Our Newest Metal Morpheus Episode Recap!!

Single topic post today, as another new episode of local metal radio show Metal Morpheus debuted on The Borderline on Sunday night, so what should you know about it? Following last week's heavily (and divisively) topical episode, host Josh Amendola brought back his planned series of alphabetical spotlights of the metal scenes of countries from around the world for this week, and after previously jumping ahead six countries to look at Austria for differing topical reasons, he headed back to the regular order yesterday to look at metal bands from Andorra, an extremely small (but highly developed) principality on the French/Spanish border. For context, Andorra is only barely more populated than Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario! I am surprised that Josh didn't lump Andorra in with the next A countries in line, which also have small metal scenes, but he made Andorra alone work by playing local bands for almost half of the episode's runtime.

The slightly shorter 55 minute episode begins with Josh noting that you can now hear The Borderline on FM radio locally at 107.5 FM, which is news to me! In checking around for details, they launched an FM transmitter downtown on or by January 22nd, and it is low power with an estimated distance of 5-7 km from the originating source, presumably their 527 Queen Street East home base. From my checks of the CRTC's website, there has been no public application for a new FM station at 107.5 FM, so the short range may indicate that their transmitter is the biggest they can get without needing a federal license. For the record, I did try to pick up The Borderline at 107.5 FM from about 2.5 km away, and the signal did not come in (disclosure, I didn't test it downtown), but if 5-7 km is just the furthest reported signal, the range could be comparable to the transmitters used at drive-in theaters. Your mileage may vary!

In any event, you can hear The Borderline 24/7 online at this link, but FM availability is great for anyone in range, and who knows what this could lead to! Back to the Metal Morpheus episode proper, Josh next gives some statistics about Andorra & its native music, before moving into the country's very small roster of prominent metal bands, so much so that the first FOUR songs come from the same band, namely melodic death metal sextet Persefone, including their songs "In Lak'ech" (3:00), "Underworld: The Fallen & The Butterfly - Act I: Clash of the Titans" (10:35), "Mind As Universe" (17:00), and "The Demise of Oblivion" (21:50). Josh finishes the Andorran half of the episode with a song from ambient black metal solo project De Veneficas Inferi, namely "Daemonic I, Stone Witches" (30:05). The final 21 minutes of this episode belong to local metal acts, so who got played in the back half?

In order, Josh plays defunct hardcore punk band The Harsh Heads' song "Carolly" (35:15) from their kinda-released album "First Hated Then Forgotten", three songs from mysterious mid-2000s extreme metal solo project Recognition (their self-titled track [39:05], "Flying Ashes" [43:00], and "First" [45:05]), late 1990s hardcore punk band Proposition 86's song "Another Lost Cause" from their EP (47:15), and defunct Sault Michigan groove metal band Lower S.E.S.' song "Bold" (51:00) from their EP. Before playing the final song, Josh did hint that he wants to do more themed episodes apart from the alphabetical country series once he finishes with the As, and for reference, 6 countries that start with A come after Andorra (obviously excluding the already-covered Austria), with Angola next in line if Josh stays in alphabetical order. Solid episode overall that takes Metal Morpheus back to its 2021 form with quality music all around!

Some of Josh's pronunciation of Catalan terms wasn't great (points for trying, of course), and for variety's sake, maybe he should have stretched out to include more than two Andorran bands, but Persefone are a strong and heavy group in their own right, and the locals on offer were fun to hear again! Hear this and other back episodes of Metal Morpheus at the above links, and tune in for the next episode (Angola or otherwise) on Sunday night at 9:00 PM and/or on-demand after the fact! That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site soon! Thanks everyone!

News From Garden of Bedlam, MK-Ultra, A New Sound Company, And More!!

Our post marathon begins today with two news posts, and we'll start with a general one today! In this post, we have a new local sound company, the latest news from a Sault Michigan hard rock band, and this week's classic video, but first, here's another new video that I recently came across on YouTube!

On Monday, you may remember when I shown you guys a new high quality Garden of Bedlam concert video filmed by CML Productions' own Rick DellaVedova. Well, Rick's uploaded some more videos there, including a black and white version of the "New Rain" video from yesterday, with the colour version deleted. Why? I don't know, maybe he liked the black and white version more, but regardless, I changed the link on Monday's post to keep it accurate. Aside from that, Rick has uploaded a few new videos onto his YouTube channel for us to check out, including a short video of Crank Sound Distribution at work during a Garden of Bedlam show at Foggy Notions, and one cool classic video I'll be featuring later in the week, but there are three other Garden of Bedlam videos worth discussing! Two come from what looks like the sound checks for a Foggy Notions show last year, judging by the small crowd, crates on the floor, and visible daylight. They're of the band playing their songs "New Rain" & "Shallow", and everything looks and sounds real good! They also include some scattered discussions with the sound guys too, if you're interested in that!

The video I'm embedding here though is of Garden of Bedlam playing "Shallow" at last year's Rotaryfest, which sounds awesome and the crowd adds to it greatly! Rick gets some great angles of the band too, great work as always! Check the above links for all of Rick's new Garden of Bedlam videos, and here's "Shallow" from Rotaryfest!

Next up, here's some long awaited news from Sault Michigan hard rockers MK-Ultra, who we first told you guys about in January! Firstly, MK-Ultra have announced the addition of bassist Bill Spence to the band, reuniting him with his former Absolute & Riot! By Night bandmate Ben Huyck. Good choice, Bill & Ben had chemistry from the Absolute material I've heard! MK-Ultra are still looking for a rhythm guitarist and (maybe) a drummer to round out their lineup, so if you or someone you know are at all interested, shoot the band a message on Reverbnation, MySpace, or on their brand new Facebook page! Yes, they're on Facebook as of February 28th, where they've announced plans for a future CD of some type, a logo contest with a free CD as the prize for the winner, and plans for live shows beginning in June! They also hinted towards a new drummer already being found in their last Facebook update, saying that "Justin" will be laying down some drum tracks soon. My first thought was former Absolute drummer Justin Lawless, but I don't know enough to assume either way. Sounds good overall, hopefully MK-Ultra's plans fall into place, we'll be watching! Check out their material and band news at the above links!

Thirdly, here's a story I've pushed back far too long, as you guys (especially band members) should know about it! Half Past guitarist Alain Fletcher & bassist Arthur Lacasse have started a new live sound reinforcement company named Double A Sound, which will eventually give a more professional quality sound to concerts and events. They're not ready to go yet, but they have lots of gear ready to help make your band sound at it's best! When they officially start doing sound at local concerts, their rate will be $200 for shows featuring one or two bands, with an additional $50 for each added band from there (i.e. $250 for 3 bands, $300 for 4.) For all current details, visit their official Facebook page! I think this a great move by Al & Art to give bands another option for professional sound at their shows, and though I don't know how their prices and gear would stack up to Crank, for example, I have faith that Double A Sound will make their presence felt once they start doing sound at some local concerts! Check the above links for all you need to know from Double A Sound, and I'll keep you posted if some big updates come out!

And finally for today, here's this week's classic video! This is both our longest and oldest classic video so far, and it's a good one, so here's what you should know! As Half A Man are rocking The Bird in Sault Michigan on Sunday night, I found it fitting to post a video related to them again, but this time, of frontman Erik Rintamaki & drummer Mikey Bishop's mid-1990s local band Lower S.E.S.! Their posthumous MySpace page is full of 20 minute+ concert videos from their heyday, but I figured I'd start small for classic uploads with their 20 minute set from the battle of the bands that they won in 1994 at The Tumble Inn in Eckerman, Michigan! The video features their entire set, including their introduction, and it has the band's classic lineup covering Slayer's "South of Heaven" & "Seasons in the Abyss", Nirvana's "Rape Me", Pantera's "Becoming", Korn's "Blind", and their own original song "Bold"! I broke up the set into five videos (the Slayer covers are combined) and uploaded them to the SMS' YouTube channel earlier today, but you can check out the original unbroken video at http://myspace.com/lowersesband/videos/battle-of-the-bands/60189504. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED! Lower S.E.S. were a great band and they deserve wider exposure like this, even if it's been 16 years since they broke up!

This was filmed by an attendee on what appears to be a tape camcorder, so I apologize for the quality, which isn't as clear as it would be on a digital camera, but remember, this was 1994. The band sound good when they're clearly audible, and they have a good grasp on the covers, but it'd be cool to hear a few more originals, and more guitar solos from Andy Nash. His solo on the Pantera cover was nice, but I wish we'd have gotten them more! I hope we'll find more classic videos from the 1990s in the future, Lower S.E.S. deserve all the kudos in the world for posting these videos online! So here's their Slayer covers, but check the above links for the rest of this 20 minute battle of the bands set!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for a new Woods of Ypres-centric post later tonight chock full of new concert videos! Thanks everyone, and remember, we review Destroilet's EP TOMORROW!

Lower S.E.S. EP Review!!

It's time for our 18th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, and the last one of 2010! With new local metal album releases slowing down again (despite the amount that are in the works), we're dipping into the archives once again for today's review! For the first time in over four months, we're taking a look at a Sault Michigan band's album, in what is also our oldest CD review to date! The band in question is defunct local groove metal band Lower S.E.S., and today's review focuses on their 1996 self-titled (and only) EP! Recorded in 1996 at Superior Sound Studios in Sault Ontario, the band won the recording time for this EP at a local battle of the bands at The Tumble Inn in nearby Eckerman, Michigan. If you guys know who produced the album, let me know! This self-titled EP features Lower S.E.S.' classic lineup, including frontman Micah Masta, guitarist Andy Nash, bassist Erik Rintamaki, and his current Half A Man bandmate Mikey Bishop on drums! The EP, which is out of print, features five songs, and all are streamable at Lower S.E.S.' MySpace page! I also uploaded the EP's tracks to The Sault Metal Scene's YouTube channel to increase the band's exposure like they deserve, and the song titles below will send you to our YouTube uploads of each track! With five songs clocking in at 17 minutes of music, this will be a quick one, so let's begin with the first song, "Bold"! (EDITED: 8:54 PM)

"Bold" starts off with the old Disney movie intro "And now, our feature presentation" before launching into a heavy groove riff section that's not too fast, but appropriately heavy! Micah's vocals make a quick instant mark with a nice scream, but aside from that, the first minute is more of the same stuff, with a few minor changes. Well played, but it drags along. Once the actual singing kicks in, you can give Micah credit for very heavy vocals that almost cross the death metal line, fit the songs very well! However, the audio quality makes the vocals very hard to discern. I don't know if this is the production quality or just how it sounds on MySpace, but the vocals sound buried and not very clear. The song is very cool and sets the tone for the EP well, with very heavy guitars and nice drumming from Mikey Bishop! I do sense a nice Pantera influence at parts as well, but the song just seems to be all on the same note. If you hear one section of the song, you'll hear it again later, there's not a lot of variety. No guitar solos either, that would have been a nice addition, especially with this being the longest song on the EP. Still, it's a nice opener and would surely have gotten fans moshing at any of their old concerts!

Second is "Alone", which has a nice breakdown-ish opening and more energy to the overall sound to start! Mikey's drumming instantly captures my attention, and Erik Rintamaki gets a nice bass solo section about a minute in as well before launching into the verses! The overall sound here is more creative than "Bold" was, if a bit lighter in tone, though still heavy! Micah's vocals come in clearer here, but if you asked me to transcribe the lyrics, I wouldn't be a lot of help. 2:10 into the song, things get very fast and very heavy, easily my favourite part of "Alone", which shows a lot more of what Lower S.E.S. have to offer than "Bold" did! That's not a bad thing, I like both songs, but "Alone" shows a lot more of the aggression and talent these guys brought to the band! The ending seems tailor made for fist pumping as well, it closes the song well! I really enjoyed this song, but clearer vocal quality and a guitar solo would have put it over the edge!

Track number 3 is "Beside Myself", which is an album low 2:08 long. The opening's very heavy hitting, and you might find your head banging to it! The song quickly launches in full with Micah using his voice to great effect with nice vocal control, and some crushing guitar work from Andy Nash! If the production was better, it'd sound even heavier! Mikey's drumming is at top form again here! Aside from the lack of a guitar solo (I'm losing faith that there will be any at all), the song seems to wrap up too quickly, and Erik's bass solo, while very well played, kills the momentum midway through. When the full band launches back, Micah's screaming and the band's obvious chemistry shine through, and end the song on an aggressive high! Another quality song, but I wish it was longer and fuller sounding.

Following that is "Larian", which has a very brutal opening that sounds like it belongs at the end of a song! The riffing has a galloping quality at parts, and the drumming matches well! Micah's vocals seem more reserved in their heaviness than on other songs, but things do get more aggressive as the song moves forward! Mikey and Erik really shine here, they're audible and playing with a lot of variety! Another quality track, but I do have problems with it. The song just seems to end out of nowhere, when a heavy breakdown section would have been cool, there's no guitar solo again, and the end seemed very methodical and straightforward compared to the energy captured earlier in the song. Still, it's a very good song!

The EP's closer is "State of the Union", which begins with Erik's absolute best bass solo of the album! If there really are no guitar solos, then at least Erik's helping fill that gap! When the full band kicks in, things are heavy but have a lighter feel than on earlier songs. This song definitely is slower than the past few, but retains a nice metal groove! Nothing too experimental is tried here, it just retains appropriate aggression and heaviness throughout, though there are some buried spoken word sections that sound cool, if hard to make out. Micah's singing is at top form here, especially on the choruses, and the drumming is a standout part of this song as well! This a solid capper to the EP, but I'd have liked to have seen Lower S.E.S. try some different things to make the last song really stick with us to close out the album. Still a very good song though!

So, how does Lower S.E.S.' only released album hold up after 14 years? Well, on a sheer musical basis, these guys were a very talented band, and I can see why they won the events they did in the mid-1990s! They are good songwriters, the chemistry is evident, and each band member had different strengths! Micah Masta has good control over his voice, and can growl and scream very nicely! Andy Nash has an ear for good guitar riffs, and he lays down some very crushing material on this EP! I wonder what Micah and Andy have been up to musically since? Erik Rintamaki's bass work really shines, and his inclusion of bass solos and some creative and audible bass lines helped complete a lot of the songs here! And Mikey Bishop shown here that he's an extremely good drummer, and as his later work with local and Lower Peninsula bands has also shown, he's only gotten better since! It's a wonder Lower S.E.S. only lasted two years, cause they proved to be a more than capable metal quartet, and this EP could have led to some great things had they stuck with it. Songs like "Alone" and "Beside Myself" are proof positive of that!

However, there are flaws, biggest of all being the production quality. To be fair, Lower S.E.S. recorded this 14 years ago, so I'm not expecting anything on a Miguel Gauthier level, but it does hurt each song. The overall quality is muffled in many respects, and I can barely make out what Micah's singing about in any of the songs. I can't tell if this is MySpace's fault or the original recording quality, but it does hurt the overall sound. Another big issue was the complete lack of guitar solos. Again, I'm not expecting the world, but Andy Nash had such skill with his riffs and melodies that you think they'd throw in at least one! Erik's bass solos helped, but for a groove metal band with such a heavy sound, a guitar solo or two would have added to everything! Even still, this was a solid debut effort from Lower S.E.S., and I imagine that had they stayed together, they could have went on to even bigger and better things in the local scene! Though the recording quality dates the material, their sound would go over just as well today as it did then, and they're a great find of a local band that shouldn't be missed, so definitely give Lower S.E.S.' original material a spin and see what you think!

So there is this month's CD review, capping off 2010 on a heavy note! So, what will be our first review of 2011, tentatively scheduled for January 10th-17th? I don't know, but here are my plans. If a new album (or two, or more) come out before 2010 ends, then our first new album review will be in very early January! If nothing new comes out until next month, then we'll take it from there. If no new albums come out at all by January 17th, we will do an archive review from a Sault Ontario metal band, and it will likely be tied in to a scheduled concert featuring that band or a member of that band. What band could be next for a CD review, if it's of a new release? Check our latest "Where Are The New Albums?" post to see what's on the horizon, cause one of those albums could be next! I will say that the next review won't be either of Sykotyk Rampage's new albums, if they come out in the next month, as it will still be too soon after my "Bella Disgusta" review. Watch out in the spring for at least one review from the "Genius Mushroom" series! Time will tell what our next review will be, so stay tuned for updates over the next few weeks!

That's all for today, stay tuned for more local metal news tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Lower S.E.S.

It's that time again, as it's the third installment of our newest monthly feature, the Defunct Local Band Profile Series! Each month, I hope to profile and discuss a local metal or hard rock band from the scene's past, randomly chosen from our extensive band links. All band choices are made at COMPLETE RANDOM, with no rules against bands for talent, recording quality, prominence, or longevity. As long as they have a freely available internet page, they could be next! This month, we take our first look back at a band from Sault Michigan, and these guys are pretty prominent, so they'll be especially worth looking at! So let's begin this month's profile! (Edited on August 19th, 2013)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lower S.E.S.

Genre: Groove Metal

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Members: (Members not in their last full lineup in italics. E-mail me at robertfigures@hotmail.com if you know of any omissions or errors to their lineup!)

Micah Masta, vocals
Andy Nash, guitar
Erik Rintamaki (Half A Man, Train Wreck, Set To Random), bass
Mikey Bishop (Half A Man, Dirtbag In A Dress, Summon), drums

Audio/Video: Despite being inactive for 14 years, Lower S.E.S. had a good output of music online for fans to check out until this year. Their MySpace page used to have eight lengthy videos from their mid-1990s heyday, but all were deleted with MySpace's new look and layout, but maybe they'll return in time. Luckily, one of those concert video clips is on YouTube as well, but the MySpace loss is still a bummer. Their self-titled and only EP survives via this YouTube playlist, and luckily, some YouTube videos survive, so here's one of the Lower S.E.S. clips, two songs from their set opening for L.A. Guns in 1996!

Info/Analysis: Lower S.E.S. were active from 1994-1996 in the Sault Michigan music scene, and gained some notable levels of success in the process! They played numerous area shows and events, first making huge waves by winning a major battle of the bands at The Tumble Inn in nearby Eckerman, also later placing at a local "Battle Royal" event. These successes led to gigs where they opened for Warrant, Vince Neil, L.A. Guns, and Slaughter, among others. Studio time won in the above Battle of the Bands helped them record their self-titled debut E.P., though the band broke up shortly after it's release. Some members of Lower S.E.S. are still active in music, notably Erik Rintamaki & Mikey Bishop's current work in Half A Man, and Mikey's extensive black metal drumming output. It's a wonder Lower S.E.S. were only active for about 2 years, because they were a very good metal band! Definite Pantera influence, with hard charging riffs, aggressive vocals, and a definite mosh-worthy style! Erik's bass work is great, and the drumming and vocals stand out well! The lack of solos is too noticeable, and the production on the studio tracks does sound a bit muffled, but they were definitely a talented band who I'd have loved to have seen live had I been around then! Check them out, they have a great sound that is very welcome locally, and take a look at my review of their E.P. from December at this location!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope you guys enjoyed this month's defunct local band profile! Our next profile on a Sault Michigan band is pencilled in for December, so be on the lookout for that! But which band will be profiled next month? Well, through completely random selection, I've decided that next month will feature two bands, as I found that the randomly chosen band didn't have enough substantial information or material to warrant it's own post, so I randomly chose another band to go with them! So next month, our Defunct Local Band Profiles will be on... Death Rise, featuring past and present members of D.O.T.H. and Caveman Morrison, and The White Knights, featuring former members of Fitswitch and Fingerbone! Stay tuned for that between October 14th and 20th!

That's all for now, but stay tuned TONIGHT for a short notice LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, a newly discovered local band, and some brand new local metal concert videos! Thanks everyone!
