New Hard Rock Videos, A New Local Recording Studio, And More!!

With a lot of backlogged news items in our queue, I thought we should keep things rolling with a second news post today, before we dive into weekend concert previews, but check out some new show announcements and concert video below! We'll start this post with local alternative/hard rock trio The Din's fourth installment of their Cover of the Month series, as posted to their YouTube channel yesterday, as they covered The Killers' "While We Were Young"! Described as "a more production heavy tune", the video features two camera angles from the main performance, as well as insert footage of guitarist Tammy Hill playing guitar and keyboard in studio, and tracking material on a computer, plus segments with Mike singing layered background vocals. This is a well done cover that had a lot of work put into it, and Mike's singing is dramatic and deep, so give The Din's newest cover a look below!

Next up, here's some more videos from last week's Sky's the Limit mental health benefit concert at The Tech, courtesy of performers Electric Church, the new blues/classic rock outfit featuring young local guitarist Spencer Pine! Given the apparent 15 minute set times, their entire set was seemingly uploaded to Spencer's YouTube channel earlier this week, and within, the band covered Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble's "Pride & Joy", Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", and as embedded below, Hendrix's version of the blues standard "Rock Me Baby". The video descriptions confirm that Spencer is joined by Elijah Nielsen on bass, and Beau "The Beast" Whitfield on drums (though I'm not 100% on if I have Beau's last name right.) I've only seen Electric Church cover Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix, and I have yet to find an online page for this band, but they have a good sound & clear talent, and Spencer's vocals fit the material and are suitably melodic! Give Electric Chuch's videos a look!

Also today, here's some recent updates related to local alternative hard rock quartet Id Iota, who have finally posted a digital download copy of their debut EP "Maudlin Fair" onto their new Bandcamp page! Prospective fans may be inclined to buy "Maudlin Fair" here rather than in physical copies given that the price is just $4, down from $5 on CDs. It's great to see the option is now available, and you can stream it free there too, so check it out and consider buying it above! As well, their Bandcamp page revealed the name of guitar/producer Dustin Goodall's home recording studio (which wasn't given in physical copies), as it's called Unsalted Audio, repurposing the name of his short-lived concert promotion agency Unsalted Records. To formally kick off the studio's public launch, Dustin posted a lengthy press release onto the Musicians Wanted Facebook group on Monday to note that Unsalted Audio is the product of his "exceptionally high standards" of getting quality music recordings locally without breaking the bank.

As a result, Dustin is aiming to have his full studio operating by the fall, but is offering a special deal for the summer for prospective local musicians: $1,000 flat for a 10 song album with mixing and full production, which he says would cost 4 times that in a bigger city. Dustin's proven to be a very reliable producer (as also seen with AlgomA's split, and via mixing The Pixo Control's CD), and hopefully musicians take him up on Unsalted Audio's summer deal, so click here for full details on the studio's launch, and stay tuned for our "Maudlin Fair" review this month!

Lastly for today, here's three assorted shorter stories from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Troubled Mind drummer Mike Vincent has posted another new solo instrumental to his Bandcamp page, entitled "Sacred Sins"! The song has a fast paced metal groove and better audio quality than "Shoah" had, though what the 9/11 picture means towards the song isn't clear. Give Mike's new solo track a listen above!
  • We have restored defunct Sault Michigan/Japan metal project Mugwort to our band links, after discovering that their thought-deleted MySpace page was still up! The page's URL had been a string of numbers now used by another page, but it always had http://myspace.com/mugwort too, and I only realized that the other day. Be sure to follow Bob Helsten's other bands to see what he's been up to since!
  • In the newest episode of SooToday's music webseries Tuned with Donna Hopper, local artist, accordion player, and Ye Olde Mold Pickers alum Rihkee Strapp discusses her musical background & influences, upcoming open mic night at The Gore Street Cafe (footage of her opening for Dirtfight there is also included), and she also reiterated her recent desires to start a doom metal band with her singing lead vocals (message her above if you want in!) Solid feature of this multi-talented artist, so give it a look above, but note that Donna is nowhere to be seen, with the episode resembling Shaw TV's music pieces as a result.

That's definitely all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews next! Thanks everyone!

The Rest Of The Halloween Weekend Hard Rock/Punk Concert Previews, And More!!

Happy Halloween, everyone! Our busy Halloween weekend continues today with our last previews of the weekend's concerts, including the known heavier Sault Michigan shows and a special Sunday nighter to cap the season with, but we also have some assorted recent notes at post's end. Now, here's what you need to know!

Newer Rudyard, Michigan hard rock quintet Exiled will provide their own Halloween entertainment TONIGHT when they headline a "Monster Bash" at the Dondee Lanes in Sault Michigan, marking their debut at this venue! Announced earlier this month on their Facebook page, this will be Exiled's first concert appearance since sharing the stage with Ricochet at the Savoy on the 10th, and though public information on the Halloween events to be had tonight are minimal, I would expect costumes being encouraged, at the very least, and who knows what other seasonal perks will be in store! Of course, Exiled's own blend of covers (and experienced lineup featuring Monkey's Uncle, NoXcape, and Division of Sanity alumni) should entertain fans at the Dondee, so don't miss out if you're across the river! Like at other recent Dondee events, there will be an earlier start time of 8:00 PM, no announced cover charge, and a 21+ age limit. Click here for more details on the Monster Bash, and hopefully some live video footage of Exiled turns up!

Also this weekend on the American side of the border, Kinross classic/hard rock trio Banned will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Fresh off of a road trip to Engadine this past weekend, these will surprisingly be Banned's first stops at St. Ignace's Kewadin branch of the year, and as you'd expect, there will be some type of Halloween theme going down tonight, so bring your costumes! Even without the seasonal setting, Alex, Wayne, and Don should have an entertaining variety of originals & covers to take in this weekend to help end one month and bring in another, so keep their shows in mind as well if you're in the E.U.P.! Both tonight & tomorrow's shows have no announced cover charge, 21+ age limits, and 9:00 PM start times. For more details, visit the above links, and here's Banned covering C.C.R. earlier this year!

Finally for this weekend's hard rock and punk concert previews, local concert promoter J.D. Pearce's final show in his "Punkrocktober" run of seasonal shows goes down THIS SUNDAY at The Rockstar Bar, which may be after Halloween, but better late than never! Headlining on Sunday are Montreal psychobilly favourites The Brains, who return to our area almost a year after their well received 2013 show here, and if you like your rockabilly with a large infusion of punk and attitude, you should take to The Brains' return again! Opening for them on Sunday are Montreal punk quartet Boids, whose own more traditional blend of punk rock should serve them and fans well, so don't miss their set either, as they have good energy and talent to go around! Though a local opening band is still "to be announced" as per the Facebook event page, a personal Facebook post by frontman Rob Speers says that local funk/hard rock quartet The Elements will be opening, and they'd be a good fit here, so keep an eye out for them!

This 19+ concert goes down Sunday night at around 9:00 PM, and there is a $10 cover charge. For more details, check the above links! After seeing three shows in three days, I can't guarantee if I'll be at this one, but fans of psychobilly and good old fashioned punk rock should not miss out on The Brains & Boids THIS SUNDAY, so check above for more info, and here's The Brains live in 2012!

We'll close today with some assorted recent updates from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Veteran Sault Ontario drummer Mike Severin is looking for local musicians who'd be interested in joining an old school punk band that he intends to launch, who would cover bands like The Clash, The New York Dolls, and Social Distortion. He's looking specifically for a singer and/or guitarist (no word on if he has a bassist already), and interested parties must be able to jam one night a week. If you're interested, message Mike at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post on Tuesday!
  • I've deleted the defunct Sault Michigan/Japan metal project Mugwort from our inactive band links, as their MySpace (and only online) page's link now redirects to an unrelated person's personal account, so it looks like it was taken down. Mugwort weren't around long and didn't post much, but follow singer Bob Helsten's similar local bands like I.S.O.M. and End of Existence for more material!
  • I've replaced defunct Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Nixxon Dixxon's link on the site from their now-deleted Facebook page to their still active MySpace page, which still has substantial concert photos to warrant the link's inclusion on our listings, despite it's older studio cover songs having been pulled a few years back. It'd be cool to see Nixxon Dixxon reunite at some point, but follow 415E and The London Gentlemen for members' current work!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for our review of last night's Devil's Night show at The Oddfellows Hall in our next post (if all goes well), and we'll see you guys at The Algonquin Pub TONIGHT for The Halloween Party with Frightlight! Thanks everyone!

Defunct Local Band Profile Series: SIGHdEFECT & Mugwort

It's that time of the month again, as it's time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! As always, this monthly feature post outlines and profiles a defunct or inactive local metal/hard rock band, and to avoid any bias, the band(s) in question is/are picked via random selection. That said, for a second time in three months, the band I initially chose didn't have substantial enough information to populate a full post on it's own, so I've added another band with minimal info to fill things out, and for the first time, a two band profile in this series is split among the Twin Saults! So, what should you know about this month's profiled bands? Read on below! (Updated on August 27th, 2013)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SIGHdEFECT

Genre: Metal/Hard Rock/Punk

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Members: (E-mail me at robertfigures@outlook.com if you know of any omissions or errors to their lineup!)

Justin Langlois (Redundant, The Thrill Junkies), vocals
Adam Smith, guitar
Jason Bourcier (Winkstinger, Fitswitch), bass
Matt Waples (Destroilet, Stutzgummer), drums

Audio/Video: SIGHdEFECT reportedly were working on a debut album circa early 2002, but I'm not certain if it was released. Lyrics for 5 songs are also posted on the band's official website, which were all likely to have been on their CD. That said, no media of theirs exists in a publically available form, but most of the band's members have recorded and released original material in recent years with their later bands. If I had to guess, I'd assume that Jason Bourcier's musical output is the closest to SIGHdEFECT in sound, but I could be wrong.

Info/Analysis: Pronounced "side effect", SIGHdEFECT was launched by drummer Matt Waples in late 2001, and they quickly gained local success in the early 2000s, including opening for Chore during their run. Influenced by bands ranging from Metallica & Slipknot to Limp Bizkit & Coal Chamber, they played a heavy metal style with a "creepy feel" to it, even comparing their concerts to watching a very creepy movie. Information is largely scarce on SIGHdEFECT, but their website was last updated in 2002, and I presume they dissolved by 2003. However, most of the band's members remained active in local punk & metal acts, so go check them out! I'm curious to hear SIGHdEFECT (especially for Justin singing heavier stuff), and the members definitely have the pedigrees to rock pretty hard, but I wonder what happened to them? Give their stuff a look at the above links, and hopefully some material emerges down the road!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mugwort

Genre: Metal

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan & Kyoto, Japan

Musicians: (This information is incomplete. E-mail me at robertfigures@hotmail.com if you have any additions or corrections!)
Bob "Orb Hearthstone" Helsten (Powerslug, Toast), vocals
Da-Ko (Grin Outside, Grin Inside), all instruments

Info/Analysis: Little info is posted online about Mugwort. Only visibly active in 2008, they're presumably named after the mugwort plant, and the image used on their MySpace page is from the anime series Cowboy Bebop. They're also friends with a few local metal acts, including a user named Andy Bord with the same display picture. According to conversations with singer Bob Helsten, this was a studio project he briefly did with Japanese metal musician Da-Ko, who has some very solid metal work you can check out at the above links. Likewise, Mugwort's only posted song, entitled "Hunters Moon", is also very promising! A lengthy epic metal track similar to his earlier work in I.S.O.M. & End of Existence, it shows off Bob's melodic vocals well while also including some nice orchestral elements and a some affecting softer parts mixed in with very heavy riffs and a really cool guitar solo! It'd be nice to see Bob & Da-Ko revive Mugwort, but for now, check out "Hunter's Moon" below, and more from both of them at the above links!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's profiles! Next month will be the first month of our new format for post division between the twin Saults, which will be like this for each month: 1-1-1-1-1, due to a growth in Sault Michigan band proportion, so things are more even, but we'll still occasionally profile two Sault Ontario bands consecutively. So which band is being profiled next month? Once again, we'll be profiling two, as once again, the first band I randomly picked didn;t have any material, so I've added a Sault Michigan band in a similar situation to round things out.

So for our final Defunct Local Band Profile of 2011, we'll look at defunct Sault Ontario metal band Garage Inc. (featuring future members of Blues Harvest, Thin Ice, and No Shadows Cast) and defunct Sault Michigan metal band Savage Roar (formerly Shishiku.) Hopefully you guys like them when they go up on or around December 10th! That's all for now, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews later tonight! Thanks everyone!

Three New Local Metal/Hard Rock Acts & Three New Reverbnation Pages!!

Before we get to news as usual, I wanted to wish you guys a happy Remembrance/Veterans Day. Pay respect to your veterans today and wear your poppies with pride! Now this isn't something we see often, but I actually have THREE newly discovered local metal/hard rock projects to share with you guys in this second post today! We have a local solo artist, a brand new band, and a "mystery" project that we could use info on to share, as well as some local Reverbnation pages never featured before on the SMS, so let's get right to everything! We'll go through each new band in alphabetical order.

The first new local act that I discovered recently is a local solo artist named Mike Haggith. Originally from Windsor, Mike has a long history in both solo and band work dating back to his early work in the late 1990s. He's primarily a guitarist, but also supplies bass and vocal tracks on his original material. His band credits include such Windsor-based groups as The Thorns and S.C.A.R., among many others. I won't go into too much detail on his specific bands, as they aren't locally based, but Mike is personally based out of Sault Ontario at present, and continually records and releases solo material along with his bands. This may seem surprising by volume, but Mike has recorded and released over 100 albums since 2005 in his different projects! Over 40 of these are solo albums, but I should note that I don't believe most of these have been sold as "albums". I'm not sure how distribution of most of them was accomplished, but I only see one ("Ace" from 2009) for sale on any of his pages. I think his albums are distributed similarly to the albums from Sault Michigan solo artist Mike Libertoski, but I could be wrong. Mike's local connections are overshadowed by his Windsor past, but his Reverbnation page does indicate that he is among the artists who work with fellow local musician Mike Cliffe's Audio Fumes venue, and it lists an upcoming solo open mic performance at The Outback at Sault College on Wednesday!

Mike Haggith's genre of music is described as "alternative/grunge/rock", which is about right for what he plays! Many of his internet pages, including ones on Reverbnation, Facebook, YouTube, Soundclick, and ImRadio feature many of his more recent solo songs recorded through his independent label Rotten Records, and I have to say, I'm digging a bunch of them! His style isn't too experimental, but he tries different things and different styles in his solo songs, and there's enough heaviness to go around! His singing voice is deep and in control, and his riffing and notation are pretty good! The production quality varies greatly depending on the album each song is from, so make note of that. On songs like "The Institution" and "The 113 Suite", he makes good use of heavy darker tones, and he also has some affecting slower songs too, like "The Day You Left Me"! But really, this is the kind of project that will have a little something for everyone, and you'll have to browse his pages to find a song that suits your preferences! I've done some cherry picking and found some favourites of my own, I recommend you guys check Mike's stuff out for yourself at the above links and see what's there! He's got some real talent, and maybe a review of his "Ace" album is in the cards for the near future!

Secondly, here's a project that I, frankly, know next to nothing about. In recent Google crawling for Sault Michigan concerts, I came across a project from across the river named Mugwort. Now, this page has very little to speak of. The page was launched in December 2008, there are seven friends, one wall post, and little else. I also know that mugwort is a type of plant, but that's all. There's just one thing that made this worth posting on the SMS: A song! This artist or band posted a song titled "Hunter's Moon", and it's honestly of good quality! Solid melodic death metal kind of tune, with decent production and good singing, and a nice orchestral tinge! The singer sounds a bit like Orb Hearthstone of End of Existence fame, but no musicians in this project are listed. Definitely check this song out, it's a surprising discovery, if nothing else! But who are/is Mugwort? The page is friends with Integrated System of Machines and Clownsack bassist Slappy, but does that mean anything as to the members? Mugwort's profile picture is also the profile picture used by "Andy Bord", a MySpace friend who also has many connections to local band members. Is Andy in Mugwort, or just a friend? If someone out there can help, e-mail me at robertfigures@hotmail.com, and check out the above links for more!

The final new band that we have today is the only band that is actually "new" in terms of when it was formed. They are The Quims, and they're a new band featuring three local music veterans, including Scary Uncles frontman Justin Langlois, Frightlight guitarist Rick White, and Browbeat bassist James White! A drummer is not listed as of yet. Justin and Rick teamed up in the defunct local bands Scattered and The Pisstanks, whereas the White brothers recently paired up in a recent incarnation of Browbeat, so they are quite familiar with each other! The Quims have a listed genre of "raunch hillbilly redneck rock n' roll", and list some interesting influences and likes on their Facebook page that suggest a grimy Southern influenced hard rock sound! Of course, we don't know for sure what they sound like yet, but as their newest wall post says, they're coming, be patient! I have a feeling that The Quims might be close in sound to The Pisstanks judging by the descriptions on The Pisstanks' MySpace page, but we'll have to see! Check out the above links for more, and I'll keep you posted as updates roll in from the Sault's new raunch n' roll band! And yes, The Quims, Mike Haggith, and Mugwort are now in the band listings on the SMS!

Closing today's post are three newly discovered pages on Reverbnation, that I discovered in the same browsing session that I found Mike Haggith in. Let's go through these quickly in alphaebtical order, as none have anything majorly different from their primary pages. The links to the pages are in each band's name.:
  • I can't believe I never mentioned this on here, but local punk/metal band Destroilet are on Reverbnation! The page hasn't been updated in months, but they're there, so become a fan today! Little is there that we haven't seen before from their other pages, so keep that in mind.
  • Sault Michigan hard rockers Elipzis also have a new Reverbnation page, which is updated! It lists them as being from the Sault & Grand Rapids, and it features photos, a bio, upcoming shows, and four original song samples! Nothing too different from their other pages, but become a fan today!
  • Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison has launched his own solo Reverbnation page as well! It features an updated biography, all 10 songs from his "Solo Project" album, and a bit more! This is the newest of the three pages, so become a fan and stay in the loop!
That's all for today, but stay tuned this weekend for more news, my Garden of Bedlam concert review, and more! Thanks everyone!
