The First Of This Weekend's Hard Rock/Punk Concert Previews!!

Let's kick off this weekend's hard rock & punk concert previews today (we'll touch on the Zombie Walk TOMORROW), but first, just a note regarding a band listed as playing at The Rapids Lounge this weekend on Kewadin Casino's entertainment page, that being defunct local hard rock band RamWagon. It's been established that RamWagon disbanded earlier this year, and newer bands featuring members of theirs (like Highway 63) have not indicated that they're playing in the Soo this weekend, so unless we hear otherwise, that was probably an accidental listing. Now, here's this weekend's heavier non-zombie walk concert previews! (Updated at 3:16 PM)

A stacked night of punk rock mayhem goes down TONIGHT when Vancouver punk quartet The Rebel Spell make their long awaited return to the Soo for a headlining set at The Moose Lodge! Last seen via two separate appearances here in March 2011, this will be (at least) this politically charged and very entertaining band's fifth appearance in the Soo, and with new songs from their newest CD "Last Run" to unleash, fans new and old alike should be in for a good time with The Rebel Spell! Local support will include hardcore punk sextet Destroilet (though without new co-vocalist Brent Ellis, as per his personal Facebook page), local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades, and local alternative/grunge trio The Pixo Control (in their first appearance at a "Johnny Pints Presents..." concert), and all are fitting choices to open, all in their own Moose Lodge debuts! Promoted by Jack Spades frontman J.D. Pearce (who opened for The Rebel Spell with Fitswitch in 2006), this ALL AGES concert kicks off tomorrow at 6:00 PM, and admission is $10 at the door with no announced advance tickets.

Also, as the first of J.D.'s Halloween season concert slate, there will be a best costume contest tomorrow as well, with the winner getting a Jack Spades merchandise pack and a pass to one of his upcoming concerts, so keep that in mind too if you have your costume ready! This is a great way to kick off the Halloween concert season for punk fans in the area, especially if you're in the east end, under 19, or have missed The Rebel Spell in the last 3+ years, so don't miss tonight's show, and here's The Rebel Spell live in 2012!

Also this weekend, Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will return once again to The Harp Bar & Grill with his 47th consecutive weekend of acoustic hard rock entertainment there TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Just over a month away from a full year at the former Madison's Pub with no weekends off, Tym's entertaining and prolific unplugged cover sets continue to be a reliable source of entertainment on weekends, and I'm sure things will keep up nicely for tomorrow's hosted jam night and Saturday's full solo concert! Admission for both nights should be free, you must be 19 to attend, and there's a likely 10:00 PM start time both nights. For more details, visit the above links! Moving to Sault Michigan and surrounding areas to close this post, we'll head to St. Ignace, where Charlevoix metal trio Peril will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at their Kewadin Casino for shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! This will be Jeff, Adam, and Brooks' second Eastern U.P. concert weekend in three weeks (following Soo Kewadin stops on October 10th & 11th) and their first St. Ignace shows in almost three months, so while Peril haven't been away from our area long, fans of their classic metal covers should be out in full force once again this weekend, especially those not from Sault Michigan proper! As usual for Kewadin Casino bar events, a 9:00 PM start time is likely, you must be 21 to attend, and there's no announced cover charge. For more details, check the above links! Peril should deliver another fun & heavy night of covers for their fans, so be sure to keep their shows this weekend in mind, and here they are covering Ozzy Osbourne!



Finally for today's previews, Sault Michigan hard rock quartet 415E will make rare appearances outside of the regional Kewadin Casino branches when they rock the Dondee Lanes in the Soo TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Fresh off of last weekend's debut with their new lineup (now featuring bassist Mitch Goetz and drummer Tony Hubbard), we don't hear of too many regular Dondee concerts from bands that fit on the SMS anymore, but 415E should deliver their own fun entertainment via their Van Halen-inspired originals and covers this weekend, and if you like the Dondee, we have a Halloween weekend show to announce there in the next while as well, so watch out for that too! As for this weekend, 415E are on at special earlier times of 8:00 PM both nights, though admission prices aren't announced, and you must be 21 to attend. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The Rebel Spell & Havadder) And New Videos!!

Today's post is stacked with some more interesting local hard rock news, including a new song from an upcoming album and two LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for the Halloween season, but we also have an archive video to share, so here's what you should know! (Updated at 2:59 PM)

Vancouver punk quartet The Rebel Spell will return to our neck of the woods on Thursday, October 23rd for a headlining ALL AGES concert at The Moose Lodge! While the Facebook event page hasn't confirmed the venue yet, that was confirmed via the official poster on the "Sault Ste. Marie All Ages" group by Destroilet's Mike Hull, so there's your source. No strangers to the Soo, this will be The Rebel Spell's (at least) fifth local stop, following 2006's Propagandhi show and headlining dates here in November 2007 & twice in March 2011, and in the midst of their tour supporting their new CD "Last Run", look for a solid night of energetic, up-tempo, and politically charged punk rock action! Local openers will include hardcore punk quintet Destroilet, punk/metal standouts Jack Spades, and newly added alternative/hard rock trio The Pixo Control in their Moose Lodge debuts, and Jack Spades are fitting too given that promoter J.D. Pearce opened for The Rebel Spell with Fitswitch 8 years ago! The"All Ages" group post above implied that J.D. was looking for one more underage opening band, so just in case, message Johnny Pints on Facebook for info!

A $10 cover charge will be in effect for this LICENSED & ALL AGES show, and doors will open at 9:00 PM. For more details, visit the above links! This should be an entertaining concert for punk and metal fans alike, and it's another awesome concert addition to J.D.'s stacked Halloween concert slate (joining Gob, The Brains, and his own annual Halloween party), so don't sleep on this show either as the month progresses! Also in new concerts for the end of this month, local classic/hard rock cover quartet Havadder will step outside of The Rednecks Saloon for the first time since their Rock 'N Roar battle set in Spanish earlier this year, as they'll be rocking out on Saturday, October 31st at..... Studio 10?! Yes, the local strip club at 89 Hudson Street appears to be throwing their hat into the ring for live band bookings, as the official Facebook event page implies that Havadder will be the first band to ever play there (and no, I don't know if the "adult entertainment" will be happening concurrently with their set.) As this is a Halloween night show, costumes are encouraged, and there will be a contest for the best one, so keep that angle in mind! Located at the corner of Hudson and Queen Street West near the bridge, there's a 10:00 PM start time and 19+ age limit in effect, and I have no idea if Studio 10 tends to have cover charges. This is an unexpected announcement, especially given Havadder's local exclusivity with The Rednecks Saloon since late last year, but Studio 10's not terribly far from there. It'll be interesting to see how this goes over, but they'll have added competition too, as the Halloween weekend is traditionally busy. Stay tuned if there's updates though!

We'll close today with new videos, including a new song posting from local grunge/alternative quartet Haggith's upcoming concept album "Apocalypse II"! Recently revealed to be on pre-order in the near future for $5 (source here), the newest song from it is oddly titled "Tribute to Mike Haggith", and fittingly, Mike does sing lead vocals on this song, with guitarist Daniel Horton handling drums and bass for it too. Uploaded to their YouTube channel on Saturday, it's basically a mix of Haggith's sound and Mike Haggith's solo material, if that makes sense, but fans should dig it, so give it a listen!



Finally, here's one more Havadder note, courtesy of their last unshared archive video from YouTube, again courtesy of their Turner Up-hybrid lineup from January 2012! Filmed by an attendee at what's now The Rednecks Saloon (then The Nicolet Tavern), this was uploaded to their then-sister band's YouTube channel, though Turner Up themselves were never featured in a video there. Though untitled, this is of Havadder covering Collective Soul's "Cumbersome", and while the description downplays the audio quality, it's not that bad (if anything, the lighting affects the video more), and the guys pull off a solid version of this 1990s rock classic! SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Motion Carried), Woods Of Ypres News, And More!!

This is a busy weekend at the SMS! I have enough news for two very full posts, so I actually divided them up equally rather than shoving all the important news into one post, just to keep each one's value the same! Just in case you're wondering, we have news on Destroilet, Duane Roy's next book, what happened to SooNews.ca, some new pages for two local bands, and yes, the preview of Monday night's Buckcherry concert, so look out for all of that tomorrow! Today, we have a pile of news from Woods of Ypres, lineup updates for three upcoming concerts, and kicking things off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!! Here's what you need to know!

Just eight days after rocking the local stage at Foggy Notions, Vancouver punk rockers The Rebel Spell will be back in town THIS TUESDAY for a short notice concert at The Roosevelt Hotel! Why mention it on the SMS though? Because Motion Carried are opening! Yes, the new local punk/hard rock trio featuring members of The Scary Uncles & Frightlight will make their first live concert appearance since last week's "secret show" at Coch's Corner as openers for The Rebel Spell on Tuesday! A second opening band is planned but has yet to be officially announced. There will be a $5 cover charge on Tuesday, but you can knock $1 off the admission by bring a vegan food donation. As always for Rosie concerts, this will be a 19+ affair, and a 9:00 PM start time is advertised. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Sounds like fun, hopefully I can make it if my school requirements are kind to me! I still wanna hear how Motion Carried sound, and The Rebel Spell are a great Canadian punk group, so make it out if you can! Check the above links for more!

Secondly today, here's some brand new video footage from Woods of Ypres' local show at The Rosie on Thursday! This is of the band playing their song about Sault Ontario, "Your Ontario Town Is A Burial Ground", and this was actually recorded and posted by this concert's promoter, Rich Moreland on his YouTube channel! He's not listed by name on the channel, but Rich uses the username "bloodthirsty213" on MySpace too. The video's good quality, but the audio isn't fantastic, luckily you can make out everything though! He was filming nearer to Shane Madden on the stage, and at points, you can see both of Woods' own camcorders filming on the left in the front rows. Good stuff, hopefully we see some more Woods of Ypres concert photos and videos online soon! We'll get back to Woods of Ypres in a second, as there's a lot from them to cover today, but first, here's a pair of lineup additions for two upcoming concerts! Firstly, Montreal pop punk band Skepsis have been added to the lineup for Thursday's punk night at The Roosevelt Hotel featuring RedD Monkey and "blue Chinese metal crash punk" mainstays Sykotyk Rampage! Remember, Skepsis were originally scheduled for a show last month at The Rosie, but wouldn't end up being a part, but they're coming for sure on Thursday! Not metal by any stretch, but seeing as they're playing with Sykotyk Rampage, it warrants a mention here. Click here for full details! Secondly, one replacement band has been found for April 9th's massive all ages concert at The Oddfellows Hall, as local classic metal quartet Late & Loud (pictured) have officially been added to the show, replacing SBD in the 6:45-7:30 PM slot between Shit Liver & The Bear Hunters. I imagined they could be a replacement band if need be, good to see them at an all ages show, with advance notice, AND with other bands for a change! No word yet on who's replacing The Fury in the 10:30-11:15 PM slot, or on Bring The Fallen's status, but I'll keep you guys posted!

We have one more lineup note for an upcoming concert, with more as well, and this takes us right back to Woods of Ypres! While we've heard little official statements on their next local concert on May 13th, I'll tell you what I know and have found out, with huge thanks to promoter Rich Moreland for this info! Firstly, I can confirm that one of the opening bands will be Toronto melodic death metal quartet Hallows Die, who do have a slight Woods of Ypres connection, as they worked with David Gold's old Will of the Ancients bandmate Colin Attlesey for the production of their first LP. They're a solid band, lots of nice experimental touches and brutal riffing, they'll do great at this show with their "twisted soundtrack" for our twisted world! Check them out at this location! Now to the question of "Where is this concert taking place?" Woods of Ypres said it was at The Rosie on their official forum, yet Hallows Die said it will be at The Vibe Lounge (Rich initially confirmed this with me last month too), so where is this show actually taking place? Foggy Notions! Rich confirmed this with me on Thursday night at the Woods concert, and though I don't know why the show was shifted from The Vibe to Foggy's, the music will sound great no matter where it is! Stay tuned for more on this May 13th concert as it comes in!

Finally for today, we close with some more assorted Woods of Ypres news from the last little while! Firstly, a blog entry was posted on Earache Records' official news blog on March 4th which features the first half of a lengthy write-up from David Gold about the writing and conception of "Woods IV: The Green Album"! He explains when he started getting ideas, what happened to the "Woods III" era lineup, and why he left Canada for South Korea, and the feelings and images he picked up while in the far East. Interesting to see his thoughts put like this, it's clear he put a lot into "Woods IV", and we haven't even read part 2 yet! Check out the article at the above links! As well, the band have announced four more out of town dates on their tour legs, including a March 22nd show (same day as the "Woods IV" rerelease) in Montreal, a special May 6th concert in Chicago, and concerts in Winnipeg and Regina on May 15th and 16th after they leave Ontario in their Western Canada tour leg! Though not local shows, you can find out more on all of these dates (and all their previously-announced concerts) at their official Facebook page! And yes, as always, these dates are listed in our out of town concert listings on your right!

That's Chester Concert Review & Two Concert Previews!!

Well, I promised I'd make it up to you for missing the Rosie metal night on Thursday by hitting a Saturday nighter, and that's exactly what I did! For the first time ever, I went to Docks to check out That's Chester, so my review of that show will lead off this post! We'll cap it with previews of two metal shows taking place tonight and tomorrow night, so stay tuned for those! Now, on to the review!

Firstly, here's some of my initial impressions on Docks Riverfront Grill, a concert spot I'd never previously been inside. Very fancy and higher end than I expected, with lots of fancy lighting and TVs. Fairly big too, but the stage area isn't as big as I expected it would be. I should note that there WAS a cover last night, $4, which I assume is standard for Docks most nights (this is why I said there was no ANNOUNCED cover charge), and believe it or not, you had to get a bracelet before getting in! I'm not used to that for a bar. The environment seemed a bit "high level" at first, but once That's Chester kicked into gear, things relaxed quickly. One thing that caught my eye really heavily was the contrast between the concert stage and everywhere else in the bar. The stage area's woodgrain and rather small apart from a dance floor area, and with a classic hard rock band playing on it, things flowed well in that area. However, the rest of the bar's very high end and attracts a largely different looking crowd than you think That's Chester would typically get. It felt like they were playing to the wrong audience, or they were at the wrong bar. If you would have seen guys in suits and well dressed ladies dancing to the music, you'd see what I mean. Still, it's a very nice bar, and I'm not opposed to returning!

When I got to Docks, That's Chester had regretfully already begun, but I didn't miss very much, I was there just a shade after 11:00 PM! For my first live impressions of them in action, I can gladly say they were as good as I figured they would be! Their setlist comprised of a large assortment of classic and hard rock songs, everything from AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, and Velvet Revolver to Wings, Pink Floyd, Bryan Adams, and The Tragically Hip! Nice to see them throwing some Canadian content in their sets, that's always welcome! Muscially, I can't complain too much, all five members of That's Chester are very talented musicians and there was no major flubs of the included songs! Greg Simpson (of Stiffler's Mom & Bone Yard fame) proves to be a very good frontman when he emerges from the drumkit, with lots of energy and enthusiasm, even jumping into the crowd to mingle with fans mid-song! His range isn't up to the task of some of their songs, but his tone and melodies were spot on for most of the night! Of the rest of the band, Ric Datson's drumming was awesome all night, and the chimes were a nice touch! Aubrey Falls is a very good bassist (though he was mixed a bit high in the first set), I love how Gabe Tessaro incorporated an Angus Young skip into their "Jailbreak" cover, and his and Eugene Orlando's guitar work were very impressive!

It's the little things that add up in a concert like this, and That's Chester delivered those! Their on-stage banter was amusing, and they included some fun moments throughout the night! Remember, when That's Chester cover ZZ Top's "La Grange", it's tequila time, for example! There was even a birthday song for an attendee that was "off colour", to state it mildly. It was odd seeing well dressed fans dancing to classic hard rock, but they were having a good time, and you can't ask for much more than that! I like how they didn't group songs into sets either, they played a mix of everything throughout the night, giving everyone a little something throughout the night! It was nice to finally see That's Chester live, their tequila fueled brand of hard rock was basically what I expected, and I hope to see them live again! I did get pictures, but excuse the quality, I had to take them on a picture stabilization setting with no flash because of the windows behind the stage, which made normal photos look too dark. Now to a pair of concert previews for shows taking place over the next two days, as we make one last push for you guys to make it out and rock out in style! Firstly, there's a big metal show TONIGHT at The Vibe Lounge on Goulais Avenue (nice to see more shows there), so here's who's playing tonight! Headlining is Fredericton, New Brunswick progressive metal outfit We, The Undersigned, who'll look to devastate the local fans with their brand of extreme hard hitting metal in this stop on their "Tonight, We Dine..." tour! The vocals are unique for their style, and they sound ripe for a moshpit, check them out at this location! Two local openers are primed for this show as well, including grimecore trio Shit Liver in their first of two concerts on consecutive days (more in a second) and extreme metal quintet WinkStinger, who are 100% confirmed to open now! They'll fit well as openers, especially WinkStinger, so don't miss the local content to start tonight's show! There is NO cover tonight, you must be 19 to attend, and everything starts after 9:00 PM! Sounds like a great concert, but I'll sadly have to skip it, as it's a school night, and I have a lot of homework to get done tonight to boot. Rock out for me though, it'll be worth your time to go! Finally, here's Shit Liver's second show in a two day span, as they back up a prominent Canadian punk band in their local return! The band is Vancouver's own The Rebel Spell, who are no strangers to Sault Ste. Marie! I remember seeing them on Halloween night five years ago, and they were awesome then, so I imagine little will change! Hard hitting punk rock with lots of attitude, you should enjoy them! Of course, Shit Liver are opening with their grimy and crusty brand of death metal, but local ska punk rockers Free Beer are also opening, in a rare concert appearance of their own! If you've been a fan of Free Beer's since their 2007 inception, then you'll wanna see them for sure tomorrow night! There will be a $5 cover for this show, you must be 19 to attend, and it all starts at 9:00 PM or later! Sounds like a fun show itself, though I do have a night class tomorrow, so making this one could be tight. Check the above links for more, hopefully a big crowd of punk fans shows up! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Turner Up, That's Chester, And Shit Liver), A New Local Band, And A New Music Video!!

If there was ever a post on the SMS that could be defined as "packed", then this is it! Today, we have THIRTEEN LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for the next two months, the long awaited new music video from a local metal band, and kicking things off, a new local band! We have loads of stuff to come in the next few days, including some SMS housekeeping notes, our classic weekly video (don't worry, I haven't forgotten it!), and much more, so stay tuned! Let's kick off today's stacked post with the new local band!

I just came across this band the other day, and they are Beyond The Surface, a hard rock quartet from nearby Pickford, Michigan! Comprised of area high schoolers, the band features Rhiannan Sibbald on lead guitar, Eli Reilly (formerly of Unleashed) on rhythm guitar, bassist Alec Firack, and drummer Isaac Leach. They don't appear to have a singer at present, but 2009 International Idol winner Danielle Petingalo sang with the band at at least one prior gig. Since their inception in December 2010, they have won the"Best Band" award at a Rudyard High School talent show, and according to their most recent Facebook page update, they were auditioning for a talent show in Cheboygan the other weekend. Their influences range from Metallica, Demon Hunter, and Pantera to August Burns Red, Paramore, and Evanescence, which are quite the diverse group of bands! I have no real idea of how they sound as a band (I've found no video), but they seem promising enough for their age if they've won talent show awards. No word on if they're connected at all to Joey Beairl's Guitar Studio rock camp, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some link. I'll keep you guys posted if I hear more on Beyond The Surface, but check all of the above links for more!

Now to LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, and we'll go in chronological order for these shows. Firstly, local classic hard rock cover band Turner Up have scheduled 10 more concert dates through March! Guitarist Robert Brown confirmed all of these dates in a new post on their Facebook group, which also includes this weekend's Docks shows and next weekend's Bon Soo 70's/80's night at The Nicolet Tavern that we previously reported. For the new shows, they'll return to The Rockstar Bar on February 18th and 19th, with shows at The Roosevelt Hotel on the 25th and 26th. In March, they have three concert weekends scheduled, including March 4th and 5th at The Nicolet Tavern, March 11th and 12th at The Roosevelt Hotel, and finally, March 18th and 19th at The Rockstar Bar! All shows should have 10:30 PM start times, none have announced cover charges, and in all cases, you must be 19 to enter. Sounds good, it's great to see the bookings rolling in for Turner Up! Stay tuned for updates from this frequently seen live act as it comes in!

Meanwhile, another similar local band returns to the stage for another pair of concerts in March! That band is That's Chester, who will return to Docks Riverfront Grill on March 4th and 5th for a pair of classic hard rock-filled nights of music! The band haven't announced these shows yet on their pages, but Docks' event page on their official website confirms these upcoming dates, so if the venue says they're on, I wouldn't doubt them! I find it odd that they list That's Chester as a dance band in some show listings there and as just a live band in others, I guess it depends who you ask. I assume these have 10:00 PM start times, no cover charge, and 19+ age limits. These and their shows next weekend at Docks are the only confirmed That's Chester dates that I know of on the horizon, so make note of them! They're a talented band of local music veterans, so definitely consider going if you can! I'll keep you posted if I hear more!

Finally for new shows, this is one I'm sure you punk fans have been aware of for a few weeks, but now it graces the SMS thanks to one of the opening bands! Vancouver punk mainstays The Rebel Spell are making their long awaited return to Sault Ontario on March 7th for what should be an entertaining night of music at Foggy Notions! I remember seeing and enjoying The Rebel Spell on Halloween night in 2006 at The Oddfellows Hall when they opened for Propagandhi, so take my word for it, they'll deliver! Two local bands will be opening for them at this show, including popular local punk rockers Free Beer in a rare concert appearance (you can see them THIS WEEKEND at Foggy's too as well) and, for you metalheads, local grimecore rockers Shit Liver! Unless they get added to a Rosie metal night in the interim, this should be their first show since January, and it should open them up to a wider audience given what I expect to be a hard hitting night of punk rock! Seriously, The Rebel Spell are one of my favourite Canadian punk bands, take my word for it, check them out! Free Beer always entertain, and Shit Liver's crusty brand of hardcore will no doubt find some fans! There is no announced cover charge, everything starts at 10:00 PM, and you must be 19 to attend. And finally, Woods of Ypres' new music video has FINALLY came out! After filming for it took place with Handshake Inc. and director David Hall this past summer, Decibel Magazine gave the world an exclusive first look at Woods of Ypres official music video for "I Was Buried (In Mount Pleasant Cemetery)", just in time to promote their forthcoming "Woods IV" rerelease! I find the song's a bit long and melancholy for a first single, but it's an epic number, so it works on that basis! The video features the band performing on what looks like the front porch of a house, intermingled with a song-related storyline including frontman David Gold's visit to Mount Pleasant Cemetery, the cliff jump and beard shaving scene that we shown here, and more. I won't give away too much, just watch it! I find that the video is very sunny and bright compared to the song's tone, and the blur effects from the band's performance segments sort of wash out Shane and Joel, but aside from that, the video works well! Good quality work, and it's nice to finally see another Woods of Ypres music video!
