Din Updates, Sunrise Records' Local Artist Contest, And A New Concert Video!!

After a slow stretch for news and updates on the SMS over the weekend, we are back with a new news post on this Tuesday morning, and yes, our latest YouTube Channel Profile will follow by tomorrow! Here, we have a new concert video, and details on a new contest that four local bands (and counting?) have jumped in on, but first, here's big updates from a band whose days are numbered, but still have a lot to offer!

Local alternative/hard rock trio The Din have finally posted their live album "The Din Does Laundry" on Bandcamp... well, most of it! With their planned disbanding now under a month away, their sole paid non-studio CD (recorded at The Gore Street Cafe in March 2016 and released the following month) is now finally available for digital download on their Bandcamp page, complete with exclusive cover artwork in this format, so if you missed the limited physical release last year, here's your (partial) second chance! It's on a "name your price" model, but for reference, CDs cost $3 last year. If you're a purist, you will want to track down the original CD, as the Bandcamp version is noticeably pared down, primarily due to the four covers ("Fragile Bird", "The Old Apartment", "Times Like These", and "With A Little Help From My Friends") being removed for obvious legal reasons. That said, it'd be cool to see them posted as Facebook or YouTube exclusives if possible.

Apart from that, there have been more edits to the included songs, most notably the merger of the short introduction tracks "Spin Cycle" & "Leamington, Ontario" into the full songs "A Drive Through The Peninsula" & "75" that followed them, while virtually every remaining song has had minor edits to the start and finish (largely to remove dead air.) Finally, two songs were re-titled, with the closing track now using it's shortened title "Potato", while "We Met As Surrogates" (promoted from unlisted bonus status) now has it's alternate title "We Met At The Circus". So, a 16 track, 64 minute CD was chopped down to a 10 track, 45 minute digital album, but if you didn't/can't get the original copy, this is better than nothing, and a nice surprise as The Din wind down their active run, so stream or download it at the above links! In one more solely-Din related note, they recorded a new "cover of the month"-style video, albeit exclusively for their Facebook page on Friday, and it's their version of Matchbox Twenty's "3 AM".

Featuring multiple camera angles of The Din in their jam session locale of similar older clips, this is a solid cover, as fans will have come to expect, but it's not an overly up-tempo or heavy choice of cover. Still, with studio quality audio from Pretoria Hill Productions, this is another nice bonus in The Din's final weeks, so give it a watch below, and don't miss them at The Canadian THIS FRIDAY NIGHT in their third-to-last live concert!

Next up, a few local bands have thrown their hat into the ring for Sunrise Records' Local Artist Contest, where one lucky Canadian band will win nationwide distribution of their CD at the music store chain! The grand prize winning band will also receive 500 copies of said album on CD & vinyl, the album as a personalized plaque, a feature on Sunrise Records' website, plus "social & newsletter support", while a runner-up band will get 500 copies of their album on CD, distribution at regional Sunrise stores, and "social support". As best as I can tell, four local bands (The Din, punk/metal quintet Jack Spades, indie rock quartet K.I.C.K., and prog rock quintet Machines Dream) have signed up so far, with Jack Spades leading the way locally in 14th place for total votes, but all four bands could use your support, especially Machines Dream, who are distantly trailing at press time. Your band can get in on the contest too, by signing up at this link, and you can also vote there as well, where you can vote for multiple bands, albeit only once a day for each (a free registration is required.)

Beyond that, voting ends on Halloween, when the ten highest voted bands will enter the "judgement round", where Sunrise representatives will determine the winners, to be announced on November 10th. This sounds like a cool contest that's already attracting lots of local interest, and with a chance to vote for as many bands as you want once each daily, you can help get all four local bands and potential further sign-ups to move up the ranks! Best of luck, and click the above links or visit the appropriate Facebook links for further details on the contest! Remember, Sunrise replaced HMV at the Station Mall earlier this year, so stop in to support our newest record store!

Finally for today, here's a new Facebook video of Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Project 906, as shared from guitarist Joe Jenkins' personal Facebook page to the band's own Facebook page yesterday! A nearly-complete cover of Queen's "Fat Bottomed Girls", this was filmed at The Strongs Tavern in Eckerman on Saturday night, marking a rarity in both locale and length for their publically available videos. The video's visuals aren't entirely clear (the constantly changing lighting doesn't help), but it's a fine rendition of this Queen classic on a stationary camera, so check it out below, and stay tuned for more on their upcoming dates!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for this month's YouTube Channel Profile next, with more news and notes to follow! Thanks everyone!

The Din - "The Din Does Laundry" CD Review!!

To end the month, here's our 96th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, as we're looking at local alternative hard rock trio The Din's debut paid release "The Din Does Laundry"! With no public timeframe for the release of their second official studio album, and The Din having played live thrice in June 2017, now's a perfect time to look at their initial live CD, barring their old Mike Haggith & The Din free albums from their acid jam beginnings. Recorded on March 4th, 2016 at The Gore Street Cafe during their acoustic Fishbowl Festival set at the laundromat (hence the album name), the CD was released on April 2nd of last year during their set at the Rednecks Saloon's relaunch party, and features their current lineup, including singer/bassist Mike Haggith, guitarist Tammy Hill, and drummer Brandan Glew on the drums & cajon, given the unplugged setting. Copies of "The Din Does Laundry" ran for $3 last year, and may still be available at shows or on personal request.

Unfortunately, given the inclusion of four covers of outside artists, the album is not available in full online to purchase, but I will link song names to online copies where available to the songs performed, in concert or otherwise. Also, with 3/5ths of the album comprised of songs available in full studio form via The Din's studio album "Give In To The Din" or earlier Mike Haggith solo albums, comparisons to the older recordings are inevitable, especially given the unplugged nature of them, though the covers and two exclusive tracks are completely open. Featuring 15 tracks and 1 bonus song clocking in at around 64 minutes, let's begin our review!

This CD (and concert) starts with "Analog Palace", a cover of Mike's solo song from his 2009 album "I Hate My Life & I Want To Die", and one of the few songs from The Din's acid jam era to return in modern sets. The original version was already a melancholy softer number, so it fits just fine with The Din in this setting, but this cover is noticeably more upbeat, particularly thanks to Mike projecting his voice more and showing his improved singing. Overall, this live version is better recorded and sounds tighter than the original, including solid guitar picking from Tammy, but keep in mind that Mike was 7 years older and more experienced during this concert, so improvement could be expected. Also, keep in mind that full banter between songs is included on the CD, which could be a plus or minus depending on the listener, but it does maintain the live concert feel here! However, the album-long 6 minute run-time for this track is deceiving, as the last minute is just banter.

Second is "Of Cars & Criminals" (or "Of Cars & Coin Machines", as Brandan jokingly named it on their setlist), which is a cover of a song from Mike's final solo CD, 2015's "The Warinside". Much like their fully electric versions of the song, this is much shorter and sans the original's symphonic elements, but it's otherwise similar to the first copy. Brandon gets a good beat out of his cajon on this one, Tammy's solo sounds good for acoustic, and Mike's voice really soars on this catchy number that hopefully makes the cut for their second studio album! That's followed by the first cover of an outside band, which was "Fragile Bird" by acoustic folk notables City & Colour, which was actually making it's live debut in a Din set that night. I'm not a huge City & Colour fan, but the smooth and laid back style is a great fit for the acoustic setting, and it will be a familiar selection for Din fans who saw them live last year, and Brandan (I assume) handles tambourine duties well also!

The fourth song is "Out Of My League", which actually starts at the end of the prior track. Another carry-over from "The Warinside", and the CD's first song to be re-recorded on the "Give in to The Din" studio album that summer, this is very similar structurally to their later studio version compared to the symphonic-infused original, this is one of my favourite Din songs, but it doesn't translate as well to an unplugged environment, with Mike's voice sounding a little scratchy, and the heavier instrumentation is missed compared to the more free-wheeling studio copy. Not a bad rendition, but unless you demand acoustic, The Din have better out there. Next is one of only two completely original Din tracks on the set, "In Search of the Perfect Moment", and while this is another song that sounds slightly forced to fit the acoustic setting, it's a better fit, and the chorus singing is actually an improvement on the later studio version. Tammy gets another solid guitar solo, and Brandan beats the cajon with solid rhythm as well, so fans should be happy with this one at this early stage of the CD!

Sixth on "The Din Does Laundry" is a bonus track (yes, at this point of the CD), namely a cover of "We Met As Surrogates", also known as "We Met At The Circus", which is also taken from Mike's "Warinside" album. Massively simplified compared to the original, complete with a lack of meandering intro or beeping phone at the end, the song is a good fit into The Din's sets, no matter where they met or who they met as! Brandan gets some moments to unload on the cajon, and Mike has a nice melody to his singing on the choruses, and though the song is noticeably slower paced than the original, remember that this was an acoustic show. Next is the advertised sixth song on the album, namely a cover of The Barenaked Ladies' "The Old Apartment", which is a nice fit into Din sets, and that is the same here, though I think drumming would be a better fit than the tambourine on this version. Mike even hits a bit of a falsetto note on this one, and he and Tammy play off of each other well, so fans of the original or The Din's plugged in covers should be right at home!

After some brief subliminal advertising for their then-upcoming set at last year's VM Radio Battle of the Bands, The Din played their original song "Flux" next, and while I find it's a far better fit plugged-in given it's heavier edge, the guys adapt it well to an acoustic setting, and Brandan even has an extended "drum-off" with Mike mid-song, so if you ever wanted to hear that in this atmosphere, here you go! Before that, the song went fine and had a good melody, and it ended strongly too, so fans should enjoy this rendition! The next song is "Spin Cycle", which isn't really a song at all, The Din just titled the 49 seconds of banter before the next track separately for one reason or another, and they don't reference it's title (a presumed allusion to the laundromat) at all either. Why not combine this with the song proper and give "We Met As Surrogates" a proper credit?

The actual next song is "A Drive Through The Peninsula", yet another selection taken from "The Warinside" before making The Din's studio CD,  and honestly, this fits the best so far of any song that had a prior or later studio version by a Mike Haggith project! The song was already a slower mid-tempo number, so it adapts nicely to the unplugged setting, and Mike's singing is clear as crystal! The mid-song instrumental bridge is a little too quiet for my liking, and the instrumental jam at song's end wasn't implemented yet, but it's a solid and effective acoustic rendition that fans of the original will like! Another cover is next, namely The Foo Fighters' "Times Like These" (well, "Tiimes Like These", if you believe Brandan's setlist), and I think they tuned down the song a little too much for the setting here, with Mike's lower register singing not really necessary, as the original song is melodic enough that he could have sung it normally like in their regular shows and got away with it. Other than that, the guys sound good, and Brandan's backing vocals add an extra element too!

Song #12 is another song borrowed from Mike's solo career, namely "Cowardly Hearts Beneath The Stars" from his 2014 EP "A Place Of Our Own". Much like many other solo carryovers in this set, The Din stripped out the orchestral elements for a basic acoustic rock sound (granted, you almost have to here), and as a result, this more has a folk/modern rock hybrid sound, if that makes any sense. The drawn out guitar plucking is handled better electrically, but the song's soft enough to fit in this format, but keep in mind that it feels like a different song somewhat moreso than the others. After announcing plans to hold a contest post-set for Battle of the Bands tickets, the next song of sorts is "Leamington, Ontario", which is simply the spoken word intro that Mike frequently gives to precede the next song in concerts to set up it's inspiration. I've never thought it stood alone as it's own credited song, and would be better served as the first chunk of the next track, but that's just me.

As longtime Din fans will know, the next song is "75", a song borrowed from Mike's old band Haggith's 2013 album "Deuce" (which Mike left the drumkit to sing lead for back then too), but it loses something in acoustic form. The original heavy & freewheeling number is always a highlight of Din shows, and Haggith before them, but in a minimalist acoustic form, it feels like a by the numbers rendition without the life and swagger we're used to. It's not badly done, but this isn't a great fit for an unplugged concert.

The penultimate song on "The Din Does Laundry" is a cover of The Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends", and this is a faithful cover that sounds like the original playing to The Din's strengths, and can you ask for any more? Mike could have harmonized more on the final singing of "friends", and this song in particular sounded a little empty without electric guitars, but Beatles fans should appreciate the cover! The album closes with what was then called "This Potato May Be Used As A Flotation Device", another carry-over from Mike's "A Place Of Our Own", though it was renamed "Potato (Should've Known Better)" for the "Give in to The Din" CD. Much like on "75", this song does lose it's fun hard rocking nature in an acoustic setting, and feels more like it was played that night because fans expected to hear it. Good rendition, as everything is on the CD, but many of the earlier songs were better fits for an unplugged set.

So, what are my final thoughts on The Din's debut paid live CD? Overall, it's a fun look at The Din in a more reserved setting with a lot of exclusive tracks, and if you like their softer material, you'll enjoy this a great deal! One big plus to buying this album may be the fact that 8 of the 14 actual songs (4 Mike Haggith solo songs and 4 outside covers) are otherwise not yet available on CD from the modern day Din, and in the latter case, likely never will be, so this is worth tracking down for extra songs in nice recording quality! Mike's singing and bass work are just fine throughout the album, with Tammy Hill adapting effectively to the acoustic setting on guitar, and Brandan drumming as well on a cajon as you'd hope, but fans who prefer and/or only listen to electric guitar-driven rock may be disappointed by this album (remember, this was recorded at The Gore Street Cafe.) Also, only 2 of the album's songs are complete original tracks that debuted with The Din, but remember that this predated their first studio album.

That all said, this gives fans a complete window into their Fishbowl Festival set last year, which wasn't publically filmed for social media, and isn't visibly edited in any substantial fashion, and while heavier songs aren't clean fits to the unplugged style, songs like "Of Cars & Criminals" & "In Search of the Perfect Moment" showcase The Din at their best in this format! If you can find or request a copy, definitely consider it so you too can give in to The (unplugged) Din! I hope you guys liked this month's CD review, but what's coming next in July 2017? I can't 100% confirm anything at this juncture, but here's some hints. In terms of who isn't next, don't expect the AlgomA/Shit Liver split cassette or a SweetKenny album next due to our 6 month anti-bias buffer, but if it's released quickly, the former could be reviewed as soon as August 1st! A new metal, hard rock, or punk album will of course take precedence if it's released, so stay tuned for our next "Where Are The New Albums?" post on Sunday for hints therein on what may be coming out.

If we must dip into the archives for a review, possibilities include A Fall From Innocence's self-titled CD, The Bear Hunters' "Collapse The Sun" single, Haggith's "Apocalypse II" or an archive Mike Haggith solo album (technically, these are separate from The Din), The Rising Tide's second CD, and Integrated System of Machines' self-titled CD, as members of each band are playing live next month, but nothing is final yet. Stay tuned for updates on that front, and for more news and notes in the month of July, with our 10th anniversary fast approaching also! Thanks everyone!

The Din & Theatre Of Night Updates, Plus Lots Of Assorted News & Notes!!

Before we get our review of Saturday night's Rednecks Saloon relaunch party goes up on the site, here's a new news post to keep things rolling on that end for this new week! Today, we have lots of assorted recent notes, but first, here's some updates and new videos from bands on each side of the border!

Local hard rock/alternative trio The Din have stayed busy in the past week, so what should you know from them? Well, the band released their first paid CD at the aforementioned Rednecks concert on Saturday, as "The Din Does Laundry" finally went on sale! Though sold in a paper sleeve, it actually has a proper label & cover art insert, so it would actually be eligible for a review on the site (and it all fits just fine in a jewel case!) The 15 song disc was on sale for $3, and by post-show accounts, it was a good seller, so keep it in mind for when The Din play live next! As for a review of it on the SMS, I want to hold off in lieu of The Din's previously hinted official studio debut CD, which has been teased a fair amount in the past few days. On Friday, the band shared a teaser video where frontman Mike Haggith teased plans to release the cover art and title, while riding an exercise bike, on their Facebook page, but in a video four hours later, Mike & guitarist Tammy Hill revealed that this was an April Fools joke of sorts.

The cover art, title, and first single are apparently coming later this month, but the reveal (fittingly in front of laundry machines) was actually for "The Din Does Laundry", despite it already being revealed in older photos. Hey, they technically weren't lying! No word on if it'll be available online in some form, but check out the teasers above and below, stay tuned for The Din's next Cover of the Month video in short order, and stay tuned for our review of their Rednecks set in our next post!

Next up, here's a new video from Sault Michigan classical metal project Theatre of Night, as uploaded to their YouTube channel yesterday, and it's of a new instrumental track named "Fraxical Dream" that guitarist Steve Giles composed using effects programs on his iPad (which he has made good use of for many prior tracks.) Complete with many psychedelic images, the song has a dark, ethereal essence, albeit not heavy, but fans should check it out below, and hopefully we hear more from Theatre of Night in short order!

Finally for this post, here's six assorted shorter news items from the last while! As usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

  • In their latest Facebook page update on March 21st, local death metal quintet The Bear Hunters revealed that bass recording sessions for their upcoming second CD "The Dead Testament" were ongoing at Mission Control Studios, and that sessions were still on track for a release this year. Sounds like things are on track, so keep posted as more comes in!
  • Are/were defunct local hard rock band Borderline Divine planning a comeback? The former Stillbroke posted a cryptic status saying "Download is complete. Installation is ready to begin." on their Facebook page in October, their first status there since the band went on hiatus in mid-2012, with frontman Jesse Frigault moving to Alberta later that year (he's no longer a listed band member on their page either.) Given that there hasn't been any follow-up since, we'll have to wait and see if Borderline Divine do indeed re-emerge, but it'd be cool to see Sam, Mitch, and Justin on stage again!
  • We don't often have news items from Twitter on here, but Redundant frontman Justin Langlois revealed on his Twitter page on Thursday that the local punk trio has "a couple of out of town gigs booked." The band hasn't elaborated on this yet, or when they'll return to the local stage, but we'll let you know when we hear more!
  • According to a Rolling Stone article for the 40th anniversary of their classic album "2112" last week, Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson revealed that the Canadian prog-hard rock legends wrote the riff for their song "Temples of Syrinx" during their June 1975 stop in Sault Ste. Marie when they played at the former Sault Memorial Gardens! SooToday's Kenneth Armstrong followed with their own article about the reveal, with reminiscences from Rad Zone owner Paul Muncaster on Rush's three local shows from 1975-1977, and Rush's impact even at that early stage. Both are well worth the read for Rush fans, so give each a look above!
  • Local hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven have quietly posted four photos on their Facebook page since February which seem to indicate the titles of (at least) four songs for their upcoming debut EP. If I'm reading these right, the tracks will be "Cognitive Dissonance", "Fallen Faith", "Enough", and "Pretend", complete with quotes relating to each title, though it's not established if "Fallen Faith" & "Enough" are re-recordings of their earlier studio tracks or not. Stay tuned for more from Skeyes of Seven!
  • The Tuned with Donna Hopper episode on last month's VM Radio Battle of the Bands finally went online on Local2 yesterday, where Donna interviewed winners K.I.C.K. on their victory last month, how new bassist Kevin D'Orazio has fit in, and their songwriting process & recording plans. Sadly, there's no footage of the other finalists (or from any of the semifinals), but it's a solid (if brief) interview, and there's some live footage from their set during the credits! Give it a look at the above links!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for our review of Saturday night's Rednecks Saloon relaunch party next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Nudge), More Weekend Concert Previews, And The Din's Latest Updates!!

Happy April Fools Day, everyone! I give my 100% pledge that there's no pranks or fake stories ahead (partly to be kind, partly as I have no good ideas for a prank), so prepare for the rest of this weekend's known hard rock concert previews, SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for Sault Michigan, a new concert video, and some updates from a rising young Sault Ontario band! Here's what you should know!

Marquette, Michigan cover hard rock favourites Nudge will make their way to The Satisfied Frog in Sault Michigan for the first time this year TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, we only heard about this show last night, though Nudge had advertised it on the official Facebook event page for longer than a week. After a nearly 6 month break from playing in the E.U.P., fans should welcome Danzo McCracken and company back with open arms this weekend, and with their entertaining blend of hard rock covers in full force, don't miss out TONIGHT and/or TOMORROW! Yes, these shows did again follow Danzo's requisite acousticWendesday-Thursday nighters as well, hopefully those were hits! 10:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 21+ age limits are in effect for this weekend, so see above for more details, and for a preview, here's Nudge live!

Moving to previously announced concerts, let's stay in Sault Michigan with the next gigs from newer local blues/hard rock quartet Project 906, who will make their Soo debut (and 2nd-3rd live concert appearances) when they rock Dondee Lanes TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! With the Ten Kings successors' St. Patrick's Day launch in Brimley now under their belts, this talented new band will head to the Dondee for their first full weekend engagement, and they should have a fun weekend of hard and blues rock covers in store for fans! Early start times of 8:00 PM are in effect for this weekend's shows, you must be 21 or older to attend, and there's no announced cover charges. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and for a preview, here's a new video from Project 906's debut concert! Uploaded to the band's Facebook page on March 21st, this is a short video of the end of their cover of Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", with leprechaun hats in tow.

You don't get a fantastic look at Project 421 here, with only the "Hey! Hey Hey!" chants featured for vocals, but Joe Jenkins does end things with a solid lick, and the filming quality is decent! Hopefully more comes out from Project 906 soon, don't miss them at The Dondee this weekend, and here's the end of their Van Halen cover!

Finally for known local hard rock concert previews this weekend, Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will continue his Gliss Steak & Seafood arrangement with solo acoustic shows TONIGHT & TOMORROW! As Tym's run at the downtown restaurant marches on, look for some fun classics in an unplugged format once again, and if you know Tym's prolific nature, these should again deliver the goods over the next two evenings! Of course, remember that the Caveman Morrison band will end a 2+ year hiatus TOMORROW during the Rednecks Saloon relaunch party, so keep that show in mind as well if you've missed Tym's full live band in the mid-2010s! Of course, their return (presuming it continue past tomorrow night) shouldn't affect his Gliss dates, as those are matinees. Tym's Gliss shows this weekend are 6:00 PM affairs with no announced cover charges or age limits, but remember, this is a sit-down restaurant. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's Tym live at the former Bossy's!

We'll close today's post with the latest from local alternative/hard rock trio The Din, who will join Caveman Morrison and five other acts at the aforementioned Rednecks relaunch concert TOMORROW! Since their runner-up performance in last week's VM Radio Battle of the Bands, this rising local band have announced via their Facebook page that they're in studio and "making more and more progress" on their debut album, though it's not yet clear if recording sessions have firmly begun for it. This seemingly confirms that their old jam-era free postings like "Dinner With the President" (which they termed as "albums") are not considered as such anymore. Presumably, the band's planned CD release of their acoustic Fishbowl Festival set at The Gore Street Cafe is separate, as The Din also teased that on Facebook last week, to be put out under the name "The Din Does Laundry".

The full set includes 15 songs, including 4 covers and some unfamiliar songs like "Spin Cycle" & "Leamington, Ontario". No word on how this live disc will be released, but stay tuned for updates on it! The Din have also launched an Instagram page to check out, with more content to follow there, but we'll end things with The Din's newest Facebook video, posted on Monday to promote tomorrow's Rednecks set. It features Mike, Tammy, and Brendan discussing the show, their lack of an on-stage banner for it, and how Tammy bought an old tube television for that purpose, which they fruitlessly try to use like a smart TV. Cute promotion, so give it a look below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post tomorrow! Thanks everyone!
