To wrap up another month at the SMS, here's this month's YouTube Channel Profile, our monthly spotlight feature on 1-3 YouTube channels whose content is half or more comprised of videos relevant to local metal, hard rock, and/or punk artists and/or concerts! I only realized when I got to work on this post that I did not pick our next featured channel last month, as usual for the series, so until I started writing this intro, I had no idea what channel I'd randomly select. I did randomly pick a channel now though, as well as the channel(s) for next month, so we're back on track, and let's take a dive into a channel with some interesting footage from two very different local periods!
Owner:Dell Bros. drummer Rick Dellavedova, also known as "Rick Widow", frontman of the defunct local glam metal band Amethyst
Channel Timeline:Launched on October 23rd, 2010; Videos uploaded from that day until April 2014
Channel Summary:Rick noted in the channel's description that it had "live performance music videos", which is largely correct. Five of his seven videos of local bands in action on stage, all filmed by himself for CML Productions, including one of original rock veterans Wishbone in 2014. The other two include a music video for an old band of his, and a 14 second clip of Crank Sound Distribution setting up their equipment before a 2010 concert that Rick filmed for his channel. While ostensibly for personal use, Rick did advertise his services for professional event filmography there. Why You Should Watch:This channel will primarily interest fans of Garden of Bedlam, who are the focus of four of the videos and cameo on the Crank Sound Distribution clip, but fans of Amethyst and Wishbone will find something to like as well! Note that this channel has not been visibly updated in almost eight years, and it does not feature any videos of Rick with The Dell Bros. (f.k.a. The Paul Dellavedova Trio).
Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:
Amethyst - Snakeye Strut: Rick's first video is a posthumous music video/slideshow for Amethyst's song "Snakeye Strut" from their 1994 studio album "Innocent As Hell", and features a rare extant source of actual Amethyst video footage, especially with their "Waste of Time" music video being taken down from YouTube years back. Featuring Rick alongside guitarists Jose "Wales" Temperao & Mike Haas, bassist Gordon "Chipp" Robb, and drummer Phil Temperao, this video is well edited and gives solid highlights of Amethyst's heyday, and being set to a catchy old school hard rock number never hurts! This is the channel's most popular video aside from the Crank clip, and the entire "Innocent As Hell" album is on Reverbnation.
Garden Of Bedlam "Shallow" Live @ Foggy's: All but two of Rick's videos have something to do with 2007-2015 hard rock quartet Garden of Bedlam, who he had a working relationship with in 2010 to film their performances, though his videos of them weren't uploaded until 2011. One video on Rick's own channel features Buzz, the Belleaus, and Derek playing "Shallow" during their headlining set at Rotaryfest's Second Stage in July 2010, but the better quality videos are of them at Foggy Notions (now Coch's Corner) playing "New Rain" and (as featured here) "Shallow" again. These appear to be soundchecks before the show proper based on the sparse crowd, unloaded equipment, and dialogue with Crank Sound. In spite of that, these have solid recording quality with strong performances as you'd expect!
Garden Of Bedlam "New Rain" Live @ Essar Centre: After winning the Kiss Battle of the Bands in December 2009, Garden of Bedlam were tapped as the local openers for the long-delayed Kiss concert at The Essar Centre (now GFL Memorial Gardens) in August 2010, with Rick filming them from a side-stage angle. Note that this was originally uploaded in colour before being taken down to be converted to black & white. Still, this captures Garden of Bedlam performing to their fullest in their biggest ever concert set, and early fans were definitely into it! You can see more of Rick & CML's videos of the band on their own YouTube channel, including proper music videos.
I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profile! This series will return on or around March 26th, and unlike this month, I did remember to randomly select a channel (two in this case) ahead as normal! I first randomly picked Concert Channel, which features videos for 2019's Offspring/Sum 41 show at GFL Memorial Gardens, but there's not a lot of diversity there beyond just a few videos of both bands, so I chose an extra channel with only has one video to fill things out, namely Old Man Wyrn's channel, which has one song from inactive local black metal project Abhorrent Forest. Look for these next month, and for more news and notes on the site soon! Thanks everyone!
On this 22nd of the month, here's our newest YouTube Channel Profile, our last before we formally include channels in our random selection that have a high ratio of local punk videos! This month's selection in our monthly look at YouTube channel(s) with a majorty of SMS-relevant clips takes us to a channel that's been a steady source of metal & punk action since the mid-2000s, and is owned by a very familiar face, so read on below for this month's YouTube Channel Profile!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rick Styles (http://www.youtube.com/fitswitch)
Channel Timeline: Launched on February 16th, 2006; Videos posted from that day through March 2014
Channel Summary: Originally the
official YouTube channel for Rick White's popular mid-2000s punk/metal band Fitswitch, Rick began expanding the channel to include other bands & videos in December 2006, later including an early No Arrow performance and two clips referring to his old band The Pisstanks, though neither features the band playing a song. After his last Fitswitch video from one of their reunion concerts went up in the spring of 2009, later uploads would revolve around Rick's newer bands, focusing on Frightlight & Redundant through 2012, and Fist Fighting Stephen Hawking in early 2014, with his most recent video being a solo guitar cover of The Kittens' song "Great Dane".
Why Should You Watch: Rick's channel is worth checking out if you've ever been a fan of any of his more prominent bands, as it's got some solid concert footage spanning over 8 years, and the talent and live energy is present on these whether you're a punk or metal fan! Note that the quality of the videos can be sporadic (especially the older Fitswitch clips), and aside from the Redundant videos, there's no footage relating to bands that he drummed for. For reference, note that while Rick did post videos on his channel earlier this year, it's not uncommon to go months without new postings there.
Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:
Suicide Girl - Fitswitch: Though Rick's most viewed video is actually of a pool party, it's not connected musically to any of his bands, so we won't embed it here. Instead, here's his second most viewed video, of Fitswitch playing their song "Suicide Girl" at a basement jam session circa September 2006, late in their original run together. Their lineup at the time featured Rick on lead guitar alongside Frightlight bandmates J.D. Pearce & Chris Thompson on vocals & drums, plus his Redundant bandmate Justin Langlois on rhythm guitar, and ex-Sense of Truth bassist Curtis Beauchamp, though with the band wearing what appear to be Jason masks, it's hard to tell without the end credits. The video is very dark too, and the colour filters don't necessarily help, but it's a strong performance musically, with a neat ambiance, and J.D.'s melodic vocals fit well throughout! Give more of Rick's Fitswitch videos from the late 2000s a look above!
Fright Light - Dead town (live): Rick uploaded two videos of his recent punk/metal band (and Fitswitch successors) Frightlight onto his channel from a concert at the old Coch's Corner on June 16th, 2010, which was the famed "secret show" that still has never been publically detailed in it's entirety as to what happened that night. All I'll say is that the events of their Toronto tour date vlog from 2012 (also from Rick's channel) bear a large common element. As for the videos, an attendee filmed Frightlight's then lineup (Rick, J.D. as "Johnny Pints", bassist Mike "Eddie Fright" Gingras, and drummer Jeff "Shrek Ogre" Richards) playing their originals "Fright Night" & "Dead Town Anywhere" that night, though the audio can be tinny through this camera, and the absence of a second guitarist is noticeable. Still, this was a solid early performance from the guys on a big night... you had to be there!
Redundant Live Halloween Show 2011 at Feedback: Running for 41 minutes, Rick's longest video comes from his current punk trio Redundant's Halloween night concert in 2011 at the former Foggy Notions (then in it's brief run as Feedback, now the current Coch's Corner.) The video features Redundant (also featuring frontman Justin Langlois & Rick's brother James on bass) in Green Day costumes playing an all-cover set, including covers of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" (with usual Metallica intro), Green Day's "Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?", Screeching Weasel's "Cool Kids", Weezer's "El Scorcho" (with usual TLC interlude), Del Shannon's "Runaway", Metallica's "Enter Sandman", Blink-182's "Dammit" (with Fitswitch alum Larry Mousseau on guest drums), Green Day's "When I Come Around" (with "Friends" theme intro), part of Tool's "Sober", and NOFX's "Bob", before a noise complaint and a police visit called the show short. Strong energetic set, and well filmed at stationary and moving angles from near the stage, so fans will enjoy the fun yet attitude fueled covers on display!

I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profile! Next month in this series, we'll profile a channel picked from our deepest pool yet of local channels due to the punk expansion (217 and counting!), but what channel got picked this time? Through 100% random selection, we've chosen Bad Back drummer Nathan Sauve's old YouTube channel, which features videos of him with Bad Back, Lion Ride, Fuller, and more, so there's a wide array of sounds for fans to enjoy there! Look for that on or around August 22nd, and stay tuned for more news and notes this week! Thanks everyone!
We're back with some news and updates on this Monday afternoon, so what's on tap? We have a new song upload, band additions for a bunch of upcoming fall concerts, and our recap of a concert I caught a portion of on Friday night, but first, something a little more serious that we should acknowledge that you may have heard about this weekend.
I thought I should start by offering our best wishes to Frightlight guitarist and prolific local drummer Rick "Styles" White, who was hospitalized following an incident at The Thrill Junkies' show at The Roosevelt Hotel on Friday night. Details are murky on what happened, but from what I've read on Facebook, there was some type of altercation that required an ambulance be called to The Rosie. Last I heard, he was still in the hospital, but he is in good spirits, and that's definitely great to hear! However, his injuries appear to be bad enough to knock him out of concerts through at least late next month, as Frightlight have been forced to drop out of frontman Johnny Pints' annual Halloween Party at The Roosevelt Hotel on October 26th, which would have been their fifth straight set at this annual Halloween weekend event since their 2009 debut. Replacing them will be Johnny's newest local band Jack Spades (featuring T-Rex Manning's Tiffany Stocco & The Bear Hunters' Justin Lam & Johnny Belanger), and they'll have a set tailored to Halloween to fit the evening, so don't miss them!
I assume this will also take Rick out of next week's Ray Brown benefit show at The Verdi Hall (which he is scheduled to play with Redundant), but this has yet to be officially confirmed. Out of respect to Rick & his family, I'm in no position to say anything further, and for new info that doesn't affect his bands or shows, we won't cover it here for that reason, including any possible criminal/legal fallout. After all, we're a site about local metal/hard rock news, not TMZ. Get well soon Rick, we're pulling for you!
Next up, here's what I caught from Friday night's debut performance by new local rock cover band Glitch! After The Hydra's Teeth wrapped up downstairs, I bolted upstairs to The Rockstar Bar to catch the last chunk of Glitch's second set, so what'd I see? From what I was there for, Glitch covered U2, Beatles, and Rolling Stones songs, and all were sung by guitarist Mark Oliverio, who has a solid voice! Still, those songs may not scream "hard rock", but Glitch did cover Godsmack, Pearl Jam, and Aerosmith earlier in that set, and there was roughly an even split between harder covers and more general stuff, but as I wasn't there for the bookending sets, I can't speak to their other material. I will note that drummer Mike Oakley had his headset mic on, so he does appear to sing at least some songs with this new band (a'la Sneaky Pete.) The crowd was fun and large for their set, and the members talents were strong, but there could be more energy as a whole, with Marco Pedalino often appearing to be very reserved & quiet on stage.
I like what I heard, but I'll definitely have to see more of Glitch's live show to get a fuller sense of their set and sound, especially to hear how they handle heavier songs, but all 4 members have histories in such bands, so that shouldn't be a problem. I did get some photos while there, so click here or visit our Facebook page to check them out, and I also uploaded a video from the show onto Facebook, so here's their cover of The Rolling Stones' "Doom & Gloom"!
Also today, here's some updates on opening bands for local grunge/alternative quartet Haggith's announced slate of fall concerts! Despite earlier hints of fellow PaperClip Productions bands opening for them in their series of upcoming New American Pub gigs, two of the three will be opened by unaffiliated bands, including local punk trio The Northern Tragedy THIS WEDNESDAY (our preview of that is coming tomorrow) and new local rock band Nikkfitt (pictured) on Friday, October 20th! Though their genre and setlist is still unknown, their lineup includes singer/band namesake Nikki Bryant, guitarists Jacques Marceau (ex-Caveman Morrison) and Robert Ross (who I believe replaced Dutch Vanderploeg in the band), bassist Andrew MacDonald (ex-Fitswitch/Scary Uncles), and drummer Glenn Lavoie. The lineup has a lot of promise based on what I know of them, but we'll have to see how they sound, so stay tuned for updates! They have also joined Haggith among the performers for the Jack Bryant benefit show at The Rockstar Bar on Thursday, October 3rd, where they'll play alongside two more new confirmations, those being The 7 Year Itch (a.k.a. Griphook minus Brian Oja, as last seen at The Rockstar Bar in July), and local country band Thin Ice in an acoustic set.
No word on why this won't be a full Griphook set, but there's now a nice diverse lineup for the Jack Bryant benefit, and I believe Nikki Bryant was his daughter in law, so they fit extra well for that event! Keep an eye out for updates on these shows as they come in (including a possible opener for Haggith's show at The New A on November 22nd), and stay tuned tomorrow for our preview of Wednesday's Haggith/Northern Tragedy show there!
Finally for today, here's the latest song from local solo grind/gore project Malignant Neoplasm, as uploaded to their label Blood Shed Productions' YouTube channel on Sunday! Entitled "Retinoblastoma" (a type of eye cancer), this IS planned to be on "Blood Shed's Bloody 3 Way" demo with fellow label artists Brutaly Fatal & Rotopsy (formerly Spitneck.) A short 45 second track, it has no discernable vocals, but a lot of programmed blast beats and is clearly heavy, it's just not something I can accurately comment on given it's length. Check it out below though!
That's all for today, but stay tuned for our Haggith concert preview and more tomorrow! Thanks everyone!
Finally, we have our first news post of 2013 on this fourth day of the year (the slow news trend from the holidays is ongoing), but we've got a lot to get to on this Friday morning nonetheless! Today, we have a few assorted recent news stories and a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next weekend in Sault Ontario, but first, we've gotta address some concert cancellations, all concerning shows this weekend that would have been the first heavier local shows of 2013. Both local metal cover trio Caveman Morrison & local alternative hard rock quartet The Suicide Kings were slated to play live this weekend (Caveman Morrison at The Roosevelt Hotel tonight & tomorrow, and The Suicide Kings tomorrow only), but both bands' gigs have been cancelled. Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison confirmed their cancellations in a comment reply on the Facebook event page tonight, while Suicide Kings frontman Mike Gaetano deleted their show's event page just a few minutes ago. In both cases, neither band revealed a full reason for the cancellations, but hopefully nothing bad happened with either! (Updated at 11:26 PM)
These are disappointing for sure (and oddly coincidental), especially if you were hoping for these shows to ring in 2013 for the local metal scene today, but I'm sure we'll see both Caveman Morrison & The Suicide Kings back soon! In the latter's case, they'll make their Docks debut next weekend, but I'll keep you guys posted when Caveman Morrison's next show is announced! Now, let's move on to a concert that hasn't been cancelled, so here's what you need to know!
With today's cancellations, the first confirmed heavier show of 2013 goes down one week from today, and it involves the return of local grunge quartet Haggith to the concert stage! According to a post on their Facebook page yesterday, the guys will make their first live concert appearance of 2013 at The Speak Easy at Algoma University on January 11th, which will mark their first ever show at that venue. Disregard that the post hyping this show labels it as happening next Saturday, that's an error as far as I can tell. Though full details have yet to be made public, this actually has been alluded to on band pages in the past, as Haggith had hyped an upcoming Algoma University gig back in September via this photo, so this has been in the works! According to Facebook, this concert will have an oddly early start time of 8:30 PM, with no cover charge or potential age limits announced yet. Check the above links for more details! Even with minimal information as of yet, it will be nice to see Haggith back on stage after a month and a half away, and I wonder if this will coincide with the "Flight 75" CD release? Stay tuned for updates as they come in!
Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news stories from the last little while (two of which involve brothers/bandmates), and as always, these are in alphabetical order by band or artist name:
Redundant bassist James White revealed on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group on Christmas Eve that he was hoping to start/join a new local band. He's vetoed doing genres already being done locally for this project (i.e. not classic rock, 1980s metal, or punk), but this could still skew heavier if you have the right genres in mind, so message James on Facebook via the above links if you're interested!
Local thrash metal band Pillory have revealed that they will move forward as a band following the passing of guitarist Andres Duchesne last month, and they are currently looking for a new guitarist to fill the void. According to their Facebook page, they'd prefer a lead guitarist who's into thrash metal, and if you want to audition or know someone who might fit, feel free to message them at the above links. It'll be tough to replace Andres for sure, but hopefully they find the right person for the job!
Frightlight/T-Rex Manning frontman J.D. Pearce is looking for donations from local bands & businesses towards Frightlight bandmate Rick White's upcoming stag & doe on February 16th, as the original prizes for it were ruined in a "natural disaster" in his garage recently. You guys can help make up for the losses by donating some merchandise or wares for Rick's stag & doe, so message J.D. at this location if you can help, and best of luck to Rick on his upcoming nuptials!
That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes hopefully this weekend! Thanks everyone!
It's time for another news post at the SMS, and if you're a fan of Tym Morrison and his band projects, you'll find a lot of news and updates related to them today! Also on tap is some new "Woods V" reviews and this week's classic video, but let's launch things with some Tym Morrison-related LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!
Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison is staying very busy with his acoustic solo concerts, thanks to another weekly concert arrangement being added to his schedule! According to a new Facebook event page, Tym will bring his unplugged sets of hard rock covers to The Rockstar Bar "every Thursday" starting next week on March 8th, with new shows likely for the following weeks. Assuming that his Saturday afternoon arrangement at Bossy's Pub N' Grub is alive and well, this will be the first time that Tym has ran two weekly concert arrangements simultaneously since last summer's brief run at both The Service Grill & The Tilt'n Hilton in Hilton Beach. Like usual for his non-Bossy's shows, Tym will be on at The Rockstar Bar at 10:00 PM on Thursdsay, you must be 19 to attend, and I'd bring cash for a cover just in case. Check the above links for more details! It'll definitely be interesting to see Tym solo at The Rockstar Bar, but hopefully these shows gain a following similar to his other weekly arrangements, and maybe the nighttime setting will encourage larger crowds! Stay tuned for more on his next solo shows at Bossy's, The Rockstar Bar, and elsewhere as I hear of them!
Also in new concerts involving Tym Morrison, his band Caveman Morrison are returning to the live concert stage at the end of the month! This talented metal trio will make their 2012 debut for a full weekend set at The Nicolet Tavern on March 30th & 31st, over three months after they last rocked the stage, which isn't as long of a wait as some others have been! Notably, these shows will feature the debut of their new lineup, but I'll have more on that in a bit. Admission is likely free for both the Friday & Saturday shows, you must be 19 to attend, and a 9:30 PM start time is listed for both concerts. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page and the band's newly relaunched Facebook group! It's great to finally see Caveman Morrison back rocking the area, and hopefully there's a lot more in store beyond this month from them! While Tym's acoustic shows are always fun, the plugged-in metal onslaught of Caveman Morrison is always a welcome sight, and it's nice to see them back at it locally! That said, their lineup will look different from it's late 2011 incarnation, as Caveman Morrison have welcomed Bear Hunters drummer Johnny Belanger back to the fold, replacing Rick White. A reason for Rick's departure wasn't publicized, though I heard from both Rick & Tym earlier this year that he'd left amicably. I just waited for official word from band pages to plug it here, which came via the band's Facebook group yesterday. This ends Rick's brief second tenure with Caveman Morrison, but it's great to see Johnny back! He had originally been Caveman Morrison's drummer in late 2010 after replacing Jeff Richards, but didn't play with them long before Willie Bellerose replaced him the following year. He was a good fit with Tym and company, and he'll surely be back rocking it with them later this month! Notably, Johnny's return also reunites him with his former Browbeat bandmate James White, and they had chemistry together themselves, so hopefully Johnny's return pays off all around, and don't miss Johnny's return to Caveman Morrison at the end of the month! Fourthly today, let's share some more reviews of Woods of Ypres' final recorded album "Woods V: Grey Skies & Electric Light" today, seeing as there's many more of them to touch on! On February 10th, "Steel Druhm" from the metal blog Angry Metal Guy gave "Woods V" a 4.5/5, calling it "emotionally crippling" and referring to how unusual it was to review given the lyrical content and frontman David Gold's passing, but praised it's simplicity and did call it their best album to date. Nice review, but you can definitely see the struggle in reviewing it, so check it out at this location! Also last month, Doc Godin from the website Metal Storm declined to give "W5" a rating, but still reviewed it positively. He called it a "pretty decent" album, but criticized those who tend to overrate it due to David's death, and he did point out some recycled melodies and boring stretches among some very heartfelt moments. It's good to see a more honest & critical (yet still positive) review of "Woods V", so click here to give it a read! And finally, "GyZ" from the music blog Noise Shaft gave this album a 9.3/10, praising the band for their brand of "underground retro gloom" and calling it a "pleasant surprise", though the review on the whole is written differently from most reviews of this album I've seen. Visit this link to check it out, and stay tuned for more "Woods V" reviews soon!
And finally, here's this week's classic video, and I know this is fairly late in the week, but better late than never! To help spread things out a bit, we're going with a video not tied in with a band playing this weekend, as this week, we're focusing on Shit Liver! The local grime/crust death metal trio haven't been seen on a local stage at all yet this year, but their following is still noticeable, and fans should like this week's classic video of their cover of Dystopia's "Backstabber"! Not a recent sight in their setlists, this comes from (I think) the 5th Roosevelt Hotel metal night on January 20th, 2011. You may have seen a clearer and closer video of this same performance via the band's official YouTube channel last year, but it never hurts to get a different angle on a song! Shit Liver fans will definitely like this video, but as usual, their sound can be polarizing, and non-fans probably won't see this video on the same level. The camera work is shaky and dark too, but I did lighten the quality after uploading this to YouTube. This video was filmed by an attendee and was later posted to Facebook by drummer Matt Baic on January 24th of last year, with the original video still visible at http://facebook.com/video/video.php?v=495497494822.
NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED!! All credit for this video goes to Shit Liver and the original filmer, I'm just trying to share this video with a wider audience like it deserves! I appreciate Shit Liver's sound and approach, and fans are bound to enjoy this Dystopia cover, so give it a look below, and watch out for their return no later than next month's Ypres Metal Fest!
Let's get back to some big news today, and we're loaded with some cool stories tonight, including LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for the next few days, including the continuation of a local concert series and another band's rise from the ashes, plus some new videos, details on a new local band, and more, so here's what you need to know!
There will indeed be a Roosevelt Hotel metal night THIS THURSDAY, continuing the bi-weekly schedule under new promoter Stephane Vincent, making this the 40th Rosie metal night overall and third under it's current form! Three local bands are signed for this week, including metal night mainstays The Bear Hunters & Shit Liver in their 10th appearance together at a Thursday metal concert at The Roosevelt Hotel! It's always good to see them share the stage again, and you know their proficient yet different takes on the genre of death metal will always be welcome to mosh to, so don't miss them! However, the opening band is a debuting local metal trio of sorts (the first band to debut at a Rosie metal night since Bring The Misery), and they're named General Striker, but what should you know about them? From what I understand, they're essentially Late & Loud minus singer/guitarist Brendan Christie (I take it he's unavailable on Thursday), so the other three members have formed this potentially one-off band to play this week. They have no band pages yet, so thanks to guitarist Jonathan Tiberi for the General Striker details! Will they have different material or a different sound than Late & Loud? There's only one way to find out, and that's to head to The Rosie in two nights! There's no cover charge, you must be 19 to attend, and it all starts at around 10:00 PM. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page!
Sounds like a solid night of metal as we've come to expect from the Rosie metal nights, so for some melodic & grimy death metal, plus your first (and only?) glimpse of General Striker, be at The Rosie THIS THURSDAY! Also for motivation to go: This is apparently the last Rosie metal night until 2012, as indicated on the Facebook event page linked above, meaning that the next Thursday of the bi-weekly schedule (December 22nd) is off. A reason for that isn't known, but I assume it's related to holiday commitments of some type, though I'll note that Christmas week is usually quite busy for concerts, so it strikes me as sort of odd. Stay tuned for more on this Thursday's metal night when we preview this weekend's metal/hard rock concerts!
Also for new concerts, it's the rebirth of Turner Up, whose new formation will debut THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at Feedback! As you may remember, the original Turner Up morphed into what is now Full Circle in March, officially changing their name in May, but longtime members Robert Brown & Scott McLurg have relaunched a new version of Turner Up with a much heavier sound than Full Circle currently employ, and they'll make their debut/return after seven months on Saturday night! Along with Robert on guitar and Scott on drums, the new Turner Up will see the return of frontwoman Krista Marshall (who last sang with the old Turner Up in February), along with new additions Jason Roy (Havadder) on second guitar and Travis Sharpe (Carbon Black) on bass, which should make for a very talented new lineup! A 9:00 PM start time is listed for their return (they'll likely start later than that though), you must be 19 to attend, and there's no announced cover charge. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and thanks to Scott for details on the new lineup!
It's great to finally see Turner Up back on an event marquee for a concert, and I know fans of their 2009-2011 run will be happy to see a return to heavier fare, so get ready to "turn 'er up" on Saturday night at Feedback! If I hear of any changes or updates, I'll let you guys know when we preview this weekend's metal and hard rock concerts on Thursday!
Next up, here's another new video of Sault Ontario deathcore band View To A Kill from bassist Adam Veale's dad John, who posted this video onto his YouTube channel yesterday. Also filmed at their headlining show at Feedback this past Saturday, it's of View To A Kill covering the Lamb of God song "Black Label", and they sound fairly good here, just like on the video of their Parkway Drive cover, but the lighting still seems off. Not a whole lot to add different, it's a solid cover and I prefer Lamb of God, so I approve! Check out the new video below, and stay tuned for more from View To A Kill as it all comes in!
And finally, here's this week's classic video! This week's notable for a lot of beginnings & ends in the local scene (the debuts of the new Turner Up & General Striker, and the final local shows from Splitshot, for example), but also new this weekend is the debut of Caveman Morrison's new lineup after a five month hiatus! I decided to focus this week's classic video on them this week, more specifically on new members, Redundant bandmates, and brothers James & Rick White. Before James re-entered the local music scene last year, he & Rick (along with his former Disciples of Rock bandmate Jamie Labreche) took part in a jam at a birthday party at The Sinton Tavern in Thessalon circa June 2009. The song they're jamming here was later named "Thin Air", as that's where the song came from that night, but it has a nice groove and great bass work from James! Rick's guitar playing flows nicely too, and Jamie shows his drum chops well, so it's a solid jam that would be interesting to see morphed into a fuller song! This video was uploaded onto Facebook by Jamie Labreche on June 22nd, 2009, and you can view the original video at http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=136058755760, though I did make some minor colour saturation edits after uploading the video to YouTube.
NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED!! All credit for this video goes to the White brothers and Jamie Labreche, as they did all the work with this video, I'm just sharing it with a wider audience like it deserves! It's a solid performance, so definitely give it a look below, and stay tuned for more on the return of Caveman Morrison this weekend!
That's all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews on Thursday, our next Defunct Local Band Profiles on Saturday, and much more news and notes to come! Thanks everyone!
Here's another news post for you guys today, including more videos from the Napalm Death concert, some interesting lineup news from a local band, and leading things off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so here's what you need to know! (Also, our new poll is up, but cause of this post, I'm postponing the results/intro post for our polls until tomorrow. Get voting!)
Sault Ontario metal quartet Late & Loud have announced their next live concert set, which will take place on October 26th at The Speak Easy at Algoma University! Over a month after their last mid-week set at Algoma's campus bar, they'll be back a week from tomorrow, as cited on their official Facebook page, so keep this show in mind! Full details on it are not out yet, so I can't say for certain if this show will have a themed pub night to go along with it, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a link to Halloween. As we don't know fuller details yet, I'll assume they'll be on at around 10:00 PM next Wednesday, bring cash in case there's a cover, and though I believe it will be a 19+ event, underage Algoma students may be able to attend, though I can't verify that. Check the above links for more details! Late & Loud have proven to be a talented and entertaining band since their inception last year, and you know their headlining shows are always gonna deliver, so keep their show at The Speak Easy in mind next week! Keep an eye out for updates on this and other Late & Loud shows as they come in!
Next up, here's more videos from Saturday's Napalm Death concert at Feedback Bar & Nightclub, and first, here's one actually from Napalm Death's set! Attendee Neno Jovanovic also filmed some of the British grindcore legends' set, and posted the video onto his YouTube channel yesterday. The video features Napalm Death playing their 1990 song "Suffer The Children" and 2005's "Silence Is Deafening" near the end of their set, and how do they sound? Very brutal, and that's good! Barney Greenway's singing is nice and aggressive, and even now, still more legible than some other death growlers, and the rest of the band sound blistering as you'd expect! Awesome drumming from Danny Herrera too! This makes me even more jealous that I had to miss this show over the weekend, but hey, family's important. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see them somewhere in the future! Here's Napalm Death rocking Feedback this past Saturday!
Neno also posted this video of Toronto death metal band Hallows Die from the show, where this talented quartet played their song "Fall From Heaven" and a new track from their upcoming album, so give it a look below as well! If you like your death metal a bit darker and more progressive, Hallows Die fit the bill well, and they sounded on form here! Kudos to Neno for getting all of these videos, hopefully he has some of Shit Liver & Wake too! Check out Hallows Die from Saturday night below, and stay tuned for more Napalm Death fallout as it comes in!
Finally for today, local metal cover band Caveman Morrison have announced the additions of Redundant bassist James White & drummer Rick White to their current lineup, replacing Jacques Marceau & Willie Bellerose. The White brothers were quietly added to the band's lineup recently on their Facebook group, though no explanation was announced as to why the changes occurred. That said, Rick White (also of Frightlight fame) returns to Caveman Morrison about 18 months after leaving Caveman Morrison's bass position early last year, though now on drums in lieu of his brother. The White brothers have proven to have good chemistry and a solid hard rock background, so they'll be assets to Caveman Morrison's new lineup! For the record, Redundant are luckily still together. Best of luck to Jacques and Willie in their next musical moves too, they both have talent and deserve to get in another band! As for when you can see the new Caveman Morrison lineup, I can't say for certain yet, but the band hasn't played live in over three months due to frontman Tym Morrison's busy solo schedule and (likely) the recent lineup switches, but with the White brothers in tow, it's only a matter of time before Caveman Morrison are back! Stay tuned for updates!
That's all for today, but stay tuned tomorrow for last month's poll results and all you should know about our current poll, so get voting, as it details with your opinions on a recent issue in the scene! Thanks everyone!
Our post marathon begins today with two news posts, and we'll start with a general one today! In this post, we have a new local sound company, the latest news from a Sault Michigan hard rock band, and this week's classic video, but first, here's another new video that I recently came across on YouTube!
On Monday, you may remember when I shown you guys a new high quality Garden of Bedlam concert video filmed by CML Productions' own Rick DellaVedova. Well, Rick's uploaded some more videos there, including a black and white version of the "New Rain" video from yesterday, with the colour version deleted. Why? I don't know, maybe he liked the black and white version more, but regardless, I changed the link on Monday's post to keep it accurate. Aside from that, Rick has uploaded a few new videos onto his YouTube channel for us to check out, including a short video of Crank Sound Distribution at work during a Garden of Bedlam show at Foggy Notions, and one cool classic video I'll be featuring later in the week, but there are three other Garden of Bedlam videos worth discussing! Two come from what looks like the sound checks for a Foggy Notions show last year, judging by the small crowd, crates on the floor, and visible daylight. They're of the band playing their songs "New Rain" & "Shallow", and everything looks and sounds real good! They also include some scattered discussions with the sound guys too, if you're interested in that!
The video I'm embedding here though is of Garden of Bedlam playing "Shallow" at last year's Rotaryfest, which sounds awesome and the crowd adds to it greatly! Rick gets some great angles of the band too, great work as always! Check the above links for all of Rick's new Garden of Bedlam videos, and here's "Shallow" from Rotaryfest!
Next up, here's some long awaited news from Sault Michigan hard rockers MK-Ultra, who we first told you guys about in January! Firstly, MK-Ultra have announced the addition of bassist Bill Spence to the band, reuniting him with his former Absolute & Riot! By Night bandmate Ben Huyck. Good choice, Bill & Ben had chemistry from the Absolute material I've heard! MK-Ultra are still looking for a rhythm guitarist and (maybe) a drummer to round out their lineup, so if you or someone you know are at all interested, shoot the band a message on Reverbnation, MySpace, or on their brand new Facebook page! Yes, they're on Facebook as of February 28th, where they've announced plans for a future CD of some type, a logo contest with a free CD as the prize for the winner, and plans for live shows beginning in June! They also hinted towards a new drummer already being found in their last Facebook update, saying that "Justin" will be laying down some drum tracks soon. My first thought was former Absolute drummer Justin Lawless, but I don't know enough to assume either way. Sounds good overall, hopefully MK-Ultra's plans fall into place, we'll be watching! Check out their material and band news at the above links!
Thirdly, here's a story I've pushed back far too long, as you guys (especially band members) should know about it! Half Past guitarist Alain Fletcher & bassist Arthur Lacasse have started a new live sound reinforcement company named Double A Sound, which will eventually give a more professional quality sound to concerts and events. They're not ready to go yet, but they have lots of gear ready to help make your band sound at it's best! When they officially start doing sound at local concerts, their rate will be $200 for shows featuring one or two bands, with an additional $50 for each added band from there (i.e. $250 for 3 bands, $300 for 4.) For all current details, visit their official Facebook page! I think this a great move by Al & Art to give bands another option for professional sound at their shows, and though I don't know how their prices and gear would stack up to Crank, for example, I have faith that Double A Sound will make their presence felt once they start doing sound at some local concerts! Check the above links for all you need to know from Double A Sound, and I'll keep you posted if some big updates come out!
And finally for today, here's this week's classic video! This is both our longest and oldest classic video so far, and it's a good one, so here's what you should know! As Half A Man are rocking The Bird in Sault Michigan on Sunday night, I found it fitting to post a video related to them again, but this time, of frontman Erik Rintamaki & drummer Mikey Bishop's mid-1990s local band Lower S.E.S.! Their posthumous MySpace page is full of 20 minute+ concert videos from their heyday, but I figured I'd start small for classic uploads with their 20 minute set from the battle of the bands that they won in 1994 at The Tumble Inn in Eckerman, Michigan! The video features their entire set, including their introduction, and it has the band's classic lineup covering Slayer's "South of Heaven" & "Seasons in the Abyss", Nirvana's "Rape Me", Pantera's "Becoming", Korn's "Blind", and their own original song "Bold"! I broke up the set into five videos (the Slayer covers are combined) and uploaded them to the SMS' YouTube channel earlier today, but you can check out the original unbroken video at http://myspace.com/lowersesband/videos/battle-of-the-bands/60189504. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED! Lower S.E.S. were a great band and they deserve wider exposure like this, even if it's been 16 years since they broke up!
This was filmed by an attendee on what appears to be a tape camcorder, so I apologize for the quality, which isn't as clear as it would be on a digital camera, but remember, this was 1994. The band sound good when they're clearly audible, and they have a good grasp on the covers, but it'd be cool to hear a few more originals, and more guitar solos from Andy Nash. His solo on the Pantera cover was nice, but I wish we'd have gotten them more! I hope we'll find more classic videos from the 1990s in the future, Lower S.E.S. deserve all the kudos in the world for posting these videos online! So here's their Slayer covers, but check the above links for the rest of this 20 minute battle of the bands set!
That's all for now, but stay tuned for a new Woods of Ypres-centric post later tonight chock full of new concert videos! Thanks everyone, and remember, we review Destroilet's EP TOMORROW!
