanfare. It's clear from As It Stands' quick resurgence that they made a wise choice reuniting, but Out Of The Mouth Of Babes deserve some love as well! Their style showed the progression that the new AIS songs have, while still being very heavy, moshable, & energetic, though with some added humour & similar flourishes. Matt Maccarone's singing suited their aims at the time, with better clean vocals & stage presence than Justin had showed then, but Matt's screaming was higher in tone. Josh McNally was good too, but his voice wasn't as heavy.
As It Stands' current form is much better & tighter than they ever were originally, especially with Justin's improvement, but OOTMOB deserve a lot of credit for helping the transition. From what little we heard, we knew there was a lot of good hardcore stuff there, and had As It Stands not returned, I'm sure their fans would have loyally followed Out Of The Mouth Of Babes!

I'm back with a new post! Felt a bit odd not having enough for a new post last night, but today, we have some good stuff to share, all of which comes from new videos! I have four newly found videos with a local metal/hard rock relevance to share today, so let's see what's new on YouTube!
Firstly, we have yet another video from last month's Kiss show at The Essar Center! This comes courtesy of YouTube user shledge, who uploaded their video of Kiss playing "Detroit Rock City" at the show onto their YouTube channel! "Detroit Rock City" sure seems to be a popular choice for videos from the concert, and it's a great song, so I can see why! Honestly, this is one of the better videos from the Kiss show that we've seen, the audio's clear, and the video's shot a close angle in a nice quality setting! I wonder if shledge got any more videos at the concert, cause this is definitely a standout clip from what we've seen so far! My only real complain about the video itself would be to center the camera on Gene, Paul, and Tommy more, cause we do get a lot more bare staging in frame than we really needed. Still, this is one of the best clips so far from the concert, so check it out below!
Second today is another concert clip, this time coming from Toronto-based Motley Crue tribute band Crued's show at The Canadian Nightclub from this past Saturday! This was uploaded onto drummer Ziggy's YouTube channel on Monday, and it's a 1:13 clip of the band playing "Livewire", or as he put it, "73 seconds of mayhem"! I really like their stage setup, and they definitely have the sound and look going, but we don't really get a lot of the song or band here. This is just the outro to the song, so we don't get to hear any singing or get a sense of how they pull off "Livewire" in full. Still, it's nice to see a video from the show, even if we don't get to hear too much of it. Oh well, I bet the show was awesome! Check the video out below!
Thirdly is one of two videos I've only just recently discovered on a local musician's YouTube channel! As It Stands drummer John Mignacca is on YouTube, and he has two videos there that I'd never seen until he subscribed to the SMS' channel! One is a commercial for As It Stands' show at The Oddfellows Hall on December 16th, 2006, which also featured Blind Witness, April Silenced, Foxfight, and The Love and Terror Cult. It features the show's poster and techno music, oddly. I wonder how the show went? Check out the commercial at this location! But the one I'm embedding here is newly discovered live footage from the lone public show played by Out Of The Mouth Of Babes (pictured), from February at Nite-Life Dance Club (now GLOW Nightclub once again) at that venue's portion of Algoma Hope4Haiti! It's just 1:50 long, and it went through the trial version of Digital Media Converter Pro, so there is some text stamped on the video due to that, but try and ignore it. Still, check it out below, cause it gives one of the few video glimpses into Out Of The Mouth Of Babes, who filled the gap during As It Stands' breakup well! And finally, here's two jam videos you guys might be interested in seeing! These were uploaded onto Integrated System of Machines keyboardist Craig "Tubesock" Harrison's YouTube channel on Sunday and Tuesday each. The one uploaded on Sunday is a jam session video involving Craig's I.S.O.M. bandmates Steve "Sven Gilesten" Giles (pictured) on guitar and Bart "Black Trab" Rennels on drums! Well, I assume they're the Steve and Bart mentioned in the video's title, my assumption makes sense. It was uploaded from Craig's phone, so there's no additional details on it, but they sound good in this clip, I like the riffing especially! Check it out by clicking here! The other, which I'm embedding below, features Steve and his brother Greg (you'll recognize both from End of Existence, more on them soon), and it also sounds good! The drums stand out more on this one, and the music just seems to go a bit heavier and faster, and for longer time too! Good stuff, regardless of if it leads to more I.S.O.M. news or not! Man, homework SUCKS. My cache of local metal news is piling up, so I basically HAVE to update everyone today or people are gonna be wondering why this story or that info isn't getting plugged! Today's news will revolve around the topic of concerts: We have updates on two potential shows, a new band for one, and major updates on a certain local music festival, so here we go!
We have more info online concerning what to expect for this July's Kewadin Casino 25th Anniversary Summer Festival! Firstly, as you can see, they have an official event logo! Looks nice, though the colours scream "fall" more than summer. I'd have changed the brown to a red, but hey, they must have had their reasons! Also, a tentative schedule is now online for it at this location! Aside from the main headliners (Vince Neil, Bret Michaels, Three Doors Down, and Meat Loaf), specific bands have yet to be announced by Kewadin, so we'll have to wait and see! That being said, the schedule says that there will be "Entertainment" (I am 95% sure this means "Live Bands") at 12:00, 2:00, and 4:00 at 1 hour timeslots each day. If you noticed that there's one hour gaps between these sets, they're not dead air, DJ Chef will be on for an hour a piece at 1:00, 3:00, and 5:00 each day! Through more research on DJ Chef, I can tell you that he's a Food Network personality who has the unique ability to spin the turntables AND cook gourmet meals at the same time! Maybe not metal, but that takes obvious talent! Also, it should be noted that the headlining bands are listed as performing from 6:00-10:00 PM. I can't see a band being given four hours to themselves, so if you hear support bands added to that timeslot, don't be surprised!
As for the rest of the daily schedules, the "strolling magician" will be around to do magic tricks from 12:00-3:00, 4:00-7:00, and 8:00-10:00! The NASCAR simulator, Rock Band, birdie golf (I assume that's mini golf?), bumper cars, and mechanical bull will be active from 12:00-4:00, along with carnival food for sale! Registration for the daily eating contests is from 1:00-3:00 each day, I assume the contests themselves are in the same timeframe. Also from 1:00-3:00 are the autograph signings (Remember, Thursday has Playboy Bunnies, Friday has Detroit Lions players, and Saturday has The Fonz!) The bean bag toss tournament is from 1:00-7:00 daily, there's food and merchants throughout the day, and fireworks will conclude each night at 10:00 PM!
In terms of other new updates that I haven't mentioned yet, the festival itself will be held outside Kewadin Casino in the south parking lot & RV park, I believe in a similar location to where the Kiss concert was held. There are NO discounts or deals for tickets beyond the cheaper total rate for a three day pass. That being said, there are no children's rates, so they'll cost the same as adults. Doors (or should I say, gates) open at 11:00 AM daily for the festival, and all contests can be registered for at the registration table. Admission is general, but you'll need your own chair if you want to sit down on one. Coolers and outside beverages are prohibited, those 21+ will be marked at the beer tent, and tickets will be monitored at entry and exit. Kewadin's really pulling out all the stops, this should be one hell of a festival! You can guarantee that I'll keep you posted with updates on this festival, especially where newly announced bands are concerned, particularly of the metal variety! Next up, it appears that a new band has been announced for an upcoming death metal show! While I still haven't seen local press or a Facebook event page for it, Derelict and Thekillingfield are indeed coming to Foggy Notions on May 6th, and they will have company! The new band on the bill is Sudbury death metal quartet Beyond Within, who should be quite familiar to you local metalheads! Beyond Within have played here numerous times, mostly at The Oddfellows Hall, most recently last March as one of the support acts for Cattle Decapitation (coincidentally, Thekillingfield were also on the bill for that show!) I love Beyond Within, one of the most brutal death metal bands I've seen locally! In fact, one of my first local concert t-shirts was a Beyond Within one! It'll be weird seeing them at a bar though, I'm sure we're all more used to seeing them at The Oddfellows Hall! Trust me, metalheads, you'll love this concert! Check out more from Beyond Within at this location (their involvement in this show is confirmed there), and if I hear more on this concert, I'll be sure to share it with you all!
Now we come to shows that aren't confirmed totally yet, but there's interesting stuff about them to mention. Firstly, remember that possible Doom Cannon metal/hardcore show that may happen on May 18th? Well, the signs pointing to it's confirmedness continue to build, as Doom Cannon's MySpace page lists a May 18th concert in Sault Ontario with the venue being...The Oddfellows Hall. Exactly where I predicted it would be! Now this isn't enough to confirm this show yet, I've learned from past mistakes that often times, a show there can't totally be confirmed by a MySpace concert listing alone, so I will wait for official word from Jasmin Nott (the promoter) before I call this an official show. Time is getting thinner to properly hype it though, hopefully something 100% official pops up soon! In any event, a Doom Cannon-headlined hardcore show at The Oddfellows Hall on May 18th seems more likely than not, so keep it in the back of your head! And keep up to date on this potential show's happenings and news at the official Facebook event page!
And finally for today, here's another potential concert to keep on your radars! Local hardcore band Out Of The Mouth Of Babes (featuring 4/5ths of As It Stands and Matt Maccarone from A Fall From Innocence) have a possible concert listed for May 28th at Foggy Notions on their MySpace page! Little is given, just an 8:00 PM start time and the information that they will be playing with a band named Kingdoms. After a quick Google search, I can tell you that they are a hardcore band from Kitchener, not a bad sound to them! Now for what it's worth, Kingdoms' MySpace page lists a show in Etobicoke for that same day, so it may have been cancelled in the first place. But really, Out Of The Mouth Of Babes have announced a number of shows since their inception that led nowhere, like the show supposedly happening at The Oddfellows Hall this Saturday that's on their MySpace. Either the advertising for it is abysmal, they're really keeping it a secret, or it was called off too. Well, if I hear anything, I'll let you guys know, I just wish they were clearer about their show statuses!
I have lots more coming, likely tomorrow, mostly assorted news that doesn't apply to any specific concert, ranging from a glimpse at how a certain local band sound to a rock themed car wash?! All that and more tomorrow, hopefully, so stay tuned!
Hey guys, hope those of you who went enjoyed last night's Stillbroke show at The Rockstar Bar! I couldn't make it, but it sounds like it was a good concert, and there's lots more where that came from tonight and tomorrow! My last post has all you need to know on the metal side of things for the area this weekend, hopefully all the shows have good turnouts! But now, it's news/updates time, and we'll start with lots of new stuff concerning Lion Ride!
Remember when I said they were in the voting for a chance to play at the 14th Annual Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands in Toronto on July 9th at The Vans Warped Tour? Well, if you remember correctly, the top 100 would be the bands from which The Warped Tour would select competing bands. As of 4:44 PM today, Lion Ride are in 95th place with 74 votes, and are just 10 votes out of 86th. First place is a Toronto band named Majesty with 4,431 votes. VOTE FOR LION RIDE TODAY!!!! The more votes they get, the more odds that The Warped Tour will put them in the Toronto segment of the battle!
But that's not all when it comes to voting contests that Lion Ride has recently entered. Listen to this for a hypothetical: Imagine SLASH guest starring on a Lion Ride song. Not kidding either, it could happen! A new online contest called "Your Next Record With Slash" has been launched by Guitar Center in co-operation with the Velvet Revolver/ex-GNR axeman, and the winner will get a laundry list of cool prizes, and Lion Ride have entered! If they won, they would get to record a 3 song E.P. produced by legendary producer Mike Clink, of which Slash would write and perform on the single! They'd also get a management development deal with "The Collective", their single would be put on iTunes, plus they'd get a worldwide distribution deal with Tunecore, $20,000 worth of gear and endorsement deals, the opening slot on Slash's upcoming tour, and an editorial feature in Guitar World Magazine!
Now all that just sounds awesome, but it will never happen to Lion Ride unless we all support the cause! You have until April 30th to vote for your favourite bands in this contest for the right to get all these cool prizes, and of course, the E.P. with Slash's guest spot! Hopefully, of course, your votes will go to Lion Ride! To vote for Lion Ride for all of this awesome stuff, CLICK HERE! I don't know the criteria for who will "win", I'm assuming it's the highest voted band, but I can't say for sure. Also, if it counts for anything, the fan who votes the most between March 5th and 31st will win a Slash autographed guitar, so there's more incentive to vote! Next up, might Out Of The Mouth Of Babes have new shows coming up? If you look at their MySpace page, they list two shows this spring, including one April 20th at The Oddfellows Hall, and another on May 6th at Foggy Notions, the latter of which apparently also includes Bring The Fallen. Now I haven't seen any announcements of either of these concerts anywhere else, not on Facebook, not anywhere. Sometimes when a band lists a new show on MySpace alone, I feel confident about reporting it as confirmed, I'm not so sure on these two though. So I'll wait for second word before I confirm these as official local concerts, but keep them in mind! It'd be great to see OOTMOB back live, all you old fans of As It Stands should take notice too!
Now, back to the local radio situation, and it appears all the attempts to make Sovereign Communications bring back the fired 99.5 YES FM DJs (including Bad Side's Melissa Krahnke and Jason Mapes) have not worked. And now, there's not even Tim Ellis in the mornings, as 99.5 has replaced the old "Soo Morning Crew" with "Kidd Kraddick In The Morning", a nationally syndicated radio show out of California. I really don't agree with YES FM's site calling this "the new Soo Morning Crew in town" when I doubt Kidd Kraddick has ever even been here, but hey, it's all business, they wanna hype this and get people to listen. But Tim and John Gilbert are still on the job, and apparently so is Rock 101's Scott Cook, who's now listed on YES FM'S personalities page! I don't listen to YES FM enough to know how he handles being on this type of station, but he's never sucked before, so he'll do fine! I half expected that Sovereign would use existing DJs to fill in the gaps from the ones they didn't rehire, and looks like I guessed right!
Still, this is a contientous issue for many, especially YES FM lovers and fans of the old "Soo Morning Crew", and the 2,249 members of the "Boycott YES FM" group are still pissed. But now the comments are mostly critical of Kidd Kraddick. I'm a "Scott and Brian" listener in my mornings, so I can't comment on Kidd's show, but even if he's good, people don't like change, and the Soo Morning Crew as we knew it were really good, so I can see why people are mad. I notice that group member Johnny Lewis has been pushing people to e-mail the FCC to file complaints on the supposed local monopoly, and it wouldn't hurt! Click here, look for Johnny's posts, and e-mail away if you want to bring this to the FCC's attention even more! Remember, the sale still isn't final. I know this isn't on the surface a metal story, but considering that it involves members of Bad Side, and now a Rock 101 DJ, it's worth discussing!
Also, just as an aside, if I had to replace Timmy and Lissa and all them with a nationally syndicated show, no way around it, I'd have gotten The Bob & Tom Show, which now has no local outlet with The Bear's demise. It may not fit YES FM's demographics, per say, but it was a very popular show locally, often very funny, and now we can't listen to it on normal FM radio here. Plus, it had listeners who would follow to 99.5 to listen to it, so on that level, it'd make more sense to pick up than a show that has never aired up here before. Just thought that was worth bringing up. I've been contemplating writing an editorial opinion piece on the SMS about the local radio situation for us rock/metal lovers, seeing as we only have two stations that air heavy music now (Rock 101 and WLSO on occasion), so I was thinking about discussing what I'd like to see happen in the future in terms of FM rock radio in Sault Ste. Marie. It may not happen, but it's something that I'd like to discuss!
And finally, if you see a copy of The Soo Profile magazine at a local establishment this month, you'll notice the presence of Woods of Ypres on the cover! Yes, they're the cover story in this month's issue, and you'll notice that the author is....me? Yeah, I've done some freelance work for them, I don't like tooting my own horn, but I've contributed to The Soo Profile a bit in recent months. But don't check it out for my work, do so cause it involves the Sault's own Woods of Ypres, who are the cover feature! It talks about the band's sound, past, and future, it's not a huge article, but it's pretty good! The more local press, the better! Greetings everyone, hope you were all somewhere last night for Algoma Hope4Haiti! As you probably would figure, I was at Nite-Life last night for their portion of the event, so here's my review and what you need to know from there!
Firstly, I should discuss Nite-Life Dance Club, which hosted just it's second metal show last night, so it's not a venue a lot of metalheads have hit since The Other Place was remodeled under new ownership. This was my first time there under any case, and I was impressed by it! Come through the doors and there's an upper level right in front, and the bar's right there on your left! The walls are mostly lined with mirrors, which is interesting decor, though the flash on cameras doesn't mesh well with them. The floor has those cool colour changing lighted strips, however you refer to them! There's lots of tables and chairs and a pool table too! And that thing on the wall with the spinning Budweiser bottle is an eye grabber...yeah, I'm odd. I'm impressed with Nite-Life, they've put a lot of work into this, hopefully it succeeds where The Other Place and GLOW failed! (Oh, and they have a new Facebook page, click here to check it out!)
Opening the night's concert festivities was Out Of The Mouth Of Babes, in their live concert debut! However, you'll recognize 4/5ths of the band from the defunct local hardcore band As It Stands, and as a unit, those 4 have not performed live in over a year! As such, As It Stands comparisons will be inevitable, but this is an entirely new band, they didn't even cover any As It Stands songs last night! New frontman Matt Maccarone (who replaced Josh McNally behind the mic) shown off his very good hardcore singing last night! I hadn't heard from him in a long while, nice to see him in a heavier band than his older more screamo stuff! Also, his stage presence was excellent, he kept everyone moving! Compared to Justin Pregent (As It Stands' singer), I think his screaming is a bit higher pitched, and he seems more at ease with clean vocals, which is cool! Though I still miss Justin, Matt should prove to be a great addition! The rest of the band were solid, Garrett Masters surprised me with his guitar solo, he should play those more often!
The set wasn't without problems though, as Angelo Huckson had some bass issues on two songs: It wasn't plugged in for one, and it came unplugged on another, but for a first show back after over a year, I'm more than forgiving! Even still, the band have really good chemistry, after playing together for so long, you'd expect that! They played mostly new songs (including an instrumental), along with (curiously) a Carrie Underwood cover, but their set ran short for me. I actually feel that they should cover some As It Stands songs, maybe some A Fall From Innocence songs too, it'd both fill in their set more, and draw in fans of both bands to see this new group if they heard old classics like "Bush Raids" and "Angles Of A Casket" were being played! Nice solid hardcore sound, you don't hear it much live anymore, so hopefully they'll be back soon to fill the void! Maybe we'll get an old school all ages show at The Oddfellows Hall? Those don't happen nearly enough. Thumbs up from me, and thanks for flipping me off Angelo, it makes a great picture!
Not long after, Bring The Fallen hit the stage, and they were awesome! This prominent death metal band brought the goods once again! They opened with their cover of All That Remains' "This Calling" before switching to a setlist full of their originals! Josh Stephney's vocals are still as brutal as ever, my throat hurts just watching him growl like that! Andrew Chiarello was awesome on guitar, his solos have always impressed me! Same for Dan Souliere, he was great on guitar and backing vocals, though I do miss his hair! Nolan Rainville has got to be the best on-stage headbanger among local musicians, and his bass work was solid as well, while Travis St. Amour kept up nicely on drums! Josh tried his best to get pits going, but for some reason, a decent sized crowd mostly stayed away from the floor. Are death metal and mosh pits that evil? Who doesn't want to mosh for a good cause?
Again, like with Out Of The Mouth Of Babes, I'd really have liked a longer set from Bring The Fallen, but for what I got, I enjoyed it immensely! Instead, the bands were done around 11:00 PM, with DJ Spruceau hitting the stage last. We all thought he was opening with the bands after, but hey, whatever works for Nite-Life! This has to be the earliest I've been done a local show since Three Days Grace, but for a great cause like Haiti, it was more than worth it! Hopefully both bands will be back real soon, I'll wanna see both live once again! As you can tell, I got photos from the whole concert, click here to check them out, or visit the SMS' Facebook page! So that's what happened at Nite-Life last night! No word has emerged yet concerning how much money was raised, but I sincerely hope it's a nice amount, Haiti needs all the post-earthquake help it can get! FYI, the door prize at Nite-Life last night was dinner for two at Cafe Natura on Elgin Street. I don't know who won, but hopefully the winner enjoys their prize! I'm not sure when we'll get word on what happened at the other venues last night, but I'd expect that soon! As for Friday's Hope4Haiti festivities on Friday, I can tell you a bit about that, as there is an article on SooToday about what happened Friday night! Carol Martin from SooToday discussed the event, including the work Donna Hopper put into this event, and all that the locals did to donate for the cause! I can confirm that the silent art auction at LopLops went on as planned too. There's a photo album with the article too, including live shots of That's Chester & Kathy O'Neill, along with various photos of the fans and musicians that played, including Brian from Gates of Winter, and many more!
As for the ongoing saga of just what would happen at Coch's Corner, here's the timeline: At first, we didn't know who would be playing. Then we heard it'd be Sense of Truth and The Fury. Then Sense of Truth dropped out and were replaced by Caveman Morrison. Then The Fury were announced as not participating, after which Caveman Morrison cancelled. Then Coch's Corner announced it'd be a jam night, and that's what I last heard before the concert. Well, as it turns out, Coch's Corner instead played host to a Tym Morrison acoustic solo set! I bet that would have been fun! I likely would have swung by after Bring The Fallen wrapped up, had I known. The night was still young, after all! I guess I should apologize for missing the announcement of Tym playing there solo, but in all fairness, no one really knew he'd be playing a set until I was already at Nite-Life. Just figured you guys would wanna know. If you were there, I hope you had a great time!
Now I do have more news, but we'll let that be in my next post. All in all, I hope Algoma Hope4Haiti was a huge success, I wanna thank Donna Hopper and The Sault Youth Association immensely for putting all this work and effort in to help the Haitians out in their time of need, their hearts and minds were totally in the right place, and the work they put in should not be forgotten! If I hear anything else coming out of Algoma Hope4Haiti (especially concerning Turner Up or Tym Morrison), I'll have it right here for you guys! Thanks everyone, more news to come!
It's new poll day! But before that, something way more important, as there's a major concert event taking place tomorrow night and Saturday night! So here's everything I know and you need to know about what's going on this weekend! (There IS a metal-related cancellation, but we'll get to that when we come to the Saturday portion.)
As you likely are well aware, a devastating earthquake hit Haiti on January 12th. Thousands have died and many many more are injured or without a home. In response to this, SooToday's Donna Hopper and The Sault Youth Association are teaming up to organize a huge concert event this weekend to raise funds for The Canadian Red Cross to donate to Haiti relief funds. Called "Algoma Hope4Haiti", it's unique as concert events go in that it's not all in one place, like at 2008's Rock 2 Roll skatepark fundraiser at The Canadian Nightclub, for example. This event will be held simultaneously at 8 different local bars (7 of which are downtown) Saturday night, with a handful also holding concerts tomorrow night as well. Two (maybe three) of these venues will be hosting metal/hard rock bands on Saturday, but here's what to expect on Friday! (All my band/venue info comes from the official Facebook event page, unless otherwise stated)

Firstly, at LopLops Lounge, local indie band Kalle Mattson (featuring former Gates of Winter drummer Jimmie Chiverelli) will be playing there tomorrow night with special guest artists Kathy O'Neill and Craig West. If you like indie music, this will be a perfect spot for you to hit! Meanwhile, Foggy Notions will get rocked not by the previously announced DJs, but by these bands: local indie rockers Nebraska Arms (featuring two ex-members of Renderware), and solo artist Brad Example, who you'll likely recognize from Rock of Ages, and most notably, as the bassist for The Inner City Surfers! My source for the updated info at Foggy's is at the official event page, confirm your attendance there! Finally, if I'm not mistaken, local classic rock band That's Chester (featuring Greg Simpson from Stiffler's Mom & Sin Stereo) will be covering your favourite rock hits (and maybe some metal tracks) at The Rockstar Bar that night as well! Just in case you're not sure, tickets for the Saturday shows are good for Friday, so you don't need to buy two tickets. And despite what the poster for Hope4Haiti says, I don't believe The Algonquin Pub has bands on both nights.
Then on Saturday, there's shows at all eight venues, and we'll start first by mentioning a cancellation: I just got word from Sense of Truth drummer Ryan Haryett that they will NOT be playing at Coch's Corner on Saturday. They were scheduled to be playing there that night, but are off due to scheduling conflicts. To the best of my knowledge, The Fury are still playing that night, but a replacement for Sense of Truth hasn't been announced yet. If and when I hear an update on the replacement band, you'll find it here! Well, while we're on the subject of The Fury, you'll likely find them very unique, what with the no guitars and two bassists and all. Very solid band, you'll recognize ex-members of Out Of The Mouth of Babes and DOTH in their lineup! Oh, and remember, if you wanna see Sense of Truth, head to The Canadian on February 26th!
But for the metalhead in us all, one show will deliver all the goods! At Nite-Life Dance & Comedy Club, local death/thrash metal band Bring The Fallen will make their debut at the former Other Place on Saturday night! This will be their first concert since their short notice set at Foggy Notions earlier this month! The winners of 2009's YMCA and Algoma University Battles of the Bands, expect one heavy as hell set from these rising stars of the local scene! Joining them will be Out Of The Mouth Of Babes, the local hardcore band featuring what is essentially the final lineup of As It Stands, if you had Matt Maccarone from A Fall From Innocence singing in place of Justin Pregent! This is their first ever live concert, so I have no idea what to expect. Will we get all new songs, or maybe some AIS classics, or possibly some covers? We'll find out Saturday night after 9:00 PM! Rounding out the lineup is DJ Spruceau, who will mix some stuff on his turntables that night as well! That honestly does seem like a weird clash of genres, but I bet he's very talented! Meanwhile, if you wanna rock out with some great covers of your favourite hard rock songs, you'll wanna be at The Algonquin Pub and Sports Bar Saturday night, when Turner Up rock out for Haiti! Just a week after playing at The Nicolet Tavern for Bon Soo, they'll be downstairs at The Quinn for a nice long set of rock favourites! Sure, you can go see them Wednesdays at Foggy's for jam nights, but why not go see a full 100% concert from these guys? Plus, they're hyping giveaways, and who doesn't love free stuff? They will be on at around 10:30 PM. I wish I could tell you guys more, but I haven't seen them live yet and there's no posted videos of their stuff yet, but by all visible accounts, they have the goods! Confirm your attendance for Turner Up's set at Hope4Haiti at this location!
Now for what's happening at the other 5 venues for Hope4Haiti on Saturday: That's Chester will be back at The Rockstar Bar that night, so they're playing two straight shows! I wonder who'll be louder, That's Chester upstairs or Turner Up downstairs? Confirm your attendance for That's Chester at this location! Also that night, local acoustic indie bands The Pine Cones and Broken House will hit The Bottoms Up Lounge for a night of more intimate music! If that's your thing, or you wanna mellow out, that should be a good bet, click here for the Facebook event page! Meanwhile, back at Foggy Notions, local indie band The Tenagens and punk rockers The Scary Uncles (featuring ex-members of SIGHdEFECT & Fitswitch) will hit the stage to rock out there! That should be a good show as well, especially for The Uncles! Confirm your attendance for that portion at the Facebook event page! The other show downtown will be at LopLops Lounge, when local funk band Big Wheel and The Spokes headline with special guests Shannon Moan and Honeythroat frontman Mark Kuntsi! And finally, local country band Thin Ice (featuring former Garage Inc. bassist Josh Donofrio) will rock out at The Canadian Nightclub, the only participating venue that isn't in the Queen Street East area! None of the acts at the last two venues are genre matches for most SMS stuff, but they all have great audiences and have lots of talent, hopefully their sets are really successful!
So that's the entertainment lineup for Hope4Haiti this weekend! Now, what else do you need to know? Your ticket not only gives $10 to Haiti relief funds, but it will guarantee you entrance to EVERY VENUE at no additional cost! So hypothetically, you could go see Out Of The Mouth of Babes at Nite-Life, then head all the way to The Canadian for Thin Ice, and you wouldn't need to re-pay! Also, your ticket entitles you to free pool at Top Hat Billiards all day on Saturday! To the best of my knowledge, every participating concert venue will be having door prizes and possibly more, so keep an eye out for all that! AND NOW, it's time to discuss the SMS polls! As it is the 18th of the month, we have a new one up, but first, let's go over the results of last month's poll! If you remember correctly, the question I posed to you guys was this: What was your favourite new album release from a Sault Ontario metal band in 2009? A record 73 people voted, thanks everyone! Here are the results, going up from last to first!In dead last with no votes were the two non-studio releases from Woods of Ypres in 2009, the "Allure of the Earth" vinyl and their best-of CD "Independent Nature 2002-2007". Not too surprising, seeing as both weren't full of new material, and "Allure of the Earth" didn't have a widespread CD release. In sixth and seventh respectively were both of Sykotyk Rampage's 2009 albums, "22" (2 votes) and "Moments of Misery" (1 vote.) I don't think that's indicative of their support level (I'm a fan!), but their sound can be a bit polarizing depending on the person, I can see why both albums placed lower. Now here's what puzzles me: "Other" got 6 votes....what'd I miss? Or did some people vote for something from 2008 or earlier, or something non-local or non-metal? I never expected it'd get that high of a total, but hey, people had reasons, and I respect that!
In fourth place with 8 votes was Stillbroke's debut EP, "Never Enough", which doesn't really surprise me. I figured it'd be third or fourth, they are popular, but one could argue they aren't on a Garden of Bedlam-type recognition level yet. No matter, it was a solid EP and some great things are on the horizon! In third with 11 votes, which wasn't where I figured it'd place, was Woods of Ypres' new CD, "Woods IV: The Green Album"! I would have thought this would make first or second place! I know the album can be tough to get into without the right mindset, but it really is brilliantly done! Oh well, hopefully interest picks up in it in 2010! And in second place with 20 votes is the debut self-titled EP from Garden of Bedlam! I thought it'd be in the top two, and look where it was! Great first release, the future is super bright for these guys!
And finally, in first place, with 25 votes, a whopping 34% of the final total, is the new album from Detroit, "Brace For Impact"! I didn't figure this would place first, especially given that it's had the least time to make an impression on us due to it's late release, but I think we have some loyal fans over at The705Scene Forums for helping get the votes up for it! More proof that Detroit have a great following and a positive future, in my opinion! I liked the album myself, congratulations to Detroit on winning! So there's your results for last month's poll, and now it's time to discuss a brand new poll, which I promise is the last in the category of "best something in 2009", but it may be the best one yet! Venue: Coch's CornerDate: December 29thInfo: A night of metal influenced punk and hardcore was the spectacle at Coch's Corner on December 29th, as Detroit celebrated the release of their new CD, "Brace For Impact"! Destroilet made their live debut with a solid set, while Talk Shit kept the 100% punk fans entertained as openers! The show seemed like a big party, with band members guesting on each other's songs and the beer flowed readily! Great sendoff to 2009, what say you about this show?
