YouTube Channel Profile Series: 2010abstract's Channel & Chris Bardawill

It's now time for this month's YouTube Channel Profiles, as we once again shine another monthly spotlight on YouTube channels whose videos are at least half comprised of local metal, hard rock, or punk-specific content! There is a slight change of plans for this month, as the second randomly selected channel for this month (YouTube user ander101) is actually one that we already spotlighted back in 2016! I'm surprised that I don't err like that more often given how long this series has been going. In its place, I randomly chose a 100% unfeatured-already channel to round out this multi-channel installment, so here's what you should know!

Owner: A member or representative of defunct Sault Michigan hard rock band Abstract (formerly Aux and later renamed Tantrum and Tantrym Tyme), exact identity unclear

Channel Timeline: Launched on March 10th, 2011; Videos uploaded that day and two days later

Channel Summary: The then-official YouTube channel for the Guitar Studio rock camp graduates (aged just 10-11 upon their 2010 launch), Abstract posted two jam session cover videos here from two separate locales

Why You Should Watch: While there's only two videos here, it is very interesting to see where the future Tantrym Tyme started, and even as pre-teens, you get the sense that they had bigger and better things ahead, as fans will know when comparing their mid-2010s Tantrym Time gigs to their humble beginnings as Abstract! This channel was succeeded by their later TANTRUMzone channel in 2012, which only ever had one video, with Tantrym Tyme-era videos largely posted on Facebook or by fans.

Abstract- Back in Black: The former Abstract's first and most popular video saw them cover AC/DC's "Back In Black" in a rehearsal space, with the band then-comprised of singer/guitarist Jacob Hotlen, guitarist Kyle Burton, bassist Mike East, and drummer Ethan Twardy (all but Kyle hung on through to the Tantrym Tyme years). Their ages absolutely have to be taken into account when gauging this performance and Jasob's vocals, which all undoubtedly improved by the end of Tantrym Tyme's active run, but for kids at their age, they did very well here, and Jacob nailed the solo!

Abstract- Woman: Two days later, the band's final upload here saw them cover Wolfmother's "Woman" in a new jam space with a new widescreen camera. While shorter, this is arguably a better showcase of Abstract's skills at the time, both from the more contemporary & faster song, as well as using more of Jacob's vocal range at the time. You can see why Abstract would have turned a few heads, but of course, check out Tantrym Tyme videos to see the culmination of all of their hard work as musicians as they entered high school!

Channel Timeline: Launched on June 6th, 2021; Videos uploaded that day through that September

Channel Summary: Alongside three non-musical videos of Chris and friends, his channel contains five videos from defunct local classic/hard rock cover quartet Obsession's set at the pandemic-restricted drive-thru Rotaryfest outside of the former Lowe's Plaza in July 2021. Obsession were represented here by singer Valerie Powley, guitarist Gabe Tessaro, bassist Jim Michaud, and drummer Steve Porco, with Rotaryfest sound tech Dan Belanger guesting for the set. The five videos include covers of Big Brother & The Holding Company's version of Erma Franklin's "Piece Of My Heart", AC/DC's "Highway To Hell", Billy Squier's "Everybody Wants You", Heart's "Barracuda", and in his most popular video, their set-opening cover of Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" with Gabe on lead vocals. Solid stuff all around from this missed local band, and they made the most of a screwy time, as nicely filmed by Chris!

This series will return on or around August 26th for another multi-band post, with three channels this time, as the first random selection just had three videos from across two concerts from the same band, so I randomly picked a channel with just videos from one show to fill things out with. It's now time for this month's YouTube Channel Profiles, continuing our monthly spotlight of randomly selected YouTube channels whose content is at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, and/or punk artists & concerts! Due to the first selected channel this month only having two relevant videos from the same event, and the second similarly formatted, we're tripling up this month, and conveniently, all three channels have live concert footage from Sault Michigan bands in the early 2010s! I swear I didn't plan this, but here's what you should know on all three!

Channel Timeline: Launched on February 12th, 2007; Videos uploaded from January 2009 & September 2011

Channel Summary: After previously uploading two videos of his dog Casper, wirelessguy6969 posted two videos from of young local hard rock quartet Abstract (later better known as Tantrym Tyme) playing an outdoor show at the Mackinaw Crossings shopping center in Mackinaw City in September 2011. Represented here by singer/guitarist Jacob Hotlen, guitarist Kyle Burton, bassist Mike East, and drummer Ethan Twardy, Abstract can be seen here covering AC/DC's "Back In Black", and as featured here, the longer & more viewed cover of The Scorpions' "Rock You Like A Hurricane". Considering the guys (well, kids) were 11-12 years old at the time of this show, their talents are impressive and would only improve through their 2017 dissolution, so it's interesting to see them at this early phase! More Tantrym Tyme videos can be seen on other YouTube & Facebook sources.

Channel Timeline: Launched on July 23rd, 2012; Videos uploaded that same day

Channel Summary: The official YouTube channel for this union of Fallen Heroes & Nixxon Dixxon alumni, The Gentlemen only posted two videos here, both from a show at The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino in July 2012, namely covers of The Black Keys' "Gold On The Ceiling" and, as featured here, Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name". While not a full hard rock band like we're used to seeing from bassist Kyle Beaumont & drummer Jake Lalonde together, they mesh well musically with Mike Russo & Steve Sivret on these songs, even if "Killing In The Name" is quite overplayed. Solid stuff despite the dark lighting! Check out more from The London Gentlemen in 2014 at this link.

Channel Timeline: Launched on June 21st, 2011; Videos uploaded that July and in March 2013

Channel Summary: Aside from a later video of him playing the video game Dishonored, Chris' only videos are of defunct local classic/hard rock trio Banned at a Music In The Park concert in nearby Rudyard from July 2011, where they covered Bob Seger's "Turn The Page", and as featured here, the more popular cover of Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone". Featuring current Tarnished frontman Alex Traynor and his dad Don on drums alongside bassist Alex Schrovenwever (Steelhead), the audio still holds up on these covers, but the visuals aren't great, with Chris filming from a very distant corner angle, so there isn't much to look at it beyond the park. Still interesting to see Alex Traynor's early live music work, and more videos from Banned's run do exist on YouTube (like here!)

Black Cloud - "Abstract Sounds" Album Review!!

It's now time for our 122nd monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, and for a second straight month, we're looking at a new release from a solo artist, namely new local death/trance metal solo project Black Cloud's debut demo album "Abstract Sounds"! Independently released on June 27th, this is the first full length release from this project, as led by local singer/guitarist Peytan Andreola, who is the only credited artist on the album. On sale via Black Cloud's Bandcamp page as well as a homemade physical pressing, copies are available to download for $5 or more, but you can also stream the whole thing for free there as well. That said, consider buying the whole thing to support Peytan's work! As usual for albums on there, song names below are linked to their Bandcamp copies. With 9 songs running for about 43 minutes in length, let's begin our review of "Abstract Sounds" with it's opening track "Death March", which is also it's shortest song overall.

An instrumental track with a very deliberate pace, this song feels like it's going somewhere, but it's not overly polished, and it could really use a percussion track. The bass work isn't up to the guitar's promise, and while it has an ominous tone, it strikes me as the intro to a song that was cut, and the 7 second break in music at the 63 second mark wasn't placed well. I like where it's going, but it needed more time. Second is "Undead Hordes", which is more of a fully realized song that has good guitar work, and there is a percussion element via what sounds like a shaker of some kind in the background, which adds a bit of flavour! That said, the production quality isn't great, and I think Peytan needs to revise the structure of how this song is laid out, as after a while, it starts to wander around too much. It's an improvement on the opener, however!

Song #3 is Black Cloud's eponymously titled "Black Cloud", which is also the first song on the album with vocals. Peytan seems to have a good death growl with clear enunciation (I prefer clarity in my harsh vocals), but they're not mixed well with the music, so they can be hard to make out. Structurally, this song has the best layout and pacing yet, but I'd have had more substantial percussion than what's on offer here. The guitar work is solid, and overall, the album is steadily trending upward, which is a good sign! That's followed by "Meet/Greet The Reaper", which is much quieter and scratchier in sound than it's preceding tracks. I don't know what happened, but this sounds like it was Peytan's first recording ever and he chose not to re-record it with the rest. This is unfortunate, especially as this song has the best and fastest percussion track yet, but the vocals and guitar work are so inaudible, it negates the song's pacing and aggression, as there is a good song here!

Fifth up is "Stream of Dreams", which opens with a softer and more melodic guitar intro before diving into full death metal territory, a sequence which reprises twice later before ending softly as well. The song has far better sound and production than "Meet/Greet The Reaper", and has good aggression, with vocals mixed in a little cleaner, but the lack of percussion doesn't help at all. The song's pacing and structure could stand to be addressed again, but there's things to build on! Then we have "Wanderers", which has some of Peytan's most ferocious vocal work yet, which is nice to see being built up, but the music is more reserved and doesn't come across as heavy and in your face as you would expect. Percussion does return, albeit more like a hand drum effect in the background, but at least there's something. The song proper appears to be laid out better, but I wish the guitar was louder and more forceful, as the vocals far outshine them here.

Song #7 is the album's title track "Abstract Sounds", which has a solid and heavy riff, and the vocals are suitably aggressive, but this is a song that needs more structural variance and care. This has a few stop/start transitions too many, and the guitar can wander a bit, but the song isn't overly long, and the light percussion (which sounds programmed) does speed up fittingly to go with the guitar. Not a bad song for what it is! That's followed by "No Bares Holded (Soaked In Blood)", which is it's correct title with that spelling, including the presumed spoonerism of "No Holds Barred." Opening with a hand drum, the song proper gives Peytan a chance to showcase his guitar talents for a couple of minutes before vocals kick in. This is probably my favourite song on the album for intensity and compostion, with his guitar work particularly solid, and the vocals matched up well, but of course, this song could be filled out with more instruments.

"Abstract Sounds" closes with it's longest song "Nature's Wrath",  which also gives a good showcase to Peytan's guitar riffs, though here, they almost feel like parts of a few songs stitched together. I like the clear, enunciated vocals, and the song has a lot of good points, but I think it could have been tightened up musically, and some of the extended instrumental sections in particular could have used some editing, or at least added musical elements.

So, what are my final thoughts on Black Cloud's debut album? Overall, this album has a lot of promising components that I'd love to see Peytan Andreola build on, but it is a work in progress, at least at this juncture. Peytan is a good guitarist with death metal vocals to match, but much like earlier Blood Shed Productions solo projects, his music would sound a lot fuller and more complete with extra musicians, particularly a bassist and full-time drummer (even a drum machine more regularly would help.) As these songs stand, they are generally well performed, but the structure and pacing of many of them could use another pass through, and I don't know what happened to "Meet/Greet The Reaper." One thing I noticed is, despite Black Cloud's own advertising of having trance and world elements, I didn't get much of that here beyond the hand drums, and if Peytan implemented them more, he'd immediately stand out locally.

I did like a lot of the album though, especially later songs like "No Bares Holded", and if Peytan can iron out some of the kinks and give these songs some extra production and time, he'd have even more to showcase here. There's work to do, but Black Cloud are on the right track, and I hope they can build on things on future releases, but see what you think at the above links! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The Ripcordz & Soundcheck), A New Album, And New Videos!!

Before we dive into Rotaryfest fallout, let's tackle some recent and overdue news and notes, including a surprise album release, new videos, and leading off, here's some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for this fall!

With our Sault Ontario concert calendar now listing shows through early November from other bands, let's add three more concert weekends from local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck's own 2019 concert calendar to our listings! As revealed there (with new promotion hopefully following closer to showtime), fans can see Soundcheck back at Reggie's West for Friday & Saturday nighters on September 13th & 14th, and then on October 18th & 19th, shows which sandwich a return weekend at The Esquire Club on October 4th & 5th. Of course, there will likely be more shows coming from Soundcheck that aren't on the Reggievelt/Esquire-heavy concert calendar above, not to mention shows beyond October, so stay tuned for word on those if they come out. You can enjoy Travis, Terry, Paul, and Glen's hard rocking classic hits on all six nights at 10:00 PM-ish start times with 19+ age limits and no cover charges. Next up, Montreal hardcore punk legends The Ripcordz will return to Sault Ste. Marie for one night only on Saturday, November 9th when they headline at The Rockstar Bar! Yes, this is advertised as being upstairs at The Rockstar Bar, not The Algonquin Pub, where they've played thrice before. After playing a local venue annually in the latter half of the year from 2013-2017, Paul Gott and company did not play a Soo date at all last year, so the anticipation is high for hardcore punk fans to take in The Ripcordz' extensive setlist, albeit later into the year than ever before, I think! Local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades will open this concert, marking their sixth straight time opening for their "Fed Up!" split-mates locally, with at least one additional opening band to be announced (for reference, the other opening act in 2017 was Stegadeth.) Once again promoted by Jack Spades frontman J.D. Pearce, this 19+ concert will have $10 advance tickets (availability details forthcoming), but unlike in 2017, the price jumps to $15 at the door.

Not seeing a Ripcordz show locally last year was very unusual, but better now than never for their seventh and final Sault Ste. Marie concert of the 2010s, and I know there will be a great turnout this fall! Visit the official Facebook event page for continuing details on this concert as they roll in!

Also, here's some long overdue updates from new local death/trance metal solo project Black Cloud, who quietly (and surprisingly) released their debut album onto their new Bandcamp page on June 27th! Entitled "Abstract Sounds", the Peytan Andreola-led act recorded nine songs for the album, which is available for $7 (or more) at the above links, eschewing the recent trend of "name your price" payment models for local bands on there, though you can stream the whole thing there for free too. While lo-fi in this state, the songs all have substantive length and don't have overtly provocative lyrics, so keep "Abstract Sounds" in mind if those aspects interest you! As a new paid album release, this is absolutely eligible for an SMS review, perhaps in the coming week, so stay tuned! Now, elsewhere from the Black Cloud camp, Peytan had posted a handful of new videos onto their Facebook page a couple of months back, so what is there to see from these?

Most recently, Peytan shared a video of him covering Devildriver's "Swinging the Dead", though it's hard to discern his performance over the original song. You get a better sense of his skill on this solid acoustic jam clip, plus two live streamed videos from May 28th (a 4 minute clip linked here, and the 43 minute long video embedded below.) Your best bet for audio clarity is the first 10 minutes, as Peytan's guitar was turned way down for most of it. He has growling ability and guitar skill, but he could stand to fill out the songs and improve on the structure and pacing. Is this present on "Abstract Sounds"? Finally for today, here's some new footage of local/Thompson, Manitoba alt-hard rock solo musician Mike Haggith, courtesy of his Facebook page earlier this month! Over the Canada Day weekend, Mike played at a private event with Thompson-area musicians, and he posted two videos from that set onto Facebook afterward, featuring him on vocals & rhythm guitar alongside guitarist John Ham, drummer Kory Wickdahl, and Mike's Between the Ditches bandmate Justin Fuciarelli on bass. For what it's worth, there are personal Facebook videos floating around of Mike and many of the same musicians from a more recent outdoor jam concert, but at press time, those haven't been publically shared that I know of. In terms of the Canada Day private gig, Mike and friends can be seen covering Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" (a fine pick for the then-impending Fourth of July), and as embedded below, Mike's own solo original "The Nature of the Times."

These performances sound good, and the extra rock base from the full band (temporary as it may be) does help the song, in this listener's view! I'm not a huge fan of "Free Bird", but that cover's handled well also. The videos' biggest issue is the tight camera angle which only captures Mike and Justin with any regularity, though Kory's head does come into view when Mike moves to his left. Solid renditions, so give them a look above & below!

Seether, Sugar Island Music Festival, And Project 906 Concert Previews!!

As promised, here's the second half of this weekend's concert previews, all concerning Sault Michigan-area events today and tomorrow! Nothing short notice to touch on that I know of, so here's what you should know!

We'll start today's concert preview post in Sault Ste. Marie, where local hard rock/blues quartet Project 906 will return to The Superior Cafe for a headlining concert TONIGHT! This will be more familiar territory for this fan favourite quartet, who have not played the Superior Cafe/Bird's Eye Outfitters complex since the spring. Venue advertising notes that Traverse City's Right Brain Brewery will be holding a "tap takeover" at the venue tonight, so if you're up for some regional beer, keep that angle in mind also! Project 906's set proper is at 8:00 PM, I'd assume this is 21+ given the above theme, and there is no announced cover charge. (Note that the band will also be playing a special set at a Tahquamenon Motorcycle Club motorcross event in Newberry on September 8th, but that's outside of our coverage range.)



Next up, let's head east to Sugar Island for the 18th annual Sugar Island Music Festival, where Kinross classic/hard rock trio Banned will return as night #1 and #2 headliners TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! These sets will keep the Traynors-led band's 8 year streak of Sugar Island Fest appearances going strong, and with prime night-closing timeslots to boot, so make sure to stay late to see Banned in action! Of course, the festival will see local crafts, food and drinks, a dance floor, kids entertainment, a bean bag toss tournament, and more fun & merriment all weekend long, so visit the official website for full non-musical details! Traditionally a folk, country, and acoustic-centric festival full of online page-less acts, you can get full scheduling details above as well, but tonight's bill will see Banned preceded by The Schutz Boys, Hillsdale jam band All Arms, 2 Cents, Jack Grim & Clownsack alum Fran Blackwood, Davey MacLeod, and Dave Morrison "and friends".

Dave Morrison aside, all of Friday's bands are returning on Saturday, alongside 3½ Men, Joel Choate, Gentleman George Snider and friends, Chicago folk duo February Sky (with special guests Moose River), Flex, and an open mic block, but the big surprise here is Birch Run, Michigan progressive death metal band Abstract Aura, who will make their apparent local concert debut tomorrow at 8:00 PM! Abstract Aura may seem like an out of left field inclusion this year, but guitarist Travis McInerney appears to have connections in the E.U.P., given that he played the open mic block in 2012 (source here.) They're a brutal technical outfit from what I've heard, and while it'd be interesting to hear how Abstract Aura do in Sugar Island, take this with a slight grain of salt, as they announced a break last week due to their recent drummer vacancy. Sunday's hard rock-free lineup runs from 11:00 AM-5:00 PM, and largely features returning acts from prior days.

Banned are on at 9:30 PM tonight and tomorrow, with the music beginning at 5:00 PM & 11:00 AM respectively.  As usual, admission is via purchase of a $10 souvenir button that will get you in all 3 days, but kids under 12 (with an adult) remain FREE. Camping rates are $15 for the weekend, and there are no 1-2 day festival passes. Buttons are available at Ed's Bayview Store, The Hilltop Bar & Grill, or the Westshore Convenience Store in Sugar Island, and at Crooked Music in Sault Ste. Marie, or presumably at the door. This sounds like another great and varied Sugar Island Festival, so see the above links for more details, and here's Banned live!

Finally for today, here's the main event of the weekend, as South African hard rock trio Seether will return to our area TOMORROW NIGHT when they headline at The Dreammaker's Theater at Kewadin Casino in Sault Ste. Marie! Fans will recall seeing this platinum selling mainstay on Rock 101 and the Billboard rock charts when they opened for Three Days Grace in Sault Ontario 10 years ago. Since then, Seether have gotten even bigger with hit songs like "Tonight", "Words as Weapons", and "Let You Down", so their grunge influenced hard rock onslaught should be more than welcomed by the sizable crowd tomorrow! Knoxville, Tennessee hard rock quartet 10 Years will also return to our area tomorrow night, 8 years after they opened for Sevendust at the same venue. This band recently had their biggest rock radio hit since "Wasteland" 12 years ago with "Novocaine", and their modern and hard hitting sound will be a nice compliment! Nashville hard rock quartet The Dead Deads (replacing LTNT) will open in their local concert debut tomorrow as well.

This 3/4ths female group have an energetic and creative sound with punk and sci-fi influences, and they should deliver a solid set to kick things off! General floor seating is still available via $46 tickets, which you can buy at this link, at 1-800-KEWADIN, or at the in-person box office. This is an ALL AGES event (brought to you by Allstar Promotions), with an advertised 7:00 PM start time. Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Tantrym Tyme

Now is a good time to post this month's Defunct Local Band Profile, our monthly spotlight of a local metal, hard rock, or punk band (or two) that is not an active project at present, but deserves a look back for current readers! This month's randomly selected band comes from across the river in Sault Michigan, and was one of the most prominent young hard rock bands there in the early-mid 2010s, so here's what you should know on them!

Audio/Video: Videos from Tantrym Tyme's run (under any name) aren't as plentiful as they used to be, partially due to the deletion of all videos from Jacob's YouTube channel, but there are still a fair amount of clips to check out! Their Facebook page has 5 sporadically posted clips from shows between 2012 and 2016,  and a few YouTube uploads exist from a couple of different sources, like like two early official channels under older names (here and here), and a pair of more recent videos from Christopher Paci's channel, with covers of everyone from Pantera to A Perfect Circle to Rise Against. Songwriting sessions and an album were also teased in 2015, but original Tantrym Tyme content hasn't surfaced online. Here's Tantrym Tyme covering Alter Bridge at The Savoy Bar in 2015!



Info/Analysis: Publically launching in 2010 via the former Guitar Studio summer rock camp, this group immediately gained recognition by their ages alone, each being around 10 or 11 years old at the time! Soon changing their name from Aux to Abstract, they made waves with a set at that year's Kewadin Casino 25th Anniversary Summer Festival, and would become regular performers at community events, festivals, battles of the bands, talent shows, school functions, and sporting events around the E.U.P., and even at some nightclubs, plus a long association with Harmony Health Foods. After a brief name change to Tantrum in early 2012, they settled on Tantrym Tyme later that same year, coinciding with their first guitarist replacement. Online coverage of their shows was often on little or no notice, but concerts continued through at least August 2016's Downtown Days festivities in Sault Michigan. Tantrym Tyme quietly dissolved by 2017, with frontman Jacob Hotlen moving out of state that same year.

Arguably surviving longer together than any of the young hard rock bands that came out of the Guitar Studio, Tantrym Tyme improved with age from promise-laded kids to well rounded teenagers, and their musical evolution as they got older and more experienced is worth exploring! Jacob's vocal range and tone was a good sign of that, and he always had solid chemistry with Mike, Ethan, and their rotating second guitarist. I wish they'd promoted their shows with more advance notice online, but Tantrym Tyme were a young highlight in the E.U.P. in the early-mid 2010s, and hopefully everyone stays active in music in some form or another!
