Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Lucky 13

Alright, it's now time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile, but with a change in band! Originally, we had randomly selected defunct classic/hard rockers Mourning Wood for this month, but it turns out that their Facebook (and only online) page was recently deleted. I wish bands wouldn't do that, but what can you do? This series requires profiled bands to have an active online page, so I have swapped Mourning Wood for the nearest alphabetical Sault Ontario band in our defunct links that we haven't profiled yet, and as it turns out, that drew another hard rocking cover band from the mid-2010s. Here's what you should know for this month's spotlight feature!

Audio/Video: A covers-only band, Lucky 13 don't have any known original material, but a few online videos survive from their active run. A couple of Toystock performances of theirs can be found on YouTube, while two videos from shows of theirs can be found on our Facebook page as well, wth covers of bands like The Cult, Collective Soul, The Refreshments, and The Stone Temple Pilots on public offer. Info/Analysis: One of the surprise debuting bands from the inaugural Toystock charity concert in November 2012 (later becoming the only band to play that event's first three installments), Lucky 13 became one of the most popular sights on the local cover bar circuit in the mid-2010s, frequenting such venues as The Rockstar Bar & The Rednecks Saloon at well received solo concerts through the first half of 2016. The band parted ways with original guitarist Jeremey Salatuk that March, replacing him with Robin Lee for the ensuing months, including headlining Rednecks' relaunch party in April. Lucky 13 quietly fell inactive by year's end, though a one-off reunion occurred in October 2017 for The Rockstar Bar's Taryn Bugyra benefit concert. Lucky 13 were a solid band with good chemistry and a sound that was accessible to general audiences and fans of members' old bands, while also having a grit and edge with songs not often covered by other local acts.

Ed's melodic yet heavy vocals were a constant fit for existing and new fans, Jeff's bass work was a steady presence, Roger's drumming was always on point, and both Jeremey and Robin were effective on lead guitar during their stints in Lucky 13. Hopefully we haven't see the last of the guys live, but don't miss Jeremey with The 3 Day Millionaires!

I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile, even with the impromptu band change! Next month in this series, our random selection was of a Sault Ontario project who I don't think will have enough material for a solo profile, so I've added a second band to fill things out. As such, we'll coincidentally be looking at a pair of inactive duos, namely Infinity Grinder (featuring Bizotic and Northern Tragedy alumni) and Orange (feauring Chris from Telephone & Address), so look for those on or around May 10th, and for more news this week! This Weekend's Hard Rock Concert Previews!!

Barring a late notice concert announcement, this post covers the entirety of known hard rock concerts in our area this weekend, and while it's not the busiest weekend of shows that we've ever seen, there is some cool stuff going on, including a benefit concert for a talented local singer. Here's what you should know, in rough chronological order!

We'll start this weekend at Gliss Steak & Seafood, where ex-Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will hit the stage for three more acoustic solo concerts TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY! Continuing his weekly arrangement at The Quality Inn's restaurant, this weekend's trifecta of matinee concerts should provide another solid opportunity to hear his unplugged hard rock covers at a familiar locale, so don't miss Tym over the next three nights if you're up for some solo acoustic action! As usual for his long term run at Gliss, these three shows have 6:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and no age limits, but remember that this is a sit-down formal restaurant, not a nightclub. Next up, we'll take a brief detour to St. Ignace, Michigan, where Traverse City classic metal trio Peril will return for a pair of concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Northern Pines Lounge at the Kewadin Shores Casino! Continuing their recent run of monthly weekends at an E.U.P. Kewadin branch (alternating between the Soo and St. Ignace), this will be their first stop at the St. Ignace Kewadin in two months. This veteran group have proven to be a fan favourite attraction in their regular trips north, especially given how they play here way more often than in the Lower Peninsula as of late, so if you're up for some old school classics and some more recent selections, you know where to go! As usual for Peril's northern trips, you can see them at The Northern Pines Lounge tomorrow and/or Saturday night at 9:00 PM, you must be 21 or older to attend, and there are no announced cover charges. We'll wrap up this weekend's currently announced hard rock concert previews with a special event, as 5 bands will join forces THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rockstar Bar to support Cherry Crush frontwoman & former Foggy Notions owner Taryn Bugyra through her battle with kidney cancer! As you may know, Taryn needs surgery at the end of the month in Hamilton, and will have to be off work for 6 weeks (including two before coming home), so this fundraiser will help raise money for her family at this difficult time. Four bands are donating their time to the cause, including in a surprise confirmation, the reunion of veteran alt-hard rock cover quartet Lucky 13 in the 12:30 AM headlining slot! Inactive publically since June of last year, their surprise set is apparently replacing one from classic/hard rockers Soundcheck for unannounced reasons, but hopefully nothing bad happened with that band!

As this is a reunion for a charitable event with no concurrent public acknowledgement from Lucky 13 themselves, I'll approach this set as a one-off unless otherwise stated, but it's great to see this talented cover outfit back for the first time in well over a year, so don't miss them on Saturday! No word though on if ex-guitarist Jeremey Salatuk will play or guest with the band or not, given that he's performing with multiple bands on Saturday already. Fellow classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires will co-headline with their first public set in two months at 10:30 PM, with door & raffle prize draws filling the extended time between bands starting after 11:30 PM. The opening timeslot at 9:00 PM will be shared by two linked bands, namely Taryn's own band Cherry Crush (a new confirmation) and their debuting sister tribute band The Soo Fighters, and this should be an extra poignant kick-off to the event! Hopefully Taryn gives a strong performance for her friends and family on this special night, and it'll be interesting to hear The Soo Fighters at last!

Our source for the lineup information is The Rockstar Bar's Hayley Warnock on the Facebook event page on Tuesday. Note that The Rockstar Bar's outside marquee advertises 5 bands, so either there's a surprise of some kind, or that references local hard rock quartet Eclipse, who were originally announced to perform last month. No word on why they're apparently out of this event, but don't miss them downstairs on Halloween weekend! Tickets are $10 for this 19+ benefit concert, so message organizers linked on the event page if you need advance tickets delivered! This should be a great night, so see above for more details, good luck to Taryn through this difficult time, and here's Lucky 13 live last year!

Inactive Local Band Notes, Go Skateboarding Day Fallout, And More!!

A new news post is upon us for this Friday morning, so what is on tap? Sadly, this post is largely devoted to bands being moved out of our active band links, but we also have a few more assorted recent updates and a new video featuring a recent performance to check out. With all of that said, here's what you need to know!

We have a pair of bands to imminently move to our inactive band links due to a year's inactivity, one being classic/hard rock cover quartet Lucky 13. While the band has made no public statements about their future, they have not played an advertised concert since one year ago on Sunday when they headlined at The Rockstar Bar, and they hadn't posted on their Facebook page since April of last year as it was (though note that guitarist Robin "Bones" Lee left his other band Soundcheck for health reasons earlier this year.) A staple of the bar circuit since debuting at the inaugural Toystock charity concert in November 2012, this union of Aftersight, Turner Up, and Gully Yodelers alumni were frequently seen on stage in solo concerts over the following 3½ years, as well as becoming the only band to play at the first three Toystocks, headlining The Rednecks Saloon's relaunch party last spring, and closing The Rockstar Bar's St. Patrick's Day festivities in 2013.

Featuring a solid selection of veteran presences in the local rock scene, Lucky 13 were always a reliable sight on local stages, and their gritty, workmanlike sound could easily be slotted into numerous events alongside their solo gigs. Hopefully we see them back out there at some point in the future, but best of luck to Ed, Robin, Jeff, and Roger, and don't miss original guitarist Jeremey Salatuk with The 3 Day Millionaires!

The other band we're soon moving to our inactive band links is local pop punk quartet Stereo North, as they have not issued a public update concerning new band activity since one year ago on Sunday themselves. In that Facebook page posting, the guys announced that they were "taking a little break" due to guitarist Matthew Anich becoming a father, but their only updates since have referenced frontman Andrew Pucci's burgeoning solo career, so it appears that the "little break" has grown into an extended hiatus (at least.) Launching publically in late 2014 with a bassist search, Stereo North debuted at the Bon Soo Marquee outdoor concert in February 2015, and next played live at the following month's VM Radio Battle of the Bands, so they definitely got a big start! Fans may also recall seeing them open for The River Jacks, Exes For Eyes, and Broomfiller, perform at 2015's Rotaryfest Stage 2 & last year's second VM Radio Battle, and play numerous all-local events late in their 1½ year run, last seen at The Rednecks Saloon over the Victoria Day long weekend last year.

Stereo North were an entertaining band that acclimated fast to the local scene back in 2015, and their originals and often-unconventional covers were always a fun sight on local stages, and it's a shame that their songwriting for a planned debut album didn't visibly lead to recording sessions before going on their "little break". Best of luck to Andrew, Matthew, Bill, and Brett in the future, but hopefully Stereo North return at some point, and don't miss Andrew's solo work or bassist Bill Bennett's current band Stegadeth!

Next up, here's a new YouTube video from yesterday's fifth annual Go Skateboarding Day festivities at Queen Elizabeth Park! Posted by SooToday to their YouTube channel and attached to this article, the video is similar to their video from last year, only with no interview clip, just skateboarding, vendor, and band footage with an audio track pasted on top in post. Filming took place during blues/hard rock trio Electric Church's opening set, and they are seen from 56 seconds on in the video, but again, their performance is completely muted. Still well edited and shot, so give it a look below, and click here for a live streamed segment of Go Skate Day before the bands began!



Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band or event name:

• Local alternative punk quartet A Dire Setback will play their second out of town concert on Saturday, July 8th when they open for Peterborough doom rapper Garbageface for a third time, albeit in Timmins! The show comes just a day after the two acts open for Vaultry at The Canadian for Live705's punk/rap hybrid event, and this should be another intriguing opportunity for A Dire Setback to branch out! There's not enough Timmins/Soo connections for concerts in either city. Click here for more details, and good luck on the road once again next month!
• Local indie rock quartet K.I.C.K. and former Pixo Control frontman Mike Mikus (in one of his last sets before moving to Montreal) have been confirmed as the fifth and sixth acts playing at this year's Downtown Street Party on Queen Street East on July 13th, joining hard rockers The Din and fellow groups The Bearded Lounge, Sometimes Ange, and The Stumpy Coldwater Trio. Solid additions to add some alternative original stylings to the proceedings, so keep them in mind as well for this Thursday event next month! • I reluctantly have to remove Sault Michigan/Isle Royale metal solo project The 1,000,000,000's Who Died from our band links due to the quiet deletion of their Facebook (and only online) page at some point this year. Led by Life's Eclipse mainman Jason Mills, The 1,000,000,000's Who Died were best known from their participation in label Werehold Records' Friday the 13th new music events from 2012 through last May, but nothing has followed in the past year, and their page deletion leaves Life's Eclipse as the only Werehold act listed in our active links. Hopefully we hear more from Jason's musical projects soon, perhaps on October 13th!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Lucky 13), Weekend Concert Previews, And More!!

Before we dive into the newly announced Rotaryfest band lineup for next month, we have weekend concert previews to get to over the coming days, including a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, while we also have a new cover video to cap things off. Now, here's what you need to know!

Local classic/alt-hard rock cover quartet Lucky 13 will return to the stage for one night only THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rockstar Bar! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced the show via the official Facebook event page yesterday. A one nighter due to the Jizzy Vibes rap concert taking place there tomorrow, this summer kick-off show will end a two month hiatus for Ed, Robin, Jeff, and Roger since their most recent gig at the same venue in April. Lucky 13 should have a fun set in store for fans of their varied yet often heavy blend of covers, so keep their latest show in mind for THIS SATURDAY despite the late notice! There's no cover charge announced for this 19+ event, which will start at 10:00 PM. For more details, visit the above links, and for a preview, here's Lucky 13 live earlier this year!

Moving to previously announced concerts, veteran local acoustic hard rock solo artist Tym Morrison will continue his long-term weekly arrangement at Gliss Steak & Seafood for more solo concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY! With July dates ready to be added to our listings when publically confirmed, this prolific local favourite should have more good tunes at the ready for his unplugged matinees at the downtown restaurant, so if you're up for more acoustic hard rock hits this weekend, you know where to be! Tomorrow & Saturday's  Gliss shows are at 6:00 PM like before, and while they are all ages events with no announced concerts, remember that this is a sit-down restaurant. Lastly for currently known concert previews for this weekend, we'll head across to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino for the latest shows from Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63, who will continue their monthly run there TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Though still not plugging their shows regularly on Facebook, these shows have been previously advertised by the band and venue, and will also mark Highway 63's first shows since frontman Henry Switzer donated his long hair to charity to make wigs for children with cancer (great gesture!) Fans in St. Ignace should be raring to see the guys in action once again with their hard hitting cover selection this weekend, so don't miss out tomorrow and/or Saturday at 9:00 PM! Both shows have 21+ age limits and no announced cover, so see above for details, and here's Highway 63 live!

 
Finally for today, here's the newest "Cover of the Month" from local alternative hard rock trio The Din, as per their YouTube channel last week! This is of their rendition of Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" (well, The Barenaked Ladies' version of it), which the band is tying with a more serious hope to spread peace & tolerance in the wake of the Orlando nightclub shooting. The multi-angle performance notably features drummer Brandan Glew on co-lead vocals, and while his singing does sound a little forced at times, it does compliment Mike Haggith's singing! Well done and thoughtful shift from their norm, so check it out below!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Lucky 13) And Most Of This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

After a few quiet days at the SMS, we're back in full force to tackle this weekend's concert previews! We'll cover this weekend's Mourning Wood, Tym Morrison, and Banned shows tomorrow, given the amount of hard rock shows this weekend, but we'll focus today on shows taking place from Thursday-Friday in the area, starting with a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Lucky 13 will return to The Rockstar Bar for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band quietly announced the show on their Facebook page on April 3rd, but it slipped us by until today (in any event, the venue hasn't confirmed it online as of this writing.) Fresh off of their Park Grille debut last weekend, this will be the first Rockstar Bar date from this talented veteran band since their first show with new guitarist Robin Lee three weeks ago. This should be another solid showcase of Lucky 13's new lineup, so keep it in mind for TOMORROW NIGHT for some hard hitting cover action! No word on why they're not playing on Saturday night though, or regarding what act is. TOMORROW's show has NO COVER (a recent permanent change for local shows), you must be 19 or older to attend, and there's a 10:30 PM start time in effect. Next up, a recently announced house party concert entitled "Metal Massacre!" goes down TONIGHT with some new and familiar faces rocking out at 124 Anna Street in Manitou Park, where last year's Man & His Machine and Shit Liver house shows were hosted! The headliners are local thrash/death metal trio Pillory in their second gig, first non-battle set, and first headlining appearance since their reunion, while new local death metal band Kaepora Gaebora (featuring Bring The Fallen, Ashoka at the Show, Bring The Misery, and Gates of Winter alumni) will make their live concert debut as co-headliners, which should be very interesting on both counts! Another debuting band, local metal duo Twistory (featuring ex-Pillory bandmates Robert Sartini & Josh Amendola) will also be unveiled tonight, with the lineup rounded out by Tyler Gibson's late-added goregrind projects Crucify the Whore & Rotopsy, the latter of which playing live for the first time in eight months tonight, so if you've missed them, don't forget about this one!

Solid lineup for fans of young local death and extreme metal, and it definitely has the flavour of old Blood Shed/H.N.E. house party events, so keep this show in mind for tonight! Promoted by Twistory frontman Josh Amendola, Metal Massacre! has a "pay what you can" model for entry, there's no advertised age limits, and everything starts at 9:00 PM, but of course, respect the fact that is a home & residence. Also this weekend, a blast of metal will also hit The Oddfellows Hall TOMORROW NIGHT for the first all-ages metal show of the year at the downtown venue! This concert will be headlined by French technical death metal quintet Gorod in their local concert debut, making them the second band from France in around a year to headline at The Oddfellows Hall (following Benighted.) Their progressive yet brutal blend of death metal should melt many faces tomorrow night, so definitely check Gorod out in advance of this concert! Montreal progressive/theatrical metal quartet Bookakee (who played at last year's Benighted show) will return for an encore tomorrow themselves, and if you saw last year's show, you'll know how wild and extreme their stage show can get, so get hyped for Bookakee as well! Local support will include punk/metal quintet Jack Spades (in their first non-battle of the bands set of 2016) and reunited local extreme metal band Winkstinger, making their first public concert appearance since 2013, with their new lineup finally being unveiled too!

As well, local grind/thrash band Them have been added as a late opening band, as per the official Facebook event page on Wednesday. Good choice, especially given that they haven't been a frequent concert sight in over a year, so come check out Them's new lineup too tomorrow! Also, note that Montreal death metal band Beyond Creation are only playing select dates on Gorod & Bookakee's Canadian tour (this is not one of them), and this show was relocated from The Algonquin Pub due to that venue not being "ready in time". This ALL AGES show has a $10 cover charge and start at 7:00 PM, so see the above links for more details on this huge show, and here's Gorod live!



Finally for this preview post, local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires will make their delayed debut at The Park Grille TOMORROW NIGHT! After they were replaced on short notice by the aforementioned Lucky 13 last week, this new band from Havadder, Cleveland Steamer, and Wishbone alumni will become the third band to play at the Industrial Park Crescent restaurant/venue during their spring season experiment with live music, with returns on May 13th & 20th also scheduled. As such, this will be The 3 Day Millionaires' first show since rocking Rednecks three weeks ago, and this talented group of familiar local faces should deliver a strong show tomorrow, so keep it and The Park Grille in mind for your concert plans! Remember, this is a one-nighter, The Park Grille is only booking Fridays (for the time being?) An early 8:00 PM start time is in effect with no announced age limits or cover charges, but remember where this is being held. Filmed at their Rednecks show on March 25th by ex-Chintzy Slicks/SBD drummer Shane Triplett and shared to the band's Facebook page the next day, this 86 second video (from shortly before the venue's relaunch and stage remodeling) is of The Millionaires covering Ugly Kid Joe's "Everything About You", a favourite cover of a few recent local bands, though here, drummer Scott McLurg provides lead vocals. Shot on the vertical cell phone camera angle, it's still a fun cover that the guys handle well, though it is incomplete and a little fuzzy. Give it a look below!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Lucky 13 & Tym Morrison) And Most Of This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

Another weekend is upon us for us to preview on the SMS, so let's tackle most of this weekend's currently announced hard rock concert previews today, including some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, some on SHORT NOTICE! For reference sake, we will preview Saturday night's Project 906 concert and any further late notice shows either tonight or early tomorrow. Now, here's what you should know for this weekend!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Lucky 13 will be the second band to play at The Park Grille when they rock out at the Industrial Park Crescent restaurant/venue TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the venue only confirmed the show on their Facebook page on Monday, with the band following suit the next day. An apparent replacement for fellow local cover veterans The 3 Day Millionaires (who are advertised for tomorrow on The Park Grille's website), Lucky 13 will be playing just their third concert with new guitarist Robin Lee, and their blend of entertaining & often heavy covers should find a strong audience at The Park Grille TOMORROW! No word though on what happened to The 3 Day Millionaires, ironically featuring ex-Lucky 13 guitarist Jeremey Salatuk, but we'll confirm their other announced shows at this venue on the site soon.

An early start time of 8:00 PM is in effect for this concert, which has no announced cover charge or age limit, but remember that this is a restaurant. Next up, and with new Gliss Steak & Seafood shows now announced for TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, we'll add Tym Morrison's remaining April concerts to our listings, plus a return to The Road House Bar & Grill TOMORROW NIGHT as well! Apologies for the short notice on this weekend's shows, they were only confirmed via their respective Facebook event pages on Tuesday. Following this past weekend's Gliss shows (listed early as they were added with the later-cancelled gig on Thursday, March 31st gig), Tym will be join TONIGHT & TOMORROW'S shows at the downtown restaurant with gigs on April 15th & 16th, 22nd & 23rd, and 29th & 30th, and remember that we still confirm them on a month by month basis due to the amount and uncertain end date of his Gliss arrangement. Meanwhile, TOMORROW NIGHT's Road House show will continue a recent trend of Tym playing at the Trunk Road venue on a Friday early in each month since January.

It's not publically stated if Tym has a new monthly engagement at The Road House (a venue he played weekly at a few years back), but the pattern is a good indicator to look for him there on May 6th or 13th! Tym's Gliss shows this weekend and beyond are all at 6:00 PM with no announced cover charges or age limits (but remember where they're being held), while TOMORROW'S Road House show has a likely 10:00 PM start time, 19+ age limit, and no cover. Finally for today's previews, let's head back to Sault Ontario for the second annual chili cook-off fundraiser event THIS SATURDAY NIGHT for the annual Ride For Sight motorcycle rally for blindness fundraising & awareness, as Stiffler's Mom will again be providing musical entertainment! After a successful first installment last year, the local party hard rock cover trio will be back at The Garden River Community Centre at 6 Shingwauk Street on Saturday to continue their support of the rally and charitable causes within, so whether you're a fan of theirs, a chili aficionado, someone affected by blindness, or an active participant in the Ride For Sight, you have multiple reasons to consider coming out! Stiffler's Mom will close the day's entertainment (timeslot unannounced), but the chili cook-off proper will begin at 5:00 PM on Saturday, with raffles and cook-off judging/awards coming in the interim.

Also, note that local rock frontmen Justin Langlois (Redundant) and Jamie July (The Band Camp Rejects) will be among the competitors, so good luck to them and all other competitors! Tickets are $20 via committee members (and presumably at the door) for this all ages event, but promoters are again asking prospective attendees to buy tickets at local Scotiabank branches, as the bank is again matching ticket sales dollar for dollar as part of the donations to The Foundation Fighting Blindness, which remains a great gesture! The Rednecks Saloon Relaunch Party Review!!

For the first time since the Fuck The Facts concert in September (due to personal family health matters), we finally have a full new concert review post at The Sault Metal Scene! Thanks to everyone for being so patient in the long term, and (due to the long video upload time) in the short term, it won't be 6+ months for the next review! As you may remember, Saturday night played host to The Rednecks Saloon's relaunch party, and while the former Nicolet Tavern only re-opened in 2013 after their name change, Saturday's event was at least partially to coincide with recent renovations inside the bar, including new brick paneling and artificial fireplace along the band area's walls, the removal of the Christmas lights on the walls (though they survive on the ceiling), and in a move that many musicians will welcome, the removal of the wooden fenced-off area in the far left corner of the stage, giving the stage some well needed extra room! More renovations are apparently to come in the dining/bar area in the back, but so far so good for Rednecks' new look!

The first two sets on Saturday were from solo performers, starting with Blood Shed Productions rapper Mikey Thomas (or Mikey T), in the first time I've seen him since getting his short haircut. He's a strong rapper with a good flow, but he often seemed nervous on stage, rarely introduced any songs by name, and had a few awkward pauses, but the crowd warmed to him by set's end. It's a tough spot when you're such an outlier from the other bands, but Mikey performed to his best, and look for him at future rap events! He was followed by local folk rock solo artist Jacob Quarrell, a.k.a. Shit Creek Survivor, who I was seeing for the first time the other night. Getting a good sound out of his small guitar, Jacob covered acts like Walk the Moon, Ed Sheeran, and City & Colour along with playing his own originals like "1,075", "Starry Nights", and "The Neighbourhood". With a punk-esque vocal tone, Jacob had an ease on stage, is a talented songwriter, and definitely has a good thing going, so keep tabs on Shit Creek Survivor to see where he's headed!

Local alternative/hard rock trio The Din played next in their first set since the VM Radio Battle of the Bands finals, and they delivered a fun set featuring familiar originals like "In Search of the Perfect Moment" and "Flux" with covers of the likes of The Barenaked Ladies, though a bass string break during their version of "Times Like These" led to self-deprecating jokes and Mike Haggith borrowing a 5 string bass to finish the set. Unveiling a new song named "Differences" on Saturday as well, the set served as the launch for their debut live CD "The Din Does Laundry" (which we outlined in this morning's post), and the bass mishap aside, everyone was on form musically! Mike's voice was loud and melodic, Tammy Hill continues to prove that she was an excellent find on guitar, and Brandan Glew kept pace on drums throughout their set! The Din are proving to be a fun and reliable band locally, and it should be interesting to hear what's next from them!

The middle set belonged to the debuting Band Camp Rejects, so who are they, and what do they play? Basically, they're the successors to the short-lived Under the Influence, whose first & last show was at last year's Toystock, with guitarist Mike Muto (ex-Issues) & bassist Ryan Bell returning from that band. In this new project, they've joined forces with recent Havadder guitarist Jamie July and Mourning Wood guitarist/concert co-promoter Steven Flint reprising his old Silver Dream role as The Band Camp Rejects drummer. As for their set proper, they definitely do fit our coverage based on the songs they played, all covers which ranged from acts John Mellencamp to Alter Bridge to Green Day to Poison. Featuring Jamie on lead vocals (though Steven took over for 3 songs), The Band Camp Rejects have the talent and crowd response to go far, but they only rarely bantered between or introduced any songs. This was a solid debut though, so stay tuned for more from The Band Camp Rejects when announced!

They were followed by the reunited metal cover trio Caveman Morrison, who were making their first live concert appearance since December 2013 on Saturday night! The band's 2012-2013 lineup was back in full force, with frontman Tym Morrison joined by bassist James White and drummer Johnny Belanger once again, and despite a delay in getting going, they entertained fans with a 6 song set with covers of the likes of Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and Ozzy Osbourne. Tym was oddly reserved on stage, leaving most of the between-song banter to Johnny, but everyone sounded strong musically, with Tym's electric guitar solos a welcome sight after over 2 years, and James (who was under the weather) didn't seem off during their set! Tym's vocals were quiet in the mix, especially early in their set, but it was great to see Caveman Morrison back, and hopefully they have more in store for 2016!

James stuck around for the co-headlining set with his funk/hard rock quartet The Elements, though with drummer Alex Hagerman unable to play again on Saturday, the band enlisted guitarist Jesse Cook's Winkstinger bandmate Jonas Gasperas to fill in. Jonas was a strong fill-in, and has ready-made chemistry with Jesse already, so fans had nothing to worry about there! Sadly, The Elements didn't play any originals from their forthcoming debut EP, but they entertained fans with covers of everyone from Sublime and Primus to Van Halen and Metallica, getting a strong fan response in the process! Rob Speers' vocals aren't rangy enough for some of their choices, but he was in firm control of the stage, and save for a guitar mishap on "Suck My Kiss", Jesse was on fire with his riffs and solos as you'd expect! It was fun seeing The Elements again, and hopefully their originals return for their next show!

The Rednecks relaunch party closed with local classic/hard rock cover quartet Lucky 13 in a rare set at a multi-band, non-Toystock concert, but they left fans on a high note with their varied and entertaining covers! Making his second appearance with the band since replacing Jeremey Salatuk, new guitarist Robin "Bones" Lee showed his guitar and non-country chops well during renditions of Royal Blood and Refreshments songs, while frontman Ed Vowels has definitely upped his frontman game, singing "Figure It Out" sans guitar with a complete ease and swagger that I wasn't expecting! A fan favourite moment was their hybrid of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" with the lyrics from Journey's "Don't Stop Believing", and while I couldn't stay through set's end, Lucky 13 showed why they're a favourite live band, and hopefully Lucky 13's new lineup keeps at it in the coming months!

Overall, this was a fun concert, and it was great to be a photographer, filmer, and critic for a full concert again! Thanks to Terry & Steven at Twin City Sound for putting this on, and to all of the bands and staff at Rednecks for a solid night, and I'll be back out before you know it! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Rednecks Relaunch Party, Mourning Wood, And Havadder), And Weekend Concert Previews!!

The first weekend of April is drawing near, so let's start previewing concerts taking place during it today, with this post largely comprised of SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS! Alas, four of these shows were only announced this past weekend, too soon for us to plug them in advance of this coming weekend with, hence why they've been held for our previews, but don't bypass them! We'll touch on this weekend's Tym Morrison, Project 906, and potential further late notice shows in our next post, but for now, here's what you should know!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Mourning Wood will become the first band to play at The Park Grille at 196 Industial Park Cresent when they play there TOMORROW NIGHT, but it's not a trial run, as further Friday nighters are coming on May 6th & May 27th! Apologies for the short notice on TOMORROW'S show, we only heard about it via the official Facebook event page on Sunday. For those unfamiliar, The Park Grille has been open since May 2014, is located behind Soo Mill, and is known for it's "industrial man sized food", so if you live up at this end of town, here's a joint that you might want to check out! Mourning Wood's concert TOMORROW (their first since gigs at Rednecks two weeks ago) is just the start of The Park Grille's band experiment, which will also see blues rock veterans Mojo playing there twice later this month, as well as new hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires for four gigs this spring (more on them specifically shortly.) For the time being, at least, all of The Park Grille's concerts are on Fridays only, but Mourning Wood members will be busy on Saturday, which we'll outline in a bit.

There is no announced cover charge or age limit for Mourning Wood's shows TOMORROW, May 6th, or May 27th (but remember that this is a restaurant), and bands will play early sets at 8:00 PM. With steady bands booked on Fridays through the end of May, it'll be interesting to see how successful The Park Grille's band experiment is, so consider being at Mourning Wood's first show of the venue's concert run TOMORROW, and here they are live!



Next up, local classic/hard rock cover trio Havadder will end their near-three month break with shows at The Rockstar Bar TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies again for the short notice, the band also only announced the shows via the official Facebook event page on Sunday. Their first announced shows since the band confirmed guitarist Jamie July's departure (though trio gigs have not been uncommon at this time of year anyway), Havadder have been fairly quiet since early January, though we have seen Travis & Scott with The 3 Day Millionaires in the interim. No word on where Havadder have been lately, but it'll be good to see Jugga and company rocking out at The Rockstar Bar again TOMORROW & SATURDAY, so keep their returns in mind! These shows are 19+ events with 10:30 PM start times, but it came out on The Rockstar Bar's Facebook group earlier this week that the venue has abolished cover charges for local bands, including this weekend's Havadder concerts!

No word on if this solely applies to cover bands playing alone, or if the policy will extend to multi-band events, but given how most band-hosting bars in the Soo don't have an announced regular cover fee anymore, this should be welcomed by fans! Lastly for late notice concert announcements, The Rednecks Saloon will be hosting a "grand re-opening" concert THIS SATURDAY NIGHT with a stacked lineup of local bands! Again, apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced this past Saturday via it's Facebook event page. No word on why they're having this "Redneck Relaunch Party" when they haven't recently closed (has there been renovations lately?), but in any event, 7 local acts will take the stage on SATURDAY, so who all is playing? In descending order from headliners to openers, we have a rare multi-band concert set from hard/alternative rock cover quartet Lucky 13 (in their second gig with new guitarist Robin Lee) at around 1:15 AM, with local funk/hard rock quartet The Elements in a rare Rednecks appearance at around 12:25 AM, though no word on if Alex Hagerman will be back behind the kit or not. At 11:35, we'll actually see the return of local metal/hard rock cover trio Caveman Morrison to the local concert stage!

Last seen on stage at the former Roosevelt Hotel on New Year's Eve in 2013, it's great to see Tym bring back his live local band after a two+ year hiatus, so consider coming to the former Nicolet on Saturday to check them out, and they're back in our active band links too! According to co-promoter Terry Eaton in a Facebook conversation, he believes that bassist James White and drummer Johnny Belanger are back from their last incarnation, but the band hasn't confirmed this yet. A debuting local band named The Band Camp Rejects will take the stage at 10:50 PM, and while members are opting to remain secretive until SATURDAY, I can confirm that their lineup has familiar faces. We'll let you know when something is publically revealed! Local hard rock/alternative trio The Din will play their first set since their VM Radio Battle of the Bands runner-up performance at 10:00 PM on Saturday, while two local solo acts (folk artist Jacob "Shit Creek Survivor" Quarrell and rapper Mikey Thomas) will open the event at 9:30 & 9:00 PM.

Co-promoted by Mourning Wood's Terry Eaton & Steven Flint, and with sound presumably provided by Twin City Sound as a result, there is NO COVER CHARGE for this 19+ concert, so how could you miss out on all of this live music action on SATURDAY NIGHT? AlgomA/Chronobot Split Pre-Release Promotion, A New Song, And Much More!!

In possibly our last news post before we post this month's CD review, today's post will lead off with details on what will likely be next month's CD review topic, as it's getting a lot of online press coverage and promotion this month! Alongside, we have a new-to-us song from a recent addition to our band links, and some assorted recent notes, so here's what you should know!

The forthcoming split EP from local doom metal trio AlgomA and Saskatchewan doom metal band Chronobot (which comes out THIS FRIDAY) is the subject of some advance media coverage, so what should you know on it? Parker Folse from the metal website No Clean Singing previewed the split for this article from March 20th where they officially unveiled one track from each band's half of the release, so if you want to hear the studio version of AlgomA's "Phthtisis" or Chronobot's "Red Nails", see the above links, or visit the featured Soundcloud page! Without giving too much away (as this split is very likely for next month's CD review), Parker reviewed "Phthisis" as a "raw, vicious onslaught" for those "in the mood to be trampled", among other graphic depictions. Given the genre, this should be taken as a compliment! Then on Thursday, the metal blog Doomed To Darkness Zine gave the split an 8/10 score in this review, positively reflecting on AlgomA as "a very great sounding mixture" of their subgenres.

Also featuring in-depth thoughts on both bands' talents and sounds, it's a solid review for the lead-up to the formal release on Friday, so give it a look at this link and more above! Most recently, AlgomA bassist Kevin Campbell and Chronobot keyboardist Darius Simonot were separately interviewed by Jill Girardi for this article from their label Dead Beat Media (who are releasing this split), so what should you know from that? In the interview, Kevin is asked about how the two bands hooked up for the release, the recording process for AlgomA's half of the split, the meanings of their contributed songs, the concept of the album art, why they opted for a vinyl release, future plans for their next split with Hooded Menace, touring plans, how the band formed, and much more, while Darius got basically the exact same questions concerning Chronobot. These interviews are solid reads for fans of both bands, so be sure to check out the full interviews above or at this location!

In terms of scoops, Kevin did note that Pixo Control/Id Iota bassist Dustin Goodall helped mix and master AlgomA's songs, "exciting news" regarding their second full length CD will apparently come later this year, and he revealed that "The Electric Fence" is apparently their first original where a character in the lyrics survives the story within. This is a big week for fans of AlgomA and Chronobot, so see above for more promotion of this split disc, stay tuned for details on it's release on Friday! Lastly, AlgomA posted their debut CD "Reclaimed By The Forest" in full on their YouTube channel yesterday, so stream it free above & below as we await the split's release!



Next up, here's a new/old original song from new local experimental hard rock solo project The Coyote Speedfreaks! It's new to us via a share on their Facebook page last week, but Chase actually uploaded this to his personal YouTube channel in July 2014, so that's at least how long this project has been in the works before their public reveal a few months back. Entitled "One of Many", this techno-influenced number isn't as heavy as the Speedfreaks' later material, but it's well composed and creative, so give it a listen below!



Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

• Local classic/hard rock veterans Havadder have quietly parted ways with guitarist Jamie July, as per his recent removal from their Facebook page's lineup. A reason for his departure hasn't been announced, but Jamie (who joined Havadder upon their late 2013 reunion) increasingly only played with them during summer gigs, so it hasn't been uncommon to see them play as a trio. Hopefully the split was amicable in any case, so best of luck to Jamie in the future, and stay tuned for more on Havadder's show this weekend when our next concert preview post goes up!
• In another musician search from ex-Bear Hunters guitarist Mike Vincent, he's now looking for a bassist for what appears to be his band Troubled Mind (alongside fellow Skull After Betrayl alum Adam Brett), which he describes as "weird metal and fucked up rock". Mike has jam space, the band only plays originals, and both guys provide vocals, but they aren't opposed to having a new bassist sing as well. If you're interested in trying out, message Mike at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from Thursday!
• SooToday's coverage of last week's VM Radio Battle of the Bands final round was posted online on Friday, where Donna Hopper mostly covers indie rockers K.I.C.K.'s victory, and includes remarks from K.I.C.K.'s Simon Shearsby & Kevin D'Orazio, where they talk about the experience, Kevin's addition to the band, and their plans to use their winnings to record a debut EP. Sadly, only one photo is included with the article, and Donna was unable to cover the semifinal rounds live, but it's a good write-up of the event, so give it a look at this link, and stay tuned for her Tuned episode on the battle!

Id Iota Updates, New Sault Michigan Videos, And Local Band Lineup Notes!!

With this last week of March now upon us, let's dive into some recent news and notes, including some lineup additions and clarifications to take note of, new videos from some Sault Michigan-area artists, and first, the very latest from a talented local band, so here's what you should know!

Let's start with the latest from local alternative hard rock band Id Iota, who have welcomed Dan Linklater as their new bassist, replacing Justin Girardi, as per this new photo on their Facebook page. This reunites Dan with his former Dirty Few/Vertically Impaired bandmate Blair St. John, so there's instant chemistry from that alone, and he should fit in nicely! With that said, there's no word yet on when we'll see Id Iota live in the Soo next, but the band also revealed in the Facebook post with the picture that they'll end their concert hiatus with shows in Barrie, Toronto, and Waterloo next month, presumably as openers for The Pixo Control's upcoming Southern Ontario tour run in the same cities, but neither band has confirmed the joint billing. They're a good match, especially as Dustin Goodall is in both bands, so hopefully the tour goes very smoothly for them! Lastly, the aforementioned Facebook post also confirmed that Id Iota are indeed working on their debut EP, which they hope to finish before the tour run!

After a couple months of secretive and cryptic posts teasing their recent recording sessions, it's great to finally get public confirmation that an EP is in the works from the Free Beer/Habitat Shuffle successors, and they'll be back on stage for the first time since last summer in due course as well! That said, will Id Iota's EP be released before the tour, or just completed? Time will tell, but stay tuned for updates as we hear them!

Next up, here's our first media posting from the reunited Sault Michigan band The Creepy Little Coffee People! Uploaded by frontman Bob "Orb Hearthstone" Helsten to his YouTube channel on Wednesday, this is of the acoustic hard rock quartet's new song "I Know", and it has a hard rock structure despite it's unplugged style. It doesn't sound bad, harbouring a bit of a driving feel as it goes along, but with a lineup of Clownsack, I.S.O.M., Shift, and Retro Troop alumni, how could it be bad? Check out this new Creepy Little Coffee People song below, and stay tuned for more from them!



Next up, here's another solo performance/gear demonstration video from Project 906/ex-Ten Kings guitarist Joe Jenkins' YouTube channel on Friday! In this video, he's comparing two of his guitar pedals to gauge their sound and effectiveness, and is looking for input from fans of his channel. I think I prefer the Lockeness Modster Purple Plexi Clone for it's cleaner tone, but see what you think below, and give Joe's strong playing a look there too!

• Garden of Bedlam's Derek Turner filled in on drums with local funk/hard rock quartet The Elements during their Rockstar Bar set on Friday, reuniting him with ex-Side FX bandmate Rob Speers. Our source is personal Facebook postings from last week, and while there's been no public word on why Alex Hagerman missed the show, he and his fiancee did welcome a baby girl a couple of weeks ago, so that may be related. Congratulations to the happy couple, and hopefully Derek and The Elements delivered a great set on Friday!
• Local classic/alternative rock cover quartet Lucky 13 have added ex-Thin Ice bassist Robin "Bones" Lee to the fold as their new lead guitarist, replacing Jeremey Salatuk, as per bassist Jeff Gray's personal Facebook page this morning. I'm not familiar with Robin as a guitarist (or in a non-country genre), but he should have fit in well this talented veteran band in his debut on Saturday, so stay tuned for Lucky 13's huge next show that we'll be plugging in this weekend's concert previews!
• As a clarification for a recent addition to our band links, we can now confirm that new local punk band Programmed To Fail (formerly The Transjenners) is a two man project from local musicians Craig Kelly & Justin Thorkilson, as confirmed via Justin's personal Facebook page. I'm unsure of complete instrument roles for the guys, and neither are familiar from past local bands, but Craig is apparently their lead singer. Justin's a nice guy, and it's good to put some faces to this band, so look for more from them when announced!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Lucky 13 & The 3 Day Millionaires) And Sault Ontario Weekend Concert Previews!!

While our videos from last night's VM Radio Battle of the Bands finals slowly go online, here's the first of this weekend's concert previews! This post contains Sault Ontario shows from tomorrow through Saturday, including some SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, and if you're wondering, yes, we will cover Highway 63's E.U.P. shows and anything on super late notice in our next news post, be it tonight or tomorrow. Now, here's what you should know on this side of the border!

New local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires will step outside of The Rockstar Bar for the first time with solo concerts at The Rednecks Saloon going down TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced the shows via the official Facebook event page yesterday. Fresh off of their three-night-stand at The Rockstar Bar for the St. Patrick's Day weekend, this union of Boxcar Junction, Havadder, Wishbone, and Turner Up alumni should be in familiar form as they play their first shows at the former Nicolet Tavern this weekend, so don't miss their hard hitting covers TOMORROW and/or SATURDAY NIGHT! 10:30 PM start times are advertised for these 19+ shows, neither of which having an announced cover charge. Next up, fellow local classic/hard rock cover veterans Lucky 13 will return to the stage for one night only at The Rockstar Bar THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, the band only announced these shows via their official Facebook event page yesterday also. A one nighter due to tomorrow's Elements concert that we're covering at post's end, SATURDAY's concert will be Lucky 13's first in over 2 months, and will apparently mark the debut of the band's new lineup. Courtesy of his removal from their Facebook page's lineup, it appears that founding guitarist Jeremey Salatuk has left the band, possibly due to his involvement with the aforementioned 3 Day Millionaires, who are playing concurrently at Rednecks tomorrow. Jeremey's a strong guitarist no matter the band, but it'll be odd to not see him with Lucky 13 for their first time since their 2012 debut. Best of luck to him in the future though! The band hasn't announced the identity of his replacement yet, we will be sure to let you know when we hear anything!

Note that the band has mentioned "new changes" to their lineup, with the plural suggesting another lineup difference or new element to their live show, but we await public confirmation on what that could be. In the meantime, SATURDAY'S Lucky 13 concert has a 10:30 PM start time, no announced cover (but bring $5 or so just in case), and you must be 19 or older to attend. Moving to previously announced concerts, local hard rock solo singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to Gliss Steak & Seafood for more acoustic concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Continuing his long-term matinee concert arrangement at The Quality Inn's house restaurant, Tym's skilled and prolific blend of covers continue to be a reliable sight in the area, so don't miss out on what should be an intimate yet entertaining weekend of favourite songs! Remember, Tym is now just playing Fridays and Saturdays at Gliss, the Thursday shows were recently removed from his schedule, while last Thursday's Cocina Del Diablo show appears to have been a one-off. Tym will be on at 6:00 PM tomorrow and Saturday night, and while there's no announced cover charges or age limits, remember that this is a sit-down restaurant. Lastly for today's previews, local funk/hard rock quartet The Elements and newer local hard rock quartet Eclipse will join forces for what should be a fun concert at The Rockstar Bar TOMORROW NIGHT! Marking their first non-acoustic set in about two months, The Elements will be joined by guest saxophonist Josh Norling (Frank Deresti & The Lake Effect) in a sequel to their Halloween Party set last fall, though expect a more diverse set than October's Sublime tribute. The Elements will play 5 songs from their newly announced forthcoming debut EP as well, so keep that in mind as well! Opening tomorrow's show will be newer local hard rock quartet Eclipse (fresh off of their third place run in the VM Radio Battle of the Bands, more on that soon), and their hard hitting originals and covers should entertain whether you made the battle or not, so be at The Rockstar Bar early for their set!

This Good Friday concert has a 10:00 PM start time, no announced cover charge (but bring $5 or so just in case), and a 19+ age limit. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's The Elements (and Josh) rocking some Sublime live in October!
