Awokest - "Solving The Human Condition" Album Review!!

It's now time for our 121st monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, and after a three month detour into the local music archives, we're looking at a new release for the first time since March, and in a mild surprise, that album is local experimental/death metal solo project Awokest's debut paid studio album "Solving The Human Condition"! Quietly & independently released to their Bandcamp page on April 19th in conjunction with a better publicized free YouTube copy, this is the paid follow-up to January's compilation album "Enter the Nightlands", though this album appears to exclusively contain new recordings. Awokest is represented here by solo artist Chase "Dick Jerkins" Wigmore, and if there are other collaborators as have been teased in prior Awokest descriptions, they are not credited. Unlike it's predecessor, "Solving The Human Condition" is on sale on a "name your price" model, and while this means you can buy it for free, consider paying something to support Chase's work!

Song names below are linked to their Bandcamp copies, and I believe there have been references towards a physical CD pressing of this album too, so contact Chase or see him/Awokest in concert for details in that regard. With 12 songs running for 54 minutes, let's kick off our second Awokest CD review at the SMS! The album starts off with "Real Fucking Thoughts" (he titled it, not me!), which is hard to describe, but it's more or less an extended sample-laden intro that gradually gets more and more sinister before devolving into an electronic music stretch after about 2:30, before closing with a minute of eerily cheerful music set to what sounds like someone being beat up, plus commercial samples (I recognized an old Concerned Children's Advertisers PSA.) Metalheads will like Chase's background screaming after his ominous thoughts. This track works as a stream of consciousness opener, and it's very creative, but if you're looking for true metal, I guarantee you that's ahead.

Second is the song "Machine God of Hate", and this fully brings things into Awokest's extreme metal wheelhouse! This is an intense jackhammer of a song that owes a lot to black metal in it's grand nature and Chase's high shrieking vocals, though it still finds room for some electronic flourishes, like the beeping before the verses. Goodness knows, I don't know what the lyrics are, but he sure sells them! This song is a pure wall of noise, but it's well performed, brutally heavy, and would incite a mosh pit at any concert it'd be played at, so metalheads will want to take notice! That's followed by "And Then The Reign Came Down" (sic), which opens with an ominous, almost "You Can't Bring Me Down"-esque intro before chugging into a more reserved, atmospheric instrumental, with Chase's harsh vocals sounding more processed as a result. I wish this song was clearer and more in-your-face, as there is something here, but aside from the pair of drum-led breakdowns, it feels like it's being held back by the post-production.

Track #4 is "She Crawls Towards It", which feels more like a demo than it's predecessor tracks, with the song proper almost sounding like it was recorded on cassette tape, if that makes any sense. I like the melodic riff contrasting with the grimy, processed rhythm section, and the female backing vocals (is she the crawler?) are a nice touch, but Chase's vocals sound very muffled and are sometimes inaudible. Elements of this song work, and I wish it had a cleaner recording, but it gets the job done for electronic-tinged black metal if you can look past that! Next is the album's title track "Solving The Human Condition", which runs for an album-long 7+ minutes. Starting with sampled audio from an interview with serial killer Edmund Kemper, this song has a chaotic wall of noise appeal, and it has more of a groove to it than predecessor tracks, but vocals don't kick in until almost 3 minutes in. These are cleaner vocals, so if you like hearing the words, here you go!

I don't know that this song really needs to be 7 minutes long, as it doesn't really vary off of it's initial trajectory (maybe a solo would help), but the music is top notch, and Chase's drum tracks are fast and brutal to go along with everything! If you liked "Machine God of Hate", this will be an epic, if overly long follow-up! Then we have the under 2 minutes-long "Getting Away With Murder", which is not related to the Papa Roach song beyond the name. The album's first song with no vocals of any kind, this is a steady interlude with solid guitar plucking and restraint. I got a The Killers vibe at first, but the song never switched gears, if that makes any sense, and the progression gave the song an uneasy ambiance that definitely felt intentional. Hard to describe, it works for it's length, but it feels like an unfinished intro.

Seventh up is another longer track, "Rites of the Wendigo", whose name references a man-eating creature in Algonquian folklore. This has a catchy drum rhythm that never seems to let up (this is a good thing), but the vocals are very muddled into the music, and it's nigh impossible to make out any of the lyrics. This song has an intense folk metal quality before the breakdown around the 3:30 mark, but it eventually gets back into that groove sans more intense, evil screaming from Chase near the end. Like on the title track, I don't think this song needed to be as long as it is, as it just pounds and chugs along with not enough variance for my liking, but it works well otherwise! Then, we have "Behold Here Is A Man", which is only barely a song, as it appears to be an audio depiction of a murder and it's aftermath (even ending with a scream), with only light backing instrumentation and hushed spoken word vocals overtop reflecting the title. The dark nature of this track is hard to ignore, but if you want a proper "song", this ain't it.

Next is "Hunter By Blood", which brings back the assaulting extreme metal of prior tracks at full force, after an intro suggesting a physical assault. Like on earlier full-force songs, this has a chaotic black metal vibe, but the liberal usage of sampled sound effects can get in the road of the instrumentaton. Chase's shrieking is amped up and brutally intense as usual, and we get a rare guitar solo here too, albeit during a stretch with vocals. I like the guitar work and the strong bass, and the track hits you like a truck, but the ending with police sirens does come out of nowhere to a point. If you like metal, this is a massive highlight! Afterwards is the album's shortest track, the 95 seconds long "A Whole Lifetime Of Disappointment", which isn't a song at all, it's actually a spoken word rant from the viewpoint of a murderer who wishes millennials would put up more of a "challenge", and I'll leave it at that. This almost feels like a very blue stand-up routine, so take that for what you will.

The penultimate song on "Solving the Human Condition" is "Mark My Words", which opens with about 2 minutes of ominous background noise before fully kicking into an intense extreme metal attack like on "Hunter By Blood" and it's predecessors. This has more of a chaotic, experimental quality without subscribing to usual musical structure, and while I think there is some vocal work, it's heavily processed and nigh undecipherable. If you like a crushing wall of noise in your metal, this will do it, but I'd have liked some vocal input at least, and it's not something you're gonna be humming after. The album closes with "Feelin' Fine", which is a total 180° turn in sound from it's predecessor, almost like the storyline of songs' past has led to this as a coda or epilogue. It's a pleasant, cheerful instrumental with some synth input and psychedelic effects, and it's well performed, but it's such a jarring shift that you almost have to hear the whole album beforehand to appreciate it. Interesting closer, if nothing else!

So, what are my final thoughts on Awokest's first paid studio album? Even if Chase calls this a demo, it's a fully fleshed out demo that will appeal to fans of his heavier and more aggressive music! Though lyrics were not posted online, this does feel like a concept album about a murderer, so when you do hear discernible words, be prepared. If you can handle horror movie-esque lyrics, the album largely delivers the goods, especially if you like noise and black metal, with songs like "Machine God of Hate", "Mark My Words", and the title track delivering a crushing attack that doesn't want to let up! Chase puts his multi-instrumental talents to solid use, and he's never sounded more evil, but the album is uneven as it progresses through the story. The longest songs don't have to be that long, the shorter interludes don't stand on their own very well, and for such a talented guitarist as Chase is, I'm shocked we didn't get more guitar solos. The mix on some songs could have been improved too, as vocals could be very muddled on certain songs.

If you were disappointed that "Enter the Nightlands" was largely a compilation, and you wanted more of Awokest's newer brutal originals, "Solving the Human Condition" will make up for that, and hopefully Chase builds on this well when he finishes "Anima Sola", whether we ever hear it or not! Give this album a listen and/or buy it above, and I hope you guys liked this month's CD review! As for next month, I'm currently leaning towards Black Cloud's debut album "Abstract Sounds", which came out earlier this month, but could there be a surprise contender? That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

Long Shot Concert Preview, Upcoming Album Updates, And Much More!!

I wasn't expecting to have a second post today, but I just remembered that we missed a concert TONIGHT when we did our concert preview post on Thursday, so I put this one together to give it some proper attention and address some other recent notes, including a new concert video share, upcoming album updates, and the latest from AlgomA, so here's what you need to know!

We accidentally missed a show in Thursday's weekend concert preview post, so let's get the preview up now before the show takes place, as newer local hard rock quartet Long Shot's previously announced show at the Fraternal Order of Eagles' clubhouse in nearby Heyden goes down TONIGHT! Apologies again for this being later than expected, but at least it wasn't a short notice event. The official poster indicates that they're "back by popular demand", so they had a successful set here earlier in the year, and while the Eagles club may seem like an odd venue for a concert, remember that Long Shot's gigs haven't been in the typical locations that you'd see other cover bands at (plus, Tym Morrison once had a regular arrangement there.) Everything starts at 7:00 PM tonight, but supper will be available beforehand, where you can enjoy quesadillas and nachos supreme, as indicated on the official poster. Note however that there hasn't been an age limit or cover announcement.

For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! This should be an entertaining show, if Long Shot's videos are any indication, so don't miss their first show of the fall TONIGHT if you can help it, and for a preview, here's 3/4ths of Long Shot (and guests) covering Blue Oyster Cult at a recent outdoor event!

Next up, here's the latest album updates from two of local musician Mitch Sirie's active bands! Concerning his death metal group The Bear Hunters, their Facebook page revealed yesterday that the mixing for their debut CD "Eternal Hibernation" is complete, with today being spent adjusting vocal volume, and mastering taking place tomorrow. Physical copies will be pressed over the next three weeks, along with orders for new t-shirts, toques, and hoodies, and you can contact the band if you want a specific shirt size. The post closed by saying that the band plans to release their "Aftermath" EP of unreleased older songs and their second studio album in 2015, which sounds ambitious, but hopefully things pan out better than the recording process for the first disc! Also, Mitch's hard rock quartet Beaumont Avenue revealed on their Facebook page yesterday that they're planning to record 2 EPs (with 4 originals each, grouped by how they feel) and then write a proper debut album from scratch when drummer Ben Boudreau returns home.

No word yet on if these will involve the original recording sessions that the then-Suicide Kings held at The Smoke & Oak Room Studio last year will be used or remixed for these plans or not, or if they'll completely start over on everything. Sounds like Mitch's bands are on a good path, and hopefully things don't get derailed further on the way! Don't miss the Bear Hunters' EP release show on October 18th!

Also today, here's the latest from local doom metal trio AlgomA! The band (along with drummer Jamie Vincent's grungecore duo Bad Back) will join local rap/metal duo The Apocalypse Afterparty and Toronto garage rockers Ghost Daze for a Toronto concert dubbed "The Northern Horde" on Thursday, October 16th! This will mark all of the local bands' Southern Ontario debuts, and it's great to see them expanding their reach, especially given that this will be AlgomA's first announced show following their CD release! Speaking of which, the first advance review of their debut album "Reclaimed By The Forest" is now online via the German metal website Doom Metal Front, where reviewer Sven Mihlan called it ''mesmerizing" and "relentless in its expression", positively comparing them to Electric Wizard, Eyehategod, and Sleep. Solid, if short review, and it's nice to see them getting some attention overseas before it comes out! Stay tuned for more from the AlgomA camp!

Finally for today, here's a metal concert video from the spring that was only just publically shared on Facebook 6 months after the fact! This comes from Winnipeg deathcore quintet Commencing Human Desperation's headlining set at a short notice Heavy North Entertainment concert at The Oddfellows Hall concert in March, as filmed by promjoter Tyler St. Amour and uploaded to Facebook on his personal page at the time, but now it has the all clear! The lighting is dark, and the audio's a bit warped, but C.H.D. have solid aggression and brutality on this clip of their original "Devil's Throne", so give it a look below for some spring-time all ages metal intensity!

That's definitely all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Commencing Human Desperation & Griphook) And The First Of This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

It might not feel like the first day of spring, but let's keep things rolling at The Sault Metal Scene with most of this weekend's metal/hard rock concert previews! Now, due to the amount, we'll be previewing Saturday-only shows (namely, Medifest and Tym Morrison's postponed Harp gig) tomorrow, along with any extremely short notice events, so look out for those then! We'll start these previews with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for this weekend, so here's what you need to know! (Updated on Friday at 1:48 AM)

The long rumoured Heavy North Entertainment-promoted ALL AGES show that has been teased for this month at The Oddfellows Hall goes down TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the event was only just confirmed yesterday. The concert will be headlined by Winnipeg deathcore quintet Commencing Human Desperation in their local debut, and fans of hardcore & death metal music should enjoy their very heavy and intense hybrid sound tomorrow night! Local openers include local thrashers Pillory, Blood Shed Productions death metal projects Rotopsy and Brutaly Fatal while, a band labelled as "Them" dropped out due to the show's short notice, and they'll be replaced by sets from fellow Blood Shed grind act Crucify The Whore and a dual set by Strange Coyotes bassist James Watterworth (credited as "Delusionair") and someone named "Spider Fingers" (possibly Chase Wigmore?) The concert will be opened by the local return of acoustic indie trio Like Father Like Son (featuring former local metal artists Jeremy Hannah and Nathan Bouliane), who have moved to Ottawa and worked on material there since their last local dates in 2012, and while they're definitely outliers on the bill, it'll be nice to see them back home!

This concert has an $8 cover charge, no age limits, and a 6:30 PM start time, so for more details, visit the official Facebook event page! The short notice is somewhat worrying for the attendance and potential success of this show, but Tyler St. Amour sounds very happy to bring C.H.D. to town for this one! Yes, I believe this is the show Crimson Crusade turned down a slot on due to their hiatus. Stay tuned in case there's a late lineup change (or if we find out who "Them" are), and here's Commencing Human Desperation live last year!

Also in late announcements, local hard rock cover quartet Griphook will return to The Roosevelt Hotel for shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, the band only confirmed these shows on Tuesday. After almost two months off earlier this year, these shows fall over the third out of four weekends that Griphook will be playing live in town, so it's definitely nice to see their new lineup staying busier as we enter the supposed spring! Just to get it out of the way now, I have heard a rumour about The Rosie getting new ownership, but unless there is an actual confirmation of that, we won't comment on it, as we're not TMZ. Griphook will be on both nights at The Rosie at 10:30 PM, you must be 19 to attend, and there's no cover charge. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Griphook's wide ranging and often heavy covers should go over well this weekend, so keep their next shows in mind, and for a preview, here's Griphook covering AC/DC last year!

Moving to previously announced shows, fellow local cover quartet Glitch will make their first appearance at The Harp Bar & Grill TOMORROW NIGHT! A rare non-Rockstar Bar appearance for them, this will be just their second show at a different venue (following Toystock in December), and their first show anywhere since January, and it will be very interesting to see how things go at the former Madison's Pub tomorrow! Since the name and theme changes last year, The Harp has generally focused on acoustic and open mic performers (a'la the new Coch's Corner), but Glitch have made no statements implying this will be an unplugged show, so is this a first toe in the water for having electric bands there again? It remains to be seen! Remember, Glitch's concert has forced Tym Morrison's regular weekly gig at The Harp to be postponed to Saturday night, so we'll preview that tomorrow. There's no announced cover charge tomorrow night, you must be 19 to attend, and a 10:00 PM start time is advertised. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page!

I'm curious to hear how Glitch do tomorrow at The Harp, and if all goes well, hopefully things will open up more for full rock bands! In terms of heavier acts, I don't think a non-acoustic hard rock band has played there since Garden of Bedlam's celebration of their Kiss Battle win in December 2009. For a preview, here's Glitch (featuring Lion Ride, Sneaky Pete, and Tripod the Dog alumni) covering The Rolling Stones last fall!

Finally for today's previews, Sault Michigan hard rock quartet 415E are scheduled to return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! This is according to Kewadin's entertainment page, which is generally a great source, but I will add the disclaimer that 415E have not publically promoted these shows at all, nor has their Facebook page been updated in two months. If I hear anything that contradicts what Kewadin Casino's website says, I'll update this, but we'll treat them as on. This weekend's shows are 415E's first scheduled dates in St. Ignace in eight months, and just their second weekend of live dates since last summer, so if you've missed Chris, Dave, and company, keep their return in mind for this weekend! Admission should be free, there is a 21+ age limit in effect, and 9:00 PM start times are likely. For more details, visit the above links! Hopefully 415E are playing this weekend as advertised, as they're a very talented band with a lot of promise, so go check them out, and for a preview, here's the guys playing their self-titled song!

That's all for today, but stay tuned tomorrow for the rest of this weekend's hard rock concert previews! Thanks everyone!

An Upcoming Outdoor Charity Concert, Plus More News And Updates!!

Can you believe that this is our 29th post of the month? That's an SMS record, and we still have four days left in the month! The news and updates keep rolling in, and today's post includes a bit of backlogged stuff too, but all of it is worth mentioning! Let's begin!

I recently got an e-mail from Chris Wilson, who's looking to hold an outdoor fundraiser concert on August 14th, and asked for my help in getting the word out on this event. The show would be in benefit of Pauline's Place Youth Shelter on Pim Street, and Chris is looking for local bands (presumably of any genre) to fill a 9-10 hour timeslot for this concert. Bands won't be paid for performing, this is a charitable fundraiser, but it's for a great cause, and could get your band some exposure! No word on already confirmed acts, where the show will be held, or any other details yet, but I imagine those should come out sooner or later. So if you or your band would be interested in playing this outdoor benefit concert for Pauline's Place, e-mail Chris for more information at lp_k_fa@hotmail.com! Sounds like a nice idea, we'll have to see how this concert shapes up! As I hear more, I will let you guys know!

Next up, the final installment of Woods of Ypres' 2010 tour diary on Decibel Magazine's website is now online! Once again, bassist Shane Madden detailed the happenings, events, and notable moments of more of their tour dates, this time focusing on their final American show in Worcester, Massachusetts, and their last two Canadian dates in Toronto and Ottawa, with a conclusion afterwards to sum up the tour! We get such things to read about as what the band used to temporarily repair a broken van window, the surprising ease of crossing back into Canada, the "homecoming" feelings that the Toronto show gave them (remember, Woods were based out of Toronto in the mid-2000s), what happened in an "alternate universe" on their way to the Ottawa show, and much more from their last three tour dates! Sounds like the tour went well, though I still would have loved to have seen a local show! I know David Gold isn't highly enamored with here, but I know I'm not alone in saying that they should play here again down the road! Check out the final tour diary installment at this location, and I'll keep you posted with more Woods of Ypres updates as I hear them!

Thirdly today, I have a video that, though not newly uploaded by any stretch, is new to me! If you were around the local music scene in the mid-2000s, you may remember that local grunge band No Arrow were originally known as Murder Playground, and have a couple videos floating around online. This one, I've never seen until the other day, and it's a live performance video from New Years Eve 2006 of Murder Playground covering the Nirvana classic "Breed" at Madisons Pub! The video is in black and white, and while the video quality isn't bad, the audio is VERY scratchy. So I'm embedding this here for the historical coolness moreso than to listen to, but do check it out! I've always liked Murder Playground/No Arrow, and the dancing concertgoers in the video would likely feel the same! Check out this classic clip below, or at No Arrow's MySpace page!

And finally, I have some cool stuff to share from the local scene's past! Glen Thomas, prolific local drummer and mastermind of The Barking Eye, graciously gave me two really cool locally-relevant metal posters a couple weeks back, and I finally have room to show you guys! One is a classic poster, presumably from a concert, of Human Disorder, the Port Colborne metal band featuring Saultites/current Phatstick members Jason Taillefer & Joe LaVergne! Plain, but effective, you can check it out on your left! The other is an authentic concert poster from way back in the mid 1980s (I'm guessing 1984), from Canadian metal legends Anvil's show at The Ramada Inn (now The Best Western!) Yes, they were here in person, on April 13th of that year with special guests Riggy Zomba, a local band that later became known as Vandyl! Glen profiled Riggy Zomba/Vandyl in May on The Barking Eye, click here for details on them! Europe-style glam hard rock quintet, not bad at all, though none of the members are largely active in the local scene nowadays to my knowledge. I love both aspects of the poster, the "Forged In Fire" poster artwork and the photocopied local show poster stapled to the side. You just don't get posters like these anymore for local advertising! Huge thanks to Glen for giving these posters to me, both proudly adorn the walls of my room! Check out the Anvil/Riggy Zomba poster below, and also below that, Glen's YouTube upload of Riggy Zomba's song "Teenage Rebel" from their Vandyl days!

That's all for today, but stay tuned over the next few days for previews of this weekend's shows, my next album review (here's a hint: It's a band I've reviewed an album of before), my next out of town profiles, and more! Stay tuned!

Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile: Human Disorder & Summon

As promised, it is now time for our newest monthly profiles of two out of town hard rock/metal bands that feature at least one Saultite in their lineup! This month, we take a look at two bands that feature local guys we've already talked about here, but are by no means not worth profiling! One's broken up, the other is very much alive, and both are very talented! So, here we go, and of course, if there's something incorrect, missing, or lacking info/details, please tell me! (UPDATED: November 24, 2014)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Human Disorder (Port Colborne, Ontario)

Lineup: (Saultites in RED; members not in their final lineup in italics)

Scott Bowen (vocals)
Jason Taillefer (vocals/guitar)
Tim Letkemann (guitar)
Keith Gillam (bass)
Joe LaVergne (drums)

Official MySpace page: http://myspace.com/humandisorderon

Local Info: As mentioned in our Phatstick profile, Jason Taillefer and Joe LaVergne were born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, where they played in various local bands in the 1980s and early 1990s! You may recognize Jason from his work in Alyster and Scrooge, for example. Both moved to the Niagara Falls area in the early 1990s to further their musical career, where they eventually both found their way into Human Disorder in 1994. In 1999, the pair formed Phatstick, and have since relocated to St. Catharines. Though neither Jason or Joe live in Sault Ste. Marie anymore, they were known to come back home for the occasional Phatstick concert, so take note of that in case the band reunites!

Band Bio: Human Disorder was formed in 1994 by guitarist Tim "TbOnZ" Letkemann and Joe LaVergne, eventually acquiring the services of Jason Taillefer on vocals and guitar and Keith Gillam (Jason and Joe's future Phatstick bandmate) on bass. The quartet played numerous gigs in the Niagara Falls area in the mid-1990s, recording their debut album "Twisted Sane" in 1995, before independently releasing it in October 1996. After it's release, St. Catharines' based Blue Summit Records (now Stumble Records) signed Human Disorder under the Ruptured Discs imprint. In the late 1990s, the band was joined by vocalist Scott Bowen, and recorded their second and final CD, "Ugly Modern Aggression", which was released in 1999. The band toured all over Canada and The United States in support of the album, and the success of "U.M.A." helped get Human Disorder into the top 50 on FMQB's "Top 100 Metal Bands" list in 1999! The band broke up the next year, playing their final show on April 30th, 2000. Jason, Joe, and Keith went on to form Phatstick, while Tim and Keith launched the industrial metal band InterVenom. In their heyday, Human Disorder did play in Sault Ontario, which I bet would have been awesome!

Human Disorder are the perfect example of why I often curse my age, cause I missed a band this cool! They had a definite Pantera influence that comes through on their songs, though it had a bit of a "nu" flair that made it a bit more accessible, but not enough to sell out with! This is especially evident on "Ugly Modern Aggression", thanks to Scott Bowen's aggressive vocal style! Jason Taillefer, whether as lead or co-lead singer, also shown off some impressive singing, which fans surely saw with Phatstick too. Some of their stuff with Jason singing lead definitely reminds me more of "nu metal", but I like a lot of nu metal, so it works for me, though if you're not big on that style, you my not be as appreciative. The instrumentation is great, though the guitar solos that I've heard aren't the best. To be fair though, I haven't heard any of their full albums, but from what I have heard, I'm very impressed! Very heavy with some good melodies, great singing, and lots of energy! Pantera and nu-metal fans will have a field day with Human Disorder, and if you're craving something a touch heavier than Phatstick, look no further!

Three songs (two from "U.M.A.", one from "Twisted Sane") are on their MySpace page, along with a remix from their last album! Also, you can still buy unopened copies of "U.M.A." on Amazon for as cheap as one cent, click here to check it out for yourself! As for a video, I have found just one video online of Human Disorder, a 1999 music video for their song "Puzzled"! This was originally uploaded on Google Video 3 years ago and was filmed by Black Walk Productions. The original link is at this location, and I've uploaded this video to YouTube to spread it to the masses like it deserves! NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED!! So with that in mind, take a trip back a decade and check out "Puzzled"!

Official Facebook page (2): http://facebook.com/pages/summon/115792518441039
Official ReverbNation page: http://reverbnation.com/summon666

Local Info: The only local member of Summon wais drummer Mikey Bishop, who is sure to be familiar to local metalheads, especially ones from Sault Michigan! A veteran of numerous metal bands stretching from Ontario to Nashville, Mikey's probably best known nowadays as drummer for Brimley hard rockers Half A Man, along with former bands like the Grand Rapids death metal band Sadomasochism, playing with them in some high profile tours in the mid-2000s. Mikey's body of work includes stops in bands like Bludgeoned, Cement Pond, Dry Rot, 13 Mile Style, and most prominent of his former local bands, mid-90s groove metal rockers Lower S.E.S.! Look out for more exciting news and updates from Mikey's current projects in the near future!

Band Bio: Mikey joined Summon in 2009 upon the return of the band after a 4 year hiatus. I think Mikey replaced Joshua "Dominus" Moore as the band's drummer. The current lineup also includes founding member Chas "Necromodeus" Schoals on lead vocals and bass, Ed Ryan (who, like Mikey, is also formerly from Sadomasochism) on lead guitar, and Mike Jasso on rhythm guitar. Summon were initially formed in 1991 by Necromodeus and Xaphan, recording one demo before breaking up to focus on their work in another Michigan black metal band, Masochist. In 1995, the duo reformed Summon, releasing a demo that year and their first full length album, "Dark Descent of Fallen Souls", in 1997. Amidst numerous lineup changes, Summon released four more studio albums up to their most recent release, "Fallen", in 2005. The band went on hiatus after the departure of Xaphan in 2006, but returned in the late 2000s. Though beginning a new CD  "A New Beginning" and playing a number of concerts in Michigan in the late 2000s, Summon fell inactive after 2010, though you can now see frontman Chas Schoals with the Lansing death metal band Inebriated.

I have to be honest, black metal isn't a genre I listen to a lot. That being said, Summon are pretty good! From the songs I've heard, I've detected some very skilled black metal vocals from Necromodeus and Xaphan alike, and though I'm sure many fans will miss Xaphan in the current lineup, Necromodeus is more than capable of carrying the total vocal burden! At least with their black metal singing, it's not toneless shrieking like some other bands, so that's great! Excellent drum work too, they made sure they got top of the line guys behind the kit, especially Dominus, and I know Mikey's going to do just fine in Summon! The various lead guitarists from their early albums were good too, though when listening, I just enjoyed the assaulting heaviness of Summon, they have tons of face-melting qualities, and hopefully they return to activity and come up to the Sault area sooner or later! Here's their music video for their song "Sacred Nothing"!

That's all for today, unless there's some major, must-be-posted-today story that comes out later on. So, are you wondering what bands I'll profile next month? Well, after some thinking and searching, here's who I plan to profile: The Disciples of Rock, the inactive Blind River hard rock band featuring Saultites Aaron LeBlanc & James White, and Violet Fuse, the London Ontario hard rock band featuring the Sault Ontario-born Thom Edwards on drums! Expect that around the last week of June!

Over the next couple of days, expect brand new posts with updates on Bret Michaels, Tesla's show here next month, Stillbroke, Nixxon Dixxon, Energy Rock Radio, and more! Stay tuned for more!
